ABSTRACT Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is a species with promising potential for commercial production; therefore, studies involving practices of conducting culture in the initial stage are essential. The present study aimed to evaluate different shading levels and substrate compositions in the seedling production of tamarind. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4×4 factorial scheme, four levels of shading (0%, 18%, 30%, and 50%) and four substrates (pine bark-based substrate pure and mixed with 50% vermiculite, and sphagnum peat-based substrate pure and mixed with 50% vermiculite), with four replicates of four seedlings. Growth and biometric relationships were evaluated at 40 and 98 d after transplantation (DAT). The results reported that seedlings formed on the sphagnum peat-based substrate on pure or associated with vermiculite at 98 DAT had a height greater than 35 cm and a total 8.5 g DM. In contrast, seedlings produced in pine bark-based substrate did not reach 20 cm in height and had less than 3 g total DM. The condition of 30% and 50% shading promoted greater growth in height, reaching an average height greater than 40 cm, while in the full sun environment, seedlings showed an average of less than 35 cm; however, for the other variables, full sun environment did not differ from 30% shading, producing good quality seedlings. Thus, the cultivation of seedlings in an environment with 0% or 30% shading, associated with the sphagnum peat-based substrate pure or mixed with 50% vermiculite promoted the production of tamarind seedlings with vigorous growth. In the best environments, the best substrates increased, on average, 41.3% number of leaves, 80.5% shoot dry mass, 56.8% root dry mass, and 71.0% total dry mass. In the best substrates, the best environments increased, on average, 18.0% number of leaves, 20.7% shoot dry mass, 8.7% root dry mass, and 14.3% total dry mass.

Abstract This article aims to estimate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MD) on the adult population of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, verifying associated demographic and socioeconomic factors, and to analyze their impact on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) according to sex. A population-based study was conducted with 2,166 individuals using data from the ISACamp 2014/15. The Medical Outcomes Study SF-36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to measure HRQoL according to MD. Prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated by Poisson regression. Musculoskeletal disorders had a prevalence of 8.5% (6.7% tendonitis and 2.7% work-related musculoskeletal disorders - WMSD). Results showed a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in women, active or on leave due to illness, and in individuals with higher education levels. Moreover, reduced HRQoL scores were observed in 6 of the 8 domains, due to MD. The mental component and physical component showed greater impairment respectively among women and men after self-reported WMSD. These findings point to substantial damage from musculoskeletal disorders on the population’s HRQoL. WMSD affect the HRQoL of men and women distinctly.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é estimar a prevalência de doenças musculoesqueléticas (DM) na população adulta de Campinas/SP, Brasil, verificar fatores demográficos e socioeconômicos associados e analisar o seu impacto na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde (QVRS) segundo sexo. Este é um estudo de base populacional utilizando dados do ISACamp 2014/15, com 2.166 indivíduos. Para a medida de QVRS, foram calculados os escores médios do Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) segundo as DM e utilizada a regressão de Poisson para estimar as razões de prevalência (RP). A prevalência de DM foi de 8,5% (6,7% de tendinite e 2,7% de doenças osteomusculares relacionadas ao trabalho - DORT). Os resultados deste estudo mostraram maior prevalência de DM em mulheres, na população adulta ativa ou afastada por doença e em indivíduos com maior escolaridade. Além disso, observou-se redução nos escores de QVRS, devido às DM, em quase todos os domínios do instrumento. O maior comprometimento foi observado no componente mental entre as mulheres, e no componente físico, entre os homens, após autorrelato de DORT. Os achados mostram o impacto substancial das DM na QVRS da população. As DORT afetam distintamente a QVRS de homens e mulheres.

