Resumo Com o objetivo de estabelecer uma ligação entre a história evolutiva e os atributos fotoquímicos, medidas de fluorescência da clorofila (Chl) a foram feitas em Cattleya warneri, C. shofieldiana e C. harrisoniana expostas à alta irradiância por 5, 35 e 120 min (T5, T35 e T120, respectivamente). As seguintes questões são abordadas: (1) O aumento da dissipação de energia é suficiente para contrabalançar o excesso de energia que impulsiona a fotossíntese em diferentes tempos de exposição à alta irradiância? (2) Existe influência da incidência e duração da radiação luminosa em espécies de Cattleya a pleno sol, em comparação com espécies de Cattleya submetidas a baixa irradiância? A maior fluorescência variável relativa no ponto J (Vj) seguida do menor rendimento quântico do transporte de elétrons (ψEo) indicam o acúmulo de Quinona A (QA) reduzida proporcionalmente ao tempo de exposição às manchas solares em C. Waeneri. Os maiores valores de índice de desempenho (PIABS) e do índice de plasticidade em C. schofieldiana indicam maior eficiência na modulação do aparato fotossintético em resposta às manchas solares. C. harrisoniana apresenta menor índice de plasticidade, supressão da fluorescência máxima (Fm) e nenhuma recuperação de PIABS após exposição às manchas solares. Este estudo evidencia a importância da plasticidade fisiológica na distribuição geográfica atual de Cattleya em resposta a pulsos de luz em espécies derivadas de habitats fragmentados e a manutenção do sombreamento para espécies de clados mais primitivos.

Abstract In order to establish a link between the evolutionary history and the photochemical attributes, measurements of chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence were made in Cattleya warneri, C. shofieldiana and C. harrisoniana exposed to high irradiance for 5, 35, and 120 min (hereafter referred to as treatments T5, T35, and T120, respectively). The following questions are addressed: (1) Is the increased energy dissipation enough to counterbalance the excess energy that drives photosynthesis at different times of high irradiance exposure? (2) Is there an influence of the incidence and duration of light radiation on Cattleya species in full sunlight, compared to Cattleya species submitted to low irradiance? Higher relative variable fluorescence at the J-step (Vj) values followed by the lower quantum yield of electron transport (ψEo) indicate the accumulation of reduced Quinone A (QA) proportionally of sunflecks exposure time in C. warneri. The higher performance index (PIABS) and plasticity index values in C. schofieldiana indicate higher efficiency in modulating the photosynthetic apparatus under sunflecks. C. harrisoniana shows the lowest plasticity index, suppression of maximum fluorescence (Fm), and no recovery of PIABS after sunflecks. This study evidences the importance of physiological plasticity in the current geographic distribution of Cattleya in response to light pulses in species derived from fragmented habitats and the maintenance of shade to species of more primitive clades.

RESUMO: A toracoscopia está substituindo as biópsias pulmonares abertas por ser menos invasiva. Usualmente a técnica é feita utilizando três portais e ligaduras feitas intra corporalmente. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a viabilidade e eficácia de uma nova ligadura com alça pré-amarrada e propor uma estratégia de acesso toracoscópico com dois portais para realizar biópsia pulmonar em pacientes com menos de 5kg. Dez coelhos foram posicionados em decúbito dorsal. A biópsia pulmonar por toracoscopia total foi feita pela abordagem combinada transdiafragmática e abordagem intercostal direita. Uma nova ligadura pré-amarrada foi colocada para realizar uma biópsia do lobo pulmonar caudal. Não foi realizada insuflação da cavidade torácica. O tempo total de cirurgia foi de 41,4 ± 14,5 min. Os procedimentos foram realizados sem complicações que impedissem o escorregamento ou aperto do nó ou que o soltassem após a biópsia pulmonar; não houve nenhuma intercorrência grave durante o procedimento cirúrgico. As amostras coletadas tinham tamanho médio 1x0,64x0,45 cm e foram consideradas satisfatórias de acordo com a avaliação histopatológica. As radiografias de tórax feitas antes e depois das cirurgias foram comparadas e não mostraram pneumotórax ou hemotórax. A necropsia confirmou que não ocorreu falha do nó no local da biópsia. Conclui-se que uso da nova ligadura com alça pré-amarrada é uma técnica segura e eficaz, evitando problemas com o tamanho limitado da cavidade torácica em pacientes pequenos.

