ABSTRACT Neospora caninum is an important worldwide parasite responsible for causing abortion in animals. Due to limited information on the occurrence of infection by this parasite in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, this study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and identify the risk factors associated with the infection in slaughtered cattle, from 19 municipalities distributed in seven microregions of the state. A total of 494 samples were obtained and subjected to anti-N. caninum antibodies, using the Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction technique. Antibodies were detected in 5.06% (25/494) of the samples, in 30.30% (10/33) of farms, in nine municipalities located in four microregions of Rondônia. Of all the animals analyzed, 4.81% of the females (20/416) and 6.41% of the males (05/78) were seropositive for the parasite, with “abortion in the last 12 months” being considered an important risk factor for the occurrence of infection (OR = 9.54; p = 0.01). The present study points out the prevalence of anti-N. caninum antibodies in 5.06% of slaughtered animals and abortion as the main risk factor associated with infection by N. caninum, thus contributing to the elucidation of the epidemiology of this protozoan in Rondônia, Brazil.

RESUMO Neospora caninum é um importante parasito, responsável por causar aborto em animais e distribuído mundialmente. Devido às informações limitadas sobre a ocorrência da infecção por esse parasito no estado de Rondônia, Brasil, este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a soroprevalência e identificar os fatores de risco associados à infecção em bovinos abatidos, oriundos de 19 municípios, distribuídos em sete microrregiões do estado. Um total de 494 amostras foi obtido e submetido à pesquisa de anticorpos anti-N. caninum, por meio da técnica de reação de imunofluorescência indireta. Os anticorpos foram detectados em 5,06% (25/494) das amostras, em 30,30% (10/33) das propriedades rurais, de nove municípios, localizados em quatro microrregiões de Rondônia. De todos os animais analisados, 4,81% das fêmeas (20/416) e 6,41% dos machos (05/78) foram soropositivos para o parasito, sendo o “aborto nos últimos 12 meses” considerado um importante fator de risco para a ocorrência da infecção (OR = 9,54; P = 0,01). O presente estudo aponta a prevalência de anticorpos anti-N. caninum em 5,06% dos animais abatidos e o aborto como o principal fator de risco associado à infecção por N. caninum, contribuindo assim para a elucidação da epidemiologia desse protozoário em Rondônia, Brasil.

There is a high demand for stroke rehabilitation in the Brazilian public health system, but most studies that have addressed rehabilitation for unilateral spatial neglect (USN) after stroke have been performed in high-income countries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze USN patient recruitment in a multicenter noninvasive brain stimulation clinical trial performed in Brazil and to provide study design recommendations for future studies. We evaluated the reasons for exclusion of patients from a multicenter, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial of rehabilitation of USN patients after stroke. Clinical and demographic variables were compared between the included and excluded patients. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Only 173 of the 1953 potential neglect patients (8.8%) passed the initial screening. After screening evaluation, 87/173 patients (50.3%) were excluded for clinical reasons. Cognitive impairment led to the exclusion of 21/87 patients (24.1%). Low socioeconomic status led to the exclusion of 37/173 patients (21.4%). Difficulty obtaining transportation to access treatment was the most common reason for their exclusion (16/37 patients, 43.3%). The analyzed Brazilian institutions have potential for conducting studies of USN. The recruitment of stroke survivors with USN was restricted by the study design and limited financial support. A history of cognitive impairment, intracranial stenting or craniectomy, and lack of transportation were the most common barriers to participating in a multicenter noninvasive brain stimulation trial among patients with USN after stroke.

