ABSTRACT Banana (Musa spp.) is a crop with outstanding economic and social expression throughout the world. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different mulches types in growth production and postharvest of banana ‘BRS Platina’ not irrigated. The experiment was conducted in the farm of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). Micropropagated banana plants of the cultivar BRS were planted in the field with a spacing of 2.5 × 3.0 m (1333 plants ·ha-1), without irrigation. About 20 days after planting, different mulches were installed: black polyethylene films, double-sided polyethylene films (white and black), organic mulch (from the own crop) and control (bare soil). The experimental was set up in a randomized block design with four treatments, six blocks and six plants per treatment, totaling 144 plants. Among the six plants used in each treatment, two constituted the border, therefore four plants were evaluated. The analysis performed in the first and second crop were: growth analysis, postharvest quality, production and productivity. Both organic and inorganic (plastic film) mulch provide greater growth and yield of banana ‘BRS Platina’ not irrigated, in two years of production and can be used in the cultivation of this crop.

RESUMO São poucos os registros no Brasil de insetos associados à cultura da fava; entre eles, destaca-se o pulgão preto Aphis craccivora Koch, 1854. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de silício na indução de resistência de plantas de feijão-fava Phaseolus lunatus a esse inseto. O experimento foi conduzido no Laboratório de Entomologia do setor de Fitossanidade do Centro de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI). Os efeitos da aplicação do silício sobre os aspectos biológicos do inseto foram avaliados utilizando os tratamentos: silício aplicado no solo, silício aplicado no solo + folha, silício aplicado à folha; e controle, sem aplicação de silício. Foram avaliadas as variáveis biológicas: duração do período pré-reprodutivo, período reprodutivo e fertilidade, e média diárias de ninfas produzidas por fêmea. Os teores de silício e de lignina nas plantas também foram avaliados. O ácido silícico foi aplicado em uma solução a 1% ao redor do caule das plantas (no solo), 15 dias após a emergência, diluindo-se 2,0 g do produto em 200 mL de água. Já a aplicação foliar foi realizada com um pulverizador de 1 L, 5 dias após a aplicação em solo. A não preferência de A. craccivora em feijão também foi avaliada. As avaliações foram realizadas após 48 e 72 horas da infestação, por meio da contagem de ninfas e adultos em cada secção foliar. A aplicação de silício promove a redução da produção de ninfas, interferindo nos aspectos biológicos de A. craccivora, podendo ser utilizado em programas de manejo de pragas do feijão-fava.

ABSTRACT In Brazil, there are few records of insects associated with the cultivation of lima beans; among them, there is the black aphid Aphis craccivora Koch, 1854. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of silicon application on the resistance induction of lima bean plants, Phaseolus lunatus, to the black aphid A. craccivora. The experiment was conducted in the Entomology Laboratory of the Phytosanitary Sector of Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI), Brazil. The effects of the following treatments on biological aspects of the insect were evaluated: silicon applied to soil; silicon applied to soil + leaf; silicon applied to leaf; and control, without silicon application. The following biological variables were evaluated: generation period, reproductive period, and the fertility and daily average of produced nymphs per female. Plant silicon and lignin content were also evaluated. A 1% solution of silicic acid (2.0 g of product diluted in 200 mL of water) was applied around the plant stem (on soil), 15 days after emergence. Leaf application was performed with a 1-L spray, 5 days after the soil application. The non-preference of A. craccivora on lima beans was also evaluated. The evaluations were performed after 48 and 72 hours of infestation by counting nymphs and adults at each leaf section. Silicon application reduces nymph production, thereby interfering in the biological aspects of A. craccivora. Therefore, it can be used in cowpea pest management programs.