ABSTRACT: Thoracoscopy is replacing open lung biopsies because it is less invasive, usually the technique is done using three portals and intracorporeal suture technique. This study described the feasibility and efficacy of a novel pre tied loop ligature and to propose a thoracoscopic access strategy with two portals to perform lung biopsy in patients under 5 kg. Ten rabbits were positioned in dorsal recumbency. Total thoracoscopic lung biopsy was performed using a combined transdiaphragmatic approach and a right intercostal approach. A pre tied loop ligature was placed to perform a caudal lung lobe biopsy. Insufflation of the thoracic cavity was not performed. The total surgery time was 41.4 ± 14.5 min. The procedure was carried out free of complications that prevented slippage or tightening the knot or that made it come loose after the lung biopsy; there was no serious complication during the surgical procedure. The samples obtained averaged 1x0.64x0.45 cm (Length, Width, Depth) and were considered satisfactory according to the histopathologic evaluation. Thorax radiographs taken before and after the surgeries were compared and showed no pneumothorax or hemothorax. Necropsy confirmed no knot failure occurred at the biopsy site. The use of the novel pre tied loop ligature is a safe and effective technique, avoiding problems with the limited size of the thoracic cavity in small patients.

ABSTRACT OBJETIVE To map the international literature on Permanent Health Education initiatives to care for people with obesity. METHODS In total, six databases were searched without any language or publication period restriction according to the Joana Briggs Institute manual for evidence synthesis and the Prisma extension for scoping reviews (Prisma-ScR). Articles were independently analyzed by four reviewers and data, by two authors, which were then analyzed and discussed with our research team. RESULTS After screening 8,780 titles/abstracts and 26 full texts, 10studies met our eligibility criteria. We extracted data on methodologies, themes, definitions of obesity, outcomes, and gaps. Most initiatives came from North American countries without free or universal health systems and lasted a short period of time (70%), had multidisciplinary teams (70%), and addressed sub-themes on obesity approaches (90%). Results included changes in participants’ understanding, attitude, and procedures (80%) and gaps which pointed to the sustainability of these changes (80%). CONCLUSION This review shows the scarce research in the area and a general design of poorly effective initiatives, with traditional teaching methodologies based on information transmission techniques, the understanding of obesity as a disease and a public health problem, punctual actions, disciplinary fragmentation alien to the daily work centrality, and failure to recognize problems and territory as knowledge triggers and to focus on health care networks, line of care, the integrality of care, and food and body cultures.

Resumo Este artigo objetiva caracterizar as transferências financeiras no âmbito do Bloco da Atenção Básica para os municípios do estado de São Paulo, no período entre 2011 e 2017, e sua relação com a mudança de modelo de atenção na Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS). Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório, de natureza quantitativa e de corte longitudinal retrospectivo. Foram analisadas transferências ocorridas no âmbito do Piso da Atenção Básica Variável (PAB Variável), agregadas segundo vinculação com mudança de modelo. Também foram considerados cobertura de Estratégia Saúde da Família (ESF), número de visitas domiciliares e o percentual de municípios que aderiram ao Programa de Melhoria do Acesso de Qualidade da AB (PMAQ). Os resultados indicam a relevância que os Incentivos para mudança de modelo assumiram no financiamento da atenção básica no estado de São Paulo, em especial para municípios de pequeno porte, sugerindo o interesse da gestão municipal em implementar as medidas propostas. Contudo, constatam-se obstáculos para a identificação de mudança das práticas, de forma que o modelo de atenção em vigência não fica devidamente explicitado, a partir dos indicadores analisados. Conclui-se a necessidade de complementar a utilização do financiamento como dispositivo indutor de mudança de modelo com processos avaliativos voltados, especificamente, para a consolidação da APS abrangente.

Abstract This article aims to characterize financial transfers within the scope of the Primary Care Block to the municipalities of the state of São Paulo, in the period between 2011 and 2017, and its relationship with the health care model change in Primary Health Care (PHC). This is a descriptive and exploratory study, of quantitative nature and with a retrospective longitudinal section. Transfers that occurred within the scope of the Variable Primary Care Floor (Variable PCF) were analyzed, aggregated according to its link with the model change. Family Health Strategy (FHS) coverage, number of home visits, and the percentage of municipalities that adhered to the Program for Access and Quality Improvement in Primary Care (PMAQ) were also considered. The results indicate the relevance of the Incentives for model change in the financing of primary health care in the state of São Paulo, especially for small municipalities, suggesting the interest of these municipalities in implementing the proposed measures. However, there are obstacles to identifying changes in practices, thus the current health care model is not properly explained from the analyzed indicators. In conclusion, complementing the use of funding as a model change-inducing device with evaluative processes specifically aimed at consolidating comprehensive PHC is needed.

