Candida albicans is an opportunistic yeast and a member of the normal human flora that commonly causes infections in patients with any type of deficiency of the immune system. The essential oils have been tested for antimycotic activity and pose much potential as antifungal agents. This work investigated the activity of the essential oil of Cymbopogon winterianus against C. albicans by MIC, MFC and time-kill methods. The essential oil (EO) was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. It was tested fifteen strains of C. albicans. The MIC was determined by the microdilution method and the MFC was determined when an aliquot of the broth microdilution was cultivated in SDA medium. The phytochemical analysis of EO showed presence of citronellal (23,59%), geraniol (18,81%) and citronellol (11,74%). The EO showed antifungal activity, and the concentrations 625 µg/mL and 1250 µg/mL inhibited the growth of all strains tested and it was fungicidal, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of various concentrations of EO was analyzed over time, it was found concentration-dependent antifungal activity, whose behavior was similar to amphotericin B and nystatin.

O extrato metanólico bruto (EMeOH) das partes aéreas da Herissantia crispa (L.) Brizicky, planta rica em flavonóides e que não possui estudos farmacológicos, foi testada para avaliar sua atividade sob os parâmetros comportamentais e determinar a dose letal 50 (DL50) em camundongos; atividade antimicrobiana e antiulcerogênica. O EMeOH (5000 mg/kg, v.o. ou 2000 mg/kg i.p.) não alterou os parâmetros comportamentais e não causou mortes nos animais. A amostra vegetal em estudo inibiu o crescimento bacteriano. O EMeOH (750 mg/kg) apresentou atividade anti-diarréica. O EMeOH (250, 500 e 750 mg/kg) foi capaz de inibir as lesões gástricas induzidas pelo 0,3 M HCl/etanol 60% em camundongos. Desta forma, pode-se concluir que a planta em estudo apresenta atividade antiulcerogênica, entretanto, se faz necessário avaliar tal atividade através de modelos mais específicos e estudar o mecanismo de ação pelo qual a amostra vegetal protege a mucosa gástrica.

The crude methanol extract (EMeOH) of the aerial parts of Herissantia crispa (L.) Brizicky, plant riches in flavonoids and without pharmacological studies, was tested to value its activity under the behaviour parameters and to determine the lethal dose (LD50) in mice; antimicrobial and antiulcerogenic activities. The EMeOH (5,000 mg/kg, v.o. or 2,000 mg/kg i.p.) did not alter the behaviour parameters and there were not mice deaths. The extract inhibited the bacterial growth. The EMeOH (750 mg/kg) showed anti-diarroeal activity. The EMeOH (250, 500 and 750 mg/kg) decreased the gastric lesions induced by 0.3 M HCl/ethanol 60% in mice. In conclusion, the EMeOH presents anti-ulcerogenic activity;, however it is necessary to value the antiulcerogenic activity in more specific models and to study the action mechanism by which the vegetable sample protects the gastric mucosa.

The phytochemical investigation of Herissantia crispa led to the isolation of seven compounds, identified as: sitosterol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, stigmasterol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, 3,5,7,4'-tetrahydroxyflavone (kaempferol), 3,5,7,3',4'-pentahydroxyflavone (quercetin), unpublished in the genus Herissantia, besides β-sitosterol, kaempferol 3-O-β-D-(6''-E-p-coumaroil) (tiliroside) glucopyranoside and kaempferol 3,7-di-O-α-L-ramnopyranoside (lespedin), described for the first time in the species. The structural determination of the compounds was made by means of spectroscopy methods such as Infrared Spectroscopy, ¹H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, with the aid of two dimensional techniques, and by comparison with literature data. The toxicity activity of the MeOH extract and lespedin on Artemia salina Leach. was also carried out.

Este estudo objetivou analisar a efetividade de maleimidas como inibidores do crescimento de cepas fúngicas isoladas de onicomicoses através da técnica de difusão em meio sólido. Os resultados mostraram destacável atividade antifúngica das maleimidas ensaiadas com a formação de halos de inibição do crescimento fúngico com diâmetros oscilando entre 10 e 23mm. A CIM encontrada foi 100µg/mL para 3,4-dicloro-N-fenil-metil-maleimida e 3,4-dicloro-N-fenil-propil-maleimida e 200µg/mL para 3,4-dicloro-N-fenil-maleimida, 3,4-dicloro-N-fenil-etil-maleimida e 3,4-dicloro-N-fenil-butil-maleimida.

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of maleimides as inhibitors on the growth of fungal strains isolated from onychomycosis by the solid medium diffusion procedure. The results showed a promising antifungical activity of the assayed maleimides with formation of fungal growth inhibition halos oscillating between diameter 10 and 23mm. MIC was 100µg/mL for 3,4-dichloro-N-phenyl-methyl-maleimide and 3,4-dichloro-N-phenyl-propil-maleimide and 200µg/mL for 3,4-dichloro-N-phenyl-maleimide, 3,4-dichloro-N-phenyl-ethyl-maleimide and 3,4-dichloro-N-phenyl-buthyl-maleimide.

A candidíase apresenta-se como uma infecção fúngica superficial ou profunda causada por leveduras pertencentes ao gênero Candida, sendo considerada a principal infecção micótica em ambiente nosocomial. O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar a concentração inibitória mínima - CIM do óleo essencial de Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume, Citrus limon Risso, Eucalyptus citriodora HK, Eugenia uniflora L., Peumus boldus Benth e de Rosmarinus officinialis L. sobre cepas de Candida albicans, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. stellatoidea e C. tropicalis. Os ensaios de atividade antifúngica foram realizados através da técnica de difusão em meio sólido. Os óleos essenciais de C. zeylanicum e P. boldus mostraram os mais destacáveis resultados, visto que inibiram o crescimento de 58% das cepas ensaiadas e apresentaram CIM de 4%.

Candidiasis occurs as a superficial or profound fungal infection caused by yeasts belonging to the Candida genus. This infectious has been considered the main mycotic infection in the nosocomial environment. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration - MIC of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume, Citrus limon Risso, Eucalyptus citriodora HK, Eugenia uniflora L., Peumus boldus Benth and Rosmarinus officinialis L. essential oils against Candida albicans, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. stellatoidea e C. tropicalis strains. The antifungal activity assays were carried out by solid medium diffusion technique. C. zeylanicum and P. boldus essential oils showed the most prominent results which inhibited the growth of 58% of the assayed yeasts strains and presented MIC of 4%.
