RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a relação entre o processamento sensorial e as alterações das funções do Sistema Estomatognático de crianças respiradoras orais, caracterizando o processamento sensorial destas e comparando-o com o de respiradoras nasais. Método Foram selecionadas 50 crianças (5 a 12 anos) que apresentaram diagnóstico de respiração oral e 50 sem sinais e sintomas de respiração oral ou rinite alérgica para fazer parte do grupo controle, pareadas por idade e sexo. As crianças respiradoras orais e nasais passaram por avaliação do processamento sensorial, através da Sensory Processing Measure – Home form, e as respiradoras orais por avaliação da motricidade orofacial através da Avaliação Miofuncional Orofacial com Escore. Os resultados foram apresentados em forma de tabela e com suas respectivas frequências absoluta e relativa. Resultados A maioria das crianças avaliadas foi do sexo masculino, estando com idade média de 8 anos. A maioria dos respiradores orais apresentou alteração no processamento de todos os sentidos, com relação estatisticamente significativa quando comparados com os respiradores nasais. Houve relação, nos respiradores orais, entre o processamento sensorial proprioceptivo e o movimento das bochechas, processamento sensorial visual e movimentação da cabeça durante a deglutição e entre o tipo de mastigação e o processamento sensorial tátil. Conclusão Após análise dos dados foi possível perceber que o processamento sensorial de todos os sistemas se apresenta com alteração nos respiradores orais e que esse mau processamento se relaciona a mobilidade orofacial, bem como com funções do Sistema Estomatognático, além do tipo de mastigação dessa população.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the relationship between sensory processing and changes in the functions of the stomatognathic system in mouth breathing children, characterizing their sensory processing and comparing it with that of nasal breathing children. Methods 50 children (5 to 12 years) who were diagnosed with mouth breathing and 50 without signs and symptoms of mouth breathing or allergic rhinitis were selected to be part of the control group, matched for age and sex. Oral and nasal breathing children underwent sensory processing evaluation, through the Sensory Processing Measure – home form, and mouth breathers, through the evaluation of orofacial motricity through the Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with score. The results were presented in table form and with their respective absolute and relative frequencies. Results Most of the children evaluated were male, with an average age of eight years. Most mouth breathers presented alteration in the processing of all senses, with a statistically significant relationship when compared to nasal breathers. There was a relationship, in mouth breathers, between proprioceptive sensory processing and the movement of the cheeks, visual sensory processing and head movement during swallowing, and between the type of chewing and tactile sensory processing. Conclusion After analyzing the data, it was possible to see that the sensory processing of all systems presents with changes in mouth breathers and that this poor processing is related to orofacial mobility, as well as functions of the stomatognathic system, in addition to the type of chewing of this population.

RESUMO Objetivo: verificar a ocorrência de alterações vocais por seus respectivos parâmetros perceptivo-auditivos e acústicos em crianças sem queixas de voz, segundo o sexo. Métodos: foram avaliados os registros de 36 crianças sem queixas de voz, com idade entre seis e oito anos, sendo 19 do sexo masculino. O banco de dados consistiu de gravações de vogais sustentadas, frases e fala espontânea. A análise perceptivo-auditiva foi realizada por meio do Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice e a análise acústica por meio do VoxMetria. Foram analisados: frequência fundamental, jitter, shimmer, ruído e glottal to noise excitation ratio e aplicados os testes Mann-Whitney, para as variáveis numéricas, e McNemar, para as categóricas, com nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados: das cinco crianças com alterações vocais leves, quatro eram do sexo masculino. O desvio de ressonância mais ocorrente foi o laringofaríngeo. Não houve diferença entre os sexos, nos achados perceptivo-auditivos. A frequência fundamental do grupo com alterações foi menor em relação ao grupo sem alterações. Houve associação estatística entre as alterações na avaliação perceptivo-auditiva e nos parâmetros acústicos. Conclusão: a ocorrência de alterações vocais na população de crianças estudadas sem queixa vocal foi de 13,89% e não diferiu entre os sexos nos parâmetros perceptivo-auditivos. Das crianças que apresentaram desvios vocais, todos foram em grau leve, com rugosidade e soprosidade mais ocorrentes. A frequência fundamental e o shimmer foram os parâmetros acústicos com maior ocorrência de valores fora dos limites referenciais, em ambos os sexos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify, with the auditory-perceptual and acoustic parameters, the occurrence of voice changes in children with no voice complaints, per sex. Methods: the registers of 36 children with no voice complaints, aged 6 to 8 years, of whom 19 were males, were assessed. The databank consisted of the recordings of sustained vowels, sentences, and spontaneous speech. The auditory-perceptual analysis was conducted with the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice, and