ABSTRACT Forest fires, regardless of their causes, represent one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in Brazilian protected areas. Collecting data on the causes, periods, and sites with the highest occurrence of fires allows for the adoption of more effective prevention strategies. The aim of this study was to characterize forest fires in Brazilian federal protected areas from 2006 to 2012, thus contributing to improving the knowledge of the dynamics of fires in these areas. Data were obtained from Fire Occurrence Records (ROIs, in Portuguese) available in the National Fire Information System (SISFOGO, in Portuguese) database. The total number of records found was 2,259, of which 88.2% had reported causes. Among the records with a reported cause, 42.2% correspond to unknown causes, 26.7% to debris burning, and 18.5% to arson events, which shows that the majority of fires with a known cause are the result of accidental or intentional human action. Forest fires were more frequent from July to October, with a mean of 50.6 occurrences per year, influenced by the annual precipitation distribution. Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará were the states with the highest number of records, with 19.8%, 15.5%, and 12.0%, respectively. Forest fires reported without any cause information or reported as unknown cause indicate, respectively, a poor use of the tool (ROI) or an unsatisfactory expertise in identifying the cause of the fire, resulting in an obstacle for planning actions to prevent and fight forest fires in protected areas.

RESUMO Os incêndios florestais, independentemente de suas causas, representam uma das maiores ameaças à biodiversidade nas unidades de conservação brasileiras. A coleta de dados sobre as causas, períodos e locais com maior ocorrência de incêndios possibilita a adoção de estratégias de prevenção mais eficazes. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar os incêndios florestais nas unidades de conservação federais brasileiras de 2006 a 2012, contribuindo assim para aprimorar o conhecimento da dinâmica dos incêndios nessas áreas. Os dados foram obtidos a partir dos Registros de Ocorrência de Incêndio (ROIs) disponíveis no banco de dados do Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Fogo (SISFOGO). O número total de registros encontrados foi de 2.259, dos quais 88,2% indicavam a causa do incêndio. Entre os registros com a causa indicada, 42,2% corresponderam à categoria “causa desconhecida”, 26,7% à queima para limpeza e 18,5% à incendiários, o que evidencia que a maioria dos incêndios com causa conhecida decorre da ação humana acidental ou intencional. Os incêndios florestais foram mais frequentes de julho a outubro, com uma média de 50,6 ocorrências por ano, influenciados pela distribuição anual da precipitação. Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro e Ceará foram os estados com maior número de registros, com 19,8%, 15,5% e 12,0%, respectivamente. Os incêndios florestais registrados sem informação de causa ou registrados como “causa desconhecida” revelam, respectivamente, mau uso da ferramenta (ROI) ou conhecimento insatisfatório na identificação da causa do incêndio, resultando em um obstáculo para o planejamento de ações de prevenção e combate a incêndios em unidades de conservação.

Abstract The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of fire on ant assemblages in savanna and forest typologies in the Reserva Natural da Serra do Tombador in Cavalcante - Goiás, Brazil. Ant pitfalls traps were installed and subdivided into Burnt Cerrado (BC), Unburnt Cerrado (UC), Burnt Forest (BF) and Unburnt Forest (UF), and the samples were sorted, assembled and identified. The constancy and abundance of individuals, and the frequency of distribution of the genera in the total area and by treatment were evaluated. The UF, BF, UC and BC had 19, 14, 8 and 15 genera, with Jackknife 1 index indicating 18.5, 24.4, 8.9 and 20.4 respectively. The Shannon diversity index for the genera was 0.8462, 0.7604, 0.6448 and 0.5992 for UF, BF, BC and UC respectively. The Cerrado showed greater abundance of individuals and greater ant diversity index in relation to Forest when in presence of fire.

