INTRODUÇÃO: O presente estudo compara a captura através da isca humana dos principais vetores da malária, com dois métodos alternativos de captura, a armadilha luminosa de Shannon e a armadilha Mosquito magnet. MÉTODOS: O presente estudo utiliza modelos de regressão para ajustar os dados obtidos para uma distribuição binomial negativa. RESULTADOS: Os números e as proporções relativas obtidas nos três métodos variaram fortemente entre as espécies. A maior densidade capturada foi de Anopheles triannulatus, através das armadilhas de Shannon e do Mosquito magnet sendo mais de 330% superior que a obtida pela captura por isca humana. Para Anopheles darlingi, capturas com a armadilha de Shannon e com o Mosquito magnet representaram cerca de 14% e 26%, respectivamente, em comparação com a captura através da isca humana. Outras espécies com potencial de transmissão da malária não foram capturadas com a utilização da isca humana, mas foram coletadas na armadilha de Shannon e no Mosquito magnet (Anopheles oswaldoi). Ambas as técnicas alternativas de captura, podem predizer significativamente a captura através da isca humana de Anopheles triannulatus, porém sem proporcionalidade. Os números previstos para o Anopheles darlingi, após a contagem total da captura diária, são significativos e proporcionais, mas a previsão é mais confiável para a armadilha de Shannon que para o Mosquito magnet. CONCLUSÕES: A comparação de métodos alternativos de captura pode ser parcialmente recomendada para a substituição da captura através da isca humana ou, pelo menos, como uma forma complementar de coleta de mosquitos.

INTRODUCTION: The present study compares human landing catches of primary malaria vectors with two alternative methods of capture: the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet. METHODS: This study used regression models to adjust capture data to a negative binominal distribution. RESULTS: Capture numbers and relative percentages obtained from the three methods vary strongly between species. The highest overall captures were obtained for Anopheles triannulatus with captures for the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet measuring more than 330% higher than captures obtained by human landings. For Anopheles darlingi, captures by the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet were about 14% and 26% of human landing catches, respectively. Another species with malaria transmission potential that was not sampled by human landing captures weascaptured by the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet (Anopheles oswaldoi). Both alternative sampling techniques can predict the human landing of Anopheles triannulatus, but without proportionality. Models for Anopheles darlingi counts, after totaling daily captures, are significant and proportional, but prediction models are more reliable when using the Shannon trap compared with the Mosquito magnet captures. CONCLUSIONS: These alternative capture methods can be partially recommended for the substitution of human landing captures or, at least, as complementary forms of monitoring for malarial mosquitoes.

A leishmaniose visceral é uma doença infecciosa sistêmica, de evolução crônica grave, potencialmente fatal para o homem. Os fatores de risco para a infecção em áreas urbanas têm sido associados às precárias condições de moradia, à presença de flebotomíneos vetores e de animais domésticos infectados. O presente trabalho objetivou descrever a fauna flebotomínica e infecção canina nos bairros de ocorrência da leishmaniose visceral humana no município de Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, notificados no período de janeiro de 2005 a dezembro de 2006. Foram coletados 1.909 flebotomíneos, as espécies mais frequentes foram Lutzomyia cruzi (81,25%), Lutzomyia whitmani (13,88%) e Lutzomyia longipalpis (2,62%). A densidade de flebotomíneos não apresentou correlação significativa com a variação dos fatores ambientais. A prevalência de leishmaniose visceral canina nos bairros foi de 26,82% e observou-se que as regiões com grande densidade de vetores coincidem com áreas de alta prevalência em cães e áreas nas quais foi detectado o maior número de casos humanos. O estudo de vetores e outros possíveis hospedeiros são imprescindíveis para um bom entendimento da doença a fim de gerar benefícios para a saúde pública, visando à prevenção e o controle das leishmanioses no município de Cuiabá e no Estado de Mato Grosso.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a systemic infectious disease that can cause to a severe, potentially life-threatening chronic condition in humans. Risk factors for infection in urban areas have been associated with poor living conditions, the presence of sand fly vectors and infected pets. This study aimed to describe sand fly and canine infection in the neighborhoods of human visceral leishmaniasis occurrence in the city of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, central-western Brazil, reported between January 2005 and December 2006. A total of 1,909 sand flies were collected. They were predominantly males and the most frequent species were Lutzomyia cruzi (81.25%), Lutzomyia whitmani (13.88%) and Lutzomyia longipalpis (2.62%). The sand fly density was not significantly correlated with the variation of environmental factors. The prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis in the neighborhoods studied was 26.82% and it was found that areas with high density of vectors coincided with areas of high prevalence of dogs and those with the highest rates of human cases. The study of vectors and other potential hosts are essential for a good understanding of visceral leishmaniasis and the related public health concerns, aiming at the prevention and control of leishmaniasis in the city of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State.

