With the increase in life expectancy and the significant incidence of lesions of the musculoskeletal system, both the public and private sectors seek improvements in their products and processes in order to contribute to the health of the population. Every year tons of chicken eggshell (CES) from domestic consumption are released in environment and the present work aims the production of a synthetic ceramic bone substitute using the eggshell as a source of calcium ions. According to the methodology, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol% of iron ions were used and the characterization assays demonstrated the formation of a double calcium iron phosphate - Ca9Fe(PO4)7. MG63 cells were cultured on test specimens to cell viability assay and to each doped group analyzed, verifying cell compatibility with the studied compounds, as well as a good adhesion profile. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the cells showed that material surface favored cell adhesion and the results demonstrated that the production of the compounds were viable to Ca9Fe(PO4)7 phase. ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with high concentrations of salts in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil limits the expansion of irrigated agriculture. Therefore, it is extremely important to look for strategies capable of mitigating the effects of salt stress on plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of foliar application of salicylic acid in inducing tolerance of guava seedlings irrigated with water of distinct cationic composition. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions using a randomized block design in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, with five cationic compositions of irrigation water (S1 - Control tap water, S2 - Na++Ca2++Mg2+, S3 - Na++Ca2+, S4 - Ca2++Mg2+, and S5 - Na++Mg2+), so as to have equivalent ratios of 7:2:1 relative to Na++Ca2++Mg2+ and 1:1 relative to other combinations, respectively maintaining electrical conductivity - ECw at 3.0 dS m-1, and five concentrations of salicylic acid (0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and 3.2 mM), with three replications and two plants per plot. Electrolyte leakage, succulence, and chlorophyll a fluorescence signals increased in guava seedlings irrigated with water up to 3.0 dS m-1. Water with ECw of 3.0 dS m-1 can be used to produce guava seedlings with acceptable quality for transplanting to the field, regardless of its constitution. RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com concentrações elevadas de sais no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro limita a expansão da agricultura irrigada. Dessa forma, é de extrema importância a busca por estratégias capazes de amenizar os efeitos do estresse salino nas plantas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os efeitos da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico na indução de tolerância em mudas de goiabeira irrigadas com águas de distintas composições catiônicas da água. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições de casa de vegetação, utilizando o delineamento de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco composições catiônicas da água de irrigação (S1 - Testemunha água de abastecimento; S2 - Na++Ca2++Mg2+; S3 - Na++Ca2+; S4 - Ca2++Mg2+ e S5 - Na++Mg2+), de modo a se ter uma proporção equivalente de 7:2:1, entre Na++Ca2++Mg2+ e de 1:1 entre outras combinações, respectivamente, mantendo condutividade elétrica - CEa de 3.0 dS m-1 e cinco concentrações de ácido salicílico (0; 0,8; 1,6; 2,4 e 3,2 mM) com 3 repetições e duas plantas por parcelas. O extravasamento de eletrólitos, a suculência e os sinais de fluorescência da clorofila a aumentaram nas mudas de goiabeira irrigadas com água de 3,0 dS m-1. RESUMO Os resíduos da mineração de vermiculita, embora de baixa solubilidade, contêm nutrientes como cálcio, magnésio e potássio em concentrações que permitem seu uso agrícola. Bactérias benéficas podem aumentar a solubilidade deste resíduo e sua eficiência. