Abstract The spore wall of Riccia plano-biconvexa, R. fruchartii, R. cavernosa, R. stenophylla, and R. curtisii was analyzed using light microscopy. The study involved cytochemical analysis to distinguish the different layers of the sporoderm and assess their chemical composition. In all the species studied, the sporoderm was found to have a tri-layered exine, consisting of a lamellar exine 1 that forms ridges and depressions, an intermediate exine 2, and a thick and generally discontinuous exine 3. Cytochemical studies indicated that exine 1 and 2 are composed of sporopollenin, while exine 3 is a mixture of sporopollenin and polysaccharides. The intine, on the other hand, is the only layer that is purely cellulosic and contains pectins. Based on the chemical composition and structural organization, exine 1 and 2 can be categorized as ectexine while exine 3 corresponds to an endexine. Resumo Os esporos de Riccia plano-biconvexa, R.fruchartii, R. cavernosa, R. stenophylla and R. curtisii foram analisados sob microscopia de luz. O estudo citoquímico foi realizado para distinguir as diferentes camadas do esporoderma e para determinar a sua natureza química. O esporoderma de todas as espécies estudadas apresenta uma exina com três camadas, composta por uma exina 1, lamelar, que forma cristas e depressões, uma exina 2, intermediária, e uma exina 3, espessa e geralmente descontínua. Os testes citoquímicos indicam que as exinas 1 e 2 são compostas por esporopolenina, enquanto a exina 3 é uma mistura de esporopolenina e polissacarídeos. A intina é a única camada só celulósica, além de conter pectinas. Com base na composição química e na organização estrutural, as exinas 1 e 2 podem ser agrupadas numa ectexina, enquanto a exina 3 corresponde a uma endexina. Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of whole soy lecithin on the apparent digestibility of the diet, ingestive behavior, productive performance, and carcass characteristics of feedlot-finished beef cattle. This was a completely randomized experimental design involving three treatments: Control diet; Diet with whole soy lecithin (10 g animal-1 day-1); and Diet with whole soy lecithin (20 g animal-1 day-1), with five replications. The diets were formulated and constituted of 33% corn silage and 67% concentrate, on a dry matter basis. Thirty non-castrated ½ Angus × ½ Nellore steers, with an average age of 14 months and average initial body weight of 432 kg, were used in the experiment. The dietary inclusion of whole soy lecithin improved the digestibility of ether extract and neutral detergent fiber but did not influence ingestive behavior. Supplementation with 10 g animal-1 day-1 of whole soy lecithin resulted in higher average weight gain (1.707 kg day-1) followed by non-supplemented animals (1.645 kg day-1) and those supplemented with whole soy lecithin at 20 g animal-1 day-1 (1.587 kg day-1). Carcass fatness was not altered with the supplementation of whole soy lecithin. The supply of whole soy lecithin improved the use of the ether extract and fiber fraction of the diet and resulted in the highest average weight gain. Resumo O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes doses de lecitina integral de soja na digestibilidade aparente da dieta, comportamento ingestivo, desempenho produtivo, e nas características de carcaça de bovinos de corte terminados em confinamento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, constituído de três tratamentos, sendo: Ração controle; Ração com lecitina integral de soja (10 g animal dia-1); e Ração com lecitina integral de soja (20 g animal dia-1), com cinco repetições. As rações, em base na matéria seca, foram formuladas e constituídas por 33% de silagem milho e 67% de concentrado. SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between upper limb kinetics and perceived fatigability in elderly individuals during an upper limb position sustained isometric task. METHODS: A total of 31 elderly participants, 16 men (72.94±4.49 years) and 15 women (72.27±6.05 years), performed a upper limb position sustained isometric task. Upper-limb acceleration was measured using an inertial measurement unit. Perceived fatigability was measured using the Borg CR10 scale. RESULTS: Higher mean acceleration in the x-axis throughout the activity was associated with higher final perceived fatigability scores. Moderate correlations were observed between perceived fatigability variation and mean acceleration cutoffs in all axes during the second half of the activity. In women, significant correlations were found between all perceived