RESUMO Objetivou-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar in vitro o potencial probiótico e adsorvente de Saccharomyces cerevisiae para aflatoxina B1 em condições simuladas do trato intestinal de peixes. Foram utilizadas três cepas de leveduras, sendo duas provenientes de cervejaria: S. cerevisiae RC1 e S. cerevisiae RC3, e uma de ambiente de piscicultura: S. cerevisiae A8L2. As leveduras selecionadas foram submetidas aos seguintes testes in vitro: inibição homóloga, autoagregação, coagregação, atividade antibacteriana, viabilidade às condições gastrointestinais e adsorção de AFB1. Todas as estirpes de S. cerevisiae mostraram boa capacidade de autoagregação e coagregação com bactérias patogênicas. Todas as estirpes de levedura foram capazes de sobreviver às condições gastrointestinais. Em condições ácidas, os fatores (cepa x tempo) tiveram interação (P=0,0317), resultando em variações significativas entre as cepas testadas nos períodos de tempo analisados. Observou-se que também houve interação (P=0,0062) em condições intestinais, havendo um aumento do número de células no período de 12h para todas as cepas avaliadas. No ensaio de adsorção, a estirpe A8L2 foi a mais eficaz estatisticamente (P<0,005), para as duas concentrações de AFB1 avaliadas neste estudo (10 e 25ng. mL-1). Dessa forma, conclui-se que as cepas de Saccharomyces cerevisiae possuem potencial probiótico e adsorvente de AFB1.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the probiotic potential and absorption of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the aflatoxin B1 in simulated fish intestinal tract conditions. Three yeast strains were used, two from brewery: S. cerevisiae RC1 and S. cerevisiae RC3 and one from a fish farming environment: S. cerevisiae A8L2. The selected yeasts were subjected to the following in vitro tests: homologous inhibition, self-aggregation, co-aggregation, antibacterial activity, gastrointestinal conditions tolerance and adsorption of AFB1. All S. cerevisiae strains showed good capability of self-aggregation and co-aggregation with pathogenic bacteria. All yeast strains were able to survive the gastrointestinal conditions. In acidic conditions, the factors (strain vs. time) had interaction (P=0.0317), resulting in significant variation among the strains tested in the time periods analyzed. It was observed that there was also interaction (P=0.0062) in intestinal conditions, with an increased number of cells in the 12-hour period for all strains tested. In the adsorption test, the A8L2 strain was statistically more effective (P<0.005) for both AFB1 concentrations evaluated in this study (10 and 25ng/mL). Thus, it was observed that the strains of S. cerevisiae have potential probiotic and adsorbent of AFB1.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de complexos enzimáticos sobre a energia metabolizável e o coeficiente de digestibilidade de nutrientes do milheto para frangos de corte. Quinhentos e setenta e seis frangos machos foram distribuídos em 36 gaiolas, com três tratamentos: T1 - composição de milheto sem complexo enzimático; T2 - composição de milheto com complexo enzimático (CES) e T3 - composição de milheto com complexo enzimático (CEV). Os tratamentos foram definidos com base em seis dietas (três dietas referências e três dietas testes). As dietas testes foram obtidas pela substituição de 40% da dieta referência por milheto inteiro, e a adição de enzimas consistiu de dois complexos enzimáticos: CES, constituído pelas enzimas fitase, protease, xilanase, β-glucanase, celulase, amilase e pectinase; e CEV. constituído pelas enzimas protease, celulase e amilase. Na fase de 11 a 20 dias, a suplementação com o CEV reduziu os valores de EMA, EMAn e CDPB. A suplementação com CES melhorou o CDPB, e não houve efeito significativo para CDMS e CDEB. Na fase de 21 a 30 dias, houve menor aproveitamento da energia e dos nutrientes com as suplementações CES e CEV. Na fase de 31 a 40 dias, as suplementações reduziram os valores de EMA, EMAn, e o complexo CEV foi efetivo em aumentar o valor de CDPB. A inclusão dos complexos enzimáticos CES (fitase, protease, xilanase, β-glucanase, celulase, amilase e pectinase) e CEV (protease, celulase e amilase) não favoreceu a utilização da energia do milheto, no entanto melhorou o coeficiente de digestibilidade da proteína do milheto nos períodos de 11 a 20 e de 31 a 40 dias de idade.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of enzymatic complexes on metabolizable energy and nutrient digestibility coefficient of millet for broilers chickens. 576 male chickens, were distributed in 36 cages with three treatments: T1 - millet composition without enzymatic complex; T2 - millet composition with enzymatic complex (ECS); and T3 - millet composition with enzymatic complex (ECV). The treatments were defined from six diets (3 reference diets and 3 test diets). The test diets were obtained from the substitution of 40% for reference diet by whole millet, and the enzyme addition consisted of two enzymatic complex, ECS constituted by phytase, protease, xylanase, β-glucanase, cellulase, amylase and pectinase enzymes, and ECV constituted by protease, cellulase and amylase enzymes. In the 11 to 20 days phase, a supplementation with the ECV reduced the AME, AMEn and CDPB values, a ECS supplementation improved the CDPB, and there was no significant effect for CDMS and CDEB. In the 21 to 30 days phase, there were less profit of the energy and nutrients with ECS and ECV supplements. In the 31 to 40 days phase as supplements reduced the values of AME, AMEn, and the ECV complex was effective in increasing the value of CDPB. The inclusion of ECS enzymatic complexes, (phytase, protease, xylanase, β-glucanase, cellulase, amylase and pectinase) and ECV (protease, cellulase and amylase), did not favor millet's energy utilization, however, favored the millet's protein digestibility coefficient on 11 to 20 and 31 to 40 periods.

