Abstract Gynandromorphs are individuals that display both male and female features throughout the body and are rarely found in nature. We document and describe two new gynandromorphs of the large carpenter bee Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) augusti reared from a trap-nest in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In addition, based on a literature review, we assessed the frequency of the different types of gynandromorphs, and the body part affected, among large carpenter bees. Both gynandromorphs were assigned to the mixed category, the most common category reported in the literature (22 of 25 specimens). The remaining three specimens exhibit a bilateral pattern in all tagmata. The presence of both sexes’ secondary sexual characteristics occurred more frequently on the mesosoma than on the head or metasoma. Trap nests used in bee hotels promote the conservation and study of wild bees and might facilitate the discovery of rare cases of gynandromorphs that would remain unknown otherwise under normal nesting conditions in the wild.

OBJECTIVES: This observational, cross-sectional study based aimed to test whether heart failure (HF)-disease management program (DMP) components are influencing care and clinical decision-making in Brazil. METHODS: The survey respondents were cardiologists recommended by experts in the field and invited to participate in the survey via printed form or email. The survey consisted of 29 questions addressing site demographics, public versus private infrastructure, HF baseline data of patients, clinical management of HF, performance indicators, and perceptions about HF treatment. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 98 centers (58% public and 42% private practice) distributed across Brazil. Public HF-DMPs compared to private HF-DMP were associated with a higher percentage of HF-DMP-dedicated services (79% vs 24%; OR: 12, 95% CI: 94-34), multidisciplinary HF (MHF)-DMP [84% vs 65%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-8), HF educational programs (49% vs 18%; OR: 4; 95% CI: 1-2), written instructions before hospital discharge (83% vs 76%; OR: 1; 95% CI: 0-5), rehabilitation (69% vs 39%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), monitoring (44% vs 29%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-5), guideline-directed medical therapy-HF use (94% vs 85%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15), and less B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) dosage (73% vs 88%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), and key performance indicators (37% vs 60%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-7). In comparison to non- MHF-DMP, MHF-DMP was associated with more educational initiatives (42% vs 6%; OR: 12; 95% CI: 1-97), written instructions (83% vs 68%; OR: 2: 95% CI: 1-7), rehabilitation (69% vs 17%; OR: 11; 95% CI: 3-44), monitoring (47% vs 6%; OR: 14; 95% CI: 2-115), GDMT-HF (92% vs 83%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15). In addition, there were less use of BNP as a biomarker (70% vs 84%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-8) and key performance indicators (35% vs 51%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 91,6) in the non-MHF group. Physicians considered changing or introducing new medications mostly when patients were hospitalized or when observing worsening disease and/or symptoms. Adherence to drug treatment and non-drug treatment factors were the greatest medical problems associated with HF treatment. CONCLUSION: HF-DMPs are highly heterogeneous. New strategies for HF care should consider the present study highlights and clinical decision-making processes to improve HF patient care.

Cerca de um terço dos adultos na maioria das comunidades tem hipertensão arterial (HTA). Na Argentina, os registros mostram uma prevalência de 33,5%; onde 44,6% são homens e 25,9% são mulheres. Estima-se que um terço da população com HTA desconhece que a sofre e metade está em tratamento anti-hipertensivo; mas apenas um quarto está bem controlado. Por outro lado, a epidemia de insuficiência cardíaca (IC) atinge cerca de 61 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, e está intimamente relacionada à hipertensão, sendo esta a principal etiologia, principalmente na Europa e nos Estados Unidos. Daqui surge o vínculo entre as duas entidades, já bastante conhecidas e com medicamentos há muito endossados para o seu tratamento. Tanto a HTA quanto a HF (seja com fração de ejeção preservada ou reduzida) são patologias altamente vinculadas e prevalentes em todas as comunidades. Os últimos avanços nas pesquisas nos levam a considerar que quanto maior a redução dos valores da pressão arterial, gera-se uma cascata de mecanismos benéficos para o sistema cardiovascular que levam a francos benefícios clínicos. Agora, ¿existem novas terapias que podem orientar o curso desses pacientes ou existem apenas alvos novos e mais rígidos com medicamentos que conhecíamos anteriormente?

