Abstract This study evaluated the effects of broiler age (A) and levels of replacement (L) of control diet (CD) on the utilization of energy and nutrients of whole corn germ. 720 one-day-old broilers (b) were allocated at completely randomized design to six treatments and six replicates, in three assays: pre-starter (1-8 days, 10 b/cage), starter (15-22 days, 6 b/cage), and grower (28-35 days, 4 b/cage) phases. The treatments were: CD and four test diets (L): 100, 150, 200, 250, or 300 g kg-1 of the CD replaced by WCG levels. The data were adjusted to the response surface model. The stationary points for apparent energy metabolizable (AME) and AME corrected for nitrogen balance (AMEn) were: 4173 and 3591 kcal kg-1, respectively, and coefficients of gross energy (AMCGE), crude protein (AMCCP), dry matter (AMCDM), and ether extract (AMCEE) were: 49.3, 40.4, 72.6, and 61.3%, respectively; and Ileal digestibility coefficient of crude protein (IDCCP), dry matter (IDCDM), digestibility crude protein values (DCP), and digestibility dry matter value (DDM) were: 78.0, 57.96, 8.50, and 56.17%, respectively. The EP for AMEn was at 18 days of age, 28 g kg-1 WCG. There was a correlation between A and L on digestibility and metabolisability of nutrient’s WCG. Abstract The demand for less hazardous and environmentally friendly surface disinfectants is growing and essential oils may be efficient alternatives. Vapor phase assay is a promising technique which explore the volatility of essential oils for determining the antimicrobial activity. In this study, we modified the conditions of the inverted Petri dish technique to evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). As a proof of concept, the antimicrobial activity of Hesperozygis myrtoides essential oil (HM) was studied for the first time in the vapor phase. According to the established protocol the oil volatilization dynamics was used to determine the major compounds in the vapor phase. After 270 min, the relative percentage was like that observed in the crude oil analysis. The HM was also evaluated for safety (IC50=921.2 µg ml-1), being considered safe in case of acute oral exposure. The oil vapors completely inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (MIC=0.39 mg l-1), Candida albicans (MIC=0.83 mg l-1), Aspergillus brasiliensis (MIC=378 mg l-1) and Bacillus subtilis (MIC=704.8 mg l-1). BACKGROUND Strigomonas culicis is a monoxenic trypanosomatid parasite of insects that naturally contains an endosymbiotic bacterium. The aposymbiotic strain can be obtained, making this strain a model for evolutive research about organelle origins. In addition, S. culicis contains homologues of virulence factors of pathogenic trypanosomatids, which functions are waiting for further analysis. In this sense, the publication of S. culicis proteome makes feasible additional investigations regarding the differential expression of peptidases from the wild-type (WT) and the aposymbiotic (APO) strains. OBJECTIVES Here, we analysed two proteomic data from S. culicis WT and APO strains screening for peptidases differentially expressed and assessed the differential expression of cysteine and metallopeptidases. METHODS A comparative proteomic screening between WT and APO identified 43 modulated peptidases. FINDINGS Cysteine and metallopeptidases, such as calpains and GP63, were the major classes, highlighting their significance. GP63 exhibited an increased proteolysis in a specific metallopeptidase substrate, an up-modulation gene expression in RT-PCR, and a higher protein identification by flow cytometry in the aposymbiotic strain. Notwithstanding, the wild-type strain showed enhanced cysteine peptidase activity. Resumo: O objetivo foi descrever a gravidade das complicações relacionadas ao aborto, os fatores relacionados às complicações, os tipos de tratamento e a experiência de atendimento no Brasil. Foi realizado um estudo transversal em vinte hospitais (dez no Distrito Federal, três em Rondônia e sete no Maranhão). Durante três meses, todos os dados de todas as mulheres tratadas por aborto/aborto espontâneo foram coletados. A gravidade das complicações foi definida de acordo com os critérios da Organização Mundial da Saúde. As mulheres com hemorragia, infecção ou lesão de órgãos foram convidadas a responder a uma entrevista sobre a experiência do atendimento. A análise estatística foi realizada usando o teste de qui-quadrado e modelos de regressão de Poisson. Entre as 1.683 mulheres incluídas, 82,5% tiveram complicações leves, 