RESUMO: O cultivo de plantas transgênicas de soja com genes de resistência ao glyphosate (soja RR) ocupa cerca de 47% da área mundial com essa cultura. Apesar da grande área cultivada com soja resistente ao glyphosate, são escassos os estudos sobre o impacto ambiental dessa tecnologia, principalmente em áreas tropicais. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto da soja RR e do glyphosate sobre a comunidade de artrópodes da superfície do solo. O experimento foi realizado no município de Coimbra, Estado de Minas Gerais, durante dois anos agrícolas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos estudados foram: soja não transgênica com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja RR com capina mecânica das plantas daninhas; soja RR com uma aplicação de glyphosate; e soja RR com três aplicações de glyphosate. As populações de artrópodes da superfície do solo foram amostradas em dois cultivos: o primeiro no biênio 2007/2008 e o segundo no biênio 2008/2009. A soja transgênica RR não afetou a riqueza e a abundância dos artrópodes. Menores riquezas de artrópodes predadores e detritívoros foram observadas nos tratamentos que receberam uma ou três aplicações de glyphosate. Foram observadas menores densidades de artrópodes na soja transgênica com três aplicações de glyphosate do que nos demais tratamentos, sobretudo dos predadores Achaearaneasp. (Araneae: Theridiidae), Oxypodinisp. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) e Solenopsissp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) e dos detritívoros Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrurasp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) e Xyleborussp. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Os resultados indicam que a inserção do gene de resistência ao glyphosate não afeta a riqueza e abundância dos artrópodes e que o uso de três aplicações do herbicida reduz as densidades de predadores e detritívoros da superfície do solo.

