Resumo A expansão de áreas de pastagens e cultivos agrícolas foi responsável pela maior parte do desmatamento no norte do estado de Minas Gerais. No presente estudo, avaliou-se a dinâmica do uso e cobertura da terra ocorrida nas últimas décadas (1986 a 2015) na Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Nascentes das Geraizeiras (RDS-NG) e em uma zona de 10 km do seu entorno no estado de Minas Gerais. Avaliaram-se também os efeitos do desmatamento sobre a fragmentação da vegetação natural usando dados de sensoriamento remoto e análise da paisagem. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que o desmatamento afetou mais da metade da vegetação natural até 2015, agravando a integridade dos fragmentos de vegetação nativa na área de estudo. A RDS-NG contribuiu para mitigar a fragmentação da vegetação natural ocorrida no entorno daquela Reserva com a regeneração natural de algumas áreas degradadas. Observou-se que a maior ameaça ambiental à reserva é a ocorrência do fogo, que varia anualmente em extensão e danos socioambientais. O uso sustentado das terras na RDS-NG pode ser melhorado com a ampliação das práticas de atividades econômicas sustentáveis, como o aproveitamento de produtos florestais não madeireiros, a implantação de consórcios agroflorestais e outras atividades econômicas de forma moderada. Essas práticas contribuirão para garantir a manutenção dos recursos naturais, a produção econômica e a geração de renda e trabalho à comunidade local, com inclusão de todos os segmentos sociais da população da Reserva e seu entorno.

Abstract The expansion of pastures and cropping fields was responsible for most deforestation in Northern Minas Gerais state. In this study, we assessed the dynamics of land use and cover that occurred in recent decades (1986 to 2015) in the Sustainable Development Reserve Nascentes das Geraizeiras (SDR-NG) and a 10 km buffer zone in the state of Minas Gerais. The effects of deforestation on native vegetation fragmentation were also evaluated using remotely sensed data and landscape analysis. This study indicates that deforestation affected more than half of the native vegetation by 2015, which affected the integrity of native vegetation fragments in the entire study area. The SDR-NG contributed to mitigating the fragmentation of natural vegetation that occurred around that Reserve because of a secondary regrowth observed in some previously degraded areas. It was observed that the most significant environmental threat to that Reserve is fire events, which vary annually in extent and socio-environmental damages. The land sustained use in the SDR-NG could be improved by expanding sustainable economic activities, such as using non-timber forest products, the implementation of agroforestry systems, and other economic activities moderately. These practices will ensure the maintenance of natural resources, economic production, increase income and labor opportunities to local communities, and include all social segments and populations living within and around that Reserve.

Resumo A extração seletiva de madeiras é uma atividade florestal que inclui a exploração de um grupo de espécies florestais em florestas nativas, normalmente as de maior valor ou interesse comercial. A extração seletiva de madeiras pode ser executada legalmente, em áreas de manejo e de exploração florestal para desmatamentos autorizados ou, ilegalmente, em situações não autorizadas, que ocorrem de forma predatória. No presente estudo, a dinâmica espaço-temporal da extração seletiva de madeiras no estado de Mato Grosso foi avaliada a partir de uma série temporal (de 1992 a 2016) de dados de florestas exploradas seletivamente detectadas, usando dados de sensoriamento remoto. A interpretação visual e a classificação semiautomática de imagens Landsat foram utilizadas para detectar as florestas alteradas por atividades de extração seletiva de madeiras na área de estudo. Com base nos presentes resultados, estimou-se que 41.926 km2 de florestas nativas foram exploradas ao menos uma vez entre 1992 e 2016 em Mato Grosso, com área média anual de 1.747 km2. As florestas exploradas seletivamente e detectadas com distúrbios persistentes ou recorrentes foram mais frequentes nos anos mais recentes desta análise. A maioria das florestas exploradas seletivamente na área e no período de estudo não foram desmatadas até 2016. Esse fato indica que a extração seletiva de madeiras consiste em um fenômeno desagregado do desmatamento no estado de Mato Grosso. Observou-se que uma média de 18 km2.ano-1 e 268,18 km2.ano-1 de florestas foram exploradas seletivamente dentro de Unidades de Conservação e Terras Indígenas, respectivamente, entre 1992 e 2016. As atividades de extração seletiva não apresentaram tendências significativas de aumento ou redução dentro de áreas protegidas no período analisado. As áreas de exploração seletiva de madeira foram persistentemente detectadas nos antigos polos madeireiros localizados na região centro-norte do Estado com, possivelmente, novos ciclos de corte nas áreas manejadas. Mais recentemente, a extração seletiva se expandiu à última fronteira florestal nativa no noroeste do estado de Mato Grosso. Finalmente, concluiu-se que a exploração madeireira impacta grande extensão de florestas nativas anualmente no estado de Mato Grosso e, por isso, precisa ser devidamente considerada e monitorada pelos órgãos ambientais devido aos seus potenciais impactos nas florestas e para apoiar a definição de políticas públicas para garantir a sustentabilidade da produção florestal futura naquele Estado.

