Abstract This article discusses the resistance of environmental defenders in the Amazon from a political ecology perspective, namely the thinking of José Cláudio Ribeiro and Maria do Espírito Santo, who were murdered on May 24, 2011. This investigation focuses on ‘audacity’ in the environmental struggle typified by this couple, through active research, participative observation of legal proceedings, documentary research, and interviews in the Praialta Piranheira PAE in Nova Ipixuna, Pará to contribute to a deeper comprehension of grassroots environmentalism and expand the understanding of the struggle undertaken by environmental defenders. We argue that the courage to act in the face of terror, this ‘audacity’ of ‘living together with the forest,’ drives subjectification in the collective fight to defend the forest and life. This struggle, in a dialectical relationship between subjectivity and objectivity as proposed by Paulo Freire, is interlinked with collective movements for liberation from colonialist power, in which the power matrix is expressed in different forms of oppression and dimensions of violence that affect both nature and those who live together with the forest.

Resumo Este artigo discute a resistência de defensores ambientais na Amazônia a partir de uma perspectiva da ecologia política do pensamento de José Cláudio Ribeiro e Maria do Espírito Santo, assassinados em 24 de maio de 2011. Por meio de pesquisa-ação, com observação participante de processos judiciais, pesquisa documental e entrevistas no Projeto de Assentamento Agroextrativista (PAE) Praialta-Piranheira, em Nova Ipixuna, Pará, investiga-se a ‘ousadia’ na luta ambiental conforme foi elaborada pelo casal, de forma a contribuir para uma compreensão mais profunda do ecologismo popular e ampliar a percepção da luta de defensores ambientais. Argumenta-se que a coragem de agir diante do terror, esta ‘ousadia’ de ‘conviver com a floresta’, impulsiona a formação de sujeitos na luta coletiva pela floresta e pela vida. Esta luta, em uma relação dialética entre subjetividade e objetividade, tal como proposta por Paulo Freire, se articula em movimentos coletivos pela libertação frente à colonialidade do poder, cuja matriz se expressa em diferentes formas de opressão e dimensões da violência que atingem tanto a natureza quanto aqueles que convivem com a floresta.

Resumo Este artigo traz a transcrição e revisão da roda de conversa realizada no III Congresso Latino-Americano de Ecologia Política, que teve como objetivo debater diferentes experiências de lutas coletivas frentes a projetos de extração de recursos naturais, com a participação de lideranças indígenas, de comunidades tradicionais e intelectuais ativistas. As experiências relatam processos em que houve resistência coletiva a projetos extrativos-coloniais e o direito de dizer “não” foi colocado em prática. De forma geral, as apresentações discutiram o direito de dizer não que emerge para além do direito à consulta, e que tem como pressuposto a garantia da autonomia coletiva sobre os territórios de vida.

Abstract This article brings the transcription and revision of the roundtable discussion held at the III Latin American Congress of Political Ecology, which aimed to debate different experiences of collective struggles against projects of extraction of natural resource, with the participation of indigenous leaders, traditional communities and activist intellectuals. The narratives shares experiences in processes in which there was collective resistance to extractive-colonial projects and the right to say “no” was put into practice. In general, the presentations discussed the right to say no that emerges beyond the right to consultation, and that has as its assumption the guarantee of collective autonomy over life territories.

Resumen Este artículo trae la transcripción y revisión de la mesa redonda realizada en el III Congreso Latinoamericano de Ecología Política, que tuvo como objetivo debatir diferentes experiencias de luchas colectivas contra proyectos de extracción de recursos naturales, con la participación de líderes indígenas, comunidades tradicionales y activistas intelectuales. Las experiencias relataron procesos en los que hubo una resistencia colectiva a los proyectos extractivos-coloniales y se puso en práctica el derecho a decir “no”. En general, en las ponencias se habló del derecho a decir no, que surge más allá del derecho a la consulta, y que tiene como fundamento de garantizar la autonomía colectiva sobre los territorios de vida.