ABSTRACT. As the fourth largest importer of olive oil and the fifth largest importer of olives, Brazil is one of the largest importers of olive (Olea europaea L.) products in the world. In recent decades, the introduction and growth of olive cultivars with lower chilling requirements in the south and southeast regions of Brazil have made olive production viable in the country. However, there is a dearth of information about the management of olive crops in Brazil, especially in relation to studies about the nutritional needs of olive trees grown in subtropical regions, which may enable advances in the productivity of this fruit. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth, dry matter production and nutritional status of the olive tree under the effect of nutrient omissions, as well as to establish visual diagnostic parameters of nutrient deficiencies. We used a completely randomized design with ten treatments and three replicates grown in the Hoagland-Arnon nutrient solution and solutions with individual omissions of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Fe, and Zn. The treatments that most limited the growth of olive trees were the N, Ca, and B omission treatments.

Abstract The jelly palm plant [Butia capitata (Martius) Beccari] is a native palm of the Cerrado biome used for many purposes in northern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Dormancy is common in palm seeds, resulting in slow and uneven germination that may take years to complete. Modification in the growth pattern, anatomical parameters, physiological and biochemical characteristics of the plant can be verified due to changes in the light spectrum transmitted through colored shade nets used. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of colored shade nets on the leaf and root anatomy of the jelly palm plant. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments, ten replicates and eight plants per replicate, totaling 400 plants. Four colored photo-converter nets with 50% shading and different radiation proportions were employed: white (985 μmol.m-2.s-1), red (327 μmol.m-2.s-1), black (433 μmol.m-2.s-1) and silver (405 μmol.m-2.s-1). The plants cultivated under direct sunlight (1000 μmol.m-2.s-1) were considered as the control group. Leaf and root anatomical analysis was performed on 10 plants per treatment. It is possible to conclude that the colored shade nets caused changes in leaf and root anatomy of the jelly palm plant (Butia capitata).

RESUMO: Com o objetivo de aumentar a disponibilidade para os consumidores, agregar ainda mais valor aos pêssegos (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) e identificar quais cultivares cultivadas em regiões tropicais são mais adequadas para o processamento de geleia, o objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar e avaliar a influência de diferentes cultivares de pessegueiro (‘Aurora’, ‘Biuti’, ‘Bonão’, ‘Centenário’, ‘Diamante’, ‘Douradão’, ‘Libra’, ‘Régis’ e ‘Tropical’) cultivadas em regiões tropicais nas características físico-químicas, reológicas e sensoriais da geleia resultante. Verificou-se que as cultivares avaliadas apresentaram grande variabilidade entre si em relação às características físicas e físico-químicas. As geleias elaboradas a partir destas cultivares, embora apresentam grande variabilidade em relação aos parâmetros físico-químicos e reológicos, apresentaram alta aceitação. Conclui-se, que todas as cultivares estudadas são indicadas para processamento e podem ser destinadas à industrialização.

ABSTRACT: In order to increase the availability to consumers and add even more value to peaches (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) and to identify which cultivars grown in tropical regions are more suitable for jelly processing, the objective of this study was to characterize and evaluate the influence of different peach cultivars (‘Aurora’, ‘Biuti’, ‘Bonão’, ‘Centenário’, ‘Diamante’, ‘Douradão’, ‘Libra’, ‘Régis’ and ‘Tropical’) cultivated in tropical regions on the physicochemical characteristics, rheological properties and sensory acceptance of the resulting jelly. The evaluated cultivars presented great variability among themselves in relation to the physical and physicochemical characteristics. The jellies elaborated from these cultivars; although, presenting great variability in relation to the physicochemical and rheological parameters, presented similar, high acceptance. All cultivars studied are suitable for processing and can be used for industrialization.

RESUMO: Visando a seleção de porta-enxertos para a produção de mudas, o objetivo do trabalho foi quantificar a propagação seminífera em castanhas com ou sem a realização de incisões. Foram utilizadas nove cultivares (‘Ibuki’, ‘Isumo’, ‘Kinshu’, ‘Moriwase’, ‘Okuni’, ‘Senri’, ‘Taishowase’, ‘Tamatsukuri’ e ‘Tiodowase’) e duas seleções (‘KM-1’ e ‘KM-2’) de castanheira híbridas (Castanea crenata x Castanea sp.). Em metade das castanhas, realizou-se uma incisão e a outra metade das castanhas permaneceu intacta. Foram quantificadas a porcentagem de germinação, emergência e o comprimento das raízes. As castanhas germinadas foram transplantadas onde se quantificou o diâmetro e a altura das mudas e ao final, a massa seca da parte aérea. Em seguida foram enxertadas pelo método de garfagem as seleções de castanheira ‘KM-2’ e ‘Jacutinga’, se quantificando a porcentagem de brotação, além do diâmetro e altura dos enxertos. Concluiu-se que as incisões aumentam a germinação e a emergência das plântulas, na maioria das cultivares e seleções. ‘Taishowase’ e ‘Tamatsukuri’ se destacam em relação as demais quanto a germinação e crescimento dos porta-enxertos.

