RESUMO A paca (Cuniculus paca) tem encorajado inúmeras pesquisas, tornando-a modelo experimental tanto em humanos como na veterinária, além da exploração econômica de seus cortes cárneos, que favoreceu diretamente sua importância zootécnica. Não há descrições anatômicas, microscópicas e mensurações da laringe desse roedor. Foram dissecadas oito laringes de pacas, provenientes do setor de Animais Silvestres da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - Universidade Estadual Paulista. Observou-se que a laringe localiza-se na região ventral do pescoço, ventral ao esôfago, conectando a faringe à traqueia, possuindo formato cilíndrico e irregular. As cartilagens laríngeas (epiglote, tireóide, cricóide e aritenóidea) são interligadas e possuem formatos variados. A cartilagem tireóide demonstrou-se maior em comprimento e largura, comparativamente às demais. As cartilagens laríngeas foram submetidas a processamento histológico e coradas em hematoxilina-eosina e tricrômio de Masson. A cartilagem epiglote foi corada em azul de toluidina. As cartilagens laríngeas tireóide, cricóide e a porção inferior das aritenóides são de origem hialina; em contrapartida, a epiglote e a porção superior das aritenóides, de origem elástica. Esta última cartilagem demonstrou corpúsculos gustativos. Os resultados poderão auxiliar tanto nos atendimentos veterinários quanto nos programas de conservação desse roedor.

ABSTRACT Paca (Cuniculus paca) has encouraged research as an experimental model both in the human medicine and veterinary, as well as the economic exploitation of its meat cuts, which favored its zootechnical use. There are no anatomical, microscopic descriptions and measurements of the larynx in this rodent. Eight pacas were dissected from the wild animal’s sector of the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of the University of the State of São Paulo. The larynx was observed located in the ventral region of the neck, ventral to the esophagus, connecting the pharynx to the trachea, with cylindrical and irregular shape. Laryngeal cartilages (epiglottic, thyroid, cricoid and arytenoid) are interconnected and have different shapes. Thyroid showed greater length and width, compared to the others. Laryngeal cartilages were submitted to histological processing and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. The epiglottic cartilage was stained with toluidine blue. Laryngeal cartilages thyroid, cricoid and the lower portion of the arytenoids are of hyaline origin and, in contrast, the epiglottis and the upper portion of the arytenoids are elastic. This latter cartilage demonstrated taste buds. The results will be able to auxiliate in veterinary care and as well as the conservation programs for this rodent.

RESUMO A pelvimetria consiste na determinação métrica das dimensões pélvicas, e sua utilização está diretamente relacionada à reprodução. O momento de fechamento da cartilagem dos centros de ossificação varia de acordo com o osso, algumas fechando já na vida uterina e outras permanecendo presentes por vários anos. Objetivou-se avaliar, radiograficamente, os diâmetros pélvicos, mediante pelvimetria, durante os 24 primeiros meses de vida de pacas, o segundo maior roedor brasileiro e sobre o qual tem havido grande interesse científico, para a determinação aproximada da idade. Foram utilizadas 12 pacas, as quais foram radiografadas mensalmente a partir do nascimento até 24 meses de idade, com os animais anestesiados. As pacas são animais dolicopélvicos e com pelve apresentando forte tendência ao crescimento constante durante os 12 primeiros meses de vida, o que pode ser útil na determinação aproximada da idade em animais que não possuem data precisa de nascimento, por exemplo.

ABSTRACT The pelvimetry consists of the metric determination of the pelvis dimensions and its use is directly related to the reproduction. The cartilage closure time of the ossification centers varies according to the bone, some closing already in the uterine life and others remaining present for many years. The objective was to evaluate, radiographically, the pelvic diameters by pelvimetry during the first 24 months of life in pacas, the second lagest Brazilian rodent and an animal that has shown big recent scientific interest, aiming the estimated age determination. Twelve pacas were used, which were monthly radiographed up from birth until 24 months old, with the animals anesthetized. The pacas are dolicopelvic animals and with pelvis presenting strong tendency to constant growth along the 12 first months of age, fact that can be useful in the approximated animals’ age determination that do not have precise birth date, for example.

