Screener, a board game supplemented with online resources, was introduced and distributed by the Brazilian Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics to postgraduate programs as an instructional tool for the process of drug discovery and development (DDD). In this study, we provided a comprehensive analysis of five critical aspects for evaluating the quality of educational games, namely: 1) description of the intervention; 2) underlying pedagogical theory; 3) identification of local educational gaps; 4) impact on diverse stakeholders; and 5) elucidation of iterative quality enhancement processes. We also present qualitative and quantitative assessments of the effectiveness of this game in 11 postgraduate courses. We employed the MEEGA+ online survey, comprising thirty-three close-ended unipolar items with 5-point Likert-type response scales, to assess student perceptions of the quality and utility of Screener. Based on 115 responses, the results indicated a highly positive outlook among students. In addition, we performed a preliminary evaluation of learning outcomes in two courses involving 28 students. Pre- and post-quizzes were applied, each consisting of 20 True/False questions directly aligned with the game's content. The analysis revealed significant improvement in students' performance following engagement with the game, with scores rising from 8.4 to 13.3 (P<0.0001, paired t-test) and 9.7 to 12.7 (P<0.0001, paired t-test). These findings underscore the utility of Screener as an enjoyable and effective tool for facilitating a positive learning experience in the DDD process. Notably, the game can also reduce the educational disparities across different regions of our continental country.

Abstract Herbarium-based studies and extensive field work revealed the existence of a new species in the genus Manihot which is restricted to the municipality of Itirapina, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Characteristics such as the size and morphology of the leaves and bracts were important to recognize M. irregularis as a new taxon. Description, illustration, as well as comments on its morphology, distribution, conservation status, and a key for the identification of Manihot species for the state of São Paulo are presented.

Abstract This study investigated the renal function of soccer players after an entire game-season. Thirty-five athletes recruited to play for the Macae Futebol Clube were invited for this study, of which 18 athletes completed the entire game season. Blood and 24-hour urine were collected at the beginning (Pre-Season) and the end of the game season (Post-Season). Kidney functions were assessed by calculating the urinary excretion, clearance, and fractional excretion of the selected solutes. Plasma creatinine, sodium, total protein, and osmolality were lower in the Post-Season . In contrast, plasma urea was higher in the Post-Season period. Urinary excretion of urea was reduced while albumin excretion was higher in comparison to Pre-Season. The clearances of creatinine, total proteins, and albumin were higher in the Post-Season period. In accordance, the fractional excretion of albumin increased. On the other hand, the clearance and fractional excretion of urea was lower in the Post-Season period. These results show that soccer-associated exercise throughout the entire game-season induces kidney functions adaptations that may prevent dehydration in these athletes through increased urea reabsorption to conserve water. In addition, this data corroborates to increased glomerular permeability to plasma proteins, such as albumin, that soccer players may experience.