13,6% tiveram complicações moderadas, 3,2% tiveram condições potencialmente ameaçadoras à vida (PLTC, acrônimo em inglês) e 0,7% tiveram resultados maternos graves (SMO, acrônimo em inglês). A maioria das mulheres (94,2%) precisou de esvaziamento uterino. Entre elas, 91,5% precisaram de esvaziamento cirúrgico (com ou sem uso de uterotônicos) e 8,5% usaram apenas uterotônicos. O método de esvaziamento cirúrgico mais frequente foi a curetagem (66,9%), seguido pela aspiração manual a vácuo (32,3%). Os fatores associados à PLTC/SMO vs. complicações leves foram ter idade gestacional ≥ 13 semanas (razão de prevalência - RP = 3,09; intevalo de 95% de confiança - IC95%: 1,42-6,72), ter sido tratado no Maranhão (RP = 0,27; IC95%: 0,12-0,63) e em Rondônia (RP = 0,64; IC95%: 0,20-0,99). Os fatores associados às complicações moderadas vs. leves foram expulsão dos produtos da concepção antes da chegada ao serviço de saúde (RP = 2,55; IC95%: 1,64-3,96) e ter sido tratado no Maranhão (RP = 0,58; IC95%: 0,38-0,87). A maioria das mulheres que responderam à entrevista foi tratada com gentileza (95,6%), no entanto, 66,7% se sentiram estressadas e 10,1% relataram que suas preferências não foram respeitadas durante a internação. Nove em cada dez mulheres atendidas em hospitais públicos brasileiros devido a complicações relacionadas ao aborto são submetidas a algum procedimento cirúrgico, sendo o mais comum a curetagem uterina. Aproximadamente quatro em cada 100 mulheres apresentam complicações graves. É fundamental garantir o fornecimento de equipamentos para aspiração manual a vácuo e incentivar programas de educação médica continuada para aumentar a conscientização dos profissionais de saúde sobre tratamentos mais seguros para evacuação uterina.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe the severity of abortion-related complications, factors associated with complications, the types of management and the experience of care in Brazil. A cross-sectional study in twenty hospitals (10 in Federal District, 3 in Rondônia and 7 in Maranhão). For 3 months, all women treated for abortion/miscarriage had their data collected. The severity of complications was defined according to World Health Organization criteria. Women with hemorrhage, infection or organs injury were invited to answer an interview about experience of care. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square test and Poisson regression models. Among 1,683 women included, 82.5% had mild complications, 13.6% had moderate complications, 3.2% had potentially life-threatening conditions (PLTC) and 0.7% had severe maternal outcomes (SMO). Most women (94.2%) required uterine evacuation. Among these, 91.5% required surgical evacuation (with or without the use of uterotonics) and 8.5% used only uterotonics. The most frequent surgical evacuation method was curettage (66.9%), followed by manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) (32.3%). Factors associated with PLTC/SMO vs mild complications were having a gestational age ≥ 13 weeks (pravlence ratio - PR = 3.09; 95% confidence interval - 95%CI: 1.42-6.72), having been treated in Maranhão (PR = 0.27; 95%CI: 0.12-0.63) and in Rondônia (PR = 0.64; 95%CI: 0.20-0.99). Factors associated with moderate vs. mild complications were expulsion of products of conception before arrival to health facility (PR = 2.55; 95%CI: 1.64-3.96) and having been treated in Maranhão (PR = 0.58; 95%CI: 0.38-0.87). Most women who responded to the interview were treated kindly (95.6%), however, 66.7% felt stressed and 10.1% reported that their preferences were not respected during hospitalization. Nine out of ten women treated in Brazilian public hospitals due to abortion-related complications undergo some surgical procedure, the most common of which is uterine curettage. Approximately four in every hundred women experience severe complications. It is essential to ensure the supply of equipment for MVA and to encourage continuing medical education programs to increase the awareness of healthcare professionals about safer treatments for uterine evacuation.