ABSTRACT: The cultivation of transgenic soybean plants using the glyphosate resistant gene (RR soybeans), takes up about 47% of the world’s cropping area. Despite the large area planted with soybeans resistant to glyphosate, there are very few studies of the environmental impact of this technology, especially in tropical areas. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of the cultive of RR soybeans and the use of glyphosate on the community of soil surface arthropods. The experiment was conducted in Coimbra, Minas Gerais state for two agricultural years. The experimental design was conducted in randomized blocks with five replications. The treatments were: non-transgenic soybean with mechanical weeding; RR soybean with mechanical weeding; RR soybean with one application of glyphosate and RR soybean with three applications of glyphosate. The populations of the soil surface arthropods were sampled over two years of cultivation (2007/2008 and 2008/2009). The cultive of RR soybean did not affect the richness and abundance of arthropods. A lower number of predators and detritivorous arthropods were observed in the treatments with one or three applications of glyphosate. Lower densities of arthropods were observed on the cultive of transgenic soybeans with three applications of glyphosate compared to the other treatments, especially the predators Achaearaneasp. (Araneae: Theridiidae), Oxypodinisp. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), Solenopsisspp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), the detritivorous Entomobryidae (Collembola), Hypogastrurasp. (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) and Xyleborussp. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). The results indicate that the insertion of the glyphosate resistant gene does not affect the richness and abundance of the arthropods, however the use of glyphosate reduce the densities of predators and detritivorous on the soil surface.

In the current post-genomic era, the genetic basis of pig growth can be understood by assessing SNP marker effects and genomic breeding values (GEBV) based on estimates of these growth curve parameters as phenotypes. Although various statistical methods, such as random regression (RR-BLUP) and Bayesian LASSO (BL), have been applied to genomic selection (GS), none of these has yet been used in a growth curve approach. In this work, we compared the accuracies of RR-BLUP and BL using empirical weight-age data from an outbred F2 (Brazilian Piau X commercial) population. The phenotypes were determined by parameter estimates using a nonlinear logistic regression model and the halothane gene was considered as a marker for evaluating the assumptions of the GS methods in relation to the genetic variation explained by each locus. BL yielded more accurate values for all of the phenotypes evaluated and was used to estimate SNP effects and GEBV vectors. The latter allowed the construction of genomic growth curves, which showed substantial genetic discrimination among animals in the final growth phase. The SNP effect estimates allowed identification of the most relevant markers for each phenotype, the positions of which were coincident with reported QTL regions for growth traits.

Avaliaram-se o efeito de inclusão crescente de fitase (unidade de fitase - UF) em dietas para suínos na fase de crescimento pela técnica de diluição isotópica. Foram utilizados 20 suínos, machos castrados, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos - 0, 250, 500, 750 e 1000UF/kg da ração - e quatro repetições. Os animais foram alojados em gaiolas metabólicas por 17 dias, sendo 10 dias para adaptação e sete dias para coleta de fezes e urina. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas por cinco dias. No primeiro dia da fase experimental, cada animal recebeu por via endovenosa em solução radioativa com 7,4MBq de 32P. A Quantum Phytase foi eficiente em disponibilizar o P fítico para suínos em crescimento até 750UF/kg de dieta, sendo que 500UF/kg da ração foi o indicado para dietas à base de milho e farelo de soja, formuladas de acordo com o conceito de proteína ideal.

The effects of increasing levels of phytase (phytase units - PU) for pigs, using the isotopic dilution technique, were evaluated on 20 crossbred barrows in a randomized block design experiment, with five treatments, 0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000PUkg diet, and four replicates. The animals were kept in metabolic cages for a 10-day adaptation period and seven days for total collection of feces and urine. Blood samples were taken for five days. On the first day of the collection period each animal was injected intravenously with 7.4 MBq 32P. Phytase was efficient to improve the availability of the P phytate for pigs until the level of 750 PU/kg diet. The level of 500 PU/kg diet is indicated for diets based on soybean meal and corn, formulated according to the concept of ideal protein.

Organotin compounds are typical environmental contaminants and suspected endocrine-disrupting substances, which cause irreversible sexual abnormality in female mollusks, called "imposex". However, little is known about the capability of triorganotin compounds, such as tributyltin and triphenyltin, to cause disorders in the sexual development and reproductive functions of mammals, including humans and rodents. Moreover, these compounds can act as potential competitive inhibitors of aromatase enzyme and other steroidogenic enzymes, affecting the reproductive capacity of male and female mammals. In this review, we discuss the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms by which triorganotin compounds induce adverse effects in the mammalian reproductive function.

