Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and changes in lipoprotein. Literature data suggest that cholesterol associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDLc) plays a protective role against albuminuria and diabetic nephropathy. These factors are related with changes in serum apolipoproteins such Apo A-I. This work aims to evaluate the correlation of apolipoprotein A-I with renal function in diabetic outpatients. Samples were collected from 281 outpatients for analyses of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), serum creatinine (SCr), urea (BUN), cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-cholesterol (HDLc) and estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Urinary samples were obtained to assess urine albumin creatinine ratio (UACR). Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) was calculated to estimate insulin resistance. The mean age was 61,5 ± 16,4 years. Most patients were female, Afro-Mestizo and over 50 years of age. Pearson's revealed negative correlation of creatinine with HDLc and Apo A-I. There was a correlation of eGFR with HbA1c, TG and HDLc. TyG presented a negative correlation with Apo A-I and HDLc. The highest quartiles of UACR presented the highest TyG and the lowest Apo A-I. In conclusion, Apo A-I indicated an association with insulin resistance and changes in renal function parameters, especially as a factor associated with the onset of albuminuria, with a better predictive potential than the HDLc.

Resumo O estudo objetivou examinar a associação entre agrupamentos de atividade física (AF), dieta e tempo de televisão (TV) com o status do peso em uma amostra representativa de estudantes brasileiros. Foram analisados dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar (PeNSE) 2015 (n = 16.521; idade média 14,8, desvio padrão de 0,03 ano). AF (minutos/semana no lazer e deslocamento para/da escola), assistir televisão (TV) (horas/dia), consumo semanal de doces, refrigerantes, alimentos ultraprocessados/fast-foods, saladas/vegetais e frutas foram coletadas por questionário validado. Análise de classes latentes definiu os perfis de comportamento e a regressão logística binária a associação entre agrupamento e status de peso. Foram identificadas seis classes com comportamentos positivos e negativos. Adolescentes pertencentes à classe “baixo tempo de TV e alta alimentação saudável” apresentaram maior probabilidade de ter sobrepeso/obesidade em comparação com seus pares na classe “AF moderada e dieta mista”. Não foram encontradas associações nos outros perfis. Classes com comportamentos saudáveis e não saudáveis caracterizaram o estilo de vida dos adolescentes e estiveram relacionadas com o status de peso.

PA (minutes/week spent in leisure-time, and commuting to/from school), TV (hours/day), and weekly consumption of deep-fried empanadas, candies, sodas, ultra-processed foods, fast foods, green salads or vegetables, and fruits were self-reported on the validated PeNSE questionnaire. Latent class analysis defined behavior classes, and binary logistic regression assessed the association between clustering and weight status. Six classes’ types with positive and negative behaviors were identified. Adolescents belonging to the “low TV time and high healthy diet” class had higher chances of being overweight (including obesity) compared to their peers in the “moderate PA and mixed diet” class. No associations were found in the other clusters. Mixed classes with healthy and unhealthy behaviors characterized adolescents’ lifestyles and these profiles were related to weight status.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Supplementation with probiotics for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be associated with decreased systemic inflammation. Objective: To assess the impact of oral supplementation with probiotics for patients with CKD on hemodialysis. Method: This double-blind randomized clinical trial included 70 patients on hemodialysis; 32 were given oral supplementation with probiotics and 38 were in the placebo group. Blood samples were collected at the start of the study and patients were given oral supplementation with probiotics or placebo for three months. The probiotic supplement comprised four strains of encapsulated Gram-positive bacteria: Lactobacillus Plantarum A87, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum A218 and Bifidobacterium longum A101. Patients were given one capsule per day for 3 months. Blood samples were taken throughout the study to check for inflammatory biomarkers. Non-traditional biomarkers Syndecan-1, IFN-y, NGAL, and cystatin C were measured using an ELISA kit, along with biochemical parameters CRP, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, PTH, GPT, hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose, and urea. Results: Patients given supplementation with probiotics had significant decreases in serum levels of syndecan-1 (239 ± 113 to 184 ± 106 ng/mL, p = 0.005); blood glucose levels also decreased significantly (162 ± 112 to 146 ± 74 mg/dL, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Administration of probiotics to patients with advanced CKD was associated with decreases in syndecan-1 and blood glucose levels, indicating potential improvements in metabolism and decreased systemic inflammation.

