RESUMO: Objetivou-se apresentar aspectos relevantes sobre o ambiente amazônico e como este impacta no conforto térmico de búfalos domésticos (Bubalus bubalis) criados na Amazônia Oriental. Adicionalmente, são apresentadas estratégias para monitoramento e mitigação do estresse térmico animal, a partir de resultados de pesquisa com a espécie. Apesar dos búfalos domésticos serem considerados animais adaptáveis, a exposição à intensa radiação solar provoca desconforto térmico. Essa condição é expressa em indicadores biofísicos, nas respostas metabólicas, endócrinas, comportamentais e nos padrões termográficos corporais. Assim, o monitoramento biometeorológico da produção é crucial para subsidiar tomadas de decisão em relação a estratégias de manejo ambiental, seleção genética de indivíduos termotolerantes e incremento do bem-estar animal. Por fim, o uso de sistemas silvipastoris pode auxiliar na oferta de maior conforto térmico, que é uma condição que impacta diretamente na produtividade de bubalinos de leite e carne, quando estes são criados em regiões tropicais, como na Amazônia Oriental.

ABSTRACT: This study presented relevant aspects about the Amazonian environment and how it impacts the thermal comfort of domestic buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) raised in the Eastern Amazon. Furthermore, strategies for monitoring and mitigating animal heat stress are presented, based on research results with the species. Although domestic buffaloes are considered adaptable animals, exposure to intense solar radiation causes thermal discomfort. This condition is expressed in biophysical indicators, in metabolic, endocrine, behavioral responses, and in body thermographic patterns. Therefore, the biometeorological monitoring of production is crucial to support decision-making regarding environmental management strategies, genetic selection of thermotolerant individuals, and increase in animal welfare. Lastly, the use of silvopastoral systems can help to provide higher thermal comfort, which is a condition that directly impacts the productivity of milk and meat buffaloes when they are raised in tropical regions, such as in the Eastern Amazon.

Abstract The forest component's growth and production are important to asses the technical feasibility of an integrated livestock production system (iLPF) with native species from the Amazon. The objective of this work was to analyze and select hypsometric and volumetric equations for Dipteryx odorata and analyze its silvicultural development in an iLPF system in the Lower Amazon. Data were collected in the municipality of Mojuí dos Campos, Pará, using dendrometric and qualitative variables from 240 cumaru trees in a 1ha plantation with 9 years of implantation, in a spacing of 5 m x 7 m. Six hypsometric models and nine volumetric models were adjusted. To select each equation, the following criteria were observed: adjusted coefficient of determination (R²aj) standard error of the estimate in percentage (Sxy%) mean percentage deviation (DMP), the significance of the parameters by the t-test, normality of the residuals by the Kolmogorov- Test Smirnov and graphical analysis of percentage residuals. The simple linear model was the most suitable for estimating the volume's total height and the Husch model.

Resumo O crescimento e a produção do componente florestal são importantes para a avaliação da viabilidade técnica em sistema de produção de pecuária integrada (iLPF) com espécies nativas da Amazônia. O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar e selecionar equações hipsométricas e volumétricas para Dipteryx odorata e analisar seu desenvolvimento silvicultural em sistema iLPF no Baixo Amazonas. Os dados foram coletados no município de Mojuí dos Campos, Pará, usando variáveis dendrométricas e qualitativas de 240 árvores de cumaru em um plantio de 1ha com 9 anos de implantação, em um espaçamento de 5 m x 7 m. Foram ajustados seis modelos hipsométricos e nove modelos volumétricos. Para selecionar cada equação foram observados os seguintes critérios: coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R²aj) erro padrão da estimativa em porcentagem (Sxy%) desvio médio percentual (DMP), significância dos parâmetros pelo Teste t, normalidade dos resíduos por meio do Teste Kolmogorov-Smirnov e análise gráfica dos resíduos percentuais. O modelo linear simples foi o mais adequado para estimar a altura total e o modelo de Husch para o volume.

