ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) and to identify the differences in associated factors to its occurrence in urban area and countrysides in the municipality of Santa Luzia located in the semi-arid region of Paraíba. In the years 2015 and 2016, 779 blood samples from dogs were collected. The prevalence was determined by three serological techniques, ELISA-S7® Kit, DPP® Rapid Test and EIE-LVC® Kit, considering positive the samples that reacted in at least two assays. Associated factors were determined by univariate and multivariate analyzes of the guardians’ responses to the epidemiological questionnaire. The prevalence of anti-Leishmania infantum antibodies in the studied municipality was 15.00% (117/779), being higher in the urban area (15.20%) than in the countryside (13.60%). The neighborhood with the highest prevalence was Frei Damião with 26.40% (33/125), being considered a hotspot (OR 1.245, p=0.007). Other associated factors were the semi-domiciliary breeding (OR 1.798, p=0.025), in the urban area, and hunting dog (OR 18.505, p=0.016), contact with cattle (OR 17.298, p=0.022) and environment where the dog is raised (OR 4.802, p=0.024) in the countryside. In the municipality of Santa Luzia, the prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis is high and the disease is widely distributed. Epidemiological differences between urban area and the countryside could be observed demonstrating the need for more adequate control measures for each locality and proving the urbanization process.

Abstract Bisphenol A is an endocrine interfering compound, produced and used on a large scale worldwide. Chemical and biologic methods can be used to remove it from the environment. Biological methods are considered less costly, safer and, according to green chemistry definitions, an environmentally correct method. Considering the use of a crude enzyme broth, without any downstream process, the costs could be mostly reduced. Thus, the removal of bisphenol A by Pleurotus sajor-caju crude enzyme broth was investigated. Initially, the agro-industrial wastes were characterized and, the composition of the culture medium and the bioreactor culture conditions were defined. The enzyme produced in the highest concentration was characterized and the crude broth used in the bisphenol A removal assays. The OXI45 culture medium presented the highest laccase activity (1,850.7 U L-1, 350 rpm). Greater laccase stability was observed at 20 - 40 oC and pHs 5 - 7. Vanillin and ferulic acid (considered mediator compounds) were identified in the crude broth, probably helping on the obtention of the high value of removal effectiveness (0.052 mg U-1 h-1). The results indicate the potential use of the Pleurotus sajor-caju crude enzyme broth to obtain an enzymatic formulation for application in the environmental area.

(Arq Bras Cardiol. 2020; 115(2):219-225)
Abstract Background Recurrent ischemic events are mediated by atherosclerotic plaque instability, whereas death after an ischemic event results from gravity of insult and ability of the organism to adapt. The distinct nature of those types of events may respond for different prediction properties of clinical and anatomical information regarding type of outcome. Objective To identify prognostic properties of clinical and anatomical data in respect of fatal and non-fatal outcomes of patients hospitalized with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Methods Patients consecutively admitted with ACS who underwent coronary angiography were recruited. The SYNTAX score was utilized as an anatomic model and the GRACE score as a clinical model. The predictive capacity of those scores was separately evaluated for prediction of non-fatal ischemic outcomes (infarction and refractory angina) and cardiovascular death during hospitalization. It was considered as significant a p-value <0,05. Results EAmong 365 people, cardiovascular death was observed in 4,4% and incidence of non-fatal ischemic outcomes in 11%. For cardiovascular death, SYNTAX and GRACE score presented similar C-statistic of 0,80 (95% IC: 0,70 – 0,92) and 0,89 (95% IC 0,81 – 0,96), respectively – p = 0,19. As for non-fatal ischemic outcomes, the SYNTAX score presented a moderate predictive value (C-statistic = 0,64; 95%IC 0,55 – 0,73), whereas the GRACE score did not presented association with this type of outcome (C-statistic = 0,50; 95%IC 0,40-0,61) – p = 0,027. Conclusion Clinical and anatomic models similarly predict cardiovascular death in ACS. However, recurrence of coronary instability is better predicted by anatomic variables than clinical data. The chemical and spectroscopic characteristics of soil organic matter (SOM) isolated from Amazonian dark earth (ADE) and surrounding soil (SR) were evaluated according to the soil depth. The results showed opposite trends for the soils. While ADE featured SOM with a greater aromatic condensation degree and greater hydrophobicity in the top layer, the SR showed more aliphatic and polar SOM. The SOM arrangement from ADE was less hydrophobic, aromatic, and more polar in depth. In contrast, the SOM from SR showed an increase in molecular weight and hydrophobicity. Besides the aromatic protection in the SOM from ADE, there was organo-mineral protection through binding to soil minerals. This suggested that the SOM from ADE was protected by its hydrophobicity and interaction with minerals compared with that from the SR, thereby showing that the combination of both characteristics is important to create new technologies for soil carbon storage.