RESUMO O processo de secagem de grãos é uma prática comum e necessária à manutenção da qualidade, porém é uma das atividades de maior demanda energética dentre as fases pós-colheita. Neste contexto, realizou-se este estudo com objetivo de avaliar os efeitos de diferentes períodos de repouso na eficiência energética do processo de secagem e manutenção da integridade das membranas dos grãos colhidos com teor de água de 0,34 ± 0,01 b.s. Os grãos foram secos em um secador experimental de camada fixa com controle de temperatura e fluxo de ar. O experimento foi montado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco períodos de repouso (0, 4, 8, 12 e 16 horas) e quatro repetições, em que zero corresponde à secagem contínua e os demais à secagem intermitente. Os grãos foram secos a 100 ºC de temperatura e fluxo de ar de 15,4 m3 min-1 t-1 até atingir 0,16 ± 0,02 b.s. Para a secagem intermitente, o processo foi interrompido com 0,22 ± 0,03 b.s. e retomado após o período de repouso. O aumento do período de repouso diminuiu o tempo efetivo de secagem, consumo específico de energia, condutividade elétrica, danos da reação do iodo e aumentou a taxa de secagem e eficiência energética global. A secagem intermitente foi 30,25% mais eficiente que contínua.

ABSTRACT Grain drying is a common process, due to its need for the maintenance of quality, but it is the activity with the highest energy demand among the postharvest stages. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different tempering times on the energy efficiency of drying process and maintenance of cell membrane integrity of maize grains harvested with moisture content at 0.34 ± 0.01 d.b. The grains were dried in an experimental fixed-bed dryer with control of temperature and air flow conditions. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five tempering times (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 hours) and four repetitions, where zero corresponds to continuous drying, while the remaining times correspond to the intermittent dryings. The grains were dried at the temperature of 100 ºC and air flow of 15.4 m3 min-1 t-1 until reaching moisture content of 0.16 ± 0.03 d.b. For intermittent drying, the process was interrupted with 0.22 ± 0.02 d.b. and restarted after the tempering time. The increase of tempering time led to reductions in effective drying time, specific energy consumption, electrical conductivity and damage and increase in the drying rate and overall energy efficiency. Intermittent drying reduced the drying time, being 30.25% more efficient than continuous drying.

Understanding the mechanical behaviour and properties of rocks is critical for industrial operations such as blasting, fracturing, drilling, crushing, and excavating. However, the effect of water and loading rates on the mechanical properties of rocks still remains to be understood. The effects of water content on the mechanical properties of rock under different loading rates were studied. The static and dynamic mechanical behaviour of dry and saturated Berea Sandstone were examined with a quasi-static loading machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). Berea Sandstone is mainly composed of quartz (87%) with about 11% porosity. Overall, static compressive strength, Young's modulus, and tensile strength were significantly greater for dry samples than for saturated ones. In the dynamic tests, tensile strength was higher in the dry samples than in the water-saturated samples, whereas water did not have a significant effect on the dynamic compressive strength. Furthermore, compared to static loading conditions, the mechanical strength and Young's modulus under dynamic loading tests were significantly higher. Our results suggest that the effect of water on mechanical properties varies with the loading rate and testing method. This provides insight into how water content and loading rate affect rock mechanical properties and behaviour.

RESUMO Foi atendida uma vaca da raça Girolando, de nove anos de idade, de aptidão leiteira, pesando aproximadamente 400kg e com histórico de aumento de volume na região parotídea e submandibular direita. Diante do prognóstico desfavorável, o animal foi submetido à eutanásia e encaminhado para exame anatomopatológico. Fragmentos da glândula parótida e dos linfonodos alterados foram colhidos e encaminhados para exame histopatológico. À avaliação microscópica, observaram-se acentuada anaplasia, moderada proliferação celular, figuras de mitose atípicas e focos de necrose. O estroma variava de delicado a esquirroso e os limites do tumor eram imprecisos. Esses achados fundamentaram o diagnóstico de carcinoma indiferenciado com metástase em linfonodos. No exame imuno-histoquímico, foram utilizados anticorpos primários monoclonais anti-CK Pan (clone AE1AE3), anti-CK alto peso molecular (clone 34βE12), anti-CK19 (clone RCK108), antivimentina (clone V9), anti-S100 (policlonal) e antirreceptor de andrógenos (policlonal). As células neoplásicas apresentaram imunomarcação para todos os anticorpos testados, resultado que favorece o diagnóstico de adenocarcinoma de glândula salivar. Embora raro em bovinos, o adenocarcinoma de glândula salivar deve ser considerado no diagnóstico diferencial de doenças que cursam com aumento de volume na cabeça, linfadenopatia salivação, disfagia e emagrecimento progressivo.

