Aim This study aimed to assess the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and psychosocial comorbidities in undergraduate dental students in a southern Brazilian university, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, it aimed to verify the association between psychosocial factors and TMD. Methods Fonseca Anamnestic Index, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), a socioeconomic questionnaire, and questions about academic performance and social distancing were applied. Poisson regression analysis was used to assess the association of predictive variables with TMD. Results The prevalence of TMD was found to be 82.4%, and more than half of the students had some degree of stress, anxiety, and depression. Students who had symptoms of stress (RR 1.11; 95% CI 1.04-1.19), anxiety (RR 1.19; 95% CI 1.12-1.27) and reported academic performance worsening (RR 1.12; 95% CI 1.07-1.19) had higher TMD scores. Conclusion The findings suggest that TMD was highly prevalent among dental students at a federal university in southern Brazil during the pandemic, being associated with high levels of stress, anxiety, poor academic performance, and greater social distancing.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the pulp chamber temperature rise (PCTR) in light-cure bonding of brackets with and without primer, in intact and restored mandibular central incisors (M1), maxillary first premolars (Mx4), and mandibular third molars (M8). Material and Methods: Ninety human teeth were included: M1 (n=30), Mx4 (n=30), and M8 (n=30). Light-cure bonding of brackets was performed in intact (n=60) and restored (n=30) teeth, with primer (n=60) or without (n=30) primer. PCTR was defined as the difference between initial (T0) and peak temperatures (T1), recorded with a thermocouple during light-cure bonding. Differences on PCTR between bonding techniques (primer vs. no primer), teeth types (M1 vs. Mx4 vs. M8), and teeth condition (intact vs. restored) were estimated by ANCOVA, with α=5%. Results: PCTR was significantly higher with the use of primer (2.05 ± 0.08oC) than without primer (1.65 ± 0.14oC) (p=0.02), and in M1 (2.23 ± 0.22oC) compared to Mx4 (1.56 ± 0.14oC) (p<0.01). There was no difference in the PCTR in M8 (1.77 ± 0.28oC) compared to M1 or Mx4 (p>0.05), and no difference between intact (1.78 ± 0.14oC) and restored (1.92 ± 0.08oC) teeth (p=0.38). There was no influence of dentin enamel thickness in the PCTR (p=0.19). Conclusion: PCTR was higher in light-cure bonding of brackets with primer, especially in M1. Light-cure bonding seems less invasive without primer.

RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar o aumento na temperatura da câmara pulpar (ATCP) na colagem de braquetes com fotoativação usando ou não primer, em dentes hígidos versus dentes restaurados, em incisivos centrais inferiores (ICI), primeiros pré-molares superiores (1PMS) e terceiros molares inferiores (3MI). Métodos: Foram incluídos noventa dentes humanos: ICI (n=30), 1PMS (n=30) e 3MI (n=30). A colagem de braquetes com fotoativação foi realizada em dentes hígidos (n=60) ou dentes restaurados (n=30), com primer (n=60) ou sem (n=30) primer. O ATCP foi definido como a diferença entre as temperaturas inicial (T0) e máxima (T1) registradas com um termômetro durante a colagem com fotoativação. As diferenças no ATCP entre as técnicas de colagem (com primer vs. sem primer), diferentes dentes (ICIvs.1PMSvs.3MI) e condição dos dentes (hígidos vs. restaurados) foram estimadas por ANCOVA, com α=5%. Resultados: O ATCP foi significativamente maior com o uso de primer (2,05 ± 0,08oC) do que sem primer (1,65 ± 0,14oC) (p=0,02), e no ICI (2,23 ± 0,22oC) do que no 1PMS (1,56 ± 0,14oC) (p<0,01). Não houve diferença no ATCP do 3MI (1,77 ± 0,28oC) em comparação com ICI ou 1PMS (p>0,05), e não houve diferença entre dentes hígidos (1,78 ± 0,14oC) e restaurados (1,92 ± 0,08oC) (p=0,38). Não houve influência da espessura da dentina e do esmalte no ATCP (p=0,19). Conclusão: O ATCP foi maior na colagem de braquetes com fotoativação usando primer, principalmente no ICI. A colagem com fotoativação parece ser menos invasiva sem primer.

