ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the possible differences among the hearing of farmers and their families when compared to the population not exposed to pesticides. Methods Cross-sectional study with 70 smallholder family farmers (research group), with the mean age of 39.7 years, of both sexes and a mean of 23.7 years of exposure to pesticides. We included a control group with 71 participants of both sexes with the mean age of 39.5 years, not exposed to either noise or chemical substances, to compare the results. In stage 1, both groups were submitted to conventional and high-frequency audiometry, and acoustic immittance. In stage 2, only people with normal hearing were submitted to the evoked otoacoustic emissions and suppression effect on transient otoacoustic emissions. Results Significant differences were observed between the groups in the conventional pure-tone and in the high-frequency audiometry, as well as in the acoustic reflex. The most affected frequencies in the conventional pure-tone audiometry ranged from 3 to 6 kHz and, in the high-frequency audiometry, from 9000 to 11200 Hz. As for the transient otoacoustic emissions, the worse suppression effect results were found in the research group. Conclusion There were differences among the hearing of family farmers and the control group. The conventional auditory thresholds are related to the group, age and sex. Farming is associated with impairments in the basal region of the cochlea, absence of acoustic reflex, reduced signal-to-noise ratio of the transient otoacoustic emissions, and dysfunction in the olivocochlear efferents of the auditory system.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar as possíveis diferenças na audição de agricultores e suas famílias em comparação com população não exposta aos agrotóxicos. Método Estudo transversal, com 70 participantes (grupo pesquisa), com média de idade de 39,7 anos, de ambos os sexos, proprietários de pequenos estabelecimentos agrícolas vinculados a agricultura familiar e tempo de exposição médio aos agrotóxicos de 23,7 anos. Um grupo controle com 71 participantes de ambos os sexos, sem exposição a ruído e agentes químicos, com idade média de 39,5 anos, foi incluído para a comparação dos resultados. Na etapa 1, ambos os grupos foram submetidos a audiometria convencional e de altas frequências e imitanciometria. Na etapa 2, somente os normoouvintes foram submetidos as emissões otoacústicas evocadas e efeito de supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes. Resultados Observou-se diferenças significativas entre os grupos para audiometria tonal convencional e de altas frequências, e no reflexo acústico. As frequências mais afetadas na audiometria tonal convencional foram 3 a 6kHz e na audiometria de altas frequências foram as frequências de 9.000 e 11.200 Hz. Nas emissões otoacusticas transientes, observou-se no efeito de supressão piores resultados no grupo de pesquisa. Conclusão Conclui-se que houve diferenças na audição dos agricultores familiares em comparação com o grupo controle. Os limiares auditivos convencionais estão relacionados em função do grupo, idade e gênero. O trabalho na agricultura está associado com o comprometimento na região basal da cóclea, à ausência de reflexo acústico, à redução da relação sinal/ruído das emissões otoacústicas transientes e à disfunção do sistema auditivo eferente olivococlear.

RESUMO O objetivo desse relato de casos clínicos é apresentar quatro casos de fumicultores com perda auditiva devida à exposição laboral a agrotóxicos. Trata-se de um estudo de caso qualitativo, incluindo 3 casos de perda auditiva sensório-neural com nexo causal (Casos 1, 2 e 4) e um caso (Caso 3) de perda auditiva sensório-neural compatível com ototoxidade por agrotóxicos, com nexo baseado, sobretudo, nos transtornos neuropsiquiátricos menores. A casuística foi constituída por trabalhadores rurais com problemas de saúde, em idade produtiva, com início de atividade laboral precoce, expostos a múltiplos agrotóxicos, incluindo os organofosforados. Os sintomas auditivos e neurovegetativos relatados foram: desconforto a sons (n=2), dificuldade de compreender a fala (n=3), tontura (n=2) e desequilíbrio (n=2). A audiometria tonal revelou perda auditiva sensório-neural em uma ou mais frequências altas e um dos casos apresentou alteração no Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Tronco Encefálico. Foi evidenciada associação entre perda auditiva e o trabalho nos fumicultores expostos a agrotóxicos, com danos auditivos periféricos nos quatro casos e dano central em um dos casos, demonstrando a necessidade da avaliação audiológica completa para populações expostas a agrotóxicos.