Resumo Os incêndios florestais geram problemas em diversas escalas em todos os ecossistemas. é amplamente reconhecido que quanto mais se entender sobre o comportamento do fogo e sua resposta às condições ambientais, mais acertadas serão as decisões sobre a gestão dos incêndios. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o comportamento do fogo e suas correlações com os fatores ambientais associados ao clima. Queimas controladas de quatro parcelas por dia, em diferentes horários, e definidas ao acaso, foram realizadas durante 80 dias entre 01/07/2016 e 30/11/2016. O teor de umidade foi o parâmetro mais importante da inflamabilidade dos combustíveis e nas variáveis do comportamento do fogo. A umidade do material combustível reflete as condições atmosféricas e pode variar mais rápida e diretamente com aquelas do comportamento do fogo. A temperatura do ar foi o elemento mais correlacionado com a intensidade do fogo embora não teve correlação alguma com a velocidade de propagação. A variação dos resultados deste com os de outros estudos mostram a importância de se entender o comportamento do fogo em nível local.

Abstract Forest fires generate problems at various scales in all ecosystems. It is widely recognized that the more you understand about fire behavior and its response to environmental conditions, the better the decisions about fire management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of fire and its correlations with environmental factors associated with climate. Controlled burnings of four plots per day, at different times and defined at random, were carried out during 80 days between 07/01/2016 and 11/30/2016. The moisture content was the most important parameter of the flammability of the fuels and the variables of the behavior of the fire. The moisture of the combustible material reflects the atmospheric conditions and can vary more quickly and directly with those of the fire behavior. The air temperature was the most correlated element with the fire intensity although it did not have any correlation with the rate of spread. The variation of the results of this with those of other studies show the importance of understanding fire behavior at the local level.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of forest fire hazard indices for the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park region (MG). Although no weather station is present in this territory, the use of data obtained in the municipality of Viçosa (38 km distance) was effective to calculate the hazard. According to the results, the use of high and very high hazard classes to predict occurrences proved to be more efficient. The Telicyn, Nesterov, FMA and FMA+ indices showed better results when daily mean data was used while FWI responded better with daily maximum temperature and relative humidity at 3:00 p.m. The P-EVAP and FWI indices were the most efficient to predict fires in the study region.

RESUMO O fogo é um dos principais problemas do bioma Mata Atlântica, mesmo em áreas protegidas, como as Unidades de Conservação (UCs). Sendo assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer o perfil dos incêndios florestais no Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB) e entorno, bem como suas respostas frente às variações ambientais. Para isto, foram analisadas as informações dos Registros de Ocorrências de Incêndios (ROIs) e suas inter-relações com os sistemas ambientais do PESB, por meio das análises dos planos espaciais (uso e cobertura do solo e relevo) e temporais (elementos climatológicos). De acordo com os resultados, 38% dos registros apresentaram as causas dos incêndios, destas, 77% foram identificadas como antrópicas. Analisando-se a área queimada, observou-se o maior número de ocorrências dentro da classe III (4,1 - 40,0 ha). A vegetação herbácea, por conta de suas características favoráveis, foi a mais atingida. O relevo também influenciou as ocorrências, a declividade, exposição das vertentes e altitude participaram significativamente do regime de incêndios no parque. A atividade antrópica mostrou sua influência com o aumento do tamanho da área queimada nas proximidades de vias de acesso (trilhas e estradas). Já o clima controlou a disposição temporal das ocorrências, no qual períodos de menor umidade relativa do ar tornaram os meses de agosto e setembro como os pertencentes à estação normal de perigo de incêndios e a precipitação acumulada determinou os anos mais problemáticos. Os resultados aqui apresentados fornecerão informações para subsidiar a tomada de decisões de forma mais segura e confiável na prevenção das ocorrências de incêndios florestais no PESB e entorno, visto que contribuem com um melhor entendimento dos fatores que controlam as ocorrências de incêndios na região.