RESUMO Objetivo: na América Latina, especialmente no Brasil, a adoção da plataforma robótica para cirurgia torácica está aumentando gradativamente nos últimos anos. No entanto, apesar da tuberculose e doenças pulmonares inflamatórias serem endêmicas em nosso país, faltam estudos que descrevam os resultados do tratamento cirúrgico robótico das bronquiectasias. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar os resultados cirúrgicos da cirurgia robótica para doenças inflamatórias e infecciosas, determinando a extensão da ressecção, complicações pós-operatórias, tempo operatório e tempo de internação hospitalar. Métodos: estudo retrospectivo a partir de um banco de dados envolvendo pacientes com diagnóstico de bronquiectasia e submetidos à cirurgia torácica robótica em três hospitais brasileiros entre janeiro de 2017 e janeiro de 2020. Resultados: foram incluídos 7 pacientes. A média de idade foi 47 + 18,3 anos (variação, 18-70 anos). A maioria dos pacientes apresentou bronquiectasia não fibrose cística (n=5), seguida de bronquiectasia tuberculosa (n=1) e abscesso pulmonar (n=1). As cirurgias realizadas foram lobectomia (n=3), segmentectomia anatômica (n=3) e bilobectomia (n=1). O tempo médio do console foi de 147 minutos (variação de 61-288 min.) e não houve necessidade de conversão para toracotomia. Complicação pós-operatória ocorreu em um paciente, tratando-se de obstipação com necessidade de lavagem intestinal. A mediana do tempo de drenagem torácica e internação hospitalar, em dias, foi de 1 (variação, 1-6 dias) e 5 (variação, 2-14 dias), respectivamente. Conclusões: a cirurgia torácica robótica para doenças inflamatórias e infecciosas é um procedimento viável e seguro, com baixo risco de complicações e morbidade.

ABSTRACT Objective: in Latin America, especially Brazil, the use of a robotic platform for thoracic surgery is gradually increasing in recent years. However, despite tuberculosis and inflammatory pulmonary diseases are endemic in our country, there is a lack of studies describing the results of robotic surgical treatment of bronchiectasis. This study aims to evaluate the surgical outcomes of robotic surgery for inflammatory and infective diseases by determining the extent of resection, postoperative complications, operative time, and length of hospital stay. Methods: retrospective study from a database involving patients diagnosed with bronchiectasis and undergoing robotic thoracic surgery at three hospitals in Brazil between January of 2017 and January of 2020. Results: a total of 7 patients were included. The mean age was 47 + 18.3 years (range, 18-70 years). Most patients had non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (n=5), followed by tuberculosis bronchiectasis (n=1) and lung abscess (n=1). The performed surgeries were lobectomy (n=3), anatomic segmentectomy (n=3), and bilobectomy (n=1). The median console time was 147 minutes (range 61-288 min.) and there was no need for conversion to open thoracotomy. There were no major complications. Postoperative complications occurred in one patient and it was a case of constipation with the need for an intestinal lavage. The median for chest tube time and hospital stay, in days, was 1 (range, 1-6 days) and 5 (range, 2-14 days) respectively. Conclusions: robotic thoracic surgery for inflammatory and infective diseases is a feasible and safe procedure, with a low risk of complications and morbidity.

Resumo Neste artigo, desenvolvemos uma revisão de percursos recentes das ecologias políticas enquanto comunidades de práticas e movimentos por justiça ambiental, bem como um paradigma de análise científica. Ao introduzir o tema em destaque de 2021 da revista Ambiente e Sociedade “Insurgências Decoloniais e Horizontes Emancipatórios: contribuições da Ecologia Política”, apresentamos uma reflexão sobre a realidade socioambiental contemporânea, marcada por crises, destruição ambiental e emergência climática, com foco no papel da ecologia política como um espaço privilegiado em discutir criticamente as relações socioambientais que se constituem em novas formas de apropriação violenta da natureza. Diante do quadro de tensão do contexto atual marcado pelo fortalecimento de fenômenos como o autoritarismo, o negacionismo e a desigualdade, ressaltamos a construção de contra-narrativas e alternativas que mobilizam outros horizontes de emancipação e projetos de vida por meio de insurgências e movimentos que emergem do protagonismo de populações marginalizadas e das lutas por justiça ambiental.

Abstract This article offers a review of the recent trajectories of political ecologies as communities of practice and movements for environmental justice, as well as a paradigm of scientific analysis. In this introduction to the 2021 special issue “Decolonial Insurgencies and Emancipatory Horizons: contributions from Political Ecology” of the Ambiente & Sociedade journal, we present a reflection on the contemporary socio-environmental reality, characterized by crises, environmental destruction, and climate emergency, focusing on the role of political ecology as a privileged space to critically discuss the socio-environmental relations that constitute new forms of violent appropriation of nature. Facing the tension of the current context marked by the rise of phenomena such as authoritarianism, climate change denial, and inequality, we highlight the construction of counter-narratives and alternatives that mobilize other horizons of emancipation and living projects through insurgencies and movements that emerge from the protagonism of marginalized populations and struggles for environmental justice.