ABSTRACT The Purpose of this case report is to present four cases of tobacco growers with hearing loss due to occupational exposure to pesticides. A qualitative case study comprising three cases of sensorineural hearing loss with causal nexus (Cases 1, 2 and 4), and one (Case 3) of sensorineural hearing loss compatible with ototoxicity by pesticides, with causal nexus mainly based on minor neuropsychiatric disorders. The sample was composed of rural workers with health problems, in working age, having started working early in life, exposed to various pesticides, including organophosphates. The auditory and neurovegetative symptoms reported were noise discomfort (n = 2), speech perception difficulty (n = 3), dizziness (n = 2), and imbalance (n = 2). The pure-tone audiometry revealed a sensorineural hearing loss in one or more high frequencies, and one of the cases presented alteration in the brainstem auditory evoked potentials. There is evidence, in this study, of an association between hearing loss and work in tobacco growers exposed to pesticides, with peripheral auditory damage in four cases, and central damage in one of them. Thus, the need for a complete audiological evaluation of pesticide-exposed populations is highlighted.

<sec><title>Introduction</title><p> High-level noise exposure in dentists' workplaces may cause damages to the auditory systems. High-frequency audiometry is an important tool in the investigation in the early diagnosis of hearing loss.</p></sec><sec><title>Objectives</title><p> To analyze the auditory thresholds at frequencies from 500 to 16,000 Hz of dentists in the city of Curitiba.</p></sec><sec><title>Methods</title><p> This historic cohort study retrospectively tested hearing thresholds from 500 to 16,000 Hz with a group of dentists from Curitiba, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Eighty subjects participated in the study, separated into a dentist group and a control group, with the same age range and gender across groups but with no history of occupational exposure to high levels of sound pressure in the control group. Subjects were tested with conventional audiometry and high-frequency audiometry and answered a questionnaire about exposure to noise.</p></sec><sec><title>Results</title><p> Results showed that 81% of dentists did not receive any information regarding noise at university; 6 (15% ) dentists had sensorineural hearing impairment; significant differences were observed between the groups only at frequencies of 500 Hz and 1,000, 6,000 and 8,000 Hz in the right ear. There was no significant difference between the groups after analysis of mean hearing thresholds of high frequencies with the average hearing thresholds in conventional frequencies; subjects who had been working as dentists for longer than 10 years had worse tonal hearing thresholds at high frequencies.</p></sec><sec><title>Conclusions</title><p> In this study, we observed that dentists are at risk for the development of sensorineural hearing loss especially after 10 years of service.</p></sec>

Introduction Researchers studying the hearing health of forestry workers have revealed the presence of a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in this population and have concluded that the vibration of the equipment, the carbon monoxide released by motors, and pesticides might also contribute to NIHL. Objective To analyze the noise exposure in the Brazilian forestry industry workers and the effects on hearing. Methods The study sample comprised 109 employees of a company that specialized in reforestation. Their participants' mean age was 35.5 years (21 to 54 years), mean tenure at the company was 3.9 years (1 to 13 years), and mean total duration of noise exposure was 12.3 years (1 to 30 years). The existing documentation reporting on the jobs risk analysis was examined, noise level was measured, and pure tone audiometry was performed in all participants. Participants were divided into three groups according to their noise exposure levels in their current job. Results Of the participants who were exposed to noise levels less than 85 dBA (decibels with A-weighting filter), 23.8% had hearing loss, and 5.5% of the participants who were exposed to noise ranging from 85 to 89.9 dBA and 11% of the participants who were exposed to noise greater than 90 dBA had audiogram results suggestive of NIHL. Conclusion The implementation of a hearing loss prevention program tailored to forestry workers is needed.