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência da bioinoculação do resíduo de vermiculita, associado ao esterco bovino, na liberação de nutrientes e no crescimento inicial do milho. Foi realizado delineamento inteiramente casualizado em casa de vegetação com sete tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - solo sem adubação; T2 - solo adubado com fontes solúveis de nutrientes (fertilização convencional); T3 - aplicação de resíduo de vermiculita (VR); T4 - VR enriquecido com esterco bovino (CM); T5 -VR+CM com Bacillus subtilis; T6 - VR + CM + B. amyloliquefaciens e T7 - VR + CM + B. subtilis + B. amyloliquefaciens). O VR aumentou a disponibilidade de Ca e K no solo, porém seu desempenho foi inferior às fontes solúveis. Independentemente da utilização de esterco bovino ou de microrganismos benéficos, os resíduos da mineração de vermiculita aumentaram a disponibilidade de Ca e K no solo, mas não foram capazes de igualar as fontes solúveis de nutrientes. Os resíduos de mineração associados ao esterco bovino e aos microrganismos benéficos (B. subtilis e B. amyloliquefaciens) aumentaram a atividade microbiana e aumentaram a liberação de cálcio disponível para o milho. ABSTRACT Vermiculite mining residues, although of low solubility, contain nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium at concentrations that allow their agricultural use. ABSTRACT Objective. To provide a comprehensive overview of geographical patterns (2001–2010) and time trends (1993–2012) of cancer incidence in children aged 0–19 years in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and interpret the findings in the context of global patterns. Methods. Geographical variations in 2001–2010 and incidence trends over 1993–2012 in the population of LAC younger than 20 years were described using the database of the third volume of the International Incidence of Childhood Cancer study containing comparable data. Age-specific incidence per million person-years (ASR) was calculated for population subgroups and age-standardized (WSR) using the world standard population. Results. Overall, 36 744 unique cases were included in this study. In 2001–2010 the overall WSR in age 0–14 years was 132.6. The most frequent were leukemia (WSR 48.7), central nervous system neoplasms (WSR 23.0), and lymphoma (WSR 16.6). The overall ASR in age group 15–19 years was 152.3 with lymphoma ranking first (ASR 30.2). Incidence was higher in males than in females, and higher in South America than in Central America and the Caribbean. Compared with global data LAC incidence was lower overall, except for leukemia and lymphoma at age 0–14 years and the other and unspecified tumors at any age. Overall incidence at age 0–19 years increased by 1.0% per year (95% CI [0.6, 1.3]) over 1993–2012. The included registries covered 16% of population aged 0–14 years and 10% of population aged 15–19 years. Conclusions. The observed patterns provide a baseline to assess the status and evolution of childhood cancer occurrence in the region. Extended and sustained support of cancer registration is required to improve representativeness and timeliness of data for childhood cancer control in LAC.

RESUMO Objetivo. Apresentar uma visão abrangente dos padrões geográficos (2001 a 2010) e das tendências temporais (1993 a 2012) da incidência de câncer em crianças e jovens de 0 a 19 anos na América Latina e no Caribe (ALC) e interpretar os resultados no contexto de padrões mundiais. Métodos. Foram descritas variações geográficas de 2001 a 2010 e tendências de incidência de 1993 a 2012 na população com menos de 20 anos da ALC usando informações comparáveis da base de dados do terceiro volume do estudo International Incidence of Childhood Cancer. Foram calculadas taxas de incidência específica por idade por milhão de pessoas-ano (ASR, na sigla em inglês) para subgrupos populacionais e taxas padronizadas por idade usando a população padrão mundial (WSR, na sigla em inglês). Resultados. No total, foram incluídos 36 744 casos únicos. No período de 2001 a 2010, a WSR para todos os tumores combinados na faixa etária de 0 a 14 anos foi de 132,6. Os diagnósticos mais frequentes foram leucemia (WSR de 48,7), neoplasias do sistema nervoso central (WSR de 23,0) e linfoma (WSR de 16,6). A ASR para todos os tumores combinados na faixa etária de 15 a 19 anos foi de 152,3, e a maior taxa foi a de linfoma (ASR de 30,2). A incidência foi maior no sexo masculino do que no sexo feminino e maior na América do Sul do que na América Central e no Caribe. De modo geral, em comparação com as estimativas mundiais, a incidência na ALC foi menor, exceto para leucemia e linfoma entre 0 e 14 anos e para outros tumores e tumores não especificados em qualquer idade. A taxa de incidência na faixa etária de 0 a 19 anos aumentou em 1,0% ao ano (IC de 95% [0,6, 1,3]) entre 1993 e 2012. Os registros incluídos cobriam 16% da população de 0 a 14 anos e 10% da população de 15 a 19 anos. Conclusões. Os padrões observados servem de referência para avaliar o status e a evolução da ocorrência de câncer infantil na região. É necessário garantir um apoio ampliado e consistente aos registros de câncer para aprimorar a representatividade e a disponibilidade das informações em tempo adequado para o controle do câncer infantil na ALC.