ABSTRACT Fire is one of the main problems of the Atlantic Rainforest biome, even in protected areas such as Protected Areas (PAs or UC, in Portuguese). Thus, the aim of this study was to know the profile of forest fires in the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (PESB-MG) and surroundings, as well as their responses in environmental variations. For this, we analyzed the information of Fire Incident Report (FIR or ROI, in Portuguese) and their interrelations with the environmental PESB systems through the analysis of spatial plans (land use and land cover and topography) and temporal (climatological elements). According to the results, only 38% of the records showed the causes of fires, of these, 77% were identified as anthropic. Analyzing the burned area, there was the highest number of occurrences within the class III (4.1 - 40.0 ha). The herbaceous vegetation, because of their favorable characteristics, was hardest hit. The relief also influenced the events, slope, aspect and height participated significantly in the fire regime in the Park. The anthropic activity showed its influence to increase the size of the area burned in the vicinity of access routes. The climate controlled the temporal arrangement of events, where periods of lower Relative humidity of air, made the months of August and September as belonging to the normal fire season and accumulated rainfall determined the most problematic years. The results presented here provide information to support the making of more safe and reliable decisions in the prevention of forest fire occurrences in PESB and surroundings, as they contribute to a better understanding of the factors that control the fire occurrences in the region.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho de diferentes índices de perigo de incêndio (FWI, FMA, FMA+, Telicyn, Nesterov, P-EVAP e EVAP/P) levando em consideração as variáveis de comportamento do fogo e a suscetibilidade ao fogo expressa pela umidade do material combustível. Para este propósito, queimas controladas foram realizadas em diferentes momentos e informações foram registradas em relação às condições meteorológicas, características do material combustível e variáveis do comportamento do fogo. Em geral, todos os índices apresentaram correlações significativas tanto com a umidade do material combustível quanto com o comportamento do fogo. No entanto, em geral, uma maior correlação linear dos componentes do sistema canadense Fire Weather Index (FWI) foi observada na previsão do comportamento do fogo e do índice EVAP/P na umidade do combustível. As correlações entre os vários índices e as variáveis analisadas tornam a metodologia passível de ser utilizada em qualquer local, facilitando a tomada de decisão em regiões onde os registros de ocorrências de incêndios florestais estão ausentes ou não são confiáveis.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of different fire hazard indices (FWI, FMA, FMA+, Telicyn, Nesterov, P-EVAP and EVAP/P), taking into account the fire behavior variables and the susceptibility to fire expressed by the moisture of the combustible material. For this purpose, controlled burnings were performed at different times and information was recorded in relation to the meteorological conditions, characteristics of the combustible material and fire behavior variables. In general, all the indices presented significant correlations with both the moisture of the combustible material and the behavior of the fire. However, in general, a higher linear correlation of components of the Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) system was observed in predicting fire behavior and EVAP / P index in fuel moisture. The consistency of the correlations between the various indices and the analyzed variables makes the methodology possible to be used in any place, facilitating the decision making in regions where records of occurrences of forest fires are absent or unreliable.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi definir, através da análise da influência de fatores preditores como clima, relevo, uso do solo e influência antrópica, um mapa de risco de incêndios florestais com a utilização de técnicas de geoprocessamento. De acordo com os resultados, nenhuma das classes preditoras explicou, de forma isolada, a espacialização das ocorrências. Todavia este estudo conseguiu retratar a influência dos fatores sobre as ocorrências de incêndios florestais. Os mapas gerados apresentaram satisfatória eficiência na predição de incêndios na região de estudo.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to define, by analyzing the influence of predictive factors like climate, topography, land use and human influence, a risk map to forest fires with the use of GIS techniques. According to the results, none of the predictors’ classes alone explains the spatial distribution of the occurrences. However, this study was able to show the influence of factors on the occurrence of forest fires. The generated maps show satisfactory efficiency in fire prediction in the study region.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os fatores que condicionam as ocorrências de incêndios em vegetação na área do Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB) e arredores, e através destas informações estabelecer a metodologia mais adequada para a geração de um mapa de risco de incêndios para o local. A elaboração do cartograma de risco de incêndios foi feita a partir do software ArcGIS 10.1, com a geração dos mapas de declividade, exposição das vertentes e de uso e cobertura do solo. Estes mapas foram intercruzados, possibilitando a determinação das áreas mais suscetíveis aos incêndios. As metodologias testadas variaram a forma de atribuição de notas para cada classe de previsão de incêndios, bem como a delimitação das classes de risco. De acordo com os resultados, a atribuição das notas de cada classe de previsão, em função do tamanho de sua área queimada, ou seja, levando-se em conta o histórico das ocorrências, refletiu mais satisfatoriamente o risco de incêndios em vegetação na região.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that affect the occurrence of fires in the vegetation, in the area of the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (PESB) and its surroundings, and through this information to establish the most appropriate methodology to generate a risk map for fires in the place. A risk cartogram for fires was developed with the help of the ArcGIS 10.1 software, by the generation of maps of slope, aspects and land use. These maps were intercrossed, enabling the determination of the areas most susceptible to fires. Tested methodologies varied in the form of assigning grades to each predictor class of fire as well as in the division of risk classes. According to the results, the assignment of notes to each predictor class, depending on the size of the burned area and taking into account the history of events, reflected the risk of fires in vegetation in the region more satisfactorily.