ABSTRACT Watersheds are planning units because they are delimited by topographic divisions formed by a main river and its tributaries, in which water drainage is channeled into a course of greater water volume, such as the Amazon basin, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The objective of this work was to analyze the morphometry of the hydrographic sub-basin of the Curuá-Una River (SBHRM), that integrates the Curuá-Una hydrographic micro-region in western Pará, Brazil, and its surroundings. Data from abiotic variables integrated in a geographic information system were used to identify the areas that most need restauration using production systems such as agroforestry as part of a forest restoration process, necessary to land degradation in the sub-basin and its surroundings. It was found that the sub-basin of the Curuá-Una River has a more elongated shape, confirmed by the circularity index, compactness coefficient, and shape factor. It is a fifth order sub-basin with a densely branched drainage network with a low probability of flooding due to the predominance of undulating relief. The morphometric characteristics present conditions that can be used in anthropic areas integrated into production systems such as agroforestry. The existence of tree species such as andiroba, copaíba, and the Brazil nut tree in the Tapajós basin, as inventoried by the Project RADAMBRAZIL, must be included in agroforestry arrangements in the recovery of degraded areas in western Pará.

RESUMO A castanheira-da-amazônia (Bertholletia excelsa) é nativa da floresta amazônica e sua produção de frutos varia naturalmente com as condições climáticas. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar a variação temporal na produção de frutos da castanheira associada a variáveis climáticas, incluindo o forte El Nino de 2015/2016. O estudo foi realizado em parcelas permanentes de 9 ha de 2007 a 2018, uma localizada em floresta (12 anos de monitoramento) e a outra em transição floresta/savana (oito anos). Em total, monitoramos 205 castanheiras com diâmetro à altura do peito ≥ 50 cm. A produção anual de frutos foi relacionada a séries temporais (2005-2018) de dados climáticos (o Índice Oceânico Niño; e a precipitação e temperatura do ar de duas estações meteorológicas locais). A produção média por castanheira em 2017 foi oito vezes menor que em 2015 e duas vezes menor que a média geral nos dois sítios, e foi significativamente associada ao El Niño de 2015/2016, que causou aumento na temperatura máxima mensal e redução na precipitação regional, prolongando a estação seca de três para seis meses. Os anos com maior e menor produção média por castanheira foram os mesmos nos dois ambientes. A produção anual de frutos foi significativa e negativamente correlacionada com as anomalias térmicas ocorridas no terceiro semestre antes da colheita. Anos de maior produção foram relacionados com predominância de neutralidade ou do fenômeno La Niña em escala global, e aumento da precipitação em nível local. A relação entre produção de frutos e clima foi independente do ambiente local.

ABSTRACT The Brazil-nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) is native to the Amazon rainforest, and its fruit production varies naturally with climatic conditions. Our aim was to evaluate the temporal variation in Brazil-nut production associated with climatic variables, including the strong El Niño of 2015/2016. The study was carried out in two 9-ha permanent plots in the northeastern Brazilian Amazon from 2007 to 2018: one in forest (12-year monitoring) and the other in savannah/forest transition (eight years). Overall, we monitored fruit production of 205 trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 50 cm. Annual fruit production was related to temporal series (2005-2018) of climatic data (the Oceanic Niño Index; and precipitation and air temperature from two local meteorological stations). Average fruit production per tree in 2017 was eight times lower than in 2015 and two times lower than the general average for both sites, and was significantly associated to the El Niño of 2015/2016, that increased average maximum monthly temperature and reduced the precipitation in the region, extending the dry season from three to six months. Years with higher and lower fruit production per tree coincided in both sites. Annual fruit production was significantly and negatively correlated with thermal anomalies that occurred in the third semester prior to harvest monitoring. Years with higher production were related with predominance of neutrality or the La Niña phenomenon at the global scale, and higher rainfall at the local scale. The relationship of fruit production with climate was independent of the local habitat.