ABSTRACT: Aiming the selection of rootstocks to produce seedlings, the objective of this study was to quantify the seminiferous propagation in chestnut seeds, with or without incisions. Nine cultivars were used (‘Ibuki’, ‘Isumo’, ‘Kinshu’, ‘Moriwase’, ‘Okuni’, ‘Senri’, ‘Taishowase’, ‘Tamatsukuri’ and ‘Tiodowase’) and two selections (‘KM-1’ and ‘KM-2’) of hybrid chestnut trees (Castanea crenata x Castanea sp.). An incision was held in half of chestnuts and the other half remained intact. Percentage of germination, emergence and root length were quantified. The germinated nuts were transplanted and were quantified the diameter and height of seedlings. Then, the chestnut selections ‘KM-2’ and ‘Jacutinga’ were grafted by the cleft grafting method, and were quantified the percentage of sprouting, besides the diameter and height of grafts. Incisions increase the germination and seedling emergence in most cultivars and selections. ‘Taishowase’ and ‘Tamatsukuri’ stood out over the others to germination, growth of the rootstocks.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento dos enxertos e a caracterização anatômica de cultivares de pereira e marmeleiro enxertadas nos porta-enxertos Pyrus calleryana e Chaenomeles sinensis. Foram feitas avaliações quanto às percentagens dos enxertos brotados aos 60 dias e quanto ao comprimento e o diâmetro da brotação dos enxertos aos 120 dias. Cortaram-se porções caulinares da região da enxertia, em seções transversais e longitudinais, e o xilema secundário foi separado para comparação dos tecidos. As pereiras apresentaram bom desenvolvimento sobre o porta-enxerto P.calleryana, e os cortes anatômicos apresentaram tecidos vasculares conectados, o que não ocorreu quando as pereiras foram enxertadas em C.sinensis, em que os enxertos brotaram mas não se desenvolveram, e os tecidos vasculares não se conectaram. Os marmeleiros apresentaram bom desenvolvimento em ambos os porta-enxertos, em razão da boa conexão dos tecidos vasculares. A conexão dos tecidos vasculares é fundamental para o sucesso da enxertia. As espécies utilizadas não diferiram significativamente quanto a seus tecidos do xilema secundário. A incompatibilidade encontrada entre as pereiras e o porta-enxerto C. sinensis não é anatômica.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the graft growth and the anatomical characterization of pear (Pyrus communis x P. pyrifolia) and quince (Cydonia oblonga) cultivars grafted on Pyrus calleryana and Chaenomeles sinensis rootstocks. Sprouted graft percentages at 60 days and the length and diameter of the graft sproutings at 120 days were evaluated. Stem cuttings from the grafting region were performed in transversal and longitudinal sections, and the secondary xylem was separated for tissue comparison. The pear trees showed good development on P.calleryana rootstock, and the anatomical sections showed that the vascular tissues were connected, which did not occur when the trees were grafted on C.sinensis, in which the grafts sprouted, but did not develop, and the vascular tissues did not connect. The quince trees showed good development on both rootstocks due to the good connection of the vascular tissues. The connection of vascular tissues is essential for the success of grafting. The evaluated species did not differ significantly as to their secondary xylem tissues. The incompatibility found between the pear trees and the C.sinensis rootstocks is not anatomical.

