RESUMO: O quati (Nasua nasua, Linnaeus 1766) é uma espécie generalista que alimenta-se de comida humana frequentemente descartada em lixeiras ao redor de locais de turismo ecológico. Investigou-se o peso corporal e algumas variáveis da química sanguínea relacionadas à dieta de quatis selvagens de três parques: Parque Municipal das Mangabeiras (PM), Parque Nacional do Caparaó (PNC) e Estação Ecológica Água Limpa (EEAL). Testou-se o plasma de 75 quatis para lipoprotequatis sitaabeiras (PM), Parque Nacional do Caparaó (PNC) aspartato transaminase (AST), gama-glutamil transferase (GGT), colesterol (Chol), triglicerídeos (Trig) e fosfatase alcalina (ALP). Machos e fêmeas adultos não diferiram significativamente quanto a peso (P > 0,05) e índices de química sanguínea (P > 0,05). Os quatis adultos do PM foram mais pesados em relação aos quatis adultos dos outros dois parques. Houve diferenças significativas em HDL (P < 0,04), AST (P < 0,001), ALT (P < 0,001) e GGT (P < 0,001) entre os adultos dos três parques. Apenas ALT e ALP foram significativamente diferentes (P < 0,05) entre os quatis jovens. Os resultados sugerem que os quatis dos três parques apresentam diferentes estados de saúde. O consumo de alimentos humanos descartados parece afetar o peso corporal dos quatis do PM. Os quatis do PNC e da EEAL apresentaram perfis químicos sanguíneos sugestivos de doença hepática. Recomendamos a realização de programas de educação ambiental aos visitantes e investigações clínicas adicionais nos quatis desses parques.

ABSTRACT: The coati (Nasua nasua, Linnaeus 1766) is a generalist species, feeding on often-discarded human food in dumpsters around ecological tourism sites. We investigated the body weight and some blood chemistry variables related to the diet of wild coatis from three parks: Parque Municipal das Mangabeiras (PM), Parque Nacional do Caparaó (PNC) e Estação Ecológica Água Limpa (EEAL). We tested the plasma of 53 coatis for high-density lipoprotein (HDL), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), cholesterol (Chol), triglycerides (Trig), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Male and female adults did not significantly differ on the weight (P > 0.05) and blood chemistry indexes (P > 0.05). The adult coatis of the PM were heavier than the adult coatis of the other two parks. There were significant differences in HDL (P < 0.04), AST (P < 0.001), ALT (P < 0.001), and GGT (P < 0.001) between adults of the three parks. Only ALT and ALP were significantly different (P < 0.05) among the young coatis. The results suggested the coatis of the three parks have different health status. The consumption of discarded human food seems to affect body weight of the PM coatis. The coatis from PNC and EEAL had blood chemistry profiles suggestive of liver disorder. We recommend carrying on environmental education programs to visitors and additional clinical investigations on coatis from these parks.

RESUMO: Em parques ecológicos, a proximidade com atividades turísticas facilita a exploração do lixo por quatis (Nasua nasua), com possíveis consequências graves para saúde dos animais. Descrevemos o conteúdo de fezes de quatis selvagens de três parques ecológicos. Após análise de 62 amostras, fragmentos de plantas e animais foram identificados em todas as fezes. Nas fezes de dois parques, as sementes estiveram presentes entre 36,4% e 48,6% das amostras. Foram identificados fragmentos de artrópodes em 100% das amostras de dois parques, mas apenas 87,3% em um terceiro parque. Escamas, ossos ou penas de pássaros estavam presentes em algumas amostras. Detectou-se material não digerido de origem industrial em 34,3% a 54,5% das amostras, como fragmentos de papel, barbante, plástico, alumínio, látex e vidro. Os resultados estão de acordo com outros estudos sobre a dieta de quatis selvagens, mas a ingestão de corpos estranhos, potencialmente prejudicial à saúde, é descrito pela primeira vez. Os problemas clínicos decorrentes da ingestão de lixo podem ser fraturas dentais, erosões de mucosas, perfuração intestinal, peritonite, impactação, diarreia, emagrecimento, intoxicação e infecções. Os quatis nos três parques estão com a saúde em risco, sendo necessárias ações para evitar problemas clínicos e potencialmente fatais. Quatro ações são recomendadas para evitar a ingestão de corpos estranhos: aumentar a educação ambiental dos visitantes; melhorar o armazenamento dos resíduos gerados nos parques; monitorar periodicamente a saúde dos quatis, de forma a fazer intervenções quando possível; fazer um programa permanente de estudo da ecologia das espécies nos três parques.