Resumo A Floresta Nacional do Tapajós vem prestando importante serviço ecossistêmico à sociedade desde a criação dessa Unidade de Conservação na Amazônia. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o perfil climático de temperatura do ar em Belterra apontando evidência de serviço ecossistêmico de regulação térmica prestado pela Flona Tapajós na Amazônia. Duas normais climatológicas disponibilizadas pelo Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) foram utilizadas (1961 a 1990 e 1981 a 2010). Na primeira série história a Flona Tapajós já existia e na segunda consolida-se o polo de grãos no município. Fez-se análise de variância no programa R para comparar médias, extremas (máximas e mínimas) e amplitudes térmicas. Verificou-se semelhança estatística no primeiro semestre nas duas séries temporais com médias de 24,6 °C e 25,2 °C, máximas de 29,4 °C e 29,9 °C e, mínimas de 20,6 e 21,2 °C, respectivamente. No segundo semestre, as médias passaram de 25,2 °C para 26,0 °C, as máximas de 31,2 °C para 31,6 °C e as mínimas de 20,4 °C para 21,2 °C com significância estatística em aumento térmico entre 1981 a 2010. Entre outubro a dezembro as madrugadas ficaram mais quentes, evidenciando reduções de serviço ecossistêmico em regulação térmica prestado pela Flona Tapajós que pode estar associado à consolidação do polo de grãos em Belterra.

Abstract The Tapajós National Forest (Flona Tapajós) has been providing important ecosystem services to society since the creation of this Conservation Unit in the Amazon. This study analyzed two climatic series from Belterra to identify possible effects on the thermal regime in the municipality as a function of the proximity of the Flona Tapajós and the consolidated grain production center in western Pará. Two climatological normal datasets from the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) were analyzed (1961-1990 and 1981-2010). Analysis of variance was used to compare averages, extremes (minimums and maximums), and thermal amplitudes. Average temperature was 24.6 °C in the first semester (1961-1990) and 25.2 °C (1981-2010), with maximums of 29.4 °C and 29.9 °C, and minimums of 20.6 and 21.2 °C, respectively. There were no statistical differences in these comparisons. In the second semester the averages increased to 25.2 °C and 26.0 °C, and were statistically different, with maximums of 31.2 °C and 31.6 °C and minimums of 20.4 °C and 21.2 °C, indicating different thermal regimes during 1981-2010. Additionally, from October to December the nights were warmer. The Flona Tapajós may have experienced a reduction in provision of ecosystem services, and the increase in minimum temperatures could be associated with grain production activities in the region.

Abstract Ruminant energy supplementation with vegetable oils or fats has been standing out worldwide and oil palm processing has been receiving growing interest. This study assessed the effect of supplementation with saturated and unsaturated fatty acids from the palm oil industry on the lipid profile of seminal plasma and of the sperm membrane, as well as on the morphological and functional characteristics of raw and cryopreserved buffalo semen. Twelve purebred Murrah bulls (Bubalus bubalis) were assigned to the experimental groups and fed diets for 120 days with no added lipids (CONT, four bulls), or with an extra amount of 3% lipids from crude palm oil (PALM, four bulls), or from palm oil deodorizer distillate (PODD, four bulls). Semen was collected and cryopreserved every 15 days. The lipid composition of membranes and semen quality were determined after collections. Lipid supplementation did not impact feed intake (P>0.05). Diet enrichment with PALM increased the linoleic acid (C18:2,ω6) in seminal plasma. Lipid supplementation did not increase the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the sperm membrane composition, but significantly increased the lignoceric acid (C24:0). Cryopreserved semen of the supplemented bulls presented higher progressive motility (60.2 vs. 67.9 vs. 65.2%; P<0.05) and sperm viability detected by eosin-nigrosin staining (61.1 vs. 69.4 vs. 67.8%; P<0.05). Palm oil reduced major sperm defects in both raw (12.2 vs. 9.3 vs. 13.2%; P<0.0001) and cryopreserved semen (12.4 vs. 9.4 vs. 11.2%; P<0.0001). The lipids added to the diet did not impact the population of spermatozoa with intact plasma and acrosomal membranes (PI-/PSA-), but significantly increased the percentage of spermatozoa with high mitochondrial potential (25.6 vs. 31.5 vs. 32.0%; P=0.008). The results suggest that lipid supplementation based on crude palm oil or palm oil deodorizer distillate can be safely used to feed buffalo bulls and may increase sperm attributes related to male fertility.

