Abstract Background: respiratory insufficiency is a syndrome with a great impact on hospital admissions, morbidity and mortality. The applicability of High-flow nasal oxygen has been the subject of interest in critically ill patients. Objective: to know the effectiveness of High-flow nasal oxygen as a treatment for respiratory insufficiency in adult patients admitted to the intensive care units. Methods: systematic reviews of effectiveness using the PICO strategy and recommendations from the Joanna Briggs Institute. The survey was carried out in august 2021 using the PubMed and EBSCOhost access platforms. Results: 583 results were identified. Six randomized clinical trials were analyzed. The selection was made after elimination of duplicates; title reading, abstract reading and full text reading according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses diagram. Conclusion: high-flow nasal oxygen proved to be comfortable, tolerable and effective in the treatment of hypoxemic and hypercapnic respiratory insufficiency. It was effective when compared with conventional oxygen therapy in the post-extubation of hypoxemic patients and in reducing partial pressure of carbon dioxide when compared with Non-Invasive Ventilation in hypercapnic patients.

Resumen Marco contextual: la insuficiencia respiratoria es un síndrome que tiene un gran impacto en los ingresos hospitalarios, la morbilidad y mortalidad. La aplicabilidad del oxígeno nasal de alto flujo ha sido objeto de interés en pacientes críticos. Objetivo: conocer la efectividad del oxígeno nasal de alto flujo en el tratamiento de la insuficiencia respiratoria en adultos en unidades de cuidados intensivos. Métodos: revision sistemática de efectividad utilizando la estrategia PICO y recomendaciones del Instituto Joanna Briggs. La búsqueda se llevó a cabo en agosto de 2021 utilizando las plataformas de acceso PubMed y EBSCOhost. Resultados: se identificaron 583 resultados. Se analizaron seis ensayos clínicos aleatorios. La selección se realizó después de la eliminación de duplicados; lectura de títulos, de resúmenes y de texto completo siguiendo el diagrama Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Conclusión: el Oxígeno nasal de alto flujo demostró ser cómodo, tolerable y eficaz en el tratamiento de la insuficiencia respiratoria hipoxémica e hipercápnica. Fue eficaz en comparación con la oxigenoterapia convencional en la postextubación de pacientes hipoxémicos y en la reducción de la presión parcial de dióxido de carbono en comparación con la Ventilación No Invasiva en pacientes hipercápnicos.

A aplicabilidade do oxigénio nasal de alto fluxo tem sido alvo de interesse no doente crítico. Objetivo: conhecer a efetividade do oxigénio nasal de alto fluxo no tratamento da insuficiência respiratória no adulto em unidades de cuidados intensivos. Métodos: revisão sistemática de efetividade que utiliza a estratégia PICO e recomendações do Joanna Briggs Institute. A pesquisa foi realizada em agosto de 2021 com recurso às plataformas de acesso PubMed e EBSCOhost. Resultados: identificaram-se 583 resultados. Foram analisados seis ensaios clínicos randomizados. A seleção foi feita após eliminação de duplicados; leitura do título, resumos e textos integrais de acordo com o diagrama Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Conclusão: o oxigénio nasal de alto fluxo revelou-se confortável, tolerável e eficaz no tratamento da insuficiência respiratória hipoxémica e hipercápnica. Foi eficaz quando comparado com oxigenoterapia convencional na pós-extubação de doentes hipoxémicos e na redução da pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono quando comparado com a Ventilação Não Invasiva nos doentes hipercápnicos.

Abstract Background: prone Position is a well-established evidence-based clinical practice in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation. Little evidence in non-intubated patients is known. Due to the increasing rate of acute respiratory distress syndrome, the need to know the effectiveness in non-intubated patients has emerged. Objective: to know the effectiveness of prone position in the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome in non-intubated adults. Methodology: Systematic reviews based on the manual of Joanna Briggs Institute and carried out using PICO strategy. Research conducted in August 2021 in the access platforms Web of Science, PubMed, and EBSCO Host. Selection was done after elimination of duplicates, title reading, reading of abstracts, and full texts according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses diagram. Results: 741 results were identified, and seven were included in the review. Conclusion: Early prone position is advantageous in non-intubated patients with mild and moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome. A risk intervention in non-intubated patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Mortality/survival, physiological/clinical, adverse events/effects and functioning outcomes were identified as predictors of success/failure of prone position.

