Abstract Purpose: Are men more inclined to assume risks than women? The answer to this question is immediately relevant to various economic issues, including human behavior concerning medical remedies and procedures consumption. This paper aims to identify the perceived benefits of the consumption of medications centered on pharmaceutical risk assessment. Originality/value: The literature documents that risks and benefits can be considered the main trade-offs in consumer decision-making, including the pharmaceutical industry. It is a current theme with a high potential for social impact due to the many identified cases of Covid-19. In developing countries, most medication is used by self-medicating individuals, as access to health care can be insufficient. Self-medication is a potentially greater problem, as in this case, medication usage often follows advice from friends, relatives, and neighbors. Yet, there is little empirical evidence regarding this problem in the context of emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of over 1,000 subjects using an extended regression model (ERM) in one of the biggest countries in the world, Brazil. Findings: The results reported that women perceive more risks and benefits from medication usage and medical procedures. The perception of the benefits of medications can be explained by the following dimensions: risk (personal injury, risk alertness, and risk awareness), gender, regular usage, and the benefits of medical procedures. Regarding risk dimensions, the lower the perceptions of personal injury and the higher the perceptions of risk alertness and risk awareness, the greater the perceived benefits of medication usage.

Resumo Objetivo: Os homens estão mais inclinados a assumir riscos do que as mulheres? A resposta a essa pergunta é de relevância imediata para várias questões econômicas, incluindo o comportamento humano em relação ao consumo de medicamentos e procedimentos médicos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar os benefícios percebidos do consumo de medicamentos, centrado na avaliação do risco farmacêutico. Originalidade/valor: A literatura documenta que riscos e benefícios podem ser considerados os principais trade-offs na tomada de decisão do consumidor, inclusive na indústria farmacêutica. É um tema atual com alto potencial de impacto social por causa dos muitos casos identificados de Covid-19. Nos países em desenvolvimento, a maioria dos medicamentos é utilizada por indivíduos que se automedicam, pois o acesso aos cuidados de saúde pode ser insuficiente. A automedicação é um problema potencialmente maior, pois nesse caso o uso de medicamentos geralmente segue o conselho de amigos, parentes e vizinhos. No entanto, há pouca evidência empírica sobre esse problema no contexto dos países emergentes. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Trata-se de uma pesquisa com mais de mil indivíduos em que se utilizou um modelo de regressão estendido (MRE) em um dos maiores países do mundo, o Brasil. Resultados: De acordo com os resultados obtidos, as mulheres percebem mais riscos e benefícios do uso de medicamentos e procedimentos médicos. A percepção dos benefícios dos medicamentos pode ser explicada pelas seguintes dimensões: risco (danos pessoais, alerta de risco e conhecimento do risco), gênero, uso regular e benefícios dos procedimentos médicos. Em relação às dimensões de risco, quanto menor a percepção de danos pessoais e quanto maior a percepção de alerta e conhecimento de risco, maiores os benefícios percebidos do uso de medicamentos.

Resumen Objetivo: describir los efectos de la neuromodulación en el desempeño de funciones ejecutivas en pacientes con sobrepeso y/o obesidad. Métodos: se seleccionaron artículos publicados en las bases de datos PubMed, ScienceDirect, BIREME y Web of Science utilizando la siguiente combinación de descriptores: (“resolución de problemas” O “función ejecutiva” O memoria) Y (tDCS O TMS) Y obesidad. Después de aplicar los criterios de selección, 08 artículos fueron incluidos para el análisis. Resultados: los artículos incluidos tuvieron un promedio de 30,1 participantes por estudio, con un mínimo de 12 y un máximo de 76. El estado nutricional general osciló entre bajo peso y obesidad grado 3, y el índice de masa corporal promedio general fue de 28,1 kg/m2. En cuanto a los instrumentos utilizados para evaluar las funciones ejecutivas, los más frecuentes fueron: paradigma del flanqueador; rivalidad binocular para la supresión continua de flash (bCFS/NoCFS); tarea de Stroop; Tarea Go/No-Go; y tarea N-back. Los resultados primarios dependieron del sitio objetivo de la neuromodulación. Se observó una reducción del antojo de alimentos y un mejor rendimiento en el grupo activo debido a la disminución del tiempo de respuesta y al aumento de la precisión en las tareas cognitivas. Conclusión: la neuromodulación puede generar cambios en las funciones ejecutivas, reduciendo el antojo de alimentos en personas con sobrepeso y obesidad.