Abstract The aim of this study was to understand the influence of orthosurgical treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with Class II and III skeletal malocclusion by conducting a mixed method case series study. Nineteen patients submitted to orthosurgical treatment in a private practice in Brazil were included in the sample. Data were collected retrospectively and interviews were held from March 2020 to July 2021. Patients answered to the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) in the first part of the interview and subsequently answered the qualitative questions. The overall mean of OHIP-14 after treatment was 4.21 (SD 4.68). The qualitative data were analyzed according to thematic analysis and four themes emerged from the interviews: a) concept of quality of life, b) pre-treatment life, c) post-treatment life, and d) positive and negative aspects of treatment. Quality of Life was reported by the patients as the absence of feeling pain, having emotional and physical health, having a satisfactory esthetic appearance and self-esteem. Before treatment, most Class II patients used to complain about breathing and sleeping problems, while Class III patients complained more intensely about esthetics. Pain was a common problem reported by both Class II and Class III patients. In general, improvement was perceived in self-esteem, esthetics, function and pain. Complaints about negative aspects of the treatment were restricted to the postoperative period. The orthosurgical treatment was important for improving the OHRQoL of patients in terms of esthetic, functional and psychosocial aspects.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a concordância entre instrumentos de avaliação quantitativa do palato duro. Método Este estudo transversal foi realizado com uma amostra de 30 crianças de 6 a 11 anos de Santa Maria, sul do Brasil. Os instrumentos de medidas do palato avaliados foram: paquímetro digital, utilizado diretamente na cavidade oral e em modelos de gesso, arco tridimensional Korkhaus, usado diretamente na cavidade oral e em modelos de gesso, e Dolphin Imaging Software utilizado para medições em tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (CBCT). A concordância entre os diferentes instrumentos foi avaliada por meio do Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse (ICC). Resultados As médias de todas as dimensões transversais obtidas pela tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico foram menores do que as dos outros instrumentos - os valores de concordância na largura entre os caninos e na largura entre os primeiros molares foram baixos na comparação entre a tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico e os demais instrumentos. Na largura entre o primeiro e o segundo pré-molar, todas as comparações apresentaram valores de concordância aceitáveis. Valores de concordância aceitáveis também foram obtidos ao comparar a profundidade do palato na região do segundo pré-molar com o uso de um divisor de arco dentro da cavidade oral e no gesso. Conclusão A maioria dos instrumentos apresentou concordância satisfatória nas medidas relacionadas ao plano transverso do palato duro. Porém, quando avaliado o plano vertical, apenas o divisor de arco aplicado tanto no gesso quanto na cavidade oral apresentou concordância ideal.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the agreement among instruments of the quantitative evaluation of hard palate. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed with a sample of 30 children aged 6 to 11 from Santa Maria, Southern Brazil. The instruments for palate measurements evaluated were: digital caliper, used directly in the oral cavity and in plaster casts, Korkhaus tridimensional bow, used directly in the oral cavity and in plaster casts, and Dolphin Imaging Software used for measurements in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The agreement among different instruments was evaluated using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Results The means of all transversal dimensions obtained by cone-beam computed tomography were lower than those of the other instruments - the agreement values in the width between the canines and in the width between the first molars were lower when comparing the cone-beam computed tomography and the other instruments. In the width between the first and second premolars, all comparisons showed acceptable agreement values. Good concordance values were obtained when comparing the palate depth at the second premolar region when using a bow divider inside the oral cavity and in the cast. Conclusion Most instruments presented satisfactory agreement in the measurements related to the transverse plane of the hard palate. However, when the vertical plane was evaluated, only the bow divider applied to both cast and oral cavity presented ideal agreement.