Resumo Enquadramento: o decúbito ventral é uma prática clínica baseada na evidência que se encontra bem estabelecida em pacientes com Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome submetidos a ventilação mecânica invasiva. Porém, existe parca evidência em pacientes não intubados. Face ao aumento da taxa de Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, emergiu a necessidade de conhecer a sua eficácia em pacientes não intubados. Objetivo: conhecer a efetividade do decúbito ventral no tratamento da Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome em adultos não intubados. Metodologia: revisão sistemática fundamentada no manual de Joanna Briggs Institute, com recurso à estratégia PICO. Pesquisa realizada em agosto de 2021, nas plataformas de acesso Web of Science, PubMed e EBSCO Host. Seleção realizada após eliminação de duplicados, leitura do título, de resumos e textos integrais de acordo com o diagrama Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Resultados: identificaram-se 741 resultados, sendo sete os incluídos na revisão. Conclusão: O decúbito ventral precoce revelou-se vantajoso em pacientes não intubados com Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome ligeira e moderada. É uma intervenção de risco em pacientes não intubados com Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome grave. Foram identificados indicadores de mortalidade/ sobrevida, fisiológicos/ clínicos, de eventos/ efeitos adversos e indicadores funcionais como preditores de sucesso/ insucesso do decúbito ventral.

Resumen Marco contextual: posición prona es una práctica clínica, basada en evidencia, conocida en pacientes con Síndrome de Dificultad Respiratoria Aguda con ventilación mecánica invasiva. Hay poca evidencia en pacientes no entubados. La creciente tasa de síndrome de distrés respiratorio agudo originó la necesidad de desarrollar esfuerzos para conocer su efectividad en pacientes no intubados. Objetivo: conocer la efectividad del decúbito prono en el tratamiento del síndrome de distrés respiratorio agudo en adultos no intubados. Metodología: revisión sistemática basadas en el manual del Instituto Joanna Briggs y mediante la estrategia PICO. La búsqueda ocurrió en agosto 2021 en las plataformas de acceso Web of Science, PubMed y EBSCO Host. Selección realizada por previa eliminación de duplicados, lectura de títulos, resúmenes y textos completos de acuerdo con el diagrama Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Resultados: se identificaron 741 resultados, siete incluyeron la revisión. Conclusión: la posición prona temprana demostró ser ventajosa en pacientes no intubados con Síndrome de Dificultad Respiratoria Aguda leve y moderado. Intervención riesgosa en pacientes no intubados con Síndrome de Dificultad Respiratoria Aguda grave. Indicadores de mortalidad/supervivencia, fisiológicos/clínicos, de eventos/efectos adversos e indicadores funcionales, fueron identificados como predictores de éxito/fracaso de la posición prono.

Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la inoculación con L. buchneri liofilizado y/o activado sobre las poblaciones de bacterias de ácido láctico en ensilajes de maíz. Los tratamientos experimentales consistieron en ensilaje de maíz sin aditivo y ensilaje con los inoculantes L. buchneri 1 × 10 5 ufc/g, aplicados según las recomendaciones del fabricante (1 g/tonelada de forraje) en las formas de inoculante liofilizado e inoculante preactivado. Se identificaron aislados purificados de ensilajes de maíz con y sin inocu lación, y el 93% de los aislados correspondieron a bacterias de ácido láctico de la especie L. plantarum. Entre los aislados no se detectaron bacterias de la especie L. buchneri. La aplicación de L. buchneri liofilizado o activado en la masa ensilada promueve un aumento considerable de la población de bacterias de ácido lácticas en los ensilajes de maíz durante todo el período de fermentación.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of inoculation with lyophilised and/or activated Lactobacillus buchneri on lactic acid bacteria populations in corn silage. Experimental treatments consisted of corn silage without additives or silage with the inoculants of L. buchneri (1 x 10 5 cfu/g) applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations (1 g/tonne fodder) in the forms of the lyophilised inoculant and pre-activated inoculant. Purified isolates from corn silage with and without the inoculant were identified, and 93% of the isolates corresponded to the lactic acid bacteria of the species Lactobacillus plantarum. Among the isolates, no bacteria of the species L. buchneri were detected. The application of lyophilised or activated L. buchneri improved the microbiological profile and reduced ethanol production in corn silage, even without being identified among the isolates captured 70 days after ensilage.