Abstract Selective logging is a forestry activity that includes harvesting a group of tree species in native forests, usually those of higher value or commercial interest. Selective logging can be carried out legally, in forest management areas and forest areas previously authorized for deforestation, or illegally, in any other unauthorized cases that occur in a predatory manner. In this study, the spatiotemporal dynamic of selectively logged forests in the state of Mato Grosso was assessed based on a time-series (from 1992 to 2016) of logged forests detected using remotely sensed data. Visual interpretation and semi-automatic classification of Landsat imagery were used to detect forests impacted by selective logging activities in the study area. Based on the results, it was estimated that 41,926 km2 of native forests were selectively logged at least once between 1992 and 2016 in the state of Mato Grosso, an annual average of 1,747 km2. Selectively logged forests detected showing persistent or recurrent forest disturbances were more frequently observed in the most recent years of this analysis. Most of the selectively logged forests in the study area and period have not been deforested by 2016. It indicates that selective logging is a dissociated phenomenon with deforestation in the state of Mato Grosso. It was also observed that an average of 18 km2.year-1 and 268.18 km2.year-1 of native forests was selectively logged within Conservation Units and Indigenous Lands between 1992 and 2016. A significant tendency to increase or decrease logging activities within those protected areas in the analyzed period was not observed. Selectively logged forests were persistently detected in the old timber centers located in the central-northern region of the state of Mato Grosso, showing, potentially, new cutting cycles in those previously logged forests. More recently, selective logging activities have reached the last native forest frontier in northwestern Mato Grosso. Finally, it was concluded that selective logging is annually disturbing a considerable extension of native forests in the state of Mato Grosso and, therefore, needs to be adequately considered and monitored by environmental agencies due to its potential forest impacts and to support the definition of public policies to ensure the future sustainability of forest production in that state.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the potential of artificial neural networks (ANN) as a tool to estimate deforestation rates in the municipality of São Félix do Xingu, PA, Brazil. The following input variables were used: deforestation rate until 2014, slope, altitude, Euclidean distance to roads and rivers, permanent preservation area (PPA), and property area. A total of 2,800 properties were used, of which 2,000 were used for training and 800 for validation of the networks. The input layer included nine neurons: six as quantitative variables and three as categorical variables. The output layer included a single neuron - the deforestation rate. The training results indicated high correlation (r = 0.92) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 12.4%. Validation of the model estimated RMSE = 12.9% and r = 0.91. The study results evidenced the high potential of ANN as a tool to estimate farm deforestation rates.

Resumo As atividades de manejo florestal são consideradas importantes para o desenvolvimento sustentável no Brasil. Tais atividades, entretanto, exigem monitoramento rigoroso que muitas vezes é de difícil operacionalização. O mapeamento das áreas afetadas pela exploração seletiva de madeira e a mensuração dos impactos decorrentes da exploração florestal ainda são dependentes de extensos e onerosos levantamentos de campo. Neste estudo foi utilizada a tecnologia Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) aerotransportada para avaliação dos impactos causados pela extração seletiva de madeira em 21 Unidades de Produção Anual na Amazônia. As áreas de estudo estão localizadas nos estados de Rondônia e do Pará, dentro de Florestas Nacionais sob regime de concessão florestal federal. Foram utilizadas duas métricas derivadas da nuvem de pontos LiDAR para o mapeamento dos impactos nas florestas: a Canopy Height Model (CHM) como métrica do dossel e a Relative Density Model (RDM) como métrica do sub-bosque. Os resultados da detecção dos impactos florestais obtidos do mapeamento com dados do LiDAR são compatíveis com o levantamento realizado em campo. Estimou-se que as atividades de extração seletiva de madeiras impactaram em média 6,8% (± 1,3%, desvio padrão) da área total de sub-bosque das Unidades de Produção Anual (UPA) avaliadas e causaram incremento de 4,9% ± 0,9% em área de clareiras. A tecnologia LiDAR é efetiva para o monitoramento dos impactos da extração seletiva de madeiras em áreas sob concessão florestal federal na Amazônia.