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of touristic package advertise price presentation, moderated by behavioral and demographics characteristics, on the price perception, word of mouth, in consumer buying intention. Na experimental in-between groups design was adopted. The price format was manipulated as: price control, price comparison, price installments, dollar price and discounted price in percentage. Each respondent was presented to only one manipulated condition. Results shown that the advertising with the price of the package in comparative format 'of R $ 2,285.00 for only R $ 1,599.00' increased by 27.1% the purchase intention and, 27.7% of word of mouth when compared to the control price. On the other hand, it was the price presented in dollar that generated greater awareness of “cheap price”. This research contributes theoretically to the advancement of the knowledge when it supports that distinct ways of price presentation influences consumers’ intentions to buy, and it also demonstrates that even though comparative price generates greater buying intention, word of mouth, and lower perception of high price, as founded on the reviewed literature, this price format may not be relevant to certain profiles of tourism product consumers.

El objetivo de este estudio fue verificar el efecto de la presentación del precio en los paquetes turísticos, moderados por características de comportamiento y demográficas, sobre la percepción del precio, el boca a boca y la intención de compra del consumidor de turismo. La investigación adoptó un diseño experimental con manipulación entre grupos. Los formatos de precios fueron: precio control, precio comparativo, precio en cuotas, precio en dólares y precio con descuento, y a cada participante se le presentó sólo una condición manipulada. Los resultados muestran que el anuncio publicitario con el precio del paquete turístico en el formato comparativo de R$ 2.285,00 por sólo R$ 1.599,00’ aumentó un 27,1% la intención de compra y un 27,7% la generación del boca a boca al ser comparado con el precio de control. Por otro lado, el precio en dólares generó una mayor percepción de precio barato. El estudio contribuye teóricamente a dar soporte a la hipótesis de que las distintas formas de presentar el precio influyen en la intención de los consumidores, además de demonstrar que aunque el precio comparativo genere mayor intención, mayor boca a boca y menor percepción de precio caro, como se vio en la literatura, este formato puede no ser tan relevante para determinados perfiles de consumidores de servicios turísticos.

RESUMO: O caquizeiro é propagado por enxertia e os porta-enxertos são produzidos por sementes. A enxertia é realizada em julho, que coincide com a época de poda dos caquizeiros. Porém, nessa época, muitos porta-enxertos ainda não estão aptos a receberem os enxertos. Nesse sentido, o armazenamento dos ramos porta-borbulhas/garfos seria uma opção. Assim, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo de verificar a viabilidade do armazenamento refrigerado dos ramos porta-borbulhas/garfos e diagnosticar o método de enxertia para promover melhor desenvolvimento do enxerto. A semeadura dos porta-enxertos foi realizada em agosto de 2012 e os ramos foram coletados em julho de 2013. Uma parte dos ramos foi utilizada para a realização da enxertia (métodos de borbulhia e garfagem) em porta-enxertos de um ano de idade e a outra parte foi armazenada sob baixa temperatura (estacas envoltas em papel umedecido, embrulhadas em sacos de polietileno colocadas em câmara fria a 4°C), pelos meses de agosto a dezembro. A cada 30 dias, uma quantidade de ramos foi removida da câmara fria para a realização das enxertias por borbulhia e garfagem e para a quantificação dos açúcares totais e amido dos ramos porta-borbulhas/garfos armazenados. Passados 120 dias da realização das enxertias, foram mensurados o comprimento e diâmetro do broto, número de folhas, porcentagem de brotação, massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes dos enxertos. Conclui-se que não há diferença na brotação dos enxertos para as diferentes épocas, porém, em mudas enxertadas pelo método de garfagem, há maior crescimento quando os garfos são armazenados a frio durante 60 a 120 dias.