Introduction The presence of noise in our society has attracted the attention of health professionals, including speech-language pathologists, who have been charged along with educators with developing hearing conservation programs in schools. Objective To describe the results of three strategies for awareness and hearing preservation in first to fourth grades in public elementary schools. Methods The level of environmental noise in classrooms was assessed, and 638 elementary school students from first to fourth grades, 5 to 10 years of age, were audiologically evaluated. After the evaluations, educational activities were presented to children and educators. Results The noise level in the classroom ranged from 71.8 to 94.8 A-weighted decibels. The environment of the classroom was found to promote sound reverberation, which hinders communication. Thirty-two students (5.1%) presented hearing alterations. Conclusion The application of strategies for a hearing conservation program at the school showed that noise is present in the room, and hearing loss, sometimes silent, affects schoolchildren. Students and teachers were aware that hearing problems can be prevented. Avoiding exposure to noise and improving the acoustics in classrooms are essential.

Introduction Industry workers are exposed to different environmental risk agents that, when combined, may potentiate risks to hearing. Objective To evaluate the effects of the combined exposure to noise and solvents on hearing in workers. Methods A transversal retrospective cohort study was performed through documentary analysis of an industry. The sample (n = 198) was divided into four groups: the noise group (NG), exposed only to noise; the noise and solvents group (NSG), exposed to noise and solvents; the noise control group and noise and solvents control group (CNS), no exposure. Results The NG showed 16.66% of cases suggestive of bilateral noise-induced hearing loss and NSG showed 5.26%. The NG and NSG had worse thresholds than their respective control groups. Females were less susceptible to noise than males; however, when simultaneously exposed to solvents, hearing was affected in a similar way, resulting in significant differences (p < 0.05). The 40- to 49-year-old age group was significantly worse (p < 0.05) in the auditory thresholds in the NSG compared with the CNS. Conclusion The results observed in this study indicate that simultaneous exposure to noise and solvents can damage the peripheral auditory system.

INTRODUÇÃO: Os odontólogos estão expostos ao ruído em seu local de trabalho, sendo susceptíveis para o desenvolvimento de perda auditiva sensorioneurais com características de induzida por ruído. OBJETIVO: Aanalisar os limiares auditivos de odontólogos caracterizando-os em relação ao gênero, idade e tempo de serviço. MÉTODO: A forma do estudo é corte transversal (ou seccional), prospectivo, que analisou os limiares auditivos de 115 odontólogos, através de audiometria tonal de 500Hz a 8000Hz por via aérea e via óssea. Foram analisados os limiares auditivos tonais do grupo de odontólogos por gênero, em relação à idade e tempo de serviço e aplicados procedimentos estatísticos para a edição dos dados. RESULTADOS: Observaram-se limiares auditivos tonais médios com configuração de entalhe acústico, sendo mais acentuados no gênero masculino. Há perda auditiva sensorioneural em 28(24,34%) odontólogos, 8 (14,54%) entre o gênero feminino e 20 (33,33%) entre o gênero masculino, a proporção de sujeitos com audição alterada é significativamente maior no gênero masculino (p=0,0208). Os limiares auditivos tonais para o gênero masculino apresentaram-se piores do que no feminino quando analisados por idade e tempo de serviço, porém os homens do estudo eram mais velhos e com mais tempo de serviço que as mulheres. CONCLUSÃO: Os odontólogos apresentaram perdas auditivas sensorioneurais com entalhe acústico (sendo mais presentes entre o gênero masculino) com piora auditiva com a idade e tempo de serviço, principalmente após 21 anos de trabalho.

