When we teach Physics, mainly in High School and in the context of teacher training, the aim is to teach, in addition to physical concepts, aspects of the nature of science (what is science, what differentiates science from other forms of knowledge, how science impacts society). Doing so is a huge challenge, as it may imply a choice between emphasizing more conceptual and mathematical elements, or making the discussion more philosophical. Our objective is to present a proposal for the analysis of historical texts with a didactic purpose, in order to allow the exploration of Physics (the conceptual and mathematical aspects) at the same time that epistemic and social aspects of science are discussed. In this sense, we propose, in this article, an alternative to explore history with the aim of highlighting a little analyzed element about the nature of Science: the role of scientific hypotheses in the construction of knowledge. We assume that every statement whose content exceeds the empirical content of a research can be considered a hypothesis. Seeking to establish an analysis proposal with didactic purposes, we propose a categorization of scientific hypotheses regarding their nature (cosmovisive, ontological or representational) and regarding their logical role in the construction of Science (initial axioms, hypotheses assumed later or derivations). Finally, we exemplify the application of this framework in the analysis of historical episodes that led to the Heat Equation and Schrödinger’s Equation, examples that could be adopted in the context of Physics teacher education, suggesting that research based on the proposed approach be developed in the future.

Ao ensinar Física, principalmente na Educação Básica e no contexto de formação de professores, tem-se por objetivo ensinar, além dos conceitos físicos, aspectos sobre a natureza da ciência (o que é ciência, o que diferencia ciência de outras formas de conhecimento, como a ciência impacta a sociedade). Fazer isso é um enorme desafio, pois pode implicar uma escolha entre enfatizar elementos conceituais e matemáticos, ou fazer uma discussão mais filosófica. Nosso objetivo é apresentar uma proposta de análise de textos históricos com finalidade didática, a fim de permitir que se explore a Física (os aspectos conceituais e matemáticos) ao mesmo tempo em que são discutidos aspectos epistêmicos e sociais da ciência. Nesse sentido, propomos, neste artigo, uma alternativa para explorar a história com o objetivo de evidenciar um elemento pouco analisado sobre a natureza da Ciência: o papel das hipóteses científicas na construção do conhecimento. Assumimos que toda afirmação cujo conteúdo excede o conteúdo empírico de uma pesquisa pode ser considerada uma hipótese. Procurando estabelecer uma proposta de análise com fins didáticos, propomos uma categorização das hipóteses científicas quanto à natureza delas (cosmovisivas, ontológicas ou representacionais) e quanto ao papel lógico delas na construção da Ciência (axiomas iniciais, hipóteses assumidas posteriormente ou derivações). Por fim, exemplificamos a aplicação dessa estrutura na análise dos episódios históricos que deram origem à Equação do Calor e à Equação de Schrödinger, exemplos que poderiam ser adotados no contexto de formação de professores de Física, sugerindo que pesquisas pautadas pela proposta apresentada sejam desenvolvidas futuramente.

In the present work we present a didactic reconstruction of de Broglie’s demonstration of the equivalence between two fundamental physical concepts: action minimization and entropy maximization. The demonstration was first developed in de Broglie’s Thermodynamics of the Isolated Particle (an attempt to develop a causal interpretation of Quantum Theory in the 1960s). In this work, de Broglie argues from a particle in a hypothetical sub-quantum medium, which operates as a kind of hidden thermostat exchanging energy with the particle. In the discussion about the action minimization and entropy maximization, however, there is not any reference to the quantum nature of the system. So, it is a demonstration valid for any system in a thermal bath in some usual thermostat. Louis de Broglie concludes that the “natural” trajectory of a particle is not only the one that minimizes the action of the particle but also maximizes the entropy of the thermostat. Our objective is to reconstruct and restructure de Broglie’s original demonstration in order to rescue an historical debate, that has not been addressed in the literature, and that is of interest to contemporary fields such as non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

ABSTRACT: Considering the recurrent attacks on the democratic rule of law and scientific knowledge, the present work is characterized as a literature review that intends to investigate how Science Teaching has treated the citizenship education. Starting from theoretical discussions that differentiate citizenship and citizen models according to contemporary political theories, 64 articles published in national journals of Qualis A1, A2 and B1 were analyzed. The results show a discursive plurality - despite the scarcity of approaches that consider the polysemy of the concept of citizenship - and point to the favoring of liberal and socializing democratic models to the detriment of partipatory proposals. Investigations in the scope of Basic Education predominate, which portray the strong presence of political liberalism, and a possible difficulty in the area in conceiving scientific disciplines as elements for overcoming inequalities and the search for social justice is highlighted.