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a associação entre as dimensões do palato duro de acordo com os sexos, cor da pele e períodos da dentição mista e apresentar parâmetros de normalidade de referência para esta fase de desenvolvimento. Método Este estudo transversal avaliou uma amostra representativa de crianças com idade entre 7 e 13 anos em Santa Maria, sul do Brasil. Os desfechos do estudo foram as dimensões do palato: medidas de largura e profundidade. Características sociodemográficas e medidas orais relacionadas também foram avaliadas. Modelos de regressão linear ajustados foram utilizados para avaliar o efeito das variáveis preditoras sobre as dimensões do palato duro em milímetros. Os padrões de referência para a normalidade do palato duro foram apresentados em média, desvio padrão e intervalo de confiança de 95%. Resultados Foram avaliadas 569 crianças. As dimensões do palato duro foram maiores no sexo masculino e menores no primeiro período de transição da dentição mista. A cor da pele influenciou a largura do palato duro ao nível dos pré-molares, sendo as medidas de largura menores nos brancos. Mordida cruzada posterior, más oclusões de Classe II e III de Angle e hábitos de sucção não nutricionais causaram redução nas medidas da largura do palato duro. Conclusão As diferentes dimensões do palato duro são influenciadas por variáveis demográficas como o sexo, cor da pele e período de dentição mista. Crianças do sexo feminino, de cor de pele branca e no primeiro período de transição de dentição mista apresentaram menores dimensões do palato duro. O estabelecimento de padrões de referência de normalidade nas medidas do palato orienta a prática clínica.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the association among dimensions of the hard palate according to the sexes, skin color, and periods of the mixed dentition and present reference parameters of normality for this stage of development. Methods This cross-sectional study evaluated a representative sample of children between the ages of 7 and 13 years in Santa Maria, southern Brazil. The outcomes of the study were the dimensions of the palate: width measurements and depth. Sociodemographic characteristics and related oral measures were also assessed. Adjusted linear regression model were used to evaluate the effect of the predictor’s variables on the dimensions of the hard palate in millimeters. The reference standards for the hard palate normality were presented in mean, standard deviation, and 95% confidence interval. Results A total of 569 children were evaluated. The hard palate dimensions were larger in the male sex and smaller in the first transitional period of mixed dentition. Skin color had an influence on the hard palate width at the level of the premolars, and the width measurements were smaller in white individuals. Posterior cross bite, Angle Class II and III malocclusions and non-nutritional sucking habits caused reduction in the hard palate width measurements. Conclusion Different dimensions of the hard palate are influenced by demographic variables such as sex, skin color, and mixed dentition period. Children of the female sex, white-skinned and in the first transition period of mixed dentition had smaller dimensions of the hard palate. Establishing normality reference standards in measurements of the palates guides the clinical practice.

RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a estabilidade de cor das resinas compostas Filtek Z350 XT, Filtek Z250 XT, Z100 e resina ortodôntica Transbond XT, utilizadas para attachments ortodônticos, quando imersas em bebidas populares. Métodos: Trinta corpos de prova em forma de disco de cada resina composta (2 x 5mm) foram confeccionados e divididos aleatoriamente em seis grupos, de acordo com as soluções de imersão: café, vinho tinto, vinho branco, cerveja clara, cerveja escura e água deionizada (controle). Os discos foram totalmente imersos nas soluções por seis dias a 37°C, representando aproximadamente seis meses de consumo. As medidas de cor foram realizadas por um espectrofotômetro de reflexão, no baseline (antes da imersão) e após o manchamento. As coordenadas L*a*b* foram medidas e a variação de cor (ΔE00) foi calculada usando a fórmula CIEDE2000. Os dados foram analisados utilizando a análise de variância seguida pelo teste post-hoc de Tukey, com nível de significância de 0,05. Resultados: As resinas imersas em vinho branco e cerveja clara apresentaram ΔE00 imperceptível ou clinicamente aceitável, sem diferença em relação ao grupo controle (p= 0,44449 e p= 0,467, respectivamente). A imersão em café e vinho tinto foi considerada clinicamente inaceitável e significativamente diferente do grupo controle (p= 0,0028 e p= 0,0475, respectivamente). Conclusão: Com base nos resultados do presente estudo, o consumo de café e vinho tinto pode causar alteração na cor dos attachments ortodônticos acima do limite de aceitabilidade visual e prejudicar a estética durante o tratamento.