RESUMO Este trabalho se baseou na descrição morfológica da paca (Cuniculus paca), espécie selvagem pertencente à ordem dos roedores, típica de regiões tropicais, sendo o seu conhecimento anatômico detalhado muito importante para sua conservação, experimentação e comercialização, pois ainda são escassos na literatura os trabalhos sobre morfologia de espécies selvagens. Macroscopicamente, o pâncreas da paca é formado por lóbulos, organizados em ramificações difusas, e, microscopicamente, tal órgão possui uma camada de tecido conjuntivo frouxo, a partir da qual partem septos, que dividem a glândula em lóbulos, compostos de ácinos e ilhotas pancreáticas.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to describe the morphology of pacas (Cuniculus paca), a wild species belonging to the order Rodentia, found in tropical areas. The detailed anatomical knowledge of pacas is very important for conservation, experimental studies and commercialization because studies in literature about wild species are scarce. The pancreas of paca has lobes organized in diffuse branches at the macroscopic level and microscopically this organ has a loose connective tissue layer, originating septa that divide the gland into lobes composed of acini and pancreatic islets.

RESUMO Objetiva-se, com este trabalho, estudar a técnica de aspiração folicular por videolaparoscopia (LapOPU) em pacas, descrevendo detalhes do procedimento cirúrgico, complicações e taxa de recuperação oocitária. Para isso, foram utilizadas nove fêmeas, saudáveis, adultas, não gestantes e mantidas em cativeiro, totalizando 39 procedimentos. Quandoo plano anestésico cirúrgico foi alcançado, as fêmeas foram posicionadas em Trendelenburg com 20º de angulação. Três trocáteres foram colocados nas regiões inguinais direita e esquerda e hipogástrica. O Abdômen foi insuflado com CO2, e a pressão intra-abdominal foi mantida em 10mmHg. Punções foliculares foram realizadas manipulando-se os ovários com pinças atraumáticas. Para aspirações foliculares, usou-se agulha de 18G com bisel curto acoplado ao sistema de vácuo com pressão não excedendo 65mmHg. Oócitos foram recuperados em tubos de centrifugação de 50mL contendo meio composto de PBS suplementado com 10UI/mL de heparina e mantidos a 36ºC. Usou-se software R para análise estatística. Testaram-se a distribuição normal dos dados (teste de Shapiro) e a homocedasticidade das variâncias (teste de Barlett) e se usaram estatísticas descritivas (média±DP) para apresentar os resultados. Das 39 videolaparoscopias, só foi possível realizar LapOPUem 30 delas (76,92%). O tempo cirúrgico total das LapOPU foi de 37,34 ± 18,53 minutos. Os números totais de folículos visualizados, folículos aspirados e oócitos recuperados foram: 502, 415 e 155, respectivamente. E os mesmos parâmetros por animal foram: 14,34 ± 12,23, 11,86 ± 10,03 e 4,43 ± 4,69, respectivamente. A taxa de recuperação foi de 32,56 ± 27,32%. Assim, conclui-se que o posicionamento caudal de portais, com ligeira triangulação, permite uma boa visualização da cavidade abdominal e facilita a manipulação dos ovários, sendo essa técnica de LapOPU viável em pacas e de fácil execução.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work is study the laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LapOPU) technique in spotted paca, describing surgery details, complications and oocyte recovery rate. Nine healthy adult non-pregnant captive females were used, in a total of 39 procedures. When the surgical plane of anaesthesia was achieved, the females were positioned at 20º Trendelenburg. Three 6mm trocars were placed on right and left inguinal and hypogastric regions. Abdomen was inflated with CO2 and the intra-abdominal pressure was stablished in 10mmHg. Follicular punctures were performed moving the ovaries with atraumatic forceps. For punctures, an 18-gauge 3.5 inch long needle attached to a vacuum system with pressure not exceeding 65mmHg was used. Oocytes were recovered into 50mL centrifuge tubes with media composed of PBS supplemented with 10 IU/mL of heparin and kept at 36°C. R Software was used for statistical analysis. Data normality distribution (Shapiro test) and variances homoscedasticity (Bartlett test) were tested and descriptive statistics (mean±SD) was used to present the results. It was only possible to perform LapOPU in 30 of 39 laparoscopies (76.92%). The surgical total time was 37.34 ± 18.53 minutes. The total number of visualized follicles, aspirated follicles, and retrieved oocytes were 502, 415, and 155, respectively. And the same parameters per animal were: 14.34 ± 12.23, 11.86 ± 10.03, and 4.43 ± 4.69 respectively. Oocyte recovery rate was 32.56 ± 27.32%. In conclusion, caudal positioning of portals with slight triangulation allows good viewing of the abdominal cavity and eases the manipulation of the ovaries. Thus this described LapOPU technique is feasible in spotted paca and easy to perform.