Determinaram-se os coeficientes de digestibilidade e de metabolizabilidade da matéria seca (MS), da energia bruta (EB), da proteína bruta (PB) e da fibra bruta (FB) e as energias digestível e metabolizável do resíduo desidratado de cervejaria (RDC) para suínos na fase de terminação, e avaliaram-se o desempenho e as características da carcaça desses animais, alimentados com dietas que continham porcentagens de inclusão do RDC - 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20% -, bem como estudaram-se os parâmetros fisiológicos. No ensaio de digestibilidade, foram utilizados 12 leitões, machos, com média de peso de 57,3±5,6kg. Seis deles receberam a ração referência, à base de milho e farelo de soja, e seis a ração teste. No ensaio de desempenho, foram utilizados 40 leitões, com média de peso de 60,8±1,98kg. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente da MS, EB, PB e FB foram, respectivamente, de 53,9%, 73,9%, 53,3% e 62,5%, e os valores das energias digestível e metabolizável do RDC de 2.628 e 2.623kcal/kg, respectivamente. A inclusão de RDC até a proporção de 20% não influenciou os parâmetros de desempenho e fisiológicos, nem as características de carcaça de suínos em terminação.

The digestibility and metabolizability coefficients of the dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of the dehydrated residue of brewery (DRB) for swine in termination were determined. Performance and carcass characteristics of animals fed with diets containing 5 levels of inclusion of DRB (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%) were evaluated as well as the physiologic parameters. In the digestibility assay 12 male pigs weighing 57.3±5.6kg were used. Six pigs were fed reference diets, based on corn and soybean meals, and six pigs were fed a test diet. In the performance study, 40 pigs weighing 60.8±1.98kg were used. Apparent digestibility coefficients for the DM, GE, CP and CF were 53.9%, 73.9%, 53.3% and 62.5%, respectively. The values of the digestible and metabolizable energy of the DRB were 2,628 kcal/kg and 2,623kcal/kg respectively. The inclusion of up to 20% of DRB in diets did not interfere in performance, carcass characteristics and physiologic parameters of swine in termination.

Avaliaram-se as características andrológicas do sêmen de touros jovens do composto Red Norte (Nelore x Tabapuã x Red Angus x Sinepol), com idade média de 13,9±0,8 meses, com o objetivo de estimar o advento da puberdade e a qualidade do sêmen. Foram avaliados o perímetro escrotal (PE), o peso e as características seminais de 70 tourinhos, classificados em três grupos, de acordo com o PE: GI=27-33cm (n=24), GII=33-35cm (n=24) e GIII=35-43cm (n=22). As médias de peso e a idade de cada grupo (G) foram, respectivamente: GI=411,2±37,4kg e 13,8±1,0 meses, GII=426,9±31,5kg e 14,0±0,7 meses e GIII=438,4±38,3kg e 14,0±0,6 meses. As características seminais para cada grupo foram, volume 4,2±3,1mL, 5,3±2,6mL e 4,5±2,1mL; motilidade 31,3±24,1%, 44,2±23,9% e 43,9±21,5% e vigor 2,8±1,6, 3,5±1,3 e 3,5±1,3, respectivamente. O espermiograma apresentou valores médios de concentração de 130,5±266,2x10(6)/mL, 289,5±390,2x10(6)/mL e 333,9±523,7x10(6)/mL, defeitos totais de 81,4±15,9%, 73,8±15,4% e 67,9±19,0%; defeitos maiores de 87,3±26,2%, 66,8±24,9% e 56,7±17,1% e defeitos menores de 16,6±14,9%, 33,2±24,9% e 43,3±17,1%, respectivamente. Dos setenta animais examinados, sete (10%) foram considerados aptos à reprodução. Os resultados mostraram que a patologia espermática diminuiu em razão do aumento do PE.