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar o desempenho do diagrama de desvio fonatório e de suas medidas no monitoramento da qualidade da voz, pré e pós exercício vocal, em indivíduos com Doença de Parkinson. Método Estudo retrospectivo e documental. Utilizou-se uma amostra de 30 sujeitos, sendo 50% do sexo masculino, com média de idade de 62,13 ± 9,05 anos. Foram analisados os resultados do diagrama de desvio fonatório, nos momentos pré e pós exercício vocal com a técnica de empuxo associada aos sons plosivos, considerando-se a área, densidade, forma e localização do diagrama nos quadrantes. Para fins de comparação, os parâmetros acústicos de jitter, shimmer, glottal to noise excitation ratio e resultados da análise perceptivo-auditiva, realizada em pesquisa anterior, também foram considerados, nos momentos pré e pós-técnica. Resultados A despeito de não ocorrer diferença na distribuição das amostras no diagrama, após realização da técnica vocal, foi identificada, na análise qualitativa visual, mudança no deslocamento do diagrama em direção à área de normalidade e houve associação entre o grau geral do desvio vocal da análise perceptivoauditiva e a área do diagrama. Houve melhora nos valores de shimmer, após a técnica vocal. Conclusão O deslocamento do diagrama de desvio fonatório em direção à área de normalidade corroborou os resultados em relação ao grau geral de disfonia avaliado pela análise perceptivoauditiva e os resultados de shimmer, após a técnica vocal empregada. ABSTRACT Purpose To assess the performance of the phonatory deviation diagram and its measurements in monitoring voice quality before and after voice exercise in individuals with Parkinson's Disease. Methods Retrospective and documentary study. A sample of 30 subjects was used, 50% male, with a mean age of 62.13 ± 9.05 years. The results of the phonatory deviation diagram were analyzed, in the moments before and after vocal exercise with the pushing technique associated with plosive sounds, considering the area, density, shape and location of the diagram in the quadrants. For comparison purposes, the acoustic parameters of jitter, shimmer, glottal to noise excitation ratio and results of the auditory-perceptual analysis, carried out in previous research, were also considered, in the pre- and post-technical moments. Results Despite the fact that there was no difference in the distribution of samples in the diagram, after performing the vocal technique, a change in the displacement of the diagram towards the area of normality was identified in the visual qualitative analysis, and there was an association between the general degree of vocal deviation in the analysis auditory perception and the area of the diagram. There was an improvement in the shimmer values after the vocal technique. Conclusion The displacement of the phonatory deviation diagram towards the area of normality corroborated the results in relation to the general degree of dysphonia, evaluated by the auditory-perceptual analysis and the shimmer results, after the vocal technique. ABSTRACT This study describes the laboratory investigation of two acute Chagas disease outbreaks that occurred in the riverside communities of Marimarituba and Cachoeira do Arua, in the Santarem municipality, Para State, located in the Northern region of Brazil, and occurred in March 2016 and August 2017, respectively. The generation of data regarding the diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi parasites circulating in the Amazon region is key for understanding the emergence and expansion of Chagas disease. This study aimed to identify T. cruzi Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) involved in two outbreaks of acute Chagas disease (ACD) directly from the patient’s biological sample. Nested and multiplex PCR targeting the 24Sα (rRNA) and mini-exon genes, respectively, were used to identify T. cruzi DTU in blood samples from patients diagnosed with ACD. The samples with positive cPCR were submitted for analysis for T. cruzi DTUs, which included 13 samples from the patients with ACD by oral transmission and two samples collected from two newborns of two women with ACD, from Marimarituba and Cachoeira do Arua. The samples were classified as T. cruzi TcIV, from Marimarituba’s outbreak, and T. cruzi TcI, from Cachoeira do Arua’s outbreak. The molecular identification of T. cruzi may increase understanding of the role of this parasite in Chagas disease’s emergence within the Amazon region, contributing to the improvement of the management of this important, but also neglected, disease. ABSTRACT Determining the bioactivity of essential oils extracted from plants is crucial for the development of alternatives for controlling insect pests in stored grains. This study aimed to investigate the bioactivity of Piper aduncum L. essential oil for the control of Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Cucujidae). Bioassays were conducted