Cocos nucifera L. is a palm tree of paramount importance in the food and chemistry industries, although over 50% of its biomass is discarded as waste. The aim of the study is to investigate different pretreatments in to coconut husks (CH), based on acid, alkaline, ionic liquid (IL), and peroxidative, in order to produce fermentable sugars. Severity factors were calculated for pretreatments; values ranged from 0.3 to 1.7 for peroxide, from 0.01 to 1.4 for alkaline, from 1.4 to 2.8 for acid and from 2.0 to 3.0 for ionic liquid. Pretreatments were optimized (time and temperature) to maximize the sugar yield and to remove the total lignin after acid hydrolysis. Reducing sugar yield (70%) was higher when CH waste was alkaline-pretreated for 2 h at 76.21 °C. The highest lignin removal rate was recorded when alkaline (21.4%) and peroxide solutions (27.2%) were used. The IL did not increase sugar yield and was not effective in lignin removal. These outcomes were confirmed through infrared spectroscopy, whereas scanning electron microscopy showed increased biomass porosity during alkaline, acid and peroxide pretreatments. The IL showed little and non-significant changes. The crystallinity index notably increased after each pretreatment; besides, it was directly associated with sugar content.

ABSTRACT Changes in the amounts and proportions of leukocytes, known as leucocyte profiles, have been documented for several bird species and have been used to measure stress levels in these animals. The present work ascertained the biological and ecological attributes that influence the leukocyte profile of Antilophia galeata (Lichtenstein, 1823), the helmeted manakin. This species has been deemed useful in ecological studies because it responds to environmental changes. Blood samples drawn from 89 individuals of A. galeata captured in a Cerrado forest fragment were subjected to analysis under optical microscopy to identify and quantify leukocytes and micronuclei. The number of lymphocytes was greater for males, non-reproductive individuals and individuals infected with ticks. None of the leukocyte components differed in relation to age, molting or body condition index. The amount of micronuclei was correlated with values for total leukocytes, H/L ratio, heterophils, basophils and monocytes. The results suggest that reproduction may be an immunosuppressive factor for the species, producing sexual differences in lymphocyte availability. In addition, biomarkers of genotoxic damage (micronuclei) were related to the amount of leukocytes, indicating that individuals may be sensitive to environmental disturbances. Leukocyte profiles can be considered a useful tool for addressing ecological questions that are relevant to the conservation of species in degraded environments.

Abstract We present postmortem evidence of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) in a patient with severe COVID-19. Autopsies of COVID-19 confirmed cases were performed. The patient died despite antimicrobials, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor support. Histopathology and peripheral blood galactomannan antigen testing confirmed IPA. Aspergillus penicillioides infection was confirmed by nucleotide sequencing and BLAST analysis. Further reports are needed to assess the occurrence and frequency of IPA in SARS-CoV-2 infections, and how they interact clinically.

The development of films from natural polymers is an alternative to reduce the consumption of packaging obtained from non-renewable sources. The formation of edible films requires a polymeric material that forms a homogeneous and continuous matrix. The gelatin is a natural polymer, cheap and abundant, characteristics that instigate its use. The aim of this study was preparing and characterize gelatin films and evaluate the influence of lemon essential oil nanoemulsion on gelatin matrix for an innovative application of the product. The films were characterized for their water vapor permeability (WVP) test, contact angle, thickness and mechanical analysis (tensile strength and elongation at break). The particle size showed an average of 170.6 nm and zeta potential around -10.9 mV. The incorporation of lemon nanoemulsion increased the water vapor permeability of the gelatin and the elongation, but decreased tensile strength due to the interaction with the hydrophobic portion of the polymer matrix.