Considerando a importância da paca (Cuniculus paca, Linnaeus, 1766), tanto como fonte proteica alternativa para a população quanto pela possibilidade de vir a se tornar um animal de experimentação e pela falta de informações sobre a sua anatomia, objetivou-se descrever a morfologia macroscópica e histológica do estômago e do duodeno desse roedor, reconhecendo as relações, forma e posição que esses órgãos estabelecem entre si e com outros órgãos. O estômago da paca é unicavitário, está no plano médio mais voltado para o antímero esquerdo, transversalmente, na região hipocôndrica em posição ventrocaudal, interposto entre o esôfago e o duodeno. O duodeno da paca se inicia em sequência ao estômago, segue caudalmente até o nível da quinta ou sexta vértebra lombar, na altura das quais se curva e toma direção cranial, dirigindo-se até o nível da transição entre a última vértebra torácica e a primeira vértebra lombar, onde se continua como jejuno. Histologicamente, o estômago e o duodeno da paca possuem o padrão característico da arquitetura dos órgãos ocos, apresentando as seguintes túnicas: mucosa, submucosa, muscular e serosa. Da forma que se conduziu este estudo, conclui-se que o estômago e duodeno da paca, de forma geral, possuem características morfológicas macroscópicas e histológicas semelhantes às dos animais domésticos e de outros roedores selvagens.

ABSTRACT Considering the importance of paca (Cuniculus paca, Linnaeus, 1766) as an alternative protein source for the population as well as the possibility to become an experimental model and the lack of information regarding to the anatomy of this species, the present study aims to describe the gross anatomy and the histology of the stomach and duodenum of this rodent, recognizing the relations, shape and position that these organs establish between themselves and among other organs. The paca stomach is monocavitary; it is located at the median plane, more toward the left antimere, transversally, at the hypochondriac region in a ventrocaudal position, interposed between the esophagus and duodenum. The duodenum of paca begins in sequence of the stomach, following caudally until the fifth or sixth lumbar vertebra, at this level it curves and takes the cranial direction, going until the transition level between the last thoracic vertebra and the first lumbar vertebra where it continues as jejune. Histologically, the stomach and duodenum of paca have the characteristic pattern of the hollow organs architecture, presenting the following layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscular and serous. As this study was conducted, it is possible to conclude that the stomach and duodenum of paca, in general, present gross anatomical and histological characteristics similar to the domestic animals and to the other wild rodents.

Em razão da falta de informações sobre a morfologia do cervo-do-pantanal, objetivou-se apresentar a morfologia das câmaras gástricas desse cervídeo. Macroscopicamente, o estômago do cervo-do-pantanal é formado pelo rúmen, retículo, omaso e abomaso, assemelhando-se aos ruminantes domésticos. Microscopicamente, o rúmen e o abomaso são semelhantes aos animais domésticos, já o retículo e o omaso apresentam características específicas, como acentuada queratinização no ápice das pequenas projeções epiteliais do retículo e pregas omasais revestidas por discretas papilas.

Based on the lack of information regarding the morphology of marsh deer, this work aims to describe some morphological aspects of the gastric chamber in this species, collaborating with future investigations, mainly related to rational handling in this cervid. This work aimed to describe the morphology of the gastric chamber of the marsh deer, characterizing the external and internal macroscopical details and the microscopical architecture of these structures by light microscopy. Macroscopically, the marsh deer stomach is formed by the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum similar to the domestic ruminants. Microscopically, rumen and abomasum are similar to the domestic ruminants. The reticulum and the omasum, however, present specific characteristics such as keratin on the top of the reticulum, small epithelial projections and omasum folds covered with discrete papillae.