INTRODUÇÃO: O município de Jaciara foi classificado em 2003, como área de transmissão de leishmaniose visceral em situação de surto. O trabalho objetivou determinar evidência de transmissão de Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi por Lutzomyia cruzi no município de Jaciara, Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. MÉTODOS: O município situa-se a 127km da capital Cuiabá e é um importante ponto de atração para os praticantes de eco-turismo. Fêmeas de Lutzomyia cruzi, capturadas com armadilha de CDC, foram dissecadas para confirmação da espécie e armazenadas a -20ºC em pools de 10 indivíduos para extração de DNA, PCR genérico, RFLP específico e eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida. RESULTADOS: O levantamento entomológico demonstrou a ocorrência abundante de Lutzomyia cruzi e ausência de Lutzomyia longipalpis, principal vetora da Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi. Uma das três amostras analisadas apresentou banda característica de DNA de Leishmania (120pb) em PCR genérico. Para confirmação da espécie de Leishmania, na RFLP utilizaram-se controles positivos de Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis e Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi digeridas com enzima de restrição HaeIII. Constatou-se um padrão de bandas semelhante à Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi em uma amostra, confirmando a detecção de infecção natural de Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi em Lutzomyia cruzi. CONCLUSÕES: A ocorrência de casos humanos e cães positivos, a presença da Lutzomyia cruzi e a ausência de Lutzomyia longipalpis, bem como a detecção de infecção natural por Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, evidenciam a participação de Lutzomyia cruzi na transmissão da leishmaniose visceral em Jaciara, Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil.

INTRODUCTION: The municipality of Jaciara was classified in 2003 as a transmission area for visceral leishmaniasis in outbreak situations. This study aimed to establish evidence of transmission of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi by Lutzomyia cruzi in the municipality of Jaciara, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. METHODS: This municipality is located 127 km from the state capital (Cuiabá) and is an important center for ecotourism practitioners. Females of Lutzomyia cruzi, captured using CDC traps, were dissected to confirm the species and stored at -20ºC in pools of 10 individuals for DNA extraction, generic PCR, specific RFLP and electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel. RESULTS: The entomological survey showed abundant occurrence of Lutzomyia cruzi and absence of Lutzomyia longipalpis (the main vector for Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi). One of the three samples showed a characteristic DNA band from Leishmania (120 bp) in generic PCR. To confirm the Leishmania species via RFLP, positive controls for Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi digested with restriction enzyme HaeIII were used. A pattern of bands similar to Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi was found in one sample, thus confirming the detection of natural infection with Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi in Lutzomyia cruzi. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrences of positive cases in humans and dogs, the presence of Lutzomyia cruzi and the absence of Lutzomyia longipalpis together with the detection of natural infection with Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, indicate that Lutzomyia cruzi participates in visceral leishmaniasis transmission in Jaciara, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

O estudo foi realizado em 25 aldeias indígenas pertencentes a 13 municípios do Estado de Mato Grosso. Foram identificados 4.424 exemplares de 37 espécies do gênero Lutzomyia e uma espécie do gênero Brumptomyia. Vetores da leishmaniose tegumentar americana e da leishmaniose visceral foram abundantemente capturados e representaram 28,7% (Lutzomyia whitmani) e 23,6% (Lutzomyia longipalpis), respectivamente.