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the color stability of Filtek Z350 XT, Filtek Z250 XT, Z100 resin composites and Transbond XT orthodontic resin, all used in orthodontic attachments, when immersed in popular beverages. Methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens of each resin composite (2 x 5mm) were manufactured and randomly divided into six groups according to immersion solutions: coffee, red wine, white wine, regular beer, dark beer and deionized water (control). The specimens were fully immersed in each of the solutions for six days at 37°C, representing approximately six months of consumption. The color measurements were evaluated by a reflection spectrophotometer, at baseline (before immersion) and after staining. L*a*b* coordinates were measured and the color change (ΔE00) was calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula. The data were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey tests at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The resin composites immersed in white wine and regular beer showed either imperceptible or clinically acceptable ΔE00, and no difference from the control group (p= 0.4449 and p= 0.467 respectively). Immersion in coffee and red wine were considered clinically unacceptable and were significantly different from the control group (p= 0.0028 and p= 0.0475 respectively). Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, the consumption of coffee and red wine may cause color change of the resin composite attachments above the visual acceptability threshold, and impair aesthetics during treatment.

RESUMO Introdução: Os mini-implantes ortodônticos (MI) são uma alternativa confiável para fornecer ancoragem esquelética temporária. Antes da inserção do mini-implante, a melhor abordagem seria avaliar cada local de inserção possível, medir a espessura do osso cortical e verificar se proporcionaria uma adequada estabilidade primária. Objetivo: O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a diferença na espessura do osso cortical em áreas de inserção dos mini-implantes em pacientes de diferentes idades, por meio da tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. Métodos: A amostra desse estudo retrospectivo foi composta por 123 tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico, que foram utilizadas para medir a espessura do osso cortical nos espaços inter-radiculares vestibular e palatino na região mesial dos primeiros molares permanentes. Essas medidas foram comparadas por meio dos testes t de Student, ANOVA/Tukey e regressão linear entre os sexos masculino e feminino, de 12 a 30 anos. Resultados: Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa na espessura cortical, quando comparados sexo, cor da pele e padrão facial sagital. Foram verificadas medidas significativamente maiores em pacientes com idade superior a 12 anos em todos os sítios avaliados. O coeficiente β da análise de regressão linear ajustada mostrou que, a cada incremento da idade, os valores médios da espessura cortical aumentaram 0,06 mm na mandíbula, 0,03 mm na região vestibular e 0,02 mm na região palatina da maxila. Conclusão: O aumento da espessura do osso cortical teve associação positiva com a idade, ou seja, quanto mais avançada a idade do paciente, menor a chance de falha, devido à estabilidade primária.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Orthodontic mini-implants (MI) are a reliable alternative to provide temporary orthodontic anchorage. Prior to miniscrew insertion, the best approach would be to evaluate each possible insertion site and measure the cortical bone thickness, and verify whether it would provide adequate primary stability. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the difference in cortical bone thickness in areas of mini-implants insertion in patients of different ages, by means of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: The sample of this retrospective study was composed of 123 CBCT scans, which were used to measure cortical bone thickness in the buccal and palatal inter-radicular space in the mesial region of the first permanent molars. These measures were compared by using the Student’s t-test, ANOVA/Tukey tests, and Linear regression between male and female subjects, from 12 to 30 years old. Results: No significant difference was found in cortical bone thickness between sex, race and sagittal facial patterns. Significantly higher measurement values were observed in patients older than 12 years of age at all sites evaluated. The coefficient β at the adjusted linear regression analysis showed that at each increment in age, mean cortical thickness values increased by 0.06mm in the mandible, 0.03mm in the buccal region and 0.02mm in the palatal region of the maxilla. Conclusions: The increase in cortical bone thickness was positively associated with age; that is, the more advanced the patient’s age was, the less chance there was of failure due to primary stability.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a cor de diferentes resinas ortodônticas expostas a três enxaguantes bucais, por um intervalo de tempo prolongado (simulação de 10 anos de envelhecimento). Métodos: 160 espécimes foram distribuídos em quatro grupos, de acordo com a resina de colagem ortodôntica (Concise, Transbond XT, Transbond Plus Color Change e Natural Ortho). Cada grupo foi exposto a diferentes tipos de enxaguantes bucais: à base de álcool (Listerine®), isento de álcool (Oral-B®), clorexidina (Periogard®) ou água destilada, como controle. Os espécimes foram submetidos a dois ciclos de manchamento e envelhecimento artificial. A cor foi avaliada por meio de um espectrofotômetro digital no início do experimento e após cada ciclo. O sistema utilizado para avaliar as alterações de cor foi o CIE L*a*b*. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se o teste ANOVA e o teste post-hoc de Tukey. Resultados: Após a simulação de 10 anos de envelhecimento, as resinas Transbond XT e Natural Ortho não apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas no ∆E, quando expostas a diferentes enxaguantes bucais. Os espécimes do grupo Concise expostos ao enxaguante bucal sem álcool apresentaram diferença significativa quando comparados aos espécimes do mesmo grupo expostos aos outros enxaguantes bucais. Os espécimes do grupo Transbond Plus Color Change expostos à clorexidina e ao enxaguante bucal à base de álcool apresentaram diferença significativa quando comparados aos espécimes dos grupos expostos à água e ao enxaguante bucal sem álcool. Conclusão: Todas as resinas ortodônticas avaliadas apresentaram alterações de cor clinicamente perceptíveis quando expostas a pelo menos um dos enxaguantes bucais, com exceção da resina ortodôntica Natural Ortho. A resina Concise exposta à solução isenta de álcool foi a que apresentou os maiores valores de alteração de cor.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the color of different orthodontic resin bonding agents exposed to three antiseptic mouthrinses for a prolonged time interval (10-year aging simulation). Methods: 160 specimens were distributed into four groups, according to the orthodontic resin bond agent (Concise, Transbond XT, Transbond Plus Color Change, and Natural Ortho). Each group was exposed to different antiseptic mouthrinses: alcohol-based (Listerine®), alcohol-free (Oral-B®), chlorhexidine (Periogard®) and distilled water as the control. Specimens were submitted to two cycles of staining and artificial aging. Color was evaluated by means of a digital spectrophotometer at the beginning of the experiment and after every cycle. The system used to assess color changes was the CIE L*a*b*. Data was analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test. Results: After simulation of 10 years of aging, Transbond XT and Natural Ortho composites presented no statistically significant differences in ∆E when exposed to different mouthrinses. The Concise composite specimens exposed to alcohol-free mouthrinse presented a significant difference when compared with specimens from the same group exposed to other antiseptic mouthrinses. Transbond Plus Color Change specimens exposed to chlorhexidine mouthrinse and to alcohol-containing mouthrinse presented a significant difference when compared with the specimens from the group exposed to water and alcohol-free antiseptic. Conclusion: All orthodontic resin bonding agents tested presented clinically perceptible color changes when exposed to at least one of the mouthrinses, except for the Natural Ortho composite. The Concise composite exposed to the alcohol-free solution was the resin that presented the highest color change values.

