OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a relação da força de preensão manual com a função física em indivíduos idosos institucionalizados. MÉTODOS: Cento e cinquenta e sete idosos institucionalizados de ambos os sexos em sete diferentes instituições de longa permanência foram submetidos a avaliação da composição corporal, função cognitiva, forca de preensão manual (PREENSAO), mobilidade funcional, equilíbrio corporal (escala de equilíbrio de BERG e teste unipodal) e velocidade de caminhada (VELCAM). RESULTADOS: Em geral, os participantes deste estudo não apresentaram comprometimento da função cognitiva, mobilidade funcional, equilíbrio corporal ou da VELCAM. Os homens desenvolveram maior PREENSÃO e alcançaram maior escore em BERG. Os voluntários mais aptos (i.e., P75 a P100) apresentaram melhor função física, BERG e VeLcAM; os menos aptos (i.e., P0 a P25) apresentaram maior estatura e melhor VELCAM. A PREENSAO foi independentemente associada à função física e ao equilíbrio unipodal somente no sexo feminino (amostra total). A função cognitiva (feminino, P25 a P75; masculino, amostra total) e a idade (masculino, amostra total) demonstraram tendência de interferência em relação à avaliação da função física. A idade e o peso corporal parecem ser candidatos a preditores da VELCAM, sobretudo no P25 a P75 do sexo feminino, enquanto a função cognitiva é preditor de VELCAM no sexo masculino (P75 a P100). Por outro lado, a idade e o peso corporal são significativamente associados a VELCAM (feminino, amostra total). CONCLUSÃO: Os dados deste estudo piloto permitem concluir que a forca de preensão manual foi independentemente associada a função física de mulheres idosas institucionalizadas.

PURPOSE: To analyze the relationship of grip strength and physical function in institutionalized older people. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-seven nursing home residents of seven different long-stay institutions underwent evaluation of body composition, cognitive function, grip strength, mobility, balance (balance scale test BERG and single-leg stance test) and gait speed. RESULTS: Volunteers had no impairment of cognitive function, functional mobility, balance or gait speed. Men had higher grip strength and achieved higher scores in BERG. Fittest volunteers (i.e., P75 to P100) had better functional mobility, BERG and gait speed; less fit volunteers (i.e., P0 to P25) were taller and had better gait speed. The grip strength was independently associated with functional mobility and balance in the single-leg stance test only in females. The cognitive function (female, P25 to P75, male, total sample) and age (male, total sample) showed a tendency to be mediators of functional mobility. Age and body weight seem to confound the gait speed, especially for females (P25 to P75), while cognitive function confound it in males (P75 to P100). However, age and body weight are significantly associated with gait speed (female, total sample). CONCLUSION: We can conclude that grip strength was independently associated with functional mobility and balance of institutionalized older women.