Resumen En este artículo, revisamos las trayectorias recientes de las ecologías políticas como comunidades prácticas y movimientos por justicia ambiental y como un paradigma académico. Introduciendo el tema destacado “Insurgencias Decoloniales y Horizontes Emancipatorios: contribuciones desde la Ecología Política”, presentamos una reflexión sobre la realidad socioambiental contemporánea, marcada por la crisis, la destrucción ambiental y la emergencia climática, centrándonos en el rol de la ecología política como espacio privilegiado para discutir críticamente las relaciones socioambientales que constituyen nuevas formas de apropiación violenta de la naturaleza. Frente a la tensión del contexto actual marcado por el fortalecimiento del autoritarismo, del negacionismo y de la desigualdad, destacamos la construcción de contranarrativas y alternativas que movilizan otros horizontes de emancipación y proyectos de vida a través de insurgencias y movimientos que surgen del protagonismo de las poblaciones marginadas y de las luchas por la justicia ambiental.

Resumo A conquista dos territórios indígenas e doenças epidêmicas sempre andaram lado a lado ao longo da história do Brasil. A atual pandemia do novo coronavirus que está devastando comunidades indígenas segue essa violenta estratégia de conquista. Meu argumento é que o racismo estrutural que conduziu a mais de 200 mortes de pessoas indígenas nos primeiros meses da pandemia deve ser visto não como resultado de atos irresponsáveis de omissão, mas como atos de genocídio.

Abstract The conquest of indigenous territories and epidemic diseases have gone hand in hand throughout the history of Brazil. The current new coronavirus pandemic that is devastating indigenous communities follows this violent strategy of conquest. My argument is that structural racism that has led to the death of more than 200 indigenous people in the first months of the pandemic should be seen not as irresponsible acts of omission, but as acts of genocide.

Resumen La conquista de los territorios indígenas y las enfermedades epidémicas siempre han ido de la mano a lo largo de la historia de Brasil. La pandemia actual del nuevo coronavirus que está devastando a las comunidades indígenas sigue esta estrategia de conquista violenta. Mi argumento es que el racismo structural que produjo más de 200 muertes de indígenas en los primeros meses de la pandemia no debe verse como actos de omisión irresponsables, sino como actos de genocidio.

RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever morbidade, mortalidade e completude da ressecção associadas à cirurgia robótica para o tratamento de câncer de pulmão não pequenas células no Brasil, assim como sobrevida global e sobrevida livre de doença. Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo incluindo pacientes com diagnóstico de carcinoma pulmonar de células não pequenas submetidos à ressecção anatômica por cirurgia robótica em seis hospitais brasileiros entre fevereiro de 2015 e julho de 2018. Os dados foram coletados retrospectivamente de prontuários eletrônicos. Resultados: Foram incluídos 154 pacientes. A média de idade foi de 65,0 ± 9,5 anos (variação: 30-85 anos). Adenocarcinoma foi o principal tipo histológico, em 128 pacientes (81,5%), seguido por carcinoma epidermoide, em 14 (9,0%). Lobectomia foi o tipo de cirurgia mais frequente, em 133 pacientes (86,3%), seguida por segmentectomia anatômica, em 21 (13,7%). A média de tempo operatório foi de 209 + 80 min. Complicações pós-operatórias ocorreram em 32 pacientes (20,4%). Fístula aérea foi a principal complicação, em 15 pacientes (9,5%). A mediana (intervalo interquartil) de permanência hospitalar foi de 4 dias (3-6 dias) e a de tempo de drenagem foi de 2 dias (2-4 dias). Houve mortalidade operatória em 1 paciente (0,5%). O tempo médio de seguimento foi de 326 + 274 dias (variação: 3-1.110 dias). A ressecção foi completa em 97,4% dos casos. A mortalidade geral foi de 1,5% (n = 3), com sobrevida global de 97,5%. Conclusões: A ressecção pulmonar anatômica robótica no tratamento do câncer de pulmão demonstrou ser segura. Um maior tempo de seguimento é necessário para avaliar a sobrevida de longo prazo.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the morbidity, mortality, and rate of complete resection associated with robotic surgery for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer in Brazil, as well as to report the rates of overall survival and disease-free survival in patients so treated. Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung carcinoma and undergoing resection by robotic surgery at one of six hospitals in Brazil between February of 2015 and July of 2018. Data were collected retrospectively from the electronic medical records. Results: A total of 154 patients were included. The mean age was 65 ± 9.5 years (range, 30-85 years). The main histological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma, which was identified in 128 patients (81.5%), followed by epidermoid carcinoma, identified in 14 (9.0%). Lobectomy was performed in 133 patients (86.3%), and segmentectomy was performed in 21 (13.7%). The mean operative time was 209 ± 80 min. Postoperative complications occurred in 32 patients (20.4%). The main complication was air leak, which occurred in 15 patients (9.5%). The median (interquartile range) values for hospital stay and drainage time were 4 days (3-6 days) and 2 days (2-4 days), respectively. There was one death in the immediate postoperative period (30-day mortality rate, 0.5%). The mean follow-up period was 326 ± 274 days (range, 3-1,110 days). Complete resection was achieved in 97.4% of the cases. Overall mortality was 1.5% (3 deaths), and overall survival was 97.5%. Conclusions: Robotic pulmonary resection proved to be a safe treatment for lung cancer. Longer follow-up periods are required in order to assess long-term survival.