RESUMO Apesar da existência de diversos índices de perigo de incêndios, a utilização de um índice pouco eficiente pode levar à tomada de decisões equivocadas em relação aos procedimentos de prevenção e combate aos incêndios florestais, ao mesmo tempo que um índice de predição confiável pode ajudar na maior quantificação e distribuição dos recursos para a prevenção. Diante disto, o objetivo deste estudo é analisar a eficiência dos índices Fire Weather Index (FWI), Índice Logarítmico de Telicyn, Índice de Nesterov, índices acumulativos de precipitação menos evaporação (P-EVAP) e evaporação por precipitação (EVAP/P), Fórmula de Monte Alegre (FMA) e Fórmula de Monte Alegre Alterada (FMA+) na predição de incêndios florestais para o município de Viçosa (MG). Os índices foram comparados através do método conhecido como Skill Score (SS) levando em consideração os dias que os índices apontavam como de risco à ocorrências e os focos identificados por imagens de satélites no período de 01/01/2005 à 31/12/2014. De acordo com o Skill Score, o Índice Logaritmo de Telicyn (0,53257) foi o mais eficiente para a área de estudo, seguido pelos índices EVAP/P (0,46553), P-EVAP (0,43724), Nesterov (0,40445), FWI (0,39213), FMA+(0,34595) e FMA (0,28982).

ABSTRACT Despite the existence of different fire danger indices, the use of an inefficient index can lead to making wrong decisions on the appropriate procedures for preventing and fighting forest fires, while a trusted prediction index can help the most quantification and allocation of resources for prevention. Thereat, the objective of this study is to analyze the efficiency of Fire Weather Index (FWI), Logarithmic of Telicyn Index, Nesterov Index, cumulative indexes of precipitation - evaporation (P-EVAP) and evaporation / precipitation (EVAP/P), Monte Alegre Index (FMA) and Monte Alegre Changed Index (FMA+) in the prediction of forest fires for the city of Viçosa (MG). The indices were compared using the method known as Skill Score (SS) taking into account the days that the indexes pointed to the risk of events with focus fire identified by satellite images on the 01/01/2005 to 31/12/2014 period. According to the results, the Logarithm of Telicyn Index (0.53257) as the most efficient for the study area, followed by the indices EVAP/P (0.46553), P-EVAP (0.43724), Nesterov (0.40445), FWI (0.39213), FMA+(0.34595) and FMA (0.28982).

