Abstract The present study sought to evaluate the antibacterial activity of trans-anethole against food-borne strains of Enterobacter cloacae and Enterococcus faecalis. The study was performed using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) methods, in addition, disc diffusion technique was used to evaluate the association of trans-anethole with synthetic antimicrobials. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration for Adherence (MICA) testing was also performed. The results revealed that trans-anethole presents no antibacterial activity at any of the concentrations used against the E. cloacae strains tested. However, trans-anethole presented antibacterial effect against five of the six E. faecalis bacterial strains tested, with MIC values ranging from 500 μg/mL to 1000 μg/mL. Further, when analyzing the MBC results against E. faecalis, it was observed that the compound presented values ranging from 500 μg/mL to 1000 μg/mL. As for the associations, it was observed that trans-anethole when combined with the antimicrobials ampicillin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone presented synergistic effect against most strains of E. faecalis. However, both trans-anethole and the control chlorhexidine (0.12%) presented no antibiofilm effects against strains of E. faecalis. In short, trans-anethole presented potential antibacterial against E. faecalis strains of food origin, and may upon further study, it may be used alone or in association with synthetic antimicrobials to combat infections caused by this bacterium.

Resumo O presente estudo procurou avaliar a atividade antibacteriana do trans-anetol contra cepas de Enterobacter cloacae e Enterococcus faecalis de origem alimentar. O estudo foi realizado utilizando métodos de Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM), e Concentração Bactericida Mínima (CBM), além disso, foi utilizada a técnica de difusão de disco para avaliar a associação do trans-anetol com antimicrobianos. O teste de Concentração Inibitória Mínima de Aderência (CIMA) também foi realizado. Os resultados revelaram que o trans-anetol não apresentou atividade antibacteriana em nenhuma das concentrações utilizadas contra as cepas de E. cloacae testadas. No entanto, o trans-anetol apresentou efeito antibacteriano contra cinco das seis cepas bacterianas de E. faecalis testadas, com valores de CIM variando de 500 μg/mL a 1000 μg/mL. Além disso, ao analisar os resultados da CBM contra E. faecalis, observa-se que o composto apresentou valores variando de 500 μg/mL a 1000 μg/mL. Quanto às associações, observou-se que o trans-anetol quando combinado com os antimicrobianos ampicilina, gentamicina, ciprofloxacino, e ceftriaxona apresentou efeito sinérgico contra a maioria das cepas de E. faecalis. No entanto, tanto o trans-anetol quanto o controle clorexidina (0,12%) não apresentaram efeito antibiofilme contra a cepa de E. faecalis. Em suma, o trans-anetol apresentou potencial antibacteriano contra cepas de E. faecalis de origem alimentar, podendo, mediante estudos mais aprofundados, ser utilizado isoladamente ou em associação com antimicrobianos sintéticos para combater infecções causadas por esta bactéria.

Abstract Bacteria may be the initial cause of certain pathologies as well as a secondary agent responsible for the development of complications such as pressure ulcer infections. Pressure ulcers are a persistent health problem, especially in immunocompromised patients, and associated with infection by opportunistic microorganisms with antimicrobial resistance, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, highlight the need for the development of new antimicrobial approaches. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-adherent activity of Origanum vulgare L. (oregano) essential oil against Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, as well as the effect of its association with synthetic antimicrobials. To this end, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) analyses were performed on microdilution plates. The assay of the Minimum Inhibitory Adherence Concentration (MIAC), with test tubes. As well as, the association study through the infusion disc method containing ampicillin (AMP), gentamicin (GEN), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ceftriaxone (CEF). Therefore, it was possible to obtain that the essential oil of oregano presents antimicrobial and bactericidal activity, with MIC ranging between 128μg/mL and 256 μg/mL and MBC between 256 μg/mL and 512 μg/mL, on the tested K. pneumoniae strains. When used in association with ampicillin and gentamicin, oregano essential oil showed synergistic effect for some strains. Therefore, it is observed that the tested essential oil can act as a promising antibacterial in the treatment of diseases caused by K. pneumoniae.