Resumo Objetivou-se estimar a prevalência de hipertensão arterial (HA) e os fatores de risco associados em mulheres presas. Utilizou-se dados do Inquérito Nacional de Saúde na População Penitenciária Feminina e em Servidoras Prisionais, investigando-se características sociodemográficas, fatores das prisões, comportamentos e condições de saúde. As informações foram coletadas por meio de questionário autoaplicado, sendo a magnitude da associação estimada por odds ratio e intervalo de confiança de 95%. Das 1.327 participantes, 24,4% eram hipertensas, a maioria tinha 31 anos ou mais (54,6%), 51,5% autorreferiram etnia/cor parda. Após mutual ajustamento pelos fatores de risco associados na análise bivariada, observou-se relação direta e com gradiente entre idade e HA, em que idade igual/maior a 41 anos foi associada independentemente com uma chance sete vezes maior de ter HA, se comparado a quem tem menos de 25 anos. Aquelas que autorreferiram etnia/cor negra apresentaram colesterol alto e estavam obesas, também foram associadas de forma independente com maior prevalência de HA. O maior número de pessoas com que a presa divide cela esteve associado à maior prevalência de há, sem uma relação dose-resposta. Conclui-se que idade, etnia/cor, obesidade, inatividade física e estresse são fatores de risco para HA em mulheres presas.

Abstract The scope was to estimate the prevalence of arterial hypertension (AHT) and associated risk factors among female prisoners. Data from the National Health Survey of the Female Prison Population and Prison Guards were used, investigating sociodemographic variables, prison characteristics, health behaviors and conditions. Information was collected through a self-administered questionnaire, and the magnitude of the association was estimated by the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Of the 1,327 prisoner participants, 24.4% were hypertensive, the majority were 31 years of age or older (54.6%), and 51.5% self-reported mixed race. After adjustment for associated risk factors in the bivariate analysis, a direct relationship between age and AHT was observed, in which age equal to/over 41 years was independently associated with a 7-fold greater chance of having AHT, compared to those under 25 years of age. Those who self-reported mixed race, had high cholesterol, were obese and were also independently associated with a higher prevalence of AHT. The greater the number of people with whom the inmate shares a cell was associated with a higher prevalence of AHT, but without a dose-response relationship. The conclusion drawn is that age, race, obesity, physical inactivity and stress are risk factors for AHT in female prisoners.

Abstract This study evaluated the construct validity of the instrument Oral Health Literacy among diabetics. A probabilistic random sample of 239 diabetics from an infinite population answered the 10 items of the questionnaire. The structural validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis and goodness of fit, chi-square per degrees of freedom ratio (X2/df), comparative fit index (CFI), goodness-of-fit index (GFI), and root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA). Internal consistency was estimated by the average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR). The scores were dichotomized with the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval as the cutoff point. The three-dimensional model presented good quality parameters (X2 /df = 2.459; CFI = 0.988; TLI = 0.981) and poor RMSEA (0.078). Internal consistency was adequate; AVE for the Access, Understand/appraise, and Apply subscales were 0.831, 0.981, and 0.954 and the CR for these subscales were 0.893, 0.962, and 0.822, respectively. Inadequate literacy ranged from 41.8 to 48.1%. The three-dimensional model identified (access, understand/appraise, and apply) showed structural validity, good internal consistency, and understandability.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated forage-free diets supplemented with sodium bicarbonate (SB) based on ground flint corn on intake, apparent nutrient digestibility, ruminal parameters, and N balance. Four rumen-cannulatedDorper × Santa Inês lambs, with a body weight of 43.4 ± 0.85 kg (mean ± standard deviation) were used. The experimental design was a 4×4 Latin square. Each experimental period lasted 21 days. Experimental diets were: positive control, a diet without SB containing 400 g/kg DM of soybean hulls (CONT), and three diets based on ground flint corn, containing 10 (10SB), 20 (20SB) or 30 (30SB) g/kg DM of SB. Intake of neutral and acid detergent fiber was greater for CONT (P < 0.01) when compared to SB. Intake and apparent nutrient digestibility of dry and organic matter, ether extract, and crude protein did not differ. Intake (P = 0.01) and digestibility (P < 0.01) of non-fiber carbohydrates were greater for SB diets and neutral detergent fiber digestibility was greater (P = 0.03) for CONT. The total digestible nutrients and metabolizable energy were greater for SB (P = 0.04). Rumen concentrations of acetate (P < 0.01), isobutyrate (P < 0.01), butyrate (P < 0.01), isovalerate (P < 0.01), and total short-chain fatty acids (P < 0.01) were greater for CONT. Ruminal pH showed a quadratic (P = 0.05) response to SB levels, with greater values for 20SB. Sodium bicarbonate was efficient in increasing ruminal pH at the level of 20 g/kg DM without interfering with the intake and apparent nutrient digestibility characteristics.