to determine the oil toxicity, sublethal effects, attractiveness and flight initiation behavior. Toxicity tests were carried out to determine the lethal concentrations for 50 and 95 % of the insects (LC50 and LC95). Tests were also performed with sublethal exposures to C. ferrurineus, S. oryzae and S. zeamais, using their respective LC5 values (0.0002, 0.097 and 0.11 µL cm-2), to investigate effects on the attraction or repellency activity, as well as flight tests. C. ferrugineus showed greater LC50 (0.0005 µL cm-2) and LC95 (0.0012 µL cm-2) susceptibility, in relation to S. oryzae LC50 (0.35 µL cm-2) and LC95 (1.26 µL cm-2), and S. zeamais LC50 (0.39 µL cm-2) and LC95 (1.40 µL cm-2). The exposure to the sublethal LC5 concentration influenced the behavioral responses of attractiveness/repellency and flight activity. RESUMO Determinar a bioatividade de óleos essenciais extraídos de plantas é primordial para o desenvolvimento de alternativas de controle de insetos-praga em grãos armazenados. Objetivou-se investigar a bioatividade do óleo essencial de Piper aduncum L. para o controle de Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) e Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Cucujidae). Foram realizados bioensaios para determinar a toxicidade do óleo, efeitos subletais, comportamento de atratividade e iniciação de voo. Testes de toxicidade foram realizados, determinando-se as concentrações letais para 50 e 95 % dos insetos (CL50 e CL95). Também foram realizados testes com exposições subletais para C. ferrurineus, S. oryzae e S. zeamais, utilizando-se as suas respectivas CL5 (0,0002; 0,097; e 0,11 µL cm-2), para averiguar efeitos na atividade de atração ou repelência, e testes de voo. C. ferrugineus apresentou maior susceptibilidade CL50 (0,0005 µL cm-2) e CL95 (0,0012 µL cm-2), em relação a S. oryzae CL50 (0,35 µL cm-2) e CL95 (1,26 µL cm-2) e S. zeamais CL50 (0,39 µL cm-2) e CL95 (1,40 µL cm-2). A exposição à concentração subletal CL5 influenciou nas respostas comportamentais de atratividade/repelência e atividade de voo das espécies. Resumo Introdução: Estudos que avaliaram o manejo do refluxo laringofaríngeo por otorrinolaringologistas mostraram uma importante heterogeneidade em relação à definição, diagnóstico e tratamento, o que leva a discrepâncias no tratamento do paciente. Faltam informações sobre o conhecimento e as práticas atuais dos otorrinolaringologistas brasileiros sobre o refluxo laringofaríngeo. Objetivo: Investigar as tendências no manejo da doença do refluxo laringofaríngeo entre os otorrinolaringologistas brasileiros. Método: O questionário foi enviado por e-mail aos membros da Associação Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia-Cirurgia de Cabeça e Pescoço. Esta pesquisa foi inicialmente conduzida pelo LPR Study Group of Young Otolaryngologists da International Federation of Otolaryngological Societies. Resultados: De acordo com os respondentes da pesquisa, a prevalência de refluxo laringofaríngeo foi estimada em 26,8% dos pacientes consultados e os sintomas mais comuns foram sensação de globus, pigarro, tosse e refluxo de ácido estomacal. Obstrução nasal, disfunção da trompa de Eustáquio, otite média aguda e crônica, nódulos nas pregas vocais e hemorragia foram considerados como não associados ao refluxo laringofaríngeo pela maioria dos respondentes. Cerca de 2/3 dos otorrinolaringologistas brasileiros basearam o diagnóstico de refluxo laringofaríngeo na avaliação dos sintomas e achados e na resposta positiva a testes terapêuticos empíricos. Inibidores de bomba de prótons uma ou duas vezes ao dia foi o esquema terapêutico mais usado. Somente 21,4% dos otorrinolaringologistas brasileiros já ouviram falar sobre refluxo laringofaríngeo não ácido e misto e o conhecimento sobre a utilidade do monitoramento de pH por impedância intraluminal multicanal foi mínimo; 30,5% dos respondentes não se consideraram tão bem informados sobre o refluxo laringofaríngeo. Conclusão: Embora os sintomas relacionados ao refluxo laringofaríngeo e as principais abordagens diagnósticas e terapêuticas referidas pelos otorrinolaringologistas brasileiros sejam consistentes com a literatura, a pesquisa identificou algumas limitações, como o conhecimento insuficiente do papel do refluxo laringofaríngeo em diversas condições otorrinolaringológicas e da possibilidade de refluxo não ácido ou misto em casos refratários. Estudos futuros são necessários para estabelecer recomendações internacionais para o manejo de doença do refluxo laringofaríngeo.