RESUMO O presente estudo avaliou o perfil mineral de Cálcio (Ca), Cobre (Cu) e Zinco (Zn) no estojo córneo pré e pós-desmame e sua associação com pigmentação, gênero e idade de potros da raça Crioula criados em pastagens nativas no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram coletadas amostras do casco de potros da raça Crioula 41 dias pré e 28 dias pós-desmame. Os teores de Ca, Cu e Zn variaram no casco fetal (571,0±39,4; 14,5±7,6 e 130,0±30,5mg/kg, respectivamente; P<0,05) e no definitivo (653,0±169,2; 33,8±11,5 e 69,3±36,8mg/kg, respectivamente; P<0,05), no pré (620,0±184; 17,2±21,2 e 103,0±75,5mg/kg, respectivamente; P<0,05) e no pós-desmame (517,5±181; 0 e 79,0±41,7mg/kg, respectivamente; P<0,05). Houve associação positiva (P<0,05) com a faixa etária no pré-desmame para Ca (r=0,5) e Cu (r=0,57), e negativa para Zn (r=-0,69; P<0,05). No pós-desmame, houve associação positiva (P<0,05) para Ca (r=0,36) e Zn (r=0,64) e negativa para Cu (r=-0,39; P<0,05). Tanto a pigmentação quanto o gênero não afetaram o perfil mineral. Conclui-se que há diferenças nas concentrações de Ca, Cu e Zn na epiderme do casco de potros da raça Crioula no pré e pós-desmame, independentemente da pigmentação e do gênero, onde as concentrações de Ca e Cu aumentam com a idade, enquanto as de Zn diminuem.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the mineral profile of Ca, Cu and Zn in the hoof horny capsule at pre and post-weaning and its association with pigmentation, gender and age range of Crioulo foals raised in native pastures in RS. Samples were collected from the epidermis of the Crioulo foal's hoof at two times, 41 pre and 28 post-weaning. The contents of Ca, Cu, Zn Varied in the fetal hoof ( 571.0±139.4, 14.5±7.6 and 130.0±30.5mg/kg, respectively, P<0.05) and definitive (653.0±169.2, 33.8±11.5 and 69.3±36.8mg/kg, respectively, P<0.05), in the pre (620.0±184, 17.2±21.2 and103.0±75.5mg/kg, respectively, P<0.05) and post-weaning (517.5±181, 0.1 and 79.0±41.7mg/kg, respectively, P<0.05).There was a positive association (P<0.05) with a preweaning age for Ca (r=0.5) and Cu (r=0.57) and negative for Zn (r=-0.69, P<0.05). In the post weaning there was a positive association (P<0.05) for Ca (r=0.36) and Zn (r=0.64) and negative for Cu (r=-0.39; P<0.05). Neither pigmentation nor gender affected the mineral profile. It is concluded that there are differences in Ca, Cu, Zn concentrations in the epidermis of foals of the crioulo breed at the pre and post weaning, regardless of pigmentation and sex, where Ca and Cu concentrations increase with age, while Zn concentrations decrease.

Abstract Noise is one of the main physical agents in the rural work environment and it can be harmful to the health of workers exposed to it. Thus, research on the spatialization of noise emitted by agricultural machinery can help minimize harmful health effects. This study sets out to evaluate the spatial distribution of the noise emitted by an agricultural tractor with and without the activation of a rotary cutter. A wave model geostatistical analysis was used to identify healthy working zones according to current legislation. The experiment was carried out using a 75 hp tractor at 2000 rpm with the rotary cutter on the on and off modes. A digital sound level meter was used to register noise in a regular 2.0 x 2.0 m sample mesh within a 10-meter radius. The semivariogram was adjusted using the weighted least squares method, wave model and kriging interpolation to obtain the maps. The magnitude and spatial structure of the noise emitted by the tractor were identified. The results show that the equipment produced noise levels above the limits recommended by Brazilian regulatory standard NR 15. Thus, both the machine operator and the workers involved in the operation should use Personal Protective Equipment.

RESUMO Trauma ou lesões causadas por doenças podem enfraquecer e degenerar os tecidos humanos e animais. O uso de biomateriais para reparação direta ou indireta surgiu como uma alternativa promissora e tornou-se um importante tema de pesquisa. O óleo de pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) mostrou propriedades antifúngicas, antibacterianas, anti-inflamatórias, curativas, antitumorais e antioxidantes. O objetivo deste estudo foi obter um novo biomaterial, produzido pela combinação de óleo de pequi, colágeno e gelatina, para avaliar sua biocompatibilidade em comparação às membranas produzidas sem o óleo. As membranas foram preparadas por meio da mistura de colágeno de tendão bovino, gelatina comercial e óleo de pequi. Os processos inflamatórios e cicatriciais foram avaliados por histopatologia da interface / implantes de tecido subcutâneo de ratos Wistar para avaliação quantitativa da produção de leucócitos e colágeno. Observou-se que a presença de óleo de pequi reduziu a quantidade de células gigantes de corpo estranho e favoreceu o recrutamento de fibroblastos (P<0,01), promovendo, assim, maior produção da membrana de colágeno em comparação com a membrana de controle. Portanto, pode-se concluir que a adição de óleo de pequi melhorou a biocompatibilidade do colágeno e acelerou o processo de cicatrização.
ABSTRACT Trauma or disease inflicted by tissue injuries may cause tissue degeneration. The use of biomaterials for direct or indirect repair has emerged as a promising alternative, and has become an important research topic. The pequi fruit (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) has shown antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, healing, antitumor, and antioxidant properties. The objective of this study was to develop a new biomaterial using a combination of collagen, gelatin, and pulp pequi oil, and to evaluate its biocompatibility in comparison with that of biomaterials produced without pulp pequi oil. Membranes were prepared from a mixture of bovine tendon collagen, commercial gelatin, and pulp pequi oil. The inflammatory and cicatricial processes were assessed via histopathology of the tissue interface/implants in the subcutaneous tissues and quantitative evaluation of leukocyte and collagen production in Wistar rats. It was observed that the presence of pequi oil reduced the amount of foreign-body giant cells and favored the recruitment of fibroblasts (P< 0.01), thereby promoting greater production of collagen membrane than that in the membranes of control samples. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of pequi oil improved the biocompatibility of collagen and accelerated the healing process.