ABSTRACT This essay sought to discuss the role of patients and families in quality of care and patient safety. Traditionally, the role of health professionals – especially physicians – has been predominant in discussing and defining what constitutes high-quality health care. However, other actors have been recognized in the contemporary debate on the quality of care and, in particular, patient safety and centrality of care. The patient’s role in the quality of care and even their protagonism in identifying the main problems in the provision of care and how to contribute to safer care are highlighted. Initially, discusses the role of patients and relatives in the quality of care and patient safety. Then, the factors that influence and hinder their participation are discussed. Finally, strategies for increasing patient participation are proposed. Patients and families can play an essential role in improving the quality of health care and patient safety. However, they must be actively involved in making this happen, with their contributions considered in an environment favorable to a just safety culture.

RESUMO Este ensaio procurou discutir o papel dos pacientes e das famílias na qualidade dos cuidados e na segurança do paciente. Tradicionalmente, o papel dos profissionais de saúde – especialmente, dos médicos – tem sido predominante na discussão e na definição do que constitui um cuidado de saúde de alta qualidade. Entretanto, outros atores foram reconhecidos no debate contemporâneo sobre a qualidade do atendimento e, em particular, sobre a segurança do paciente e a centralidade do atendimento. O papel dos pacientes na qualidade do atendimento e até mesmo o seu protagonismo na identificação dos principais problemas presentes na prestação de cuidados e em como contribuir para um atendimento mais seguro são destacados. Inicialmente, discute-se o papel dos pacientes e seus familiares na qualidade do atendimento e na segurança do paciente. Em seguida, são discutidos os fatores que influenciam e dificultam a sua participação. Finalmente, são propostas estratégias para aumentar a participação dos pacientes. Pacientes e familiares podem desempenhar um papel essencial na melhoria da qualidade dos cuidados de saúde e da segurança do paciente. Entretanto, eles devem estar ativamente envolvidos para que isso ocorra, com suas contribuições consideradas em um ambiente favorável a uma cultura de segurança justa.

Resumo Embora a exposição à radiação solar tenha forte impacto no conforto das pessoas, estações de trabalho são frequentemente posicionadas junto às janelas. Modelos de ajuste solar vêm sendo desenvolvidos para incluir o impacto da radiação solar no conforto térmico, o que não é abordado nos modelos de Fanger e Adaptativo. Entretanto, esses modelos apresentam diferenças em seus procedimentos de cálculo, as quais não foram amplamente investigadas. Esse estudo teve como objetivo verificar divergências nos resultados de conforto térmico através da aplicação de diferentes modelos de ajuste solar, considerando uma pessoa sentada próximo à fachada envidraçada em um escritório. Dados ambientais foram obtidos por simulação térmica no EnergyPlus para um clima temperado no Brasil. Observaram-se diferenças significativas nos resultados obtidos para um mesmo espaço. Por exemplo, a diferença horária máxima no PMV entre os modelos de ajuste solar foi 1,7e a MRT foi até 17,6 ºCmaior do que o valor médio calculado pelo EnergyPlus. Embora os resultados não tenham sido confrontados com dados de medição ou percepção térmica de pessoas em um ambiente real, as limitações e vantagens de cada modelo de ajuste solar foram analisadas numericamente, ampliando as discussões sobre a necessidade de ajuste solar e as consequências da escolha entre os modelos.

Abstract Although solar radiation exposure strongly impacts people's thermal comfort, workstations are frequently positioned close to glazed façades. Solar adjustment models have been developed to include the solar radiation impact on people's thermal comfort, which the Fanger and Adaptative models do not address. Nonetheless, those models present differences in their calculation procedures, which have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to verify differences in thermal comfort results by applying various solar adjustment models of thermal comfort indices for a person sitting close to a highly glazed façade in an office room. The analyses were based on indoor environment data from computer thermal simulations in EnergyPlus for a temperate climate in Brazil. The results for the same room demonstrated significant differences. For example, the hourly difference between the solar-adjustment models reached 1.7 in PMV, and the MRT was up to 17.6 ºC higher than the mean result calculated through EnergyPlus. The need for solar radiation incidence control is also reinforced. Although the results were not compared with measurement data or people's thermal perception, the limitations and advantages of each solar adjustment model were numerically analysed, broadening the discussions about the solar adjustment models and the consequences of the choices among them.

