ABSTRACT The following pages summarize thoughts brought about by the author’s participation in the 2000 International Conference on the Future of Indigenous Peoples, organized in 2000 by the Center for Bedouin Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beersheba, Israel. Multiple topics intertwine, in brief brushstrokes. The condition of the Bedouins, little known in Brazil, is similar to that of indigenous peoples, in their clash with the State and their exclusion in an unequal society. The author draws attention to her discovery of the power of Bedouin oral poetry, in part also written by the poems’ pr otagonists themselves, or in an Arabic/English version by scholar Clinton Bailey. Between the lines, the conflicting feelings of a Jew, granddaughter of immigrants from Odessa (who were still fugitives from tsarism), brought up believing in the utopia of unconditional defense of all peoples of the world and the condemnation of any holocaust. Writing about this journey is to express, even with decades of delay, admiration for the Bedouins and especially for Ismael Abu-Saad, director of the Center, whose books, articles and defense of the rights of all peoples and the socially excluded are fundamental in this essay.

RESUMO Trata-se de uma reflexão despertada pela participação da autora em uma Conferência Internacional sobre o Futuro dos Povos indígenas, organizada no ano 2000 pelo Centro de Estudos Beduínos da Universidade Ben-Gurion, em Beer Sheva, no Negev, em Israel. Múltiplos temas se entrelaçam, em breves pinceladas. A condição dos beduínos, pouco conhecida no Brasil, apresenta semelhanças com a de povos indígenas, no embate com Estados nacionais e exclusão em uma sociedade desigual. A autora aponta sua descoberta do poder da poesia oral beduína, em parte também escrita por protagonistas orais ou em versão árabe/inglês pelo estudioso Clinton Bailey. Nas entrelinhas, os sentimentos conflitantes de uma judia, neta de imigrantes de Odessa, fugitivos ainda do czarismo, educada com a utopia da defesa incondicional de todos os povos do mundo e da condenação de qualquer holocausto. Escrever sobre essa viagem é expressar, mesmo com décadas de atraso, a admiração pelos Beduínos e em especial por Ismael Abu-Saad, diretor do Centro, por seus livros, artigos e defesa dos direitos dos povos e excluídos, fundamentais para este ensaio.

resumo O líder Pedro Arara Karo, de Rondônia, faz um depoimento sobre a sua expulsão da terra indígena nos anos 1960, junto com a mãe e os irmãos, por seringalistas que os ameaçavam de morte. Os invasores empregavam os índios em regime semiescravo de barracão. Pedro cresceu como trabalhador em seringais sem saber que era índio e voltou adulto ao seu povo, que o escolheu como chefe. Seu irmão mais velho, o pajé Manuel, relata como convive com seres do além e como foi iniciado, quando seu pai morto lhe apareceu em forma de onça. A mãe de Pedro foi cozinheira no Posto Indígena Roosevelt, nas terras Cinta Larga, e ficou um mês desaparecida, abrigada nas aldeias indígenas, quando ocorreu o trágico episódio da morte de dois jovens funcionários da Funai em 1971, Acrísio Lima e Possidônio Cavalcanti. A exposição de Pedro é exemplar sobre a formação do povo brasileiro.

abstract Pedro Arara Karo, a First Nation leader from Rondônia, tells us in his autobiography how, in the early sixties, he was expelled with his mother and brothers from their land by rubber barons who threatened to kill them. The Indians were employed as slave laborers on their own land in the rubber plantations. Karo grew up working for non-Indians and had no knowledge of his own language or origins. Only as an adult did he return to his people, who then chose him as their chief. Shaman Manuel, his older brother, explains how he mingles with divine beings and how he was initiated by their dead father, who appeared to him as a jaguar. Karo's mother was a cook at the Roosevelt Indigenous Post, in the land of the Cinta Larga people, and disappeared for more than a month, when two young Funai employees were killed in 1971. It was later found that the Cinta Larga had protected her in their villages. Karo's statement may be taken as an example of how the Brazilian Nation was born.

A defender of social causes and a poetic paladin crusading against injustice and inequality, Ecléa Bosi’s research into the reading habits of circa 50 women workers led to her book, Cultura Popular e Cultura de Massa: Leituras de Operárias, where she explores their access to books and the imaginary, their lives and how industrial society deprives them of artistic and literary creativity, despite their thirst for knowledge and self expression.

Ecléa Bosi, qui est une guerrière poétique contre l´injustice et l´inégalité, analyse dans son livre Cultura Popular e Cultura de Massa: Leituras de Operárias la relation de cinquante ouvrières avec le monde des livres et de la culture. Elle cherche à connaître leurs conditions de vie, et les forces du marché et du profit qui les empêchent de jouir de l´expression artistique et des connaissances litéraires et philosophiques, malgré la soif qu´elles en ont, révélée à Ecléa dans leurs nombreux entretiens.

o artigo focaliza um mito indígena sobre a cabeça voadora e voraz, registrado pela autora em vários grupos indígenas da Amazônia, como os Tupari, os Macurap, os Jabuti, os Aruá, os Sateré-Mawé. Cada versão do mito tem um enredo diferente, mas o tema intrigante é sempre o mesmo: a mutilação do corpo, a cabeça que se transforma ou cola-se num outro ser. Procura-se mergulhar no significado desse mito, ao qual Claude Lévi-Strauss dedicou boa parte de dois livros magistrais, A origem das maneiras da mesa e A oleira ciumenta, e que foi usado por Mário de Andrade no livro clássico sobre o herói brasileiro, Macunaína, uma das poucas obras de fição brasileira a se inspirar em temas e personagens míticos indígenas. O registro de campo desse mito é uma pequena ponta de um amplo trabalho de documentação da tradição e dos mitos indígenas brasileiros, que a autora vem realizando há alguns anos. A intenção, nesse texto, é compreender a riqueza do imaginário indígena brasileiro, insistir na necessidade de documentar culturas que são nossas contemporâneas e ainda bastante desconhecidas. A fição e a arte brasileiras poderiam ampliar muito o seu universo ao explorar e tentar compreender as raízes brasileiras que nos são dadas por mais de 200 povos indígenas do país. Também para os índios, escrever, contar, divulgar e usar nas próprias escolas os seus mitos é importante para reafirmar a identidade étnica e valorizar sua participação na sociedade brasileira.

The article focuses an indian myth about a flying and voracious head, that was told to the author by several indian tribes from the Amazon, such as the Tupari, the Macurap, the Jabuti, the Aruá, the Sateré-Mawé. Each version has a different plot, but the intriguing theme is always the same: the mutilation of the body, a head that is transformed or attaches itself to another being. The essay delves into the meaning of this myth, to which Claude Lévi-Strauss dedicated a good portion of his two important books, L'origine des manières de table and La potière jalouse, and that was used by Mário de Andrade in his classic book about Brazilian hero, Macunaína, one of the few works of fiction to have been inspired by mythicalindian themes and characters. Reporting this myth is just a small part of a large project of documentation of myths and traditions of Brazilian indians that author has been working on for several years. The aim of this text is to show the rich imagination of Brazilian indians, and to insist on the need to document contemporary cultures that are still widely unknown. Brazilian art and fiction could enlarge their universe by exploring and trying to understant the heritage left to us by over two hundred different indian tribes. It is also important fot the indians to reaffirm their ethnic identity, and enhance the worth their participation in Brazilian society, by writing, telling and spreading these myths, and by using them in their schools.