Resumo Introdução: A suplementação com probióticos na doença renal crônica (DRC) pode estar associada à redução do processo inflamatório sistêmico. Objetivo: Avaliar a suplementação oral com probióticos em pacientes com DRC em hemodiálise. Método: Ensaio clínico, duplo cego, randomizado com 70 pacientes em hemodiálise, sendo 32 do grupo que recebeu o suplemento de probióticos e 38 do grupo placebo. Inicialmente ocorreu a coleta de sangue e suplementação oral com probióticos ou placebo durante três meses. O suplemento probiótico foi composto pela combinação de 4 cepas de bactérias Gram-positivas encapsuladas: Lactobacillus Plantarum A87, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum A218 e Bifidobacterium longum A101, sendo 1 cápsula do suplemento ao dia, durante 3 meses. Após esse período foram feitas novas coletas de sangue para dosagem dos biomarcadores inflamatórios. Foram analisados os biomarcadores não tradicionais: Syndecan-1, IFN-y, NGAL e cistatina C pelo método ELISA, e os seguintes parâmetros bioquímicos: PCR, cálcio, fósforo, potássio, PTH, TGP, hematócrito, hemoglobina, glicose e ureia. Resultados: Os pacientes que receberam suplemento tiveram diminuição significativa dos níveis séricos de syndecan-1 (de 239 ± 113 para 184 ± 106 ng/mL, p = 0,005). Outro parâmetro que diminuiu significativamente nos pacientes que receberam suplemento foi a glicemia (de 162 ± 112 para 146 ± 74 mg/dL, p = 0,02). Conclusão: O uso de probióticos na DRC avançada esteve associado à redução dos níveis de syndecan-1 e glicemia, sinalizando possível melhora no metabolismo e redução do processo inflamatório sistêmico.

Abstract One of the appeals of the rising organic market is the guarantee of offering healthier foods with less impact on the environment, from a more sustainable production method. Dairy market is one of the most popular in the sector but studies on organic dairy products safety are still scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of organic and conventional Minas Frescal cheese samples, and the antimicrobial sensitivity of isolated strains of Escherichia coli and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus to different antimicrobials. Listeria spp. and Salmonella spp. was not detected in any of the samples analyzed. Regarding coagulase-positive Staphylococcus, 70% showed higher counts than that is established by Brazilian legislation, but with no significant difference between the systems. In the determination of the Most Probable Number of E. coli was observed significant difference between the systems, with a higher contamination index in cheeses derived from the organic system. All strains isolated showed 100% resistance to β-lactams and both in the conventional and organic systems were observed multiple resistance characteristics. Considering the similarity of the results obtained, it is necessary to analyze other parameters such as production system, herd health and good manufacturing practices to compare deeply both systems.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a associação entre a cesariana e o quociente de inteligência (QI) em adolescentes do Município de São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo longitudinal utilizando dados da coorte de nascimento em São Luís, iniciado no ano de 1997. A abordagem ocorreu na terceira fase da coorte, em 2016, com adolescente aos 18 e 19 anos de idade. A variável de exposição foi a via de nascimento e a variável de desfecho foi o QI, mensurada a partir da aplicação da terceira versão da Escala de Inteligência Wechsler para Adultos (WAIS-III). Na análise dos dados verificou-se a média do QI segundo as covariáveis e utilizou-se a regressão linear multivariada. Para controlar os fatores de confundimento foi elaborado um modelo teórico utilizando o gráfico acíclico dirigido. As variáveis confundidoras foram as socioeconômicas no momento do nascimento e as variáveis perinatais. A média do QI dos adolescentes foi 101,4. Na análise bruta, o QI dos adolescentes nascidos de cesariana foi 5,8 pontos maior em relação aos nascidos de parto vaginal (IC95%: 3,8; 7,7, p ≤ 0,001), com significância estatística. Na análise multivariada, o valor reduziu para 1,9 (IC95%: -0,5; 3,6, p = 0,141), sem significância estatística. O resultado do estudo mostrou que a cesariana não está associada ao QI dos adolescentes nessa amostra e reflete que as diferenças encontradas podem ser explicadas por outros fatores, como aspectos socioeconômicos e perinatais.