RESUMO Concentrados com alta proteína bruta e minerais e com menor concentração de energia poderiam ser utilizados em menores quantidades no balanceamento de dietas com volumosos tropicais. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o consumo de matéria seca, a resposta produtiva e econômica de vacas da raça Girolando mantidas em pastagem de Tifton 85 durante o período de seca, as quais receberam diferentes concentrações de suplementação proteica. Foram utilizadas 12 vacas da raça Girolando em lactação, com produção de leite média inicial de 18,00±1,615kg/dia. Os animais foram distribuídos em três quadrados latinos (4x4), constituídos de quatro tratamentos e quatro períodos experimentais, com duração de 15 dias cada. Os tratamentos consistiram de uma dieta controle, apenas sal mineral e três níveis de suplementação proteica com 40; 50 e 60% de proteína bruta (PB) sendo fornecidas nas quantidades de 2,5kg/animal/dia. Observou-se que os fornecimentos de suplementos proteicos proporcionaram um efeito substitutivo da forragem em relação à suplementação mineral. O uso de suplementação concentrada com teor de 40% de proteína bruta foi mais eficiente em termos produtivos, econômicos e de produção de proteína bruta no leite.
ABSTRACT Concentrates with high crude protein and minerals and lower energy concentration could be used in smaller quantities in balancing diets with tropical bulk. The objective of this study was to evaluate the dry matter intake, the productive and economical response of Girolando cows kept in Tifton 85 pasture during dry season receiving different concentrations of protein supplementation. Twelve lactating Girolando cows with initial mean milk yield of 18.00±1.615kg/day were used. The animals were distributed in three Latin squares (4x4), consisting of four treatments and four experimental periods, each lasting 15 days. The treatments were composed of control diet with only mineral salt, and three levels of protein supplementation with 40, 50, and 60% crude protein (CP) being supplied in the amounts of 2.5kg/animal/day. It was found that the protein supplement supplies provided a substitutive effect of forage relative to mineral supplementation. The use of concentrated supplementation with 40% crude protein content was more efficient in terms of production, production of crude protein in milk and economically.

