The aim of the present study was to provide new spirometry reference equations in a sample of the Brazilian population for the following parameters: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, peak of expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow at 50% (FEF50%), 75% average vital capacity (FEF25-75%), and average forced expiratory flow time (FEFT). This was a prospective study using results from chest radiographs, electrocardiograms, and questionnaires to investigate the participants' respiratory symptoms, sedentarism, and comorbidities (Charlson comorbidity index). From December 2010 to July 2014, individuals were randomly selected from various locations in the state of Rio de Janeiro. All individuals were examined by a single technician in the morning at the laboratory, and performed the spirometry with the same spirometer. Spirometry values were tabulated for the creation of three equation models: linear regression, logarithmic regression, and logarithms through a method that incorporates the lambda, median, and coefficient of variation (LMS method). Initially, 7003 individuals from both genders were contacted, and 454 were recruited. The data from the new equations were compared with one Brazilian and eight international equations, resulting in a high correlation (r>0.9). The values derived from the LMS method and linear regression were very similar (P>0.5), and both could be used to acquire the reference values for Brazilian spirometry. Data derived from the equations of this study were different from the current Brazilian equation, which could be justified by the different method used.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a conversão alimentar (CA) por meio da inferência bayesiana considerando-se análises bivariadas. Foram utilizadas diferentes espécies animais de experimentos conduzidos na Universidade Federal de Viçosa, no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. O modelo proposto mostrou ser apropriado, uma vez que possibilitou a detecção de diferenças significativas entre níveis de fatores não detectados por procedimentos frequentistas em ANOVA tradicional, principalmente em pequenas amostras. No experimento com codornas, evidenciou-se que aves cujos níveis de proteína bruta eram de 23% e 29%, respectivamente, para machos e fêmeas, apresentaram uma melhor CA, de 2,83±0,03 e 2,66±0,03, respectivamente. No experimento com frangos, no grupo sem o aditivo antibiótico, a inclusão de 0,02% de extrato de ésteres naturais foi o que promoveu a melhor CA (1,72±0,01), e, de modo geral, o uso de antibiótico e a ausência de ésteres naturais promoveram CA de 1,63±0,02. Em caprinos, verificou-se que o aleitamento, seja com leite de cabra ou de vaca, promove igualmente uma melhor CA, respectivamente, no grupo de 60 e 90 dias, de 1,29±0,14 e 1,79±0,11, sugerindo que o aleitamento seja feito até os 60 dias. Em suínos, a dieta com maior nível de energia metabolizável e aminoácidos foi a que promoveu a melhor CA (2,86±0,07), quando comparada a uma dieta com nível nutricional mais baixo. Já o uso de enzimas na dieta com menor nível energético e de aminoácidos proporcionou resultado intermediário (2,90±007). Em bovinos, observou-se que o uso de 1% de concentrado na dieta promoveria uma melhor CA estimada de 7,33±0,35 entre os Nelores e que essa promoção seria de 7,40±0,58 entre os cruzados com o uso de 2% de concentrado na dieta.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feed conversion (CA) by Bayesian inference in bivariate considering analyzes in real and simulated data. Different animal species experiments conducted at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil are used. The proposed model proved to be appropriate once it enabled the detection of significant differences between levels of factors not detected by frequentist procedures with traditional ANOVA, especially in small samples. In the experiment with quails, it became clear that the birds' brute protein levels were 23% and 29%, respectively, for males and females, which presented better CA, 2.83±0.03 and 2.66±0.03, respectively. In the experiment with chickens, the group without additive antibiotic, including 0.02% extract natural esters promoted the best CA (1.72±0.01) and in general antibiotic absence of esters natural promoted 1.63±0.02 of the CA. In goats, it has been found that feeding milk from cows or goats also promotes better CA, respectively, in groups milked up to 60 and 90 days, being 1.29±0.14 and 1.79±0.11, suggesting that suckling done until 60 days. Pigs fed the highest level of metabolizable energy and aminoacids promoted the best CA (2.86±0.07) compared to a diet with lower nutritional level. But the use of enzymes in the diet with lower energy level and amino acid provided intermediate result (2.90±007). In cattle, it was observed that the use of 1% concentrate diet, CA, promotes a better estimate of 7.33±0.35 between Nellore and this promotion would be 7.40±0.58 between the cross breeds using 2% concentrate diet.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between exposure to alcohol consumption and smoking to leisure-time physical inactivity (LTPI) and sedentary behavior (SB) in adolescents. Method: This cross-sectional study included a representative sample of high school students from public schools in Pernambuco State (Brazil) (n = 4207, 14-19 years). The data were collected using a previously validated questionnaire. The time spent watching television was used as a measure of sedentary behavior on weekdays (WKDSB) and weekend (WKESB) (> 2 hours/day = exposed to sedentary behavior). The lack of physical activity in free time was considered as leisure-time physical inactivity (LTPI). Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the association between variables, considering the results of LTPI and SB. Results: The prevalence found were INL = 38.2% (Confidence interval (CI) 95%: 36.7 - 39.7), CSS = 40.8% (CI 95%: 39.3 - 42.3) and CFS = 49.9% (CI 95%: 48.4 - 51.4). After adjustment (demographic, socioeconomic and school factors), exposure to smoking and alcohol consumption were inversely associated with LTPI. The adolescents who consumed alcohol had 27% less chance of LTPI compared to those who did not consumed alcohol. Similarly, smoker students had 28% less chance of LTPI than those who did not smoke. Regarding SB, it was found that smoker students had 28% less chance of exposure to WKESB. Conclusion: It was concluded that consumption of alcoholic beverages and smoking are inversely associated with the LTPI and WKESB, confirming findings already reported in the literature in adult studies.

