ABSTRACT Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a clinical-radiological disorder, which usually progresses with classical acute neurological symptoms (visual impairment, acute headache, altered level of consciousness, seizures, and even focal neurological deficit). A case presented with a review of the currently available literature is reported in this article.

RESUMEN El síndrome de encefalopatía posterior reversible es un trastorno clínico-radiológico que suele cursar con síntomas neurológicos agudos clásicos (alteración visual, cefalea aguda, alteración del nivel de conciencia, convulsiones e incluso déficit neurológico focal). En este artículo se presenta un caso junto con una revisión de la literatura disponible en la actualidad.

Abstract Background Ischemic stroke and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are cardiovascular diseases with high morbidity and mortality rates in Brazil and worldwide. Their outcomes are influenced by public policies aimed at mitigating risk factors and by investments in infrastructure of emergency support and quality of hospital care. Objective To analyze the trend in the proportion of in-hospital deaths from ischemic stroke and AMI in Brazil as a way of evaluating the effectiveness of urgency and emergency services. Methods Ecological time series study using data from the Hospital Information System. The outcome was the proportion of in-hospital deaths from ischemic stroke and AMI with stratification by sex and state. Prais-Winsten regression was used to analyze the trend between 1998-2018 with α≤0,05. Results The proportion of deaths from AMI and ischemic stroke declined in the time series (p<0.001), decreasing annually by 0.17% and 0.25%, respectively. In 20 years, it reduced 43.76% (ischemic stroke) and 32.39% (AMI) in both sexes. However, the decline was more evident in the South and Southeast regions. Conclusion The reduction in hospital deaths from AMI and ischemic stroke was heterogeneous among Brazilian regions, which may be related to inequality in emergency services and hospital support.

Abstract Welding procedures for repairing corroded tubular structures are commonly used; however, composite material repairs are becoming popular since they do not use heat sources that might cause accidents. This paper provides a detailed description of the CFRP patch repair application in steel tubular members with a circular perforation originated from a prolonged corrosion process. The results of experimental tests on mid-scale unrepaired damaged and repaired steel tubes are reported. The predictions of the maximum loads recovered from a proposed numerical model lie close to the experimental observed values, justifying its usage for analysis of repaired tubular structures with circular cutouts when subjected to axial compression. Compared to unrepaired perforated tubes, the experimental results demonstrate a substantial strength recovery for repaired tubes. The value of this research for the oil and gas industry is that it demonstrates the feasibility of this kind of repair, which means reduced risk to the production unit and a shorter repair period. used however accidents process midscale mid scale reported values compression period

RESUMEN La COVID-19 es una enfermedad infecciosa ocasionada por el virus SARS-CoV-2. La propagación de este virus se produce principalmente a través de gotitas liberadas por la nariz o la boca de una persona infectada. Aunque se han desarrollado vacunas que permiten reducir efectivamente los efectos que esta infección viral provoca, el método más eficaz para contener la propagación del virus son las numerosas pruebas para detectar y aislar los posibles portadores. Sin embargo, el tiempo de respuesta, combinado con el costo de las pruebas reales, hace que esta opción sea poco práctica. Aquí, comparamos algunas metodologías de machine learning para proponer una estrategia confiable para detectar personas positivas a COVID-19 analizando espectros de saliva obtenidos por espectroscopia infrarroja transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Tras analizar 1275 espectros, con 7 estrategias comúnmente empleadas en el área de machine learning, concluimos que un modelo de regresión lineal multivariante (MLMR) resulta ser la mejor opción para identificar posibles infectados. De acuerdo con nuestros resultados, el desplazamiento observado en la región de la amida I del espectro, resulta fundamental y confiable para establecer una frontera a partir del cambio de pendiente que este provoca. Al ser más ágil y económica que la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa con transcriptasa inversa (RT-PCR), podría aplicarse confiablemente como estrategia preliminar a RT-PCR.