Abstract Introduction: Studies assessing the management of laryngopharyngeal reflux by otolaryngologists have reported an important heterogeneity regarding the definition, diagnosis, and treatment, which leads to discrepancies in the management of the patient. Information about the current knowledge and practices of Brazilian otolaryngologists in laryngopharyngeal reflux is lacking. Objective: To investigate the trends in management of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease among Brazilian otolaryngologists. Methods: A survey was sent by email to the members of the Brazilian Association of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery. This survey has initially been conducted by the laryngopharyngeal reflux study group of young otolaryngologists of the International Federation of Otolaryngological Societies. Results: According to the survey responders, the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux was estimated to be 26.8% of patients consulting in otolaryngology and the most common symptoms were globus sensation, throat clearing, cough and stomach acid reflux. Nasal obstruction, Eustachian tube dysfunction, acute and chronic otitis media, vocal fold nodules and hemorrhage were considered not associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux by the majority of responders. About 2/3 of Brazilian otolaryngologists based the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux on the assessment of both symptoms and findings and a positive response to empiric therapeutic trials. Proton pump inhibitor utilized once or twice daily, was the most commonly used therapeutic scheme. Only 21.4% of Brazilian otolaryngologists have heard about nonacid and mixed laryngopharyngeal reflux and the awareness about the usefulness of multichannel intraluminal impedance pH monitoring (MII-pH) was minimal; 30.5% of responders did not consider themselves as well-informed about laryngopharyngeal reflux. Conclusion: Although the laryngopharyngeal reflux-related symptoms, main diagnostic and treatment approaches referred by Brazilian otolaryngologists are consistent with the literature, the survey identified some limitations, such as the insufficient awareness of the role of laryngopharyngeal reflux in many otolaryngological conditions and of the possibility of non-acid or mixed reflux in refractory cases. Future studies are needed to establish international recommendations for the management of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease.

The aim of this work was to develop a method using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-HG-AFS) for the determination and speciation analysis of the inorganic and organic species of arsenic found most often in rice samples: As(V), As(III), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). The best chromatographic resolution was obtained using pH 6.2, a phosphate buffer mobile phase concentration of 20 mmol L-1 and flow rate of 0.57 mL min-1, HCl concentration of 5.55% (v/v), and NaBH4 concentration of 0.90% (w/v). The accuracy of the method was confirmed by the low relative error values obtained for analysis of a certified reference material (NIST 1568b): 6.63% (total inorganic As), 3.44% (DMA), 0% (MMA), and 0.53% (total As). In recovery tests, the proposed method achieved satisfactory recoveries in the range 86-110%.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and its association with functionality, lifestyle, biomarkers, and morbidities in older adults. METHODS: The study analyzed cross-sectional data from 270 older adults who participated in phase III of the Frailty in Brazilian Older People Study (Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros—Rio de Janeiro, FIBRA-RJ study-2013). They took part in a home interview surveying socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, morbidities, and functional data. Blood was collected for biochemical marker analysis and participants’ body composition was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. For women, the diagnosis of sarcopenic obesity was defined at a body fat percentage ≥38% and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMMI) <5.45 kg/m2. For men, a fat percentage ≥27% and ASMMI <7.26 kg/m2 was defined as sarcopenic obesity. Multivariate analysis was performed using a multinomial regression model (95% confidence intervals), with sarcopenic obesity as the outcome. RESULTS: The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was 29.3%. In the final fitted model, the variables that displayed statistically significant association with sarcopenic obesity were lower gait speed, self-reported medical diagnosis of arthrosis or arthritis, and high levels of glycemia. CONCLUSION: The study showed a high prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in non-institutionalized older adults in Brazil. The finding that this condition was associated with modifiable risk factors may provide insights into measures directed at prevention and reduction of the risk of sarcopenic obesity in this population subgroup.