ABSTRACT: Bacteriophages have been investigated as alternative to the treatment of bacterial infections, including bovine mastitis, in production animals. In this meta-analysis, we evaluated in vitro efficiency of phages of Staphylococcus aureus against S. aureus, which is involved in the etiology of bovine mastitis. Seventeen studies were included and the bacterial lytic activity was extracted using proportion analysis. The lytic efficiency of phages was obtained in this meta-analysis using a random-effects model [significant difference (P<0.05)]. Forest plots were used to graphically represent the efficiency of phages on bacterial isolates. Most phages (e.g., CS1, DW2, ΦSA011, ΦSA012, ΦSA022, ΦSA023, ΦSA024, ΦSA025, ΦSA037, ΦSA038, ΦSA039, ΦSA041, ΦSA042, ΦSA043, ΦSA044, MSA6, Ufv-aur2 to Ufv-aur11, SAH-1, SPW, vB_SauM_JS25, SaPh1 to SaPh6, SA, SANF, SA2, ΦSA012, ΦSA039, phi11, phiIPLA88, phiIPLA35, phiIPLA-RODI, phiIPLA-C1C, SAJK-IND, vBSP-A1, vBSP-A2, STA1.ST29, EB1.ST11, EB1.ST27, Remus, and ISP) were efficiently lytics or infected most S. aureus isolates, demonstrating 80% (P<0.05) lytic efficiency. The phages SA, SANF and SA2, also demonstrated lytic activity or infected the non-Staphylococcus aureus and Macrococcus caseolyticus isolates. In this meta-analysis, we compared and demonstrated the in vitro efficiency and host range of S. aureus phages. Additionally, the phages represent an alternative to be researched to treat bovine mastitis in dairy cattle caused by the prevalent microorganism, S. aureus.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to obtain and evaluate thermodynamic properties and hygroscopic equilibrium isotherms of urunday seeds as a function of air relative humidity and temperature, as well as identify the best-fitted mathematical models for adsorption phenomenon. A static-gravimetric method was used to obtain hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content. Seeds were placed in airtight containers with different saturated saline solutions for relative humidity control. These were then kept in BOD incubator chambers at 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C. Hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content decreased as temperature increased, for the same water activity. The Sigma-Copace model best-fitted seed adsorption data for equilibrium water activity intervals between 0.1129 and 0.8232 (dry basis). Both vaporization latent-heat and differential sorption entropy increased with decreasing hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content. Adsorption process in urunday seeds was controlled by enthalpy.

Resultados A pesquisa bibliográfica identificou 1.244 artigos.
Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature and answer the following central question: "What are the risk factors associated with worse clinical outcomes of pediatric bacterial meningitis patients?" Methods: The articles were obtained through literary search using electronic bibliographic databases: Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, and LILACS; they were selected using the international guideline outlined by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols. Results: The literature search identified 1,244 articles. After methodological screening, 17 studies were eligible for this systematic review. A total of 9,581 patients aged between 0 days and 18 years were evaluated in the included studies, and several plausible and important prognostic factors are proposed for prediction of poor outcomes after bacterial meningitis in childhood. Late diagnosis reduces the chances for a better evolution and reinforces the importance of a high diagnostic suspicion of meningitis, especially in febrile pictures with nonspecific symptomatology. S. pneumoniae as a causative pathogen was demonstrated to be related to clinical severity. Conclusions: Early prediction of an adverse outcome may help determine which children require more intensive or longer follow-up and may provide the physician with rationale for parental counseling about their child's prognosis in an early phase of the disease.

Although Quercetin absorbs in the UVA/UVB electromagnetic region, it is limited for applications as a UV filter due to its low lipophilicity and capacity to penetrate the epidermis. In order to overcome this limitation, we synthetized and evaluated the photo protective properties of a derivative obtained from Quercetin. The derivative was prepared by alkylation of Quercetin with iodoethane and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The in vitro Solar Protection Factor was determined by the Mansur method and the cytotoxicity was evaluated using hepatocellular cell (Hep G2) cells. Finally, Quercetin and the corresponding derivative were incorporated in nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsions with particles sizes between 53 and 73 nm were obtained, and polydispersity indexes were around 0.1, indicating good homogeneity of the nanoemulsion particles. The cell viability study for the Quercetin derivative indicated a very low cytotoxicity profile. The chemical modification of Quercetin resulted in a promising compound with improved properties desirable for skin penetration and incorporation into sunscreen formulations.