Objetivo: Analisar a associação da exposição ao consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e tabagismo com inatividade física no lazer (INL) e comportamento sedentário (CS) em adolescentes. Método: Trata-se de estudo transversal com amostra representativa de estudantes do ensino médio da rede pública estadual de Pernambuco (n = 4.207, 14-19 anos). Os dados foram coletados mediante questionário previamente validado. O tempo assistindo televisão foi usado como medida do comportamento sedentário em dias de semana (CSS) e também, no final de semana (CFS) (> 2 horas/dia = "exposto") a comportamento sedentário. A falta de prática de atividade física no tempo livre como INL. Recorreu-se à regressão logística binária para análise de associação entre as variáveis, considerando-se como desfechos a INL e o CS. Resultados: As prevalências encontradas foram de INL = 38,2% (intervalo de confiança [IC] 95%: 36,7-39,7), CSS = 40,8% (IC 95%: 39,3-42,3) e CFS = 49,9% (IC 95%: 48,4-51,4). Após ajustamento (fatores demográficos, socioeconômicos e escolares), a exposição a consumo de álcool e tabagismo foram inversamente associados à INL. Os adolescentes que consumiram bebidas alcoólicas tinham chance 27% inferior de INL comparados aos que não consumiram álcool. De forma semelhante, os estudantes fumantes tinham chance 28% inferior de INL do que aqueles que não fumavam. Em relação ao CS, verificou-se que os estudantes fumantes tinham chance 28% menor de exposição a CSF. Conclusão: O consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e tabagismo são fatores inversamente associados à INL e CSF, confirmando achados já relatados na literatura em estudos com adultos.