Abstract Forest management activities are crucial for the sustainable development of Brazil. Those activities require, however, a strict monitoring that are often difficult to operationalize. The mapping of impacted areas by selective logging and the measurement of forest impacts because of logging operations are mostly based on extensive and costly field surveys. In this study, the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) airborne technology was used to assess the impacts caused by selective logging within 21 units of forest annual production in the Amazon. The study sites are in the states of Rondônia and Pará, within National Forests under federal forestry concession. We used two metrics derived from the point cloud LiDAR for mapping forest impacts: The Canopy Height Model (CHM) and the Relative Density Model (RDM) as forest understory metric. The results of detection of forest impacts derived from the LiDAR dataset showed similar performance of field-based surveys. We estimated that selective logging activities had impacted an average of 6.8% (± 1.3%, standard deviation) of the forest understory of the Annual Production Units (APU) studied and caused an increase of 4.9% (± 0.9%) in areas of forest canopy opening. The LiDAR technology showed to be effective for assessing and monitoring forest impacts of selective logging in the federal forest concessions in the Amazon.

ABSTRACT This study assessed the dynamics of the land use and cover changes, deforestation trends and the current status of the Legal Forest Reserves (LFR) and Permanent Protected areas (PPA) in the Nova Bonal Sustainable Development Project (SDP) between 1997-2014. Deforestation datasets and fieldwork were used in this analysis. Our results indicate that there was no trend in the estimated deforestation rate dataset for the SDP, but there was a decreasing trend in deforestation rates within its 10-km buffer zone, most likely due to the scarcity of native forests in that area. The negative environmental area balance of PPA and LFR were observed within the 10-km buffer zone of the SDP. Finally, we conclude that the alternative land and forest uses enforced within the SDP are more effective for environmental conservation than the commonly adopted land uses, especially pastures adopted by conventional colonization located around it.

ABSTRACT This study applied a deforestation model for the entire State of Rondônia assuming three scenarios of deforestation: business as usual, optimistic and pessimistic. Those scenarios were constructed for the time-period of 2012-2050 using the Dinamica EGO software. Rondônia deforestation dataset was provided by the Agência Ambiental do Estado de Rondônia (Rondônia State Environmental Agency) and was used as input of the deforestation modeling. Based on this study results, we estimated that 32%, 37% and 47% of Rondônia’s native forest could be fully deforested by 2050 assuming the optimistic, business as usual and pessimistic scenarios, respectively. Regardless of the chosen scenario, we expect that deforestation will be spatially concentrated in Northern Rondônia in the next decades. The greatest concern, however, could be the integrity of the protected areas assuming the business as usual and/or pessimistic scenario. In addition, we expect a substantial increase of the forest fragmentation by 2050.

ABSTRACT Selective logging activities are commonly observed in the Brazilian Amazon and are responsible for high forest impact. In this study, selective logging detection techniques and the spatiotemporal extension of forests impacted by logging activities between 2003 and 2014 in portions of the states of Mato Grosso, Pará, and Rondônia were assessed using remotely sensing data. Based on results obtained, it was estimated that the overall accuracies are greater than 91% for techniques applied to detect forests impacted by selective logging in the study areas. Forests impacted by selective logging increased in Western state of Mato Grosso and Northern state of Rondônia, which indicates a stage high forest activity in these regions. In contrast, in Eastern state of Pará, a decrease in forests impacted by logging activities was observed, which indicates collapsed stage of logging activities resulting from deforestation and predatory logging in that region.