ABSTRACT: The persimmon tree is propagated by grafting and the rootstocks are produced from seeds. Grafting is done in July, which coincides with the time when the persimmon trees are pruned. But, at this time, many rootstocks are not yet eligible to receive the grafts. In this case budsticks/cleft storage is an option. Thus, this study aimed to verify the feasibility of cold storage of budsticks/cleft and verify the grafting method to promote better graft development. Rootstock was sown in August 2012 and the branches were collected in July 2013. Part of the branches was used for grafting (budding and cleft graft methods) in one-year old rootstocks and the other part was stored at low temperature (cuttings wrapped in moistened paper and then wrapped in polyethylene bags placed in cold storage at 4°C), during the months of August to December. Every 30 days, a number of branches was removed from the cold storage to perform grafting by budding and cleft and to quantify total sugars and starch in the budsticks/cleft stored. One hundred and twenty days after the grafting was performed, the length and diameter of the bud, number of leaves, sprouting percentage, dry weight of aerial part and root from the grafts were measured. It was concluded that there is no difference in the budding graft for different periods, but in seedlings grafted by the cleft grafting method there is greater growth when the clefts have been in cold storage for 60 to 120 days.

The performance of Syrah grapevine under protected cultivation with different plastic films was evaluated during 2012 and 2013 seasons in South of Minas Gerais State. Agronomical and physiological measurements were done on eight years old grapevines, grafted onto ‘1103 Paulsen’ rootstock cultivated under uncovered conditions, covered with transparent and with diffuse plastic films. Both plastic covers induced the highest shoot growth rate and specific leaf area. The diffuse plastic induced greater differences on leaf area, pruning weight and leaf chlorophyll content as compared to uncovered vines. Grapevines under diffuse plastic also had the lowest rates of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration. Leaf starch, glucose and fructose contents were not affected by treatment, but leaf sucrose was reduced by transparent plastic. The leaf and stem water potential were higher under diffuse plastic. In 2013, grapevines under diffuse plastic showed the highest yields mainly due to decreased rot incidence and increased cluster weight. Furthermore, berries under diffuse plastic showed the highest anthocyanins concentration. The use of diffuse plastic induces more agronomical benefits to produce Syrah grape under protected cultivation.

OBJETIVOS: aferir a avaliabilidade do programa + Vida: política de redução de danos em álcool, fumo e outras drogas do município de Recife. MÉTODOS: foram analisados documentos oficiais da gestão, visando à apreensão dos pressupostos do programa, do problema que pretendia ser resolvido, da coerência entre o problema e os objetivos do programa, bem como de aspectos do programa a serem avaliados. Foram realizadas entrevistas com informantes-chave para conhecer o programa na prática dos atores envolvidos. RESULTADOS: o programa foi descrito e sua operacionalização sistematizada no modelo lógico, que foi submetido a um comitê de especialistas para apreciação da coerência interna e obtenção de consenso dos interessados na avaliação do programa. A partir do modelo lógico foi construída uma matriz de medidas com critérios/indicadores. CONCLUSÕES: esse processo possibilitou o julgamento a respeito das condições do programa a ser avaliado.

OBJECTIVES: to measure the evaluability of the + Life Program: a policy of reducing the harm caused by alcohol, smoking and other drugs, in the municipality of Recife, Brazil. METHODS: official management documents were examined with a view to understanding the presuppositions underlying the program, the problem it intended to solve, the coherence of the link between the problem and the program objectives, and the aspects of the program to be evaluated. Interviews were conducted with key-informants as a way of finding out about the way the program is put into practice by those involved in it. RESULTS: the program was described and its operationalization systematized according to a logical framework, which was submitted to a committee of specialists to analyze its internal consistency and obtain the consensus of those with a stake in evaluation of the program. The logical framework was used to build up a set of measures with criteria/indicators. CONCLUSIONS: this process made it possible to make judgments with regard to the conditions of the program under evaluation.

Although hepatitis C is mainly hepatotropic, some studies suggest that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), using them as a reservoir, which might contribute to the development of resistance to treatment. Fifty-four hepatitis-C patients, who had been submitted to treatment, were selected. Blood samples were collected on the same day for the detection of HCV RNA in serum and PBMC by PCR, using the Amplicor HCV 2.0 assay (Roche Diagnostics). HCV genotyping was performed using the INNO-LiPA HCV kit (Versant, Bayer Diagnostics). HCV RNA was detected in both serum and PBMC in 35 (64%) patients and no RNA in 16 (29.6%). Disagreement between the serum and PBMC results was observed for three patients (5.6%), with HCV RNA being detected in PBMC but not in serum. Four months later, new serum and PBMC samples were collected from one of these patients and HCV RNA was detected in both samples, showing that PBMC can reveal signs of a lack of response to treatment. We conclude that the absence of HCV in the serum of patients with chronic hepatitis C by the end of treatment does not mean that there is no circulating virus. HCV in mononuclear cells may be an indicator of the persisting infection.