Resumo As bactérias podem ser a causa inicial de determinadas patologias como também um agente secundário responsável pelo desenvolvimento de complicações como as infecções das lesões por pressão. As lesões por pressão configuram um problema de saúde persistente, principalmente em pacientes imunocomprometidos, e associadas a infecção por microrganismos oportunistas com resistência antimicrobiana, como por exemplo a Klebisiella pneumoniae, ressaltam a necessidade do desenvolvimento de novas abordagens antimicrobianas. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade antibacteriana e antiaderente do óleo essencial de Origanum vulgareL. (orégano) contra cepas da Klebisiella pneumoniae, bem como o efeito da sua associação com antimicrobianos sintéticos. Para isso foram realizadas as análises da Concentração Mínima Inibitória (CIM) e Concentração Bactericida Mínima (CBM) em placas de micro diluição. O ensaio da Concentração Mínima de Aderência (CIMA), com tubos de ensaio. Como também, o estudo de associação através do método de disco de infusão contendo ampicilina, gentamicina, ciprofloxacino e ceftriaxona. Assim sendo, foi possível obter que o óleo essencial de orégano apresenta atividade antimicrobiana e bactericida, com CIM variando entre 128μg/mL e 256 μg/mL e CBM entre 256 μg/mL e 512 μg/mL, sobre as cepas de K. pneumoniae testadas. Quando utilizado em associação com a ampicilina e gentamicina, o óleo essencial de orégano demonstrou efeito sinérgico para algumas cepas. Portanto, observa-se que o óleo essencial testado pode atuar como um promissor antibacteriano no tratamento de doenças causadas por K. pneumoniae.

Multiple environmental problems are caused by the accumulation of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in river water on its way to the ocean. The objective of this work was to determine the N and P loads in 12 hydrographic basins that flow into estuaries along the northeastern coast of Brazil using established methods. Additionally, natural and anthropogenic loads trends in the hydrographic basins of 12 tropical rivers in northeastern Brazil over 27 years (1990-2016) were evaluated. The results indicated an annual average increase of +1.1% in population density, while precipitation showed no significant trend. The anthropogenic loads were 21 and 112 times higher than natural inputs for N and P, respectively. Anthropogenic sources accounted for ~ 96% of all contributions. The positive trends of these loads (mainly wastewater) represented an annual average increase of 1.1% for N and 1.2% for P, for all river basins included in this study. These percentages represent average annual loads of 251 t N yr-1 and 54.8 t P yr-1. The time series of N and P in the study region showed trends that point to a constant increase, implying a greater contribution of these loads to the adjacent coastal region year after year.

Abstract In the cropping systems that integrate the corn crop, the insertion of Crotalaria ochroleuca G. Don is predominantly intercropped. In this context, there is a need to observe herbicides that present selectivity for this sunn hemp species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of pre and post-emergent herbicides on C. ochroleuca. Two field experiments were conducted in randomized blocks with four replications, involving the pre-emergence and post-emergence application of different herbicide treatments. For the pre-emergent ones, amicarbazone, atrazine and flumioxazin provided phytotoxicity higher than 90% and, consequently, low plant biomass. On the other hand, acetochlor and s-metolachlor did not cause phytotoxicity and did not affect the dry mass of crotalaria. In post-emergence, atrazine + mesotrione showed phytotoxicity >95%, followed by nicosulfuron and 2.4-D with phytotoxicity between 50-60%, whereas tembotrione did not cause injury to the plants. Thus, it was found that among the pre-emergent, acetochlor and s-metolachlor were selective, and for the emerging powders, only tembotrione was the most selective for all parameters analyzed.