Reproductive traits of cross-breed Red Norte (Nelore x Tabapuã x Red Angus x Sinepol) young bulls averaging of 13.9±0.8 month-old were evaluated, in order to determine the puberty onset and semen quality in these animals. Scrotal circumference (SC), body weight (BW), and semen parameters of 70 bulls were measured. Animals were allotted in three groups (G) according to their SC: GI=27-33cm (n=24), GII=33-35cm (n=24), and GIII=35-43cm (n=22). BW and age of each group were, respectively: GI=411.2±37.4kg and 13.8±1.0 month-old, GII=426.9±31.5kg and 14.0±0.7 month-old, and GIII=438.4±38.3kg and 14.0±0.6 month-old. Seminal physical characteristics for same order of groups were: volume 4.2±3.1mL, 5.3±2.6mL, and 4.5±2.1mL; motility 31.3±24.1%, 44.2±23.9%, and 43.9±21.5%; and vigor 2.8±1.6, 3.5±1.3, and 3.5±1.3. The spermiogram presented concentration values of 130.5±266.2x10(6)/mL, 289.5±390.2x10(6)/mL, and 333.9±523.7x10(6)/mL; total defects of 81.4±15.9%, 73.8±15.4%, and 67.9±19.0%; major defects of 87.3±26.2%, 66.8±24.9% and 56.7±17.1%; and minor defects of 16.6±14.9%, 33.2±24.9%, and 43.3±17.1%, for same order of groups. Seven out of 70 bulls were considered satisfactory potential breeders. Results showed that semen pathology progressively decreased when SC increased.

A adaptabilidade de caprinos de dois grupos genéticos, Saanen e Azul, às condições climáticas do Meio-Norte do Brasil foi avaliada por meio dos testes de Ibéria, Benezra e Rainsby. Nos dois primeiros, foram utilizadas sete fêmeas de cada grupo racial e, no terceiro, quatro fêmeas de cada grupo. Foram realizadas quatro coletas de dados em cada período (chuvoso e seco) de 2005. Foi utilizado delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em fatorial 2x2 (duas raças e dois períodos). Os valores do coeficiente de tolerância ao calor do teste de Ibéria no período seco diferiram entre os grupos (P<0,05) (Saanen = 97,65 e Azul = 94,31). Houve diferença entre grupos (P<0,05) quanto ao coeficiente de adaptabilidade 1 do teste de Benezra, nos dois períodos (chuvoso: Saanen = 5,13 e Azul = 3,26; seco: Saanen = 5,86 e Azul = 2,87). No teste de Rainsby, no grupo Azul, houve o retorno à temperatura de repouso nos dois períodos. Na Saanen, no período no seco, 100 minutos não foram suficientes para o retorno à temperatura de repouso. O grupo racial Azul mostrou-se mais adaptado às condições do Meio-Norte.

This study was undertaken to evaluate Saanen and Azul goats' adaptability to the Brazilian Middle-North region, based on adaptation indexes (Iberia, Benezra and Rainsby tests). A totall of seven and four females, respectively, of each group were used in two tests and four collections were performed during the rainy and dry periods of 2005 year. A completely randomized experimental design in a 2 x 2 (2 groups x 2 period) factorial treatment combination was used. Significant difference between groups (Saanen = 97.65 and Azul = 94.31) was observed for heat-tolerance coefficient (Iberia) during the dry period (P<.05). Significant differences between groups (P<0.05) were also observed for adaptability, coefficient 1 (Benezra) for both rainy (Saanen = 5.13 and Azul = 3.26) and dry periods (Saanen = 5.86 and Azul = 2.87). Based on Rainsby test, Azul goats returned to rest temperature in both periods. During the dry period 100 minutes were not enough for Saanen goats return to rest temperature. Azul goats showed higher adaptability to environment conditions of the Brazilian Middle-North region.