Objetivo: Analizar la asociación entre la exposición al consumo de alcohol y tabaquismo con la inactividad física en el tiempo libre (INL) y el comportamiento sedentario (CS) en adolescentes. Método: Se trata de un estudio transversal con una muestra representativa de estudiantes de enseñanza media de las escuelas públicas del estado de Pernambuco (Brasil) (n = 4.207, 14-19 años). Los datos fueron recogidos utilizándose un cuestionario previamente validado. El tiempo dedicado para ver la televisión se utilizó como medida de comportamiento sedentario durante la semana (CSS) y también en el fin de semana (CSF) (> 2 horas/dia = expuesto a comportamiento sedentario). La falta de actividad física en los momentos de ocio se consideró como inactividad física en el tiempo libre (INL). Se recurrió a la regresión logística binaria para analizar las asociaciones entre variables, considerando los resultados en la INL y CS. Resultados: Las prevalencias encontradas fueron INL = 38,2% (intervalo de confianza [IC] 95%: 36,7-39,7), CSS = 40,8% (IC 95%: 39,3-42,3) y 49,9% CFS = (IC 95%: 48,4-51,4). Después del ajuste (factores demográficos, socio-económicos y escolares), la exposición al tabaquismo y el consumo de alcohol se asoció inversamente con la INL. Los adolescentes que consumían alcohol tenían 27% menos probabilidad de INL en comparación con aquellos que no consumían alcohol. Del mismo modo, los alumnos fumadores tenían 28% menos probabilidad de INL que los que no fumaban. Tratándose del CS, se encontró que los estudiantes fumadores tenían probabilidad de 28% menos de exposición al CSF. Conclusión: El consumo de bebidas alcohólicas y el tabaquismo se asoció inversamente con el INL y CSF, los hallazgos confirman los resultados ya vistos en la literatura, en estudios con adultos.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever o conhecimento popular relacionado à espinheira-santa (Maytenus ilicifolia) entre erveiros e feirantes que comercializam a planta no centro de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Foi realizada uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, exploratória e descritiva, de agosto a outubro de 2013. Entrevistas semi-estruturadas, com questões sobre os saberes e práticas relacionados à espinheira-santa, foram aplicadas a cinco erveiros e três feirantes do mercado informal de plantas medicinais. Para a análise dos dados foi utilizada a proposta operativa de Minayo, sendo Capra o referencial teórico para este estudo. Foi verificado que o saber relacionado ao uso da espinheira-santa é transmitido de geração a geração, embora existam outras fontes de conhecimento. As indicações do uso popular da espinheira-santa com finalidade terapêutica estão relacionadas a distúrbios gástricos, cicatrização e depuração do sangue. As diferentes formas dos sujeitos deste estudo interagirem com o ambiente, com sua família e em outras relações interpessoais resultam em diferentes saberes relacionados à espinheira-santa.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to describe the popular knowledge related to the espinheira-santa (Maytenus ilicifolia) among herbalists and marketers that sell this plant in the center of Pelotas/Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. A qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research was performed between August and July of 2013. Semi-structured interviews, with questions regarding the knowledge and practices related to this plant, were applied to five herbalists and three marketers inserted in the informal market of medicinal plants. The operative proposal by Minayo was used in order to analyze the data, and the theoretical framework by Capra was used in the discussion. The popular knowledge related to the use of espinheira-santa is passed on from generation to generation, although nowadays there are other sources ofinformation. The popular clueswith therapeutic purposes are related to gastric disorders, healing and blood clearance. The study participants have different forms of interaction with the environment, the family and other interpersonal relationships, resulting in different popular knowledges related to this medicinal plant.

A padronização de técnicas e o teste da associação do Plasma Rico em Plaquetas (PRP) e das Células-Tronco Mononucleares (CTMs) na consolidação de falhas ósseas corticais, por meio de avaliação clínica, biomecânica, radiológica e histológica, é avaliada em um estudo piloto. Foram utilizados seis cães adultos, fêmeas, sem raça definida, pesando entre 5 e 10kg, separados por sorteio aleatório em seis tratamentos. Foi confeccionada uma falha elíptica de 1,0x0,4cm na cortical medial diafisária da tíbia direita de cada animal, sendo preenchida de acordo com o tratamento proposto. No cão I, a falha foi preenchida com solução fisiológica (SF); no II, com o PRP; no III, com a fração total das células mononucleares (FTCM); no IV, com a fração vascular estromal (FVE); no V, com o PRP associado à FTCM; no VI, com a associação PRP e FVE. Foram realizadas avaliações: clínicas, diariamente; dos graus de claudicação, semanalmente; radiológica e perimetria da coxa, antes, no pós-operatório imediato, aos 7, 14, 21 e 30 dias; biomecânica, antes do procedimento, aos 10, 20 e 30 dias; e biópsias, aos 15 e 30 dias. A FTCM obteve uma contagem e viabilidade média de 2,0x108cél. e 90%, respectivamente, enquanto a FVE obteve 3x106cél. e 50%. O PRP concentrou, em média, sete vezes o número inicial de plaquetas do sangue total, de 250.000 µl-1 plaquetas no sangue total para 1.750.000 µl-1 plaquetas no PRP. Obteve-se padronização adequada de técnicas, possibilitando o teste da associação entre as células-tronco mononucleares (CTMs) e o plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP), assim como seu uso isolado, no reparo de falhas ósseas corticais, indicando a possibilidade de a associação FTCM e PRP ser o melhor tratamento.