ABSTRACT: The irrigated rotational grazing system is an alternative for sheep farming in the Brazilian semi-arid region. However, the mean limitation for its implementation is the difficulty to control gastrointestinal nematodes. The objective of this research was to determine management measures for the control of the gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in irrigated rotational grazing and to perform the economic analysis of the system. The experiment was carried out on a farm in the Municipality of Belém do São Francisco, Pernambuco, from April 2013 to September 2014, in a herd of 646 to 859 crossbred Dorper x Santa Inês sheep, reared in an area of 12 hectares with coast cross (Cynodon dactylon) pastures divided into 24 paddocks. For grazing, the sheep were divided into two groups: one of lactating ewes and their lambs, and the other with non-lactating ewes and ewe hoggets older than two months. Both groups grazed three days in each paddock and each paddock lasted 36 days without being grazed. Antihelminth Fecal Egg Count Reduction Tests were performed at the beginning of the experiment and annually, resulting in the annual change of the drug used. In the second year, for fecal collections and for selective anthelmintic treatment, the ewes and the non-lactating sheep were divided into two subgroups each: fat and thin lactating ewes, and fat and thin non-lactating ewes. Each month, feces of 10% of the sheep of each subgroup were collected for egg counts and larval culture. Treatments were performed when the mean fecal egg counts were greater than 1000/g. Samples of grass were collected every two months to count and identify grass free-living Trichostrongylidae larvae. During the 18 months of study, approximately 3797 individual anthelmintic treatments were performed, equivalent to 6.49 treatments per sheep (3.97 in 2013 and 2.52 in 2014). The most prevalent helminth in coprocultures (50%-85%) and pasture (83.2%) was Haemonchus contortus. The lowest numbers of infective larvae in the pasture (94 to 111 larvae L3/kg DM) occurred on days 35 and 2 to 8 of grazing. The highest numbers occurred between days 17 to 20 (374 to 761 L3/kg DM). The meat production of the farm was 1023 kg per hectare and the profitability was 3.31%. It is concluded that grazing the paddocks for 3 days, with a rest of 36 days and using selective treatments, allows the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in irrigated rotational grazing systems. However, annual resistance tests are necessary to mitigate resistance of parasites to anti-helminths.

ABSTRACT: Twenty two cases of meningiomas in dogs, diagnosed in about 18 years, were analyzed. The neoplasms were histologicaly classified and graded according to the World and Health Organization (WHO of 2007) for human meningiomas, adapted for dogs, in Grade I (G-I; benign), Grade II (G-II; atypical), and Grade III (G-III; anaplastic or malignant). Additional data about gender, age, breed, skull conformation, clinical course and signs, anatomic localization, gross and histological findings were obtained from the necropsy reports. Intracranial and supratentorial meningiomas were the most frequent in relation to the other intracranial or intraspinal sites. The intracranial ones were characterized mainly by clinical signs of thalamic-cortical alteration. Intraspinal ones were mainly characterized by ataxia. G-I meningiomas were the most frequent (63.6%) in dogs, followed by G-III (22.7%) and G-II (13.6%). GI were characterized by having the psammomatous subtype as the most frequent, more than one morphological pattern in the same tumor, one third presenting areas of invasion of nervous tissue, 71.4% of cases involving females, a mean age of 11 years, pure breed dogs as the most affected ones and for having the longest survival time after the manifestation of clinical signs. G-II meningiomas were characterized by having the chordoid subtype as the most frequent, invasion of nervous tissue in one third of cases, only females affected, a mean age of 12 years, two-thirds of the dogs affected were mongrels and the maximum survival time of 20 days. The G-III meningiomas were characterized by having the papillary subtype as the most frequent, invasion of the nervous tissue in 80% of the cases, 60% of the cases involving females, a mean age of 8 years, 80% of dogs affected were Boxers and the maximum survival time of 90 days. In conclusion, this study allowed to establish a relationship between the three histological grades observed in 22 cases of meningiomas in dogs with various clinical-epidemiological and pathological parameters, providing useful information for a better understanding of the correlation between the histological grading and the clinical evolution of these neoplasms.