Resumen Nasutitermes corniger es una termita arbórea que causa daños económicos en las zonas urbanas, y su control es mediante insecticidas químicos. Una alternativa para el control de insectos es el uso de hongos entomopatógenos y extractos de plantas, o el efecto sinérgico de la asociación de estos. Se examinó la toxicidad de los extractos acuosos e hidroetanólicos de Agave sisalana sobre los aspectos biológicos de los hongos Cordyceps farinosa, C. fumosorosea y C. javanica y la acción de los extractos y su efecto sinérgico sobre N. corniger. Se evaluó el efecto de los extractos sobre hongos por germinación, esporulación y crecimiento micelial de los hongos en medio Sabouraud mediante el estudio de aspectos biológicos bajo condiciones de laboratorio y se examinó el control de N. corniger, por ingestión de extractos y de la asociación extracto y hongo sobre papel de filtro, siendo el porcentaje de mortalidad de soldados y obreras de la termita diaria. En general, los extractos resultaron inofensivos para los hongos a concentraciones de 10, 25, 50, 100 y 200 mg.mL-1. Los extractos demostraron acciones termiticidas a las concentraciones ensayadas, provocando la mortalidad de alrededor del 100% de los trabajadores después del tercer y sexto día (LC50: 0.778 a 0.803 mg.mL-1) y del 100% de los soldados entre el cuarto y séptimo días (LC50: 0.146 a 0.956 mg.mL-1). La asociación de los extractos con C. farinosa ESALQ1355 fue más eficiente para inducir la mortalidad en N. corniger. Estos resultados demostraron la eficiencia in vitro de los extractos de sisal en el control de las termitas de N. corniger, solas o en combinación con hongos, lo que sugiere su potencial utilidad conjunta en el control biológico de plagas de insectos.

Abstract Nasutitermes corniger is an arboreal termite that causes economic damage in urban areas, and its control is for chemical insecticides. An alternative for insect control is the use of entomopathogenic fungi and plant extracts, or the synergistic effect of the association of these. The toxicity of aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts of Agave sisalana on the biological aspects of the fungal Cordyceps farinosa, C. fumosorosea and C. javanica and the action of the extracts and their synergistic effect on N. corniger was examined. The effect of the extracts on fungi was evaluated by germination, sporulation and mycelial growth of fungi in Sabouraud medium through the study of biological aspects under laboratory conditions; and control of N. corniger were examined, by ingestion of extracts and of the association extract plus fungus on filter paper, being the percentage of mortality of soldiers and workers of the termite daily. In general, the extracts were inoffensive to the fungi at concentrations 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg.mL-1. The extracts demonstrated termiticidal actions at concentrations tested, causing the mortalities about 100% of the workers after the third and sixth days (LC50: 0.778 to 0.803 mg.mL-1) and 100% of the soldiers between the fourth and seventh days (LC50:0.146 to 0.956 mg.mL-1). The association of the extracts with C. farinosa ESALQ1355 was more efficient in inducing the mortality in N. corniger. These results demonstrated the efficiency in vitro of the sisal extracts in controlling N. corniger termites, alone or in combination with fungi, suggesting their potential joint usefulness in the biological control of insect pests.

ABSTRACT This study aims to comparatively analyze the volume and flows for hospital admissions before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 112 g100 municipalities, which are characterized by having more than 80,000 inhabitants, low income, and high socioeconomic vulnerability. Data from the SUS Hospital Information System regarding hospitalizations of adults (age ≥ 18 years) in the period 2017-2020. Hospitalizations were classified according to type of admission or specialty of treatment in the following categories: elective, urgency/emergency, clinical, surgical, obstetric, and oncological treatment. Elective hospitalizations showed a greater reduction in volume in 2020 compared to the previous year, probably due to the measures adopted to minimize the risks of contagion and prioritization of care to severe patients by COVID-19. Considering the place of hospitalization, no significant changes were observed in relation to the referral of residents of g100 municipalities to other municipalities. However, there was differentiation between localities in which regionalization in health works in a more appropriate way, and others where there is a scarcity of resources or need for more effective planning and management.