RESUMO Na Amazônia, o principal potencial de contribuição para os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), está no aproveitamento de resíduos da agroindústria para uso na construção civil, como alternativa de novos materiais sustentáveis. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o potencial uso de partículas de resíduos de açaí (Euterpe oleracea e Euterpe precatoria) caracterizando-as física, química, térmica e morfologicamente. Foram realizados ensaios de densidade por picnometria, verificação de teor de umidade, e dos teores de lignina, celulose e extrativos, de acordo com os parâmetros normativos da TAPPI 204, 211 e 222. O resultado da densidade média das partículas é de 1,49 g.cm-3, com teor de umidade variando de 2 a 6%. Em relação à composição química, observou-se maiores teores de lignina e extrativos, e redução de celulose em relação à outras fibras vegetais. Através da Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), observou-se a presença somente do endocarpo do caroço de açaí nas partículas de 8 e 14 Tyler, e maior predominância de fibras nas partículas de 48, 100 e 200 Tyler. O conhecimento das características físico-químicas das partículas de resíduo de açaí faz-se necessário para subsidiar etapas de processamento de compósitos com uso destes materiais. Além disso, a utilização de um resíduo como o caroço do açaí potencializa a redução dos impactos ambientais, fornecendo, principalmente para a construção civil, a possibilidade de produção de novos materiais mais ecológicos, gerando indicadores de sustentabilidade nas edificações da Amazônia.

ABSTRACT In the Amazon, the main potential for contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) lies in using agro industry waste in civil construction as an alternative for sustainable materials. In this context, this study aimed to assess the potential use of acai (Euterpe oleracea and Euterpe precatoria) waste particles to create composites that may be used in more sustainable buildings. Density assays were performed using picnometry. The moisture levels were measured and, lignin, cellulose and extractive contents were assessed according to the parameters of TAPPI 204, 211, and 222. The results showed that the mean particle density is 1.49 g.cm-3 and the moisture content ranged from 2 to 6%. Regarding chemical make-up, higher lignin and extractive contents were found, in addition to a reduction in cellulose compared to other plant fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of only the endocarp of açaí stone in particles of 8 and 14 Tyler and a higher prevalence of fibers in particles of 48, 100, and 200 Tyler. Knowing the characteristics and behaviors of açaí waste particles is important to lay basis for composite processing stages using this material. Moreover, the use of acai stones reduce the environmental impacts, allowing mainly civil construction to produce new, more ecological materials that lead to sustainability indicators in buildings of the Amazon.

RESUMO As palmeiras estão entre as espécies hiperdominantes na Amazônia e o tucumã (Astrocaryum vulgare Mart.) demanda de informações climáticas e fenológicas para subsidiar o planejamento estratégico e o manejo sustentável dessa palmacea nativa da região. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar as condições agrometeorológicas associadas às respostas fenológicas do tucumã por ser uma espécie que apresenta alto potencial econômico na produção de polpa dos frutos. Foram levantados dados meteorológicos correspondentes ao período em que foram realizadas as coletas de dados de fenologia no Banco de Germoplasma. Também, foram instalados sensores para monitorar a temperatura e a umidade relativa do ar onde eram observadas as fenofases. Foram realizadas análises para identificar respostas dos tucumanzeiros em função das condições agrometeorológicas na área de estudo. A precipitação pluvial, amplitude térmica e insolação apresentaram correlações positivas principalmente quanto aos percentuais de indivíduos com brácteas, de indivíduos com inflorescências e de indivíduos com inflorescências fecundadas. Nas fenofases de frutificação a precipitação pluvial e a umidade relativa do ar influenciaram nos percentuais de indivíduos com cachos de frutos imaturos e de indivíduos com cachos de frutos maduros. Temperaturas máximas elevadas comprometem a expressão da porcentagem de indivíduos com cachos verdes do tucumã. Os tucumanzeiros estavam em plena capacidade vegetativa durante as avaliações a campo, pois o NDVI manteve-se, dominantemente superior a 0,41 nos três anos analisados. As fenofases do tucumã demonstrando forte associação positiva com insolação, temperatura máxima e amplitude térmica.