Neste estudo foi implantado um retalho de biomembrana de látex natural em substituição a um fragmento da parede de estômago de coelhos albinos, raça Nova Zelândia, adultos, machos não castrados (n=12), com o intuito de avaliar o processo de reparação tecidual no que se refere à biocompatibilidade, à capacidade de reparação tecidual e a possíveis complicações. Aos 15, 30 e 60 dias de pós-operatório, os animais foram sacrificados, mediante o emprego de tiopental sódico (200mg kg-1), para posterior avaliação macroscópica e análise histopatológica da interface do implante com o tecido nativo. Macroscopicamente, aos 15, 30 e 60 dias de pós-operatório observou-se presença de aderências na face serosa. Aos 60 dias de pós-operatório, em todos os animais avaliados, a biomembrana não foi encontrada. Sob microscopia de luz, aos 15 e 30 dias, verificaram-se descontinuidade das camadas muscular e mucosa, presença de infiltrado inflamatório polimorfonuclear. Foram visualizados vasos sanguíneos e fibras musculares. Aos 60 dias, as camadas mucosa, muscular estavam completamente reconstituídas. O implante foi biocompatível e forneceu arcabouço para orientação e desenvolvimento das camadas teciduais do estômago, mediante processos de reparação, restabelecendo a estrutura do órgão.

In this study, biomembrane of natural latex was utilized to replace a section of the stomach wall of New Zealand rabbits, adult and non-castrated males (n=12), in order to evaluate the tissue repair process in regards to its biocompatility, scar formation ability and possible complications. The animals were euthanized at fifteen, 30 and 60 days post operation, by use of sodium thiopental (200mg kg-1), followed by macroscopic and histopathological analysis of the implant interface with the native tissue. Macroscopically, at fifteen, 30, and 60 days post operation adherence was observed in the serosal wall. At 60 days post operation, the biomembrane is not in the stomach. Under light microscopy, at fifteen and 30 days, discontinuity of muscle layer and mucosa layer, and presence of polimorfonuclear population of inflammatory cells was observed. New vessels and muscle fibers were observed. At 60 days, the mucosa and muscle layers were complete reconstituted. The implants were biocompatible and had provided the mainframe for orientation and development of the tissue layers through repairing processes, thus reestablishing the organ structure.

Descreveram-se a morfologia, morfometria e ultraestrutura de segmentos das porções torácica e abdominal da aorta de quatro pacas (Cuniculus paca) adultas. Os segmentos aórticos foram analisados à microscopia de luz e à microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Mensuraram-se as espessuras do complexo formado pelas túnicas íntima e média, além da túnica adventícia. Os valores referentes à espessura do complexo formado pelas túnicas íntima e média da aorta torácica cranial foram significativamente maiores (média: 702,19µm) que os valores de outros segmentos aórticos analisados (médias: 354,18µm; 243,55µm). As camadas das paredes do vaso apresentaram variações entre si quanto à estrutura e espessura, supostamente em razão de adaptação à exigência funcional.

The aim of this study was to describe the morphology, morphometry and ultrastructure of segments of thoracic and abdominal aorta portions in four male and female paca (Cuniculus paca). Parts of the segments were examined by light microscopy and part by scanning electron microscopy. Thickness measurements of the tunica intima and media complex and tunica adventitia of the aorta were taken. In all animals the thickness values for the tunica intima and media complex of the cranial thoracic aorta were significantly higher (mean: 702.19µm) when compared to the values of other aortic segments analyzed (means: 354.18µm; 243.55µm). The layers of the vessel walls show variations in structure and thickness, presumably due to an adaptation to functionaldemand.