Abstract Objective: to describe the effects of neuromodulation on the performance of executive functions in overweight and/or individuals with obesity. Methods: articles published in PubMed, ScienceDirect, BIREME, and Web of Science databases were selected using the following combination of descriptors: (“problem solving” OR “executive function” OR memory) AND (tDCS OR TMS) AND obesity. After applying the selection criteria, 08 articles were included for analysis. Results: the articles included had an average of 30.1 participants per study, with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 76. The overall nutritional status ranged from underweight to grade 3 obesity, and the general mean body mass index was 28,1 kg/m2. Regarding the instruments used to assess executive functions, the most frequent were: the flanker paradigm; binocular rivalry for Continuous Flash Suppression (bCFS/NoCFS); Stroop task; Go/No-Go task; and N-back task. The primary outcomes were dependent on the neuromodulation target site. Reduced food craving and improved performance in the active group were observed from decreased response time and increased precision in cognitive tasks. Conclusion: neuromodulation can generate changes in executive functions, reducing food cravings in overweight and individuals with obesity.

ABSTRACT This study verifies the association between the text sentiment of news items and the value of capital investments in the equity crowdfunding market. It also analyzes the influence of geographic attributes on the investments made. Based on data for 736 investments made in different ventures in the largest equity crowdfunding platform in one of the main emerging markets, this study’s results indicate that the attributes of ventures can affect the amount of capital invested in them. In addition, published mass media news items that have a greater quantity of positive words can stimulate larger investments in these ventures. On the other hand, the geographic distance between the entrepreneur and the investor can negatively affect the value of these investments. These results are relevant since they can contribute to the definition of fundraising strategies on the part of entrepreneurs and platform managers.

Resumo Objetivo Este estudo explora as condições de crédito comercial por meio de seu potencial para reduzir a assimetria da informação entre compradores e vendedores em um contexto de mercado emergente. Referencial teórico A linha teórica testada empiricamente neste artigo concentra-se na assimetria da informação entre empresas vendedoras e seus clientes compradores. Metodologia Com base em pesquisa (survey) com os CFOs de mais de 300 PMEs que atuam no Brasil, usamos regressões lineares e logit para testar nossas hipóteses. Resultados Os resultados apontam para evidências de uma variação considerável nas políticas e práticas, e para o fato de que parte da variação pode ser explicada em função das características da empresa. Identifica-se, ainda, sustentação para uma série de hipóteses baseadas em argumentos sobre formas de resolver a assimetria da informação entre compradores e vendedores, bem como a discriminação de preços. Implicações práticas e sociais da pesquisa Os empreendedores podem se beneficiar dos resultados deste estudo para gerenciar a assimetria da informação, além de estabelecer adequadamente os prazos de crédito. Contribuições O período de crédito permite que os compradores reduzam as incertezas quanto à qualidade do produto antes de efetuarem o pagamento e que os vendedores resolvam quaisquer incertezas que possam ter sobre as intenções de pagamento do comprador. Esse fenômeno, no entanto, é sensível a questões do ambiente institucional e, segundo evidências empíricas, pouco se sabe sobre as pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs) que atuam em mercados emergentes, que se caracterizam por sua incerteza e assimetria da informação.

Abstract Purpose This study explores trade credit conditions by way of their potential for reducing information asymmetry between buyers and sellers in an emerging market context. Theoretical framework The theoretical line tested empirically in this article focuses on the information asymmetry between selling companies and their buying customers. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey among the CFOs of more than 300 SMEs that operate in Brazil we use linear and logit regressions to test our hypotheses. Findings The results point to evidence of a considerable variation in policies and practices, and to the fact that part of the variation can be explained in terms of the characteristics of the firm. Support is also identified for a series of hypotheses based on arguments about ways of resolving information asymmetry between buyers and sellers, as well as price discrimination. Practical & social implications of research Entrepreneurs can benefit from the results of this study to manage information asymmetry, as well as to properly establish credit terms. Originality/value The credit period allows buyers to reduce uncertainties as to the quality of the product before they pay, and sellers can settle any uncertainties they might have about the buyer’s payment intentions. This phenomenon, however, is sensitive to institutional environment issues, and according to the empirical evidence little is known about small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in emerging markets, which are characterized by their information uncertainty and asymmetry.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar os teores de C das frações químicas e físicas da MOS em diferentes sistemas de manejo em um Argissolo textura arenosa. O estudo foi realizado em uma área de referência de Mata Nativa (MN) e três áreas manejadas: pastagem permanente (PP), sistema plantio direto (SPD) e área de Reserva Particular de Patrimônio Natural em processo de regeneração natural (RPPN). Foram coletadas amostras de solos das camadas de 0-0,05, 0,05-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m. Foi determinado a densidade do solo (Ds) os teores de carbono orgânico total (COT) o fracionamento químico da MOS com determinação dos teores de C dos ácidos fúlvicos (AF), ácidos húmicos (AH) e humina (HUM), com posteriores cálculos das relações AH/AF, EA/HUM, estoque (EstC), fracionamento físico-granulométrico e determinação dos teores de C da matéria orgânica particulada (C-MOP) e índice de manejo de carbono (IMC). Observou-se maiores teores de COT para a área de MN, especialmente nas camadas de 0-0,05 e 0,05-0,10 m. Os teores de C-HUM predominam em relação aos teores de C-AH e C-AF. Os teores de C-AH e de C-HUM foram superiores em MN e SPD. A MN apresentou maiores teores de C-MOP em todas as camadas avaliadas. Para o C-MOM a área de SPD foi superior as demais áreas manejadas. As áreas manejadas apresentaram valores de EstMOP inferiores à MN. Nas duas primeiras camadas, a área de MN apresentou maiores EstMOM. As áreas manejadas apresentaram valores inferiores de IMC em relação a MN. A área de SPD demonstrou que, mesmo em sucessão, contribui para melhoria da fração orgânica do solo ao longo do tempo de adoção, se aproximando às condições da MN. Já as áreas de PP e RPPN evidenciaram que o manejo inadequado favorece na diminuição da qualidade edáfica.