ABSTRACT Palms are among the class of hyperdominant species in the Amazon region, and for the tucumã palm (Astrocaryum vulgare Mart.) demand of climatic and phenological information in order to support strategic planning and sustainable management of this palm species native to the Amazon basin. The objective of this work was to evaluate agrometeorological conditions associated to phenological responses of tucumã as a species that has high economic potential for fruit pulp production. Meteorological data were collected during the period in which data were also collected for the phenology of the germplasm bank. Sensors were installed to monitor temperature and air relative humidity to where they are observed as phenophases. Analyses were conducted to identify the responses of the tucumã stems in function of agrometeorological conditions of the study area. Precipitation, thermal amplitude, and insolation showed positive correlations principally with respect to the percent of stems with bracts, inflorescences, or with fertilized inflorescences. In the fruiting phenological phase precipitation and air relative humidity influenced the percentage of stems with fruit clusters that were immature and also ones with mature clusters. High maximum temperatures compromise the expression of the percentage of stems with green fruit clusters. The tucumã stems were photosynthesizing and carrying out metabolic processes at a very high rate during the study period based on the high Normalized Difference Vegetation Index which was superior to 0.41 during the three years of this study. The tucumã phenological phases, demonstrating a strong positive association with insolation, maximum temperature and thermal amplitude.

RESUMO. A pesquisa objetivou determinar o índice de conforto térmico mais adequado para búfalos criados na Amazônia Oriental, Pará, Brasil. Foram utilizados vinte búfalos Murrah. Foram registrados dados de variáveis climáticas e temperatura retal (TR), temperatura da superfície corporal (TSC) e frequência respiratória (FR), e foram calculados os índices: Índice de Temperatura e Umidade (ITU), Índice de Temperatura de Globo e Umidade (ITGU), Índice de Conforto Térmico de Benezra (ICB), Índice de Tolerância ao Calor de Ibéria (ITCI), Índice de Condições Climáticas de Conforto para búfalos geral (BCCCIg), efetivo (BCCCIe) e prático (BCCCIp) e Índice de Conforto Ambiental para búfalos geral (BECIg), efetivo (BECIe) e prático (BECIp), nos períodos da manhã e da tarde. Foram observados valores de ITU, ITGU, TR, TSC, FR, ICB, BCCCIg, BCCCIe, BCCCIp, BECIg, BECIe e BECIp mais elevados à tarde. Os maiores valores de ITCI foram encontrados de manhã. Houve correlação positiva entre as variáveis fisiológicas e ITU, ITGU, ITCI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIp, enquanto uma correlação negativa foi encontrada para TR e TSC com ITCI. Os índices THI, GTHI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIe, BCCCIp e BECIp são eficientes para avaliar o estado de conforto térmico dos búfalos na Amazônia Oriental.

ABSTRACT. This research aimed to determine the most appropriate thermal comfort index for buffaloes reared in the Eastern Amazon, Pará, Brazil. Twenty male Murrah buffaloes were used, and data on climate variables, rectal temperature (RT), body surface temperature (BST), and respiratory rate (RR) were recorded. Subsequently, the following indices were calculated: Temperature and Humidity Index (THI), Global Temperature and Humidity Index (GTHI), Benezra’s Thermal Comfort Index (BTCI), Ibéria’s Heat Tolerance Index (IHTI), the general, effective, and practical Buffalo Comfort Climatic Conditions Indices (BCCCIg, BCCCIe, and BCCCIp, respectively) and the general, effective, and practical Buffalo Environmental Comfort Indices (BECIg, BECIe, and BECIp, respectively) in the morning and afternoon. Higher values for THI, GTHI, RT, BST, RR, BTCI, BCCCIg, BCCCIe, BCCCIp, BECIg, BECIe, and BECIp were observed in the afternoon, and the highest IHTI values were found in the morning. A positive correlation was found among the physiological variables and THI, GTHI, BTCI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIe, BCCCIp, BECIp, while a negative correlation was found for RT and BST with IHTI. The indices THI, GTHI, BCCCIg, BECIg, BCCCIe, BECIe, BCCCIp, and BECIp were determined to be very efficient to assess the thermal comfort status of buffaloes under the conditions of the present research.