Este es un estudio longitudinal que utiliza datos de la cohorte de nacimiento en São Luís, que comenzó en 1997. El abordaje ocurrió en la tercera fase de la cohorte, en 2016, con adolescente a los 18 y 19 años de edad. La variable de exposición fue la vía de nacimiento y la variable de resultado fue el CI, medido a partir de la aplicación de la tercera versión de la Escala de Inteligencia para Adultos (WAIS-III). En el análisis de datos se verificó el CI medio según las covariables y se utilizó la regresión lineal multivariada. Para controlar los factores de confusión se elaboró un modelo teórico utilizando el gráfico acíclico dirigido. Las variables de confusión fueron las socioeconómicas en el momento del nacimiento y las variables perinatales. El coeficiente intelectual promedio de los adolescentes fue de 101,4. En el análisis bruto, el CI de los adolescentes nacidos de cesárea fue 5,8 puntos mayor en relación a los nacidos de parto vaginal (IC95%: 3,8; 7,7, p ≤ 0,001), con significancia estadística. This study aimed to evaluate the association between cesarean section and intelligence quotient (IQ) in adolescents from the Municipality of São Luís, Maranhão State, Brazil. This is a longitudinal study using data from the São Luís birth cohort, started in 1997. The approach occurred in the third phase of the cohort, in 2016, with adolescents aged 18 and 19 years. The exposure variable was mode of delivery and the outcome variable was IQ, measured by applying the third version of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III). In the data analysis, the average IQ was verified according to the covariates and multivariate linear regression was used. To control confounding factors, a theoretical model was elaborated using the directed acyclic graph. The confounding variables were socioeconomic variables at birth and perinatal variables. Their average IQ was 101.4. In the crude analysis, the IQ of adolescents born by cesarean section was 5.8 points higher than those born by vaginal delivery (95%CI: 3.8; 7.7, p ≤ 0.001), with statistical significance. In the multivariate analysis, the value decreased to 1.9 (95%CI: -0.5; 3.6, p = 0.141), without statistical significance. The result of the study showed that cesarean section is not associated with the IQ of adolescents in this sample and reflects that the differences can be explained by other factors, such as socioeconomic and perinatal aspects.

Abstract Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) -induced Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by hypoxia and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which could be prevented with antioxidant agents. The essential oil of Lippia alba (EOLA) chemotype citral-limonene is rich in components with antioxidant activity. So, this study aims to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of the EOLA on in vivo and in vitro models of renal I/R. Male Wistar rats were submitted to right nephrectomy, followed by ischemia by clamping the renal artery in the left kidney and a reperfusion. Animals received EOLA (200 mg/kg) or vehicle three days prior to I/R surgery. Blood and urine samples were obtained to evaluate creatinine, urea, uric acid, and creatinine clearance. The left kidney was collected for histological evaluations and analysis of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH). HK-2 cells were used to evaluate the effect of EOLA on I/R in vitro, using the MTT assay. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to evaluate cell morphological alterations. The I/R resulted in biochemical parameter alterations, with EOLA reverting all these alterations. Histological evaluation showed that EOLA protected the morphological changes caused by I/R. Also, EOLA was able to reduce TBARS and increase GSH levels in renal tissue. In the tubular cells, the EOLA partially reversed the damage caused by I/R, which was observed through the SEM. The EOLA showed effect against I/R-induced AKI through pre-treatment, protecting biochemical and oxidative parameters in vivo and reversing tubular cell damage in vitro.

Abstract This study evaluated the construct validity of the instrument Oral Health Literacy among diabetics. A probabilistic random sample of 239 diabetics from an infinite population answered the 10 items of the questionnaire. The structural validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis and goodness of fit, chi-square per degrees of freedom ratio (X2/df), comparative fit index (CFI), goodness-of-fit index (GFI), and root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA). Internal consistency was estimated by the average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR). The scores were dichotomized with the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval as the cutoff point. The three-dimensional model presented good quality parameters (X2 /df = 2.459; CFI = 0.988; TLI = 0.981) and poor RMSEA (0.078). Internal consistency was adequate; AVE for the Access, Understand/appraise, and Apply subscales were 0.831, 0.981, and 0.954 and the CR for these subscales were 0.893, 0.962, and 0.822, respectively. Inadequate literacy ranged from 41.8 to 48.1%. The three-dimensional model identified (access, understand/appraise, and apply) showed structural validity, good internal consistency, and understandability.