ABSTRACT: In ecological parks, the proximity to tourist activities facilitates the exploration of garbage by coatis, with possible serious consequences for the animals health . We described the contents of wild coatis feces from three ecological parks. After analyzing 62 samples, fragments of plants and animals were identified in all feces. In the feces of two parks, seeds were present between 36.4% and 48.6% of the samples. Arthropod fragments were identified in 100% of the samples from two parks, but only 87.3% in a third park. Scales, bones or bird feathers were present in some samples. Undigested material of industrial origin was detected in 34.3% to 54.5% of the samples, such as fragments of paper, string, plastic, aluminum, latex and glass. Results are in line with other studies on the diet of wild coatis, but the intake of foreign bodies, potentially harmful to health, is described for the first time. Clinical problems resulting from ingesting waste can be dental fractures, mucosal erosions, intestinal perforation, peritonitis, impaction, diarrhea, weight loss, intoxication and infections. Coatis in the three parks are at risk of health, and actions are needed to avoid clinical and potentially fatal problems. Four actions are recommended to avoid ingesting foreign bodies: increasing the environmental education of visitors; improving the storage of waste generated in parks; periodically monitor the health of coatis, in order to make interventions when possible; make a permanent program to study the ecology of species in the three parks.

RESUMO O estudo objetivou aplicar técnicas de nucleação para restauração de uma área dominada por P. aquilinum no Parque do Caparaó. Na área ocupada por P. aquilinum, abriram-se sessenta núcleos de 2 x 2 m, sendo dez núcleos para cada tratamento avaliado. Nestas áreas abertas, toda a cobertura de P. aquilinum foi removida até atingir o solo. No centro de cada clareira foi delimitado uma parcela de 1 x 1 m, em que foram aplicados os tratamentos: T1-calagem, T2-Transposição do banco de sementes e serapilheira, T3-semeadura direta, T4-calagem + transposição do banco de sementes e serapilheira, T5-calagem + semeadura direta, T6-Testemunha. Adotou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 10 repetições por tratamento. Em cada parcela da nucleação, após um ano, registraram-se todos os indivíduos arbustivo-arbóreos, medidos em altura e diâmetro ao nível do solo. As plantas foram classificadas quanto à classe sucessional e a síndrome de dispersão. Após um ano da implantação do experimento de nucleação, foram registrados 331 indivíduos arbustivo-arbóreos pertencentes a 19 espécies, 12 gêneros e dez famílias botânicas. Predominou o grupo ecológico das pioneiras e a síndrome de dispersão zoocórica. As famílias com maior riqueza foram Solanaceae e Euphorbiaceae. Solanaceae também se destacou com maior número de indivíduos (56,2%), seguida de Fabaceae (10%). O gênero Solanum apresentou maior riqueza e abundância. As técnicas de nucleação adotadas desencadearam o processo de sucessão na área invadida por P. aquilinum. Os tratamentos com banco de sementes foram os mais indicados para facilitar o processo de regeneração florestal na área.

