Abstract Here we present a taxonomic treatment of the subfamily Celastroideae (Celastraceae) in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, as a part of the ongoing project Flora do Espírito Santo. The work is based on analyses of herbaria specimens and fieldwork since 2012. Two genera and thirteen species are reported for Espírito Santo, covering all the vegetation formations found in the state. Celastrus is represented by one species, C. liebmannii, the unique climbing species of the subfamily in Brazil. Monteverdia are shrubs and trees characterized by fruits 2-valved, pericarp coriaceous and white aril. The genus is represented by twelve species, corresponding nearly to one third of the Brazilian species. Celastrus liebmannii is formally reported by the first time to Espírito Santo. Morphological descriptions, comments, color photographs plates, and identification keys for genera and Monteverdia species are provided.

Resumo Apresentamos aqui o tratamento taxonômico da subfamília Celastroideae (Celastraceae) no estado do Espírito Santo, como parte da contribuição para o projeto Flora do Espírto Santo. Este trabalho é baseado na análise de espécimes de herbário e trabalhos de campo realizado pelos autores a partir de 2012. Dois gêneros e treze espécies são aqui reportados para o Espírito Santo, presente em todas as formações vegetacionais encontradas no estado. Celastrus está representado por uma espécie, C. liebmannii, a única espécie trepadeira da subfamília no Brasil. Monteverdia incluem arbustos e árvores caracterizados por frutos 2-valvados, pericarpo coriáceo e arilo branco. O gênero está representado por doze espécies, correspondendo a quase um terço das espécies brasileiras. Celastrus liebmannii é formalmente registrada pela primeira vez para o Espírito Santo. Descrições morfológicas, comentários, pranchas com imagens coloridas, e chaves de identificação para os gêneros e as espécies de Monteverdia são fornecidas.

Resumo As florestas nebulares ocorrem em locais de altitude elevada na Floresta Atlântica do leste do Brasil, embora dispersas e fragmentadas no topo das montanhas. Neste habitat, a vegetação ocorre em condições de baixa temperatura e geralmente é suprida por fontes de água adicionais que surgem devido à precipitação horizontal oriundas de nevoeiros, que são frequentes nesses locais. Ademais, os maiores movimentos de ar e a luminosidade, constituem fatores condicionantes a floras singulares que ocorrem em altitudes elevadas, principalmente as plantas epifíticas, que são sensíveis ao macro e microclima. Na região serrana do centro do estado do Espírito Santo, no Sudeste do Brasil, alguns locais mais elevados, como a Pedra Azul (PA), possuem essas características ambientais. Aqui, objetivamos apresentar a primeiro inventário de epífitas vasculares no Parque Estadual de Pedra Azul e arredores com base em trabalhos de campo e espécimes de herbário. Nós registramos 152 espécies, 65 gêneros e 17 famílias, sendo as principais famílias Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae e Polypodiaceae, com os principais gêneros representados por Vriesea, Acianthera e Peperomia. As holoepífitas constituem a categoria principal entre as epífitas, embora um número incomumente alto de epífitas facultativas tenha sido registrado. Asplenium theciferum e Octomeria cucullata foram registradas pela primeira vez no Espírito Santo, e confirmamos a ocorrência de Rhipsalis cereuscula no estado. No geral, a riqueza registrada em PA está entre as mais altas das da Floresta Atlântica. Seis espécies estão ameaçadas em nível nacional e 32 em nível estadual. Esses resultados corroboram a importância da área protegida para a conservação da flora; entretanto, várias espécies - inclusive ameaçadas - foram registradas apenas no entorno, demonstrando que a zona de amortecimento do Parque Estadual da Pedra Azul deve ser incluída nos planos de manejo.