OBJETIVO: O teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6M) é uma estrategia simples e de baixo custo operacional que objetivamente mede a aptidão cardiorrespiratória de indivíduos com diferentes condições de saúde. Nosso objetivo foi desenvolver equações de predição da potência aeróbica em homens idosos saudáveis usando o TC6M. MÉTODOS: Foram medidos a composição corporal (massa corporal [MC], índice de massa corporal [BMI], porcentagem de gordura [%G]) e potência aeróbica de pico através de teste cardiopulmonar de exercício máximo (velocidade, frequência cardíaca [FC] e consumo de oxigênio [VO2] no limiar anaeróbico e no pico]) e através do TC6M (distancia [D], produto massa corporal x distância, FC e VO2de pico) em 76 idosos saudáveis com idade entre 65 e 80 anos (69.1 ± 0.3 anos). RESULTADOS: Foram observadas correlações significativas para VO2pico no TC6M em função do produto MCxD (R = 0,75, P < 0,0005), MC (R = 0,56, P < 0,0005), D (R = 0,43, P = 0,0004) e FC máxima (R = 0,37, P = 0,001). A correlacionou-se significativamente com %G (R = -0,43, P = 0,005), IMC (R = -0,36, P = 0,021) e idade (R = -0,31, P < 0,045), enquanto que a MCxD correlacionou-se com MC (R = 0,86, P < 0,005). A inclusão da MCxD aumentou o R 2 de 0,65 para 0,74 e diminuiu o erro padrão da estimativa (EPE) gerando a equação (R = 0,86, EPE = 182,1 mL·min-1, P < 0,0005) para a predição do VO2peak: VO2peak = 962,2 + (0,037 x MCxD) + (8,565 x FC máxima). Foi também gerado um modelo preditivo não dependente de exercício através de regressão univariada, mas não múltipla. A %G (R=0,43, EPE = 702,2 m, P < 0,005) gerou o melhor modelo para a predição da distancia, i.e., distancia = 702,2 - (3,067 x %G). CONCLUSÃO: Nossas modelos de predição parecem estimar precisamente o VO2pico de idosos saudáveis, especialmente quando a MCxD é considerada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A simple, low-cost approach commonly used to objectively analyze the cardiorespiratory fitness of individuals with different health conditions is the six-minute walk test (6-MWT). Our objective was to develop peak aerobic power prediction using the six-minute walk test in healthy older men. METHODS: We measured body composition (body mass [BM], body mass index [BMI], fat percentage [FAT]) and peak aerobic power breath-by-breath during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET [velocity, heart rate [HR] and VO2 at the anaerobic threshold and peak]) and a 6-MWT (distance [D], weight by distance [WxD], HR and oxygen consumption [VO2] at peak) in 76 healthy older men aged 65 to 80 years (69.1 ± 0.3 yrs-old). RESULTS: We observed significant correlations for VO2peak during the 6-MWT as a function of WxD (R = 0.75, P < 0.0005), BM (R = 0.56, P < 0.0005), D (R = 0.43, P = 0.0004) and maximum HR (R = 0.37, P = 0.001). Distance correlated significantly with FAT (R = -0.43, P = 0.005), BMI (R = -0.36, P = 0.021) and age (R = -0.31, P < 0.045), whereas WxD correlated with BM (R = 0.86, P<0.005).The inclusion of WxD increased the R2 from 0.65 to 0.74 and decreased the estimative error while yielding the following equation (R = 0.86, standard error of the estimate (SEE) = 182.1 mL•min-1, P < 0.0005) to predict VO2peak: VO2peak = 962.2 + (0.037 x WxD) + (8.565 x maximum HR). A non-exercise model was obtained by univariate regressions but not multiple regressions. The FAT (R = 0.43, SEE = 702.2 m, P < 0.005) yielded the best model for predicting distance, i.e., distance = 702.2 - (3.067 x FAT). CONCLUSION: Our prediction model seems to accurately estimate VO2peak in healthy older men primarily when WxD is considered.

OBJETIVO: Comparar e analisar as relações entre imagem corporal, composição coporal e função física em mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas com sobrepeso e peso normal. MÉTODOS: Medimos a massa corporal, índice de massa corporal (IMC), circunferência da cintura, força de preensão manual, força de membros inferiores, flexão de cotovelo, equilíbrio, marcha estacionária, velocidade normal e máxima de caminhada, levantar-se da cadeira em 700 mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas com sobrepeso (N: 398 [67.2 ± 8.5 years; IMC > 27 kg·m2]) e peso normal (N: 302 [67.3 ± 8.5 years; IMC < 27 kg·m2]). A imagem corporal atual (ICA) e ideal (ICI), assim como a insatisfação com a imagem corporal (IIC) foram determinadas pelas respostas das voluntarias de acordo com silhuetas padronizadas. RESULTADOS: A analise de regressão múltipla verificou associações positivas (ICA) e negativas (IIC) para equilíbrio na categoria obesidade. Foi observada associação positiva com a velocidade usual e máxima de caminhada para ICA (categorias peso normal e obesidade) e IIC (sobrepeso). Existiram associações positivas para o desempenho no teste de marcha estacionária, flexão de cotovelo e numero de repetições para levantar-se da cadeira. CONCLUSÃO: Mulheres idosas fisicamente ativas demonstram elevada prevalência de insatisfação com a imagem corporal independente do índice de massa corporal. Esse resultado é mediado pela idade, e está associado com pior função física; associações semelhantes foram observadas para a imagem corporal atual.