The biological flow of P was evaluated among the physiologic or the anatomical compartments of pigs fed diets with increasing phytase levels, using P-32 as tracer. The experimental design was completely randomized. Treatments consisted of phytase levels in diets (253, 759, 1265, and 1748UF/kg). The evaluated variables were: feed intake, excretion, specific activities and flow of P in the compartments (gut, blood, bone, and soft tissus). Phytase level did not interfere with fecal and urinary excretion, specific activities, incorporation and resorption of bone, and soft tissue P and in the bidirectional flow of gut and blood, but linearly affected P absorption and bone P retention. The best response was observed with the lowest phytase levels.

A pesquisa foi realizada para avaliar o fluxo biológico do fósforo entre os compartimentos, fisiológicos ou anatômicos, de suínos mantidos em dietas que continham níveis crescentes de fitase, usando o P-32 como traçador. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, sendo os tratamentos constituídos por níveis de enzima fitase, 253, 759, 1265 e 1748 UF/kg, nas dietas. As variáveis avaliadas foram: ingestão, excreção, atividades específicas e fluxo de P nos compartimentos (trato digestivo, corrente sanguínea, tecidos moles e ossos). A enzima fitase não interferiu nas excreções fecais e urinárias, nas atividades específicas, na incorporação e na reabsorção de P nos ossos e nos tecidos moles e no fluxo bidirecional do trato digestivo e na corrente sanguínea, mas afetou linearmente a absorção e a retenção nos ossos. As respostas mais evidentes dos efeitos da adição da fitase são observadas nos níveis mais baixos.

Avaliou-se o efeito da adição de diferentes tipos e concentrações de soro sobre o desenvolvimento e a sobrevivência de folículos ovarianos pré-antrais (FOPA) caprinos in vitro. Além disso, verificou-se a relação entre as concentrações de nitrito presentes no meio de cultivo e a viabilidade folicular. Cada par ovariano foi dividido em 29 fragmentos, sendo um destinado ao controle. Os fragmentos foram cultivados por um ou sete dias em meio essencial mínimo suplementado (MEM+) ou MEM+ com diferentes concentrações (10 ou 20%) de soro fetal bovino (SFB), soro de cabra em estro (SCE) ou soro de cabra em diestro (SCD). Na análise morfológica após sete dias, apenas o tratamento com 10% de SFB apresentou percentual de FOPA normais similar ao MEM+ (P>0,05). A análise ultra-estrutural dos folículos cultivados por sete dias com MEM+ ou MEM+ com 10% de SFB mostrou danos oocitários, porém células da granulosa normais. A análise do meio de cultivo revelou correlação positiva entre a viabilidade folicular e a produção de nitrito. A suplementação com soro não melhorou a viabilidade de FOPA e a concentração de nitrito no meio de cultivo funcionou como um indicador da viabilidade das células da granulosa de FOPA caprinos cultivados in vitro.

The effect of the addition of different types and concentrations of sera on the viability and development of caprine preantal follicles (PAF) in vitro cultured was analyzed. In addition, it was evaluated the correlation between nitrite concentrations in culture medium and folicular viability. Each ovarian pair was divided in 29 fragments and one was used as control. The fragments were cultured for one or seven days in minimal essential medium (MEM+) or MEM+ with different concentrations of (10 or 20%) bovine fetal serum (BFS), estrous goat serum (EGS), or diestrous goat serum (DGS). After seven days, the morphological analysis showed that only the treatment with 10% BFS maintained the percentage of normal PAF similar to MEM+ (P>0.05). The ultrastructural analysis of follicles cultured for seven days in MEM+ or MEM+ with 10% BFS showed some oocyte damage, although the granulosa cells were normal. Analysis of culture medium revealed a positive correlation between follicular viability and nitrite production. Supplementation with serum did not improve the viability of PAF and nitrite levels in culture medium served as an indicator of viability of granulose cells from caprine PAF in vitro cultured.