Abstract Cloud forests usually occur at high-altitude sites of the Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil, albeit scattered and fragmented along the mountain tops. In this habitat, the vegetation occurs at low-temperature conditions and is usually provided by additional water sources that arise due to the horizontal precipitation of the frequent fogs. Together with the more considerable air movement and higher luminosity, these factors are conditioning for singular floras at high elevations, mainly the vascular epiphytes, which are macro and microclimate dependent. In the mountains range at the center of the Espírito Santo state, Southeastern Brazil, some mountain tops such as Pedra Azul (PA) hold these environmental features. Here, we aimed to present the first checklist of vascular epiphytes in the Pedra Azul State Park and surroundings based on fieldwork and herbarium specimens. The checklist comprises 152 species, 65 genera, and 17 families, the main families being Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Polypodiaceae, with the main genera represented by Vriesea, Acianthera, and Peperomia. The holoepiphytes were the main category among the epiphytes, although an unusually high number of facultative epiphytes were recorded. Asplenium theciferum and Octomeria cucullata are recorded in Espírito Santo for the first time, and we confirmed the occurrence of Rhipsalis cereuscula in the state. Overall, the richness recorded in PA is amongst the highest of the Atlantic Forest cloud forests. Six species are threatened at the national level and 32 at the state level. These results support the importance of the protected area for conserving the flora; however, several species - including threatened - were only recorded in the surroundings, demonstrating that the buffer zone of the Pedra Azul State Park must be included in the management plans.

Resumo Compreender o papel dos condutores nos padrões de diversidade é essencial na ecologia, uma vez que a diversidade desempenha um papel importante na estabilidade e manutenção das comunidades de plantas. Os murundus são montes de terra pequenos e dispersos com uma flora diferenciada em seu entorno. Em nosso local de estudo (Campo Maior, Piauí, Nordeste do Brasil), os classificamos nas categorias: presença de carnaúba (PC), presença de tucum (PT) e ausência de palmeiras (AP). Aqui, nossos objetivos foram (1) explorar a diversidade alfa usando o estimador de riqueza e a classificação de distribuição de abundância, uma vez que esperávamos que as palmeiras pudessem influenciar a riqueza de espécies de plantas em murundus; (2) explorar as relações de espécies-área no murundus, partindo do pressuposto de que o maior contém mais espécies; (3) encontrar as mudanças na composição de espécies (diversidade beta) entre as três categorias de murundus, supondo que a presença de palmeiras influencia na composição de espécies; e (4) investigar se a distância entre os murundus é um fator decisivo na composição das espécies, onde os murundus mais próximos são os mais semelhantes na composição das espécies. Nossos resultados demonstraram que as palmeiras não influenciam a riqueza dos murundus, os maiores murundus são os mais ricos, e o turnover determina predominantemente a diversidade beta nas diferentes categorias de murundus. Além disso, a distância entre os murundus não determinou sua similaridade florística. De maneira geral, demonstramos que as espécies de palmeiras não são o principal impulsionador da assembleia de plantas nos murundus, porém seu tamanho constitui um fator preponderante na riqueza, com grande substituição de espécies, o que explica a elevada diversidade vegetal.

Abstract Understand the role of the drivers in vegetation pattern is essential in ecology since diversity plays a major role in the stability and maintenance of plant communities. The murundus are small and scattered earthmounds with a differentiated flora of its surrounding. In our study site (Campo Maior, Piauí, Northeastern Brazil), we classified them in three categories: presence of carnaúba (PC), presence of tucum (PT), and with the absence of palm trees (AP). Here, our goals were (1) to explore alpha diversity using the richness estimator and abundance distribution rank, expecting that palm trees could influence the richness of plant species on murundus; (2) analyzing the species richness-area relationship in the murundus, following the assumptions that the largest one holds more species; (3) find the changes in the species composition (beta diversity) between the three categories of murundus, assuming which the presence of palm trees influence the species composition; and (4) investigate if the distance between murundus is a decisive factor in the species composition, where the closest murundus are the most similar in species composition. Ours results showed that palms trees do not influence the richness of the murundus, the largest murundus are the richest ones, and the turnover predominantly determines beta diversity in the different murundus categories. Furthermore, the distance between the murundus did not determine its floristic similarity. Overall, we demonstrated which the species of palm trees are not the main drive of the plant assemblage in the murundus, however its size comprises a major factor in the richness, with great species substitution, which explains the high plant diversity.