RESUMO. Este estudo avaliou os efeitos do clima no período seco do ano, na Ilha de Marajó, Brasil, sobre as respostas termorreguladoras de vinte búfalas, divididas entre o grupo com sombra (CS) e o grupo sem sombra (SS). Os dados sobre temperatura do ar (TA), umidade relativa do ar, velocidade do vento (VV), frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura retal (TR) e temperatura da superfície corporal (TSC) foram registradas às 6h, 10h, 14h, 18h e 22h. Foram calculados o índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU), índice de condições climáticas de conforto para búfalos prático (BCCCIp) e índice de conforto ambiental para búfalos prático (BECIp). Às 10h e 14 horas, a VV foi mais elevada. A FR dos animais, em ambos os tratamentos, diferiu apenas às 10h e 14h. Houve diferença na TR entre os tratamentos às 10h, 14h e 18h. Diferenças significativas foram observadas na TSC dos animais, em ambos os grupos, às 10h, 14h e 22h. O BECIp diferiu entre os grupos às 10h e às 14h, com valores maiores para o grupo SS. Os búfalos são propensos ao estresse térmico, particularmente entre 10h e 14h, quando são observados valores mais altos de TA, ITU e BCCCIp.

ABSTRACT. This research aimed to assess the effects of dry season climate variables on Marajó Island, Brazil, on the thermoregulatory responses of twenty female buffaloes, assigned to shaded (SD), and unshaded groups (US). Data on air temperature (AT), relative air humidity, wind velocity (WV), respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), and body surface temperature (BST) were recorded at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. The temperature and humidity index (THI), practical buffalo comfort climatic conditions index (BCCCIp), and practical buffalo environmental comfort index (BECIp) were calculated. At 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., WV was the highest. The RR of animals in both treatments differed only at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A difference in RT between treatments was seen at 10 a.m., 2 a.m., and 6 p.m. Significant changes were seen in the BST of animals in both groups at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 10 p.m. BECIp was different between the groups at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with higher values for the US group. Buffaloes are prone to thermal stress, particularly between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the highest values of AT, THI, and BCCCIp was observed.

Resumo O objetivo neste trabalho foi analisar a dinâmica temporal da pegada hídrica de oito cultivares de soja, plantadas na região do Oeste do Pará. Foram utilizados dados meteorológicos correspondentes ao período de 2009 a 2014 para calcular as taxas evapotranspiratórias da cultura. Como a Pegada Hídrica é subdividida em verde, azul e cinza e, na região os cultivos não são irrigados contabilizou-se apenas a verde e a cinza. A PHverde foi estimada considerando-se o total de água consumida durante o ciclo de cada cultivar. A PHcinza foi avaliada utilizando como fator contaminante em corpos hídricos o composto nitrato que está presente nos fertilizantes nitrogenados, conforme as concentrações aceitáveis pelo CONAMA 357/2005. Considerou-se dois valores para as doses de N, sendo 30 kg ha-1 com base na adubação descrita na literatura, bem como o N existente nas formulações (2:20:20) dos adubos vendidos na região, sendo 2 kg ha-1 o máximo utilizado na adubação de cobertura. Entre as oito cultivares analisadas, em termos de indicador de baixa pegada hídrica, as cultivares BRS 278 RR; BRS 325 RR e BRS 333 RR foram as mais expressivas no polo de grãos no oeste do Pará, evidenciando o uso eficiente da água disponível em todos os anos/safras analisados. A soja produzida no oeste do Pará possui baixa pegada hídrica cinza. Todavia, os valores de redução da produtividade em anos safra na região comprometem a pegada hídrica verde pela sojicultura na região, evidenciando que esse indicador deve ser analisado considerando as especificidades de cada cultivar de soja. O valor da pegada hídrica total estimada neste trabalho foi inferior aos obtidos na literatura, reforçando a importância de estimar a Pegada Hídrica (PH) como indicador de uso consuntivo de água em cultivos de grãos na Amazônia.

Abstract This study analyzed the time dynamics of the water footprint of eight soybean cultivars planted in the Western Pará, Amazon. Meteorological data between 2009 and 2014 were used to calculate the crop’s evapotranspiration rates. Since the water footprint is subdivided into green, blue, and grey, and the crops are not irrigated in the region, only the green and grey footprints were used. WFgreen (water footprint green) was estimated considering the total amount of water consumed during the cycle of each cultivar. WFgrey was assessed using the nitrate present in nitrogen fertilizers as contaminating factor in water bodies according to the concentrations accepted by CONAMA 357/2005. Two N dose values were considered, i.e., 30 kg ha-1 based on fertilizer values tested in the literature and the N present in the formulations (2:20:20) of the fertilizers sold in the region, while the maximum used in top dressing is 2 kg ha-1. Among the eight cultivars analyzed, C1 had the smallest water footprint, which shows the efficient use of the water available in every year/harvest analyzed. The total water footprint presented in this study highlights the importance of the methodology to estimate the consumptive use of water in grain production centers. The soybean produced in western Pará has a small grey water footprint, but the cultivars must be highly productive to reduce the green water footprint of soy farming in the region. The definition of the water footprint aids in the strategic planning of the management of water resources in grain production areas in the Amazon.