About a third of adults in most communities have high blood pressure (HBP). In Argentina the records show a prevalence of 33.5%; where 44.6% are men and 25.9% are women. It is estimated that a third of the population with HBP is unaware that they suffer from it and half are under antihypertensive treatment; but only a quarter is well controlled. On the other hand, the epidemic of heart failure (HF) reaches approximately 61 million individuals worldwide, and is closely related to hypertension, this being the main etiology, especially in Europe and the United States. From here arises the link between both entities, already well known and with drugs endorsed for their treatment for a long time. Both HBP and HF (whether with preserved or reduced ejection fraction) are highly linked and prevalent pathologies in all communities. The latest advances in research lead us to consider that the greater the reduction in blood pressure values, a cascade of beneficial mechanisms for the cardiovascular system are generated that lead to frank clinical benefits. Now, are there new therapies that can guide the course of these patients or are there only new and stricter objectives with the drugs that we previously knew?

Alrededor de un tercio de los adultos en la mayoría de las comunidades presentan hipertensión arterial (HTA). En Argentina, los registros denotan una prevalencia del 33,5%; donde el 44,6% son hombres y el 25,9% son mujeres. Se estima que un tercio de la población con HTA desconoce que la padece y la mitad se encuentra bajo tratamiento antihipertensivo; pero sólo la cuarta parte está bien controlada. Por otro lado la epidemia de insuficiencia cardíaca (IC) alcanza aproximadamente los 61 millones de individuos a nivel mundial, y se encuentra estrechamente relacionada con la HTA, siendo ésta la principal etiología sobre todo en Europa y Estados Unidos. De aquí surge el vínculo entre ambas entidades, ya muy conocidas y con fármacos avalados para su tratamiento hace ya mucho tiempo. Tanto la HTA como la IC (sea con fracción de eyección preservada o reducida) son patologías muy vinculadas y prevalentes en todas las comunidades. Los últimos avances en investigación nos llevan a plantearnos que a mayor reducción de los valores de presión arterial, se generan una cascada de mecanismos beneficiosos para el sistema cardiovascular que conllevan beneficios clínicos francos. Ahora bien, ¿existen nuevas terapéuticas que puedan encausar el rumbo de estos pacientes o sólo existen nuevos y más estrictos objetivos con los fármacos que previamente conocíamos?

El conópido Physocephala inhabilis (Walker) es registrado como parasitoide de la abeja nativa Megachile (Sayapis) bomplandensis (Durante). También se reporta el hallazgo de una especie sin identificar del género Physocephala parasitando a Megachile (Chrysosarus) sp. en Argentina.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess clinical outcomes of intolerant, relapsed or refractory patients who could not be treated with new tyrosine kinase inhibitors or experimental therapies. Methods: A retrospective cohort of 90 chronic myeloid leukemia patients in all phases of the disease treated with imatinib mesylate as their first TKI therapy, and with dasatinib or nilotinib as the next line of therapy. We evaluated clinical outcomes of these patients, with special focus on the group that needed more than two therapy lines. Results: Thirty-nine percent of patients were refractory or intolerant to imatinib. An 8-year overall survival rate of the patients who went through three or more lines of treatment was significantly lower, compared to those who were able to maintain imatinib as their first-line therapy (83% and 22%, respectively p < 0.01). Decreased overall survival was associated with advanced-phase disease (p < 0.01), failure to achieve major molecular response in first-line treatment (p < 0.01) and interruption of first-line treatment due to any reason (p = 0.023). Failure in achieving complete cytogenetic response and major molecular response and treatment interruption were associated with the progression to the third-line treatment. Conclusion: The critical outcome observed in relapsed, intolerant or refractory chronic phase CML patients reflects the unmet need for this group of patients without an alternative therapy, such as new drugs or experimental therapies in clinical trials. Broader access to newer treatment possibilities is a crucial asset to improve survival among CML patients, especially those refractory or intolerant to first-line therapies.