ABSTRACT COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This virus's spread is mainly through droplets released from the nose or mouth of an infected person. Although vaccines have been developed that effectively reduce the effects that this viral infection causes, the most effective method to contain the virus’s spread is numerous tests to detect and isolate possible carriers. However, the response time, combined with the cost of actual tests, makes this option impractical. Herein, we compare some machine learning methodologies to propose a reliable strategy to detect people positive to COVID-19, analyzing saliva spectra obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. After analyzing 1275 spectra, with 7 strategies commonly used in machine learning, we concluded that a multivariate linear regression model (MLMR) turns out to be the best option to identify possible infected persons. According to our results, the displacement observed in the region of the amide I of the spectrum, is fundamental and reliable to establish a border from the change in slope that causes this displacement that allows us to characterize the carriers of the virus. Being more agile and cheaper than reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), it could be reliably applied as a preliminary strategy to RT-PCR.

Resumen Ante la crisis de nuestros sistemas democráticos, expresada en distintos colapsos económicos, ambientales y sociales, y más recientemente en las consecuencias socioeconómicas en torno al manejo de la crisis sanitaria generada por el COVID-19, América Latina es hoy un escenario político que ha redefinido la forma como se despliega la participación ciudadana. Tomando como caso de estudio lo sucedido en la ciudad de Cali a partir de las (re)configuraciones socioespaciales, provocadas por el Paro Nacional de Colombia del año 2021, se analizará el papel que juega el espacio en todo este proceso de cambio. El argumento central consiste en la identificación de tres espacialidades que operan en torno a esa nueva forma de participación ciudadana no institucionalizada: el espacio barrial de las organizaciones sociales, el espacio virtual de las redes sociales y el espacio urbano de las grandes movilizaciones. Revisaremos cómo se ha dado esa articulación (triple) del espacio y la emergencia de nuevos actores urbanos/políticos, además de su enorme capacidad transformadora.

Résumé Face à la crise de nos systèmes démocratiques, exprimée dans les différents effondrements économiques, environnementaux et sociaux; et plus récemment dans les conséquences socio-économiques entourant la gestion de la crise sanitaire générée par le COVID-19, l'Amérique latine est aujourd'hui un scénario politique qui a redéfini la manière dont la participation citoyenne se déploie. En prenant comme étude de cas ce qui s'est passé dans la ville de Cali à partir des (re)configurations socio-spatiales, provoquées par la grève nationale en Colombie en 2021, le rôle joué par la triple spatialité dans tout ce processus de changement sera analysé. L'argument central consiste en l'identification de trois spatialités qui s'opèrent autour de cette nouvelle forme de participation citoyenne non institutionnalisée : l'espace micro/quartier des organisations sociales, l'espace virtuel des réseaux sociaux et l'espace macro urbain des les grandes mobilisations urbaines. Nous verrons comment s'est opérée cette (triple) articulation de l'espace et l'émergence de nouveaux acteurs urbains/politiques, en plus de son énorme capacité de transformation.

Abstract Faced with the crisis of our democratic systems, expressed in the different economic, environmental, and social collapses; and more recently in the socioeconomic consequences surrounding the management of the health crisis generated by COVID-19, Latin America today is a political scenario that has redefined the way in which citizen participation is deployed. Taking as a case study what happened in the Cali City, based on the socio-spatial (re) configurations, caused by the national strike in Colombia 2021, the role played by triple spatiality in this entire process of change will be analyzed. The central argument consists of the identification of the space that operate around this new form of non-institutionalized citizen participation: the micro/neighborhood space of social organizations, the virtual space of social networks and the urban macro space of the great urban mobilizations. We will review how this (triple) articulation of space and the emergence of new urban/political actors has occurred, in addition to its enormous transforming capacity.

Resumo Perante a crise dos nossos sistemas democráticos, expressa nos diversos colapsos económicos, ambientais e sociais; e mais recentemente nas consequências socioeconómicas em torno da gestão da crise sanitária gerada pelo COVID-19, a América Latina hoje é um cenário político que redefiniu a forma como a participação cidadã é implantada. Tomando como estudo de caso o que aconteceu na cidade de Cali a partir das (re)configurações socioespaciais, causadas pela Greve Nacional na Colômbia em 2021, será analisado o papel desempenhado pela tripla espacialidade em todo esse processo de mudança. O argumento central consiste na identificação de espaço que opera em torno dessa nova forma de participação cidadã não institucionalizada: o espaço micro/ bairro das organizações sociais, o espaço virtual das redes sociais e o espaço urbano macro de as grandes mobilizações urbanas. Revisitaremos como se deu essa (tríplice) articulação do espaço e a emergência de novos atores urbanos/políticos, além de sua enorme capacidade transformadora.