Resumo: O Parque Estadual de Porto Ferreira (PEPF) está localizado no estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil, em uma intrigante área de contato entre a Mata Atlântica e o Cerrado - ambos hotspots de biodiversidade -, representada principalmente pelo cerradão (CER), a floresta estacional semidecidual (FES) e pela variação dessa última, com influência aluvial (FESA). As áreas ecotonais desempenham um papel importante no conhecimento ecológico e fitogeográfico da flora e da vegetação. Mesmo com muitos estudos realizados no PEPF, as informações encontram-se dispersas. Dessa forma, produzimos um checklist atualizado da flora vascular, resultante da compilação de vouchers, estudos realizados no PEPF e de esforços de coleta realizados pelos autores entre os anos de 2014 e 2017. Além disso, para entender suas relações fitogeográficas, realizamos uma análise de similaridade florística entre o PEPF e outros levantamentos realizadas nas mesmas fitofisionomias da área estudada. Registramos 684 espécies pertencentes a 387 gêneros e 107 famílias. A FES foi a fitofisionomia mais rica (478 espécies), seguida pelo CER (418) e a FESA (231). As famílias mais ricas foram Fabaceae (64 espécies), Myrtaceae (41), Orchidaceae (39), Rubiaceae (37), Asteraceae (35), Bignoniaceae (26) e Malvaceae (20). Oito espécies ameaçadas em âmbito regional e nacional foram encontradas. Desde a última lista florística produzida para o PEPF, 412 espécies foram adicionadas. As formas de vida com maiores números de espécies foram: árvores (286 espécies), ervas (176) e arbustos mais subarbustos (123). A análise de similaridade corroborou o padrão de que áreas mais próximas geograficamente são mais similares entre si, e esse padrão foi encontrado, também, para áreas ecotonais envolvendo diferentes fitofisionomias. Os resultados encontrados colocam o PEPF entre as unidades de conservação com maior número de espécies vegetais sob o domínio de clima sazonal, possuindo, portanto, grande importância para a conservação de espécies de plantas no Sudeste do Brasil.

Abstract: The Porto Ferreira State Park (PFSP) is located in the State of São Paulo southeastern Brazil, in an intriguing transitional area between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado - both hotspots of biodiversity - represented mainly by the cerradão (CER), and the seasonal semideciduous forest (SSF), with its alluvial variation vegetation type (riparian forest - RP). Ecotonal areas play an important role in providing ecological and phytogeographic knowledge regarding the flora and vegetation of this region. Despite various studies on the PFSP, knowledge of this region remains fragmented. In this study, we aim to conduct an updated checklist of the PFSP vascular flora, including a compilation of all the studies conducted in this protected area, plus field work carried out by the authors from 2014 to 2017. In addition, given its ecotonal characteristics, we completed a floristic similarity analysis between the PFSP and other floristic surveys that examined the same vegetation types present in this study, to gain a better understanding of their phytogeographic relationships. Overall, 684 species, belonging to 387 genera and 107 families, were recorded. The SSF presented the richest vegetation type (478 species), followed by the CER (418) and the RP (231). The most diverse families were Fabaceae (64 species), Myrtaceae (41), Orchidaceae (39), Rubiaceae (37), Asteraceae (35), Bignoniaceae (26) and Malvaceae (20). Moreover, eight threatened species, at regional and national levels, were found. To date, 412 species have been added to the floristic list produced for the PFSP. The life forms with the highest number of species were trees (286 species), herbs (176) plus shrubs and subshrubs (123). Our research findings indicate floristic patterns with higher levels of similarity among species in geographical proximity, including those in ecotonal areas encompassing different vegetation types. These results rank the PFSP among some of the most species-rich conservation units with seasonal climates, and therefore is of great importance for plant conservation in the southeast of Brazil.