fatigability cutoffs and mean acceleration in the y- and x-axes. However, in men, the relationships between perceived fatigability variation and mean acceleration were more extensive and stronger. CONCLUSION: The acceleration pattern of the upper limb is linked to perceived fatigability scores and variation, with differences between sexes. Monitoring upper limb acceleration using a single inertial measurement unit can be a useful and straightforward method for identifying individuals who may be at risk of experiencing high perceived fatigability or task failure. ABSTRACT: This trial evaluated the production performance, gastrointestinal nematode infection (GIN), and selected blood analytes, in Corriedale lambs during the finishing phase in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS) with 2 stocking rates. Fifty-two Corriedale lambs were divided into 4 groups: a semi confinement system with a low stocking rate (T1) for 70 days; a semi confinement system with a high stocking rate (T2) for 70 days; confinement for 28 days, followed by semi confinement with a low stocking rate (T3) for 42 days; and confinement for 28 days, followed by semi confinement with a high stocking rate (T4) for 42 days. Body weight, dry matter intake, blood collection, and faecal analysis of nematode eggs were performed for each animal. The stocking rates did not influence body weight gain for the semiconfined lambs (T1 and T2) or for the confined/semiconfined lambs (T3 and T4). All treatments had lower EPG counts at the end of the experimental period. The nematode genera identified during the experiment trial were Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) for packed cell volume, total plasma protein, and eosinophil means between treatments. These results suggested that the confinement followed by semi confinement in an ICLS, was an option for lamb production during the finishing phase which could be useful in reducing GIN without affecting the production performance. RESUMO: O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo, infecção por nematódeos gastrointestinais (GIN) e variáveis sanguíneas selecionadas, em cordeiras Corriedale durante a fase de terminação em sistema integrado lavoura-pecuária (ICLS) com duas taxas de lotação. O experimento utilizou 52 cordeiras Corriedale divididas em quatro grupos: sistema de semiconfinamento com baixa taxa de lotação por área (T1) por 70 dias; sistema de semiconfinamento com alta lotação por área (T2) por 70 dias; confinamento por 28 dias, seguido de semiconfinamento com baixa lotação por área (T3) por 42 dias; e confinamento por 28 dias, seguido de semiconfinamento com alta lotação por área (T4) por 42 dias. Peso corporal, ingestão de matéria seca, coleta de sangue e análise fecal para ovos de nematódeos foram avaliados para cada animal. Abstract Aging has a direct impact on balance due to changes in sensory and motor response, sarcopenia, reduced muscle strength and range of motion that occur in the elderly. In this context, strength training (ST) programs are seen as a valuable strategy to minimize the deleterious effect of aging on strength production and balance in this population. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of progressive intensity ST on static balance variables in the elderly. The study included 23 elderly with an average age of 65±8.61 years, of both sexes, who performed a twelve-week strength training program, with a frequency of three times a week and with progressive intensity (60 - 85% of 1-RM). Balance was assessed before and after the intervention period, through stabilometric assessment on a force plate. Resumo O envelhecimento tem impacto direto no equilíbrio devido a alterações da resposta sensorial e motora, sarcopenia e redução da força muscular e da amplitude de movimento que ocorre nos idosos. Nesse contexto, programas de treinamento de força (TF) são vistos como valiosa estratégia para minimizar o efeito deletério do envelhecimento na produção de força e no equilíbrio dessa população. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito de 12 semanas de TF com intensidade progressiva sobre as variáveis de equilíbrio estático em idosos. Reports on freeze-cast ceramic materials frequently focus on the study of the organized macroporosity and the properties of the materials. This study aims to describe the microstructure evolution of freeze-cast alumina during the sintering process, analyzing grain growth, densification, pore elimination and crystal structure at different sintering temperatures (1300-1500 °C). Aqueous suspensions with 20 vol% alumina were freeze-cast in liquid N2 and sintered. The microstructure was analyzed by stereological analysis, N2 adsorption and X-ray diffraction. Grain sizes varied within 237-500 nm, and the intergranular porosity decreased from 8.8% at 1300 °C to 1.4% at 1500 °C. N2 isotherm analysis revealed pore shrinking from the region of macro and mesopores (20-80 nm), to smaller residual mesopores (3.7-15 nm) at temperatures above 1400 °C. Rietveld refinement of the XRD diffractograms confirmed increased crystallite size and decreased lattice strain at higher sintering temperatures. Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of titanium surface nanotopography on the initial bacterial adhesion process by in vivo and in vitro study models. Titanium disks were produced and characterized according to their surface topography: machined (Ti-M), microtopography (Ti-Micro), and nanotopography (Ti-Nano). For the in vivo study, 18 subjects wore oral acrylic splints containing 2 disks from each group for 24 h (n = 36). After this period, the disks were removed from the splints and evaluated by microbial culture method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and qPCR for quantification of Streptococcus oralis, Actinomyces naeslundii, Fusobacterium nucleatum, as well as total bacteria. For the in vitro study, adhesion tests were performed with the species S. oralis and A. naeslundii for 24 h. Data were compared by ANOVA, with Tukey’s post-test. Regarding the in vivo study, both the total aerobic and total anaerobic bacteria counts were similar among groups (p > 0.05). In qPCR, there was no difference among groups of bacteria adhered to the disks (p > 0.05), except for A. naeslundii, which was found in lower proportions in the Ti-Nano group (p < 0.05). In the SEM analysis, the groups had a similar bacterial distribution, with a predominance of cocci and few bacilli. In the in vitro study, there was no difference in the adhesion profile for S. oralis and A. naeslundii after 24 h of biofilm formation (p > 0.05). Abstract Objective: To evaluate the correlation between multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings and laboratory test results in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Materials and Methods: A total of 57 patients were evaluated. Patients with suspected PTB were divided into groups according to the final diagnosis (confirmed or excluded), and the groups were compared in terms of sociodemographic variables, clinical symptoms, tomography findings, and laboratory test results. Results: Among the patients with a confirmed diagnosis of PTB, small pulmonary nodules with a peribronchovascular distribution were significantly more common in the patients with a positive sputum smear microscopy result (47.4% vs. 8.3%; p = 0.046), as were a miliary pattern (36.8% vs. 0.0%; p = 0.026), septal thickening (84.2% vs. 41.7%; p = 0.021), and lymph node enlargement (52.6% vs. 8.3%; p = 0.020). Small pulmonary nodules with a centrilobular distribution were significantly more common among the culture-positive patients (75.0% vs. 35.7%; p = 0.045), as was a tree-in-bud pattern (91.7% vs. 42.9%; p = 0.014). A tree-in-bud pattern, one of the main tomography findings characteristic of PTB, had a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 71.0%, 73.1%, 75.9%, and 67.9%, respectively. Conclusion: MDCT presented reliable predictive values for the main tomography findings in the diagnosis of PTB, being a safe tool for the diagnosis of PTB in patients with clinical suspicion of the disease. Resumo Objetivo: Avaliar a correlação entre os achados na tomografia computadorizada multidetectores (TCMD) comparativamente aos resultados laboratoriais em pacientes com tuberculose pulmonar (TBP). Materiais e Métodos: Amostra de 57 pacientes foi avaliada. Pacientes com suspeita clínica de TBP foram divididos de acordo com a positividade do diagnóstico, e as variáveis sociodemográficas, sintomas clínicos e achados tomográficos e laboratoriais foram comparados. Resultados: Nos pacientes com TBP e baciloscopia positiva, foram verificadas frequências significativas para pequenos nódulos pulmonares com distribuição peribroncovascular (47,4% vs. 8,3%; p = 0,046) e miliar (36,8% vs. 0,0%; p = 0,026), espessamento septal (84,2% vs. 41,7%; p = 0,021) e linfonodomegalias (52,6% vs. 8,3%; p = 0,020). Em relação à cultura, os pequenos nódulos pulmonares com distribuição centrolobular (75,0% vs. 35,7%; p = 0,045) e opacidades em árvore em brotamento (91,7% vs. 42,9%; p = 0,014) apresentaram frequências significativamente