Abstract Here we provide descriptions of gynandromorphs of two species oil-collecting bees: Lophopedia nigrispinis and Epicharis iheringii, both with partial bilateral phenotypic asymmetry. The bees have a female phenotype predominantly on mesosoma and metasoma. The specimen of L. nigrispinis has distinct characteristics on legs, suggesting a mosaic pattern of gynandromorphism. The pollen and oil loads on legs suggest that the bee was foraging normally. The gynander specimen of E. iheringii has mostly a female phenotype, except for head, with right half female type and left half male type. The specimen of L. nigrispinis was collected foraging on flowers of Bidens sp. at Parque Nacional Iguazú, Argentina with loads of pollen on legs suggesting it was reproductive and was provisioning a nest. The specimen of Epicharis iheriingi has no evidence of any oil or pollen collection, despite its mostly female phenotype.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar a prevalência de disfunção temporomandibular em pessoas com doença de Parkinson, em um hospital público universitário, e relacioná-los com aspectos sociodemográficos, saúde geral, saúde bucal autopercebida, estágio e tempo de doença. Métodos: utilizou-se o instrumento Critério de Diagnostico para Pesquisa em Disfunção Temporomandibular. A amostra foi estratificada de acordo com o diagnóstico de disfunção temporomandibular e associada com as variáveis. Aplicou-se para análise o odds ratio do Qui-quadrado com intervalo de confiança de 95% com nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados: foram avaliadas 110 pessoas com doença de Parkinson. A prevalência de disfunção temporomandibular foi de 35%, com maior frequência no sexo masculino (58%), em pessoas idosas (53%), no estágio 2 da doença (61%), sendo que o sinal clínico predominante foi o estalido (37%). Das variáveis analisadas, o sexo e a autopercepção de saúde bucal demonstraram estar associadas à disfunção temporomandibular. Conclusão: verificou-se a presença de disfunção temporomandibular em pessoas com doença de Parkinson, e que os fatores associados foram: ser do sexo masculino e ter autopercepção de saúde oral considerada razoável.

ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorder in people with Parkinson’s disease in a public university hospital, and relate it to sociodemographic factors, general health and oral health self-report, and phase and time of illness. Methods: the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were used. The sample was classified according to the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder and associated with the variables. The odds ratio of Chi-square was applied with a 95% confidence interval and a level of significance set at p<0.05. Results: 110 people presented with Parkinson's disease were assessed. The prevalence of temporomandibular disorder was 35%, being more frequent among males (58%), in elderly people (53%), in phase 2 of the disease (61%), click (37%) being the predominant clinical indication. Of the variables analyzed, only gender and self-perception of oral health showed to be associated with temporomandibular disorders. Conclusion: the presence of temporomandibular disorder has been observed in people with Parkinson's disease, and the fact of being male and reporting moderate oral health seen as associated factors.

RESUMEN Una especie nueva de Trigonisca es descrita para el Noroeste de Argentina, Trigonisca sachamiski sp. nov., la cual se distribuye en las provincias de Salta y Jujuy. Se presentan también mapas de distribución, notas comparativas y sinopsis de las especies de Nannotrigona y Lestrimelitta que están presentes en la Argentina. Nannotrigona melanocera y Lestrimelitta rufa son reportadas por primera vez para la Argentina y se presenta una clave para reconocer las cuatro especies registradas en la Argentina de Lestrimelitta.

ABSTRACT A new species of Trigonisca is described for northwestern Argentina, Trigonisca sachamiski sp. nov., of Salta and Jujuy provinces. Distribution maps, comparative notes and a synopsis of Nannotrigona and Lestrimelitta present in Argentina are also given. Nannotrigona melanocera and Lestrimelitta rufa are reported for the first time in Argentina and key is provided to four Argentinian species of Lestrimelitta.