RESUMO Os plantios de soja têm aumentado ao Norte e Sul dos municípios de Rondônia na última década, entretanto a área plantada de soja tem sido estimada utilizando dados secundários, o que limita o entendimento da distribuição espaço temporal da soja. Este estudo buscou analisar e mapear os padrões espaciais de expansão da soja em Rondônia. O mapeamento de plantios de soja nos anos 2000, 2005, 2010 e 2014 foi feito a partir de uma técnica de classificação baseada na análise de mistura espectral de imagens Landsat e em uma árvore de decisão. A acurácia global, erros de omissão e comissão para o mapeamento da soja foram 93%, 23% e 0%, respectivamente. Os resultados mostraram que os maiores incrementos da área de soja ocorreram no estado de Rondônia entre os períodos de 2000-2005 e 2005-2010 (33,239 ha e 59,628 ha, respectivamente). A expansão das áreas de soja para o norte de Rondônia (25,627 ha) ocorreu em sua maioria no período de 2010 a 2014. Observou-se que 95,4% de todos os plantios de soja detectados em 2014 ocorreram em áreas com pelo menos nove anos de desmatamento. Além disso, encontramos evidências de que os plantios de soja estão contribuindo para o deslocamento de usos da terra prévios de antigas zonas de colonização, predominantemente pastos que foram empurrados para outras áreas de fronteiras da Amazônia, e lá exacerbando novos desmatamentos.

ABSTRACT Although soybean production has been increasing in the state of Rondônia in the last decade, soybean planted area has been estimated indirectly using secondary datasets, which has limited understanding of its spatiotemporal distribution patterns. This study aimed to map and analyze spatial patterns of soybean expansion in Rondônia. We developed a classification technique based on Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) derived from Landsat imagery and Decision Tree Classification to detect and map soybean plantations in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2014. The soybean classification map showed 93% global accuracy, 23% omission and 0% of commission errors for soybean crop fields. The greatest increases of soybean cropped area in the state of Rondônia were observed between 2000-2005 and 2005-2010 time-periods (33,239 ha and 59,628 ha, respectively), mostly located in Southern Rondônia. The expansion of soybean areas to Northern Rondônia (25,627 ha) has mostly occurred in the 2010-2014 time period. We estimate that 95.4% of all newly created soybean plantations, detected by 2014, were established on lands deforested nine or more years earlier. We concluded that the incursion of soybean plantations on lands deforested for other land uses (e.g. ranching) is contributing to their displacement (pastures) from older colonization zones toward more remote frontier areas of the Amazon, exacerbating new deforestation there.

RESUMO Matas de galeria possuem grande diversidade genética e desempenham importantes funções ecológicas, como a proteção das nascentes, controle da erosão e funcionam como filtros retendo poluentes. A serapilheira, que pode ser usada como um indicativo de produtividade ecológica é amplamente coletada por meio de coletores que são distribuídos aleatoriamente em um ecossistema florestal. No entanto, a distribuição da vegetação pode apresentar dependência espacial, logo, a produtividade da serapilheira pode ser mapeada utilizando técnicas geoestatísticas o que permite a delimitação de zonas de manejo. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficiência de métodos geoestatísticos na delimitação de zonas de manejo da produtividade de serapilheira em uma área de mata de galeria. O estudo foi realizado na mata de galeria do córrego Lava-pés (3 ha) em Ipameri - GO, utilizando-se 60 coletores (cada um com 0,33 m² de área e suspensos a 0,65 m do solo) instalados em uma malha regular georreferenciada de 32 x 32 m. A serapilheira foi coletada mensalmente de dezembro de 2011 a novembro de 2012. Todas as amostras foram separadas manualmente nas frações: folhas (FF), ramos (FR - galhos e cascas), e estruturas reprodutivas (FER - flores, frutos e sementes) e foram expressas em kg ha-1. Realizou-se a análise estatística descritiva e geoestatística dos dados. A produtividade de serapilheira para a FF e o total apresentou forte dependência espacial. A FR e a FER apresentaram efeito pepita puro. O mapa dos valores de serapilheira total obtido pelo método de interpolação Krigagem indicaram áreas de produtividade variando de 900 a 10.900 Kg ha-1ano, evidenciando alta variabilidade na área. Foi possível por meio da técnica de interpolação krigagem delimitar zonas de manejo da produtividade de serapilheira na mata de galeria estudada, o que permitiu o manejo florestal específico da serapilheira.