ABSTRACT A 9-year-old Girolando dairy cow, weighing 400kg, with a history of increased volume in the right parotid region, which extended to the submandibular region, was assisted. Fine needle aspiration cytology was performed, and the cytological findings were consistent with malignant neoplasm of epithelial origin (carcinoma). Because of the unfavorable prognosis, the animal was euthanized and submitted to an anatomopathological examination. Samples of the increased parotid and affected lymph nodes were collected for histopathological evaluation. The microscopic changes were accentuated features of anaplasia, moderate cell proliferation, atypical mitotic figures, and necrosis. Stroma ranged from delicate to scirrhous, and the tumor boundaries were not distinct. These findings substantiated the preliminary histomorphological diagnosis of undifferentiated carcinoma with metastasis in lymph nodes. Immunohistochemical tests were performed with anti-CK Pan (clone AE1AE3), anti-CK HMW (clone 34βE12), anti-CK19 (clone RCK108), anti-vimentin (clone V9), anti-S100 (polyclonal), and anti-androgen (polyclonal) antibodies. The immunophenotype favored the diagnosis of salivary gland adenocarcinoma. Despite the rareness in cattle, salivary gland adenocarcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of diseases that occur with increased volume in the head, lymphadenopathy, drooling, dysphagia, and progressive weight loss.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou a avaliação dos efeitos dos diferentes tempos de espera e da posição das caixas de transporte no caminhão sobre perfil bioquímico e hematológico, além de parâmetros físicos da carne, como cor e pH do peito, de frangos de corte. Os tratamentos foram definidos pelos animais abatidos com zero, duas, quatro e seis horas de espera no abatedouro, posicionados nas partes superior e inferior do caminhão. Como resultado, verificou-se que o aumento do tempo de espera no abatedouro, acima de duas horas, resultou em redução no número de linfócitos, elevação da razão heterófilos/ linfócitos (H/L) e de basófilos no hemograma. Houve aumento da atividade de lactato desidrogenase (LDH), dos níveis de colesterol e redução de triglicerídeos e glicose no plasma. O posicionamento das caixas na parte superior da carroceria do caminhão elevou a enzima creatina quinase (CK) sanguínea. Além disso, o tempo prolongado na área de espera aumentou o pH final e o valor de a* (teor de vermelho) e diminuiu a luminosidade dos filés. A interação significante dos fatores tempo de espera de quatro e seis horas e a posição superior das caixas de transporte propiciaram o desenvolvimento de carnes duras, firmes e escuras (DFD) em frangos de corte.

ABSTRACT An investigation was made into the effects of different lairage times and the position of chicken crates during transport to the slaughterhouse on the biochemical and hematological profile and physical parameters of broilers, such as color and pH of their breast meat. The treatments were defined by the animals slaughtered after 0, 2, 4 and 6 hours of lairage time at the slaughterhouse, transported in crates located in the top and bottom layers of the truck. It was found that increasing the lairage time at the slaughterhouse to over two hours reduced the number of lymphocytes and increased the heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio and the basophil count in the hemogram. In addition, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and cholesterol levels increased and plasma triglyceride and glucose levels decreased. The position of the crates in the truck altered the creatine kinase (CK) activity, and the highest enzyme activity was found in birds transported in the top layer of crates in the truck. Furthermore, the long lairage time in the slaughterhouse increased the pH and the value of a* (redness value) and decreased the lightness value of breast fillets. The interaction significant between 4 and 6 hours of lairage time and the position of the crate in the top layer of the truck favored the development of dark, firm, dry (DFD) meat.

RESUMO O plasmocitoma extramedular (PEM) não cutâneo é um distúrbio mieloproliferativo de plasmócitos que raramente acomete felinos. Este trabalho descreve um caso de PEM no músculo esquelético de um gato, macho, sem raça definida, de oito meses de idade, que apresentava um aumento de volume no membro pélvico esquerdo. A citologia aspirativa por agulha fina (CAAF) da massa revelou tratar-se de PEM. O teste imunoenzimático rápido confirmou a presença do vírus da leucemia felina (FeLV). Na necropsia do animal, macroscopicamente, percebeu-se que o nódulo era originário do músculo semimembranoso. O exame histopatológico ratificou os achados citológicos. Desta forma, alerta-se para a existência de plasmocitoma com localização em músculo esquelético na espécie felina, sendo a CAAF um método alternativo rápido e eficaz para o seu diagnóstico.