This study was conducted in 25 indigenous villages in 13 municipalities of the State of Mato Grosso. 4,424 specimens of 37 species of the genus Lutzomyia and one species of the genus Brumptomyia were identified. Vectors for American tegumentary leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis were abundantly captured, and these represented 28.7% (Lutzomyia whitmani) and 23.6% (Lutzomyia longipalpis), respectively.

O presente trabalho objetivou descrever a epidemiologia e a expansão da leishmaniose visceral no município de Várzea Grande/Mato Grosso/Brasil de 1998 a 2007. Foram notificados 48 casos humanos, com taxa de incidência de até 11,7 por 100.000 habitantes, preferencialmente em crianças e adolescentes de ambos os sexos, com acentuada expansão geográfica da doença no município.

This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and spread of visceral leishmaniasis in the municipality of Várzea Grande, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, between 1998 and 2007. Forty-eight human cases were reported, with an incidence rate of up to 11.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, particularly among children and adolescents of both sexes, with marked geographical spread of the disease in the municipality.

Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani s.l.is the main vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in state of Mato Grosso, but little is known about environmental determinants of its spatial distribution on a regional scale. Entomologic surveys of this sand fly species, conducted between 1996 and 2001 in 41 state municipalities, were used to investigate the relationships between environmental factors and the presence of the species, and to develop a spatial model of habitat suitability. The relationship between averaged CDC light trap indexes and 15 environmental and socio-economic factors were tested by logistic regression (LR) analysis. Spatial layers of deforestation tax and the Brazilian index of gross net production (IGNP) were identified as significant explanatory variables for vector presence in the LR model, and these were then overlaid with habitat maps. The highest habitat suitability in 2001 was obtained for the heavily deforested areas in the Central-North, South, East, and Southwest of Mato Grosso, particularly in municipalities with lower IGNP values.

O estudo dos hábitos alimentares e do conteúdo intestinal dos flebotomíneos permite a identificação dos hospedeiros, indicando os potenciais reservatórios das leishmanias. Este trabalho objetivou determinar a preferência alimentar de Lutzomyia longipalpis e sua relação com a transmissão da leishmaniose visceral. As capturas mensais foram realizadas em área de transmissão de leishmaniose visceral, município de Várzea Grande, Estado de Mato Grosso, no período de janeiro de 2004 a junho de 2006, utilizando-se armadilhas de luz CDC. Foram capturadas 2.376 fêmeas de Lutzomyia longipalpis, das quais 104 (4,4%) estavam ingurgitadas, sendo 32 (30,8%) capturadas no intradomicílio e 72 (69,2%) no peridomicílio. Após reação de precipitina, observou-se que as fêmeas de Lutzomyia longipalpis alimentaram-se preferencialmente em aves (30,8%) e roedores (21,2%), mas também foram encontradas fêmeas alimentadas de sangue de humanos, gambás, bois, cavalos e cães, demonstrando o caráter oportunista da espécie.

Studies on the feeding habits and intestinal content of sandflies make it possible to identify hosts, thereby indicating potential reservoirs for Leishmania. The present study had the aim of determining the feeding preferences of Lutzomyia longipalpis and its relationship with the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis. Specimens were caught every month in a transmission area of visceral leishmaniasis, in the municipality of Várzea Grande, State of Mato Grosso, from January 2004 to June 2006, using CDC light traps. 2,376 females of Lutzomyia longipalpis were caught, of which 104 (4.4%) were engorged. Among these, 32 (30.8%) were caught inside homes and 72 (69.2%) in areas surrounding homes. From the precipitin reaction, it was observed that Lutzomyia longipalpis females fed preferentially on birds (30.8%) and rodents (21.2%), but they were also found to have fed on blood from humans, opossums, oxen, horses and dogs, thus demonstrating the opportunist nature of this species.