INTRODUCTION: The dentists are exposed to noise in their work place, being likely to develop of hearing loss neurosensory with induced characteristics by noise. OBJECTIVE: Analyze the hearing thresholds from dentists characterizing them according to gender, age and time of service. METHOD: The form of the study is cross-section (or sectional), prospective, that analyzed the hearing thresholds from 115 dentists, through tone audiometry of 500 Hz to 8000 Hz by airway or bone conduction. Were analyzed the tonal hearing thresholds from the group of dentists by gender, regarding the age and time of service and applied statistical procedures for the edition of data. RESULTS: Were observed average tonal hearing thresholds with configuration from acoustic notch, being more accentuated in the male gender. There is sensorineural hearing loss in 28 (24,34%) dentists, 8 (14,54%) between female gender and 20 (33,33%) between the male gender, the proportion of subjects with altered hearing is significantly bigger in the male gender (p=0,0208). The tonal hearing thresholds for the male gender shown to be worse than in the females when analyzed by age and time of service, but the men were older and with more time of service than the women. CONCLUSION: The dentists presented sensorineural hearing loss with acoustic notch (being more present in the male gender) with worsening of hearing and time of service, especially after 21 years of work.

OBJETIVO: caracterizar o perfil de pescadores participantes de uma ação educativa desenvolvida como parte do Programa de Prevenção de Perdas Auditivas. MÉTODO: estudo seccional realizado com 52 pescadores industriais. Realizou-se ações educativas abordando temas pertinentes à audição, como funcionamento e cuidados. Após a ação, os participantes responderam a um questionário com questões referentes aos conceitos empregados na palestra e às queixas apresentadas, a seguir fizeram o exame de audiometria. RESULTADOS: a idade dos pescadores variou de 24 a 65 anos (média de 42,8 anos). 61,53% das audiometrias estavam alteradas, sendo que 96,8% dos pescadores com alterações auditivas tinham mais de 40 anos. No questionário respondido, 78,84% dos pescadores consideram que o ruído das embarcações é de forte intensidade; 17,31% referiam dificuldades auditivas; 30,77% com dificuldades em compreender fala e 46,15% com zumbido. 76,92% responderam que além da perda auditiva, o zumbido é um dos efeitos relacionados à exposição ao ruído. Todos estes resultados indicam a necessidade de intervenção preventiva individual e coletiva nesta população. O índice de perdas auditivas é um número que chama a atenção, porém, poucos sentem dificuldades auditivas. A ação educativa realizada foi o primeiro passo para a conscientização destes trabalhadores em relação à prevenção dos prejuízos que a exposição ao ruído pode causar à saúde. CONCLUSÕES: houve dependência significante entre o perfil auditivo e a idade dos pescadores, ou seja, a ocorrência de alterações auditivas é significativamente maior a partir de 40 anos de idade. Assim, os pescadores que apresentavam mais de 40 anos de idade tem 18,05 vezes mais alterações auditivas do que os com menos de 40 anos.

PURPOSE: to characterize fishermen's profile, participating in an educational program developed as part of the Prevention of Hearing Loss. METHOD: a cross-sectional study conducted with 52 fishing industry. We carried out educational activities on topics relevant to hearing, such as, operation and care. After the program, the participants answered a questionnaire on the concepts used in the lecture and the presented complaints, and then they passed through the audiometric exam. RESULTS: the age of the participants varied from 24 to 65 year old (average 42.8 year old). 61.53% of audiometry exams were altered and 96.8% of fishermen with hearing loss were more than 40 year old. Answering the questionnaire: 78.84% of the fishermen feel the noise of boats is very intense, 17.31% reported hearing difficulties; 30.77% with difficulty to understanding speech and 46.15% with tinnitus. 76.92% answered that along with hearing loss, tinnitus is one of the effects related to exposure to noise. All these findings indicate the need for individual and collective preventive intervention in this population. The rate of hearing loss is a number that draws attention; however, few have hearing difficulty. The performed educational program was the first step to awareness of these workers regarding prevention of the damage that exposure to noise may come to cause to health. CONCLUSIONS: there was significant dependence between the auditory and age of the fishermen, in other words, the occurrence of hearing loss is significantly greater from 40 year old. Thus, the fishermen who were more than 40 year old had 18.05 times more hearing loss than those who are less than 40 year old.