Abstract Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the main causes of morbi-mortality worldwide. In this study, we aim to verify if the COVID-19 pandemic had repercussions on the metabolic and cardiovascular control of patients with type 2 diabetes at USF Garcia de Orta, from ACeS Porto-Ocidental. Methods: Cross-sectional observational analytical study. The study’s population consists of patients registered at the USF GO with the diagnosis of DM (ICPC-2 code T89 and T90) in the list of active problems. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the sample was obtained by simple randomization. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), LDL-cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), systolic (BP) and diastolic (DP) blood pressure values recorded in a pre-pandemic period were compared with those in a pandemic period. Results: The sample consisted of 218 patients, with a mean age of 70.9 ± 11.1 years. The median of HbA1c (6.75 vs 6.80) and LDL-cholesterol (82.80 vs 91.60) was lower in the pandemic period. The opposite was verified in relation to the BMI, with the highest median in the pandemic period (27.03 vs 26.87). Only the analysis of cholesterol-LDL obtained a statistically significant result. On average, the values of BP (134.06 vs 133.41) and DP (77.97 vs 76.59) were higher in the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period, although without statistical significance. Discussion: With the exception of BMI, BP and DP, there was an improvement in the pandemic period. In the literature found, there are contradictory results on the impact of the pandemic on the variables studied. These results may reflect the quality of the teleconsultations carried out during the pandemic period and/or the effort of diabetics to maintain healthy habits. Conclusion: We cannot conclude that, in the period evaluated, the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the metabolic and cardiovascular control of patients with DM2 in our population.

Resumo Introdução: A diabetes mellitus é uma das principais causas de morbimortalidade em todo o mundo. Pretende-se verificar se a pandemia COVID-19 teve repercussões no controlo metabólico e cardiovascular dos doentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) da USF Garcia de Orta (GO), do ACeS Porto Ocidental. Método: Estudo observacional, transversal, analítico. A população do estudo corresponde aos utentes inscritos na USF GO com o diagnóstico de DM (código T89 e T90 da ICPC-2) na lista de problemas ativos. Depois de aplicados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão obteve-se a amostra por aleatorização simples. Foram comparados valores de hemoglobina glicada (HbA1c), colesterol-LDL, índice de massa corporal (IMC), pressão arterial sistólica (PAs) e diastólica (PAd), registados num período pré-pandémico com os de um período pandémico. Resultados: A amostra foi de 218 pacientes, com média de idades de 70,9 ±11,1 anos. Na amostra a mediana de HbA1c (6,75 vs 6,80) e do colesterol-LDL (82,80 vs 91,60) foi inferior no período pandémico. Verificando-se o oposto em relação ao IMC, com a mediana superior no período pandémico (27,03 vs 26,87). Apenas na análise do colesterol-LDL se obteve um resultado estatisticamente significativo. Na análise do controlo tensional, em média, os valores de PAs (134.06 vs 133.41) e PAd (77.97 vs 76.59) foram superiores no período pandémico face ao pré-pandémico, mas sem significado estatístico. Discussão: No estudo encontrou-se, à exceção do IMC, da PAs e da PAd, uma melhoria dos valores no período pandémico. Em relação ao impacto da pandemia nas variáveis estudadas estão descritos na literatura resultados contraditórios. Estes resultados podem refletir a qualidade das teleconsultas realizadas no período pandémico e/ou no esforço dos diabéticos por manter hábitos saudáveis. Conclusão: Não se pode afirmar que, no período avaliado, a pandemia COVID-19 teve impacto negativo no controlo metabólico e cardiovascular dos pacientes com DM2 da população estudada.