Investigou-se a atividade antiviral do útero e da placenta bovina, ao longo da gestação, induzidos pelo vírus da doença de Newcastle (NDV). Explantes do endométrio e carúnculas foram colhidos do útero. Os tecidos corioamniótico, corioalantóide e cotilédones foram dissecados da placenta fetal. Os cultivos celulares foram induzidos com aproximadamente 6,0 unidades hemaglutinantes do NDV. Os sobrenadantes foram concentrados 20 vezes, filtrados em dispositivos com superfície de separação de 100kDa e a atividade antiviral foi titulada em células MDBK e vírus da estomatite vesicular (VSV). Endométrio, carúnculas e cotilédones não apresentaram atividade antiviral. Corioamniótico e corioalantóide produziram fatores antivirais ao longo da gestação. Estes fatores não foram relacionados aos IFN - alfa, gama ou tau e nem ao TNF - alfa. O padrão de produção de fatores antivirais acompanhou o desenvolvimento dos tecidos fetais e títulos mais altos foram observados no final da gestação. Estes dados sugerem que os genes de IFNs induzidos por vírus localizam-se nas membranas fetais da placenta e a expressão desses genes é dependente do estádio da gestação.

The antiviral activity profile of the uterus and fetal membranes from bovine placenta, induced by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) throughout gestation, was investigated. Explants of the endometrium and caruncles were collected from the uterus, and amniochorion, allantochorion and cotyledons, from fetal placenta. Tissue cultures were induced with ~6.0 hemagglutinating units (HU) of NDV. Supernatants were concentrated 20 fold, filtered in 100kDa cut-off membranes and antiviral activity was titrated in MDBK x VSV system. Tissues of the uterus did not exhibit antiviral activity, while allantochorion and amniochorion produced antiviral factors throughout gestation. Antiviral factors were not related with IFN-alpha, gamma, tau or TNF-alpha. The antiviral activity pattern observed showed to be related with the development of fetal membranes and increased at the end of pregnancy. Such data suggest that IFN genes inducible by virus are present in fetal membranes of the cow placenta and their expression is dependent on the age of gestation.

Osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are chronic degenerative diseases which have been considered to be independent and whose common characteristic is increasing incidence with age. At present, growing evidence indicates the existence of a correlation between cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, irrespective of age. The morbidity and mortality of osteoporosis is mainly related to the occurrence of fractures. Atherosclerosis shows a high rate of morbidity and especially mortality because of its clinical repercussions such as angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular insufficiency. Atherosclerotic disease is characterized by the accumulation of lipid material in the arterial wall resulting from autoimmune and inflammatory mechanisms. More than 90% of these fatty plaques undergo calcification. The correlation between osteoporosis and atherosclerosis is being established by studies of the underlying physiopathological mechanisms, which seem to coincide in many biochemical pathways, and of the risk factors for vascular disease, which have also been associated with a higher incidence of low-bone mineral density. In addition, there is evidence indicating an action of antiresorptive drugs on the reduction of cardiovascular risks and the effect of statins, antihypertensives and insulin on bone mass increase. The mechanism of arterial calcification resembles the process of osteogenesis, involving various cells, proteins and cytokines that lead to tissue mineralization. The authors review the factors responsible for atherosclerotic disease that correlate with low-bone mineral density.