RESUMO As epífitas vasculares são responsáveis por uma parcela considerável da biodiversidade tropical; no entanto, suas relações com os forófitos entre diferentes tipos de vegetação em que ocorrem ainda são pouco compreendidas. Neste trabalho, objetivamos avaliar a presença, a abundância, a distribuição vertical e a categoria ecológica (holoepífita e hemiepífita) das epífitas vasculares em dois tipos de vegetação [Floresta Estacional Semidecídua (- FES) e Floresta Paludosa (- FP)], com o intuito de investigar se há correlação com o tamanho dos forófitos (diâmetro e altura) e possíveis especificidades na colonização destes pelas epífitas. Na FP foi registrado um maior número de forófitos; no entanto, a abundância de epífitas não apresentou diferenças entre os dois tipos de vegetação. A distribuição vertical apresentou diferença entre os tipos de vegetação, com mais epífitas no fuste na FP, enquanto na FES a copa apresentou mais epífitas. Houve relação positiva da abundância de epífitas com o porte dos forófitos em ambas as fitofisionomias. Por outro lado, a densidade das espécies de árvores é provavelmente mais importante na FP para a colonização das epífitas. Os resultados mostraram a importância da heterogeneidade florestal na conservação e manutenção da assembleia de epífitos vasculares, demonstrada pelas diferenças na abundância e distribuição das epífitas, mesmo em florestas contíguas.

ABSTRACT Vascular epiphytes are responsible for a considerable portion of tropical biodiversity; however, the variation of epiphytes-phorophytes relationships in different vegetation types are still poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to assess the presence, abundance, vertical distribution, and life cycle (holoepiphyte and hemiepiphyte) of vascular epiphytes in two vegetation types [Seasonal Semideciduous Forest (- SSF), and Swamp Forest (- SF)] in order to determine any correlation with phorophyte size (diameter and height) and the specificity of phorophyte species to the epiphytic colonization. There was a higher number of phorophytes in SF; however, epiphytes density did not differ between the vegetation types. The recorded vertical distribution also showed different patterns: in the SSF, most epiphytes were found in the canopy, while in the SF they occurred mainly on the trunks of the trees. The abundance of epiphytes was positively correlated with the phorophyte size in the two vegetation types. In the SSF, colonization of phorophytes by epiphytes appeared to be less species-specific than in the SF, where trees density is likely to be a more significant factor to epiphytic colonization. The results showed the importance of the forest heterogeneity in the conservation and maintenance of vascular epiphytes assemblage, demonstrated by differences in the abundance and distribution of the epiphytes, even in contiguous forests.

Resumo Mormolyca cleistogama, apresenta sua ocorrência desconhecida no estado de São Paulo, apesar de ser amplamente distribuída na América do Sul. Nesse estudo, através de coleta em campo, confirmou-se a ocorrência desta espécie no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. São apresentadas descrição morfológica, fotografias coloridas e comparação com o táxon morfologicamente mais próximo, M. rufescens.

Abstract Mormolyca cleistogama has its occurrence unknown in São Paulo state, although widely distributed in South America. In this study, based in field collection, we confirmed the occurrence of M. cleistogama in São Paulo state, Brazil. Morphological descriptions, color images and comparison with the closely related taxon, M. rufescens, are presented.

Resumo O levantamento florístico das trepadeiras foi realizado em um ecótono de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (FES) e Cerradão (CER), no Parque Estadual de Porto Ferreira, Sudeste do Brasil. Realizamos coletas mensais dos espécimes reprodutivos ao longo de dois períodos, março 2010 a setembro 2011, abril e julho 2015. Os levantamentos foram realizados por meio do método de caminhada e os indivíduos amostrados foram classificados quanto ao hábito, mecanismo de ascensão e síndrome de dispersão. No geral, foram registradas 109 espécies, pertencentes a 67 gêneros e 29 famílias. Dentre essas, 49 espécies ocorrem nos dois tipos de vegetação, sendo que 29 e 31 espécies são exclusivas de FES e CER, respectivamente. Bignoniaceae e Malpighiaceae foram as famílias mais ricas com 17 espécies, seguidas por Sapindaceae (12 espécies), Asteraceae e Apocynaceae (8 espécies cada) e Fabaceae (6). A maioria das espécies de trepadeiras são lianas, volúveis e anemocóricas, correspondendo a 70%, 47% e 66% de toda a amostra, respectivamente. Neste trabalho, acrescentamos uma nova família e 14 espécies para a lista de trepadeiras do Cerrado paulista e 10 espécies para a lista brasileira de trepadeiras em Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Portanto, contribuímos para o conhecimento da diversidade de trepadeiras em tipos vegetacionais pouco estudados para este grupo de planta, destacando o Cerradão, no qual encontramos novos registros para um grande número de espécies.