RESUMEN: Considerando los recurrentes ataques al Estado democrático de derecho y al conocimiento científico, este trabajo se caracteriza por ser una revisión bibliográfica cuyo objetivo es investigar cómo la Enseñanza de las Ciencias ha tratado la formación para la ciudadanía. A partir de discusiones teóricas que diferencian modelos de ciudadanía y ciudadano según las teorías políticas contemporáneas, se analizaron 64 artículos publicados en revistas nacionales de Qualis A1, A2 y B1. Los resultados resaltan una pluralidad discursiva -a pesar de la escasez de enfoques que consideren la polisemia del concepto de ciudadanía- y apuntan la posibilidad de favorecer modelos democráticos liberales y lógicas socializadoras en detrimento de propuestas participativas. Predominan las investigaciones en el ámbito de la Educación Básica, las cuales mayoritariamente se alinean con el liberalismo político, y se destaca una posible dificultad en el área para concebir las asignaturas científicas como elementos para la superación de las desigualdades y la búsqueda de la justicia social.

RESUMO: Considerando os recorrentes ataques ao estado democrático de direito e ao conhecimento científico, o presente trabalho se caracteriza como uma revisão da literatura que pretende investigar como o Ensino de Ciências tem tratado a formação para a cidadania. Partindo de discussões teóricas que diferenciam modelos de cidadania e de cidadão conforme teorias políticas contemporâneas, foram analisados 64 artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais de Qualis A1, A2 e B1. Os resultados evidenciam uma pluralidade discursiva - apesar da escassez de abordagens que considerem a polissemia do conceito de cidadania - e apontam para o favorecimento de modelos democráticos liberais e de lógica socializante em detrimento de propostas participativas. Predominam investigações no âmbito da Educação Básica, as quais majoritariamente se alinham ao liberalismo político, e destaca-se uma possível dificuldade da área em conceber as disciplinas científicas como elementos de superação de desigualdades e busca por justiça social.

Neste trabalho, apresentamos a discussão original de Gibbs sobre a equivalência entre as condições de equilíbrio, a dizer, a condição de máxima entropia para uma energia determinada e a condição de mínima energia par uma entropia determinada – as quais são apresentadas como teoremas pelo autor. Na sequência, mostramos como tal discussão aparece em livros didáticos contemporâneos que apresentamos a Termodinâmica a partir de suas leis (lei zero mais as três leis). Comparamos tal apresentação com a discussão feita por Callen, em sua abordagem postulacional da Termodinâmica. Mostramos que parte da discussão de Gibbs foi perdida mesmo nos livros que abordam as leis. Ademais, discutimos que a abordagem de Callen não enfatiza o fato de que apesar de os princípios serem equivalentes, termalizar um sistema composto por processos distintos (um com energia constante e outro com entropia constante) conduz a diferentes valores de temperatura. Além de resolver o problema analiticamente, apresentamos uma análise gráfica do problema. Ao final, discutimos implicações para o ensino de termodinâmica.

In this paper, we present Gibbs’ original discussion on the equivalence between equilibrium conditions, i.e., a maximum entropy condition for a given energy and the minimum energy condition for a given entropy – which are presented as theorems by the author. Next, we show how such a discussion appears in contemporary textbooks that present Thermodynamics from its laws (law zero plus the three laws). We compare this presentation with the discussion made by Callen, in his postulational approach to Thermodynamics. We show that part of Gibbs’ discussion has been lost even in textbooks dealing with the laws. Furthermore, we argue that Callen’s approach does not emphasize the fact that although the principles are the same, thermalizing a system composed of distinct processes (one with constant energy and the other with constant temperature) leads to different temperature values. In addition to solving the problem analytically, we present a graphical analysis of the problem. At the end, we discuss implications for thermodynamics teaching.

O Princípio da Incerteza, proposto pelo físico Werner Heisenberg em 1927, possui centralidade no desenvolvimento Teoria Quântica e desde sua formulação assume uma pluralidade de interpretações, derivações matemáticas e experimentos mentais que buscam explorá-lo em profundidade. Entretanto, os livros didáticos, que possuem papel importante na formação de cientistas e professores de ciência, usualmente optam por privilegiar somente alguns de seus principais aspectos, limitando a apresentação do Princípio da Incerteza nos cursos de Teoria Quântica do ensino superior. Com o objetivo de ampliar as discussões sobre o Princípio da Incerteza para as variáveis posição e momentum e contribuir com o Ensino da Teoria Quântica, ao longo deste texto apresentamos o Princípio da Incerteza em três diferentes níveis (formalismo matemático, fenomenologia e interpretação). Começamos resgatando de forma didática quatro diferentes derivações históricas do Princípio da Incerteza: as derivações de Heisenberg e Weyl para as variáveis posição e momentum, e as derivações de Robertson e Schrödinger para dois observáveis quaisquer A e B. Em seguida, retomamos dois experimentos mentais propostos por Heisenberg: o microscópio de raios-gama e o elétron passando por uma fenda. Por fim, apresentamos quatro principais escolas de interpretação do Princípio da Incerteza.