OBJECTIVE: To compare and examine relationships between body image (BI), body composition and physical function in overweight and normal weight active older women. METHOD: We measured body mass (BM), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WAIST), grip strength (GS), lower limb muscle strength [LLMS], arm curl, balance, step-in-place test (SIPT), usual walk (WALK), fast walking (fastWALK), single chair stand (CHAIRtime) and repeated chair stand (CHAIRreps) in 398 overweight or obese women (67.2 ± 8.5 years; BMI > 27 kg·m2) and 302 women with a BMI < 27 kg·m2 (67.3 ± 8.5 years). Current (CBI) and ideal body image (IBI), and body dissatisfaction (DS; current - ideal) were determined by participant's responses to standardized silhouettes. RESULTS: Multiple regression analyses verified positive (CBI) and negative associations (DS) for balance in obese category. A positive association with WALK and fastWALK was observed for current (normal weight and obesity categories) and IBI (overweight). There were positive associations for SIPT, arm curl and CHAIRreps. CONCLUSION: Physically active older women showed an elevated prevalence of dissatisfaction regardless of BMI which was mediated by age, and associated with worsened physical function; similar associations were seen for current body image.

Resumo O presente estudo avaliou nível de atividade física (AF) e seus efeitos associados entre estudantes da rede pública de São Paulo. Um estudo transversal foi feito usando uma amostra representativa de estudantes da rede pública de ensino de São Paulo. Foi utilizado o International Physical Activity Questionnaire para determinar o nível AF. Estudantes que relataram pelo menos 300 minutos/semana de AF, foram considerados ativos. As variáveis independentes foram: sexo, idade, índice de massa corporal, educação, região e o conhecimento do programa Agita São Paulo. A prevalência de AF regular foi de 71,7%. Os meninos (RP = 1,09, IC95% = 1,04 -1,15), 17 anos de idade (RP = 1,16, 95% IC 1,09-1,24), terceiro ano do ensino médio (RP = 1,20, IC95% = 1,12-1,29 ) e aqueles que residiam na região do Centro-Oeste (RP = 1,27, IC95% 1,16-1,38) tinham maior probabilidade de ser ativos. Meninos de 17 anos de idade, no terceiro ano do ensino médio, que residiam no Centro-Oeste e reconhecia o programa Agita São Paulo/Agita Galera tinham níveis mais elevados de AF. Alunos de São Paulo apresentaram um elevado nível de AF. Meninos com idade superior a 17 anos, do 3º ano do ensino médio, que residiam na região Centro-Oeste, e reconhecia o programa Agita São Paulo/Agita Galera foram mais propensos a ser mais ativos.

Males at least 17 years old in their 3rd year of high school who lived in the Midwest and recognized the Agita São Paulo/Agita Galera program had higher levels of PA. São Paulo students presented a high level of PA. Moreover, males older than 17 years, attending their 3rd year of high school, who lived in the Midwest region, and recognized the Agita São Paulo/Agita Galera program were the most likely to be more active.