Sendo assim, o presente estudo objetivou analisar os possíveis fatores associados à disfunção temporomandibular e verificar a frequência da disfunção nessa população. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo de corte transversal, no qual os participantes foram avaliados com o Critério de Diagnóstico para pesquisa em disfunção temporomandibular, utilizado para classificar a disfunção temporomandibular e obter, através do exame físico e autorrelato, as variáveis estudadas. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliadas 139 pessoas com doença de Parkinson. Dessas, 77 encontraram-se dentro dos critérios de elegibilidade, sendo que 70% da amostra era do sexo masculino, com média de idade de 62±9 anos, tempo de diagnóstico da doença de Parkinson de 6±4 anos e com 71% da amostra no estágio moderado. Não foram encontradas associações significativas entre a idade, sexo, tempo e estágio da doença com a disfunção temporomandibular. Das variáveis analisadas, os resultados significativos mostraram que a presença de dor (OR=10,92; IC95%=2,25-59,93; p<0,001) representa uma maior chance de desenvolver a disfunção temporomandibular, a crepitação (Kappa=0,34; p<0,004) reflete uma precisão moderada na classificação do transtorno da articulação temporomandibular e o estalido (valor preditivo negativo=77%; p<0,032) aumenta a probabilidade de ter a disfunção temporomandibular. CONCLUSÃO: Neste estudo, a frequência de disfunção temporomandibular foi de 30% e verificou-se que os fatores associados à disfunção em pessoas com doença de Parkinson foram dor, estalido e crepitação.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Parkinson’s disease leads to mandibular movements that affect the masticatory cycle and induce orofacial pain, one of the main clinical alterations found in temporomandibular dysfunction. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the possible factors associated with temporomandibular dysfunction and to verify the frequency of the dysfunction in this population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which the participants were evaluated using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Dysfunction research, used to classify the temporomandibular dysfunction and to obtain by physical examination and self-report the variables studied. RESULTS: A total of 139 people with Parkinson’s disease were evaluated. Of these, 77 met the eligibility criteria, with 70% of the sample being male, with an average age of 62±9 years; Parkinson’s disease diagnosis time of 6±4 years and with 71% of the sample in the moderate stage of Parkinson’s disease. No significant associations were found between age, gender, time and stage of the disease with temporomandibular dysfunction. Of the variables analyzed, the significant results showed that the presence of pain (OR=10.92, 95% CI=2.25-59.93, p<0.001) has a greater chance of developing temporomandibular dysfunction, crepitation (Kappa=0.34, p<0.004) reflects moderate accuracy in the classification of temporomandibular joint disorder and the click (negative predictive value=77%, p<0.032) increases the probability of having temporomandibular dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Therefore, in this study, the frequency of the temporomandibular dysfunction was 30%, and it was observed that the factors associated with the dysfunction in people with Parkinson’s disease were: pain, click, and crackle.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Immune response to vaccination in infants born prematurely may be lower than in infants born at full-term. Some clinical factors might be associated with humoral immune response. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the immune response to measles and varicella vaccination in infants born prematurely with those born at full-term and to analyze factors associated with measles and varicella antibody levels. Methods: Prospective study including two groups of infants aged 12 months. One group of infants born prematurely with birth-weight <1500 g and who were in follow-up at the outpatient clinic for preterm infants at the institution and other group of infants born at full-term. Infants with malformations, primary immunodeficiency diseases, born to HIV-positive mothers or who had received plasma or immunoglobulin transfusions five months before or three weeks after vaccination were excluded. Plasma antibodies were measured by ELISA and factors associated with antibody levels were assessed by linear regression. Results: Sixty-five premature and 56 full-term infants were included. The percentage of immune individuals after vaccination against measles (100% vs. 100%) and varicella (92.5% vs. 93.2%) were similar in both groups, as well as the antibody levels against measles (2.393 vs. 2.412 UI/mL; p = 0.970) and varicella (0.551 vs. 0.399 UI/mL; p = 0.114). Use of antenatal corticosteroids decreased measles antibody levels whereas breastfeeding for more than six months increased varicella antibody levels. Conclusions: Humoral responses to measles and varicella were similar between infants born prematurely and full-term infants. Measles antibody levels were negatively associated with antenatal corticosteroid use; varicella antibodies were positively associated with prolonged breastfeeding.