No Estado de Mato Grosso, 100% dos municípios apresentam registros de casos autóctones de leishmaniose tegumentar americana. O presente trabalho objetivou verificar a distribuição geográfica de Lutzomyia whitmani no estado. Mato Grosso possui três ecossistemas distintos, o cerrado, o pantanal e área de domínio amazônico. Os dados sobre a ocorrência de Lutzomyia whitmani foram obtidos a partir de relatórios de pesquisa entomológica realizados pelo Núcleo de Entomologia da Fundação Nacional de Saúde no período de 1996 a 2000 e de 2001 a 2006 pelo Laboratório de Entomologia da Secretaria Estadual de Saúde de Mato Grosso. Foram realizadas pesquisas entomológicas em 83 (59,7%) dos 139 municípios de Mato Grosso. Lutzomyia whitmani foi capturado em 70 (84,3%) municípios, com ampla distribuição em todos os tipos de vegetação.

In the State of Mato Grosso, 100% of the municipalities have records of autochthonous cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. The present study had the aim of investigating the geographical distribution of the Lutzomyia whitmani in the state. Mato Grosso has three distinct ecosystems: the savannah, the marshland and the area of the Amazon domain. Data on occurrences of Lutzomyia whitmani were obtained from reports on entomological surveys carried out by the Entomology Group of the National Health Foundation between 1996 and 2000 and by the Entomology Laboratory of the Mato Grosso State Health Department between 2001 and 2006. Entomological surveys were performed in 83 (59.7%) of the 139 municipalities of Mato Grosso. Lutzomyia whitmani was caught in 70 (84.3%) municipalities, with widespread distribution in all types of vegetation.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been naturally transmitted in periurban areas due to the emergence and reemergence of its vectors in such areas. Aimed to further knowledge on ecological aspects affecting the occurrence of phlebotomine sand flies in VL transmission areas in the municipality of Várzea Grande, state of Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil, sand fly captures were carried out. Monthly collections of sand flies were undertaken with CDC light-traps, which were left in both intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary areas of ten residences during four consecutive days between January 2004 and June 2006. Twenty-two species of genus Lutzomyia and one of Brumptomyia were captured. The most abundant species was Lutzomyia longipalpis (65.23%), followed by L. evandroi (16.26%), L. lenti (7.69%), L. whitmani (4.92%), L. sallesi (2.34%) and L. termitophila (1.32%). The highest density of the main VL vector, L. longipalpis, was found in peridomiciliary areas, mostly males. No significant correlation was found between environment (temperature, air relative humidity and rain fall) and phlebotomine density; although a slight increase in sand fly density has been observed in the period following rainfalls, particularly L. longipalpis. No correlation was observed between distribution and density of L. longipalpis, prevalence of human VL cases and the presence of serologically positive dogs. The presence of infected dogs, increased vector density, susceptibility rate and interruption of epidemiological surveillance may raise the risk of VL transmission to man in Várzea Grande.

O estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil vem sendo grandemente impactado, o que provoca uma alteração no habitat natural da fauna, incluindo-se os vetores das leishmanioses. Foram analisados dados de levantamentos entomológicos realizados pela FUNASA e SES no período de 1996 a 2001. Foram capturados indivíduos pertencentes a 88 espécies, sendo as de importância para a transmissão das leishmanioses: Lutzomyia amazonensis, L. anduzei, L. ayrozai, L. carrerai carrerai, L. complexa, L. cruzi, L. flaviscutellata, L. intermedia, L. longipalpis, L. migonei, L. paraensis, L. ubiquitalis, L. whitmani e L. yuilli yuilli, as quais foram plotadas no mapa do Estado. A maioria das espécies de importância médica compartilha a vegetação de floresta Amazônica e cerrado. L. longipalpis e L. cruzi possuem altas densidades na região de cerrado. L. flaviscutellata predomina na floresta Amazônica e no cerrado. L. whitmani e L. antunesi foram capturadas na floresta Amazônica, cerrado e pantanal.