RESUMO Neste trabalho foi proposto um zoneamento para uma área protegida, que tem como missão a conservação da natureza e contém parte da Mata Atlântica residual, um hotspot mundial, que abriga diversas espécies da fauna e flora ameaçadas de extinção. Conflitando-se a esse uso, a área protegida é um importante atrativo turístico da região e recebe muitos visitantes ao longo do ano. Para a elaboração do zoneamento, foram estabelecidos os principais fatores e restrições de cada objetivo (ecoturismo e conservação) e utilizou-se de uma análise multicritério e do algoritmo MOLA (Multi-Objective Land Allocation) para estabelecer as áreas mais adequadas a cada uso. Foram estipuladas áreas de proteção extrema, através de uma interseção entre solos e vegetação endêmicas e altitudes superiores a 1500 m. Assim, obteve-se uma fração de 18% para as áreas destinadas a proteção extrema, 59% para a conservação e 23% para as destinadas ao desenvolvimento do ecoturismo. Os resultados explicitaram as vantagens da utilização desses métodos dada a sua simplicidade, podendo auxiliar os gestores no planejamento da área protegida. O zoneamento obtido está de acordo com a recomendação da IUCN, visto que a área de conservação correspondeu à aproximadamente 77% da área do parque, reforçando a adequabilidade e aplicabilidade da metodologia empregada para o objetivo de zoneamento de área protegidas.

ABSTRACT With the objective of promoting nature conservation, this study proposes an environmental zoning for a protected area that contains part of the remaining Atlantic Forest, a global hotspot that is home to several endangered species of flora and fauna. Conflicting therewith, the protected area is an important tourist attraction in the region and receives many visitors throughout the year. For the zoning preparation, the main factors and constraints of each objective (ecotourism and conservation) are established, and a multi-criteria analysis is used, in addition to the MOLA (Multi-Objective Land Allocation) algorithm, to establish the most suitable areas for each use. Extreme protection areas are defined through the intersection of endemic vegetation and soils and altitudes above 1,500 m. Thus, a fraction of 18% is obtained for extreme protection, 59% for conservation, and 23% for areas destined for ecotourism development. The results demonstrate the advantages of using these methods, due to their simplicity, which can support administrators in planning the protected area. The zoning is in accordance with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recommendation because the conservation area corresponds to approximately 77% of the park area, reinforcing the suitability and applicability of the methodology that is used for the zoning of a protected area.

O fogo é problema crescente nos diferentes tipos de formação vegetal em diversas partes do mundo. Apesar de anos de estudo científico e de toda atenção da mídia em relação aos incêndios em vegetação, os efeitos que tais fenômenos causam no ambiente não são completamente conhecidos, e as ferramentas de controle são pouco acessíveis a grande parte dos usuários. É fundamental saber o que condiciona as ocorrências, o que favorece a dispersão do fogo e o padrão de tais ocorrências, para possibilitar o mapeamento das áreas de risco e permitir o desenvolvimento de programas específicos para as regiões críticas. O objetivo deste estudo foi produzir um mapa de suscetibilidade a incêndios em vegetação, dentro do perímetro urbano do Município de Ubá, MG, com a utilização de informações referentes ao relevo, ao uso e cobertura do solo e à proximidade de vias de acesso e áreas urbanas, empregando técnicas de Geoprocessamento. A partir da validação do cartograma gerado, observou-se que 80% das ocorrências têm-se localizado nas áreas de alto e altíssimo risco, 15% nas de médio risco e 5% nas áreas de baixo e baixíssimo risco. Esse mapeamento servirá como ferramenta para o poder público estabelecer políticas de prevenção, atuando na conscientização da população e na definição de medidas de controle nas áreas de maior risco.