ABSTRACT Phosphorus losses in runoff water and eroded sediment may increase the risk of eutrophication. Erosion prediction models can be used to assess and quantify nutrient losses and transport in different soil management scenarios. This study aimed to assess the performance of models to estimate the losses of available phosphorus in eroded sediments and assess their spatial variability pattern. The experiment was installed on a eutrophic Red Ultisol located in Tabapuã, northwestern São Paulo State, São Domingos Stream Watershed. Aiming at estimating and validating the models, measurements were made from 2007 to 2015 at 17 observation points (slopes), determining soil phosphorus content (Psoil), eroded sediments (Psed), and enrichment rate (ERsed). The models applied to estimate the enrichment rates of phosphorus in the eroded sediment and runoff are efficient when in use with the predictions of the model Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP). The enrichment rates obtained presented a Nash-Sutcliffe (NS) coefficient close to 1. Losses of soluble phosphorus in runoff above 0.02 mg L−1, a critical value for eutrophication, can be obtained in 81% of the watershed area with a probability higher than 75%.

Ensaio: Avaliação e Políticas Públicas em Educação
- Journal Metrics
Abstract The document we presented is the result of the reflection of Editors of Scientific Journals connected to FEPAE Southeast and expresses concrete concerns about the material conditions for the realization of its work and about the evaluation criteria that have been used to qualify its journals. Cheaper budgets, dismantling of university structures that supported many academic journals and indicators which everytime complicate even more the operational procedures involved in editorial production, undermine the national journals. Lack of visibility about the evaluation procedures, absence of dialogue about results and questions connected to the Qualis frequency bring uncertainty for the authors who have in the journals a vehicle for sharing its practices and theories. This way we want to deepen the discussion with the scientific community and the Regulatory Governmental Agency - CAPES - about the destinations reserved to Brazilian Scientific Journals.

Abstract: Objectives: To compare different neonatal outcomes according to the different types of treatments used in the management of gestational diabetes mellitus. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. The study population comprised pregnant women with gestational diabetes treated at a public maternity hospital from July 2010 to August 2014. The study included women aged at least 18 years, with a singleton pregnancy, who met the criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus. Blood glucose levels, fetal abdominal circumference, body mass index and gestational age were considered for treatment decision-making. The evaluated neonatal outcomes were: type of delivery, prematurity, weight in relation to gestational age, Apgar at 1 and 5 min, and need for intensive care unit admission. Results: The sample consisted of 705 pregnant women. The neonatal outcomes were analyzed based on the treatment received. Women treated with metformin were less likely to have children who were small for gestational age (95% CI: 0.09-0.66) and more likely to have a newborn adequate for gestational age (95% CI: 1.12-3.94). Those women treated with insulin had a lower chance of having a preterm child (95% CI: 0.02-0.78). The combined treatment with insulin and metformin resulted in higher chance for a neonate to be born large for gestational age (95% CI: 1.14-11.15) and lower chance to be born preterm (95% CI: 0.01-0.71). The type of treatment did not affect the mode of delivery, Apgar score, and intensive care unit admission. Conclusions: The pediatrician in the delivery room can expect different outcomes for diabetic mothers based on the treatment received.

ABSTRACT Considering the importance of nutrients in the soil for the plants development and the soil quality conservation and the quantification relevance of them for proper soil management, the aims of this research were: (i) to quantify the clay loss, adsorbed and soluble P from interrill erosion influenced by the presence of sugarcane residues on the ground surface; (ii) to determine the minimum percentage of residues to be maintained on the soil surface to not enrich the eroded sediment by clay and soluble P (Psed) and adsorbed (Pads). The experimental area is located in Guariba - SP, with soil classified as Red Dystrophic Oxisol. The experiment was designed based on results of previous experiments with residue analysis of variance for 40 plots. These experiments were conducted by our research group, which provided field representation and the establishment of a minimum number of degrees of freedom necessary to ensure normal distribution of results and variance homoscedasticity. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial design, 5 treatments with straw sugarcane and 3 repetitions, totaling 15 plots. In the treatments, the straw was manually distributed across the surface of the soil in amounts of 0; 0.16; 0.35; 0.52 to 0.7 Kg by plot, giving 0% coverage (SC0), 25% (SC25), 50% (SC50), 75% (SC75) and 100% (SC100), respectively. The experimental plots were subjected to simulated rain with average intensity of 60 mm h−1 for 65 minutes. To avoid enrichment ratio (ER) of the sediment eroded by Psed, Pads and clay, a minimum soil surface coverage (SC) of 42% is necessary.

Whereas surveys of the bat fauna are available for some localities in the Brazilian Northeast, studies in the caatinga scrublands are still limited. The aim of this study was to survey the bat fauna in an area of caatinga scrublands in the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN Serra das Almas), which is located on the Ibiapaba Plateau, State of Ceará. The bat assemblage of the reserve was surveyed in July 2012 (rainy season), and January 2013 (dry season), with a total of 19 sampling nights. We captured 347 individuals of 23 species representing six families. The bat fauna was characterized by the predominance of a few abundant species, in particular phyllostomid frugivores, and many rare species, which is frequent in studies based on mist nets at ground level. The first records of Tonatia saurophila and Chiroderma vizottoi (recently described and known only from its type locality) are reported for the State of Ceará, where 66 bat species are now known to occur.