Abstract A study was carried out to determine the exergy cost of biochar production based on oil palm kernel shell by slow pyrolysis in an experimental and a pilot furnace. Initially, mass, energy and exergy flows were evaluated by applying the Specific Exergy Costing (SPECO) scaling methodology, based on the resource-product concept. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the equipment were determined and the exergy cost was calculated. The exergy cost of 1 kg of biochar is 38990 $-kJ/kJ for the experimental furnace and 206 $-kJ/kJ for the pilot furnace. In summary, the exergy cost of biochar can vary depending on the equipment, operating conditions and the location where it is produced. It is recommended to make use of the heat and energy contained in the gases to optimize the process.

Resumen Se realizó un estudio para determinar el costo exergético de la producción de biocarbón a base de cuesco de palma de aceite mediante pirolisis lenta en un horno de experimental y uno piloto. Inicialmente se evaluaron flujos másicos, energéticos y exergéticos aplicando la metodología de escalamiento de Costo Exergético Específico (CEE), basada en el concepto recurso-producto. Se determinaron las eficiencias energéticas y exergéticas de los equipos y se calculó el costo exergético. El costo exergético de 1 kg de biocarbón es de 38990 $-kJ/kJ para el horno experimental y 206 $-kJ/kJ para el horno piloto. En conclusión, el costo exergético del biocarbón puede variar dependiendo de los equipos, las condiciones de operación y el lugar en donde se produzca. Se recomienda realizar el aprovechamiento del calor y de la energía que contienen los gases para optimizar los procesos.

Resumen La evidencia que relaciona la terapia oncológica con la incidencia por COVID-19 varía según el tipo de terapia administrada. La incidencia informada en pacientes que reciben tratamiento oncológico varía entre 1 y 4%. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la incidencia por COVID-19 en pacientes oncológicos en tratamiento activo y evaluar si existe asociación con el esquema recibido. Se utilizó una cohorte retrospectiva que incluyó de forma consecutiva a los pacientes adultos que realizaron tratamiento ambulatorio desde marzo/2020 hasta abril/2021 en un Hospital Público de referencia. El evento principal fue el diagnóstico confirmado de COVID-19. La asociación con los tratamientos oncológicos fue evaluada mediante regresión logís tica multivariada ajustando por edad, sexo, localización del tumor, cobertura de salud y localidad de residencia. Se incluyeron 463 pacientes, mediana de edad 58 años (RIC = 47-66), 73.3% (n = 337) mujeres. La incidencia de COVID-19 fue 5.6% (n = 26) con una tasa de mortalidad del 12% (n = 3). El riesgo de infección fue mayor en los que estaban realizando tratamiento únicamente con anticuerpos monoclonales, 14.3% vs. 4.9% (OR-ajustado = 3.3, p = 0.03) y aquellos en tratamiento con inhibidores de puntos de control inmunológicos, 23.1% vs. 5.1% (OR-ajustado = 5.8, p = 0.03). La quimioterapia citotóxica, sola o en combinación con anticuerpos mo noclonales, no presentó mayor riesgo de infección. La edad, sexo, sitio tumoral, cobertura de salud y localidad de residencia no se asoció con la incidencia de COVID-19. En base a nuestros resultados, el tratamiento con anticuerpos monoclonales o inhibidores de puntos de control inmunológicos se asoció con mayor incidencia de infección por COVID-19.

Abstract Evidence linking anticancer therapy with the incidence of COVID-19 varies according to the type of therapy administered. The reported COVID-19 incidence in patients receiving antineoplastic treatment varies between 1 and 4%. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of COVID-19 in cancer patients under active treatment and to assess whether there is an association with the received anticancer therapy. It was a retrospective cohort that consecutively included adult outpatients who underwent treatment in a referral center from March 2020 to April 2021. The primary endpoint was the confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. The association with anticancer treatments was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression adjusting for age, sex, tumor site, health coverage status, and place of residence. The sample included 463 patients, the median age was 58 years (IQR = 47-66), 73.3% (n = 337) were women. The incidence of COVID-19 was 5.6% (n = 26) with a mortality rate of 12% (n = 3). The risk of infection was higher in patients undergoing treatment only with monoclonal antibod ies, 14.3% vs. 4.9% (adjusted OR = 3.3, p = 0.03) and those in treatment with immunotherapy, 23.1% vs. 5.1% (adjusted OR = 5.8, p = 0.03). Cytotoxic chemotherapy, alone or in combination with monoclonal antibodies, did not present an increased risk of infection. Age, sex, tumor site, health coverage, and place of residence did not show association with the incidence of COVID-19. Based on our results, treatment with monoclonal antibodies or immunotherapy was associated with a higher rate of COVID-19 infection while chemotherapy did not modify the incidence of COVID-19.