ABSTRACT Ensilage of refused fruit with forage is a viable approach to increase resource use in ruminant feed. The use of refused melon (Cucumis melo L. subsp. melo var. inodorus H. Jacq.) fruit (RMF), ensiled at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, or 8% of natural matter with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), was assessed in terms of chemical- bromatological composition and fermentative profile. Experimental silos filled with mixtures and hermetically sealed were used. After 34 d of fermentation, the silos were opened, and samples were analyzed. Dry matter concentration shows a quadratic increase (P < 0.05) with RMF inclusion in sorghum silage rising from 30.83% to 32.08% at 4% of RMF inclusion, followed by a reduction in the subsequent levels. There was a linear increase (P < 0.05) in ether extract, total digestible nutrients, digestible energy, metabolizable energy, and in vitro digestibility of DM and organic matter, increasing respectively 3.96%, 5.32%, 0.25 Mcal kg-1, 0.19 Mcal kg-1, 1.89% and 0.74% from 0% to 8% of RMF inclusion. There was a linear reduction (P < 0.05) of neutral detergent fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin with RMF inclusion. We also observed a linear increase (P < 0.05) in ammoniacal N, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and lactic acid concentrations in silage with the addition of RMF. The inclusion of RMF improved the chemical-bromatological composition and fermentative profile of sorghum silage, and an inclusion level of 8% is recommended.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional changes in silages of four sorghum hybrids at different storage times. The design was a completely randomized in a 4 × 9 arrangement of plots with four replications. The four sorghum hybrids, Qualysilo, Chopper, Dominator, and Maxisilo, were allocated to the plots. In the subplots, sampling times were considered in fresh material and after 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, 112, and 224 days of storage. The material was ensiled in experimental polyvinyl chloride silos and subsequently evaluated for chemical composition and fermentative profile over the nine different periods of the fermentation process. Crude protein was reduced by 1.21g/kg per day until the third day of fermentation. The levels of neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen exceeded the upper limit of 311 g/kg of N. Of the studied silages, an NDF content of 734 g/kg was obtained in Maxisilo, which was higher than the other silages (average: 547 g/kg). Silage production can be achieved with the four materials; however, the Maxisilo sorghum provides silages of lower quality, with a DM content of less than 30%. The other materials fit into the nutritional profiles proposed by the literature, characterizing them as good quality silages.

ABSTRACT The objectives were to evaluate the effects of monensin and virginiamycin, alone or combined, on supplemented Nellore cattle grazing tropical grass during the rainy season. Two experiments were conducted simultaneously to evaluate intake, digestibility, CH4 emissions, blood parameters, performance, and carcass characteristics (Exp. 1), and ruminal fermentation and relative abundance of ruminal microorganisms (Exp. 2). Animals (n = 92 Exp. 1 and n = 12 Exp. 2) were distributed in a completely randomized design and allocated in twelve paddocks composed of Urochloa brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Xaraés. A protein-energetic supplementation of 3 g/kg of BW per day was provided to all animals. Supplements were: without additives (WA), monensin alone at 80 mg/kg of product (MN), virginiamycin alone at 150 mg/kg of product (VM), and monensin (80 mg/kg of product) combined with virginiamycin (150 mg/kg of product; MNVM). Treatments did not affect intakes of total dry matter (DM), supplement DM, and nutrients. However, the intakes of forage DM and crude protein decreased in cattle fed MNVM compared with animals fed WA, MN, and VM. Total volatile fatty acids increased in animals fed VM. Ruminal NH3-N decreased, and pH increased in animals fed MN, VM, and MNVM. Relative abundance of total F. succinogenes and S. ruminantium decreased and R. flavefaciens increased in animals fed MN and VM at d 118. Treatments had no effect on enteric CH4 emissions. The average daily gain (ADG) and total gain were greater in cattle fed MNVM than in cattle fed MN. Combination of monensin and virginiamycin altered the rumen microbial populations but did not decrease enteric CH4 emissions. However, it decreased forage dry matter intake without altering the ADG and total weight gain, leading to an increase in feed efficiency. Results from this study indicate an advantage in including feed additives combined in the diet of supplemented Nellore cattle grazing tropical grass during the rainy season.