Abstract A floristic survey of climbing plants was carried out in an ecotone area of seasonal semideciduous forest (SSF) and forested savanna (CER), in Porto Ferreira State Park (PFSP), Southeastern Brazil. We sampled the reproductive specimens every month during two periods, March 2010 to September 2011 and April and July 2015. The surveys were performed by the walking method, and the sampled individuals were classified by habit, climbing mechanism and dispersal mode. Overall, 109 species, belonging to 67 genera and 29 families, were recorded; 49 species occurred in both, 29 and 31 were exclusive to SSF and CER, respectively. Bignoniaceae and Malpighiaceae were the richest families, with 17 species, followed by Sapindaceae (12 species), Asteraceae and Apocynaceae (8 species each) and Fabaceae (6). The majority of climbers were lianas, twining and anemochoric species, corresponding to 70%, 47% and 66% of all samples, respectively. In this work, we added one new family and 14 species to the Cerrado’s list of climbing plants from São Paulo state, and 10 species to the Brazilian seasonal semideciduous forest’s list. Therefore, we contributed to the understanding of diversity of climbing plants in vegetation types poorly studied for this plant group, mainly in the Cerradão, wherein we found new records for several species.

Resumo Em fragmentos de Floresta Paludosa (FP) e Floresta Estacional Semidecídua (FES), em Botucatu, São Paulo (22º 55'23"S e 48º 27'28"W), através de expedições mensais no período de um ano, foi avaliada a composição florística das epífitas vasculares, classificadas de acordo com as categorias ecológicas e síndromes de dispersão. Foram realizadas comparações das similaridades florísticas com outras florestas também com clima sazonal. As coletas foram depositadas no Herbário Rioclarense (HRCB), depois de identificadas através de consulta bibliográfica, a especialistas e comparação com material de herbário. Foram registradas 87 espécies pertencentes a 51 gêneros e 13 famílias, sendo a FP a fitofisionomia mais rica. Orchidaceae, Polypodiaceae, Bromeliaceae e Piperaceae foram as famílias mais representativas nas duas fitofisionomias. Das espécies amostradas, 72,4% são anemocóricas e 87,4% holoepífitas obrigatórias. Sete espécies encontram-se ameaçadas ou quase ameaçadas de extinção no estado de São Paulo, duas classificadas como "presumivelmente extintas". A área estudada foi mais similar a áreas no Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul e Argentina. O presente estudo registra uma das maiores riquezas de epífitas vasculares já encontrada em locais com clima sazonal no Domínio Atlântico, fato que demonstra a importância da conservação e estudos em fragmentos, mesmo que pequenos, alterados e imersos em ambientes antrópicos.

Abstract We evaluated the floristic composition of vascular epiphytes, and classified them according to their ecological categories and dispersion syndrome, in a Swamp Forest (SF) and a Seasonal Semideciduous Forest (SSF), in Botucatu municipality, São Paulo. Sampling was carried monthly during one year. Comparisons with other epiphytes surveys were carried, using Jaccard Index. For species identifications, we used taxonomic literature, consult to herbarium specimens and experts. The collected specimens are deposited at the Herbário Rioclarense (HRCB). We identified 87 species, belonging to 51 genera and 13 families; the SF was the richest physiognomy. Orchidaceae, Polypodiaceae, Bromeliaceae and Piperaceae are the most representative families. Of the species sampled 2.4% are anemocoric and 87.4% are obligatory holoepiphytes. Seven species are threatened or near threatened; two of them are presumably extinct. The studied area is more similar to sites in Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina. The present work recorded one of the major species richness in seasonal forest in the Atlantic Domain, what demonstrates the importance of floristic surveys and the protection of these small and neglected forest patches.