Descreveu-se a morfologia do útero de cutias nulíparas e não nulíparas por meio de ovariossalpingoisterectomia. A análise macroscópica do útero foi realizada in loco e na peça retirada. Segmentos das porções proximal, média e distal do órgão foram colhidas, fixadas e preparadas histologicamente, sendo as amostras analisadas à microscopia de luz, e realizada a histomorfometria das camadas uterinas. Topograficamente, o útero localiza-se na região sublombar, caudalmente aos rins, em continuação aos ovários e às tubas uterinas, estendendo-se até à entrada da pelve, onde se posiciona dorsalmente à bexiga. Caracteriza-se como do tipo duplo, embora culmine em apenas um óstio cervical externo. Microscopicamente, a mucosa uterina é formada por variações do epitélio, de cilíndrico a pseudoestratificado, que se apoia em tecido conjuntivo frouxo, onde se observam glândulas endometriais revestidas por epitélio cilíndrico, além da presença de vasos sanguíneos. A camada muscular subdivide-se em interna ou submucosa, média ou vascular e externa ou subserosa. A camada serosa é composta por tecido conjuntivo e mesotélio. Na histomorfometria, verificou-se que a espessura uterina total e a espessura da camada mucosa, em média, foram maiores nas fêmeas não nulíparas.

The uterine morphology was studied through ovarysalpingohysterectomy in nulliparous and non nulliparous agoutis (Dasyprocta azare). The uterus macroscopic analysis was done "in loco" and in the removed specimens. Fragments of the proximal, media and distal portions of this viscerae were collected, fixed and histologically prepared, and the samples analyzed through light microscopy and through the histomorphometry of the uterine layers. Topographycally, the uterus of this rodent is located on the sub lumbar area, caudally to the kidneys, and following the ovaries and uterine horns, getting through the pelvic entrance, where it is located dorsally to the bladder. It is characterized as a double uterus, although there is only an external cervical os. Microscopically, the uterine mucous is formed by epithelial elevations, from cylindrical to pseudostratified epithelium, which is supported by a loose connective tissue where endometrial glands covered by cylindrical epithelium can be observed, besides blood vessels. The muscle layer is subdivided in inner or submuscous, median or vascular and outer or subserous. The serous layer is composed of a connective tissue and mesothelium. In the histomorphometry analysis, the total uterine thickness and the mucous layer thickness, in average, were bigger on non nulliparous females.

The curimbata constitutes species of fish of wide distribution in the Neotropical area and high economic value. This work focused to evaluate processing yield and the chemical composition of the fillet in the male and female migratories and residents stocks of Prochilodus lineatus. The using the plotting was completely randomized by 4x2 factorial scheme, having as factors four stocks (one resident and three migratories) and two genders (male and female) with thirty replicates, considering each fish as an experimental unit. Each individual was submitted to the manual filleted and determination of the corporal composition (texts of moisture, crude protein, lipids, ashes and energy). They following parameters of yield had been evaluated (%): visceral entire fish (RPIE %); yield of boneless fillet (RFILE %) and processing yield of fillet with bone (RFILEC %). There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the stocks and the studied samples. The biggest yield of boneless fillet were observed for the fish of the migrator stock I (45.77%). Males and females of the migrator stock I presented biggest fillet yield (46.79% and 43.93%, respectively), while the migrator III presented smaller yield (37.29% for males and 38.44% for females). The migratories stocks I, II and III presented values significantly smaller (p<0.05) of lipids level (0.98%; 2.01% and 1.97%, respectively) and an increase in the content of corporal protein in relation to the resident stock. It concluded that the male weighing 591g on average, belonging of the stock migrator I (captured in December), presented better thread yield and the stocks migratories are fish that has low fat tenor and high protein tenor.