Resumo Objetivos Avaliar a preferência de mulheres e homens emrelação à depilação genital feminina, e identificar possíveis razões envolvidas nessa preferência. Método Estudo transversal em que homens e mulheres com mais de 18 anos foram convidados por meio do blog oficial de nossa instituição a responder anonimamente a um formulário on-line e autoadministrado de autoria dos pesquisadores. As análises foram realizadas no programa Statistical Analysis System (SAS, SAS Inc., Cary, Carolina do Norte, EUA), versão 9.3, e tabelas de contingência foram construídas para verificar a distribuição entre as variáveis. A análise estatística univariada foi realizada com o teste qui-quadrado de Pearson, e foram consideradas significativas as diferenças para p < 0,05. Resultados Foram obtidos dados de 69.920 indivíduos (52.787 mulheres e 17.133 homens). A idade média dos indivíduos foi de 31,9 anos entre os homens, e de 28,5 entre as mulheres. A maioria das mulheres (64,3%) e dos homens (62,2%) preferiram a genitália feminina completamente depilada, e essa preferência foi mais pronunciada em mulheres e homens mais jovens. A maioria das mulheres afirmaram se depilar em casa (55,8%), e 44,4% delas usam cera quente, e 40,1% utilizam lâmina de barbear. Quase metade das mulheres (44,7%) e metade dos homens (50,1%) alegaram ter frequência sexual de 2 a 3 vezes por semana. A frequência sexual das mulheres e a satisfação com sua própria genitália foram positivamente relacionadas com a preferência pela remoção total dos pelos pubianos. Conclusões A maioria das mulheres e dos homens brasileiros preferem a remoção completa dos pelos genitais femininos, o que é ainda mais pronunciado nos indivíduos mais jovens e sexualmente ativos. As mulheres satisfeitas com a aparência de sua própria genitália tendem a preferir a remoção completa dos pelos pubianos.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the preferences of women and men regarding female pubic hair depilation and identify possible reasons for these preferences. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of men and women over 18 years old who were invited by the official blog of our institution to respond anonymously to an online and self-administered questionnairemade by the researchers. The analyses weremade using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS, SAS Inc., Cary, NC, US) software, version 9.3, and contingency tables were used to verify the distribution of variables. The univariate statistical analysis was performed using the Pearson chi-squared test, and the differences for values of p < 0.05 were considered significant. Results We obtained data from 69,920 subjects (52,787 women and 17,133 men). Themean age was 31.9 years formen, and 28.5 years for women. Most women (64.3%) and men (62.2%) preferred complete removal of female pubic hair, and this preference wasmore pronounced in younger women andmen. Most women reported performing depilation at home (55.8%), with 44.4% using hot wax and 40.1% using a razor blade. About half of the women (44.7%) and men (50.1%) reported sexual activity, having intercourse 2 to 3 times per week. The frequency of intercourse and sexual satisfaction in women correlated with total pubic hair removal. Conclusion Most Brazilian women and men prefer the complete removal of female pubic hair, especially those who are younger andmore sexually active.Women who are satisfied with the appearance of their own genitalia have a stronger preference for complete removal of pubic hair.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Understanding the diversity of sand flies is important for the epidemiology and control of leishmaniasis. This study aimed to understand the frequency, diversity, and seasonality of medically important sand flies in the municipality of Sinop, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. METHODS: The study was conducted in an urban area, including four ecotypes with different levels of urbanization. The sand flies were collected using light traps for three nights per month, from May 2014 to April 2015. RESULTS: A total of 62,745 sand flies was collected, 52.34% of which were female. The frequency and diversity of sand flies was the highest in areas of permanent preservation (APPs) (96.85%), and was lower in more urbanized areas. Lutzomyia dasypodogeton was the most frequent species in the APPs. Lutzomyia antunesi was the most frequent in neighborhoods with forest fragments and neighborhoods around APPs, and L. aragaoi was the most frequent in completely urbanized neighborhoods. A higher frequency and diversity of sand flies was observed in the rainy season (87.92%) than in the dry season (12.08%). Eight medically important species were captured, and Lutzomyia antunesi, which is associated with American cutaneous leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis, was observed in all ecotypes throughout the year. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a high frequency and diversity of sand flies in all urban areas, and some species collected were major vectors of leishmaniasis. These results support the need for further studies of the natural rates of infection of these insects and the circulation of the disease in hosts and vectors.