The standardization of techniques and tests of the association of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Mononuclear Stem Cells (MSCs) in the consolidation of cortical bone defects by clinical, biomechanical, radiological, and histological analysis is evaluated in a pilot study. Six adult female dogs of mixed breed, weighing between 5 and 10kg, separated by random draw in six treatments were used. An elliptical failure of 1.0 x0.4cm was done in the medial diaphyseal cortical of the right tibia of each animal, that was filled according with the proposed treatment. In dog I, the failure was filled with saline (S), in dog II with PRP, in dog III with total mononuclear cell fraction (TMCF), in dog IV with stromal vascular fraction (SVF), in dog V with association of PRP and TMCF, and in dog VI with an association of PRP and SVF. Daily clinical evaluation, weekly degrees of lameness, radiological and girth before, immediate postoperative, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days, biomechanics before the procedure, at 10, 20 and 30 days, and biopsies at 15 and 30 days were performed. The TMCF got a count and viability of 2,0x108cells and 90% respectively, while for SVF it was 3x106cells and 50%, respectively. The PRP concentrated on average seven times the original number of platelets from whole blood, platelets from whole blood 250.000 μl-1to 1.750.000 μl-1platelets in PRP. This afforded adequate standardization of techniques, enabling the test of association between mononuclear stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma(PRP), as well as their separate use to repair cortical bone defects, indicating the possibility of the association between FTCM and PRP to be the best treatment.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus representa um grande problema na bovinocultura e o uso de acaricidas é a medida de controle profilático e terapêutico mais comum contra esses ectoparasitos. Os principais problemas relacionados com essa prática dizem respeito ao desenvolvimento de linhagens resistentes de carrapatos. Assim, objetivou-se determinar o efeito de extratos da casca de Anadenanthera macrocarpa sobre as larvas de R. (B.) microplus, obtidas de um pool de ovos, acondicionadas em tubo de polietileno. De acordo com os resultados, o extrato aquoso na concentração de 8,26mg.mL-1 causou 85% de mortalidade nas primeiras 12 horas. Quanto ao extrato etanólico, observou-se maior mortalidade nas concentrações 12,5; 6,25 e 1,56mg.mL-1, em torno de 84%, percentuais semelhantes ao amitraz. Os controles negativos não apresentaram mortalidade durante o experimento. Assim, tanto o extrato aquoso como o extrato etanólico apresentaram efeito larvicida, embora o extrato etanólico tenha sido mais eficiente para a espécie, podendo ser uma alternativa no controle desse ectoparasito.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus represents a major problem in cattle breeding and the use of acaricides is the most common prophylactic and therapeutic control measure against these ectoparasites. The main problems with this practice relate to the development of resistant strains of ticks. Thus, the objective was to determine the effect of bark extracts from Anadenanthera macrocarpa on the larvae of R.(B.) microplus, obtained from a pool of eggs packed in a polyethylene tube. According to the results, the aqueous extract at a concentration of 8.26mg.mL-1caused 85% mortality in the first 12 hours. As for the ethanolic extract, higher mortality of about 84%, a percentage similar to amitraz, was observed at concentrations of 12.5mg.mL-1, 6.25mg.mL-1 and 1.56mg.mL-1. The negative controls showed no mortality during the experiment. Thus, both the aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed larvicidal activity, although the ethanolic extract has been more efficient and could be an alternative to control this ectoparasite.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos das frações inspiradas de oxigênio (FiO2) de 1 e 0,6 sobre o índice biespectral (BIS) em cães com pressão intracraniana elevada e submetidos a infusão contínua de propofol. Oito animais foram anestesiados em duas ocasiões, recebendo durante a ventilação controlada FiO2 = 1(G100) ou FiO2 = 0,6 (G60). Propofol foi usado para indução (10mg.kg-1) e seguido por infusão contínua (0,6mg.kg-1minuto-1). Após vinte minutos da implantação do cateter de fibra óptica do monitor de pressão intracraniana, na superfície do córtex cerebral direito, realizaram-se as mensurações basais de BIS, índice de qualidade de sinal, taxa de supressão, eletromiografia, pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono ao final da expiração, pressão arterial média, pressão intracraniana e pressão de perfusão cerebral. Em seguida, interrompeu-se o fluxo sanguíneo da veia jugular direita, para o aumento da pressão intracraniana e depois de 20 minutos, novas mensurações foram realizadas em intervalos de 15 minutos (T0, T15, T30, T45 e T60). A pressão parcial de oxigênio no sangue arterial variou conforme a FiO2. Para os outros parâmetros não foram registradas diferenças significativas. Conclui-se que o monitoramento pelo BIS não foi afetado pelo emprego de diferentes FiO2.