Foram utilizados 112 leitões com peso inicial de 28,68kg, distribuídos em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 8×2 (oito tratamentos x dois sexos), sete repetições e dois animais por baia. As dietas foram formuladas com base no fósforo total, sendo estas à base de milho e de farelo de soja. O fósforo foi suplementado utilizando-se os fosfatos: bicálcico (FBC); monobicálcico (MBC); supertriplo (ST); supersimples (SS); rocha Catalão (ROCHA); mistura de fontes (MIST) e ácido fosfórico (AcF); e dieta-controle, sem o fósforo suplementar (CONT). Avaliou-se previamente a composição química de amostras de fontes de fósforo disponíveis no mercado. Os fosfatos MBC, FBC e AcF apresentaram baixo nível de contaminação por metais pesados. Observou-se variação no teor de metais pesados entre as marcas comerciais de supertriplo. O consumo do fosfato resultou em acúmulo de cobre nos músculos. A dieta-controle provocou acúmulo de chumbo e zinco no fígado, e a mistura de fontes e supertriplo ocasionou acúmulo de cádmio no fígado. A utilização de fontes alternativas de fósforo menos elaboradas influenciou a deposição de minerais no fígado e nos músculos dos suínos.

One hundred twelve pigs averaging weight of 28.68kg, were allotted to a completely randomized blocks with seven replicates of two animals per box. The treatments consisted in factorial 8×2 (eight phosphorus sources x two sexes). The experimental diets were formulated based on corn and soybean meal and the phosphorus was supplemented through phosphate dicalcium (FBC), monodicalcium (MBC), triple superphosphate (ST), simple superphosphate (SS), Catalão rock (ROCHA), mixture of sources (MIST), and phosphoric acid (AcF) in addition to a control diet without supplemental phosphous (CONT). Samples of phosphorus sources available in the market were evaluated for particle size and chemical composition. The MBC, FBC and AcF showed a low level of heavy metal contamination, but a variation in the heavy metal composition for ST was observed. Swines fed on CONT diet showed lead and zinc accumulation in the liver. Swines fed on triple superphosphate and mixture of sources diets showed cadmium accumulation in the liver. Swine fed on ST diet showed copper accumulation in the muscles. Swine diets formulated with alternative and less elaborated sources of phosphorus caused liver and muscles deposition of minerals.

O experimento foi desenvolvido para avaliar a cinética do P em tecidos de suínos em crescimento, alimentados com rações contendo P orgânico e vários níveis de fitase, com o uso do 32P como indicador. Foram usados 12 animais mestiços, machos castrados, com peso médio de 31,68± 1,62kg, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema de parcela subdividida, contendo quatro tratamentos (253, 759, 1265 e 1748 UF (unidade de fitase) /kg) e três repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de níveis de inclusão da enzima fitase nas dietas associados aos tecidos dos ossos, fígado, coração, rins e músculos. Os leitões foram mantidos em gaiolas metabólicas por um período de dez dias de adaptação e sete dias de coletas de sangue. No primeiro dia de coleta, foram injetados em cada animal, por via endovenosa, 7,4 MBq de 32P, como indicador. No final do período experimental os animais foram sacrificados e amostras dos tecidos coletadas. Os níveis da enzima fitase não interferiram na retenção de 32P nos tecidos e nas trocas plasmáticas dos mesmos. A ação da enzima fitase ocorreu, principalmente, na concentração de P nos rins, sendo sua atuação mais efetiva nos níveis entre 253 e 759 UF/kg de ração; o maior intercâmbio do fósforo em suínos alimentados com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de fitase ocorreu entre os rins e o plasma.

The research was carried out to study the kinetic of P in tissues of pigs fed rations containing organic P with the addition of different levels of phytase enzyme, using the 32P as a metabolic tracer. Twelve crossbred barrow with 31,68± 1,62kg were divided in a completely randomized design in a split plot arrangement, with four treatments (253, 749, 1265 and 1748 PU (phytase unit)/kg) and three repetitions. Treatments formed the parcels and tissues (bones, liver, heart, kidneys and muscles) the by-parcels. All pigs were kept in a metabolic cage for a seven-day period for sample collection. At the first day of the collection period, each animal was injected intravenously with 7.4 MBq of 32P. On the seventh day all animals were slaughtered and samples of tissues were collected. The phytase enzyme affected the concentration of P in kidney at the levels of 253 and 759 PU/kg.
