The economical assessment is a frame for the assignment of economical resources in a context of limited resources and demand increase. It plays a key role in the decisionmaking process. For this reason, the aim of this work is evaluating the usage of the economical assessment in the Cuban health system.

La Evaluación Económica representa un marco para la asignación de recursos sanitarios en un contexto de recursos limitados e incremento de la demanda. Tiene un papel clave en el proceso de toma de decisiones. Es por esta razón que el objetivo de este trabajo consiste en valorar el uso de las evaluaciones económicas en el sistema de salud cubano.

Introduction: causal agents of the main human myicoses have been preserved in the culture collection of pathogenic fungi at "Pedro KourÍ" Tropical Medicine Institute, a national reference center, with the purpose of using them for medical microbiology diagnoses, research and teaching. Preservation of fungal cultures in sterile distilled water, or Castellani's method, has been endorsed as a method ensuring high rates of strain viability, purity and stability, low costs and great simplicity. It is therefore an advantageous alternative for the maintenance of microorganisms in many laboratories. Objective: present the results obtained from the preservation in sterile distilled water of the main fungal species included in the collection. Methods: an evaluation was conducted of the viability, purity and stability of the main morphological and physiological characteristics of 240 strains of different fungal species from the collection, which had been preserved in sterile distilled water. Results: 80 % of the cultures had retained their viable status without any contamination. The best results corresponded to the preservation of fungi producing abundant conidia (97 % recovery) and yeasts (83 %), followed by dermatophytes (69 %) and dimorphic fungi (68 %). In 8 genera, recovery of viable strains was 100 %, and in 17 it was above 60%. Preservation time was 15-20 years. A web-based digital database was created for the collection. Conclusions: Castellani's is the method of choice for the preservation of fungal cultures in resource-limited laboratories.

Introducción: en la colección de cultivos de hongos patógenos del Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Pedro Kourí", como centro de referencia nacional, se conservan los agentes causales de las principales micosis humanas, con fines de diagnóstico, investigaciones y enseñanza de la microbiología médica. La conservación de cultivos fúngicos en agua destilada estéril o método de Castellani ha sido avalada como un método que garantiza porcentajes elevados de viabilidad, pureza y estabilidad de las cepas; esto unido a su bajo costo y sencillez, la convierte en una alternativa ventajosa para el mantenimiento de los microorganismos en muchos laboratorios. Objetivo: mostrar los resultados en la preservación en agua destilada estéril de las principales especies fúngicas que integran esta colección. Métodos: se evaluó la viabilidad, pureza y estabilidad de las principales características morfológicas y fisiológicas de 240 cepas de diferentes especies fúngicas pertenecientes a la colección, conservadas en agua destilada estéril. Resultados: de los cultivos, 80 % se conservó en estado viable y sin contaminaciones. Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron en la preservación de los hongos productores de abundantes conidios (97 % de recuperación) y las levaduras (83 %), mientras que con los dermatofitos y hongos dimórficos fue de 69 y 68 %, respectivamente. En 17 géneros, la recuperación de cepas viables fue superior a 60 %, mientras que en 8 resultó de 100 %. El tiempo de conservación fue de 15 a 20 años. Se implementó una base de datos en formato digital de la colección sobre plataforma web. Conclusiones: el método de Castellani es un método de elección para la conservación de cultivos fúngicos en laboratorios de recursos limitados.

In the Region of the Americas the emerging and reemerging infectious diseases that had the greatest impact on health, in terms of their incidence and the number of deaths that they caused during the five-year period of 19992003, were: malaria, yellow fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, AIDS, anthrax, and SARS, as well as infection by hantavirus and by West Nile virus. The appearance of epidemics of emerging and reemerging diseases is related to biological, social, and economic factors. Growth in international trade, the movement of large numbers of people across national borders, the variability and genetic adaptability of the causative microorganisms, and inefficiencies in public health systems help to spread infections and epidemics. To avoid or reduce the serious effects of these epidemics, countries should give priority in their national agendas to surveillance of emerging and reemerging diseases and should implement a set of measures to combat the diseases. The most important of these measures is to develop a strategy that is based on early warning and rapid response mechanisms, with personnel and laboratories as well as communications networks that link laboratories with health service providers. This strategy should be backed by priority funding and adequate policies.

