INTRODUÇÃO: A leishmaniose visceral apresenta comportamento urbano em algumas cidades brasileiras, sendo os cães domésticos as principais fontes de infecção. Em Cuiabá-MT, a leishmaniose visceral canina foi diagnosticada e caracterizada, como recomendação do Ministério da Saúde. MÉTODOS: Amostras biológicas de cães suspeitos foram analisadas por eletroforese de isoenzimas. Foram utilizadas a enzima 6PGDH e a cepa de referência IOC/L0566 (MHOM/BR/1975/M2903) de Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, como um dos controles. RESULTADOS: A análise eletroforética revelou que os isolados pertenciam à espécie L. (L.) infantum. CONCLUSÕES: Os autores ressaltam a importância da caracterização da espécie, principalmente em cidades com infecção mista, como Cuiabá.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis presents urban behavior in some Brazilian cities, with domestic dogs as the main infection source. In Cuiabá, MT, canine visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed and characterized as recommended by the Ministry of Health. METHODS: Biological samples from suspected canine carriers were analyzed by the isoenzyme electrophoresis technique. The 6PGDH enzyme and reference strain IOC/L0566 (MHOM/BR/1975/M2903) of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum was used as one of the controls. RESULTS: Electrophoresis analysis revealed that the canine isolates belonged to the species L. (L.) infantum. CONCLUSIONS: The authors emphasize the importance of species characterization, particularly in areas of mixed infection like Cuiabá.

No presente trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a soroprevalência da infecção por Toxoplasma gondii, em 708 matrizes suínas dos municípios de Nova Mutum e Diamantino do Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. As amostras de soro foram examinadas por meio da reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI). Foi encontrada a frequência de 12,8% de soros positivos, com diluições iguais ou superiores a 64. Portanto, os dados obtidos reforçam a necessidade de um manejo de criação adequado, visando à minimização do risco de infecção de suínos por T. gondii.

This report aimed to assess the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in 708 swine matrices in Nova Mutum and Diamantino in the state of Mato Grosso, Central-West Brazil. Serum samples were examined by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). It was found a seroprevalence of 12.8%, considering titers >64. Therefore, the data reinforce the need for appropriate management of swine raising to minimize the risk of infection of pigs with T. gondii.

O presente trabalho refere-se a pesquisa dos aspectos epidemiológicos da dirofilariose canina no perímetro urbano de Cuiabá, através de exame de sangue e sorologia. Examinou-se o sangue de 822 cães: em 11,81% das amostras, detectaram-se, por meio de "Immunoblot", anticorpos contra antígenos de Dirofilaria immitis adulto, enquanto em 0,41% foram encontradas, por meio do teste de Knott modificado, microfilárias de D. immitis. A prevalência da dirofilariose canina em Cuiabá, no período de junho a novembro de 1997, e com a metodologia aplicada, foi de 120,8 casos em cada 1.000 animais. O "Immunoblot" diagnosticou como positivas 11,27% das amostras que estavam consideradas negativas pelo teste de Knott modificado. Os autores analisaram estatisticamente informações sobre raça, sexo, idade e região administrativa de origem dos cães pesquisados. Foi questionada a possibilidade de que os animais pesquisados tivessem viajado a regiões endêmicas, usado microfilaricidas, ou apresentado sintomatologia compatível, bem como estudadas as características ecológicas do local de moradia. Cães com idade variando entre um e nove anos e residentes na região Centro-Oeste apresentaram maior índice de positividade. A maioria não apresentava sintomatologia compatível com a doença, não tinha história clínica do uso de microfilaricidas e/ou preventivos contra dirofilariose canina e nunca havia saído do perímetro urbano de Cuiabá, mas residiam em bairros próximos a rios ou córregos e/ou em casas contíguas a áreas de vegetação nativa. Pela primeira vez, o "Immunoblot" foi empregado no diagnóstico de dirofilariose canina no Brasil.

The present research focused on studying, through blood and sorology tests, epidemiological aspects of canine dirofilariasis in the metropolitan area of the city of Cuiabá, Brazil. Blood samples from 822 dogs were tested. The research detected, through "Immunoblot" test, antibodies against adult Dirofilaria immitis antigens in 11.81% of the samples, while 0.41% of the dogs presented, through the modified Knott test, microfilariae of D. immitis. The prevalence of canine dirofilariasis in Cuiabá, in the period between June and November 1977, reached 120.8 case per 1,000 dogs. The "Immunoblot" diagnosed as positive 11.27% of the samples previously tested negative when using the modified Knott test. The research statistically analyzed information on the dogs’ breed, sex, age and region of origin. It also took into account the possibility that the dogs researched might have traveled to endemic regions, might have been given microfilaricides or might be presenting a compatible symptomatology. The environmental characteristics of the dogs’ dwelling places were also studied. Dogs from one to nine years old, living in the Center-West region of Cuiabá, were statistically found to be the most affected. The majority of them has not been treated with microfilaricide, and has never left the Cuiabá metropolitan area. They lived, however, in neighborhoods close to streams and/or in houses adjacent to native vegetation. This research was the first time that "Immunoblot" was used for the diagnosis of canine dirofilariasis in Brazil.