RESUMO: O Vale do Ribeira é uma das maiores regiões produtoras de banana do Brasil. Contudo, ainda são escassas informações sobre a fertilidade do solo e o estado nutricional das plantas que possam limitar a produção da fruta na região. Deste modo, o presente trabalho objetivou diagnosticar os parâmetros nutricionais mais limitantes para as cultivares de bananeira, Nanica e Prata, no Vale do Ribeira - SP, a partir de laudos de análises químicas de solo e folha. Os dados avaliados compreenderam amostragens realizadas em pomares comerciais, nos municípios de Eldorado, Cajati, Jacupiranga, Pariquera-açú, Registro e Sete Barras entre os anos 2012 e 2020. Os resultados das análises químicas de solo (pH, V, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn) e folha (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn) foram interpretados de acordo com valores disponíveis na literatura e calculados seus valores máximos, mínimos, médias, coeficientes de variação (CV) e intervalos de confiança (IC) a P < 0.05. As classes de interpretação dos parâmetros foram avaliadas de acordo com sua distribuição de frequência. Grande parte das amostras apresentaram valores de pH e V próximos aos indicados para a bananeira. As concentrações de nutrientes no solo, em média, foram consideradas altas, no entanto, para K, Mg e S, a concentração no solo não refletiu em adequada nutrição da bananeira, estando esses nutrientes deficientes na planta. ABSTRACT: Vale do Ribeira is one of the largest banana producing regions in Brazil. However, information on soil fertility and nutrient status that could limit fruit production remains scarce. Thus, the present study diagnosed the most limiting nutrient parameters for the Nanica and Prata banana cultivars, in Vale do Ribeira, São Paulo State, based on soil and leaf chemical analyses. The data assessed included samples from commercial plantations in the municipalities of Eldorado, Cajati, Jacupiranga, Pariquera-açú, Registro and Sete Barras, between 2012 and 2020. The results of soil (pH, V, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) and leaf chemical analyses (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) were interpreted according to literature values and their maximums, minimums, means, coefficients of variation (CV), and confidence intervals (CI) were calculated at P < 0.05. ABSTRACT In semi-arid regions, where seasonal drought or irregular rainfall distribution are common occurrences, agricultural management techniques or strategies, such as the use of bone meal and/or hydrogel, can mitigate adverse conditions and ensure crop production. This study aimed to evaluate the efects of bone meal doses (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 g pit−1), in association or not with hydrogel (0 and 5 g pit−1, respectively), on the leaf nutrient content of the dwarf cashew cultivar BRS 226. The leaf nutrient contents were evaluated during two growing seasons. For being a good source of macronutrients, the bone meal increased the levels of N, P, Ca, K and Mg in the dwarf cashew leaves. The leaf contents of the micronutrients Zn, Fe and Mn decreased with increasing bone meal doses. The nutrient accumulation in the leaves of the dwarf cashew planted in pits with bone meal and hydrogel has the following order: N > K > Ca > Mg > P > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu. RESUMO Em regiões semiáridas, onde a seca sazonal ou a distribuição irregular de chuvas são ocorrências comuns, técnicas ou estratégias de manejo agrícola, como o uso de farinha de osso e/ou hidrogel, podem mitigar condições adversas e garantir a produção agrícola. Objetivou- se avaliar os efeitos de doses de farinha de osso (0, 250, 500, 750 e 1,000 g cova−1), em associação ou não com hidrogel (0 e 5 g cova−1, respectivamente), sobre o teor de nutrientes foliares da cultivar de cajueiro-anão BRS 226. Os teores de nutrientes nas folhas foram avaliados durante duas safras. Por ser boa fonte de macronutrientes, a farinha de osso aumentou os níveis de N, P, Ca, K e Mg nas folhas do cajueiro anão. Os teores foliares dos micronutrientes Zn, Fe e Mn diminuíram com o aumento das doses de farinha de osso. Abstract In precision agriculture, one of the major problems is the need for a dense sampling grid. A solution to this problem has been the generation of management zones and the correlation between them. This work aims at defining management zones for a papaya culture using the fuzzy C-means grouping method, based on the following soil attributes: phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and potassium; and base saturation. The work was conducted in an approximately 1.2 ha area planted with a commercial culture of Carica papaya L. cultivated in typical Argisol found on the coastal terraces, in the municipality of São Mateus, ES, Brazil. The management zones were defined by the proposed method, based on the following analyses: soil chemical parameters P, Ca, Mg, and base saturation (V), analyzed together; soil chemical parameters P, Ca, Mg, and V, analyzed separately; and, the following combinations of soil chemical attributes Ca-Mg, Ca-V, Ca-Mg-V, P-Ca, P-Mg, P-V, P-Ca-Mg, P-Ca-V, Mg-V, and P-Ca-Mg-V. Resumo Na agricultura de precisão, um dos maiores problemas é a necessidade de uma grade amostral densa. Uma solução para este impasse tem sido a geração de zonas de gestão e a correlação entre elas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo definir zonas de manejo para a cultura do mamoeiro utilizando o método de agrupamento fuzzy C-means, baseado nos seguintes atributos do solo: fósforo, cálcio, magnésio e potássio; e saturação de bases. Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the acidity levels to obtain adequate soil chemical attributes for the maximum fruit yield of blackberry trees grown in acidic soils subjected to increasing limestone rates. The BRS Tupy, Brazos, Guarani, and BRS Xavante blackberry cultivars were evaluated on the Typic Hapludox (LVdf) and Rhodic Hapludox (LVd) soils, to which four rates of dolomitic limestone were applied (0, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 Mg ha-1). The effect of liming on soil chemical attributes, in a 2×4 factorial arrangement (soils and limestone rates), as well as leaf nutrient content and fruit yield, in a 2×4×4 factorial arrangement (soils, limestone rates, and cultivars), were evaluated. The maximum fruit yield was obtained with 3.3 Mg ha-1 dolomitic limestone. The blackberry cultivars showed a high demand for Ca, Mg, and base saturation and a low tolerance to aluminum in the soils. From 3.3 Mg ha-1 dolomitic limestone, the maximum fruit yield of blackberry trees grown in acidic soils is obtained with pH 5.6, maximum tolerated aluminum saturation of 6%, Ca and Mg concentration of 45.3 mmolc kg-1, and base saturation of 48.3%. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os níveis de acidez para obter os atributos químicos do solo adequados à máxima produção de frutos de amoreiras-pretas cultivadas em solos ácidos submetidos a doses crescentes de calcário. Foram avaliadas as cultivares de amoreira-preta BRS Tupy, Brazos, Guarani e BRS Xavante nos solos Latossolo Vermelho Distroférico (LVdf) e Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (LVd), aos quais foram aplicadas quatro doses de calcário dolomítico (0, 1,5, 3,0 e 6,0 Mg ha-1). Foram avaliados o efeito da calagem sobre os atributos químicos do solo, em arranjo fatorial 2×4 (solos e doses de calcário), bem como o teor de nutrientes foliares e a produção de frutos, em arranjo fatorial 2×4×4 (solos, doses de calcário e cultivares). A produção máxima de frutos foi obtida com 3,3 Mg ha-1 de calcário dolomítico. As cultivares de amoreira-preta apresentaram alta demanda por Ca, Mg e saturação por bases e baixa tolerância ao alumínio nos solos. ABSTRACT Mining in the municipality of Capitão Poço, Pará, has resulted in soil degradation as the main consequence. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the stocks of the elements (N, P, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mn) in roots in areas of post-pebble mining recovery in Pará, Brazil. The study was carried out in four areas, namely the area under recovery with soil bioengineering techniques (complementary construction technique and soil stabilization technique), the area under recovery with a natural regeneration process, the degraded area, and the native forest located in the municipality of Capitão Poço-PA. Roots were collected at 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-80, and 80-100 cm soil layers, quantified the dry biomass and contents of macro and micronutrients, and then, estimated the stocks of elements in roots. The data of the element stocks in roots were subjected to the Shapiro-Wilk normality tests and analysis of variance. Means were compared using the Tukey test at 5% significance using the SISVAR statistical software. The highest average Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ values in fine roots were in areas with bioengineering and native forest. The native forest presented the highest average values of macro and micronutrients in fine and thick roots. Furthermore, the lowest stocks of elements in roots were in the degraded area. However, bioengineering techniques are effective in recovering degraded soils, as vegetation cover reestablishes the balance of the soil-plant system. RESUMO A mineração no município de Capitão Poço, Pará tem acarretado, como principal consequência, a degradação do solo. Desta forma, o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os estoques dos elementos N, P, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe, Zn, Cu e Mn em raízes sob áreas em recuperação por mineração de seixos no Pará, Brasil. O estudo foi desenvolvido em quatro áreas, sendo elas a área em recuperação com técnicas de bioengenharia de solos (técnica de construção complementares e técnica de estabilização de solo), a área em recuperação com processo de regeneração natural, a área degradada e a floresta