ABSTRACT Background: The long-term effects of schistosomiasis on the glomerulus may contribute to the development of chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to investigate baseline Schistosoma mansoni-Circulating Anodic Antigen (CAA) levels and their association with kidney biomarkers related to podocyte injury and inflammation in long-term follow-up after praziquantel (PZQ) treatment. Methods: Schistosoma infection was diagnosed by detecting CAA in urine using a quantitative assay based on lateral flow using luminescent up-converting phosphor reporter particles. A cutoff threshold of 0.1 pg/mL CAA was used to diagnose Schistosoma infection (baseline) in a low-prevalence area in Ceará, Northeast, Brazil. Two groups were included: CAA-positive and CAA-negative individuals, both of which received a single dose of PZQ at baseline. Urinary samples from 55 individuals were evaluated before (baseline) and at 1, 2, and 3 years after PZQ treatment. At all time points, kidney biomarkers were quantified in urine and adjusted for urinary creatinine levels. Results: CAA-positive patients had increased baseline albuminuria and proteinuria and showed greater associations between kidney biomarkers. CAA levels correlated only with Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) (podocyte injury) levels. Increasing trends were observed for malondialdehyde (oxidative stress), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (inflammation marker), and VEGF. In the follow-up analysis, no relevant differences were observed in kidney biomarkers between the groups and different periods. Conclusions: S. mansoni-infected individuals presented subclinical signs of glomerular damage that may reflect podocyte injury. However, no causal effect on long-term renal function was observed after PZQ treatment.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) fertilizer management is a key factor in the success of maize crops. The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of second-crop maize to N applied exclusively as topdressing or at planting + topdressing. Five experiments were conducted in areas in southwestern Goiás in 2019 and 2020 to evaluate N application rates of 0 and 30 kg ha-1 at planting, combined with five N rates applied as topdressing at the maize V3 stage over a total of 0, 75, 150, 225, and 300 kg ha-1. Dry matter production in the V6 or V9 stage and yield parameters at harvest were evaluated. N application did not affect the number of grain rows per ear but increased the number of grains per row and, particularly, grain weight. The crop responded positively to increases in the total N rate in 4 of the 5 experiments: in 1 of these experiments, N fertilizer application at planting contributed to an increase in the efficiency of topdressing fertilization, resulting in a higher maize yield with a lower total N rate; in the other 3, a positive maize response to N occurred when total N was applied as topdressing at V3. However, the highest mean maize grain yield (8,233 kg ha-1) was found in the trial that showed no response to N fertilizer application - probably due to the better chemical fertility conditions of the area combined with an adequate distribution of rainfall, considering the multiple factors involved in N application recommendations.

RESUMO O manejo de nitrogênio (N) na cultura do milho é fator chave para o sucesso de seu cultivo, de modo que se objetivou com esse estudo avaliar a resposta da cultura, em segunda safra, à doses de N aplicadas exclusivamente em cobertura ou na adubação de base (semeadura) complementada com a adubação de cobertura. Para tal, em 2019 e 2020 foram realizados cinco experimentos em áreas da região Sudoeste do Estado de Goiás, testando 0 e 30 kg ha-1 de N aplicados na base combinados com cinco doses totais de N (0, 75, 150, 225 e 300 kg ha-1) completadas em cobertura, quando as plantas estavam em estádio V3. Avaliou-se a produção de massa seca na fase vegetativa V6 ou V9, e, por ocasião da colheita, os parâmetros produtivos. Verificou que a aplicação de N não interfere no número de fileiras de grãos, mas aumenta o número de grãos por fileira e, principalmente, o peso de grãos. Em 4 dos 5 ensaios, a cultura respondeu positivamente ao incremento da dose total de N; em 1 desses, a adubação de base contribuiu para aumento da eficiência da adubação de cobertura, de modo que a produtividade do milho foi maior e atingida com uma dose total de N menor. Nos outros 3, respostas positivas foram observadas quando da aplicação total do N em cobertura e em dose única. A maior produtividade média de grãos de milho (8.233 kg ha-1), no entanto, ocorreu justamente no ensaio com ausência de resposta à adubação nitrogenada - provavelmente devido às melhores condições de fertilidade química da área aliada à adequada distribuição das chuvas, considerando assim múltiplos fatores para N recomendações de aplicação.