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do óleo essencial de Croton pulegiodorus Baill sobre oito populações de Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky com diferentes padrões de susceptibilidade a inseticidas sintéticos. As populações foram obtidas de Sete Lagoas-MG, Jacarezinho-PR, Bom Conselho-PE, Garanhuns-PE, Jupi-PE, Lajedo-PE, São João-PE e Serra Talhada-PE. Para estimar as concentrações letais (CL50 e CL90) do óleo para cada população, foram realizados testes de fumigação. A susceptibilidade de S. zeamais ao óleo essencial variou entre as populações. Garanhuns e Bom Conselho foram considerados padrões de susceptibilidade, apresentando as menores CL50 (3,40 μL L-1 de ar) e CL90 (9,60 μL L-1 de ar) para C. pulegiodorus. A população de Jupi apresentou as maiores CL50 (14,49 μL L-1 de ar) e CL90 (19,60 μL L-1 de ar) para C. pulegiodorus. A razão de resistência variou de 1,84 vezes para população de São João a 4,26 vezes para a população de Jupi. Assim, o óleo essencial de C. pulegiodorus apresentou efeito fumigante causando mortalidade em todas as populações de S. zeamais utilizadas.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to assess the effects of the essential oil of Croton pulegiodorus Baill on eight populations of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky with different patterns of susceptibility to synthetic insecticides. Populations of S. zeamais were obtained from Sete Lagoas-MG, Jacarezinho-PR, Bom Conselho-PE, Garanhuns-PE, Jupi-PE, Lajedo-PE, São João-PE and Serra Talhada-PE. To estimate the lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) of oil for each population, fumigation tests were performed. The susceptibility of S. zeamais to the essential oil varied among populations. Garanhuns and Bom Conselho was considered the susceptibility patterns, presenting the lowest LC50 (3.40 μL L-1 of air) and LC90 (9.60 μL L-1 of air) for the essential oil, respectively. The population from Jupi exhibited the highest LC50 (14.49 μL L-1 of air) and LC90 (19.60 μL L-1 of air) for C. pulegiodorus. The resistance ratio ranged from 1.84 for the São João to 4.26 for the Jupi population. Thus, the essential oil of C. pulegiodorus showed fumigant activity, causing mortality in all S. zeamais populations used.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate somatic embryogenesis in juvenile explants of the THB papaya cultivar. Apical shoots and cotyledonary leaves were inoculated in an induction medium composed of different concentrations of 2,4-D (6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 µM) or 4-CPA (19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 µM). The embryogenic calluses were transferred to a maturation medium for 30 days. Histological analysis were done during the induction and scanning electron microscopy after maturing. For both types of auxin, embryogenesis was achieved at higher frequencies with cotyledonary leaves incubated in induction medium than with apical shoots; except for callogenesis. The early-stage embryos (e.g., globular or heart-shape) predominated. Among the auxins, best results were observed in cotyledonary leaves induced with 4-CPA (25 µM). Histological analyses of the cotyledonary leaf-derived calluses confirmed that the somatic embryos (SEs) formed from parenchyma cells, predominantly differentiated via indirect and multicellular origin and infrequently via synchronized embryogenesis. The secondary embryogenesis was observed during induction and maturation phases in papaya THB cultivar. The combination of ABA (0.5 µM) and AC (15 g L-1) in maturation medium resulted in the highest somatic embryogenesis induction frequency (70 SEs callus-1) and the lowest percentage of early germination (4%).