Resumo Este artigo discute um dos aspetos mais invisibilizados do racismo no Brasil: o caso do racismo contra os povos indígenas. Na primeira parte, discute-se o vazio na literatura sobre o racismo contra indígenas. Em seguida, são apresentados depoimentos e reflexões de caráter prático e teórico sobre racismo por parte de de autores indígenas. A pesquisa se baseia em dois encontros com intelectuais, artistas e lideranças indígenas para discutir o tema do racismo.

Abstract This article discusses one of the most invisible aspects of racism in Brazil: racism against indigenous peoples. The first part focuses on the gaps about the topic in the literature about racism in Brazil. The following sections present some personal experiences and discussions on the topic of racism from the point of view indigenous persons. The research is based on two meetings with indigenous intellectuals, artists, and leaders from various parts of Brazil focused on discussing the topic of racism.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é contribuir com o debate acerca do desmatamento no contexto da evolução das políticas de gestão fundiária e territorial na Amazônia, destacando seu papel relevante para o reconhecimento de direitos políticos de categorias sociais minoritárias. A associação do desmatamento na Amazônia sempre esteve correlacionada a problemas sociais e envolve diferentes agentes e fatores causadores conforme a área de abrangência e o momento de sua realização. Procuram-se evidenciar alguns dos principais fatores institucionais que contribuem para pôr em xeque as conquistas do modelo socioambiental por meio de um estudo de caso no assentamento rural categoria Projeto Agroextrativista Praialta-Piranheira, Pará. Essa análise permite concluir que a falta de coerência institucional representa um aspecto estrutural cujo desconhecimento incapacita a compreensão das dinâmicas territoriais da Amazônia.

ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to analyze the driving forces of deforestation in the context of the evolution of land use and land management policies, emphasizing their role in the recognition of political rights of minority social groups. The underlying causes of deforestation in the Amazon have always been correlated with social problems and the use of labor in conditions similar to slavery. Such dynamics involves different agents and causative factors embedded in a complex web of historical factors, political forces and economic cycles. This paper emphasizes some of the leading institutional factors that contribute to understanding the achievements of the social-environmental model by means of a case study in the rural settlement “Projeto Agroextrativista Praialta-Piranheira”, in Pará, Brazil. This analysis allowed us to conclude that the lack of institutional coherence is a structural aspect that hinders a better context-driven understanding of the territorial dynamics of Amazonia.

ABSTRACT: This study uses climate modeling (RegCM4 Climate Model) to provide a wind forecast average behavior at low levels, close to the surface. The model was used to generate an estimate of the average vertical wind profile lasting 5 months, from August to December 2015, attempting to observe intra-seasonal variations, with the presence of persistence in the wind field. The results of climate modeling of the wind profile near the surface have the great potential for great operational significance during launch campaigns at the Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara. Three average results were generated for the month of November 2015, while operating in São Lourenço. A dynamical downscaling nested with global models with RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, using 3 different global conditions initialization datasets. It used subsets with the models from the Met Office Hadley Centre (HadGEM2-ES), the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM-CM5), and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO-Mk3.6), making a downscaling with the RegCM4 Climate Model for the Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara region. The results are preliminary but show great potential. Since the RegCM4 Climate Model can show variations of high and low intensity, its temporal frequency in the average vertical wind profile and the duration of temporal variation are of the order of 3 - 5 days. The RegCM4 Climate Model had better results with the one from the Met Office Hadley Centre, HadGEM2-ES, when it was qualitatively compared with observational data (ERA Interim Model) of the campaign period and reanalysis data.