Abstract Background Malocclusions are highly prevalent in childhood and adolescence, being considered a public health problem worldwide, in addition to be considered an important predictor in the tongue position and speech disorders. Objective Evaluate the association of malocclusions with tongue position and speech distortion in mixed-dentition schoolchildren from the south of Brazil. Methodology This cross-sectional study was performed using a database of an epidemiological survey realized in the southern of Brazil, in 2015, for evaluating the dental and myofunctional condition of the mixed-dentition from 7-13 years’ schoolchildren. The outcome variables were tongue position and speech distortion, evaluated by a trained and calibrated examiner. Characteristics regarding sociodemographic and oral health measures (Angle’s classification of the malocclusion, overjet, overbite, posterior crossbite and respiratory mode) were also assessed. Poisson regression models with adjusted robust variance were used to evaluate the association among predictors variables in the outcomes. Results are presented as prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results A total of 547 children were evaluated. Schoolchildren who presented anterior open bite (PR 2.36 95%CI 1.59-3.49) and having oral/oral-nasal breathing (RP 2.51 95%CI 1.70-3.71) are more likely to have altered position of the tongue. Both deep bite and being male represent protection factors for the abnormal tongue position. Regarding speech distortion, deep overbite presents a protective relationship to speech distortion (PR 0.41; 95%CI 0.24-0.71), whereas schoolchildren with posterior crossbite were more likely to present this problem (PR 1.77; 95%CI 1.09-2.88). Conclusion Anterior open bite and posterior crossbite were the malocclusions related to speech distortion and/or altered tongue position. Oral/oral-nasal breathing was also related to myofunctional changes. Deep bite malocclusion was a protective factor for both speech problems and altered tongue position when compared to a normal overbite.

Resumo Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a técnica cirúrgica sem retalho como alternativa à tradicional corticotomia alveolar utilizada para acelerar o movimento dentário experimental. Métodos: para induzir a movimentação dentária experimental em ratos Wistar, foram aplicados 40 cN de força ortodôntica aos primeiros molares superiores esquerdos. Quarenta ratos foram distribuídos nos grupos (n = 5) controles (GC1, GC3, GC7 e GC14) e experimentais (GE1, GE3, GE7, GE14), nos quais foram realizadas perfurações alveolares com uma ponta lança. As datas de eutanásia foram estabelecidas em 1, 3, 7 e 14 dias, respectivamente, após o início do movimento dentário. A quantidade de deslocamento dentário foi medida com um paquímetro e os osteoclastos presentes no ligamento periodontal da raiz mesial do dente movimentado foram contados por meio de avaliação histológica (coloração por fosfatase ácida resistente ao tartarato, TRAP). Resultados: embora não tenha havido diferença na quantidade de deslocamento dentário dentro dos subgrupos dos períodos experimentais correspondentes (p> 0,05), quando GC14 e GE14 foram comparados, um número maior de osteoclastos foi contado no grupo experimental (p< 0,00). Conclusão: os autores concluíram que as perfurações alveolares corticais sem retalho levaram a uma atividade osteoclástica mais intensa no décimo quarto dia; entretanto, nenhuma evidência de movimento dentário acelerado pôde ser notada.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate a flapless surgical technique as an alternative to traditional alveolar corticotomy used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Methods: To induce OTM in Wistar rats, 40 cN of orthodontic force were applied to the maxillary left first molars. Forty rats were distributed into control groups (CG1, CG3, CG7 and CG14) and experimental groups (n= 5), in which alveolar perforations were made using a spear-shaped guide bur (EG1, EG3, EG7, EG14). Euthanasia dates were set at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively, after tooth movement began. The amount of OTM was measured with a caliper, and osteoclasts present in the periodontal ligament of the mesial root of the moved tooth were counted by means of histological evaluation (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining, TRAP). Results: Although there was no difference in the amount of OTM within subgroups of corresponding experimental periods (p> 0.05), when EG14 and CG14 were compared, a larger number of osteoclasts was counted in the experimental group (p< 0.00). Conclusion: The authors concluded that flapless cortical alveolar perforations led to more intense osteoclastic activity on the fourteenth day; nevertheless, no evidence of accelerated OTM could be noted.