The effects of inspired oxygen fractions (FiO2) of 1 and 0.6 on bispectral index (BIS) in dogs with high intracranial pressure, submitted to a continuous rate infusion of propofol were evaluated. Eight dogs were anesthetized on two occasions, receiving, during controlled ventilation, an FiO2 = 1 (G100) or an FiO2 = 0.6 (G60). Propofol was used for induction (10mg.kg-1, IV), followed by a continuous rate infusion (0.6mg.kg-1.minute-1). After 20 minutes, a fiber-optic catheter was implanted on the surface of the right cerebral cortex to monitor the intracranial pressure, the baseline measurements of BIS values, signal quality index, suppression ratio number, electromyogram indicator, end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure, mean arterial pressure, intracranial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure were taken. Then, the blood flow from the right jugular vein was interrupted in order to increase intracranial pressure and after 20 minutes additional recordings were performed at 15-minute intervals (T0, T15, T30, T45 and T60). The arterial oxygen partial pressure varied according to the changes in oxygen. For the other parameters, no significant differences were recorded. The BIS monitoring was not influenced by different FiO2.

A intensificação do tratamento insulínico no Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1 (DM1) tem resultado na melhora do seu controle clínico e metabólico, entretanto com aumento da prevalência de sobrepeso e obesidade, o que contribuiria para um maior risco cardiovascular. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os fatores demográficos, clínicos e laboratoriais associados à presença de dislipidemia em uma população de pacientes com DM1 comparada a uma população não diabética. Estudamos 72 pacientes com DM1, sendo 52,8% do sexo feminino, com idade de 22,7 ± 9,6 anos e índice de massa corporal (IMC) de 21,1 ± 3,1Kg/m², e 66 pacientes não diabéticos, sendo 60,6% do sexo feminino, com idade de 23,1 ± 10,9 anos e IMC de 22,1 ± 3,7Kg/m². A amostra incluía 13 crianças, sendo 6 com DM1, 47 adolescentes, sendo 23 com DM1, e 78 adultos, sendo 43 com DM1. Observamos na população adulta de pacientes com DM1 menor apoB (p< 0,01), maior índice apoA/apoB (p< 0,01) e menor sobrepeso (p= 0,04) em relação à população não diabética, não sendo encontrada diferença no perfil lipídico entre essas populações. As crianças e adolescentes diabéticas apresentaram maior prevalência de colesterol total alterado (p= 0,02 e p< 0,01, respectivamente) e LDL-colesterol alterado (p= 0,02 e p= 0,01, respectivamente) em comparação às crianças e adolescentes não DM. Concluímos que os métodos usualmente utilizados na rotina de atendimento ambulatorial de pacientes com DM1 não são capazes de identificar as alterações lipídicas que poderiam ser indicativas do maior risco cardiovascular nestes pacientes, principalmente no que diz respeito à população adulta.