Resumo Objetivou-se analisar a associação entre consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e adiposidade abdominal em adultos. Estudo transversal realizado com dados da linha de base do ELSA-Brasil (2008-2010). A amostra foi constituída por 15.065 servidores públicos de seis instituições de ensino e pesquisa (35 a 74 anos, ambos os sexos). Para identificar adiposidade central por meio das medidas de circunferência da cintura (CC) e relação cintura/quadril (RCQ), utilizou-se os pontos de corte preconizados pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Para as análises estatísticas foi utilizado o teste qui-quadrado e modelos de regressão de Poisson ajustados por variáveis potencialmente confundidoras. Cerca de 40% da amostra apresentava CC e RCQ elevadas. A probabilidade de apresentar CC elevada foi 5% e 3% maior no grupo mais exposto de consumo de cerveja em homens e mulheres quando comparado ao grupo de referência [RP = 1,05 (IC 95% 1,02-1,08) e RP = 1,03 (IC 95% 1,00-1,07)]. Também foi encontrada maior probabilidade de apresentar RCQ elevada entre os maiores consumidores de cerveja [RP = 1,03 (IC 95% 1,00-1,07) em homens e RP=1,10 (IC 95% 1,04-1,15) em mulheres]. Maior número de doses/semana de bebida alcoólica aumentou a probabilidade de ocorrência de CC e RCQ elevadas, sendo mais importante a contribuição da cerveja.

Abstract The objective was to analyze the association between alcohol consumption and abdominal adiposity in adults. Cross-sectional study conducted at baseline data from ELSA-Brasil (2008- 2010). The sample consisted of 15,065 civil servants from six education and research institutions (35 to 74 years old, both sexes). To identify central adiposity by measuring waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), the cutoff points recommended by the World Health Organization were used. Poisson regression models adjusted for potentially confounding variables were tested. About 40% of the sample had elevated WC and WHR. The probability of having elevated WC was 5% and 3% higher in the most exposed group of beer consumption in men and women when compared to the reference group [PR= 1.05 (95% CI 1.02-1.08) and P R= 1.03 (95% CI 1.00-1.07)]. A higher probability of having a high WHR was also found among the highest beer consumers [PR = 1.03 (95% CI 1.00-1.07) in men and PR = 1.10 (95% CI 1.04-1.15) in women]. A greater number of doses/week of alcoholic drink increased the probability of occurrence of high WC and WHR, with the beer contribution being more important.

SUMMARY: The complete petrosphenoidal foramen, or canal, is an eventual and atavistic bony formation at the boundary between the posterior and middle cranial fossa, by occurrence of ossification of the superior petrosphenoidal ligament. This ligament ossification, which has important clinical and surgical significance, can be complete or incomplete, in variable degrees, and is associated with the passageway of neurovascular structures, such as the abducens nerve and the inferior petrosal sinus. This study, conducted with 175 dry skulls that belong to the University of São Paulo’s collection (USP), São Paulo, Brazil, established criteria for a morphological classification of the incomplete petrosphenoid foramen in nine types. In addition, anatomical parameters were established for the morphometric determination of two diameters: the Oblique Diameter (ObDi) and the Maximum Transverse Diameter (MTD). Thus, of the 175 skulls, 146 (83.42 %) presented some of the incomplete forms of the petrosphenoid foramen, and 43 skulls (29.45 %), due to their conservation characteristics, were habilitated to the morphological study, in the classification and in the morphometry (the types I and II of our classification). The type II (incomplete foramen with bony projections of the petrosal tubercle, of the margin of the dorsum of the hypophyseal fossa or of the posterior clinoid process with a distance between them greater than 1mm) and type V (incomplete foramen with a bony projection only in one of the referential structures - posterior clinoid process) were the most common in this study (50 % of the 86 hemiskulls). Morphometry was attributed only to the types: I selar (incomplete foramen with bony projections from the petrosal tubercle and the margin of the dorsum of the hypophyseal fossa with a distance between them less than or equal to 1mm) and to the type II of this classification. The type I selar (9.3 % of the 43 skulls) resulted in an average of 3.25 mm of MTD and 4.63 mm, on average, of ObDi. The type II (25.58 % of the 43 skulls) showed, on average, 4.93 mm of MTD and 7.01 mm of ObDi.