ABSTRACT The goal of this study was to restore an area dominated by P. aquilinum in the National Park of Caparaó, by nucleation techniques. In an area covered by P. aquilinum, 60 nuclei or gaps of 2 x 2 m were cleared, i.e., 10 nuclei per treatment. In these open areas, all P. aquilinum cover was removed down to the soil. In the center of each gap was delimited one parcel of 1 x 1 m, in which the treatments were applied: T1-liming, T2-seed bank and litter transposition, T3-direct-seeding, T4-liming + seed bank and litter transposition, T5-liming + direct-seeding, T6-control. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with 10 replications. In each nucleation plot, after one year, all arbustive-arboreous species were recorded, by measuring plant height and diameter at ground level. The plants were classified according to the succession class and dispersion type. One year after the installation of the nucleation experiment, 331 individuals of 19 species, 12 genera and 10 botanical families were recorded. Pioneer plants were the predominant ecological group, and the prevailing dispersion type was zoochoric. The richest families were Solanaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Solanaceae was represented by the highest number of individuals (56.2%), followed by Fabaceae (10%). The genus Solanum had the highest richness and abundance. The applied nucleation techniques triggered the succession process in the area invaded by P. aquilinum. Treatments with seed banks were the most appropriate to facilitate forest regeneration in this area.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a estrutura de um estande de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Submontana no Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (19º29'-19º48'S e 42º28'-42º38'W). Os indivíduos de porte arbóreo foram amostrados pelo método de quadrantes. Adotaram-se dois procedimentos distintos, dos quais um com inclusão dos indivíduos mortos e em outro não. Foram alocados 200 pontos amostrais, dispostos em 20 linhas paralelas, ao longo de uma encosta. Foram encontradas 143 espécies, pertencentes a 109 gêneros reconhecidos e 38 famílias botânicas. A análise fitossociológica demonstrou predominância das espécies Bixa arborea, Guatteria schomburgkiana, Joannesia princeps, Aparisthmium cordatum, Pseudopiptadenia contorta e Carpotroche brasiliensis. O tamanho das populações e sua distribuição pelo ambiente foram os fatores decisivos para o destaque apresentado por essas espécies, com exceção de P. contorta, que esteve representada por poucos indivíduos, contudo de grandes dimensões. As distribuições diamétricas e de alturas evidenciaram poucos indivíduos de grande porte, fato que aliado ao histórico do local, que registra um incêndio em 1967, e à baixa ocorrência de espécies associadas a ambientes climácicos, sugere que o trecho de floresta estudado encontra-se em estádio médio de sucessão secundária.

The objective of the present work was to study the structure of a stand of Submontane Semi-deciduous Forest, in Rio Doce State Park (19º29'-19º48'S e 42º28'-42º38'W). In order to sample the tree component, the point-centered-quarter method was employed according to two different protocols: in one including the dead individuals, and in the other excluding them. A total of 200 sampling points were allocated in 20 parallel lines, along a hillside. A total of 143 species, belonging to 109 recognized genera and 38 botanical families was found. The main species were Bixa arborea, Guatteria schomburgkiana, Joannesia princeps, Aparisthmium cordatum, Pseudopiptadenia contorta and Carpotroche brasiliensis. The size of the populations and their distribution throughout the environment determined the prominence of these species, with the exception of P. contorta, which was represented by few large individuals. The diameter and height distributions evidenced few individuals of great size, a fact probably linked to a history of burning a 1967. The fire history and the low occurrence of climax species suggest that the forest stand studied is in a medium stage of secondary succession.

Estudou-se um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Submontana, localizado no município de Viçosa (20º35' a 28º50'S e 42º45' a 43º00'W), no Estado de Minas Gerais. Os dados apresentados resultam de uma amostragem fitossociológica realizada em uma área de 1 hectare quadrado. Foram relacionados todos os indivíduos arbóreos que apresentavam circunferência de tronco à altura do peito maior ou igual a 15 cm, o que resultou em121 espécies, compreendendo 89 gêneros, distribuídos em 39 famílias. Considerando os gêneros, as famílias mais bem representadas foram Leguminosae (16), Rubiaceae (6) e Euphorbiaceae e Myrtaceae, com cinco cada uma. As famílias mais ricas em espécies foram Leguminosae (20), Lauraceae (10), Rubiaceae (9) e Flacourtiaceae (8). Dentre os gêneros encontrados, destacaram-se Ocotea e Casearia, com sete e cinco espécies, respectivamente. Entre os vários fragmentos analisados na região, o trecho de floresta estudado apresentou-se como o mais rico em espécies, considerando o mesmo critério de amostragem.

A fragment of Semideciduous Submontane Forest, located in Viçosa-MG (20º35' to 28º50'S and 42º45' to 43º00'W), was studied. The data presented are the result of a phytosociological analysis carried out in an area of an hectare square. All trees wich a minimum trunk circunference of 0.15 m at 1.30 m from the soil level were sampled, comprising 121 species of 89 genera, distributed over 39 families. In regards to genera, the families most represented were Leguminosae (16), Rubiaceae, (six) and Euphorbiaceae and Myrtaceae, each with five genera. In regards to number of species, the most represented were Leguminosae (20), Lauraceae (ten), Rubiaceae (nine) and Flacourtiaceae (eight). The genera Ocotea and Casearia were the most prominent, showing seven and five species, respectively. Among the several stretches studied in the same region, the one presently studied had the largest number of especies, when the same sample criterion was adopted.
