This article is derived from a conference at the ABRALIN ao vivo, held online, in 2020. The goal is to discuss the benefits and challenges associated with archiving in language documentation considering our accumulated knowledge as scholars who are deeply involved in administering, contributing to, and drawing on language archives, with an emphasis on the indigenous languages of Latin America. We focus in particular on the relevance of language archiving in Brazil, and its significance for scholars, community members, and other stakeholders.

Este artigo é oriundo de uma conferência na ABRALIN ao vivo, realizada online, em 2020. O objetivo é discutir os benefícios e desafios associados à documentação e criação de acervos linguísticos considerando nosso conhecimento acumulado como pesquisadores profundamente envolvidos na administração e manutenção de acervos de línguas, com ênfase nas línguas indígenas da América Latina. Focamos na relevância de acervos linguísticos no Brasil e sua importância para a comunidade acadêmica, membros de comunidades indígenas e outras partes interessadas.

Resumo Como uma contribuição ao estudo das estruturas complexas nas línguas nativas da Amazônia, este artigo examina a sintaxe de construções aditivas e de conjunção na língua dos Gavião de Rondônia. Nessa língua, a partícula k ĩ ´í ‘também, e’ é usada para formar construções aditivas (‘também’) com sintagmas nominais ou sintagmas verbais, sem criar constituintes sintáticos coordenados. A mesma partícula usa-se para formar construções com constituintes coordenados. As funções diferentes da partícula têm estruturas sintáticas diferentes e um pouco complexas. Uma breve descrição da sintaxe básica gavião é fornecida, para se ter uma base para entender a estrutura de aditivos e conjunções. Exemplos são providenciados para descrever os padrões observados e para fornecer testes para determinar a estrutura constituinte das construções coordenadas. Regras de composição das construções são oferecidas quando há evidência suficiente. A diferença semântica entre gerúndios e conjunções é notada. Propriedades tipológicas da conjunção gavião são discutidas. A conjunção é do tipo bissindético pospositivo. Disjunção, ‘ou... ou’, que também ocorre na língua, é descrita brevemente.

Abstract As a contribution to the study of complex structures in native Amazonian languages, this article examines the syntax of additives and conjunctions in the language of the Gavião of Rondônia. In this language the particle k ĩ ´í ‘also, too, and’ is used to form additive (‘also’) constructions with noun phrases and verb phrases, without creating conjoined syntactic constituents. The same particle is also used to form constructions with conjoined constituents, in which two or more verb phrases or two or more noun phrases are conjoined. The different functions of the particle have different and somewhat complicated syntactic structures. A brief description of basic Gavião syntax is provided, to have a basis for understanding the structure of the additives and conjunctions. Examples are given to describe the patterns observed and to provide tests to determine the constituent structure of the conjoined constructions. Composition rules for conjoined and additive constructions are offered when there is sufficient evidence. The semantic difference between participles and conjunctions is noted. Typological properties of Gavião additives and conjunction are discussed. Conjunction is of the postpositive bisyndetic type. Disjunction, ‘or’, which also appears in the language, is briefly described.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta alguns resultados preliminares de estudos acerca da terminologia de parentesco usada pelos grupos indígenas da família linguística Mondé, do tronco Tupi. A investigação é mais detalhada no caso dos Gavião de Rondônia, cuja terminologia de parentesco é descrita e considerada em relação à nominação e ao casamento. São apresentados alguns dados da terminologia de parentesco para os povos Paiter (Suruí de Rondônia), Cinta Larga, Salamãy e Aruá. A terminologia das relações de parentesco básicas dos povos Gavião, Cinta Larga e Paiter é apresentada a fim de se investigar a variação dentro da família. A análise linguística dos termos revela aspectos do pensamento indígena sobre parentesco. Os métodos da linguística diacrônica são utilizados para fornecer evidências sobre a terminologia de parentesco do grupo ancestral, Proto-Mondé, e sobre a evolução dos sistemas terminológicos atuais.

Abstract This article presents some preliminary results from studies on the kinship terminology used by indigenous groups of the Mondé branch of the Tupi language family. This investigation pays particular attention to the Gavião people of Rondônia, whose kinship terminology is described and considered in relation to naming and marriage pratices. Some kinship terminology data is also included for the Paiter (Suruí of Rondônia), Cinta Larga, Salamãy, and Aruá groups, and terminology for basic kinship relations in the Gavião, Cinta Larga, and Paiter are also presented to investigate variation within the family. Linguistic analysis of these terms reveals aspects of the indigenous view of kinship. Diachronic linguistic methods are utilized to generate findings on kinship terminology in the ancestral group, Proto-Mondé, and on the evolution of contemporary terminological systems.