RESUMO: O presente estudo avaliou a suplementação de bicarbonato de sódio (BS) em dietas sem forragem à base de milho moído sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes, os parâmetros ruminais e o balanço de N. Foram utilizados quatro cordeiros Dorper × Santa Inês, com um peso corporal inicial de 43,4 ± 0,85 kg (média ± desvio padrão). O delineamento experimental foi quadrado latino 4×4. Cada período experimental durou 21 dias. As dietas experimentais foram: controle positivo, sem BS, contendo 400 g/kg de MS de casca de soja (CONT) e três dietas à base de milho moído, sem casca de soja, contendo 10 (10BS), 20 (20BS) ou 30 (30BS) g/kg de MS de BS. O consumo de fibra em detergente neutro e ácido foi maior (P < 0,01)para o CONT quando comparado com BS. O consumo e a digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca, matéria orgânica, extrato etéreo e proteína bruta não diferiram entre os tratamentos. O consumo (P = 0,01) e digestibilidade (P < 0,01) dos carboidratos não fibrosos foram superiores para as dietas contendo BS e a digestibilidade da fibra em detergente neutro foi maior para o CONT. Os teores de nutrientes digestivos totais e energia metabolizável foram superiores para as dietas contendo BS (P = 0,04). A concentração ruminal de acetato (P < 0,01), isobutirato (P < 0,01), butirato (P < 0,01), isovalerato (P < 0,01) e ácidos graxos totais de cadeia curta (P < 0,01) foram mais elevadas para o CONT. O pHruminal apresentou resposta quadrática (P = 0,05) em relação aos níveis de BS, sendo observado maior pH para os animais alimentados com a dieta 20BS. O BS foi eficiente em aumentar o pHruminal no teor de 20 g/kg MS sem interferir no consumo e na digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes. Portanto, 20 g/kg de MS é a dose indicada de BS em dietas sem forragem para terminação de cordeiros em confinamento.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate uterine involution using ultrasonography techniques during postpartum. Postpartum ultrasonography evaluation (B-mode, color Doppler and Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse elastography) of the uterus was performed by transabdominal approach at immediate after birth and sequentially every 48 hours, during 30 days. The uterine echotexture did not present significant variations (P >0.05) being homogeneous in most evaluations; echogenicity of the uterus increased along the evaluation period (P =0.0452). Progressive and remarkable decrease of the total uterine diameter (UD) were observed (P <0.0001), especially during the first days postpartum. The thickness of uterine wall gradually decreased, as well the endometrial, myometrium and lumen diameters (P <0.0001). Uterine blood flow was assessed by Doppler and decreased during postpartum period, being significantly lower (P=0.0225) on the 30th day of postpartum. Uterine parenchyma presented as homogeneous dark areas (not deformable) on qualitative ultrasound elastography and the means shear velocity values of the uterine wall on quantitative elastography did not differ. This is the first study that evaluate the stiffness of uterine wall in healthy ewes, providing baseline data about quantitative and qualitative stiffness of the normal uterus, and it may be a useful tool for early diagnosis of uterine alterations during the postpartum period, using the reference parameter established for the assessment of uterine integrity during postpartum period.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Older adults present a higher risk of suicide, and Brazil is experiencing a fast population aging. To understand the impact of demographic transition, we compared Brazilian suicide mortality rates (MR) among adults (50+ years) with global rates, those from one high-income country, and those from one middle-income country. Looking for regional disparities, the MR was analyzed among older adults (60+ years) by Brazilian states. METHODS: This was an ecological study based on estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study, from 2000 to 2019. Age-standardized MR and age-specific MR per 100,000 inhabitants were described, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UI). RESULTS: During the period, the annual estimates and the declining trend in mortality were higher in the world than in the studied countries. In 2019, global age-standardized MR was 9.39 (95% UI 8.48-10.29), compared to 5.68 (95% UI 5.40-6.19), 6.01 (95% UI 5.10-7.04), and 6.63 (95% UI 6.43-6.95) in Brazil, Mexico, and England, respectively. In Brazil, despite a significant decline in national rates, stability was observed in 15 states. An increase in aging was only found for men, who presented 3-4 times higher MR than women. The states’ rates presented large differences: in 2019, the rates among men aged 60-64 years varied from 7.24 (95% UI 5.31; 9.85) to 26.32 (95% UI 20.21; 34.50). CONCLUSIONS: The smaller decline in suicide mortality among older Brazilian adults, the increasing risk with aging, and the higher mortality among men indicate the need for specific prevention policies. The variation within states suggests differences in the data quality or in socio-cultural and historical aspects, which requires further investigation.