A fim de determinar a ocorrência de Dirofilaria immitis em cães da cidade de Cuiabá e adjacências, foram utilizadas 500 amostras de sangue de cães de qualquer raça e ambos os sexo e com idade superior a seis meses, as quais foram coletadas em domicílio ou durante campanhas de vacinação anti-rábica, realizadas pelo Centro de Controle de Zoonoses de Cuiabá, por equipe de professores e alunos da Faculdade de Agronomia e Medicina Veterinária da UFMT, no período de setembro de 1995 a janeiro de 1997. A técnica utilizada para a pesquisa das microfilárias circulantes foi a de KNOTT modificada (Newton; Wright, 1956). Dentre as 500 amostras examinadas, foram encontradas microfilárias de D. immitis em 29 (5,8%) e de Dipetalonema reconditum em três (0,6%). Estes relatos de dirofilariose canina na região da Grande Cuiabá constituíram-se em estudo preliminar para que, numa segunda fase, possa ser determinada a prevalência da doença, mediante imunodiagnóstico.

In order to determine the occurrence of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs in Greater Cuiabá and environs, 500 samples of blood of dogs of any breed and both sexes, with ages over six months, have been collected in houses or during anti-rabic vaccination campaigns carried out by the Centro de Controle de Zoonoses and by the team of professors and students of Faculdade de Agronomia e Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, from September 1995 to January 1997. The technique used in the circulating microfilariae research was KNOTT modified (Newton; Wright, 1956). From the 500 samples examined, 29 (5.8%) presented D. immitis microfilariae and three (0.6%) of Dipetalonema reconditum. These accounts of the occurrence of canine dirofilariosis in greater Cuiabá show the results of a preliminary study, which will lead to further studies so as to determine the prevalence of canine heartworm disease, by means of immunediagnosis.

Iniciou-se um estudo sobre a ocorrência de leishmaniose visceral e tegumentar em cães da área urbana de Cuiabá, Estado de Mato Grosso. No período de agosto de 1997 a julho de 1998, foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 800 cães, de diferentes bairros de Cuiabá, escolhidos aleatoriamente, e remetidos ao Serviço de Parasitologia do Instituto Municipal de Medicina Veterinária Jorge Vaitsman, no Rio de Janeiro, para exame pelo teste de imunofluorescência indireta. Foram processadas preliminarmente 62 amostras de soro, das quais 64,5% (40 amostras) estavam positivas para leishmaniose. Quanto às titulações encontradas nos soros reagentes, 92,5% (37 amostras) apresentaram títulos acima de 1:160, sugerindo forte suspeita da presença de leishmaniose visceral. Deste total, 72,5% (29 amostras) dos soros positivos são provenientes de cães da região Sul-Leste e 27,5% (11 amostras) da região Centro-Leste de Cuiabá. Este é o primeiro registro da detecção de cães sorologicamente positivos para leishmaniose em área urbana do Estado de Mato Grosso.

An investigation was carried out to determine the occurrence of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in the urban canine population of the District of Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso. In the period from August of 1997 to July of 1998 blood samples of 800 dogs were collected, from different neighborhoods of Cuiabá, chosen at random and sent to the Service of Parasitology of the Municipal Institute of Veterinary Medicine Jorge Vaitsman, in Rio de Janeiro, for examination by the indirect immunofluorescent test. At the beginning 62 serum samples were processed, from which 64.5% (40 samples) were positive for leishmaniasis. In relation to the titters found in the reacting serum, 92.5% (37 samples) presented titters above 1:160, what suggests strong suspicion of the presence of visceral leishmaniasis. From this total, 72.5% (29 samples) of the positive serum came from dogs of the South-East region and 27.5% (11 samples) of the Center-East region of Cuiabá. This is the first report of the detection of serum positive dogs for leishmaniasis in urban area of the State of Mato Grosso.

An artificial feeding system was used where citrated bovine blood was offerred to male and female Amblyomma cajennense. Vestiges of blood, sweat, hair and exfoliated skin were used as phago-stimulants placed on the surface of the silicone membrane. The ticks were collected, as engorged nymphs, from naturally infested equines, with the ecdysis occurring in the laboratory. Four hundred ticks were used, 50% being female, at three to four weeks post-ecdysis. Vestiges of blood on the silicone membrane were the most efficient phago-stimulant and the association of vestiges of blood and sweat residue smears yielded better results compared to the other phago-stimulants used