Several sectors of the industry (pharmaceutical, food, and other) often occupy a prominent position in scientific meetings on health. The aim of this article is to discuss the participation of food and beverage industries (Big Food and Big Soda) in events organized by scientific institutions in health and nutrition, highlighting potential conflicts of interest in such partnerships. As an example, the authors report the case of a Brazilian national event organized by a nutrition scientific association in 2011. Focused on the theme "Evidence-based Nutrition," the event's scientific program was largely influenced by corporate sponsors. For example, a symposium at this congress was organized by a beverage company known worldwide for its sugar-sweetened products and classified as the "diamond sponsor" of the event. While debating the adoption of healthy lifestyles in the current scenario of rising occurrence of obesity, the rationale for health promotion was reduced to providing information that would motivate rational individual choices, thus ignoring any political, economic, cultural, marketing, and social factors involved in the global process of nutrition transition. The authors conclude that conflicts of interest are present in the participation of food and beverage industries in health scientific events. The industries' strategy attempts to grant legitimacy to the production and marketing of their products through an association with adequate health practices. Health professionals and policy-makers should reflect on such partnerships because their main purpose is to generate profit, not the promotion of public health.

Objective:The treatment of tobacco addiction in Brazil has expanded in recent years; however, we must increase knowledge about the characteristics of individuals who adhere to cessation programs in order to adjust treatments to specific characteristics of the target population that favor success. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of smokers who present to Brazilian public health units seeking help to quit smoking based on the experience of a primary health care unit that covers a poor community in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Methods:Data were collected at a Teaching Health Center from January 03 2012 to January 03 2014.Results:Mean patient age was 49.32±11.82 years, and 71% were women. About half of the participants successfully quit smoking (n=125, 51%). Higher levels of nicotine dependence were associated with lower levels of smoking cessation. There was a notable decrease in the probability of remaining smoking throughout the first month of treatment. After 3 weeks of treatment, only 19% had not quit smoking. The probability of quitting smoking decreases by 2% for every additional year of age. Conclusion:There is a need to revise and expand current strategies to make them more effective in preventing smoking since childhood.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Piper aduncum L., Piperaceae, stands out due to its biological activities, however, it is still found in the wild and little is known about its agronomic point of view. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth and to analyze the chemical composition of essential oils from leaves of P. aduncum collected in two different sites of Cerrado as well as in cultivated plants. The cultivation was installed out in a greenhouse using cuttings of adult specimens. Essential oils were obtained from fresh leaves. Plants from the two studied locations showed erect growth habit and behavior of linear growth. The essential oils composition of P. aduncum from Bocaiuva did not differ between wild and cultivated plants, as the major substance identified as 1,8-cineole. The plants from Montes Claros site showed a distinct concentration for the two samples, being the major substance characterized as transocimene (13.4%) for wild and 1,8-cineole (31.3%) for cultivated plants. Samples from both locations showed a similar essential oil composition in cultivars. Our results showed that P. aduncum cultivation is feasible and the variation in chemical composition of the two sites may indicate an environmental influence, since chemical and isoenzyme analysis did not show great differences.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is a prevalent condition in Brazil. Its clinical presentation includes vascular occlusion that result in ischemia, inflammation, dysfunctions, pain and chronic hemolysis, causing irreversible damage and compromising quality of life. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to verify the relationship between musculoskeletal pain, from different body parts, with social economic characteristics and quality of life among individuals with sickle cell disease. METHODS: 27 individuals with sickle cell disease were interviewed with the use of a structured questionnaire with questions about personal, social, economic and cultural variables, the Nordic musculoskeletal symptoms questionnaire and the SF-36 Health Survey. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies and percentages. The inferential Chi-Square test was used for dichotomous variables and the Student t- test for continuous variables, with a significance of 5%. A logistic regression was performed using all variables that correlated with pain as dependent variables. RESULTS: The mean age was 31.77 years, predominantly male, black, registered active employment, with average education and income up to three minimum wages. The regions most affected by pain were hip/limbs, chest, lower back and arms. Physical Functioning from the SF-36 had the highest score and mental health the lowest score. Musculoskeletal pain was present in the arms, chest and lower back. Social Functioning was not associated with pain, indicating the influence of other factors. Arm pain was more frequent in black individuals and those with low education. CONCLUSION: Body pain was associated with race and education and all pain areas were associated with the physical components of the SF-36. Pain was significantly associated with vitality and mental health components of the SF-36.