Resumo Nos sistemas de cultivo que integram a cultura do milho, a inserção de Crotalaria ochroleuca G. Don é predominantemente consorciada. Nesse contexto, há a necessidade de se observar herbicidas que apresentem seletividade para esta espécie de crotalária. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a seletividade de herbicidas pré e pós-emergentes sobre C. ochroleuca. Dois experimentos de campo foram conduzidos em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, envolvendo a aplicação de diferentes tratamentos herbicidas em pré-emergência e pós-emergência. Para os pré-emergentes, amicarbazone, atrazina e flumioxazin proporcionaram fitotoxicidade superior a 90% e, consequentemente, baixa biomassa vegetal. Por outro lado, o acetocloro e o s-metolacloro não causaram fitotoxicidade e não afetaram a massa seca da crotalária. Em pós-emergência, atrazina + mesotrione apresentou fitotoxicidade >95%, seguido de nicosulfuron e 2,4-D com fitotoxicidade entre 50-60%, enquanto o tembrotrione não causou danos às plantas. Assim, verificou-se que entre os pré-emergentes, o acetocloro e o s-metolacloro foram seletivos, e para os pós emergentes, apenas o tembotrione foi o mais seletivo para todos os parâmetros analisados.

RESUMO A salinidade da água de irrigação ou do solo são fatores abióticos que mais impacta negativamente na produtividade das culturas, entre elas, o milho verde, sendo necessário encontrar alternativas para garantir a produção. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar as trocas gasosas, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o crescimento do milho sob salinidade da água de irrigação e aplicação de peróxido de hidrogênio. O experimento foi conduzido no Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar, Pombal, PB, pertencente à Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, no período de janeiro a fevereiro de 2015, utilizando-se do híbrido de milho ‘AG 1051’. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,3 e 2,0 dS m-1) e cinco concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 40, 80, 160 e 320 µmol L-1) aplicadas via água de irrigação. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 2 × 5, com quatro repetições. A CEa de 2,0 dS m-1 reduz a transpiração, condutância estomática, clorofila total, carotenóides e crescimento inicial, mas não afeta o acúmulo de massa seca das plantas de milho. A aplicação de H2O2 via solo variando de 0 a 320 µmol L-1 promoveu redução na taxa de assimilação de CO2 e transpiração, bem como em concentrações de 0 a 160 µmol L-1 para condutância estomática de plantas irrigadas com CEa de 2,0 dS m-1. Aplicação de H2O2 via solo até a concentração de 320 µmol L-1 aumentou a altura de plantas, porém reduziu o diâmetro do colmo de milho.

ABSTRACT The salinity of irrigation water or soil is the abiotic factor that most negatively impacts the yield of crops, including green maize, so it is necessary to find alternatives to ensure production. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of maize under salinity of irrigation water and application of hydrogen peroxide. The experiment was conducted at the Center of Sciences and Agrifood Technology, Pombal, PB, belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the period from January to February 2015, using the maize hybrid ‘AG 1051’. The treatments consisted of two salinity levels of irrigation water (0.3 and 2.0 dS m-1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 40, 80, 160, and 320 µmol L-1) applied via irrigation water. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. ECw of 2.0 dS m-1 reduces transpiration, stomatal conductance, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and initial growth, but does not affect the dry mass accumulation of maize plants. Application of H2O2 via soil varying from 0 to 320 µmol L-1 causes reductions in the CO2 assimilation rate and transpiration, as well as at concentrations from 0 to 160 µmol L-1 for stomatal conductance of plants irrigated with ECw of 2.0 dS m-1. Application of H2O2 via soil up to a concentration of 320 µmol L-1 increases the plant height, but reduces culm diameter of maize.