RESUMO OBJETIVO O diabetes é importante causa de mortalidade cardiovascular. Nos últimos anos, a mortalidade diminuiu substancialmente, mais em diabéticos do que em não diabéticos, em grande parte devido ao controle de outros fatores de risco cardiovasculares. Nosso estudo tem como objetivo analisar o controle de dislipidemia em duas coortes de diabéticos. MÉTODOS Foram estudados pacientes de duas coortes distintas, sendo 173 pacientes do BHS (Brasília Heart Study) e 222 pacientes do BDS (Brazilian Diabetes Study). Os dados sobre controle de dislipidemia foram estudados nas duas populações diferentes. Todos os pacientes eram diabéticos. RESULTADOS Há diferenças significativas em relação às comorbidades entre os grupos de LDL-C no BDS. A média de hemoglobina glicada é de 8,2 no grupo com LDL-C > 100, comparado com 7,7 e 7,5 nos grupos 70-100 e < 70, respectivamente (p = 0,024). Há maior porcentagem de pacientes hipertensos com LDL entre 70-100 (63,9%), quando comparado aos grupos < 70 e > 100 (54,3% e 54,9%, respectivamente; p = 0,005). A pressão diastólica é mais elevada no grupo com LDL > 100, com média de 87 mmHg, comparado com 82,6 mmHg e 81,9 mmHg nos grupos 70-100 e < 70, respectivamente (p = 0,019). O grupo com LDL > 100 tem maior porcentagem de tabagistas (8,7%) quando comparado aos grupos com LDL entre 70-100 e < 70 (5,6% e 4,3%, respectivamente; p = 0,015). Há, também, diferença na incidência prévia de coronariopatia. No grupo com LDL < 70, 28,3% dos pacientes já apresentaram infarto prévio, comparados com 11,1% e 10,6% nos grupos 70-100 e > 100, respectivamente (p < 0,001). CONCLUSÃO Os dados do nosso estudo mostram que o controle de dislipidemia em diabéticos é inadequado, e há uma tendência de associação direta entre descontrole glicêmico e descontrole de dislipidemia, além de associação com outros fatores de risco cardiovascular, como hipertensão diastólica e tabagismo. Esse pior controle pode estar relacionado ao platô no descenso da curva de mortalidade, e o investimento nesse quesito pode melhorar a saúde cardiovascular dos diabéticos.
SUMMARY OBJECTIVE Diabetes is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular mortality. Over the last years, mortality has decreased significantly, more in individuals with diabetes than in healthy ones. That is mostly due to the control of other cardiovascular risk factors. The objective of our study was to analyze the dyslipidemia control in two diabetes cohorts. METHODS Patients from two distinct cohorts were studied, 173 patients from the BHS (Brasília Heart Study) and 222 patients from the BDS (Brazilian Diabetes Study). The data on dyslipidemia control were studied in both different populations. All patients had diabetes. RESULTS There are significant differences concerning comorbidities between the LDL-C and BDS groups. The average glycated hemoglobin is of 8.2 in the LDL-C > 100 group in comparison with 7.7 and 7.5 in the 70-100 and < 70 groups, respectively (p = 0.024). There is a higher percentage of hypertensive patients with LDL between 70-100 (63.9%), when comparing the < 70 and > 100 groups (54.3% and 54.9%, respectively; p = 0.005). Diastolic pressure is higher in the group with LDL > 100, with an average of 87 mmHg, in comparison with 82.6 mmHg and 81.9 mmHg in the 70-100 and < 70 groups, respectively (p = 0.019). The group with LDL > 100 has the greatest percentage of smokers (8.7%) in comparison with the groups with LDL between 70-100 and < 70 (5.6% and 4.3%, respectively; p = 0.015). There is also a difference in the previous incidence of coronaropathy. In the group with LDL < 70, 28.3% of patients had already experienced a previous infarction, compared with 11.1% and 10.6% in the 70-100 and > 100 groups, respectively (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The data in our study have shown that the dyslipidemia control in diabetic patients is inadequate and there is a tendency of direct association between lack of blood glucose control and lack of dyslipidemia control, in addition to the association with other cardiovascular risk factors, such as diastolic hypertension and smoking. This worsened control might be related to the plateau in the descending curve of mortality, and investments in this regard can improve the cardiovascular health in diabetic patients.