RESUMO Este estudo objetivou analisar comparativamente o volume e os fluxos para internações hospitalares antes e durante o primeiro ano da pandemia da Covid-19 nos 112 municípios g100. Esses municípios caracterizam-se por ter mais de 80 mil habitantes, baixa renda e alta vulnerabilidade socioeconômica. Foram utilizados dados do Sistema de Informações Hospitalares do Sistema Único de Saúde referentes ao período 2017-2020. Selecionaram-se as internações de adultos (idade ≥ 18 anos), que foram classificadas segundo tipo de admissão ou especialidade do tratamento nas seguintes categorias: eletivas ou urgência/ emergência; tratamento clínico, cirúrgico, obstétrico e oncológico. As internações eletivas apresentaram maior redução no volume em 2020 em relação ao ano anterior devido às medidas adotadas para minimizar os riscos de contágio e priorização do cuidado aos pacientes grave por Covid-19. Não foram observadas alterações significativas em relação ao local de realização das internações de residentes de municípios g100. Contudo, no g100, observou-se diferenciação entre localidades nas quais a regionalização em saúde funciona de forma mais adequada, e em outras onde há escassez de recursos ou necessidade de planejamento e gestão mais efetivos.

RESUMO Os ensaios de progênies constituem estratégias de conservação genética ex situ e também de melhoramento genético, pois permitem selecionar genótipos de melhor qualidade e elevada produtividade. No entanto, o melhoramento genético florestal não tem sido devidamente aplicado para espécies nativas da região Amazônica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar se progênies de Parkia multijuga possuem desempenho silvicultural diferenciado e se é possível agrupá-las em diferentes classes de desempenho. O experimento foi instalado no delineamento de blocos casualizados com 14 progênies, sendo, ao total,18 mudas por cada progênie plantadas em seis blocos (252 plantas). Três anos após o plantio foram avaliados os caracteres: diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP), altura total, altura do fuste, diâmetro da copa, comprimento da copa, área de copa, proporção de copa, grau de esbeltez (GE), índice de abrangência (IA), índice de saliência (IS), ocorrência de bifurcação, percentual de indivíduos com fuste retilíneo e o estado fitossanitário. Foram também calculados: a sobrevivência, o incremento médio anual em altura e diâmetro e o índice de resposta integrada (IRI = sobrevivência e incrementos). O IRI variou cerca de três vezes entre a melhor e a pior progênie, da qual as progênies 7, 6, 11 e 10 tiveram os maiores valores de IRI. Uma análise de componentes principais com as características silviculturais de maior interesse (IRI, DAP, GE, fuste retilíneo, bifurcação e estado fitossanitário) permitiu agrupar as progênies 6, 7 e 11 entre aquelas com melhor desempenho silvicultural. A maior parte das progênies apresentou desempenho intermediário e semelhante entre si, sendo o pior desempenho para a maioria das características relacionado à progênie 2. Progênies de Parkia multijuga divergem quanto ao desempenho silvicultural durante o estabelecimento inicial dos plantios. Logo, o agrupamento das progênies com melhores desempenhos é fundamental na seleção de materiais genéticos superiores para a composição de plantios de produção desta espécie na região Amazônica.

ABSTRACT Progeny tests are strategies for ex situ genetic conservation and genetic improvement, as they allow the selection of genotypes of better quality and high productivity. However, the tree genetic improvement has not been properly applied to native species of the Amazon region. We investigated if Parkia multijuga progenies have different silvicultural performance and if it is possible to cluster them into different performance classes. The experiment was settled in a complete random block design with 14 progenies, a total of 18 seedlings from each progeny planted in six blocks (252 plants). Three years after planting, the following variables were evaluated: diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, stem height, crown diameter, crown length, crown area, crown ratio, slenderness (S), range index (RI), salience index (SI), bifurcation occurrence, percentage of individuals with rectilinear stem and phytosanitary status. Survival, mean annual increment in height and diameter and the integrated response index (IRI = survival and increments) were also calculated. IRI varied about three times between the best and the worst progeny, of which the progenies 7, 6, 11 and 10 had the highest IRI values. The Principal Component Analysis of the most interesting silvicultural characteristics (IRI, DBH, GE, rectilinear stem, bifurcation, and phytosanitary status) allowed to group progenies 6, 7 and 11 among those with the best silvicultural performance. Most progenies showed intermediate and similar performance, being the worst performance for most traits related to the progeny 2. Progenies of Parkia multijuga diverge as to the silvicultural performance during the initial establishment of the plantations. Therefore, the grouping of progenies with better performance is fundamental in the selection of superior genetic material for the composition of productive plantations of this species in the Amazon region.