Abstract Diabetes is characterized by increased levels of oxidative stress. Its suggested that extract of cupuaçu could improve the antioxidant system in diabetes. The aim was to evaluate the effect of EC on Nrf2/NF-κB p65 in normal and diabetic rats. Male, adult Wistar rats (9-week-old) were distributed in 4 groups: control (CTL) and diabetic (DM) who received water; CTLEC and DMEC who received 1 mL/day of EC (1 g/mL), via gavage for 8 consecutive weeks. The diabetes was inducted with a single intravenous dose of 45 mg/kg streptozotocin. Glycemia and body weight were measured at the beginning and end of the protocol, and the renal tissue was analyzed by Western blot for SOD-1, SOD-2, CAT, GSSG, Nrf2, NF-κB p65, iNOS and 3-NT. Glycemia was reduced in DMEC vs. DM after 8 weeks of EC treatment. There was no difference in body weight of DMEC vs. DM; however, DMEC vs. DM presented increased levels of CAT and Nrf2, with a significant reduction of NF-κB p65, iNOS and 3-NT. Therefore, we suggest that EC could be utilized as a complementary therapy to ameliorate the antioxidant profile via Nrf2 and to delay the evolution of diabetic complications in renal tissue by inflammatory pathway inhibition.

ABSTRACT Breast cancer (BC) is the most common neoplasm in women globally. Healthy eating, a characteristic of the Mediterranean diet (MD), has been associated with a lower risk of developing BC, although this relationship remains inconclusive. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between MD adherence and the risk of BC development. A case-control study was carried out with 181 women divided into two groups: with BC (n= 90) and without breast cancer (WBC) (n= 91). Clinical and reproductive aspects were investigated through interviews, and food consumption was assessed through a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Adherence to the MD was evaluated using the MD score. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS® software, with p<0.05. The results showed that the main type of breast carcinoma was invasive ductal carcinoma, positive for oestrogen or progesterone receptors. The mean MD score was 4.08 ± 1.61 and 4.22 ± 1.69 among women with BC and without BC, respectively, with no difference between the groups. The risk assessment of BC with respect to adherence to MD showed no significant difference after adjustments were made in the logistic regression models. In conclusion, this study showed that women with and without breast cancer had “medium adherence” to MD, with no difference between the groups. In the group of women investigated, adherence to MD did not affect the risk of developing the disease.

RESUMEN El cáncer de mama (CM) es la neoplasia más frecuente entre las mujeres del mundo, y la alimentación saludable, característica del patrón de la dieta mediterránea (DM), se ha asociado con un menor riesgo de desarrollar CM, aunque esta relación sigue sin ser concluyente. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar la relación entre la adherencia a la DM y el riesgo para el desarrollo de CM. Estudio de casos y controles realizados con 181 mujeres divididas en dos grupos: con cáncer de mama (n=90) y sin cáncer de mama (SCM; n= 91). Los aspectos clínicos y reproductivos se evaluaron a través de una entrevista; consumo de alimentos a través del cuestionario de frecuencia alimentaria (FFQ) y adherencia a la dieta mediterránea evaluada según la puntuación de DM. El análisis estadístico se realizó mediante el software SPSS®, considerando valores significativos de p<0,05. Los resultados mostraron que el principal tipo de carcinoma de mama fue el carcinoma ductal invasivo, positivo para el receptor de estrógenos y progesterona. La puntuación media de DM fue de 4,08 ± 1,61 entre las mujeres con CM y de 4,22 ± 1,69 entre las que no tenían la enfermedad, sin diferencia entre los grupos. La evaluación del riesgo de CM en relación con la adherencia a la DM mostró que, después de ajustes en los modelos de regresión logística, no hubo diferencia significativa. En conclusión, el estudio muestra que las mujeres con y sin CM tuvieron “adherencia media” a la DM, sin diferencia entre los grupos. También mostró que, en el grupo de mujeres investigadas, la adherencia a la DM no influyó en el riesgo para el desarrollo de la enfermedad.