Resumo: Neste trabalho, apresentamos os primeiros resultados da aplicação de métodos comparativos computacionais, inspirados nas ideias de McMahon & McMahon (2005), a um conjunto de dados de línguas de todos os ramos da família Tupí (incluindo-se todas as línguas não-Tupí-Guaraní ainda vivas), com o intuito de produzir uma classificação da família com base em distância lexical. Usamos uma lista de Swadesh (composta por termos historicamente mais estáveis) e uma lista de nomes de plantas e animais para comparação de resultados. Além disso, também selecionamos os termos mais (HiHi) e menos (LoLo) estáveis da lista de Swadesh para formar sublistas para tratamento independente. Comparamos as redes NeighborNet e os cladogramas neighbor-joining resultantes, derivando conclusões sobre o seu impacto na compreensão atual da classificação das línguas Tupí. Um importante resultado é a falta de apoio para a ideia, atualmente em discussão, da existência de uma divisão leste-oeste dentro da família.

Abstract: In this paper we present the first results of the application of computational methods, inspired by the ideas in McMahon & McMahon (2005), to a dataset collected from languages of every branch of the Tupian family (including all living non-Tupí-Guaraní languages) in order to produce a classification of the family based on lexical distance. We used both a Swadesh list (with historically stabler terms) and a list of animal and plant names for results comparison. In addition, we also selected more (HiHi) and less (LoLo) stable terms from the Swadesh list to form sublists for indepedent treatment. We compared the resulting NeighborNet networks and neighbor-joining cladograms and drew conclusions about their significance for the current understanding of the classification of Tupian languages. One important result is the lack of support for the currently discussed idea of an Eastern-Western division within Tupí.

Em uma língua com tom e prolongamento distintivos, como Gavião de Rondônia, a primeira questão sobre a fala tocada com instrumentos musicais é a relação entre as melodias e a fonologia suprassegmental das palavras correspondentes na fala cantada e na fala normal. A forma cantada serve para aprender e explicar os toques musicais. Ela é influenciada pelos recursos fonológicos da forma falada e pelos recursos musicais da forma instrumental, sendo intermediária entre as duas. Esta arte é executada com vários instrumentos musicais tradicionais na cultura Gavião de Rondônia. O papel da fala cantada instrumental é artístico, para acompanhar festas, e também prático, para ajudar a manter o patrimônio oral de uma cultura não escrita. Esta prática representa um patrimônio sociocultural do substrato tradicional das culturas da Amazônia, pouco estudado e ameaçado de extinção. Na Terra Indígena Igarapé Lourdes, usamos uma metodologia original para documentar este fenômeno nos instrumentos musicais identificados como 'falantes' ou 'cantantes' pelos colaboradores Gavião. As sessões de gravação e de transcrição necessárias para esse tipo de trabalho foram explicadas aqui. Elas revelaram a relação de iconicidade acústica que existe entre as palavras e a música. A análise linguística permite entender a natureza fonética e fonológica da iconicidade.

In a language with distinctive tone and length, such as Gavião of Rondônia, the first question about speech played by musical instruments is the relation between the melodies and the super-segmental phonology of the corresponding words in sung speech and in normal speech. The sung speech is useful for learning and explaining the musical notes. It is influenced by the phonological possibilities of the spoken form and by the musical possibilities of the instrumental form, being intermediate between the two. This art is performed with various Gavião traditional musical instruments. The role of the instrumental sung speech is artistic and also practical, to help to maintain the oral heritage. This practice represents a little-studied and threatened cultural heritage of the traditional substratum of the cultures of Amazonia. On the Indigenous Reserve Igarapé Lourdes we used an original methodology to document this phenomenon in the musical instruments which the Gavião collaborators identified as 'speaking' or 'singing'. The recording and transcription sessions necessary for this type of research will be explained here. They show the relation of acoustic iconicity which exists between the words and the music. Linguistic analysis makes it possible to understand the phonetic and phonological nature of the iconicity.

A língua dos Gavião de Rondônia constrói cláusulas relativas por meio de nominalização sintática, usando uma de duas partículas, mát 'nominalização concreta' ou méne 'nominalização abstrata', que são derivadas diacronicamente de pronomes de discurso. As cláusulas nominais assim construídas podem ou não ter um núcleo interno, que, se ocorre, não é marcado como tal, criando uma certa ambigüidade. A cláusula nominalizada pode modificar um radical nominal seguinte, que funciona como núcleo externo. Cláusulas relativas e cláusulas complementos não são construções distintas nesta língua. A significação tipológica destas construções é discutida.

The language of the Gavião of Rondônia constructs relative clauses by syntactic nominalization, using either of two particles, mát 'concrete nominalization' or méne 'abstract nominalization', which are derived diachronically from discourse pronouns. The resulting nominal clause may or may not have an internal head, which, if it occurs, is not marked, leading to a certain degree of ambiguity. The nominalized clause can modify a following noun stem, which serves as an external head. Relative clauses and complement clauses are not distinct constructions in this language. The typological significance of these constructions is discussed.