O curimbatá constitui espécie de peixe de ampla distribuição na região Neotropical e de elevado valor econômico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar o rendimento e a composição química do filé de machos e fêmeas em estoques migradores e residentes de Prochilodus lineatus. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 4 x 2, tendo como fatores quatro estoques (um residente e três migradores) e dois sexos (macho e fêmea) com trinta repetições, considerando cada peixe como unidade amostral. Cada indivíduo foi submetido à filetagem manual e determinação da composição corporal (teores de umidade, proteína bruta, lipídios, cinzas e energia). Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: rendimento do peixe inteiro eviscerado (RPIE %); rendimento de filé sem osso (RFILE %) e rendimento de filé com osso (RFILEC %). Houve diferença significativa (p<0,05) entre os estoques e amostras estudados. Os maiores rendimentos de filé sem osso foram observados para os peixes do estoque migrador I (45,77%). Machos e fêmeas do estoque migrador I apresentaram maiores rendimentos de filé (46,79% e 43,93%, respectivamente), enquanto que o migrador III apresentou menor rendimento (37,29% para machos e 38,44% para fêmeas). Os estoques migradores I , II e III apresentaram valores significativamente menores (p<0,05) do nível de lipídios (0,98%; 2,01% e 1,97%, respectivamente) e aumento no conteúdo de proteína corporal em relação ao estoque residente. Conclui-se que os machos pesando em média 591g, pertencentes ao estoque migrador I (capturados em dezembro), apresentaram melhores rendimentos de filetagem e os estoques migradores são peixes que tem baixo teor de gordura e alto teor de proteína.

Comparou-se o uso do etil-cianoacrilato e do octil-cianoacrilato em córneas de 36 coelhos após ceratectomia lamelar (diâmetro e profundidade padronizados). Os animais foram distribuídos em dois grupos, segundo o tipo de adesivo, e redistribuídos em seis subgrupos com três animais cada, para as avaliações histológicas aos 3, 7, 14, 21, 30 e 60 dias de pós-operatório. As avaliações clínicas gerais (diárias) e as oftálmicas (dias 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30, 44 e 60), indicaram diferença entre os dois grupos, quanto ao consumo de água, atitude, blefarite, edema da córnea e teste da fluoresceína. O Tempo de permanência, sobre o leito corneal, do adesivo octil-cianoacrilato (17,22 dias), foi maior que o do etil-cianoacrulato (7,66 dias). A histopatologia, para ambos os grupos, mostrou que a re-epitelização e a organização do colágeno ocorreram sem graves intercorrências. O grupo tratado com o etil-cianoacrilato apresentou, nas fases iniciais, reação inflamatória mais evidente que o tratado com octil-cianoacrilato. Neste, a re-epitelização e a organização do colágeno ocorreram mais lentamente e com reação inflamatória discreta. Sob os pontos de vista clínico e de avaliação histológica simples, os resultados mostraram vantagens do octil-cianoacrilato, entretanto, a cicatrização da córnea ocorreu em ambos os grupos.

The use of ethyl-cyanoacrylate and octyl-cyanoacrylate were clinically and histopathologically compared on the corneas of 36 rabbits after lamellar keratectomy (standardized diameter and depth). The animals were distributed into two groups, one for each type of adhesive. From each group, six subgroups were histopathologically evaluated on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, 30th, and 60th day post-operative. General (daily) and ophthalmic (days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30, 44, and 60) evaluations clinically indicated that there were significant differences for the variables water intake, attitude, blepharitis, corneal edema, and fluorescein test. The adhesive permanence time for octyl-cyanoacrylate (17.22 days) was greater than that for ethyl-cyanoacrylate (7.66 days). With respect to the histopathological evaluation, corneal epithelization and collagen organization occurred without severe complications. However, treatment with ethyl-cyanoacrylate led to a moderate inflammatory reaction in the initial phases. With octyl-cyanoacrylate, re-epithelization and collagen organization proceeded more slowly with a discrete inflammatory reaction in the initial phases. From clinical and histopathologic points of view, octyl-cyanoacrylate showed advantages over ethyl-cyanoacrylate, whereas wound healing was achieved in both groups without major complications.

Durante quatro anos foram detectadas 25 prenhezes, em 13 diferentes pacas, por meio de ultra-sonografia. Após a detecção ultra-sonográfica, as fêmeas foram separadas em baias individuais para o nascimento dos filhotes e aí mantidas até o desmame. Houve nascimento de apenas um animal por parto, ressaltando a característica reprodutiva de uniparidade, o que sugere a tendência de nascimento de apenas um filhote por parto, nessa espécie.

During four years 25 pregnancies were detected in 13 different pacas by means of ultrasonography at a wild animal section. After ultrasound detection, females were separated in individual sets for delivering and kept until weaning of newborns. Only one newborn by delivery occurred, remarking the reproductive characteristic of uniparity, what suggests the trend of only one newborn in each delivery.