This paper was based on the literature published in different databases as Medline, IPA, Cancerlit and Oncolik during 21 years, from 1881 to 2002. The databases of patents were also used. The analysis of the retrieved information showed that the institution with the highest activity in the research of natural products to treat cancer is the National Cancer Institute of the United States and that apparently you cannot talk about a strong research in the underdeveloped countries. A table with 10 medicinal plants that are being researched now by different sources, institutions and interests, is included. An analysis is made on the prospect of biodiversity and copyright.

El siguiente trabajo fue realizado a partir de la literatura publicada en diferentes bases de datos como son Medline, IPA, Cancerlit y Oncolik en un período de 21 años; desde 1981 hasta 2002. Se utilizaron, además, las bases de datos de patentes. El análisis de la información recuperada arrojó que la institución que mayor actividad realiza en torno a la investigación de productos naturales para el tratamiento del cáncer, es el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer de los Estados Unidos y que al parecer no se puede hablar de una investigación fuerte en los países subdesarrollados. Se muestra una tabla con una relación de 10 plantas medicinales que en estos momentos son objeto de investigación por diversas fuentes instituciones e intereses. Se presenta un análisis sobre la perspectiva de la biodiversidad y los derechos de propiedad intelectual.

The homeopathic drugs are prepared from products of the 3 kingdoms of nature. Homeopathy is a system with its own laws, principles and drugs. The main homeopathic law is "Similia similibus curentur", enunciated by Hippocrates and retaken and developed by Samuel F. C. Hahnemann, its founder. Obviously, there is a great number of forms of cancer and each of them has its inherent characteristics and demands an appropiate care; therefore, we cannot talk about a general specific treatment for all forms of cancer. Next, we suggest to analyze the international trends existing in the use of homeopathy for treating some types of cancer.

Los medicamentos homeopáticos son preparados a partir de productos de los 3 reinos de la naturaleza. La homeopatía es un sistema con leyes, principios y medicamentos propios. La principal ley homeopática es "Similia similibus curentur", enunciada por Hipócrates y retomada y desarrollada por Samuel F.C. Hahnemann, su fundador. Evidentemente, existe un sinnúmero de formas de cáncer y cada una tiene sus características propias y exige sus cuidados adecuados, por consiguiente, no se puede hablar de un tratamiento específico, general, para todas las formas de cáncer. A continuación se propone analizar las tendencias internacionales en el uso de la homeopatía para el tratamiento de algunos tipos de cáncer.

Towards a New Approach in the Information Services of Environmental Health in Cuba An assesment about information services in environmental health existing in the National System of Information on Medical Sciences in Cuba is provided. The technical and information resources that support these services and, in particular, CD-ROM databases are described. It is outlined the importance of studying information needs as a basis for the user/service interaction focusing on problems that affect the environment and the environmental health in general. These problems generate significant information needs that requiere immediate attention. It is noted the Cuban collaboration role with the Panamerican Information Network in Environmental Health and in the information assurance of users from the country. Finally, the relevance of direct access to INTERNET is stated as well as the role played by information professionals in assimilating and/or using the existing information potential and new technologies.

Se ofrece una valoración sobre los servicios informativos en salud ambiental existentes en el Sistema Nacional de Información de Ciencias Médicas de Cuba. Se describen los recursos técnicos e informativos que soportan estos servicios y, en particular, las bases de datos en CD-ROM. Se señala la importancia del estudio de necesidades informativas como base para la interacción usuario-servicio con énfasis en los problemas que afectan al medio y a la salud ambiental en general, los cuales generan importantes necesidades informativas que requieren una atención priorizada. Se destaca el papel que desempeña la colaboración cubana con la Red Panamericana de Información en Salud Ambiental en el aseguramiento informativo de los usuarios del país. Finalmente, se constata la relevancia del acceso directo a INTERNET, así como el papel de los profesionales de la información en la asimilación y/o utilización del potencial informativo existente y de las nuevas tecnologías en general.