RESUMO A análise da fluorescência da clorofila é uma das muitas formas de quantificar o dano salino no desempenho fotossintético e na produção agrícola. Assim, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência fotoquímica e a produção do coentro, cultivar Verdão em função dos níveis de condutividades elétricas da solução nutritiva e da natureza catiônica. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4 × 3, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram na exposição das plantas a quatro condutividades elétricas das soluções nutritivas (CEsn = 1,6; 3,2; 4,8 e 6,4 dS m-1) e três tipos de águas de diferentes naturezas catiônicas (Na+; Ca2+; Mg2+), preparadas com a solubilização de diferentes sais - NaCl, CaCl2.2H2O e MgCl2.6H2O em água de abastecimento da UFRPE (CEa = 0,12 dS m-1). O estudo foi realizado em casa de vegetação entre novembro e dezembro de 2019 no Laboratório de Fertirrigação e Salinidade do Departamento de Engenharia Agronômica da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. O aumento da condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva afetou os centros de reação, a atividade fotoquímica, a eficiência da carboxilação e resultou na redução da condutância estomática, da taxa de assimilação de CO2 e, portanto, na produção de biomassa do coentro. Diferentes prevalências catiônicas na água proporcionam diferenças na intensidade do dano salino, sobretudo com o aumento da concentração.

ABSTRACT The analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence is one of many ways to quantify the salt damage to photosynthetic performance and crop production. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the photochemical efficiency and production of coriander, cultivar ‘Verdão’, as a function of the electrical conductivity levels of the nutrient solution and the cationic nature. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of four electrical conductivities of the nutrient solutions (ECns = 1.6, 3.2, 4.8, and 6.4 dS m-1) and three kinds of water of different cationic natures (Na+; Ca2+; Mg2+), which were prepared with the dissolution of different salts - NaCl, CaCl2.2H2O, and MgCl2.6H2O in supply water (ECw = 0.12 dS m-1), that is, three predominant cationic natures. The study was carried out in a greenhouse between November and December 2019 at the Fertigation and Salinity Laboratory of the Agricultural Engineering Department of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. It was found that the increase in the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution affected reaction centers, photochemical activity, and carboxylation efficiency and resulted in reductions in stomatal conductance, CO2 assimilation rate, and therefore, in the biomass production of coriander. Different cationic prevalence in water causes differences in the intensity of salt damage, especially with increasing concentration.

Abstract Background: There are only a few reports of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in patients with SARS-CoV-2 in pediatrics. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of critically ill pediatric patients with COVID-19, the frequency of ARDS, ventilatory mechanics and results of prone position. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study of patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) between April 1 to September 30, 2020. Results: Thirty-four patients were admitted to pediatric intensive care unit, 31.7% were SARS-CoV-2 positive. 13 presented ARDS, 11 required invasive mechanical ventilation, and seven were pronated as an oxygenation strategy. All patients classified as severe ARDS were pronated. Obesity was the most important comorbidity. The complications associated with ARDS were multisystemic inflammatory syndrome (8 vs. 4; p < 0.05) and acute kidney injury (8 vs. 3; p < 0.05). Procalcitonin was higher in patients with ARDS, as were the days of stay in PICU (p < 0.05). The success of the pronation maneuver was achieved 8 hours later , with the following results: arterial oxygen partial pressure to fractional inspired oxygen ratio 128 vs. 204, oxygenation index 8.9 vs. 5.9, static lung compliance 0.54 vs. 0.70 ml/cmH2O/kg, plateau pressure 24 vs. 19 cmH2O (p < 0.05). The use of narcotics was higher in the group with ARDS plus pronation 124 vs. 27 hours in the non-pronated (p < 0.01). Mortality associated with SARS-CoV-2 was 5.8%. Conclusions: ARDS was presented in 38.2% of the children admitted to PICU and was more frequent in obese patients. Pronation, performed in severe cases, improved oxygenation and lung mechanics indexes. No patient died of ARDS.