ABSTRACT Melatonin (ML) is an indolamine that regulates a wide range of physiological processes as growth of roots and shoots, antioxidant enzyme activity, seed germination, photosynthetic efficiency promoting stress tolerance in plants, mitigating the harmful effects of abiotic stress. Effects of pretreatment of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seeds with 10, 30, 60 and 90 μM ML were evaluated in seedlings under osmotic stress measuring germination speed index, and root protrusion, growth, and DM. Under osmotic stress, ML increased germination speed index at 10 (239%), 30 (194%) and 60 μM ML (189%); 5th-day root protrusion by 290%, 214%, 185% and 85% (10, 30, 60, and 90 μM ML respectively). The application of 10 (328%), 30 (224%), 60 (265%), 90 μM ML (129%) increased root length, followed by root DM in stressed seedlings. Drought stress reduced photosynthetic efficiency, increased ROS, and reduced antioxidant enzymatic activities in soybean. In a second experiment, well-watered (100% field capacity) (WW) and drought stressed (DS) soybean plants received 30 and 50 μM ML. Melatonin increased rate of CO2 assimilation and net photosynthetic rate at 30 μM ML (WW) in 28% (2 d after application) and 50 μM ML (DS) in 48% (5 d after application). Melatonin increased antioxidant enzymes activity (catalase and peroxidase) in plants under drought stress. The ML application enhanced leaf area in WW plants, however decreased in stressed plants. An increased number of seeds, pod numbers, total seed mass, root DM were observed under WW. Drought stress increased numbers of seeds (27%), pod numbers (33%) and total seeds mass (27%) with 30 μM ML. These results demonstrated that ML mitigated negative effects produced by drought on germination and growth of soybean seedlings, and acted as a drought tolerance inducer, improving yield under stress condition.

Abstract This study was carried out to evaluate the time for the establishment of tropical forage grasses in the “Cerrado” biome, based on morphogenetic and structural traits. Three Brachiaria brizantha (Syn. Urochloa brizantha) cultivars (Paiaguás, Ipyporã and Marandu) and two Panicum maximum (Syn. Megathyrsus maximus) cultivars (Quênia and Tamani) were distributed in a randomized-block design with four replicates. Morphogenetic and structural traits of the pasture were assessed from d 35 to d 65 after sowing, at seven-day interval. Canopy height rose linearly with the establishment period, in all cultivars. In the Megathyrsus cultivars, tiller density decreased as the experimental period progressed, whereas the number of tillers in the Urochloa cultivars increased. The cultivars Ipyporã and Marandu had the highest leaf appearance rates. The lowest leaf elongation rates occurred in the cultivars Paiaguás, Ipyporã and Tamani, and the highest elongation rates in cv. Quênia. As a result, cv. Quênia showed the highest values of final leaf length (64.9 cm) and leaf blade mass (3,352.9 kg DM ha-1). The higher senescence rate of cv. Tamani (2.1 cm tiller-1 d-1) resulted in the highest percentage of dead material (1,815.5 kg ha-1) being found in the herbage mass of this cultivar. Cultivars Paiaguás, Marandu and Tamani were established at 44 d, whereas cv. Quênia and Ipyporã were established at 51 and 58 d after sowing, respectively, in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Resumen Este estudio se llevó a cabo para evaluar el tiempo para el establecimiento de gramíneas forrajeras tropicales en el bioma del “Cerrado”, con base en rasgos morfogenéticos y estructurales. Se distribuyeron tres cultivares (Paiaguás, Ipyporã y Marandu) de Brachiaria brizantha (Sin. Urochloa brizantha) y dos cultivares (Quênia y Tamani) de Panicum maximum (Sin. Megathyrsus maximus) en un diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Los rasgos morfogenéticos y estructurales del pasto se evaluaron desde el día 35 hasta el día 65 después de la siembra, a intervalos de siete días. La altura del dosel aumentó linealmente con el período de establecimiento, en todos los cultivares. En los cultivares de Megathyrsus, la densidad de macollos disminuyó a medida que avanzaba el período experimental, mientras que el número de macollos en los cultivares de Urochloa aumentó. Los cultivares Ipyporã y Marandu tuvieron las tasas más altas de aparición foliar. Las tasas de elongación foliar más bajas se presentaron en los cultivares Paiaguás, Ipyporã y Tamani, y las tasas de elongación más altas en el cv. Quênia. Como resultado, el cv. Quênia mostró los valores más altos de longitud foliar final (64.9 cm) y masa de lámina foliar (3,352.9 kg MS ha-1). La mayor tasa de senescencia del cv. Tamani (2.1 cm macollo-1 d-1) dio como resultado que el mayor porcentaje de material muerto (1,815.5 kg ha-1) se encontrara en la masa de forraje de este cultivar. Los cultivares Paiaguás, Marandu y Tamani se establecieron a los 44 d, mientras que los cv. Quênia e Ipyporã se establecieron a los 51 y 58 días después de la siembra, respectivamente, en el Cerrado brasileño.