superiores. Medidas de sensibilidade, especificidade, valor preditivo positivo e valor preditivo negativo para árvore em brotamento, um dos principais achados tomográficos característicos da TBP, foram, respectivamente, 71.0%, 73,1%, 75,9% e 67,9%. Conclusão: A TCMD apresentou medidas preditivas confiáveis para os principais achados tomográficos no diagnóstico de TBP, sendo uma ferramenta segura para o diagnóstico da doença em pacientes com suspeita clínica. Resumo Neospora caninum é uma das principais causas de perda reprodutiva em bovinos em todo o mundo, pois leva ao aborto e ao reposicionamento animal. Embora o Toxoplasma gondii não cause problemas reprodutivos em bovinos, o consumo de carne bovina crua ou não cozida apresenta risco de transmissão. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de anticorpos anti-N. caninum e anti-T. gondii em bovinos leiteiros nas regiões Oeste e Noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Um total de 653 amostras de soro de bovinos leiteiros, foi analisado utilizando-se o ensaio de imunofluorescência indireta (IFI). Os dados epidemiológicos das propriedades foram associados aos resultados sorológicos dos animais por meio de regressão logística. As frequências dos anticorpos contra N. caninum e T. gondii foram 41,6% (272/653) e 11,5% (75/653), respectivamente. Abstract Neospora caninum is a major cause of reproductive loss in cattle worldwide as it leads to abortion and animal repositioning. Although Toxoplasma gondii does not cause a reproductive problem in cattle, consuming raw or uncooked beef poses the risk of transmission. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of anti-N. caninum and anti-T. gondii antibodies in dairy cattle in the West and Northwest regions of São Paulo State, Brazil. A total of 653 serum samples from dairy cows were analyzed using an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Epidemiological data from the farms were associated with the serological results of the animals by logistic regression based on the presence of antibodies. The frequencies of the antibodies against N. caninum and T. gondii were 41.6% (272/653) and 11.5% (75/653), respectively. A statistically significant association was observed between: the serum anti-N. caninum antibodies and breed, history of food supplementation for calves, introduction of outside animals that later presented reproductive problems, and history of reproductive problems by the trimester of gestation. Abstract Introduction: Chimney EVAR (ChEVAR) for the treatment of complex abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has been largely relegated for when fenestrated endografts are unavailable, especially due to durability concerns. However, the off-the-shelf nature of ChEVAR makes it a good option for emergent AAA repair. We report our institutional experience in ChEVAR in an urgent setting. Methods: ChEVAR procedures were collected f rom 2019 to 2023 in a tertiary hospital, and a retrospective analysis was performed. This includes gathered information f rom electronic medical records, surgical reports and the picture archiving system. Descriptive statistics were applied. The main endpoints were technical success,30-day and 1-year survival. Results: Five patients were submitted to urgent aneurysm repair using the chEVAR technique. Average age was 73,4 years and all patients were male. Arterial hypertension was present in 100% patients and all patients were ASA 4. Indications for surgery were post EVAR type 1a endoleak with associated rupture or abdominal pain in two patients; symptomatic/contained rupture of pararenal AAA in two patients; and contained rupture of a thoracoabdominal aneurysm in one patient. A total of eight target vessels were catheterized: two patients required single-vessel chimney and the remainder two-vessel chimney. Target vessels were two superior mesenteric arteries and six renal arteries. Technical success rate was 100% and 30-day mortality was 0%. There were no major complications. Follow-up time is 20.2 months (4.7-38). Target vessel patency during the follow-up period was 87.5%. Three patients (60%) died due to non-aortic related pathologies, on average 18 months after surgery (4.7-38), with a 1-year survival of 80%. Conclusion: Our experience with ChEVAR for emergent AAA repair is satisfactory, with high technical success rates and low short-term mortality. Sac regression, low rates of target vessel occlusion and type 1a endoleaks reveal a favourable profile for aneurysm exclusion. ChEVAR is a viable option in emergent setting for patients unfit for open repair.