Fire is a growing problem in the different types of vegetation around the world. Despite years of scientific study and all the media attention in relation to forest fires, the effects they cause to the environment are not completely known, and the control tools are little accessible to most of the users. It is essential to know what is the cause of the fires, what makes the fire dispersion easier and the patterns of such fires to enable the mapping of the risk areas and allow the development of specific programs for these regions. Thus, the aim of this study was to produce a map of susceptibility of fires in vegetation within the urban perimeter of Ubá (MG), with the use of information related to relief and the use and land cover and proximity of access roads and urban areas, through geoprocessing techniques. From the validation of the generated cartogram, it was observed that 80% of the cases were located in areas of high and very high risk, 15% in medium risk and 5% in areas of low and very low risk. This mapping will serve as a tool for the government to establish prevention policies, operating in the public awareness and control measures definition in the higher risk areas.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de um retardante de fogo de longa duração em relação ao volume aplicado e ao tempo de aplicação. O experimento foi realizado nas dependências do Laboratório de Incêndios Florestais e de Conservação da Natureza/UFV, com aplicação da solução retardante a 600 e 900 ml/m2 e avaliada sua eficiência ao longo de quatro semanas, empregando-se cinco repetições. Parcelas de 3,0 x 1,0 m foram montadas em uma rampa com 27º de inclinação média, com o maior comprimento no sentido do aclive, utilizando como material combustível 1,20 kg/m2 de Melinis minutiflora Beauv., distribuído uniformemente sobre a parcela. A eficiência do produto foi avaliada comparando-se as quantidades aplicadas e o tempo de aplicação utilizando-se altura das chamas, velocidade, intensidade e tempo de queima, na porção com e sem o produto. Foi determinada a umidade relativa do ar e do material combustível no momento da queima. Os resultados mostraram que o tempo de aplicação não influenciou na ação do produto e que o tempo para a linha de fogo percorrer a parte da parcela com o produto foi, em média, 7 vezes mais lento que na parte sem o produto e a intensidade cerca de 8 vezes menor, apesar de o fogo percorrer toda a área. O mesmo aconteceu com a altura das chamas que foi três vezes mais baixa que na área sem o produto.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of fire retardant in relation to the applied volume and the application period. The experiment has been realized on the Forest Fire and Nature Conservation Laboratory of the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), in Minas Gerais, Brazil. After the solution application of 600 and 900ml/m² on five repetitions, the efficiency has been evaluated during four weeks. Parcels of 3,0 X 1,0 m have been built in a ramp with mean inclination of 27º. It has been spread 1,20kg/m² of Melinis minutiflora Beauv as burning fuel on the area. The product efficiency has been evaluated comparing the applied quantities and the application period observing the flames height, cover speed, burn intensity and burn period on the portions with and without the product. The relative air moisture and the fuel material moisture at the burn moment have been determined. The results have shown that the application period did not have influence on the product action. The mean period that the fire line took to cover the parcel with the product was, in average, seven times slower than the part without the product. The burn intensity was around eight times minor, despite the fire covered all area. The same occurred to the flames height which was three times lower than the area without the product.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se estabelecer o perfil dos incêndios florestais ocorridos no Parque Nacional da serra da Canastra, utilizando dados contidos nos Relatórios de Ocorrências de Incêndios de 1988 até 2008, cedidos pela unidade de conservação. Foram registradas 219 ocorrências, totalizando 415572,50 ha de área queimada, com média de 10,43 incêndios e 19789,17 ha queimados por ano. Em relação à área queimada, os incêndios causados por incendiários apresentaram o maior valor, seguido por queimas para limpeza de pastagens, raios e causa desconhecida. Considerando-se número de ocorrências, os incêndios decorrentes de raios apresentaram a maior frequência. Nos meses de setembro e agosto predominaram os incêndios causados por incendiários e de causa desconhecida, enquanto os incêndios naturais ocorreram principalmente nos meses de outubro e fevereiro e os decorrentes da queima para limpeza de pastagens se concentraram em julho. Os incêndios que atingiram maiores áreas foram observados em locais com maior declividade, enquanto os de menores proporções ocorreram em áreas planas e ou de relevos suaves. Quanto à localização, registrou-se o maior número de focos na área regularizada do parque, provavelmente por ser esta área a mais fiscalizada.