ABSTRACT The use of agroindustrial byproducts in cattle diets, such as castor-bean (Ricinus communis L.) meal, is a more sustainable practice because it does not compete with human food and reduces the volume of organic waste deposited in the environment. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of replacing soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) meal with castor-bean meal on the intake, digestibility, feeding behavior and performance of crossbred steers supplemented while on Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster ‘Marandu’ pasture. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete design with 40 animals, which started the experiment weighing 227.1 kg, at 10 mo of age, and were divided into four treatment groups. Castor-bean meal was added to replace soybean meal at the levels of 0, 90, 180, and 280 g kg-1 in the supplement, which was supplied at the rate of 0.4% of body weight. Total DM, pasture DM and neutral detergent fiber intakes did not change (P > 0.05) with the castor-bean levels added to the supplement. Ether extract intake and digestibility decreased linearly (P < 0.05). The animals showed no differences (P > 0.05) in production performance (average daily gain), which averaged 0.65 kg d-1. Grazing, idle, and rumination times were not influenced (P > 0.05) by the treatments. Castor-bean meal can be included up to 280 g kg-1 in the total diet without changing the performance of crossbred steers finished on tropical pasture.

RESUMO A diabetes mellitus (DM) causa diversas limitações funcionais, que podem impactar negativamente na vida pessoal e profissional do indivíduo, acarretando mais complicações e incapacidades. O objetivo do estudo foi identificar em quais domínios do World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule versão 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) os indivíduos com DM apresentam as maiores incapacidades. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo transversal com 111 pessoas com diagnóstico da doença, independentemente do tipo. Foram aplicados um questionário sociodemográfico e o WHODAS 2.0 com 36 questões, para avaliar as dificuldades apresentadas nos últimos 30 dias. A amostra foi composta predominantemente pelo sexo feminino (60,3%) e classificada como independente na comunidade (90,1%). A maior prevalência foi de indivíduos aposentados (35,1%). O domínio mobilidade apresentou o maior comprometimento (48±23), enquanto o domínio atividades de vida apresentou o menor comprometimento (28±13). Porém, para todos os domínios, o comprometimento ficou abaixo de 50, em uma escala que varia de 0 a 100. Todos os indivíduos com DM apresentaram alguma deficiência, havendo maior comprometimento do domínio relacionado à mobilidade.

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes several functional limitations, which can negatively affect the personal and professional life of individuals. This effect can lead to more complications and disabilities. This study aimed to analyze in which domains of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule version 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) individuals with diabetes mellitus have the greatest disabilities. cross-sectional study was performed with 111 individuals with diabetes mellitus, of any type. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the WHODAS 2.0 with 36 questions were applied to assess individuals’ difficulties in the last 30 days. Most individuals were women (60.3%) and classified as independent in the community (90.1%). The highest prevalence was among retired individuals (35.1%). The mobility domain presented the highest impairment (48±23) whereas the life activities domain presented the lowest impairment (28±13). However, for all domains, the impairment was below 50 on a scale ranging from zero to 100. All individuals with diabetes mellitus showed some disability, but the greatest impairment was in the mobility domain.