RESUMEN: El foramen o canal petroesfenoidal completo es una formación ósea eventual y atávica en el límite entre las fosas craneal posterior y media, por osificación del ligamento petroesfenoidal superior. Esta osificación del ligamento, que tiene un importante significado clínico y quirúrgico, puede ser completa o incompleta, en grados variables, y está asociada al paso de estructuras neurovasculares, como el nervio abducente y el seno petroso inferior. Este estudio se realizó en 175 cráneos secos pertenecientes a la colección de la Universidad de São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brasil. Se establecieron criterios para una clasificación morfológica del foramen petrosfenoidal incompleto en nueve tipos. Además, se establecieron parámetros anatómicos para la determinación morfométrica de dos diámetros: el Diámetro Oblicuo (ObDi) y el Diámetro Transversal Máximo (MTD). Así, de los 175 cráneos, 146 (83,42 %) presentaron alguna de las formas incompletas del foramen petrosfenoidal, y 43 cráneos (29,45 %), por sus características de conservación, fueron habilitados para el estudio morfológico, en la clasificación y en la morfometría (los tipos I y II de nuestra clasificación). El Tipo II (foramen incompleto con proyecciones óseas del tubérculo petroso, del margen del dorso de la fosa hipofisaria o del proceso clinoides posterior con una distancia entre ellos mayor de 1 mm) y el Tipo V (foramen incompleto con proyección ósea solamente en una de las estructuras referenciales - proceso clinoides posterior) fueron los más comunes en este estudio (50 % de los 86 hemiscráneos). La morfometría se atribuyó únicamente al Tipo I selar (foramen incompleto con proyecciones óseas desde el tubérculo petroso y el margen del dorso de la fosa hipofisaria con una distancia entre ellos menor o igual a 1mm) y al Tipo II de esta clasificación. El Tipo I selar (9,3 % de los 43 cráneos) resultó en un promedio de 3,25 mm de MTD y 4,63 mm, en promedio, de ObDi. El Tipo II (25,58 % de los 43 cráneos) mostró, en promedio, 4,93 mm de MTD y 7,01 mm de ObDi.

Abstract Agro-industrial processing activities generate by-products that are discarded at high economic and environmental costs; however, many of them still contain high levels of bioactive compounds (BCs) such as dietary fiber (DF) and phenolic compounds (PCs), which, when combined, are known as antioxidant dietary fiber (ADF). These BCs have properties that are beneficial to our health, among them anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and cardioprotective. Moreover, DF can regulate glucose and cholesterol levels. The mechanism of ADF action depends on its chemical structure and the interactions between the DF and PCs in it. Recent studies have reported the incorporation of several of these by-products on a diet through food products consumed worldwide, such as bread. This review describes the chemical characteristics of the ADF complex and the effect of its molecular interactions on sensory, nutritional and health-promoting properties of functional bakery goods.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of the addition of condensed tannins (CT) in the efficiency of digestion, methanogenic potential and energy distribution between the fermentation products of two forages. An assay was carried out using the in vitro gas production technique in which extracts of Quebracho (Schinopsis balansae) and Lotus corniculatus were evaluated with fermentation patterns of derived products from Ryegrass (RG, Lolium perenne) and a tropical forage, Megathyrsus maximus (MM). Tannins were added to the substrate at a concentration of 30 mg g-1. MM presented higher and delayed gas production (GP), and in vitro dry matter, organic matter and fiber digestibilities (ivDMD, ivOMD and NDFD, respectively) were relatively high but lower than RG. In addition, MM presented higher CH4 production (CH4p) than RG in 24 and 48h. Even though CT of Quebracho induced a decrease in the NDFD, contrary to what was expected, CH4p was greater, although this effect could not be attributed to the presence of CT. The stoichiometric evaluation indicated that while the highest CH4p in Quebracho treatments were associated with acetogenic profiles, CH4p with Lotus did not show any relationship with the volatile fatty acids (VFA) profile, but it did show a relationship with the highest total VFA production and the highest GP.