RESUMO Introdução: O neurinoma plexiforme gigante é um neuroectoderma e uma doença hereditária. É um tumor cutâneo incomum associado à NF1, caracterizado como um tumor benigno da bainha do nervo periférico envolvendo múltiplos fascículos nervosos. Os objetivos da reconstrução da cobertura do antebraço são proteger as estruturas que vão até o punho e a mão e evitar cicatrizes que levem à perda de movimento. Tanto o antebraço quanto a mão desempenham papéis funcionais e sociais. O manejo bem-sucedido de feridas complexas é necessário para a reabilitação funcional geral desses pacientes. Relato do Caso: Paciente do sexo feminino, 31 anos, apresentou-se na divisão de cirurgia plástica com neurofibroma plexiforme gigante no antebraço direito. Após ressecção cuidadosa, todos os tendões anteriores do antebraço foram expostos. O defeito foi coberto com Pelnac T enxertável (espessura de 3mm e tamanho 12 X 24cm2), fixados com pontos monocryl 4-0. Após 10 dias, a matriz dérmica acelular foi removida e um enxerto de malha de pele de espessura parcial foi colocado. No dia 7, a matriz dérmica acelular apresentou bons sinais de ingestão. No dia 17, observamos uma sobrevida do enxerto de 95%. No seguimento de 3 meses, a reconstrução estava estável, sem defeitos de contorno, a mão apresentava amplitude de movimento completa e o paciente não apresentava problemas nas atividades diárias. Conclusões: A matriz dérmica acelular parece ser uma opção útil na cobertura de defeitos complexos no antebraço, permitindo menor morbidade e rápida recuperação funcional.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Giant plexiform neurinoma is a neuroectoderm and inherited disease. It is an uncommon skin tumor associated with NF1, characterized as a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor surrounding multiple nervous fascicles. The goals of forearm coverage reconstruction are to protect the structures running to the wrist and hand and prevent scarring that leads to movement loss. Both forearm and hand play functional and social roles. Successful management of complex wounds is necessary for the overall functional rehabilitation of these patients. Case Report: A 31-year-old woman presented at the plastic surgery division with a giant plexiform neurofibroma in the right forearm. After careful resection, all anterior forearm tendons were exposed. The defect was covered with graftable Pelnac T (thickness of 3mm and sizing 12 X 24cm2), fixed with 4-0 monocryl sutures. After 10 days, the acellular dermal matrix silicone layer was removed, and a split-thickness skin meshed graft was placed. On day 7, the acellular dermal matrix showed good signs of intake. On day 17, we observed a 95% graft survival. At the 3-month follow-up, reconstruction was stable without contouring defects, the hand had full range of motion, and the patient had no problems in daily activities. Conclusions: Acellular dermal matrix appears to be a useful option in covering complex defects in the forearm, allowing for less morbidity and rapid functional recovery.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Standard precautions (SPs) are recommended safety measures for healthcare professionals to follow, with a view to preventing healthcare-related infections (HCRIs) and for their own protection. Inadequate adherence to these measures can lead to occurrences of occupational accidents and HCRIs. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the knowledge of and adherence to SP measures among the nursing staff of a hemodialysis service and the relationship of these variables to occurrences of work accidents with biological material. DESIGN AND SETTING: Descriptive cross-sectional and correlational study with a quantitative approach developed in a hemodialysis clinic in Minas Gerais. METHODS: Data were collected through sociodemographic questionnaires and questionnaires on knowledge of and adherence to SPs. RESULTS: 29 professionals participated in the study. It is noteworthy that all of them had already participated in training related to SPs. However, no relationship was identified between knowledge of (15.17 points) and adherence to (71.86 points) SPs. In addition, inferential analysis showed that there was a relationship between suffering a work accident with biological material and the sociodemographic data and knowledge of and adherence to standard precautions. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of the SPs that had been established did not mean mastery of the subject. Despite positive results regarding adherence, factors requiring improvement were observed. It was possible to infer the characteristics that gave rise to greater risk of occurrences of accidents at work. Thus, this study showed the importance of assessing knowledge of and adherence to SP, in order to optimize and direct continuing education towards resolving occupational exposure.