ABSTRACT Exercise dependence is characterized by a craving to engage in physical exercise in free time - either as part of another disorder or as an end in itself, resulting in an emotional and time commitment. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate the association and similarity of exercise dependence and body image traits among military Brazilian students of physical education. Participated in the study 45 students of the Physical Education Instructor Course of the Physical Education School of the Army, all men. The Brazilian versions of the Exercise Dependence Scale, Swansea Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire, Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale, Social Physics Anxiety Scale and Physical Appearance Perfectionism Scale were voluntarily answered by the participants at the beginning of the course. About 70% of the sample was characterized as risk of non-dependence symptomatic and 18% risk of muscular dysmorphia. Cluster analysis indicated five groups of similar factors. The first, formed exclusively by the exercise dependence factors. The second, formed by factors of exercise dependence, physical appearance perfectionism and social physique anxiety. The third group consists only of muscular dysmorphic factors. The fourth, by exercise dependency factors and the factor hope for perfection. Finally, the fifth cluster was formed exclusively by the factors of the drive for muscularity. We hope this research can support other longitudinal, experimental, and cross-cultural studies.
RESUMO A dependência do exercício se caracteriza pela ânsia em praticar exercício físico no tempo livre - seja como parte de um outro transtorno seja como fim em si mesmo, que resulta em um comprometimento emocional e de tempo destinado a essa prática. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar a associação e dissimilaridade da dependência do exercício com dos traços da imagem corporal entre estudantes brasileiros militares de educação física. Participaram do estudo 45 alunos do Curso de Instrutor de Educação Física da Escola de Educação Física do Exército, todos homens. As versões brasileiras da Exercise Dependence Scale, Swansea Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire, Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale, Social Physique Anxiety Scale e Physical Appearance Perfectionism Scale foram voluntariamente respondidos pelos participantes no início do curso. Em torno de 70% da amostra foi caracterizada como risco de não dependência sintomática e 18% em risco de dismorfia muscular. A análise de cluster indicou 5 grupos de fatores similares. O primeiro, formado exclusivamente pelos fatores de dependência do exercício. O segundo, formado por fatores da dependência do exercício, perfeccionismo com a aparência e ansiedade físico social. O terceiro formado apenas por fatores da dismorfia muscular. O quarto, por fatores de dependência do exercício e pelo fator esperança com a perfeição. Por fim, o quinto cluster foi formado exclusivamente pelos fatores do drive for muscularity. Esperamos que esta pesquisa possa subsidiar outras pesquisas longitudinais, experimentais e estudos transculturais.
RESUMEN La dependencia del ejercicio se caracteriza por el ansia en el ejercicio físico en el tiempo libre, sea como parte de otro trastorno o como un fin en sí mismo, que resulta en un compromiso emocional y de tiempo destinado a esa práctica. Así, el objetivo de esta investigación fue hacer la evaluación de la asociación y la similitud de la dependencia del ejercicio con los rasgos de la imagen corporal entre estudiantes brasileños militares de educación física. Han participado en el estudio 45 estudiantes del Curso de Instructor de Educación Física de la Escola de Educação Física do Exército, todos varones. Las versiones brasileñas de Exercise Dependence Scale, Swansea Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire, Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale, Social Physicque Anxiety Scale y Physical Appearance Perfectionism Scale fueron voluntariamente respondidos por los participantes al inicio del curso. En torno al 70% de la muestra se caracterizó como riesgo de no dependencia sintomática y 18% en riesgo de dismorfia muscular. El análisis de conglomerados indicó cinco grupos de factores similares. El primero, formado exclusivamente por los factores de dependencia del ejercicio. El segundo, formado por factores de la dependencia del ejercicio, perfeccionismo con la apariencia y ansiedad física social. El tercero formado sólo por factores de la dismorfia muscular. El cuarto, por factores de dependencia del ejercicio y por el factor esperanza con la perfección. Por último, el quinto cluster fue formado exclusivamente por los factores del drive formuscularity. Esperamos que esta investigación pueda subsidiar otras investigaciones longitudinales, experimentales y estudios transculturales.

Emergence of Razor Grass on the Basis of Origin and Seed Depth in the Soil Profile

RESUMO: O capim-navalha ( Paspalum virgatum L.) é uma planta daninha de pastagens que tem ganhado importância devido à elevada capacidade de multiplicação por sementes, principalmente quando se faz necessária a reforma. O entendimento do comportamento da emergência de plântulas é de fundamental importância para a adoção de estratégias de manejo dessa planta daninha. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o padrão de emergência de plântulas de capim-navalha em função da profundidade da semente no solo. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis repetições, e os tratamentos, dispostos em esquema fatorial 11 x 3, sendo 11 profundidades de semeadura (superfície; 1,0; 2,0; 3,0; 4,0; 5,0; 6,0; 7,0; 8,0; 9,0; e 10,0 cm) e três ecótipos (Rondonópolis, Redenção e Cacoal). O efeito da origem e da profundidade da semente no solo foi avaliado pela porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, frequência relativa de emergência, tempo médio de emergência e sincronia de emergência de plântulas obtidas ao longo de 35 dias após a semeadura. As sementes do ecótipo Rondonópolis possuem maior vigor que as do ecótipo Redenção, que por sua vez possuem maior vigor que as do ecótipo Cacoal. As maiores porcentagem, uniformidade e velocidade de emergência de plântulas foram obtidas com as sementes localizadas na superfície do solo, independentemente da origem da semente. Não ocorre emergência de plântulas quando as sementes procedentes de Rondonópolis e Cacoal estão em profundidades iguais ou superiores a 8,0 cm, e as de Redenção, em profundidades iguais ou superiores a 7,0 cm.
ABSTRACT: Razor grass (Paspalum virgatum L) is one weed that has gain importance because of its high seed production capability, mainly when pasture fields need to be renewed. Understanding seedling emergence behavior is crucial to devise strategies to manage this weed. This trial was carried out to evaluate the emergence pattern of razor grass seedlings on the basis of seed depth in the soil profile. The experiment was conducted in a green-house in a completely randomized design, with six replications. The treatments performed in a 11 x 3 factorial arrangement: eleven seeding depths (surface, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0 cm) by three ecotypes (Rondonópolis, Redenção and Cacoal, Brazil). The effect of origin and seed depth was measured by number of emerged seedlings, emergence speed index, relative emergence frequency, mean emergence time and emergence synchrony of seedlings at 35 days after planting. The seeds of ecotype Rondonópolis had higher vigor than those of ecotype Redenção, which had higher vigor that the ones of ecotype Cacoal. The highest seedling emergence percentage, uniformity and speed were found when the seeds were located at the soil surface, regardless of seed origin. There was no seedling emergence when the seeds of ecotypes Rondonópolis and Cacoal were located at a depth equal to or higher than 8.0 cm; and of ecotype Redenção when they were at a depth equal or higher than 7.0 cm.