ABSTRACT Extramedullary noncutaneous plasmacytoma (ENP) is a myeloproliferative disorder of plasma cells that rarely affects cats. This paper describes an ENP case revealed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the mass in the skeletal muscle of an 8-month-old, male, mixed breed cat, which had a nodule in the left hind limb. The rapid immunoassay test confirmed the presence of feline leukemia virus (FeLV). The animal necropsy macroscopically showed the nodule came from the semimembranosus muscle. Histopathological examination ratified the cytological findings. Thus, this paper alerts to the existence of plasmacytoma located in the skeletal muscle of feline species. FNAC is a quick and efficient method for diagnosis of ENP.

RESUMO Normalmente, os produtos agrícolas têm suas dimensões reduzidas durante o processo de secagem. A quantificação da redução dessas dimensões é importante para o desenvolvimento e otimização de equipamentos destinados à pós-colheita do produto. Em virtude disto, objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, avaliar o efeito da variação do teor de água durante a secagem sobre a contração volumétrica dos grãos de cártamo e de seus respectivos eixos. Foram utilizados grãos de cártamo colhidos com teor de água inicial de aproximadamente 0,445 decimal b.s. (base seca) e submetidos à secagem em estufa com circulação forçada de ar, na temperatura de 40 °C, até os grãos atingirem o teor de água final de 0,073 ± 0,008 decimal b.s. Durante a secagem, os índices de contração dos eixos e contração volumétrica unitária e da massa de grãos de cártamo foram determinados em diferentes teores de água. Com base nos resultados obtidos pode-se concluir que a redução do teor de água causa redução dos eixos dos grãos de cártamo; consequentemente, a redução dos valores do índice de contração volumétrica da massa e unitária de aproximadamente 16 e 13%, respectivamente, em que ambas as variáveis podem ser representadas pelo modelo de contração linear.

ABSTRACT Agricultural products usually have their size reduced during the drying process. The quantification of the reduction in the dimensions is important for the development and optimization of equipment for the post-harvest of the product. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the variation in the moisture content during drying on the volumetric shrinkage of safflower grains and their respective axes. Safflower grains were harvested with an initial moisture content of approximately 0.445 decimal d.b. (dry basis) and subjected to drying in an oven with forced air circulation at 40 °C, until the grains reached a final moisture content of 0.073 ± 0.008 decimal d.b. During drying, the contraction of the axes, unit volumetric shrinkage and volumetric shrinkage of the mass of safflower grains were determined at different moisture contents. Based on these results, it can be concluded that reducing the moisture content causes a reduction in the axes of safflower grains and, consequently, reductions in the unit volumetric shrinkage and volumetric shrinkage of the mass of approximately 16 and 13%, respectively, and both variables can be represented by the linear shrinkage model.

A padronização de técnicas e o teste da associação do Plasma Rico em Plaquetas (PRP) e das Células-Tronco Mononucleares (CTMs) na consolidação de falhas ósseas corticais, por meio de avaliação clínica, biomecânica, radiológica e histológica, é avaliada em um estudo piloto. Foram utilizados seis cães adultos, fêmeas, sem raça definida, pesando entre 5 e 10kg, separados por sorteio aleatório em seis tratamentos. Foi confeccionada uma falha elíptica de 1,0x0,4cm na cortical medial diafisária da tíbia direita de cada animal, sendo preenchida de acordo com o tratamento proposto. No cão I, a falha foi preenchida com solução fisiológica (SF); no II, com o PRP; no III, com a fração total das células mononucleares (FTCM); no IV, com a fração vascular estromal (FVE); no V, com o PRP associado à FTCM; no VI, com a associação PRP e FVE. Foram realizadas avaliações: clínicas, diariamente; dos graus de claudicação, semanalmente; radiológica e perimetria da coxa, antes, no pós-operatório imediato, aos 7, 14, 21 e 30 dias; biomecânica, antes do procedimento, aos 10, 20 e 30 dias; e biópsias, aos 15 e 30 dias. A FTCM obteve uma contagem e viabilidade média de 2,0x108cél. e 90%, respectivamente, enquanto a FVE obteve 3x106cél. e 50%. O PRP concentrou, em média, sete vezes o número inicial de plaquetas do sangue total, de 250.000 µl-1 plaquetas no sangue total para 1.750.000 µl-1 plaquetas no PRP. Obteve-se padronização adequada de técnicas, possibilitando o teste da associação entre as células-tronco mononucleares (CTMs) e o plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP), assim como seu uso isolado, no reparo de falhas ósseas corticais, indicando a possibilidade de a associação FTCM e PRP ser o melhor tratamento.