ABSTRACT The gallery forests have great genetic diversity and important ecological functions, such as protecting the headwaters, controlling erosion, and functioning as buffer zones and filtering chemicals. Litterfall, which can be used as an indicator of ecological productivity, is widely collected using litter traps that are randomly distributed in a forest plot. However, vegetation distribution may present spatial dependence, thus the yield of the litterfall can be mapped using geostatistical techniques allowing the delineation of management zones. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of geostatistical methods using the zoning management productivity of litterfall on a gallery forest in central Brazil. The study was conducted on the gallery forest along the 'Lava-pés' stream in Goiás State, Brazil where the experimental site (3 ha) was structured in a grid of 60 litterfall traps, each of 0.33 m2 held 0.65 m above the ground, georeferenced, spaced at 32 x 32 m intervals. Litterfall was monthly collected from December 2011 to November 2012. All litterfall samples were manually separated into three fractions: leaves (LE), branch bark (BB), and reproductive parts (RP) and they were expressed in kg ha-1. Statistical analyses consisted of data description and geostatistics. The litterfall of for LE and total showed strong spatial dependence. The BB and RP showed pure nugget effect. The total litterfall maps obtained by the Kriging interpolation method indicated zones in the map ranging from 900 to 10,900 kg ha-1 per yr. The kriging interpolation technique delineate management zones of productivity in the gallery forest litterfall studied, which allowed the specific forest management of litterfall.

No presente estudo, foi realizada uma análise temporal do uso e da cobertura da terra na região semiárida de Sergipe. Para tanto, foram utilizadas imagens dos satélites Landsat-5 TM e Landsat-8 OLI, adquiridas nos anos de 1992, 2003 e 2013. Utilizou-se o algoritmo da máxima verossimilhança, que possibilitou a classificação de seis classes de uso e de cobertura da terra. Para validação dos dados, foi usada uma imagem Spot-5, de alta resolução espacial, como referência de dados para as classes de uso e de cobertura escolhidas. Os resultados indicam um aumento de mais de 26% do desmatamento da vegetação nativa na área de estudo. A vegetação da Caatinga foi a mais impactada, a maioria convertida em novas pastagens. Além disso, observou-se que o aumento do desmatamento na área de estudo ocasionou também uma redução da Caatinga preservada e da regeneração florestal.

This study performed a temporal analysis of the land use and coverage in the semiarid region of Sergipe. We used Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-8 OLI satellite images acquired in 1992, 2003 and 2013. The maximum likelihood algorithm was used to detect six classes of land use and land coverage. We used a high spatial resolution Spot-5 scene as reference data to validate the assigned land use and coverage classification. Our results indicate that deforestation of native vegetation increased approximately 26% in the study area. The Caatinga vegetation was the most impacted, mostly converted to pastureland. In addition, it was observed that the deforestation increase in the study area negatively affected the preserved Caatinga secondary regrowth.

RESUMOA infraestrutura para exploração florestal é fundamental nas atividades de exploração madeireira, mas responde por grande parte dos impactos ambientais dessa atividade. O presente estudo aplicou e testou cinco técnicas de processamento digital de imagens orbitais com três resoluções espaciais distintas para a detecção de estradas e pátios florestais construídos em áreas sob manejo florestal sustentável na Floresta Nacional do Jamari, estado de Rondônia. Os resultados mostraram que o NDVI e a Análise de componentes principais apresentaram a melhor acurácia global nas resoluções espaciais de 5 e 10 metros e na de 30 metros, respectivamente. De maneira geral, a acurácia do produtor para a classe de interesse não foi alta, alcançando no máximo 39,2%, e índice Kappa de 0,38. A baixa performance das técnicas de geoprocessamento utilizadas na detecção de florestas exploradas seletivamente está relacionada às alterações ocorridas no dossel da floresta manejada, pouco perceptíveis em imagens de satélite.