Resumen Introducción: Existen pocos reportes de síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda (SDRA) con COVID-19 en pacientes pediátricos. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir las características de los pacientes pediátricos críticamente enfermos con COVID-19, la frecuencia del SDRA, la mecánica ventilatoria y los resultados de la posición prona. Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio retrospectivo y observacional de los pacientes ingresados del 1 de abril al 30 de septiembre de 2020. Resultados: Ingresaron 34 pacientes a la unidad de terapia intensiva pediátrica (UTIP) con prueba positiva para SARS-CoV-2. De ellos, 13 presentaron SDRA, 11 requirieron ventilación mecánica invasiva y siete fueron pronados como estrategia de oxigenación. Todos los pacientes clasificados como SDRA graves fueron pronados. La obesidad fue la comorbilidad más importante. Las complicaciones asociadas con SDRA fueron el síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico (p < 0.05) y la lesión renal aguda (p < 0.05). La procalcitonina fue mayor en los pacientes con SDRA, al igual que los días de estancia en la UTIP (p < 0.05). El éxito de la maniobra de pronación se alcanzó 8 horas después.Los resultados observados fueron los siguientes relación presión arterial de oxígeno/fracción inspirada de oxígeno 128 vs. 204, índice de oxigenación 8.9 vs. 5.9, distensibilidad pulmonar estática 0.54 vs. 0.70 ml/cmH2O/kg, y presión meseta 24 vs. 19 cmH2O (p < 0.05). El uso de narcóticos fue mayor en el grupo de SDRA más pronación que en los no pronados (124 vs. 27 h; p < 0.01). La mortalidad asociada con SARS-CoV-2 fue del 5.8%. Conclusiones: El SDRA se presentó en el 38.2% de los niños admitidos a UTIP, y con mayor frecuencia en los pacientes con obesidad. La maniobra de pronación aplicada en los casos severos, mejoró la oxigenación de la mécanica pulmonar. Ninguno de los pacientes falleció por SDRA.

Abstract Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.65) nanoferrite particles were used as filler in a silicone polymer matrix in order to obtain a composite material with the purpose of absorbing electromagnetic radiation. The composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and force modulation microscopy (FMM) and the electromagnetic properties by means of network and impedance analyzers. It was observed that the composite with higher concentrations of Znx (x = 0.5 and 0.65) presented the lowest dispersion, due to the size of the zinc particles. This paper provides a framework for the practical application of absorbent composite materials of MnZn nanoferrite particles combined with silicone rubber to be used in 1-10 GHz frequency bands, with reflectivity values of -24 dB in the 6 GHz frequency range.

Resumo Informações quanto à diversidade genética de espécies nativas visando identificar melhores progênies viáveis para conservação in situ e ex situ, além de futuros programas de melhoramento florestal são incipientes. Objetivamos conhecer a diversidade genética de 64 progênies de Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub. (Fabaceae). Determinamos os caracteres dendrométricos dessa espécie, e ao utilizarmos técnicas multivariadas e análises de agrupamento verificamos as diferenças entre as progênies e grupos de menor heterogeneidade. O teste de progênies e procedências foi instalado em Dourados (MS), cujas sementes foram coletadas em três regiões de MS (Vale do Ivinhema, Serra de Maracaju e Serra da Bodoquena) e na microrregião de Lavras-MG. O experimento foi conduzido em alfa-látice 8 x 8, com quatro repetições. Constatamos variabilidade genética entre e dentro das populações de P. dubium para todos os caracteres altura, diâmetro, circunferência à altura do peito, volume e área basal. Sugerimos que as populações de P. dubium tem alta variabilidade genética, o que indicou possibilidade de melhoramento genético pela seleção das melhores progênies. Os métodos UPGMA e Tocher agruparam as progênies em três e nove grupos, respectivamente, em que os indivíduos mais divergentes são procedentes de MG e da região de Bonito em MS. As progênies de P. dubium de identificação 45, 47, 49, 50, 55 e 59, todas de MG, são as mais promissoras, enquanto que as progênies 6 e 9, foram as menos promissoras, baseando-se nos caracteres morfológicos.