The standardization of techniques and tests of the association of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Mononuclear Stem Cells (MSCs) in the consolidation of cortical bone defects by clinical, biomechanical, radiological, and histological analysis is evaluated in a pilot study. Six adult female dogs of mixed breed, weighing between 5 and 10kg, separated by random draw in six treatments were used. An elliptical failure of 1.0 x0.4cm was done in the medial diaphyseal cortical of the right tibia of each animal, that was filled according with the proposed treatment. In dog I, the failure was filled with saline (S), in dog II with PRP, in dog III with total mononuclear cell fraction (TMCF), in dog IV with stromal vascular fraction (SVF), in dog V with association of PRP and TMCF, and in dog VI with an association of PRP and SVF. Daily clinical evaluation, weekly degrees of lameness, radiological and girth before, immediate postoperative, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days, biomechanics before the procedure, at 10, 20 and 30 days, and biopsies at 15 and 30 days were performed. The TMCF got a count and viability of 2,0x108cells and 90% respectively, while for SVF it was 3x106cells and 50%, respectively. The PRP concentrated on average seven times the original number of platelets from whole blood, platelets from whole blood 250.000 μl-1to 1.750.000 μl-1platelets in PRP. This afforded adequate standardization of techniques, enabling the test of association between mononuclear stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma(PRP), as well as their separate use to repair cortical bone defects, indicating the possibility of the association between FTCM and PRP to be the best treatment.

The objective was to evaluate three forage Panicum maximum 'Aruana', Panicum maximum Jacq. 'Massai' and Brachiaria hybrid 'Mulato'. The quality of the Massai proved to be lower, with low crude protein, high NDF, ADF high and low digestibility. Mulato has already had results similar Aruana and different statistically Massai to all the parameters of quality assessed. It was concluded that the cultivar Massai presents nutritional value lower than the cultivars Aruana and Mulato, while the latter maintained good nutritional levels, even during the dry season.

Objetivou-se avaliar a disponibilidade e valor nutritivo de três forrageiras Panicum maximum 'Aruana', Panicum maximum Jacq. 'Massai' e Brachiaria hibrida 'Mulato', com ovinos em pastejo contínuo. A qualidade do Massai foi inferior em relação às outras duas gramíneas, com baixo teor de PB, alto de FDN, alto de FDA e baixa DIVMO. Já o Mulato foi semelhante ao Aruana e diferentes estatisticamente ao Massai para todos os parâmetros avaliados. Conclui-se que o cultivar Massai apresenta valor nutricional inferior ao cultivares Mulato e Aruana, enquanto estes últimos mantiveram bons níveis nutricionais, inclusive durante o período seco.