The Uncertainty Principle, proposed by the physicist Werner Heisenberg in 1927, is central to the development of Quantum Theory and since its summary assumes a plurality of interpretations, mathematical derivations and mental experiments that seek to explore it in depth. However, textbooks, which play an important role in the training of scientists and science teachers, usually choose to privilege only some of their main aspects and end up limiting the presentation of the Uncertainty Principle in Quantum Theory courses in higher education. In order to increase discussions about the Uncertainty Principle for the variables position and moment and contribute to the Quantum Theory Teaching, throughout this text we present the Uncertainty Principle at three different levels (mathematical formalism, phenomenology and interpretation). We started by rescuing, in a didactic way, four different historical derivations of the Uncertainty Principle: the Heisenberg and Weyl derivations for the variables position and momentum, and the Robertson and Schrodinger derivations for two observables any A and B. Then, we retake two thought experiments proposed by Heisenberg: the gamma-ray microscope and the electron passing through a slit. Finally, we present the four main schools of interpretation of the Uncertainty Principle.

Nos cursos de licenciatura, usualmente, as discussões sobre Epistemologia são feitas de forma desconectada das discussões técnicas, muitas vezes realizadas apenas em disciplinas específicas. Buscando romper com esse abismo entre os conteúdos técnicos e pedagógicos das licenciaturas em Física, apresentamos uma análise de um curso de extensão sobre Astrofísica e Epistemologia, oferecido para professores de ciências e licenciandos de Física. Nesse curso, diferentes episódios da Astronomia e Astrofísica foram discutidos à luz de diferentes concepções epistemológicas. Nosso objetivo era permitir que os alunos refletissem sobre suas próprias concepções, confrontando-as com as diferentes possibilidades apresentadas. Para avaliar a intervenção, foi realizado um pré-teste e pós-teste, em que os participantes expressavam sua concordância com 10 enunciados sobre natureza da ciência. As respostas foram analisadas usando o método estatístico de Escalonamento Multidimensional. Nossos resultados mostram que, inicialmente, as respostas não apresentavam consistência interna e os participantes exibiam o mesmo grau de concordância em relação a visões concorrentes sobre a natureza da ciência. Após o curso, os participantes passaram a se posicionar de forma mais coerente, concordando com características de uma mesma visão epistemológica e se afastando de visões concorrentes.

In undergraduate courses, discussions on Epistemology are usually made disconnected from technical discussions, often carried out only in specific disciplines. Seeking to break this chasm between the technical and pedagogical contents of Physics degrees, we present an analysis of na outreach course on Astrophysics and Epistemology, offered to science teachers and Physics undergraduates. In this course, different episodes of Astronomy and Astrophysics were discussed accordingly to epistemological conceptions. Our objective was to allow students to reflect on their own conceptions, confronting them with the different possibilities. To evaluate the intervention, a pre-test and post-test were carried out, in which the participants expressed their agreement with 10 statements about the nature of science. Responses were analyzed using the statistical method of Multidimensional Scaling. Our results show that, initially, the answers lacked internal consistency and the participants showed the same degree of agreement regarding competing views on the nature of science. After the course, the participants began to position themselves more coherently, agreeing with characteristics of the same epistemological vision and moving away from competing visions.

A desigualdade de Bell, foi uma das discussões que mais gerou controvérsias em torno dos fundamentos da Teoria Quântica, pois envolvia aspectos físico-matemáticos e, também, discussões filosóficas sobre a realidade. O intuito do presente artigo é elaborar uma abordagem didática para a apresentação do Teorema de Bell e suas implicações para o desenvolvimento da Teoria Quântica. Para isso, a proposta é apresentar o material de forma a facilitar seu uso em contexto pedagógico, apresentando inicialmente um exemplo mais concreto do que seria o Teorema de Bell, o experimento (sendo apenas uma analogia ao experimento de Bell) de Mermin. Na sequência, após o aluno ter uma noção concreta sobre o tema, serão apresentados os fundamentos matemáticos necessários para o entendimento do Teorema e, então, uma explicação do argumento de Bell. Ao ser explicado dessa forma, o Teorema de Bell pode assumir um caráter menos instrumentalista, evidenciando a controvérsia envolvida no seu desenvolvimento. Ao destacar de onde e porque determinados elementos são utilizados na derivação da desigualdade de Bell, por uma perspectiva que permite compreender a construção da teoria, buscamos aproximar o estudante dos conceitos apresentados e promover uma melhor compreensão da natureza da ciência no que diz respeito à Teoria Quântica.