Intense environmental impacts, causing alterations of the natural habitats of fauna, including those of sandfly disease vectors are observed in Mato Grosso State, Central Brazil. Entomologic survey of phlebotomines was based on light trap and was carried out by entomological nucleus of the FUNASA and SES in the period between 1996 and 2001. Eighty eight species were identified, including the following sandflies with medical importance to leishmaniasis: Lutzomyia amazonensis, L. anduzei, L. antunesi, L. ayrozai, L. carrerai carrerai, L. complexa, L. cruzi, L. flaviscutellata, L. intermedia, L. longipalpis, L. migonei, L. paraensis, L. ubiquitalis, L. whitmani and L. yuilli yuilli. Most sandflies of medical importance occurred in the Amazon forest and savannah. L. longipalpis and L. cruzi had high densities in the savannah region. L. flaviscutellata is predominating in both the Amazon forest and the savannah region. L. whitmani and L. antunesi were sampled in the Amazon forest, savannah and marsh land.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo listar as espécies de flebotomíneos que ocorrem no Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Os dados foram obtidos junto à Fundação Nacional de Saúde e à Secretaria Estadual de Saúde, referente às pesquisas entomológicas desenvolvidas entre 1996 e 2004, complementadas com informações de pesquisas desenvolvidas no Estado e bibliografia especializada. Foram registradas 106 espécies de flebotomíneos pertencentes ao gênero Lutzomyia. Esta é uma rica e diversificada fauna, com algumas espécies restritas a áreas florestais e outras registradas em todo o Estado, independente da formação vegetal e em áreas modificadas pela ação antrópica, com predominância de Lutzomyia whitmani.

This work had the objective of listing the sand fly species that occur in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data relating to entomological surveys conducted between 1996 and 2004 were obtained from the National Health Foundation and the State Health Department, and this was supplemented with information from research carried out in the state and from the specialized literature. There were records of 106 sand fly species belonging to the genus Lutzomyia. This is a rich and diversified fauna, with some species restricted to forested areas and others recorded throughout the state, independent of the vegetation type, and in areas modified by human action, with predominance of Lutzomyia whitmani.

A leishmaniose visceral é considerada atualmente uma doença emergente e reemergente, em zonas rurais e urbanas, tanto em área domiciliar quanto peridomiciliar. Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a distribuição espacial de Lutzomyia longipalpis e Lutzomyia cruzi no Estado de Mato Grosso. Os dados de 1996 a 2004 foram obtidos junto ao Laboratório de Entomologia, cujas capturas foram realizadas com armadilha de luz CDC. Foram pesquisados 68 dos 139 municípios do estado. Lutzomyia longipalpis e Lutzomyia cruzi ocorreram em 23 e 22 municípios, respectivamente. Os resultados demonstraram a grande ocorrência de Lutzomyia longipalpis nas áreas com bioma de floresta, de transição e de cerrado. Lutzomyia cruzi ocorreu principalmente em municípios com área de pantanal e cerrado. A verificação da distribuição da população de vetores no estado e os biomas preferenciais proporcionam indicar áreas vulneráveis e/ou receptivas para a transmissão da doença.

Visceral leishmaniasis is currently considered an emergent and reemergent disease, in agricultural and urban zones, both in domestic and peridomestic areas. The objective of this work was to verify the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia cruzi in Mato Grosso State. Data from 1996 to 2004 was collected by the Entomology Laboratory, whose captures were carried with a CDC light trap. Sixty-eight of the 139 cities in the state have been studied. Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia cruzi occurred in 23 and 22 cities, respectively. The results demonstrate the extensive occurrence of Lutzomyia longipalpis in areas with different vegetation types: savanna, transition and Amazon forest. Lutzomyia cruzi occurred mainly in cities with areas of marshland and savanna. Verification of the distribution of the vector populations in the state and their preferential vegetation type, provides an indication of vulnerable and/or receptive areas for disease transmission.