Avaliou-se a utilização de células-tronco mononucleares (CTM) na cicatrização de defeito ósseo experimental como alternativa aos métodos convencionais, analisando-se o tempo de evolução cicatricial e a presença dessas células no tecido neoformado. Foram utilizados 18 cães, separados em três grupos (G) de seis, e de cada animal foram colhidas células da medula óssea (MO), contadas e analisadas para morfometria, por meio da contagem manual e mielograma. Um defeito ósseo tibial foi então criado cirurgicamente, e a lesão tratada com esponja de gelatina embebida em solução fisiológica (G1), esponja de gelatina embebida com aspirado de MO processado (G2) e esponja de gelatina embebida com aspirado de MO processado e proteína óssea morfogenética (rhBMP-2) (G3). A cicatrização foi então avaliada por estudos radiográficos, e a presença de CTM foi identificada por meio de marcadores nanocristais Qtracker, em microscopia com luz fluorescente, uma semana após a intervenção cirúrgica. Entre as células identificadas pelo marcador, foram encontradas células da linhagem óssea. As avaliações radiográficas demonstram crescimento ósseo acelerado nos animais de G2 e G3. Houve diferenças significativas entre o G1 e G3 em todos os tempos estudados, e entre G1 e G2 nos tempos de 30 e 45 dias. A utilização de CTM adultas suplementadas ou não com rhBMP-2 é alternativa favorável ao crescimento ósseo em defeitos experimentais agudos de tíbia de cães.

Mononuclear stem cells (MSC) were experimentally implanted in bone defect, as an alternative to the conventional methods, in order to evaluate the healing speed, and the presence of these cells in the new-born tissue. Bone marrow (BM) was collected from 18 dogs, and then counted and morphometrically analyzed by manual count and myelogram. The dogs were separated in three groups (G) of six animals each. A tibial bone defect was surgically made in each dog and the wound was treated with gelatin sponge and physiologic solution (G1), gelatin sponge and processed BM (G2), and gelatin sponge, processed BM, and rhBMP-2 (G3). The healing was evaluated by radiographic study and the presence of MSC was microscopically identified by Qtracker nanocrystal labeler with a fluorescent light one week after the surgery. Cells from the bone lineage were found among the labeled cells. The radiographic evaluations demonstrated a speed up in bone growth in dogs from G2 and G3, and significant differences were found between G1 and G3 dogs, in all studied periods; and between G1 and G2 animals at 30 and 45 days. The rhBMP-2 supplemented or not-supplemented adult MSC are favorable alternatives to the bone growth in the healing process of acute experimental-induced tibial defects in dogs.

The aim of this study is to discuss complementary therapies in Brazil looking towards comprehensive individual care and the nurse’s professional inclusion in this practice. The biomedical model is based in the traditional medical vision, taking into account only biological factors. The interest in complementary therapies as opposed to the present model and allopathic practices is on the increase, and the general population has shown a growing interest in them. These practices aim essentially at comprehensive care, promoting the assisted individual’s health. In 2006 the Brazilian Ministry of Health implemented the National Policy of Comprehensive and Complementary Practices in the Unified Health System seeking comprehensive care. Because nursing aims at the individual’s comprehensive care, complementary therapies coincide with this view, reshaping the idea the professional has about the individual, seeing him as a whole and indivisible being.

O objetivo desta reflexão é discutir o uso das terapias complementares no Brasil, visando um atendimento integral ao indivíduo e a inserção do profissional enfermeiro nestas práticas. O modelo biomédico é embasado pela visão médica tradicional, considerando apenas fatores biológicos. O interesse pelas terapias complementares contrapondo-se ao modelo e as práticas alopáticas vêm ampliando-se, sendo cada vez mais procuradas por todas as camadas da população. Estas têm como um dos seus objetivos o atendimento integral, promovendo a saúde do indivíduo assistido. Em 2006 no Brasil, o Ministério da Saúde implementou a Política Nacional de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares no Sistema Único de Saúde, em busca desta integralidade. Devido à enfermagem buscar o atendimento integral do indivíduo. As terapias complementares vêm ao encontro com deste discurso, modificando a visão que o profissional tem sobre o indivíduo, vendo-o com um ser total e não compartimentalizado.

El objetivo de esta reflexión es discutir el uso de las terapias complementarias en Brasil cara a una atención integral al individuo y la inserción del profesional enfermero en estas prácticas. El modelo biomédico se basa en la visión médica tradicional, considerando sólo factores biológicos. El interés por las terapias complementarias contraponiéndose al modelo y a las prácticas alopáticas ha ido ampliándose y son cada vez más demandadas por todas las capas de la población. Éstas tienen como uno de sus objetivos la atención integral, promoviendo la salud del individuo asistido. En 2006, en Brasil, el Ministerio de la Salud implantó la Política Nacional de Prácticas Integrativas y Complementarias en un Sistema Único de Salud en busca de esta integralidad. Debiendo la enfermería buscar la atención integral del individuo, las terapias complementarias vienen al encuentro de este discurso, modificando la visión que el profesional tiene acerca del individuo, viéndolo como un ser total y no como un ser fragmentario.