the acoustic analysis, with VoxMetria. The fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, noise, and glottal-to-noise excitation ratio were analyzed. The Mann-Whitney test was applied for numerical variables, and the McNemar test, for the categorical ones, at the p < 0.05 significance level. Results: of the 5 children with mild voice changes, 4 were males. The most frequent resonance deviation was the laryngopharyngeal one. There was no difference between the sexes in the auditory-perceptual findings. The fundamental frequency in the group with changes was lower than that in the group without changes. There was a statistical association between the changes in the auditory-perceptual assessment and the acoustic parameters. Conclusion: voice changes occurred in 13.89% of the studied sample of children with no voice complaints, without differences between the sexes in the auditory-perceptual parameters. Vocal deviations were in a mild degree in all children who had them, the most frequent ones being roughness and breathiness. The fundamental frequency and shimmer were the acoustic parameters whose values most often occurred outside the reference limits, in both genders.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the correlation between the values of nasal aeration and geometry of the nasal cavities, before and after nasal cleansing in children with mouth breathing. Methods: 20 children aged 4 to 12 years old were chosen. The questionnaire Identification Index of Signs and Symptoms of Oral breathing was applied and nasal patency was assessed by nasal aeration, through the Altmann graded mirror, and the nasal geometry measured by acoustic rhinometry. After nasal cleansing and massage, the same aeration measurements and nasal geometry procedures were performed. Group normality was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test considering the hypothesis of normal distribution whenever p>0.05. The Spearman’s test was applied to analyze the correlation between variables (p<0.05). Results: there was a strong and significant correlation between nasal aeration and the corresponding cross-sectional area of the front of the inferior turbinate (CSA2) in the left cavity before cleansing. There were no correlations between the nasal aeration and other rhinometric variables. Conclusion: there was a correlation between nasal aeration values and the anterior portion of the turbinates, before the massage and nasal cleansing technique, in mouth breathing children. There were no significant differences when the nasal aeration was correlated with other rhinometric variables.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar a amplitude e a velocidade dos ciclos mastigatórios avaliados por eletrognatografia em um grupo de indivíduos idosos e confrontar esses dados com outros dois grupos de sujeitos com doença de Parkinson (DP) diferenciados pela característica motora predominante. Métodos: os 42 participantes foram divididos em três grupos: A com 15 voluntários e média de idade de 62 anos, sendo 8 do sexo feminino; B com 14 voluntários Parkinsonianos com rigidez predominante e média etária de 58 anos, dos quais 7 eram mulheres; e o grupo C com 13 voluntários, com DP e tremor predominante, com média de idade de 64 anos, sendo 4 mulheres. Empregou-se o teste ANOVA para diferença de médias, com contraste post-hoc de Dunnett ou teste t de Student, todos em nível de significância de 0,05. Resultados: houve maiores diferenças entre as medias dos grupos A e B no numero total de ciclos mastigatórios (A= 23,13 ± 1,41 B=18,21 ± 1,70) [p=0,034] e nas amplitudes máxima de abertura de boca (A= 34,66 ± 2,04 B=26,72 ± 2,49) [p=0,018], lateralização para direita (A=7,02 ± 0,59 B=5,80 ± 0,97) [p=0,036] e para esquerda (A=6,44 ± 0,64 B=3,35 ± 0,80) [p=0,039]. Conclusão: tendo o grupo de idosos superado as medias, na movimentação mandibular durante a mastigação, do grupo de parkinsonianos com rigidez significativamente. Podemos concluir que, é provável que fatores como a rigidez parkinsoniana possam comprometer a mastigação de indivíduos com a doença de Parkinson.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize the amplitude and speed of masticatory cycles evaluated by electrognathography in one group of elder individuals and to compare these data with those of two other groups of Parkinson's disease subjects. Methods: 42 volunteers participants in this study were divided into three groups: A with 15 volunteers, average age of 62 years, 8females, B with 14 volunteers characterized by a Parkinson’s hypokinesia, average age of 58 years, of which 7 are female, and C with 13 volunteers characterized by a Parkinson’s tremor, with average age of 64 years, being 4 female. It was used the ANOVA test for difference of means with post-hoc Dunnett's contrast or Student's t-test, all at 0.05 significance level. Results: there were greater differences between the means of groups A and B in the total number of masticatory cycles (A = 23.13 ± 1.41 B = 18.21 ± 1.70) [p = 0.034] and in the maximum mouth opening amplitudes (A = 34.66 ± 2.04 B = 26.72 ± 2.49) [p = 0.018], lateralization to the right (A = 7.02 ± 0.59 B = 5.80 ± 0.97) P = 0.036] and left (A = 6.44 ± 0.64 B = 3.35 ± 0.80) [p = 0.039]. Conclusion: the elderly group exceeded the means, in the mandibular movement during chewing, of the rigid group of parkinsonians. We may conclude that factors such as parkinsonian stiffness are likely to compromise the chewing of individuals with Parkinson's disease.