O objetivo do presente foi verificar a tendência secular da maturação sexual de escolares de 11 a 15 anos de idade, nos períodos de 10 e 20 anos. Foram envolvidos no estudo 1.002 escolares com idade entre 11 e 15 anos; 536 meninos (12,6±1,3 anos) e 466 meninas (12,5±1,2 anos), que participaram do Projeto Longitudinal Misto de Crescimento, Desenvolvimento e Aptidão Física de Ilhabela. Os escolares foram avaliados nos períodos de 1990/91 (Inicial), 2000/01 (10 anos) e 2009/10 (20 anos). A maturação sexual foi realizada de acordo com o método de autoavaliação. A idade de menarca (mês e ano) foi obtida pelo método retrospectivo. A análise estatística utilizada foi Anova "one way" seguido do post hoc de Tukey. O nível de significância adotado foi p<0,01. O início da idade de menarca foi: 12,5±1,2 anos; no grupo 10 anos: 12,3±1,0 (Δ= -1,6%); e no grupo 20 anos: 12,2±1,0 anos (Δ= -2,4%). Embora tenha ocorrido um declínio na idade de menarca durante os períodos, não houve diferença significante. Houve diferença significante somente em genitais (G4), e pelos púbicos (P3) em meninos após 10 e 20 anos. No mesmo período, não ocorreu diferença significante nos estágios maturacionais nas meninas. Concluiu-se que a tendência secular das características sexuais secundárias dos meninos (genital e pelos púbicos) e nas meninas (mamas e pelos púbicos) e idade de menarca foi nula no período de 10 e 20 anos.

The objective of this study was to verify the secular trends of sexual maturation of students between 11 and 15 years old, during a period of 10 and 20 years. The sample was composed by 1,002 students aged between 11 and 15 years; 536 boys (12.6±1.3 years old) and 466 girls (12.5±1.2 years old) who took part in the Ilhabela Mixed-Longitudinal Project on Growth, Development, and Physical Fitness. The students' assessment period occurred in 1990/91 (initial), 2000/01 (10 years later), and 2009/10 (20 years later). Sexual maturation was analyzed according to the self-assessment method and age at menarche (month and year) was collected retrospectively. The statistical analysis used was: one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc test. The level of significance was p<0.01. The onset of menarche in the initial analysis was at: 12.5±1.2 years old; in the 2000/01 group: 12.3±1.0 years old (Δ=-1.6%), and in the 2009/10 group: 12.2±1.0 years old (Δ=-2.4%). Although there was a tendency towards reduction in age at menarche along the periods investigated, differences were not significant. There were significant differences only in genitals (G4), and pubic hair (P3) in boys after 10 and 20 years. In the same period, it did not occur any significant difference in maturational stages for girls. In conclusion, there was no secular trend of secondary sexual characteristics in boys (genital and pubic hair) and girls (breast and pubic hair) and in age at menarche over 10 and 20 years.

CONTEXTO: O Commitment Exercise Scale (CES) avalia o comprometimento, o comportamento e a atitude de pacientes com transtornos alimentares em relação ao exercício físico. OBJETIVO: Tradução e adaptação transcultural do CES para o idioma português (BRA), validação de conteúdo e análise da consistência interna. MÉTODOS: Envolveu cinco etapas: (1) tradução; (2) retradução; (3) revisão técnica e avaliação semântica; (4) validação de conteúdo por profissionais da área - juízes; (5) avaliação do instrumento por uma amostra de estudantes, por meio da avaliação do grau de compreensão e análise da consistência interna do instrumento pelo coeficiente a de Cronbach. RESULTADOS: A escala foi traduzida e adaptada, sendo considerada de fácil compreensão (grau de compreensão de 4,3 a 4,9), e demonstrou valores do coeficiente aceitáveis (a de Cronbach: 0,60 a 0,79). CONCLUSÃO: A partir do processo de adaptação transcultural, os resultados satisfatórios possibilitam a recomendação da versão brasileira do CES. São necessárias análises de validação de construto, fatorial e de reprodutibilidade.

BACKGROUND: The Exercise Commitment Scale (CES) evaluates commitment, attitude and behavior regarding exercise in eating disorders patients. OBJECTIVE: Translation and cultural adaptation of the CES for Portuguese (BRA), content validation and analysis of internal consistency. METHODS: This study involved five steps: (1) translation, (2) re-translation, (3) technical review and evaluation semantics, (4) content validation by professionals - judges, (5) assessment of the instrument in a sample of students, by assessing the degree of understanding and analysis of internal consistency by Cronbach's a coefficient. RESULTS: The scale was translated and adapted. It was considered easy to understand (degree of understanding from 4.3 to 4.9) and showed acceptable consistency coefficients (Cronbach's a: 0.60 to 0.79). DISCUSSION: Satisfactory results of this adaptation process allow the recommendation of the CES Brazilian version. Analysis is needed of construct and factorial validation, and of reproducibility.