Abstract There is little information regarding the genetic diversity of native species aimed at identifying the best viable progenies for in situ and ex situ conservation. Furthermore, there is a lack of future forest improvement programs. We aimed to know the genetic diversity of 64 Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub. (Fabaceae) progenies. We determined this species' dendrometric characteristics, and when using multivariate techniques and cluster analysis, we verified the differences between the progenies and groups with less heterogeneity. The progeny and provenance test was installed in Dourados (Mato Grosso do Sul - MS), with seeds collected in three MS regions (Vale do Ivinhema, Serra de Maracaju, and Serra da Bodoquena) and in the micro-region of Lavras (Minas Gerais - MG). The experiment was conducted in an alpha lattice 8 x 8 with four repetitions. We found genetic variability among and within P. dubium populations for all height, diameter, circumference at breast height, volume, and basal area characters. We suggest that P. dubium populations have high genetic variability, which indicates possible genetic improvement through best progeny selection. The UPGMA and Tocher methods grouped the progenies into three and nine groups, respectively, in which the most divergent individuals come from MG and the Bonito region in MS. Based on morphological characters, P. dubium progenies identified as 45, 47, 49, 50, 55, and 59 from MG are the most promising, while progenies 6 and 9 were the least promising.

Resumo A exposição à dieta hiperlipídica pode alterar o controle da ingestão de alimentos, promovendo hiperfagia e obesidade. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos dessa dieta sobre a expressão gênica dos receptores de dopamina (drd1 e drd2), da proopiomelanocortina (pomc) e neuropeptídeo Y (npy), e preferência alimentar em ratos adultos. Ratas Wistar foram alimentadas com uma dieta hiperlipídica ou controle durante a gestação e lactação. Os descendentes foram alocados em grupos: Lactação – Controle (C) e Hiperlipídica (H). Pós-desmame – Controle Controle (CC), descendentes das genitoras do grupo controle e alimentados com dieta controle após o desmame; Controle Hiperlipídica (CH), descendentes das genitoras do grupo controle e alimentados com dieta hiperlipídica após o desmame; Hiperlipídica Controle (HC), descendentes das genitoras do grupo hiperlipídica e alimentados com dieta controle após o desmame; Hiperlipídica Hiperlipídica (HH), descendentes das genitoras do grupo hiperlipídica e alimentados com dieta hiperlipídica após o desmame. Os grupos CH e HH apresentaram maior expressão de drd1 em comparação ao CC. O drd2 de CH e HC apresentou maior expressão gênica que o CC. HH apresentou maior expressão de pomc em comparação com os outros grupos. O HC também apresentou maior expressão de pomc em comparação ao CH. O npy do HH apresentou maior expressão em relação ao CH e HC. HH e HC tiveram uma preferência maior por uma dieta rica em gordura no 102º dia de vida. A dieta hiperlipídica alterou a expressão gênica dos drd1, drd2, pomc e npy e influenciou na preferência alimentar pela dieta hiperlipídica.

Abstract Exposure to the hight-fat diet may alter the control of food intake promoting hyperphagia and obesity. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of this diet on dopamine receptors (drd1 and drd2), proopiomelanocortin (pomc), neuropeptideY (npy) genes expression, and preference food in adult rats. Wistar female rats were fed a hight-fat or control diet during pregnancy and lactation. The offspring were allocated into groups: Lactation – Control (C) and High-fat (H). Post-weaning – Control Control (CC), offspring of mothers C, fed a control diet after weaning; Control Hight-fat (CH), offspring of mothers C, fed a hight-fat diet after weaning; Hight-fat Control (HC), offspring of mothers H, fed with control diet after weaning; and Hight-fat Hight-fat (HH), offspring of mothers H, fed a H diet after weaning. The groups CH and HH presented greater expression of drd1 in comparison to the CC. The drd2 of CH and HC presented higher gene expression than did CC. HH presented higher pomc expression in comparison to the other groups. HC also presented greater expression in comparison to CH. The npy of HH presented greater expression in relation to CH and HC. HH and HC have had a higher preference for a high-fat diet at 102º life’s day. The high-fat diet altered the gene expression of the drd1, drd2, pomc and npy, and influencing the food preference for high-fat diet.