RESUMO Objetivo Este estudo foi conduzido para identificar as variáveis associadas ao diagnóstico de respiração oral em crianças, baseado nos domínios multidisciplinares. Método Cento e dezenove crianças, de seis a 12 anos, realizaram uma avaliação abrangente composta por uma anamnese e exames fonoaudiológico (estruturas orofaciais e funções estomatognáticas), otorrinolaringológico (avaliação clínica e endoscópica), odontológico (conservação oral e oclusão) e fisioterapêutico (postura corporal e permeabilidade nasal). A permeabilidade nasal foi aferida utilizando-se o Pico de Fluxo Inspiratório Nasal (PFIN) e a escala NOSE (Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation). Foi realizada uma regressão logística múltipla, considerando o modo respiratório como variável dependente e as covariáveis de cada avaliação multidisciplinar como variáveis associadas. Resultados Foi encontrada uma associação do diagnóstico de respiração oral com variáveis de cada domínio profissional: relato de obstrução nasal (Odds ratio - OR=5,55), tempo de uso de chupeta (OR=1,25), tipo facial convexo (OR=3,78), ângulo nasolabial obtuso (OR=4,30), postura de lábios entreabertos e abertos (OR=4,13), postura de língua no assoalho oral (OR=5,88), largura do palato duro reduzida (OR=2,99), contrações inesperadas durante a mastigação (OR=2,97), tonsilas faríngeas obstrutivas (OR=8,37), má oclusão classe II de Angle (OR=10,85) e estado gengival regular (OR=2,89). Conclusão Concluiu-se que o diagnóstico multidisciplinar é importante, uma vez que as avaliações dos domínios fonoaudiológico, otorrinolaringológico e odontológico obtiveram variáveis associadas ao diagnóstico de respiração oral. As variáveis relacionadas à postura corporal e permeabilidade nasal não foram associadas ao diagnóstico de respiração oral.

ABSTRACT Purpose : This study was conducted to identify variables associated with mouth breathing diagnosis in children, based on multidisciplinary domains. Methods 119 children, six to 12 years old, underwent anamnesis, speech therapy (orofacial structures and stomatognathic functions), otorhinolaryngologic (OTRL) with clinical and endoscopic examinations, dental (occlusion) and physiotherapy (body posture and nasal patency) assessments. Nasal patency was evaluated using Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) and the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale. A multiple logistic regression was performed considering breathing mode as the dependent variable and the co-variables from each multidisciplinary assessment as associated variables. Results Association with MB diagnosis was found in each professional domain with: nasal obstruction report (Odds ratio - OR=5.55), time of pacifier use (OR=1.25), convex facial type (OR=3.78), obtuse nasal angle (OR=4.30), half-open or open lip posture (OR=4.13), tongue position on the mouth floor (OR=5.88), reduced hard palate width (OR=2.99), unexpected contraction during mastication (OR=2.97), obstructive pharyngeal tonsils (OR=8.37), Angle Class II malocclusion (OR=10.85) and regular gingival maintenance (OR=2.89). Conclusion We concluded that a multidisciplinary diagnosis is important, given that each evaluation domain, including OTRL, dental and speech therapy, presented variables associated with MB diagnosis. Body posture and nasal patency variables were not associated with MB.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a influência do gênero e da idade nas dimensões do palato duro, bem como verificar os parâmetros de referência disponíveis na literatura. Estratégia de pesquisa Dois examinadores realizaram a pesquisa de forma independente nas bases de dados Cochrane Library, PubMed-Medline e Web of Knowledge utilizando os descritores de acordo com as regras de sintaxe de cada banco de dados. Critérios de seleção Estudos em humanos observacionais ou experimentais, que avaliaram as dimensões do palato duro ou do arco dentário maxilar com pelo menos uma mensuração no plano transversal, vertical ou sagital em oclusões normais ou más oclusões classe I e que realizaram comparações das dimensões entre os gêneros e/ou idades. Análise de dados Análise descritiva, seguindo subdivisões: delineamento, amostra, instrumentos de avaliação, medidas em milímetros e análise estatística. A qualidade dos estudos incluídos foi verificada através da escala “Newcastle - Ottawa Quality”. Resultados Foram selecionados 18 estudos. Destes, 11 apresentaram resultados das dimensões do palato duro ou do arco dentário maxilar conforme o gênero, seis em idade e gênero e um somente em idade. Conclusão As medidas foram maiores no gênero masculino e houve um aumento progressivo nas dimensões do nascimento até o período de dentição permanente.