ABSTRACT: In rural settlements there are higher concentrations of reservoirs and vectors of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) due to environmental changes resulting from human action by occupation of the territory, however, there are no surveys in Brazil on epidemiological information of CVL in these areas. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Leishmania sp. in dogs from rural settlements, as well as to identify the risk factors associated with infection. A total of 306 dogs were tested, and the serological diagnosis of CVL was performed by ELISA S7. Of the 306 dogs, 118 presented anti-Leishmania sp. antibodies., resulting in a frequency of 38.6%. The risk factors identified for CVL seropositivity were: age of 12-24 months (OR=2.97), age of 24-48 months (OR=4.83), age of 4-6 years (OR=4.40), age >6 years (OR=3.62), contact with poultry (OR=1.67) and gender (female) (OR=1.97). Dogs from rural settlements in the semiarid of Paraiba showed high anti-Leishmania sp. antibody frequency, what makes the population of those settlements susceptible to infection. This highlights for the need to alert the epidemiological surveillance agencies to stablish prevention and control methods for that zoonosis, including educational and health activities on these settlements, as they are located in areas with favorable characteristics for CVL installation.

The aim of this work was to produce biodegradable films based on the pectin and cocoa puree reinforced with chitosan nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were obtained by the ionotropic gelation. Films were produced according to the "casting" method, through a colloidal solution composed of water, cocoa puree, chitosan nanoparticles solution and different concentrations of pectin (2% and 3% w/w). Films were analyzed by thickness measurements, water vapor permeability, mechanical properties and scanning electron microscopy. Nanoparticles were characterized by zeta potential and showed spherical shape with a diameter of about 110 nm and zeta potential value of approximately +30 mV. Pectin 2% and 3% cocoa films exhibited tensile strength (mPa) of 15.1 ± 0.7 and 22.9 ± 1.6, respectively. After nanostructures addition, values increased to 25.2 ± 0.7 and 29.8 ± 1.3. Increasing concentration polymer and chitosan nanoparticles to improve tensile strength values. Films contained 3% of pectin exhibited more significant decrease in water vapor permeability values when chitosan nanoparticles were added, from 2.470 ± 0.101 to 1.904 ± 0.125 g mm / kPa h m2. Results of the analyzes demonstrated that nanocomposites produced with pectin of different concentration showed satisfactory properties for application as packaging for food.

Abstract: Visceral leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania infantum in Brazil. It is a chronic disease and often a fatal zoonosis and considered as a serious worldwide public health problem and recognized by the World Health Organization as one of seventeen "Neglected Tropical Diseases". This study was conducted in 2012 in the county of Patos, in Paraíba State semiarid region. The main purposes were to estimate the prevalence and the risk factors of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), and to evaluate the performance of serological tests. Serological prevalence was determined using three techniques (ELISA, IFA and DPP chromatographic immunoassay - Dual Path Platform). ELISA was the golden standard, since it is the confirmatory test for CVL as established by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. In total, 362 blood samples were collected and were considered positive if positive by two serological assays. Positive samples were tested by PCR and qPCR. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied to the dog owner to identify risk factors associated with CVL. The seroprevalence was 11.33% (41/362). Chromatographic immunoassay - DPP showed a sensitivity of 58% (95%, CI: 0.43 to 0.72) and specificity of 96% (95%, CI: 0.93-0.98) , with a Kappa index of 0.5. The IFA had a sensitivity of 85% (95%, CI: 0.72 to 0.94), specificity of 99% (95%, CI: 0.98 to 1) and Kappa value of 0.8. The risk factor identified in the multivariate analysis was gender (OR=2.15 [1.09 to 4.21]), male dogs having 2.15 times more chance of being infected. The increased likelihood can possibly be explained by the use of male dogs for hunting and as guard dogs, two factors that increase dog contact to infected sandflies. Due to the prevalence rates, it should be recommended control measures against canine visceral leishmaniasis. The results demonstrated that the Chromatographic immunoassay (DPP-Dual Path Platform) is not the best technique for screening positive animals due to its low sensitivity, suggesting its replacement by ELISA.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