ABSTRACTLogging lands (forest roads and log decks) are an underlying issue during selective logging activities, but they are responsible for most impacts on the forest. This study aimed to apply and assess the performance of five geoprocessing techniques on remotely sensed data using three different spatial resolutions to detect logging lands under forest management at the Jamari National Forest, state of Rondônia, Brazil. The research results showed that Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) presented the best overall accuracy using spatial resolutions of 5 and 10 meters, and 30 meters, respectively. Generally, the overall accuracy and Kappa statistics for the selectively logged forest classifications were not good (39.2% or lower, and 0.38 or lower, respectively). The low performance of the geoprocessing techniques is related to the subtle changes on the forest canopy cover under selective logging activities.

RESUMOA expansão das áreas de pastagens e de produção de grãos no estado de Rondônia se deu de forma acelerada na última década devido principalmente a incentivos fiscais e a alta demanda do mercado externo. Em consequência, graves processos de degradação da floresta se iniciaram. Este estudo objetivou analisar processos de fragmentação da floresta nos municípios de Corumbiara e Buritis, estado de Rondônia. Para tanto, foram utilizadas imagens Landsat 5 TM para classificar as áreas de floresta e não floresta. A avaliação da acurácia para a classificação supervisionada Maximum Likelihood indicou acurácia global de 91% e Kappa de 78%. Os resultados do cálculo de métricas indicam um aumento do retalhamento da paisagem ao longo da última década nos municípios, com aumento do efeito de borda, diminuição significativa da área da classe floresta e diminuição da conectividade das manchas de floresta. Assim, com base neste estudo, pôde ser observado um processo contínuo de aumento da fragmentação da floresta nativa nesses municípios.

ABSTRACTThe expansion of agriculture and pasture in Rondônia state was accelerated in the past decade due to fiscal incentives and higher external market demand. Consequently, serious forest degradation processes were initiated. The present study aims to analyze forest fragmentation in the municipalities of Corumbiara and Buritis. To this end, Landsat 5 TM images were used for forest and non-forest classification. The accuracy assessment for Maximum Likelihood supervised classification indicated an overall accuracy of 91% and Kappa of 78%. Results indicated an increase in the number of patches in the area of study in the past decade, with an increase in edge effects, significant reduction of forest class area, and a decrease in the connectivity of forest patches. Therefore, based on this study, a continuous increase in the fragmentation of native vegetation in these municipalities can be observed.

Resumo:O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da aplicação de modelos de análise de regressão e redes neurais artificiais (RNAs) na predição do volume de madeira e da biomassa acima do solo, da vegetação arbórea em área de cerradão. Volume de madeira e biomassa foram estimados com equações alométricas desenvolvidas para a área de estudo. Os índices de vegetação, como variáveis preditoras, foram estimados a partir de imagens do sensor LISS-III, e a área basal foi determinada por medições na floresta. A precisão das equações foi verificada pela correlação entre os valores estimados e observados (r), erro-padrão da estimativa (Syx) e gráfico residual. As equações de regressão para o volume de madeira total e do fuste (0,96 e 0,97 para r, e 11,92 e 9,72% para Syx, respectivamente) e para a biomassa (0,91 e 0,92 para r, e 22,73 e 16,80% para Syx, respectivamente) apresentaram bons ajustes. As redes neurais também apresentaram bom ajuste com o volume de madeira (0,99 e 0,99 para r, e 4,93 e 4,83% para Syx) e a biomassa (0,97 e 0,98 r, e 8,92 e 7,96% para Syx, respectivamente). A área basal e os índices de vegetação foram eficazes na estimativa do volume de madeira e biomassa para o cerradão. Os valores reais de volume de madeira e biomassa não diferiram estatisticamente dos valores estimados pelos modelos de regressão e redes neurais (χ2ns); contudo, as RNAs são mais acuradas.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of regression models and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting wood volume and aboveground biomass of arboreal vegetation in area of tall Cerrado (a forest, savanna-like vegetation). Wood volume and biomass were estimated with allometric equations developed for the studied area. The vegetation indices, as predictor variables, were estimated from LISS-III sensor imagery, and the basal area was determined from field measurements. Equation precision was verified by the correlation between estimated and observed values (r), standard error of estimate (Syx), and by the residual plot. The regression equations for total wood volume and bole volume (0.96 and 0.97 for r, and 11.92 and 9.72% for Syx, respectively), as well as for aboveground biomass (0.91 and 0.92 for r, and 22.73 and 16.80% for Syx, respectively) showed good adjustments. The neural networks also showed good adjustments for both wood volume (0.99 and 0,99 for r, and 4.93 and 4.83% for Syx) and biomass (0.97 and 0.98 for r, and 8.92 and 7.96% for Syx, respectively). Basal area and vegetation indices were effective in estimating wood volume and biomass for the tall cerrado vegetation. Measured wood volume and aboveground biomass did not differ statistically from the predicted values by both the regression models and neural networks (χ2ns); however, the ANNs are more accurate.