ABSTRACT Purpose Analyze the influence of gender and age on hard palate dimensions and verify the reference parameters available in the literature. Research strategies Two reviewers independently performed a search at the Cochrane Library, PubMed-Medline and Web of Knowledge databases using descriptors according to the syntax rules of each database. Selection criteria Observational or experimental human studies evaluating the dimensions of the hard palate or maxillary dental arch, with at least one transverse, vertical or sagittal plane measurement, in normal occlusions or class I malocclusions, and comparisons of the dimensions between genders and/or ages. Data analysis Descriptive analysis with the following subdivisions: design, sample, evaluation instruments, measurements in millimeters, and statistical analysis. Quality of the included studies was verified by the Newcastle - Ottawa Quality scale. Results Eighteen studies were selected and 11 presented results for hard palate or maxillary dental arch dimensions according to gender, six in age and gender and one in age only. Conclusion The dimensions were larger in males and progressive increase in the measurements was observed from birth to the permanent dentition period.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In dental practice, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) are mainly used for dental surgery and biostimulation therapy. Within the Orthodontic specialty, while LLLT has been widely used to treat pain associated with orthodontic movement, accelerate bone regeneration after rapid maxillary expansion, and enhance orthodontic tooth movement, HILT, in turn, has been seen as an alternative for addressing soft tissue complications associated to orthodontic treatment. Objective: The aim of this study is to discuss HILT applications in orthodontic treatment. Methods: This study describes the use of HILT in surgical treatments such as gingivectomy, ulotomy, ulectomy, fiberotomy, labial and lingual frenectomies, as well as hard tissue and other dental restorative materials applications. Conclusion: Despite the many applications for lasers in Orthodontics, they are still underused by Brazilian practitioners. However, it is quite likely that this demand will increase over the next years - following the trend in the USA, where laser therapies are more widely used.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar as medidas antropométricas orofaciais segundo o tipo facial de crianças do sexo masculino e feminino. Métodos: participaram do estudo 126 crianças, 64 do sexo feminino e 62 do sexo masculino, com idade entre sete anos e 11 anos. As medidas antropométricas orofaciais foram comparadas entre os tipos faciais obtidos por meio da análise cefalométrica. Inicialmente foi realizada análise descritiva dos tipos faciais de acordo com os sexos. Por meio da Análise de Variância, foi realizada a comparação das medidas antropométricas no sexo masculino e feminino isoladamente e, posteriormente, foi realizada a análise independe do sexo. Os dados foram analisados considerando nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: encontrou-se um número maior de braquifaciais, seguidos de mesofaciais e dolicofaciais na totalidade da amostra. Na comparação das medidas antropométricas entre os três tipos faciais, evidenciou-se no sexo masculino diferença significante na medida de terço facial inferior e no sexo feminino, nas medidas da altura facial, terço inferior e lábio inferior. Quando comparadas as medidas antropométricas de forma independente do sexo, evidenciou-se diferença significante no terço inferior, lados direito e esquerdo da face, lábios superior e inferior. Conclusão: como esperado, nas análises de todos os resultados, considerando ou não os sexos, as medidas antropométricas orofaciais foram menores nos braquifaciais, com maior evidência encontrada nas medidas relacionadas ao plano vertical inferior.

ABSTRACT Purpose: assess anthropometric orofacial measurements of boys and girls according to facial type. Methods: participants were 126 children, 64 girls and 62 boys, aged between seven and 11 years. Anthropometric orofacial measurements were compared between the facial types obtained by cephalometric analysis. Initially, a descriptive analysis of facial types was conducted based on sex. Anthropometric measurements in boys and girls were compared separately by analysis of variance, followed by sex-independent analysis. Data were analyzed considering a significance level of 5%. Results: a larger number of brachyfacial individuals were found in the sample, followed by mesofacial and dolichofacial subjects. Comparison of facial measurements for the three types showed a significant difference in the lower third of the face among boys, and in face height, lower third and lower lip among girls. When anthropometric measurements were compared independently of sex, a significant difference was observed in the lower third, right and left sides of the face, as well as the upper and lower lips. Conclusion: as expected, analyses of all the results, considering sex or not, found lower anthropometric orofacial measurements in brachyfacial individuals, which was most evident in measurements related to the lower vertical plane.