ABSTRACT In low-order streams, the processing of allochthonous leaf litter is essential in the carbon/energy flow dynamics. Benthic macroinvertebrates, such as chironomids, play critical roles in the breakdown of allochthonous materials, because their larvae take part in intricate trophic networks and have varied trophic ecologies. We evaluated the effects of intra-annual variability on the input of allochthonous leaf litter, and the interactions of leaf-detritus on the succession of Chironomidae assemblages in the dry, rainy, and transition seasons (rainy-dry and dry-rainy). The study took place in a stream in the Brazilian Cerrado. Leaves were incubated in the stream to ascertain the colonization process by Chironomidae and the loss of leaf litter mass after 90 days. Functional feeding groups (FFG) were less rich and less abundant in the dry and dry-rainy seasons, than in the other seasons. The FFG composition of Chironomidae demonstrated that temporal variation between seasons was affected by the exposure time of the leaf-detritus in the stream, and there was more segregation during the dry and rainy seasons. In conclusion, the colonization of leaf-detritus by Chironomidae larvae depended on how long allochthonous plant material remained in the stream, and the variability of the organic matter dynamics input into the stream.

Resumo O dimorfismo sexual de Kinosternon scorpioides foi avaliado utilizando-se duas técnicas diferentes (morfometria linear e geométrica) a partir de imagens e medições lineares da carapaça e plastrão de adultos (machos e fêmeas). A morfometria linear indicou que as médias de altura da carapaça, largura da carapaça e plastrão são estatisticamente diferentes entre os sexos, sendo as fêmeas mais largas e altas. Na avaliação da morfometria geométrica, a ANOVA demonstrou que existe variação de tamanho do plastrão, e na forma da carapaça e do plastrão, expressando uma tendência de forma para cada sexo. O dimorfismo sexual, portanto, é verificado para esta espécie, notadamente pelo plastrão. Este trabalho indica uma ferramenta adicional para o conhecimento fenotípico dos animais, contribuindo no estudo de populações ameaçadas.

Abstract The sexual dimorphism of the Kinosternon scorpioides was evaluated using two different techniques (linear and geometric morphometry) from images and linear measurements of the carapace and plastron of adults (male and female). Linear morphometry indicated that the height and width of carapace and plastron are statistically different between sexes, with females being wider and taller. In the evaluation of geometric morphometry, ANOVA demonstrated variation in the size of the plastron and the shape of the carapace and plastron, expressing a tendency in shape for each sex. Sexual dimorphism, therefore, is verified for this species, notably by the plastron. This study indicates an additional tool for the phenotypic knowledge of animals, contributing to the study of threatened populations.

This study aimed to develop a reliable stability-indicating method (SIM) for amoxicillin 500 mg capsules (DP-drug product). A literature review addressing amoxicillin (AMX; DS-drug substance) forced degradation studies and the existing SIMs was conducted to verify the most significant outcomes. Subsequently, the forced degradation of DP and DS was carried out following the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) guidelines, including thermal degradation (dry and wet heat), acidic and alkaline hydrolyses, hydrogen peroxide oxidation, reaction with copper, and photodegradation. Both DS and DP were more susceptible to 0.015 M NaOH, resulting in approximately 50% degradation. AMX DS and DP were not significantly photodegraded, but some degradation products (PDegs) showed susceptibility to light exposure. Thermodegraded samples showing ≥ 10% degradation exhibited modified profiles in thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRPD) of DS samples exposed to dry and wet heat displayed complete amorphization of AMX, attesting to the occurrence of physical degradation concomitantly with chemical degradation, which can alter the drug’s bioavailability. In contrast, the thermodegraded DP samples exhibited intact AMX crystals interspersed with the amorphous form, perhaps partly protected by the excipient. The validated SIM was able to detect and quantify about 80 PDegs.