Estudos de ciclagem de nutrientes no bioma Caatinga podem contribuir para o melhor entendimento dos processos ecológicos nesse ecossistema. Dessa forma, o presente estudo buscou ampliar as informações sobre o aporte do material formador da serapilheira, sua composição química e velocidade de decomposição em uma área de Caatinga no município de Santa Luz, PI. A produção de serapilheira foi coletada mensalmente (dezembro de 2010 a novembro de 2011), utilizando-se 10 coletores. Parte do material coletado foi utilizada para análise de N, K, P, lignina e tanino. A decomposição foi avaliada utilizando litter bags. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que a redução da precipitação levou ao aumento da deposição de serapilheira, principalmente a fração folhas. O nitrogênio apresentou o maior aporte dentre os nutrientes. Os elevados teores de lignina e tanino na serapilheira da Caatinga reduzem a velocidade da decomposição da serapilheira.

Studies on nutrient cycling in the Caatinga biome can support a better understanding of the ecological processes in that ecosystem. This study aimed to improve information related to the amount of organic material for litter formation, its chemical composition and required time for decomposition in a study area located in the Caatinga biome, municipality of Santa Luz, Piaui state, Brazil. The litterfall production was monthly collected between December 2010 and November 2011 using 10 collectors. The collected material was partially used as samples for soil analysis (N, K, P, lignin and tannin). The decomposition was assessed using litter bags. Our results indicate that litter deposition increases as precipitation decreases, mainly the leaf fraction. The greatest soil nutrient content was Nitrogen. It seems that the high concentrations of lignin and tannin in the Caatinga litter were responsible for decreasing the decomposition rate of the leaf litter.

No presente estudo, foi avaliada a acurácia dos mapeamentos do desmatamento conduzidos pelo Programa de Monitoramento do Desflorestamento na Amazônia (PRODES) do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) e pela Secretaria de Estado do Desenvolvimento Ambiental (SEDAM), para o Estado de Rondônia, no período entre 2001 a 2011, utilizando imagens Landsat 5 TM. Com base nos resultados deste estudo, os mapeamentos conduzidos pela SEDAM e pelo PRODES-INPE apresentaram coeficientes Kappa similares, estimados em 0,89 e 0,87, respectivamente. Os dados do desmatamento dos sistemas PRODES e SEDAM revelaram um decréscimo nas taxas de desmatamento em todo o Estado de Rondônia no período de análise, embora os desmatamentos ilegais dentro de áreas protegidas tenham aumentado cerca de 400% entre 2002 e 2011. Assumindo-se esta tendência de desmatamento da última década, é possível afirmar que as terras indígenas e unidades de conservação (UC) em Rondônia serão os principais alvos de desmatamento e destruição nos próximos anos.

The goal of this study was to assess the accuracy of deforestation maps produced by the National Institute for Spatial Research (INPE) and the Rondônia State Secretariat of Environmental Development (SEDAM) for the state of Rondônia between 2001 and 2011. Our results show that the deforestation mappings conducted by SEDAM and PRODES-INPE present similar Kappa coefficients, which were estimated at 0.89 and 0.87, respectively. The deforestation datasets prepared by PRODES and SEDAM show a decrease in deforestation rates in Rondônia state in the study period. However, there was a significant increase in illegal deforestation (approximately 400% within the protected areas) in this period. Based on the deforestation trend observed in the past decade, we can affirm that forests inside protected areas are the main targets for deforestation in Rondônia state.