Resumo: Introdução: A ferramenta Assessing Competencies in Evidence-Based Medicine (ACE) é um questionário recentemente proposto para avaliação de competências em Medicina Baseada em Evidências. Este estudo teve como objetivo validar a versão brasileira da ferramenta ACE. Método: Trata-se de um estudo transversal de validação realizada em duas fases. Na primeira fase, traduziu-se o questionário. Na segunda fase, estudantes de graduação e professores/preceptores do curso de Medicina responderam ao questionário. As propriedades avaliadas foram validade, consistência e confiabilidade internas. Resultado: Incluíram-se 76 estudantes de graduação e 12 professores/preceptores. A média dos professores/preceptores foi significativamente mais alta que a dos alunos (10,25 ± 1,71 versus 8,73 ± 1,80, diferença média de 1,52, IC95% 0,47-2,57, p = 0,005), demonstrando a validade de construto. A versão brasileira da ferramenta ACE obteve consistência (alfa de Cronbach = 0,61) e confiabilidade internas (correlação item-total ≥ 0,15 em 14 dos 15 itens) adequadas. Conclusão: A versão brasileira da ferramenta ACE demonstra propriedades psicométricas aceitáveis e pode ser usada como instrumento para a avaliação de competências para a Medicina Baseada em Evidências em estudantes de Medicina brasileiros.

Abstract: Introduction: The ACE (Assessing Competencies in Evidence-Based Medicine) Tool is a recently developed questionnaire to assess competencies in Evidence-Based Medicine. The aim of this study is to validate the Brazilian version of ACE Tool. Methods: This is a cross-sectional validation study carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the questionnaire was translated. In the second phase, the questionnaire was applied to undergraduate students and teachers/preceptors of the medical course. The evaluated properties were internal validity, consistency and reliability. Results: 76 medical undergraduate students and 12 teachers/preceptors were included. The mean of teachers/preceptors was significantly higher than that of students (10.25±1.71 vs 8.73±1.80, mean difference of 1.52, 95%CI 0.47-2.57, p=0.005), demonstrating construct validity. The Brazilian version of the ACE Tool obtained adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.61) and reliability (item-total correlation ≥ 0.15 in 14 of the 15 items). Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the ACE Tool shows acceptable psychometric properties and can be used as an instrument to assess competencies for Evidence-Based Medicine in Brazilian medical students.

Abstract Food safety, within the context of the hospital’s Food and Nutrition Units (FNU), is one of the key factors in ensuring the quality of the service. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the microbiological contamination of sponges and multipurpose cloths used in a hospital’s FNU, as well as the effectiveness of different disinfection methods. The materials were submitted to viable cell count for total and thermotolerant coliforms, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus, and mesophiles; in addition, efficiency tests of the disinfection methods carried out by the FNU were done by scanning electron microscopy, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, biofilm formation capacity, and virulence factors. The analysis results confirmed the contamination of these utensils, and the disinfection methods used were efficient. Electromicroscopic analysis identified high bacterial adhesion after use, and the isolates were resistant to the antimicrobial penicillin and classified as poor biofilm producers. Sponge isolates showed greater virulence than other materials. Therefore, good practices in food services must follow strict hygiene and disinfection protocols to ensure the safety of the food produced.