OBJECTIVES: To determine possible variations in the Anthropometric Index for pectus excavatum relative to age, race, and sex in individuals free of thoracic wall deformities. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, 166 individuals with morphologically normal thoracic walls consented to have their chests and the perimeter of the lower third of the thorax measured according to the Anthropometric Index for pectus excavatum. The participant characteristics are presented (114 men and 52 women; 118 Caucasians and 48 people of African descent). RESULTS: Measurements of the Anthropometric Index for pectus excavatum were statistically significantly different between men and women (11-40 years old); however, no significant difference was found between Caucasians and people of African descent. For men, the index measurements were not significantly different across all of the age groups. For women, the index measurements were significantly lower for individuals aged 3 to 10 years old than for individuals aged 11 to 20 years old and 21 to 40 years old; however, no such difference was observed between women aged 11 to 20 years old and those aged 21 to 40 years old. CONCLUSION: In the sample, significant differences were observed between women aged 11 to 40 years old and the other age groups; however, there was no difference between Caucasian and people of African descent.

INTRODUÇÃO: O pectus excavatum (PEX) caracteriza-se por depressão do esterno em relação ao gradeado costal. Medidas clínicas e objetivas para classificar esse defeito são raras e de difícil aplicação. Este trabalho tem por objetivo criar um índice antropométrico para PEX (IA) como método diagnóstico e de avaliação pré e pós-operatória, comparando-o ao índice de Haller (IH) e ao índice vertebral inferior (IV). MÉTODOS: No período de dezembro de 2001 a fevereiro de 2004 foram estudados dois grupos de pacientes no Serviço de Cirurgia Torácica do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HC-FMUSP): a) 30 pacientes com a caixa torácica com configuração normal ao exame físico; b) 20 pacientes portadores de PEX. Estes últimos foram operados pela técnica de Ravitch modificada por Robicsek e pelo Serviço de Cirurgia Torácica do HC-FMUSP, sendo estudados no pós-operatório. Todos os pacientes foram avaliados a partir do IA (medidas clínicas), do IH (medidas tomográficas) e do IV (medidas radiográficas) no nível da maior deformidade (MD), no caso dos PEX e no terço distal do esterno (TD), nos normais. Os pacientes operados foram novamente medidos entre o 60º e o 80º dia do pós-operatório. RESULTADOS: Houve elevada correlação entre o IA e o IH (80% p< 0,001) e entre o IA e o IV (79% p< 0,001). A acurácia dos três índices foi similar, sendo que se estabeleceram os seguintes pontos de corte: IA= 0,12; IH= 3,10; e IV= 0,25. Ao ser analisado o pré-operatório, foi verificado para os três índices, que mais de 75% dos portadores de PEX encontravam-se acima dos pontos de corte e foram confirmados como portadores do defeito. No pós-operatório os valores dos índices encontrados abaixo do ponto de corte foram considerados dentro do padrão normal e isso ocorreu em 100% para o IA, em mais de 50% para o IH, e em 50% para o IV. CONCLUSÕES: O IA permitiu mensurar adequadamente o defeito, mantendo: a) alta correlação com o IH e o IV e elevada acurácia, semelhante à desses índices já consagrados; b) eficaz comparação entre o pré e pós-operatório.

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum (PEX) is a depression of the sternum in relation to the costal cartilages. Clinical and objective measures for classifying the defect are rare and difficult to apply. The present study aimed to create an anthropometric index (AI) for PEX as a method for diagnosis and for preoperative and postoperative assessment by comparing it to the Haller index (HI) and to the lower vertebral index (LVI). METHODS: From December 2001 to February 2004, 2 groups of patients were studied at our institution: a) 30 patients with normal configuration of the thoracic cage, upon physical examination; b) 20 patients with PEX. The latter underwent surgery according to the Ravitch technique modified by Robicsek, and they were evaluated in the postoperative period. All patients were assessed by means of the AI (clinical), HI (tomographic), and LVI (radiographic) measures at the level of deepest deformity in the case of the PEX patients, and in the distal third of the sternum in the normal patients. The patients who had undergone surgery were once again measured between the 60th and the 80th postoperative days. RESULTS: There was a high correlation between the AI and the HI (80% P < .001) and between the AI and the LVI (79% P < .001). The accuracy of the 3 indices was similar, in that the following cut points were established: AI = 0.12, HI = 3.10, and LVI = 0.25. Upon analyzing the preoperative results, we verified that for the 3 indices, over 75% of the patients with pectus excavatum were above the cut points and were confirmed as having the defect. In the postoperative results, the value of the indices found below the cut point was considered within the normal standard, and this occurred in 100% for the AI, in over 50% for the HI, and in 50% for the LVI. CONCLUSIONS: The AI allowed adequate measurement of the defect, maintaining a) a high correlation with the HI and the LVI and a high accuracy, similar to the already acknowledged and published indices and b) an efficient comparison between the preoperative measurement and the postoperative results.