Existem relativamente poucos estudos sobre a influência das características de vizinhança sobre a auto-avaliação da saúde. Foi aplicada uma abordagem multinível com modelos hierárquicos para analisar a relação entre as características socioeconômicas de 621 vizinhanças (nível 2) da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, e a auto-avaliação da saúde de 3.054 servidores universitários (nível 1) da linha de base do Estudo Pró-Saúde. As vizinhanças foram criadas pela aplicação do algoritmo SKATER (Spatial ‘K’luster Analysis by Tree Edge Removal) aos setores censitários, de acordo com quatro indicadores e uma população mínima de 5 mil habitantes. Depois de ajustar para fatores individuais (renda per capita, escolaridade, idade, sexo, raça/cor, comportamentos relacionados à saúde e doenças crônicas), houve uma associação significativa entre renda baixa e número maior de pessoas por domicílio na vizinhança e autoavaliação da saúde “ruim”. Os residentes de vizinhanças de renda média apresentaram probabilidade 34% maior de avaliar a própria saúde como “ruim”. Aqueles que viviam em vizinhanças com maior número médio de pessoas por domicílio mostraram uma probabilidade 50% maior de autoavaliação da saúde “ruim”. Para além de fatores individuais, o contexto de vizinhança influencia a autoavaliação da saúde. Piores condições socioeconômicas da vizinhança afetam negativamente a saúde, que por sua vez aumenta as chances de autoavaliação da saúde “ruim”.

The influence of neighborhood characteristics on self-rated health has been little studied. A multilevel approach using hierarchical models was applied to analyze the relationship between the socioeconomic characteristics in 621 neighborhoods (level 2) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the self-rated health of 3,054 university employees (level 1) from the baseline of the Pró-Saúde Study. Neighborhoods were created using the SKATER algorithm (Spatial ‘K’luster Analysis by Tree Edge Removal) to cluster census tracts according to four indicators and a minimum population of 5,000 people. After adjustment for individual factors (per capita income, schooling, age, sex, ethnicity, health-related behavior and chronic diseases), low level of neighborhood income and higher numbers of members per household were significantly associated with poor self-rated health. Participants living in medium income-level neighborhoods were 34% more likely to self-rate their health as being poor. Those living in areas with a higher density of members per household were 50% more likely to present poor self-rated health. Neighborhood context influences self-rated health, beyond the effect of individual factors. Worsening neighborhood socioeconomic conditions affect health adversely, which in turn increasing the chance of poor self-rated health.

La influencia de las características del vecindario en la salud autoevaluada se ha estudiado escasamente. Se aplicó un análisis multinivel usando modelos jerárquicos para analizar la relación entre las características socioeconómicas en 621 vecindarios (nivel 2), dentro de la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, Brasil, y la salud autoevaluada de 3.054 empleados universitarios (nivel 1), procedentes de la base de referencia del Estudio Pró-Saúde. Se crearon vecindarios con el uso del algoritmo SKATER (Spatial ‘K’luster Analysis by Tree Edge Removal), con el fin de agrupar secciones del censo, de acuerdo con cuatro indicadores y una población mínima de 5.000 personas. Tras el ajuste por factores individuales (ingresos per cápita, escolarización, edad, sexo, etnia, comportamiento informado de salud y enfermedades crónicas), el bajo nivel de ingresos en el vecindario y el alto número de miembros por hogar estuvieron significativamente asociados a un escasa salud autoevaluada. Los participantes que vivían en vecindarios con un nivel de ingresos medios tuvieron una probabilidad un 34% mayor de autoevaluar su salud más bien como mala. Quienes estaban viviendo en vecindarios con una densidad más alta de miembros por vivienda tuvieron una probabilidad de un 50% mayor de presentar una salud autoevaluada mala. El contexto del vecindario influencia la salud autoevaluada, además del efecto de los factores individuales. Un empeoramiento de las condiciones socioeconómicas en el vecindario afecta adversamente a la salud, que a su vez aumenta la oportunidad de una salud autoevaluada como mala.

Through dereplication strategies using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and ultra fast liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-MS/MS), the ethanol extract from Psycotria nemorosa leaves (Rubiaceae) showed to be composed of: cinnamic acid, dihydroactinidiolide, 4-hydroxy-β-ionone, phytol, isophytol, 4,8,12,16-tetramethylheptadecan-4-olide, lupeol, a mixture of α/β-amyrin, the keto and acetylated derivatives, besides stigmast-4-en-3-one, campesterol, stigmasterol and γ-sitosterol by GC-MS. Likewise, by UFLC-MS/MS, the main compounds identified were: butin, resveratrol, rutin, kaempferol 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, deacetylasperuloside, epiloganin, hordenine, strictosidine, N-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline and N-formyl-tryptamine. The antinociceptive activity of the crude extract ant its fractions was reported.