Abstract In order to reduce the impacts of the industrial effluent on the environment, silicon carbide hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the precipitation-immersion technique and sintered at 1450 and 1500 °C. The membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, their surface structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, pore size distribution and porosity, mechanical properties, and flow measurements with distilled water and effluent generated by the indigo blue industry. The sintered membranes presented crystalline phases of silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. The tubes presented defect-free microstructure and uniform porous surface, with porosity above 50%. The silicon carbide membrane presented significant reductions of the solutes and colloidal particle contents in the effluent. The membranes sintered at 1500 °C proved to be more efficient for reductions of the turbidity and color of the effluent. Silicon carbide hollow fiber membrane is an interesting alternative for the treatment of effluents from the textile industry.

Resumo Objetivo Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar a correlação entre medidas murinométricas e tecido adiposo retroperitoneal em ratos expostos à dieta hiperlipídica. Material e métodos: Foram utilizados ratos Wistar machos adultos, descendentes de mães que consumiram dieta hiperlipídica durante a gestação e lactação e alimentados com a mesma dieta após o desmame. Aos 60 dias de vida, foram medidos o peso corporal, o eixo longitudinal e a circunferência da cintura (CC). O Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) e o Índice de Lee foram calculados para posterior análise da correlação com a quantidade de tecido adiposo retroperitoneal dissecado no mesmo dia. Para análise dos dados, utilizou-se o teste de correlação de Pearson, considerando significância estatística para p <0.05. Resultados: O peso corporal apresentou uma correlação fraca (r= 0,31; p= 0,38) com o tecido adiposo retroperitoneal. Enquanto o longitudinal correlacionou moderadamente e negativo (r= -0,40; p= 0,25). A circunferência abdominal (r = 0,62; p = 0,05), índice de massa corporal (r= 0,61; p= 0,03) e Lee (r=0,69; p= 0,03) correlacionaram-se moderada e positivamente com o tecido adiposo. Conclusão: Entre as medidas murinométricas, o peso e o eixo longitudinal não foram bons indicadores para representar o acúmulo de tecido adiposo retroperitoneal em ratos. No entanto, o índice de Lee parece ser o melhor indicador murinométrico para diagnosticar o acúmulo de gordura retroperitoneal. O IMC, índice de Lee e CA foram parâmetros murinométricos com maior correlação.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to verify the correlation between murine measurements and retroperitoneal adipose tissue in rats exposed to the high-fat diet. Material and methods: Wistar male adult rats, descendants of mothers who consumed a high-fat diet during pregnancy and lactation and fed the same diet after weaning were used. At 60 days of life, body weight, longitudinal axis and waist circumference (WC) were measured. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and the Lee Index were calculated for a posterior analysis of the correlation with the amount of retroperitoneal adipose tissue dissected on the same day. For analysis of the data, the Pearson correlation test was used, considering statistical significance for p <0.05. Results: Body weight had a weak correlation (r= 0.31; p= 0.38) with retroperitoneal adipose tissue. While the longitudinal correlated moderately and negative (r= -0.40; p= 0.25). Abdominal circumference (r= 0.62; p= 0.05), body mass index (r= 0.61; p= 0.03) and Lee (r= 0.69; p= 0.03) correlated moderately and positively with adipose tissue. Conclusion: Among the measured murine measurements, weight and longitudinal axis were not good indicators to represent accumulation of retroperitoneal adipose tissue in rats. However, Lee's index seems to be the best murine marker to diagnose the accumulation of retroperitoneal fat. BMI, CA and Lee index were murine parameters with higher correlation.