RESUMO A avaliação e quantificação das possíveis alterações da cavidade nasal são necessárias para o auxílio diagnóstico e tratamento de crianças que respiram predominantemente pela boca. O modo respiratório oral pode desencadear distúrbios da fala, deformidades da face, mau posicionamento dos dentes, postura corporal inadequada e alterações no sistema respiratório. Objetivo analisar as mudanças ocorridas na geometria das cavidades nasais, antes e depois da limpeza nasal por meio da aeração nasal e da rinometria acústica em crianças com respiração oral. Método Foram selecionadas 20 crianças com idade entre quatro e 12 anos. A coleta foi realizada no Laboratório Multifuncional do Departamento de Fonoaudiologia da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Foi aplicado o Índice de Identificação dos Sinais e Sintomas da Respiração Oral; marcação da aeração nasal por meio do espelho milimetrado de Altmann e o exame da geometria nasal por Rinometria Acústica. Depois da limpeza e massagem nasal com o soro fisiológico, foram realizados os mesmos procedimentos. Resultados Observaram-se mudanças significantes nas áreas relativas ao fluxo aéreo nasal em ambos os lados, após limpeza e massagem nasais. Quanto à geometria nasal, aferida por meio da rinometria acústica, o efeito da limpeza e massagem nasal mostrou-se discreto, quando feita a comparação entre as narinas. Conclusão As medidas de aeração nasal mostraram sensibilidade à técnica de limpeza e massagem e as medidas da geometria nasal confirmaram seu efeito sobre a fisiologia respiratória.

ABSTRACT The evaluation and quantification of possible changes in the nasal cavity can assist in the diagnostics and treatment in children who breathe predominantly through the mouth. The oral breathing mode can initiate speech disorders, facial deformities, poor positioning of the teeth, improper body posture, and changes in the respiratory system. Purpose To analyze the changes occurred in the nasal cavity geometry, before and after nasal cleansing, through nasal aeration and acoustic rhinometry in children with oral breathing. Methods Twenty children aged four to 12 years were included in the study. The gathering of participants was conducted at the Multifunctional Laboratory of the Speech Pathology Department of the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE. The following procedures were conducted: Identification Index of Signs and Symptoms of Oral Breathing; marking of nasal expiratory airflow using the graded mirror of Altmann, and examination of the Nasal Geometry by Acoustic Rhinometry. The same procedures were performed after nasal massage and cleansing with saline solution. Results Significant change was observed in the areas with respect to the nasal airflow on both sides after nasal cleansing and massage. As for nasal geometry, measured by acoustic rhinometry, comparison between the nostrils showed that the effect of cleansing and massage was discrete. Conclusion Nasal aeration measures showed sensitivity to the cleansing and massage technique and measures of nasal geometry confirmed its effect on respiratory physiology.