Na análise multivariada, o valor reduziu para 1,9 (IC95%: -0,5; 3,6, p = 0,141), sem significância estatística. O resultado do estudo mostrou que a cesariana não está associada ao QI dos adolescentes nessa amostra e reflete que as diferenças encontradas podem ser explicadas por outros fatores, como aspectos socioeconômicos e perinatais.

ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the efficiency of three different instruments in the root canals of artificial primary molars as well as the quality of the fillings. Methods: Sixty artificial primary molars were divided into three groups of 20 teeth. Each group was submitted to a different technique: Group 1 - conventional manual technique using Kerr files; Group 2 - manual technique with nickel-titanium files; Group 3 - NiTi rotary technique. The root canals were filled with calcium hydroxide paste. Aspects such as homogeneity of the fillings, taper and flowability of the preparations were considered comparatively to assess the quality of the instrumentations. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the efficiency of the preparation of the root canal considering the preparation times of them. Results: All three techniques were equally effective at shaping the root canals of primary teeth. The working time was shorter with the rotary instrument (p=0.000). In the pairwise comparisons, working time was shorter with the rotary instrument compared to the manual techniques with steel files (p=0.000) and NiTi files (p=0.000). Comparing the manual techniques, the working time was shorter with NiTi files compared to steel files (p=0.011). Moreover, less variability in the preparation time was found when the rotary instrument was used. Conclusions: The mechanized rotary method led to a shorter operating time in comparison to the manual techniques and is therefore a preferable option for the preparation of the root canals of primary teeth.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a eficiência de três instrumentos diferentes nos canais radiculares de molares decíduos artificiais, bem como a qualidade das obturações. Métodos: Sessenta molares decíduos artificiais foram divididos em três grupos de 20 dentes. Cada grupo foi submetido a uma técnica diferente: Grupo 1 - técnica manual convencional com limas Kerr; Grupo 2 - técnica manual com limas de níquel-titânio; Grupo 3 - Técnica rotatória de níquel-titânio. Os canais radiculares foram preenchidos com pasta de hidróxido de cálcio. Aspectos como homogeneidade das obturações, conicidade e fluidez das preparações foram considerados comparativamente para avaliar a qualidade das instrumentações. Os testes não paramétricos de Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney foram utilizados para comparar a eficiência do preparo do canal radicular considerando os tempos de preparo dos mesmos. Resultados: Todas as três técnicas foram igualmente eficazes na modelagem dos canais radiculares. O tempo de trabalho foi menor com o instrumento rotatório (p=0,000). Nas comparações pareadas, o tempo de trabalho foi menor com o instrumento rotatório em comparação com as técnicas manuais com limas de aço (p=0,000) e limas de NiTi (p=0,000). Comparando as técnicas manuais, o tempo de trabalho foi menor com as limas de NiTi em comparação com as limas de aço (p=0,011). Além disso, foi encontrada menor variabilidade no tempo de preparo quando o instrumento rotatório foi utilizado. Conclusão: O método rotatório levou um menor tempo operatório em comparação com as técnicas manuais e, portanto, é uma opção preferível para o preparo dos canais radiculares de dentes decíduos.