INTRODUÇÃO: O declínio na força explosiva e potência muscular de membros inferiores (MMII) tem sido relacionado ao prejuízo funcional de idoso; entretanto, a influência do envelhecimento nestas variáveis, considerando os movimentos multiarticulares, não tem sido bem documentada. OBJETIVOS: 1) comparar a força explosiva e a potência muscular de MMII de mulheres entre 50 e 79 anos em relação aos valores de referência aos 18 anos; e 2) associar essas variáveis com a capacidade funcional. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliadas 227 mulheres não sedentárias, subdivididas nos grupos 50-59, 60-69 e 70-79 anos de idade. Como força explosiva foi considerada a impulsão vertical sem auxílio dos braços (FE) e como capacidade funcional a velocidade normal de andar (VEL), o tempo para levantar da cadeira (CAD) e o equilíbrio estático (EQ). A potência muscular (POT) foi estimada pela altura obtida no salto vertical. O valor correspondente aos 18 anos foi considerado como referência. RESULTADOS: Foram observados menores valores (p < 0,05) em FE e POT nos três grupos de idade comparados aos 18 anos, sendo tais variáveis ainda menores no grupo 70-79 anos (p < 0,05). Somente o grupo 70-79 anos apresentou menor valor (p < 0,05) em VEL e EQ. A alteração em FE comparada à POT foi significativamente maior em todos os grupos (p < 0,05). À exceção da variável CAD nos grupos de 50-59 e 70-79 anos, a FE apresentou maior associação com a capacidade funcional do que a POT. CONCLUSÃO: FE e POT apresentaram menor valor quando comparadas ao grupo de 18 anos; entretanto, a POT não se altera em função da faixa etária. Contudo, a FE apresentou maior associação com a capacidade funcional.

INTRODUCTION: decrease in explosive strength and muscular power of lower limbs (LL) has been related to functional loss in the elderly; however, the influence of aging on these variables considering multiarticular movements are not well reported. PURPOSE: 1) to compare the explosive strength and power of LL in women between 50 and 79 years old, having the 18 year-old values as reference; 2) to study the relationship between these variables with functional capacity. METHODS: 227 non-sedentary women were evaluated and divided into 3 groups: 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79 years old. The height of countermovement jump without movement arms (ES) was used as explosive strength index and normal walking velocity (VEL), time to stand from a chair (CHA) and static balance (SB) were used for functional capacity. Power (PO) was estimated by the jump height. The 18 year-old values were used as reference. RESULTS: lower values (p < 0.05) in ES and PO were observed in the three groups when compared to reference, being those variables lower in 70-79 years (p < 0.05). Only 70-79 years group showed lower value (p < 0.05) in VEL and SB. Compared to PO, the change in ES was significantly higher in all groups (p < 0.05). Except for CHA in 50-59 and 70-79 years old groups, the ES showed higher association with the functional capacity than PO. CONCLUSION: The ES and PO showed changes when compared with the 18 year-old values, but PO did not change between the groups. However, ES showed higher correlation with functional capacity.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o consumo alimentar e o padrão de refeições de adolescentes, São Paulo, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Por meio do Recordatório de 24 horas, avaliou-se o consumo energético total, de macronutrientes, cálcio, ferro e vitamina A e a omissão de refeições ou sua substituição por lanche, de adolescentes de uma escola pública de Ilhabela. Comparou-se o consumo alimentar por grupo com a Pirâmide Alimentar do adolescente. Foi realizada análise descritiva, aplicou-se o teste Qui-quadrado (p < 0,005), além de análise qualitativa. RESULTADOS: o consumo energético total foi inferior ao estimado para 66% dos adolescentes, o percentual de carboidratos foi abaixo do recomendado e o de lipídios e proteínas acima do recomendado. Houve omissão do café da manhã entre 21% dos adolescentes e um terço deles substituiu almoço ou jantar por lanche. CONCLUSÃO: Os adolescentes apresentaram insuficiência calórica na dieta e baixo consumo de frutas, verduras e legumes; o padrão de refeições foi satisfatório, mas o café da manhã deve ser incentivado.

