Special attention has emerged towards biomass smoke-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), providing new knowledge for prevention and therapeutic approach of non-smoker COPD patients. However, the understanding of biomass smoke COPD is still limited and somewhat controversial. The aim of the present study was to compare COPD exclusively caused by tobacco smoking with COPD exclusively caused by environmental or occupational exposures. For this cross-sectional study, COPD patients were recruited from outpatient clinics and formed two groups: non-smoker COPD group (n=16) with exposure to biomass smoke who did not smoke cigarette and tobacco smoker COPD group (n=15) with people who did not report biomass smoke exposure. Subjects underwent pulmonary function tests, thoracic high-resolution computed tomography, 6-min walk test, and sputum induction. The non-smoker COPD group had biomass smoke exposure of 133.3±86 hour-years. The tobacco COPD group smoked 48.5±27.4 pack-years. Women were 62.5 and 66.7%, respectively, of non-smokers and smokers. The non-smoker COPD group showed higher prevalence of dyspnea, lower arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), and lower arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2%) with similar spirometry results, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity. Regarding inflammatory biomarkers, differences were detected in sputum number of lymphomononuclear cells and in sputum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 with higher values in the smoker group. Emphysema was more prevalent in the tobacco smoker group, which also showed higher relative bronchial wall thickness and lower lung density by quantitative analysis. Biomass smoke induced more hypoxemia compared to tobacco in COPD patients with similar severity.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to clinically evaluate the effects of intra ruminal administration of two different amounts of mango in sheep. The sample was of seven male healthy sheep, which did not receive non-fibrous carbohydrates for at least six months prior to the trial. Rumen fluid pH, total of protozoa in the rumen fluid, urine pH, estimated blood pH, and vital parameters were evaluated at the following times: zero, 12, 16, 20 and 24 hours after administration of the mango. The seven sheep were randomly divided into two groups and received either 0.625% or 1.875% of the dry matter of the pulp and mango peel per kg body weight (M1 and M2, respectively), distributed in cross-over design with a lost portion and 30 days washout. Sheep treated with M2 showed significantly lower average values for ruminal pH than the M1 since T12 (5.1 and 6.9, respectively), indicating the occurrence of ruminal acidosis. The animals treated with M1 showed no systemic changes, while the sheep treated with M2 had mild metabolic acidosis, detected through the lower urinary pH (4.8). The in natura mango ingestion in the amount of 1.875% of the dry matter of mango per kg of body weight proved to provoke rumen acidosis in sheep, leading these animals to: slight depression, rise in heart rate, diminished rumen movement, and diarrhea in some cases.

ABSTRACT This study meant to characterize the morphology of the testicle from (Dasyprocta prymnolopha) agouti males, in order to collaborate with the knowledge of reproductive morphophysiology of the specie. Testicles were used from 47 animals aged between 1 and 2 years, homogeneous weight (2.08±0.23kg), coming from the Centre for the Study and Conservation of Wild Animals of Agricultural Sciences Center of the Federal University of Piauí. The structures were dissected, described and fragments were processed for light microscopy, and, subsequently, gonadal activity was evaluated. Testes were observed to be elongated ellipsoidal bodies that can be found in the groin or in the abdominal cavity, not having a clearly defined scrotum. We also could see parenchymal with standard histological characteristic for the mammalian body, with the identification of eight types of cell associations, characterized epithelium Seminiferous stages of the cycle, with lower and higher frequency of stages 3 and 5, respectively.

ABSTRACT Ureteral ectopia is a congenital disease that is characterized when one or both ureters are shown inserted outside their anatomic site, with the possible insertion in the uterus, bladder neck, the urethra or vagina due to abnormal differentiation of ducts mesonephrics and metanephrics. In males the insertion can also occur in the vas deferens and prostate. Urinary incontinence is the most common clinical sign associated with ectopic ureter. This report describes a case of unilateral extramural ectopic ureter in a dog of the Labrador Retriever breed at seven years old surgically corrected, and shows the importance of contrast radiographic examination and ultrasound.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Corn is traditionally grown in two annual harvests in Brazil and consumed by humans and animals. The use of herbicides to control weeds in this crop may compromise the environment, affecting non-target organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of atrazine and nicosulfuron on the predator Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). The treatments consisted of application of a combination of atrazine and nicosulfuron in doses equivalent to the commercial dose, plus a water-based control. The solution with herbicides was sprayed on two- day- old eggs of P. nigrispinus and at each ofthe five nymphal stages and adult phase ofthe insects. The viability of eggs of P. nigrispinus decreased under the action of the herbicides, without differences regarding time of hatching. The survival of nymphs was low under the effect of the herbicides, being more adversely affected by the action ofthe herbicide mixtures. For the application at each stage, we observed a low survival rate of nymphs from the first to the third instar under the action ofthe herbicide atrazine, alone, or in combination, and even at the second stage for nicosulfuron. Lower selectivity to herbicide mixture also became evident at all the insect stages, compared to the isolated effect. It was concluded that eggs of P. nigrispinus are sensitive to herbicides and that application of such products on corn may decrease the biological pest control provided by this insect.

This study aimed to characterize the common phosphates, a bone meal and a limestone usually used in Brazilian agriculture and livestock. The solutions used to measure the solubility of phosphates were 2 and 10% citric acid. Calcinated bone meal and bovine mineral supplement presented very low solubilities. Many techniques were employed in the mineral analyses: X-ray diffractometry, atomic absorption with carbon furnace, colorimetric and gravimetric techniques and instrumental neutron activation. Except for limestone, monoammonium and ammonium sulfate phosphate, many tested phosphates are simultaneously P and Ca sources. Many of these products are also sources of one or more elements such as S, Si, Na, Fe, Zn and Co.

The antinociceptive effect and the acute toxicity of Hyptis fruticosa leaves were evaluated through the administration of its aqueous extract in mice. The extract, administered orally (200, 400, and 500 mg/kg), reduced the nociceptive response in the writhing test as well as in the early phase of the formalin test (100 and 400 mg/kg) and it increased the latency time in the hot plate test (100 and 200 mg/kg). The antinociceptive effect was reversed by naloxone (5 mg/kg, i.p.). Moreover, no animal deaths were observed in doses up to 5 g/kg. In conclusion, the aqueous extract of Hyptis fruticosa showed no acute toxicity at the evaluated doses and revealed antinociceptive effect in mice. Such effects are possibly associated with the opioid system activation.

The economic viability of a milk production system with crossbred (F1) cattle, through analysis of costs and income of the activity and assessment of benefit/total income index was evaluated. Data were from the Research Experimental Unit of EPAMIG, located at Felixlandia City, Minas Gerais State, and refer to two equal periods of 1 year each. The following parameters were analyzed: benefit/total income, raising cost of calves and its importance upon income. The viability of the system was demonstrated by the benefit/total income index of 20.2% and 37.6% for year 1 and 2, respectively. The calf sale accounted for 25% of the total income.