RESUMEN La diabetes mellitus (DM) causa varias limitaciones funcionales que pueden impactar negativamente la vida personal y profesional del individuo, ocasionándole más complicaciones e incapacidades. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar en qué dominios del World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, versión 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), las personas con DM presentan las mayores incapacidades. Para ello, se realizó un estudio transversal con 111 personas diagnosticadas con la enfermedad, independientemente del tipo. Se aplicaron un cuestionario sociodemográfico y WHODAS 2.0 con 36 preguntas para evaluar las dificultades presentadas en los últimos 30 días. La muestra fue predominantemente femenina (60,3%) y clasificada como independiente en la comunidad (90,1%). La mayor prevalencia fue de individuos jubilados (35,1%). El dominio movilidad tuvo mayor comprometimiento (48±23), mientras que el dominio actividades de la vida presentó el menor comprometimiento (28±13). Sin embargo, para todos los dominios, el comprometimiento fue inferior a 50 en una escala que varía de 0 a 100. Todos los individuos con DM presentaron una discapacidad, con mayor implicación del dominio relacionado con la movilidad.

Resumo Introdução: Diabetes mellitus (DM) é uma doença crônica caracterizada por hiperglicemia levando à nefropatia diabética (ND). Mostramos que P2X7, um receptor purinérgico, foi altamente expresso na DM; entretanto, quando o estresse oxidativo foi controlado, o NO renal recuperou-se, e a ativação deste receptor permaneceu significativamente reduzida. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a influência do NO no P2X7 e a apoptose em células mesangiais imortalizadas de camundongos (CMiC) cultivadas em meio de glicose elevada (GE). Métodos: CMiCs foram cultivadas em meio DMEM e expostas à glicose normal (GN), manitol (MA), ou GE. A viabilidade celular foi avaliada por contador automático. Sobrenadantes foram coletados para quantificação de NO, e foram extraídas proteínas para análise de NO sintases (iNOS e eNOS), caspase-3, e P2X7. Resultados: A viabilidade celular permaneceu acima de 90% em todos os grupos. Houve aumento significativo na proliferação de células na GE comparado com MA e GN. NO, iNOS, caspase-3 e P2X7 foram significativamente aumentados na GE comparados com GN e MA, sem alterações na eNOS. Observamos que houve correlação forte e significativa entre P2X7 e NO. Discussão: O principal achado foi que a produção de NO pela iNOS foi positivamente correlacionada com aumento de P2X7 em CMs sob condições de GE, mostrando que existe um estímulo comum entre eles e que o NO interage com a via do P2X7, contribuindo para apoptose na DM experimental. Estes achados podem ser relevantes para estudos de alvos terapêuticos para a prevenção e/ou tratamento de danos renais induzidos por hiperglicemia para retardar a progressão da ND.

Abstract Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia that leads to diabetic nephropathy (DN). We showed that P2X7, a purinergic receptor, was highly expressed in DM; however, when oxidative stress was controlled, renal NO recovered, and the activation of this receptor remained significantly reduced. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of NO on the P2X7 and apoptosis in mouse immortalized mesangial cells (MiMC) cultured in high glucose (HG) medium. Methods: MiMCs were cultured with DMEM and exposed to normal glucose (NG), mannitol (MA), or HG. Cell viability was assessed by an automated counter. Supernatants were collected for NO quantification, and proteins were extracted for analysis of NO synthases (iNOS and eNOS), caspase-3, and P2X7. Results: Cell viability remained above 90% in all groups. There was a significant increase in the proliferation of cells in HG compared to MA and NG. NO, iNOS, caspase-3, and P2X7 were significantly increased in HG compared to NG and MA, with no changes in eNOS. We observed that there was a strong and significant correlation between P2X7 and NO. Discussion: The main finding was that the production of NO by iNOS was positively correlated with the increase of P2X7 in MCs under HG conditions, showing that there is a common stimulus between them and that NO interacts with the P2X7 pathway, contributing to apoptosis in experimental DM. These findings could be relevant to studies of therapeutic targets for the prevention and/or treatment of hyperglycemia-induced kidney damage to delay DN progression.