OBJECTIVE: To assess food intake and meal patterns in adolescents, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 228 adolescents from a public school, SP, Brazil. METHODS: Total energy, macronutrients, calcium, iron, and vitamin A intakes were evaluated. The food pattern was compared with the eating patterns established by the Food Pyramid for adolescents. Meal frequency was assessed to identify meal skipping. Descriptive statistics and Chi Square were used. RESULTS: Mean energy intake was lower than estimated for 66% adolescents, carbohydrate intake was lower than estimated for 50% adolescents, fat intake was higher than estimated for 50% of adolescents, and protein intake was above the recommendation for 40% of adolescents. Among adolescents studied, 21% skipped breakfast and one third of them had snacks instead of lunch or dinner. CONCLUSION: The diet of adolescents had insufficient energy intake and deficient intake of fruits and vegetables. Meal patterns were satisfactory, but breakfast should be encouraged.

RESULTADOS: o consumo energético total foi inferior ao estimado para 66% dos adolescentes, o percentual de carboidratos foi abaixo do recomendado e o de lipídios e proteínas acima do recomendado. Houve omissão do café da manhã entre 21% dos adolescentes e um terço deles substituiu almoço ou jantar por lanche. CONCLUSÃO: Os adolescentes apresentaram insuficiência calórica na dieta e baixo consumo de frutas, verduras e legumes; o padrão de refeições foi satisfatório, mas o café da manhã deve ser incentivado.

OBJECTIVE: To assess food intake and meal patterns in adolescents, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 228 adolescents from a public school, SP, Brazil. METHODS: Total energy, macronutrients, calcium, iron, and vitamin A intakes were evaluated. The food pattern was compared with the eating patterns established by the Food Pyramid for adolescents. Meal frequency was assessed to identify meal skipping. Descriptive statistics and Chi Square were used. RESULTS: Mean energy intake was lower than estimated for 66% adolescents, carbohydrate intake was lower than estimated for 50% adolescents, fat intake was higher than estimated for 50% of adolescents, and protein intake was above the recommendation for 40% of adolescents. Among adolescents studied, 21% skipped breakfast and one third of them had snacks instead of lunch or dinner. CONCLUSION: The diet of adolescents had insufficient energy intake and deficient intake of fruits and vegetables. Meal patterns were satisfactory, but breakfast should be encouraged.

Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar o efeito da interrupção de um programa de exercícios com pesos livres sobre a força muscular de mulheres idosas através do teste de uma repetição máxima (1-RM). Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por oito mulheres idosas saudáveis (x: 64,3 ± 7,6 anos) que foram envolvidas, previamente à interrupção, em um programa de exercícios com pesos livres durante 12 semanas, três vezes por semana, três séries de 10 repetições a 50% 1-RM para seis tipos de exercícios para os membros superiores e inferiores. O teste 1-RM foi realizado imediatamente após a interrupção do programa e subseqüentemente a cada quatro semanas (4ª, 8ª e 12ª semanas). Os valores demonstraram decréscimo estatisticamente significativo na força muscular de ambas as extremidades corporais, principalmente após a 8ª semana de pausa. O decréscimo percentual na 12ª semana variou de 27,5% a 35,1% para a força muscular de membros inferiores e superiores, respectivamente; aconteceu, principalmente, nos membros superiores. Os membros inferiores preservaram mais a capacidade de manutenção da força muscular após a interrupção do treinamento (22,9% a 71,9%) que os membros superiores (-14,8% a 16,1%) quando os valores absolutos finais do período de destreinamento foram comparados com os valores iniciais do treinamento. Esses resultados permitem concluir que a interrupção de um programa de exercícios com pesos livres produz efeito negativo na força muscular de mulheres idosas, especialmente após a 8ª semana.