Abstract Ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R) is commonly related to acute kidney injury (AKI) and oxidative stress. Antioxidant agents are used to treat this condition. Lippia sidoides is a brazillian shrub with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Lippia sidoides ethanolic extract (LSEE) on in vivo and in vitro models of AKI induced by I/R. Male Wistar rats were submitted to unilateral nephrectomy and ischemia on contralateral kidney for 60 min via clamping followed by reperfusion for 48 h. They were divided into four groups: Sham, LSEE (sham-operated rats pre-treated with LSEE), I/R (rats submitted to ischemia) and I/R-LSEE (rats treated with LSEE before ischemia). Kidney tissues homogenates were used to determine stress parameters and nephrin expression. Plasma and urine samples were collected for biochemical analysis. I/R in vitro assays were evaluated by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) and flow cytometry assays in Rhesus Monkey Kidney Epithelial Cells (LLC-MK2). The LSEE treatment prevented biochemical and nephrin expression alterations, as well as oxidative stress parameters. In the in vitro assay, LSEE protected against cell death, reduced the reactive oxygen species and increased mitochondrial transmembrane potential. LSEE showed biotechnological potential for a new phytomedicine as a nephroprotective agent.

ABSTRACT The local cacao varieties prevalent in the Atlantic Forest region in Bahia, Brazil, have been multiplied by farmers with seedlings produced by the most productive plants. However, these plants have not been evaluated for resistance to Ceratocystis wilt. Thus, in the present study, the resistance levels of different genotypes of local cacao varieties were assessed, aimed at their use in breeding for resistance to this disease. Leaf disks from 119 cacao genotypes, locally named as varieties ‘Common’ (49 genotypes), ‘Maranhão’ (34), and ‘Pará’ (36), were inoculated with Ceratocystis cacaofunesta. Based on the mean number of perithecia formed on those disks, different cacao genetic groups were defined according to the Scott-Knott test. For the three varieties, most genotypes were classified together with the resistance control variety (‘Jaca’), while less than one third of the genotypes were classified together with the susceptible control (CCN51). Therefore, there is variability for resistance to Ceratocystis wilt among the local cacao varieties, and resistant genotypes will be useful in breeding aimed at resistance to this disease.

RESUMO As variedades locais de cacau predominantes na Região de Mata Atlântica na Bahia, Brasil, vêm sendo multiplicadas pelos agricultores a partir de mudas produzidas com sementes das plantas mais produtivas. No entanto, essas plantas não têm sido avaliadas quanto à resistência à Murcha de Ceratocystis. Desta forma, nesta pesquisa, os níveis de resistência de diferentes genótipos de variedades locais de cacaueiro foram avaliados, visando à sua utilização no melhoramento para resistência a essa doença. Discos foliares de 119 acessos de cacaueiro, localmente denominados de variedade Comum (49 acessos), Maranhão (34) e Pará (36), foram inoculadas com Ceratocystis cacaofunesta. Com base no número médio de peritécios formados nesses discos, foram definidos diferentes grupos genéticos de cacau dentre os genótipos testados por meio do teste de Scott-Knott. As três variedades apresentaram a maioria dos genótipos classificados juntamente com a variedade controle de resistência (‘Jaca’), sendo que menos de um terço dos genótipos foram classificados junto com o controle suscetível (CCN51). Conclui-se que há variabilidade para resistência à Murcha de Ceratocystis nas variedades locais de cacau, sendo os genótipos resistentes úteis ao melhoramento visando resistência a essa doença.

Abstract Changes in lipoprotein metabolism are among the main causes of hemodynamic impairment in renal function. COVID-19 is an multisystemic inflammatory disease, aggravating this situation. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship of serum lipoprotein profile with inflammatory parameters and renal function in 95 COVID-19 outpatients in comparison with 173 with flu-like symptoms. Serum samples were collected for the determination of total cholesterol and fractions, apolipoproteins (Apo A-I and Apo B), urea (sUr) and creatinine (sCr). The glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated. Neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) ratios were calculated as inflammatory parameters derived from the blood tests. COVID-19 patients presented lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (47.90 ± 1.543 vs. 51.40 ± 0.992) and higher PLR (190.9 ± 9.410 vs. 137.6 ± 5.534) and NLR (3.40 ± 0.22 vs. 2.80 ± 0.15). Both NLR and PLR correlated with each other (r = 0.639). Furthermore, the Apo B/Apo A-I ratio was correlated with PLR (r = 0.5818) and eGFR (r = -0.2630). COVID-19 patients classified as at high risk of developing acute myocardial infarction based on the Apo B/ Apo A-I ratio had higher values for sUr/sCr. Thus, serum apolipoproteins, PLR, and NLR could be related to renal dysfunction in COVID-19.