Resumo Introdução A tendência de redução da cárie dentária tem sido constatada, apesar de maiores investigações sobre seu padrão e desenvolvimento serem ainda necessárias. Objetivo investigar a influência de variáveis clínicas, sociais e ambientais sobre a cárie em adolescentes de um município brasileiro com água fluoretada, no ano de 2018. Método Empregou-se uma amostra não probabilística de 277 adolescentes de 12 anos, de escolas públicas de Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Exames clínicos foram realizados por examinadores calibrados, para avaliação de cárie, doença periodontal e fluorose, sob critérios da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). Questionários semiestruturados foram aplicados para coletar informações socioambientais. Resultados Indivíduos residentes em regiões com flúor na água em subdoses (OR=3,60, p=0,0006), e aqueles com baixa renda (OR =1,90, p=0,0444), com presença de gengivite (OR = 3,36; p = 0,0016) e cuja razão para a visita ao dentista foi para tratamento dentário (OR=2,41; 0,0203), apresentaram mais chances de terem cárie. Uma redução significativa (p<0,0001) nos índices de cárie foi observada entre 2012 (primeiro levantamento epidemiológico) e 2018. Conclusão A fluoretação das águas de abastecimento público, quando em níveis não adequados, assim como outras variáveis sociais e clínicas, podem influenciar o padrão de cárie nos adolescentes.

Abstract Background Although a trend towards dental caries reduction has been observed, further investigations on its pattern and development are still needed. Objective To investigate the influence of clinical, social and environmental variables on dental caries prevalence in adolescents from a Brazilian municipality supplied with fluoridated water in 2018. Method This study was conducted with a non-probabilistic sample of 277 adolescents aged 12 years of public schools in Nova Friburgo, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Clinical examinations were carried out by calibrated examiners to assess caries, periodontal disease, and fluorosis according to criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO). Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to record socio-environmental information. Results Individuals living in regions supplied with fluoridated water below the minimum required levels (OR=3.60, p=0.0006), with low income (OR=1.90, p=0.0444), presence of gingivitis (OR=3.36; p=0.0016), and whose reason for visiting the dentist was dental treatment (OR=2.41; p=0.0203) were more likely to have dental caries. A significant reduction (p<0.0001) in dental caries indexes was observed between 2012 and 2018. Conclusion Fluoridation of public water supply at unsuitable levels, as well as other social and clinical variables can influence the caries pattern in adolescents.

Resumo Há relatos de efeitos adversos na saúde física e mental dos adolescentes associados ao uso excessivo do smartphone. O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar a dependência do smartphone e os fatores relacionados em adolescentes de uma região do Nordeste brasileiro. Trata-se de estudo transversal realizado em seis Escolas Estaduais de Educação Profissional (EEEPs), na cidade de Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil, desenvolvido entre setembro e outubro de 2019. Participaram 286 adolescentes, entre 15 e 19 anos, que responderam cinco instrumentos de coleta. Análises bivariada e multivariada foram utilizadas para avaliar os fatores relacionados ao desfecho, pelo SPSS versão 23.0. A dependência do smartphone apresentou prevalência de 70,3%, e mostrava associação com menor idade (OR=0,583; p=0,001), menos horas de sono (OR=0,715; p=0,020), mais tempo de uso no final de semana (OR=1,115; p=0,015), queixa de dor cervical (OR=2,206; p=0,020) e suspeita de transtorno mental comum (OR=1,272; p=0,000). Evidenciou-se elevada dependência do smartphone nos adolescentes da amostra, relacionada a múltiplos fatores. Alerta-se para a importância de campanhas educativas que orientem os adolescentes, pais, educadores e profissionais de saúde para os riscos do uso excessivo de smartphones à saúde dos adolescentes.

Abstract Adverse effects on the physical and mental health of adolescents associated with excessive smartphone use have been reported. This paper aims to assess adolescent smartphone addiction and related factors in a region in Northeastern Brazil. This cross-sectional study was carried out in six State-run Professional Education Schools in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, from September to October 2019 with 286 adolescents aged 15-19 years who completed five data collection instruments. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess factors related to the outcome using SPSS version 23.0. Smartphone addiction prevalence rate was 70,3% and was associated with being underage (OR=0,583; p=0,001), fewer sleep hours (OR=0,715; p=0,020), longer use on weekends (OR=1,115; p=0,015), cervical pain (OR=2,206; p=0,020), and suspected common mental disorder (OR=1,272; p=0,000). A high smartphone addiction level was observed among adolescents in the sample and was related to multiple factors. Attention should be drawn to the importance of educational campaigns to guide adolescents, parents, educators, and health professionals about the risks of excessive smartphone use to the health of adolescents.