Bell’s inequality, proposed in the article “On the Einstein Podolsky Rosen Paradox”, was one of the discussions that most generated controversy around the foundations of Quantum Theory, as it involved physical-mathematical aspects and also philosophical discussions about reality. The purpose of this article is to elaborate a didactic approach for the presentation of Bell’s Theorem and its implications for the development of Quantum Theory. For this, the proposal is to present the material in order to facilitate its use in a pedagogical context, initially presenting a more concrete example of what would be Bell’s Theorem, Mermin’s approach, and then, after the student has a concrete notion about the theme, to present the necessary mathematical foundations for the understanding of the Theorem and, then, an explanation of Bell’s argument. When developed in this way, Bell’s Theorem can take on a less instrumentalist character, highlighting the controversy involved in its development. By highlighting where and why certain elements are used in the derivation of Bell’s inequality, from a perspective that allows understanding the construction of theory, we seek to bring the student closer to the concepts presented and promote a better understanding of the nature of science with regard to Theory Quantum.

Resumo O trabalho apresenta uma análise metalinguística de canções que compõem o álbum Quanta, de Gilberto Gil, explicitando as relações dialógicas que o enunciado artístico pode estabelecer com as ciências contemporâneas e com uma visão de saúde. Para tanto, é feita uma breve apresentação sobre o quadro teórico-metodológico a ser utilizado, a metalinguística de Bakhtin, e, a partir dele, são estabelecidos três eixos de análise, privilegiando a concepção de ciência, de física quântica e de saúde e cura presentes no álbum e evidenciando as complexas relações entre arte, física e saúde.

Abstract This article presents a metalinguistic analysis of the songs comprising the album Quanta by Gilberto Gil, highlighting the dialogical relationships that artistic endeavors can establish between contemporary science and a vision of health. This involves a brief introduction of the theoretical/methodological framework and Bakhtin’s metalinguistics, followed by the establishment of three different analytical threads that follow the concepts of science, quantum physics, and health and healing which are present in the album, depicting the complex relationships between art, physics and health.

Resumo A disseminação da COVID-19, a mutação climática, o aumento das desigualdades sociais e o avanço da necropolítica, bem como a negação desses elementos por parte da população mundial e brasileira, exigem um novo mapa dos posicionamentos políticos e epistemológicos. Dialogando com a epistemologia política de Bruno Latour e com as Epistemologias do Sul, apresentamos uma reflexão sobre como a área de Educação em Ciências pode se articular para dar conta das questões que se impõem na contemporaneidade. Defendemos, nesse trabalho, concordando com Latour, que a Educação em Ciências precisa 'aterrar' e que, para isso, é necessário se aliar diplomaticamente aos atores do antigo eixo 'absolutista / relativista'. Diferentemente de Bruno Latour, entretanto, defendemos que o protagonista no Antropoceno não será mais a Europa, mas o Sul político e epistemológico do mundo, e a educação em ciências brasileira pode ter papel crucial nesse movimento.

Abstract The spread of COVID-19, climate change, the increase in social inequalities, and necropolitics, as well as the denial of these elements by the world and the Brazilian population, require a new definition of political and epistemological positions. In dialogue with Bruno Latour's political epistemology and with Epistemologies of the South, we present a reflection on how Science Education can articulate itself to deal with the issues that are imposed in contemporary times. In this paper, agreeing with Latour, we contend that Science Education needs to 'land', and that it is necessary to ally diplomatically with the actors of the old 'absolutist / relativist' axis. Unlike Bruno Latour, however, we argue that the protagonist in the Anthropocene will no longer be Europe, but the political and epistemological South of the world, and Brazilian science education may play a crucial role in this movement.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta um estudo de Epistemologia Política sobre a implementação de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares no sistema de saúde do Brasil. O objetivo foi analisar a controvérsia existente entre as recomendações da Organização Mundial da Saúde, as Portarias do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil e as cartas públicas de instituições científicas. Evidenciamos as visões epistêmicas e os interesses políticos subjacentes presentes em cada um dos documentos.