The purpose of this study was to verify the interruption effect of a muscle strengthening training program on muscle strength through one maximum repetition test in elderly women. Before interruption, eight healthy elderly women (x: 64.3 ± 7.6 yr.) were engaged in a muscle strengthening training program for 12 weeks, 3 times per week, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 50% of one maximum repetition test (1-RM) in six exercises for both upper and lower limbs. The 1-RM test was performed immediately after the training period and subsequently every four weeks (4th, 8th and 12th week). Values showed a statistically significant decrease on muscle strength of lower and upper limbs, specially after 8 weeks. In the 12th week, lower and upper limb muscle strength decreased 27.5% to 35.1%, respectively; however, decrease was more remarkable in the upper limb. A greater capacity of muscle strength maintenance after training interruption was observed in the lower limb (22.9% to 71.9%) than in the upper limb (-14.8% to 16.1%) when the absolute values of the detraining period were compared to the values at the beginning of the training period. These data allowed the authors to conclude that the weight training program interruption leads to a negative impact on muscle strength of elderly women, specially after 8 weeks.

Este estudo teve como objetivo: 1) verificar a estabilidade do perfil de aptidão física de jovens atletas de handebol durante a adolescência; e 2) comparar os resultados com a seleção paulista adulta feminina. Para tanto, a amostra foi constituída por cinco jovens atletas de handebol feminino que foram seguidas semilongitudinalmente por dois anos, com média de idade e tempo de prática inicial e final de 14,2 ± 1,3 anos, 18,4 ± 10,7 meses e 16,2 ± 1,3 anos, 42,8 ± 10,7 meses, respectivamente (12h/semana de treinamento). Na temporada de 1997 quatro atletas foram pré-selecionadas para a seleção brasileira de cadetes. As variáveis mensuradas foram: peso corporal (P); altura total (A); impulsão vertical sem (IVS) e com auxílio dos membros superiores (IVC); impulsão horizontal (IH); agilidade (SR); velocidade (50m) e potência anaeróbica (40seg.), seguindo padronização CELAFISCS. Os coeficientes de Pearson e Spearman foram significativamente altos e muitos altos (p < 0,05) para P (0,88), A (0,98 e 0,99), 50m (0,95 e 0,90) e 40seg. (0,87 e 0,90). Estes dados permitem concluir que as jovens atletas apresentaram alta estabilidade nas variáveis antropométricas, velocidade e potência anaeróbica durante um período de dois anos da adolescência, favorecendo a hipótese de que a expectativa de sucesso esportivo pode ser predita em idades precoces.

The purpose of this study was 1) to verify the stability of the physical fitness profile of young handball athletes during adolescence, and 2) to compare these athletes to the São Paulo state handball adult team. The sample comprised five young female handball athletes who were followed-up for two years, with mean age and practice time before and after of 14.2 ± 1.3 years-old, 18.4 ± 10.7 months and 16.2 ± 1.3 years-old, 42.8 ± 10.7 months, respectively (12h/week training). Variables measured were: body weight (W); body height (H); vertical jump without (VJWo) and with help of arms (VJ); long jump (LJ); agility (SR); velocity (50m) and anaerobic power (40seg.), by CELAFISCS standardization. It was verified that with the exception of VJW and 50m, the young athletes showed upper values for all variables. The Pearson and Spearman coefficients were significantly higher and much higher (p < 0.05) for W (0.88), H (0.98 and 0.99), 50m (0.95 and 0.90) and 40 sec (0.87 and 0.90). Data permit to conclude that young athletes showed stability in anthropometric variables, velocity, and anaerobic power during the adolescence period, thus supporting the hypothesis that the expectation of success in sports can be predicted from early age.