Intensive insulin therapy in patients with type 1diabetes is resulting in a better clinic and metabolic control. On the other hand, an increase in overweight and obesity prevalence, which could contribute to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, has been observed. The aim of our study is to analyze the demographics, clinical and laboratorial factors associated to the presence of dyslipidemia in a group of patients with type 1 diabetes compared to a non-diabetic population. We have studied 72 type 1 diabetics: 52.8% female, aged 22.7 ± 9.6 years old, with a body mass index (BMI) of 21.1 ± 3.1Kg/m² and 66 non-diabetic patients: 60.6% female, aged 23.1 ± 10.9 years old and a BMI of 22.12 ± 3.7Kg/m². The group included 13 children (6 with type 1 diabetes), 47 adolescents (23 with type 1 diabetes) and 78 adults (43 with type 1 diabetes). We have found in the adult population with type 1 diabetes a lower overweight prevalence and lower levels of apoB (p< 0.01) and a higher apoA/apoB ratio (p< 0.01) when compared to the non-diabetic population. We have not found difference in the lipid profile in adult groups. Diabetic children and adolescents had higher frequency of total cholesterol (p= 0.02 and p< 0.01, respectively) and LDL-cholesterol (p= 0.02 and p= 0.01 respectively) above the upper limit when compared to the non-diabetic group. We concluded that the conventional methods for detecting lipids alterations in outpatients with type 1 diabetes under routine care are not sufficient to identify the lipid alterations, which could be related to the higher risk of cardiovascular disease in adult population.

Laminin levels in ascitic fluid have been proposed as a marker for neoplastic ascites. We compared the concentration of laminin in serum and in ascitic fluid from patients with hepatic cirrhosis and peritoneal carcinomatosis and assessed the diagnostic value of serum laminin levels in differentiating neoplastic from benign ascites. Laminin concentrations were determined by ELISA with antibodies against laminin extracted from the human placenta, in patients with ascites due to peritoneal carcinomatosis (N = 20) and hepatic cirrhosis (N = 33). Patients with infected or hemorrhagic ascites were excluded. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of serum laminin for the diagnosis of neoplastic ascites. When compared to the group with cirrhosis, the carcinomatosis group presented significantly higher mean laminin levels in serum (3.3 ± 0.5 vs 2.1 ± 0.4 µg/ml, mean ± SD, P < 0.05) and ascites (2.8 ± 0.5 vs 1.6 ± 0.4 µg/ml, P < 0.05). Although laminin concentration was higher in serum than in ascites, the laminin serum/ascites ratio and serum-ascites gradient did not differ between the studied groups. A significant correlation (r = 0.93, P < 0.0001) was observed between the serum and ascites laminin values. Serum laminin levels >2.25 µg/ml showed 100% sensitivity and 73% specificity for the diagnosis of neoplastic ascites. Serum concentration seems to be the main determinant of laminin levels in ascitic fluid and its values can be used as a diagnostic parameter in the study of neoplastic ascites.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the importance of quantifying the adenocarcinoma in prostate biopsies when determining the tumor's final stage in patients who undergo radical prostatectomy. To identify the best methodology for obtaining such data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prostate biopsies from 132 patients were examined, with determination of Gleason histological grade and tumor volume in number of involved fragments, tumor extent of the fragment mostly affected by the tumor and the total percentage of tumor in the specimen. Theses parameters were statistically correlated with the neoplasia's final stage following the evaluation of radical prostatectomy specimens. RESULTS: An average of 12 and a median of 14 biopsy fragments were evaluated per patient. In the univariate analysis the Gleason histological grade, the largest tumor extent in one fragment and the total percentage of tumor in the specimen were correlated with tumor stage of the surgical specimen. In the multivariate analysis, the Gleason histological grade and the total percentage of tumor were strongly correlated with the neoplasia's final stage. The risk of the tumor not being confined was 3 for Gleason 7 tumors and 10.6 for Gleason 8 tumors or above. In cases where the tumor involved more than 60% of the specimen, the risk of non-confined disease was 4.4 times. Among 19 patients with unfavorable histological parameters, Gleason > 7 and extension greater than 60% the tumor final stage was pT3 in 95%. CONCLUSION: When associated to the Gleason histological grade, tumor quantification in prostate biopsies is an important factor for determining organ-confined disease, and among the methods, total percentage of tumor is the most informative one. Such data should be included in the pathological report and must be incorporated in future nomograms.