Resumo Este trabalho faz uma incursão através de algumas obras de Richard Feynman, com uma análise metalinguística dos enunciados de Física Quântica presentes na obra Lições de Física, bem como nas obras QED: a estranha teoria da luz e da matéria e Os melhores textos de Richard P. Feynman. Investigamos como que o tema, a estrutura composicional e a escolha lexical expressam a enunciação de visões epistemológicas e ontológicas subjacentes à apresentação do conteúdo físico. Nossos resultados mostram que o jovem cientista apresenta o conteúdo físico alinhado axiologicamente com a Interpretação de Copenhague, adquirindo, em certos momentos, um viés positivista. Contudo, nas obras posteriores às Lições de Física, Feynman assume uma postura de maior preocupação com a divulgação científica. A direcionalidade, o projeto de fala e a intencionalidade de seus enunciados tornam seus textos recheados de visões complexas sobre a natureza das teorias científicas. Conclui-se que o conjunto de obras de Feynman apresenta uma profícua contribuição ao ensino de Física e àdivulgação da ciência, adotando diferentes vozes acerca da natureza da realidade e da ciência, sendo responsável ao período sociopolítico das diferentes enunciações, o que é um exemplo rico da não-neutralidade científica e pedagógica.

Abstract This work makes an inroad through some works of Richard Feynman, with a metalinguistic analysis of Quantum Physics statements in the Lectures on Physics, as well as in QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter and The Pleasure of Finding Things Out: The Best Short Works of Richard P. Feynman. We investigate how the theme, compositional structure, and lexical choices express the enunciation of epistemological and ontological visions underlying the presentation of physical content. Our results show that the young scientist presents the physical content axiologically aligned with the Copenhagen Interpretation, acquiring at times a positivist bias. However, in later post-Lectures on Physics works, Feynman takes a stance of greater concern with scientific dissemination. The directionality, the speech scheme, and the intentionality of his utterances make his texts full of complex views on the nature of scientific theories. It is concluded that Feynman's set of works makes a useful contribution to the teaching of physics and the dissemination of science, adopting different voices about the nature of reality and science, being responsible for the sociopolitical period of the different utterances, which is a rich example of scientific and pedagogical non-neutrality.

Abstract We discuss the proposition of wave-particle duality made by Louis de Broglie in the period of 1922-1924 as well as the narratives of undergraduate Physics textbooks that introduce this topic. After a brief discussion on the nature of scientific reality, we point out the main theories, assumptions and techniques adopted by de Broglie to achieve the relation between momentum and wavelength. We use these elements as analytical categories, observing which of them are still present in four popular undergraduate introductory textbooks. Our results show that none of the textbooks used de Broglie's original strategy (mathematical derivation), treating his ideas as postulates. Moreover, we show that only few elements of de Broglie's original presentation are still commented by textbooks, which treat de Broglie's ideas as purely speculative, reinforcing the “genius myth”. In the sequence, we propose a didactic alternative, which we call a “chain of reference presentation”. In this strategy, we highlight that all scientific knowledge is supported by previous theories and it works as the ground of future scientific improvements. With this perspective, we perform a didactic derivation of de Broglie's momentum-wavelength relation (based on the original papers and on the specialized literature) and we introduce empirical and theoretical works that may be studied from it.

Resumo: Discussões sobre política e economia não estão presentes nas aulas de Ciências do Ensino Médio, restringindo-se em geral ao contexto das disciplinas das Ciências Humanas. Isso gera, por vezes, um desinteresse e uma alienação dos jovens sobre temas políticos, econômicos e sociais. Neste trabalho pretendemos chamar a atenção para a falta de interesse pela política por parte dos alunos e que esta pode estar associada ao seu desempenho escolar, especialmente nos estudantes oriundos das classes populares. Para tanto, utilizamos como dados empíricos as respostas dadas a um questionário por candidatos ao maior exame de larga escala do Brasil, o Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM). Na sequência, nos apropriamos do trabalho teórico de Pierre Bourdieu para tentar justificar a relação existente entre política, economia e os resultados escolares. Além disso, discutimos de que forma o Ensino de Ciências pode contribuir para a diminuição da brecha entre cultura política e cultura escolar.

Abstract: Discussions about politics and economics are not present in high school science classes, thus they remain restricted in most cases to the context of Human Sciences. This sometimes leads to disinterest and alienation among young people regarding political, economic and social issues. In this paper, we intend to emphasize that the students' lack of interest in politics may be associated with their school performance, especially in the case of students of lower social classes. Therefore, we use as empirical data the answers to a questionnaire which were provided by candidates in the largest large-scale exam in Brazil, used as a form of admission to public universities. Next, we will use the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu to justify the relations among politics, economics and school results. In addition, we will discuss how Science Education can contribute to narrow the gap between political culture and school culture.