Resumo Contexto O pé diabético é uma complicação do diabetes melito (DM), sendo a maior causa de amputação dos membros inferiores. Objetivos Avaliar a prática de medidas de autocuidado com os pés, segundo sexo e escolaridade, em pacientes portadores de DM na região nordeste no estado da Bahia. Métodos Estudo quantitativo, observacional, analítico, transversal, realizado com 88 pacientes portadores de DM, em consulta de rotina, de fevereiro a março de 2020. A coleta de dados foi executada através da aplicação de questionários socioeconômico e do autocuidado com os pés (conhecimento sobre pé diabético, hábitos de cuidado/inspeção dos pés e procura pela Unidade de Saúde na presença de alterações com a saúde dos pés). Resultados Do total, 58% dos indivíduos desconhecia o termo “pé diabético”, porém possuíam cuidados mínimos adequados com os pés, como inspecioná-los (60,2%), hidratá-los (65,9%), não andar descalço (81,8%) e cortar as unhas (92%), apesar de 90,9% não utilizar sapatos considerados adequados. Houve relação entre menor nível de escolaridade e pior desempenho nas questões referentes a andar descalço, hidratar os pés, cortar as unhas, usar calçados adequados e identificar micoses (p < 0,05), porém não houve associação da realização das medidas de autocuidado e sexo. Conclusão Os portadores de DM entrevistados não realizaram todas as medidas de autocuidado com os pés e desconheciam o termo “pé diabético”. Houve associação entre menor escolaridade e menor capacidade de realização dessas medidas, o que sugere que o letramento em saúde seria importante para melhoria desse autocuidado, contribuindo para diminuição de complicações e amputações dos pés.

Abstract Background The diabetic foot is a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and is the most common cause of lower limb amputation. Objectives To assess foot self-care practices by sex and educational level in DM patients from the Northeast of Brazil, state of Bahia. Methods This was a quantitative, cross-sectional, observational, analytical study with 88 DM patients seen at routine consultations from February to March of 2020. Data were collected using questionnaires on socioeconomic data and self-care of feet (knowledge about the diabetic foot, habits related to care/inspection of feet, and visits to the Healthcare Center when changes to foot health are detected). Results 58% of the sample did not know the term “diabetic foot”, but a majority did perform minimum adequate foot care practices, such as inspecting feet (60.2%), moisturizing feet (65.9%), avoiding walking barefoot (81.8%), and trimming toenails (92%), although 90.9% did not wear footwear considered appropriate. There was a relationship between lower educational level and worse performance in questions relating to walking barefoot, moisturizing feet, trimming toenails, wearing appropriate footwear, and identifying mycoses (p < 0.05), but there was no association between performing self-care activities and sex. Conclusions Interviewed patientswith DM did not perform all foot self-care activities and did not know what the term “diabetic foot” means. There was an association between lower educational level and reduced capacity to perform these activities, which suggests that health literacy is important to improve self-care of feet, contributing to reduce complications and foot amputations.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with increasing levels (0%, 33%, 67%, and 100%) of sugarcane yeast and urea on the intake, performance, and feeding behaviour of buffalo heifers. Twenty Murrah female buffalos with an initial average weight of 157 ± 1.9 kg at 7 months old were distributed in a completely randomized design. The experimental period was 84 days, and was preceded with 30 days of adaptation. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression, using the GLM and REG procedures of SAS software at 5% probability level. The replacement of SBM with sugarcane yeast did not have a significant effect on the intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter and crude protein (CP). Non-fibrous carbohydrate intake increased linearly, whereas the intake of neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and ether extract (EE) decreased linearly. There was no treatment effect on average daily gain or feed conversion (FCR). Rumination efficiency on nondetergent fibre (NDF) decreased linearly. The times spent ruminating, remaining idle, and feeding were not influenced by the treatments, and neither were the parameters of feeding efficiency as a function of DM and NDF intakes and rumination efficiency as a function of DM intake. Dry sugarcane yeast and urea could replace SBM fully in the diet of buffalo heifers with a roughage to concentrate ratio of 50 : 50, because animal performance would not be affected.