This study characterized the forest fires in the Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The data basis were the records of fire occurrence in 1988-2008 period. The results showed that 219 fires were recorded, burning 415,572.50 ha. In the average, 10.43 fires occurred per year, resulting in 19,789.17 ha burned. Incendiaries caused largest fires regarding the affected area, followed by fires caused by debris burning and lighting, that is first in number of occurrences. Fires caused by incendiaries and the unknown causes were more frequent in August and September. Fires caused by lightings occurred mainly in October and February, and those associated to debris burning were concentrated in the month of July. The largest fires occurred in areas with steep slopes, while the fires smaller than 4.0 ha, occurred in flat or smooth areas. Most of fires that occurred during the study period burned up to 200.000 ha and the larger fires occurred in the park region where the IBAMA (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e do Desenvolvimento Sustentável) already has the ownership or land control. These fires were possibly caused by incendiaries.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency of forest fire combat at ‘Serra da Canastra’ National Park, through records of fire occurrence in the time period between 1988 and 2008. Three parameters were used: burned area, time of first attack, and combat time. Most fires in the park burned areas up 200 ha. The fires reached greater proportions on regularized topography land. The median time of first attack was 252.47 minutes and tended to be shorter non-regularized topography land. In about 60% of the cases, the fire duration was longer than eight hours.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a eficiência de combate aos incêndios florestais no Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, por meio dos registros de ocorrência de incêndios referentes ao período de 1988 a 2008. Foram utilizados três parâmetros: área queimada, tempo de ataque e tempo de combate. A maioria dos incêndios ocorridos no parque atingiu áreas superiores a 200 ha. Na área regularizada, os incêndios atingiram maiores proporções. O tempo médio de ataque foi de 252,47 minutos e tendeu a ser menor na área não regularizada. Em quase 60% dos incêndios, foram necessárias mais de oito horas para combatê-los.

Os incêndios florestais no Brasil tornam-se a cada ano mais críticos, com o aumento da extensão da área queimada e os consequentes danos ao ambiente e à sociedade. A ocorrência e propagação dos incêndios florestais estão fortemente associadas às condições climáticas ou fatores climáticos. Entre as influências que o clima pode exercer sobre as ocorrências, destaca-se a distribuição do conteúdo de umidade da vegetação morta, que constitui o principal combustível dos incêndios. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o índice de correlação entre os fatores meteorológicos e as ocorrências de incêndios florestais dentro da área urbana do Município de Juiz de Fora. Para a sua realização foi utilizada uma série temporal abrangendo o período de 1995 a 2004. De acordo com os resultados, a umidade relativa do ar foi o elemento que mais se correlacionou com as ocorrências. A precipitação e a diferença entre precipitação e evaporação mostraram-se mais correlacionadas com os incêndios quando analisadas a sua acumulação dentro de um período de 10 dias antes de cada ocorrência. A utilização de elementos isolados apresentou baixa correlação com os incêndios, evidenciando a utilização de modelos que agrupem os elementos climáticos para a predição das ocorrências.

Forest fires in Brazil become more critical every year, with the increase of the extension of burned areas and the consequent damages to the atmosphere and society. The occurrence and propagation of forest fires are strongly associated with climatic factors or conditions. Among the influences that the climate can exercise on the occurrences is the distribution of dead vegetation humidity, which constitutes the main fuel of fires. The objective of this study was to compare the correlation index between the meteorological factors and the occurrences of forest fires in the urban area of the district of Juiz de Fora. To accomplish the study, a temporary series was used, including the period from 1995 to 2004. According to the results, the relative humidity of the air was the element that showed most correlation with the occurrences. The precipitation and the difference between precipitation and evaporation showed more correlation with the fires when analyzing its accumulation within the period of 10 days before each occurrence. The use of isolated elements presented a low correlation with the fires, suggesting the use of models containing climatic elements for the prediction of the occurrences.