ABSTRACT Leishmania infantum is an etiologic agent of visceral leishmaniasis. This disease is a neglected disease that can be fatal if not treated and additionally, the few therapeutic option present several drawbacks, including difficult route of administration and toxicity, which turn the search for new therapeutic alternatives necessary. Herein, we evaluated the leishmanicidal in vitro activity of the solanum extract from Solanum lycocarpum A. St.-Hil., Solanaceae, and the isolated alkaloids solasodine, solamargine and solasonine against promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes of L. infantum. Solasodine (IC50-pro = 4.7 µg/ml; IC50-ama = 10.8 µg/ml) and solamargine (IC50-pro = 8.1 µg/ml; IC50-ama = 3.0 µg/ml) exhibited interesting leishmanicidal ativity. Solasonine was approximately four-times (Selective Index 3.7) more selective to the parasite than to the host cells. This data suggest that solasonine might be considered as a potential drug candidate for leishmaniasis treatment.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de duas categorias de bovinos terminados em pastagem com suplementação em duas ofertas de forragem no desempenho, na qualidade da carcaça e da carne. Foram utilizados 36 bovinos Guzerá, 18 novilhos e 18 novilhas, com idade inicial de 20 meses de idade. Observou-se diferença significativa no ganho de peso diário para categoria animal e ofertas de forragem, que foram superiores nos machos e nos animais submetidos à oferta alta de forragem. Os novilhos apresentaram maior peso final, peso de carcaça e rendimento de dianteiro em comparação com as novilhas, embora o rendimento do traseiro tenha sido maior para as novilhas, entretanto as ofertas de forragem não influenciaram essas características. Não houve diferenças estatísticas para rendimento de carcaça, área de olho de lombo, espessura de gordura subcutânea e marmorização para categorias de animais e ofertas de forragem. Quanto à composição química, a carne de novilhos não diferiu das novilhas. Os animais submetidos à alta oferta de forragem tiveram aumento no extrato etéreo e pH, redução na porcentagem de proteína. Conclui-se que a categoria animal e os níveis de forragem alteram o desempenho animal, melhorando, assim, o desempenho nos machos e nos bovinos submetidos à alta oferta de forragem.
ABSTRACT The objective this paper was to evaluate the effect of two categories of beef finished in pasture with supplementation with two herbage allowance on performance, carcass and meat characteristics. Thirty-six Guzera cattle were used, 18 steers and 18 heifers with an initial age of 20 months. There was significant difference in daily weight gain for animal category and the herbage allowance, which were higher in males and animals submitted to high herbage allowance. Steers showed higher final weight, carcass weight and forequarter yield compared with the heifers, although the hindquarter yield was higher in the heifers, however the herbage allowance did not influence these characteristics. There were not statistical differences for carcass yield, ribeye area, backfat thickness and marbling score for the animal categories and herbage allowance. The meat chemical composition of the steers did not differ of the heifers, however, the animals submitted to high herbage allowance was increase in ether extract and pH, decrease in protein percentage. It was concluded that the animal category and the herbage allowance changed the animal performance, improving performance in males and cattle submitted to high herbage allowance.