Realizou-se estudo retrospectivo (1987-2002) dos aspectos clínicos das fraturas vertebrais em eqüinos, bovinos, ovinos, caprinos e suínos atendidos no hospital veterinário da FMVZ-Unesp de Botucatu. Todos os casos tiveram confirmação radiográfica ou post-mortem. Segundo a espécie, a ordem de acometimento foi: bovina, eqüina, ovina, caprina e suína. As lesões ocorreram desde os 12 dias de idade até os 10 anos, com maior freqüência até os 12 meses. O segmento torácico foi o mais comprometido seguido dos segmentos lombar, cervical e sacral. As fraturas vertebrais devem fazer parte da lista de diagnósticos diferenciais de animais em decúbito, independente da espécie, sexo ou idade.

It was performed a retrospective study (1987-2002) of clinical features of spinal fractures in the equine, bovine, ovine, caprine and swine referred to the Veterinary Hospital - FMVZ-Unesp in Botucatu, SP, Brazil. All the cases were confirmed by necropsy or radiographic evaluation. Bovines were the most affected species, followed by horses, sheep, goats and swines, and lesions occurred from 12 days to 10 years of age, being more frequent up to 12 months of age. Thoracic vertebrae were the most affected, followed by lumbar, cervical and sacral segments. Vertebral fractures should be included for differential diagnosis of recumbent animals, independently on species, sex or age.

Este trabalho objetivou relacionar o diâmetro da vesícula embrionária/fetal (DVE) e comprimento craniocaudal do embrião/feto (CCC) do 15º ao 45º dia de gestação com a idade de gestação em ovelhas. Utilizaram-se 19 ovelhas adultas da raça Bergamácia, com cio sincronizado e cobertas por um mesmo reprodutor. A avaliação ultra-sonográfica foi realizada diariamente do 15º ao 30º dia após a cobrição e a cada cinco dias do 30º ao 45º dia, utilizando-se aparelho com transdutor linear de 5,0 e 7,5MHZ. O crescimento diário médio do DVE e CCC foi de 1,40mm e 1,33mm, respectivamente. A calibragem inversa obtida para DVE foi: Dias = -11 + 50(0,1 + 0,04log DVE)½, com R² = 0,85 e para CCC foi: Dias = 13,63 + 12,5(-0,71 + 0,16CCC)½, com R² = 0,93. Tanto o DVE como o CCC obtidos por ultra-sonografia são medidas pelas quais se pode prever a idade de gestação em ovelhas da raça Bergamácia.

This study aimed to relate embryonic/fetal vesicle diameter (EVD) and crown-rump length (CRL) to gestational age in ewes from the 15th to the 45th day of pregnancy. Nineteen adult Bergamácia ewes with synchronized estrus were mated by the same male. Ultrasonographic evaluations were performed every 24 hours from the 15th to the 30th day after mating and every five days from the 30th to the 45th day using 5.0 and 7.5MHZ linear transducers. Average daily growth of EVD and CRL were 1.40mm and 1.33mm, respectively. The inverse calibration obtained for EVD was: Days = -11 + 50(0.1 + 0.04log EVD)½ with R² = 0.85, and for CRL was: Days = 13.63 + 12.5(- 0.71 + 0.16CRL)½ with R² = 0.93. Both EVD and CRL obtained by ultrasonography are useful measurements that allow the prediction of gestational age in Bergamácia ewes.

A síntese de alguns derivados dos 1,2,4-oxadiazóis (4a-d) partindo das arilamidoximas apropriadas (1a-d) e do ácido N-t-butoxycarbonil-O-benzil-L-aspártico é descrita. As estruturas destes novos compostos foram determinadas por meios espectroscópicos.

The synthesis of some 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives (4a-d) starting from arylamidoximes 1a-d and N-t-butoxycarbonyl-O-benzyl-L-aspartic acid is described. The structures of these new products have been determined by spectroscopic methods.