Abstract This study quantified the C content of the chemical and physical fractions of SOM in different management systems in an Argisoil of sandy texture. The study was carried out in a reference area of Native Forest (NF), and in three managed areas: Permanent Pasture (PP), No-Tillage System (NTS) and an area of Private Natural Heritage Reserve (PNHR) in the process of natural regeneration. Soil samples were collected in the layers 0.0-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m. We assessed the soil density (Sd), total organic carbon (TOC) content, chemical fractionation of SOM with determination of the C contents of the fulvic acids (FA), humic acids (HA) and humin (HUM), with subsequent calculations of the HA/FA ratios, AE/HUM, stock (StockC), physical granulometric fractionation and determination of C contents of particulate organic matter (C-POM) and carbon management index (CMI). Higher TOC contents were observed for the NF area. The C-HA and C-HUM contents were higher in the NF and NTS. NF showed higher C-POM levels in all layers evaluated. For the C-MOM, the NTS area was superior to the other managed areas. The managed areas had lower StockPOM values than the NF. The managed areas had lower CMI values in relation to NF. The NTS area showed that, even in crop succession, it contributes to the improvement of the soil organic fraction over the adoption time. On the other hand, the areas of PP and PNHR showed that inadequate management favors the reduction of edaphic quality.

Resumo Objetivo O tema da escolha sob risco tem sido estudado a partir da premissa de que os tomadores de decisão são plenamente informados. Contudo, em situações da vida real, frequentemente os indivíduos necessitam fazer escolhas sem que estejam suficientemente munidos de informações essenciais ao julgamento. Esta pesquisa concentra-se na análise da decisão sob as condições de ausência de informações acerca de probabilidades de perda e dos potenciais impactos, contexto de ignorância, alternativamente à escolha sob risco ou incerteza. Referencial teórico Este estudo apoia-se em aspectos teóricos a respeito da tomada de decisão sob ignorância, especificamente em contexto de decisão de aquisição de seguros. Metodologia Utilizamos procedimentos de One Way ANOVA e regressões com base em dados coletados em dois experimentos acerca da disposição para adquirir garantia estendida para eletroeletrônicos, dos quais participaram mais de 130 indivíduos voluntários. Implicações práticas e sociais da pesquisa Ao tornar acessíveis informações relevantes para a decisão de consumo de maneira transparente, agentes podem induzir o surgimento de consumidores, tornar o mercado mais eficiente e a sociedade, mais resiliente a riscos. Contribuições Este estudo pode ser pioneiro em proporcionar evidências empíricas acerca da decisão de compra de seguros em contexto de ignorância em mercados emergentes.

Abstract Purpose The subject of making choices under risk has been studied based on the assumption that decision makers are fully informed. However, in real life situations individuals frequently need to make choices without the benefit of essential information. This study analyzes decision making in the absence of information about the probabilities of losses and potential impacts, which constitutes a context of ignorance, or alternatively making choices under risk or uncertainty. Theoretical framework This study is supported by theoretical aspects related to decision making under ignorance, specifically within the context of buying insurance. Design/methodology/approach We used One Way ANOVA and regressions based on the data collected from two experiments regarding the willingness to acquire extended warranties for electronic equipment, which involved the participation of over 130 volunteers. Findings Our findings suggest that the absence of economic information – deficient disclosure – makes the cost of insurance relevant to the consumer and is negatively associated with the propensity to acquire it. In addition, the cost of repairs and the probability of equipment breaking increase the propensity to acquire an extended warranty. Practical & social implications of research By making information relevant to consumption decisions and accessible in a transparent manner, agents can induce a surge in consumption, making the market more efficient and society more resilient in the face of risks. Originality/value This study may be the first to provide empirical evidence regarding the purchase of insurance within a context of ignorance in emerging markets.