RESUMO: O uso intensivo de pesticidas, como os herbicidas diuron e hexazinone, levam a uma preocupação quanto à preservação da qualidade da água dos recursos hídricos destinados ao consumo humano. Atualmente, as técnicas convencionais de tratamento de água não possuem alta capacidade de remover os herbicidas; portanto, surge a necessidade de estudar outras técnicas. O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a eficiência de remoção dos herbicidas diuron e hexazinone presentes na água, através de um sistema de filtração comercial. O estudo foi realizado em um sistema de filtração composto pela seguinte sequência de filtros: filtro de areia e carvão granular ativado de casca de coco, filtro polipropileno de 20 mm, filtro de carvão ativado com sais de prata, filtro de polipropileno de 5 mm e osmose reversa. O afluente continha uma concentração inicial de 12,06 mg mL-1 de hexazinone e 37,70 mg mL-1 de diuron. As amostras foram coletadas em todos os filtros e submetidas à análise de turbidez e presença dos herbicidas por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência. O conjunto de filtros removeu 99,31, 99,84 e 99,99% da turbidez da água, hexazinone e diuron, respectivamente, ao final do sistema. Após o processo de filtração, a água tratada apresentou qualidade adequada para o abastecimento público e consumo humano. A técnica empregada neste estudo é de fácil operação e possui baixo custo de aquisição e manutenção.
ABSTRACT: The intensive use of pesticides, such as the herbicides diuron and hexazinone, leads to a concern about the preservation of the water quality of the water resources destined for human consumption. Currently, conventional water treatment techniques do not have high capacity to remove herbicides; therefore, the need to study other techniques arises. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the removal of diuron and hexazinone herbicides present in water through a commercial filtration system. The study was carried out in a filtration system composed of the following sequence of filters: sand filter and coconut shell activated granular carbon, polypropylene filter 20 mm, activated carbon filter with silver salts, polypropylene filter 5 mm and reverse osmosis. The affluent contained an initial concentration of 12.06 mg mL-1 of hexazinone and 37.70 mg mL-1 of diuron. The samples were collected in all filters and subjected to the analysis of turbidity and presence of herbicides by high performance liquid chromatography. The filter set removed 99.31; 99.84 and 99.99% of water turbidity, hexazinone and diuron respectively at the end of the system. After the filtration process, the treated water presented adequate quality for public supply and human consumption. The technique employed in this study is easy to operate and has a low acquisition and maintenance cost.

Os efeitos da inclusão de levedura seca de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) na dieta de vacas lactantes foram avaliados com base no fornecimento de quatro dietas constituídas de diferentes níveis de substituição do farelo de soja pela levedura de cana-de-açúcar (0,00; 0,33; 0,67 e 1,00kg/kg de MS). O delineamento utilizado foi o quadrado latino 4 × 4. Não houve efeito dos tratamentos sobre o consumo de MS, MO, EE, FDNi e NDT, porém ocorreu redução linear no consumo de PB e FDNcp e aumento do consumo de CNF. Diferenças estatísticas não foram verificadas para os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente da MS, MO, PB, CNF e NDT; no entanto os coeficientes do FDNcp e do EE decresceram linearmente. Não foi observado efeito sobre a produção e eficiência de síntese microbiana, utilização dos componentes nitrogenados e produção e composição do leite. Conclui-se que a levedura seca pode substituir 100% o farelo de soja na alimentação de vacas lactantes.
The effects of the inclusion of sugar cane dry yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in dairy cows feeding were evaluated based on the provision of four different diets with increasing proportions of sugar cane dry yeast (0.00; 0.33; 0.67 and 1.00kg/kg of DM). The design adopted for this research was the latin square, 4 × 4. It was observed that the levels of yeast inclusion did not affect the intake of DM, OM, EE, NDFi and TDN. However, the CP and NDFcp intake decreased linearly, whereas the NFC intake increased linearly with the increasing levels of yeast. No effect on the digestibility coefficient of DM, OM, CP, NDFcp and NCF was observed. Nevertheless, the EE digestibility coefficient linearly decreased with the yeast inclusion in the experimental diets. There was no treatment effect on the production and efficiency of microbial synthesis, usage of nitrogenous components, as well as milk production and composition. It was concluded that the dried yeast can fully replace the soybean meal in diets of dairy cows.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