ABSTRACT: The system of differential equations proposed by Oltjen et al. [1986, named Davis Growth Model (DGM)] to represent cattle growth has been parameterized with data from Bos taurus (British) and Bos indicus (Nellore) breeds. The DGM has been successfully used for simulation and decision support in the United States. However, the effect of about 30 years of genetic improvement and the use of different breeds may affect the model parameter values, which also may need to be re-estimated for crossbred animals. The aim of this study was to estimate parameter values and confidence intervals for the DGM with growth and body composition data from Zebu crossbred animals. Confidence intervals and asymptotic distribution were generated through nonparametric bootstrap with data from a field experiment conducted in Brazil. The parameters showed normal probability distribution for most scenarios. The rate constant for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis had a minimum increase of 156 % and the maximum of 389 %, compared to the original values and the maintenance requirement had a minimum increase of 126 % and maximum of 160 % compared to the original values. Lower limits of 95 % confidence intervals for the parameters related to maintenance and protein accretion rates were higher than the original estimates of the DGM, evidencing genetic differences of the Zebu crossbred animals in relation to the original DGM parameters.

A bacia amazônica detém uma grande quantidade de água que deve ser conservada para atender as necessidades desta e das futuras gerações. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar condições físico-químicas e biológicas em águas superficiais do Rio Tapajós como indicadores da conservação de Floresta Nacional na Amazônia. Para a tomada de decisão quanto ao período de coleta levou-se em consideração apoio logístico e financeiro, sendo possível as coletas na época de menor oferta pluvial com base em informações climáticas na Flona e seu entorno. As coletas no rio Tapajós ocorreram em áreas de influência quanto ao uso e ocupação do solo. Foram realizadas avaliações no local, bem como análises em laboratório. Os resultados apontaram que dezembro de 2012 foi mais chuvoso em relação a climatologia. Os resultados do Índice de Qualidade de Água (IQA) indicaram o predomínio na qualidade "boa" a "ótima", nas quais as faixas variaram entre 70 < IQA < 90 e 90 < IQA <100, totalizando 70,0% das amostras coletadas. Os balneários de Alter do Chão e Pindobal foram os que apresentaram valores elevados de coliformes termotolerantes, possivelmente devido os efeitos antrópicos que poderiam ser mitigados com práticas de turismo adequadas. O maior IQA e a maior transparência da água, identificados próximo a Tauarí, evidenciaram efeitos mínimos nas águas superficiais pela ação antrópica nessa localidade. Conclui-se que os corpos hídricos são sensíveis a alterações na cobertura da terra e estas podem ameaçar à manutenção de áreas de uso conservacionista.

The Amazon Basin has a large amount of water that must be conserved to meet the needs of this and future generations. This study evaluated evidence of the effects of human disturbance in the Tapajos National Forest and its surroundings using physicochemical and biological variables in surface waters as indicators. In order to accomplish this, we first analyzed the data series of precipitation in the region. Samples were collected from the Tapajos River in areas influenced by land use and occupation. We made on-site assessments and collected samples for laboratory analysis. Rainfall in December 2012 was higher than the climatology indicated. The results of the Water Quality Index (WQI) indicated the predominance of the "good" to "great"; its values ranged between 70 < WQI < 90 and 90 < WQI < 100, in 70.0 % of the samples collected. The balnearies Alter do Chão and Pindobal had the highest levels of fecal coliform, possibly due to anthropogenic effects that could be mitigated by adequate tourist practices. The highest WQI and greater transparency of the water near Tauari, showed minimal effects of human activities in nearby surface waters. It is concluded that water bodies are sensitive to changes in land use and those changes may threaten the maintenance of conservation areas.