RESUMO Objetivos: Revisar de forma sistemática os métodos para avaliação do olfato em vítimas de hemorragia subaracnóidea aneurismática, e identificar as alterações encontradas com a utilização desses métodos. Estratégia de pesquisa: A pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada na plataforma de busca PubMed e nas bases de dados Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL e ScienceDirect, tendo a busca de dados ocorrida em agosto e setembro de 2014. Critérios de seleção: Artigos originais publicados em qualquer língua que abordassem as alterações de olfato na hemorragia subaracnóidea aneurismática, com objetivo de avaliar essa função através de métodos específicos. Foram excluídos estudos de revisão; estudos de caso; capítulos de livro; editoriais e estudos que abordassem a hemorragia subaracnóidea não aneurismática. Análise dos dados: Foram consideradas como variáveis na análise dos dados: autor/ano, país, amostra/idade, tratamento, método utilizado, momento da avaliação do olfato e resultados. Resultados: A busca de artigos resultou em 1.763 artigos, desses, 9 artigos originais foram selecionados para esta revisão. Foi observado que todos os artigos foram desenvolvidos em países europeus e asiáticos e na avaliação do olfato utilizou-se desde testes padronizados e não padronizados a questionários, cujos objetivos variaram entre avaliar o olfato antes e/ou após o tratamento cirúrgico nessa população. Conclusão: Foi observada heterogeneidade nos métodos utilizados para avaliação do olfato na hemorragia subaracnóidea aneurismática, como também no momento selecionado para aplicação das avaliações. Além disso, os estudos evidenciaram a existência de déficit olfatório nos pacientes, e a relação entre o tratamento cirúrgico e a disfunção olfatória.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To systematically review the methods for evaluation of smell in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage victims and to identify the changes found with the use of these methods. Research strategy: The literature search was performed in PubMed search platform and in the databases Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and ScienceDirect in August and September 2014. Selection criteria: Original articles published in any language, which addressed smell changes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and addressed to evaluate this function through specific methods were included. Review studies, case studies, book chapters, editorial, and studies that address the nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage were excluded. Data analysis: The following variables were considered in data analysis: author/year, country, sample/age, treatment, method, the moment of smell evaluation, and results. Results: The search for articles resulted in 1,763 articles, of which, 9 original articles were selected for this review. It was observed that all articles were from European and Asian countries. Standardized and nonstandardized tests and questionnaires were used in olfactory assessment, and the goals ranged from assessing the smell before and/or after surgery in this population. Conclusion: Heterogeneity was observed in the methods used to evaluate the smell in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and in the methods selected for application of evaluations. In addition, studies have demonstrated the existence of olfactory deficits in patients and the relationship between surgery and olfactory dysfunction.

INTRODUÇÃO: A rinite alérgica pode causar alterações nas funções estomatognáticas; tais modificações podem alterar a dinâmica mandibular. A eletrognatografia é utilizada no registro dos movimentos de mandíbula, o que a torna válida para análise desses movimentos na fala.OBJETIVO: Caracterizar a amplitude e a velocidade dos movimentos de mandíbula durante a fala em crianças com e sem rinite alérgica.MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por 32 crianças com idade entre 7 e 12 anos, atendidas em um hospital universitário, divididas em dois grupos, um de riníticos e outro de não riníticos. Para captação dos movimentos mandibulares durante a fala, foi utilizado um eletrognatógrafo com o auxílio de uma lista de figuras foneticamente balanceadas. Na análise dos dados utilizaram-se, além da estatística descritiva, os testes não paramétricos, coeficiente de correlação de Spearman e o teste de Mann-Whitney, considerando significativo o valor de p=0,05.RESULTADOS: Não se observou diferença significativa nos movimentos mandibulares entre os grupos, com valores de p iguais a 0,175, 0,650 e 0,462, para a amplitude e as velocidades de abertura e o fechamento mandibular, respectivamente. No entanto, houve correlação forte entre as variáveis velocidade e amplitude de abertura da boca, sendo discretamente maior no grupo de crianças com rinite alérgica.CONCLUSÃO: Observou-se que a amplitude e a velocidade dos movimentos mandibulares são semelhantes em crianças com e sem rinite alérgica, e que existe correlação entre estas variáveis; além disso, seus valores apresentaram-se de forma mais heterogênea nos não riníticos.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis can cause changes in stomatognathic functions, which may alter the mandibular dynamics. Electrognathography is used in the recording of jaw movements, making it valid for analysis of movements in speech.PURPOSE: To characterize the amplitude and velocity of jaw movements during speech in children with and without allergic rhinitis.METHODS: The sample consisted of 32 children aged 7-12 years, treated at a university hospital, divided into two groups: one with rhinitis and the other without rhinitis. To capture the jaw movements during speech, we used an electrognathography with the aid of a list of phonetically balanced figures. For the analysis of data, we used, in addition to descriptive statistics, nonparametric tests, Spearman correlation coefficient and the Mann-Whitney test, with a significant value of p=0.05.RESULTS: No significant difference was observed in jaw movements between groups, with values of p equals to 0.175, 0.650, and 0.462 for amplitude and jaw opening and closing velocity, respectively. However, a strong correlation was observed between the variables velocity and amplitude of mouth opening, being slightly higher in the group of children with allergic rhinitis.CONCLUSION: The amplitude and velocity of jaw movements are found to be similar in children with and without allergic rhinitis, and a correlation exits between these variables. In addition, they were more heterogeneous in the group without allergic rhinitis.