O tratamento de primeira escolha para leishmaniose tegumentar americana é o antimonial pentavalente. Embora este tratamento seja na maioria das vezes efetivo e indicado, devem ser consideradas as desvantagens tais como efeitos colaterais, longa duração do tratamento e contra-indicação para cardiopatas, nefropatas, idosos, grávidas e outras condições. Com o advento da vacina antileishmaniose tegumentar americana para fins profiláticos e terapêuticos, associando-a ou não a outros fármacos, muitas pesquisas têm sido desenvolvidas, sendo a vacina a principal entre os atuais recursos no tratamento e prevenção da leishmaniose tegumentar americana. Em conclusão, a associação do antimônio com a vacina (imunoquimioterapia) apresentou o mesmo índice de cura em relação ao tratamento padrão (100%), e ainda reduziu o volume do sal em 17,9% e o tempo de cura significativamente, de 87 para 62 dias; conseqüentemente, reduzindo os efeitos colaterais.

The first choice of treatment for American cutaneous leishmaniasis is the pentavalent antimonial drug. Although it has been shown that this treatment is mostly effective and indicated, some disadvantages should be taken into account such as side effects, long term treatment inconveniences and counter-indication for patients suffering from cardiopathy, nephropathy; yet, aging, pregnancy and other conditions. With the advent of the vaccine anti-American cutaneous leishmaniasis as a prophylactic measure, studies on therapy using the vaccine associated or not with other drugs have been performed by many investigators and it is currently among the alternative treatments and prevention measures for American cutaneous leishmaniasis. In conclusion, the association between antimony and vaccine (immunochemotherapy) showed the same cure rate when compared with the standard treatment (100%) and it was also able to reduce the salt volume in 17.9% and treatment length from 87 to 62 days, decreasing side effects.

Proteínas imunogênicas da vacina polivalente de promastigotas mortas de leishmanias (Leishvacin®) produzida pela Biobrás Bioquímica do Brasil, Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brasil foram identificadas e purificadas por eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida e eletroeluição. Camundongos C57BL/10 foram vacinados com proteínas de pesos moleculares estimados em 42, 46, 63, 66, 73, 87, 97 e 160kDa em três doses de 30µg de cada proteína combinada com 250µg de Corynebacteriumparvum em intervalos de 15 dias e desafiados com uma infecção desafio de 10(5) promastigotas infectantes de Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis na base da cauda. Foram avaliadas a habilidade dessas proteínas em induzir resposta imune e proteção dos animais vacinados após a infecção desafio. Nenhuma diferença estatística foi observada nos níveis de IFN-g nos grupos vacinados em comparação ao grupo controle. Proteção de 28,57; 42,86; 57,14; 42,86; 42,86, 57,14; 42,86; 57,14% foi demonstrado para cada proteína.

Immunogenic proteins from nonliving promastigote polyvalent Leishmania vaccine against American tegumentary leishmaniasis (Leishvacin®), produced by Biobrás (Biochemistry of Brazil ), Montes Claros, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were identified and purified by polyacrylamide electrophoresis gel and electroelution. C57BL/10 mice were vaccinated with proteins with estimated molecular weights of 42, 46, 63, 66, 73, 87, 97, and 160kDa in three doses of 30µg of each protein at 15-day intervals combined with 250µg of Corynebacterium parvum followed by a challenge infection with 10(5) infective promastigotes from Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. The ability of these proteins to induce immune response and protection was analyzed. No statistical difference was observed in the level of IFN-g induced by proteins in vaccinated groups in comparison with control groups. Six months after challenge infection, protection levels of 28.57; 42.86; 57.14; 42.86; 42.86, 57.14; 42.86 and 57.14% were demonstrated for each purified protein.