The present study investigates the antinociceptive effect of the pyrazolyl-thiazole derivative 2-(5-trichloromethyl-5-hydroxy-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1 H-pyrazol-1-yl)-4-(4-bromophenyl)-5-methylthiazole (B50) in mice. Male albino Swiss mice (30-40 g) were used in the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhes and tail-immersion tests. B50 caused dose-dependent antinociception (8, 23 and 80 µmol/kg, sc) in the acetic acid writhing assay (number of writhes: vehicle: 27.69 ± 6.15; B50 (8 µmol/kg): 16.92 ± 3.84; B50 (23 µmol/kg): 13.85 ± 3.84; B50 (80 µmol/kg): 9.54 ± 3.08; data are reported as means ± SEM for 9 animals per group). On the other hand, B50 did not cause antinociception in the tail immersion assay. Naloxone (2.75 µmol/kg, sc) prevented B50-induced antinociception (number of writhes: vehicle-saline: 31.11 ± 3.15; vehicle-naloxone: 27.41 ± 3.70; B50 (80 µmol/kg)-saline: 8.70 ± 3.33; B50 (80 µmol/kg)-naloxone: 31.84 ± 4.26; morphine-saline: 2.04 ± 3.52; morphine-naloxone: 21.11 ± 4.26; 8-9 animals per group). The removal of the methyl group of the thiazole ring of B50 or substitution of the bromo substituent with the methyl at position 4 of the phenyl group, which is attached to the thiazole ring of B50, resulted in loss of activity, suggesting that these substituents are important for antinociceptive activity. B50 had no effect on spontaneous locomotion or rotarod performance, indicating that the antinociceptive effect of B50 is not related to nonspecific motor effects. The antinociceptive profile of B50 seems to be closer to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs than to classic opioid agents, since it had no analgesic effect in a thermally motivated test.

The antinociceptive effect of six novel synthetic pyrazolines (3-ethoxymethyl-5-ethoxycarbonyl-1H-pyrazole (Pz 1) and its corresponding 1-substituted methyl (Pz 2) and phenyl (Pz 3) analogues, and 3-(1-ethoxyethyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-1H-pyrazole (Pz 4) and its corresponding 1-substituted methyl (Pz 5) and phenyl (Pz 6) analogues) was evaluated by the tail immersion test in adult male albino mice. The animals (N = 11-12 in each group) received vehicle (5% Tween 80, 10 ml/kg, sc) or 1.5 mmol/kg of each of the pyrazolines (Pz 1-Pz 6), sc. Fifteen, thirty and sixty minutes after drug administration, the mice were subjected to the tail immersion test. Thirty minutes after drug administration Pz 2 and Pz 3 increased tail withdrawal latency (vehicle = 3.4 ± 0.2; Pz 2 = 5.2 ± 0.4; Pz 3 = 5.9 ± 0.4 s; mean ± SEM), whereas the other pyrazolines did not present antinociceptive activity. Dose-effect curves (0.15 to 1.5 mmol/kg) were constructed for the bioactive pyrazolines. Pz 2 (1.5 mmol/kg, sc) impaired motor coordination in the rotarod and increased immobility in the open-field test. Pz 3 did not alter rotarod performance and spontaneous locomotion, but increased immobility in the open field at the dose of 1.5 mmol/kg. The involvement of opioid mechanisms in the pyrazoline-induced antinociception was investigated by pretreating the animals with naloxone (2.75 µmol/kg, sc). Naloxone prevented Pz 3- but not Pz 2-induced antinociception. Moreover, naloxone pretreatment did not alter Pz 3-induced immobility. We conclude that Pz 3-induced antinociception involves opioid mechanisms but this is not the case for Pz 2.