nativa, localizadas no município de Capitão Poço. Para análise dos estoques de elementos em raízes, foram coletados raízes nas profundidades 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-80 e 80-100 cm, depois quantificada a biomassa seca e macros e micronutrientes. Para obtenção dos resultados, os estoques de elementos em raízes foram submetidos aos testes de normalidade Shapiro e Wilk e às análises de variância. A comparação das médias foi realizada pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de significância e utilizado o software estatístico SISVAR. Os maiores valores médios de Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ em raízes finas foram nas áreas com bioengenharia e floresta nativa. Ademais, a floresta nativa apresentou os maiores valores médios de macro e micronutrientes em raízes finas e grossas. Outrossim, os menores estoques de elementos em raízes foram na area degradada. Contudo, as técnicas de bioengenharia são eficazes para recuperar solos degradados, dado que, a cobertura vegetal reestabelece o equilíbrio do sistema solo-planta. Abstract This article provides a critical review of the diagnostic value of several echocardiographic findings in cardiac amyloidosis (CA). The importance of early and accurate detection of CA is emphasized, considering its challenging diagnosis and the need for a high index of suspicion by clinicians. Echocardiography is often the first choice for imaging assessment of cardiac structure and function when CA is suspected. The article encompasses several conventional echocardiographic features and speckle-tracking echocardiography-derived deformation parameters. Some of these indexes are grouped together to form scores, which can improve the accuracy of diagnosing CA. Abstract Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting is still a common complication. Serotonin receptor antagonists are commonly used in clinical practice for antiemetic prophylaxis. Interin-dividual variations in drug response, including single nucleotide polymorphisms, are related to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes in these drugs and may lead to a poor therapeutic response. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of CYP2D6 isoenzyme and ABCB1 gene polymorphisms on the frequency of postoperative nausea and vomiting with the use of ondansetron or palonosetron. Methods: A randomized, double-blind clinical trial including 82 women aged 60 years or over undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy was conducted. Patients were randomized to receive either ondansetron or palonosetron for postoperative nausea and vomiting prophylaxis. DNA was extracted from saliva. Genetic polymorphisms were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The following polymorphisms were analyzed: rs3892097 C/T, rs1128503 A/G, rs16947A/G, rs1065852 A/G, rs1045642 A/G, rs2032582 C/A, and rs20325821 C/A. Results: Overall, vomiting, and severe nausea occurred in 22.5% and 57.5% of patients, respectively. In the palonosetron group, patients with the GG genotype (rs16947 A/G) experienced more severe nausea (p = 0.043). In the ondansetron group, patients with the M genotype (rs16947 A/G) presented mild nausea (p = 0.034), and those with the AA genotype (rs1065852 A/G) experienced more vomiting (p = 0.034). Conclusion: A low antiemetic response was observed with ondansetron in the presence of the AA genotype (rs16947 A/G) and the AA genotype (rs1065852 A/G), and a low therapeutic response was found with palonosetron in the presence of the GG genotype (rs16947 A/G) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Abstract The larynx is in the lower respiratory tract and has the function of protecting the airways, controlling, and modulating breathing, assisting the circulatory system, and vocalizing. This study aims to describe the anatomy and histology of the skeleton of the larynx and trachea of the species Chelonia mydas, Caiman yacare and Caiman latirostris. The study was conducted at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), using nine specimens of Ch. mydas, 20 of Ca. yacare and four of Ca. latirostris. Samples of the larynx and trachea were collected, fixed, and sent for dissection of the structures and subsequent macroscopic analysis. For histology, samples were processed by the routine paraffin embedding method and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Verhoeff. For the three species, two arytenoid cartilages, a cricoid cartilage, a hyoid apparatus composed of a base and two horns were found. In Ch. mydas, two structures called thyroid wings were observed, not found in crocodilians. The trachea of crocodilians presented incomplete tracheal rings and musculature, while the trachea of Ch. mydas presented complete tracheal rings. ABSTRACT This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis (MA) of systematic review data on poultry litter biochar (PLB) to answer the following questions: (i) What are the major studies regarding this worldwide? (ii) Which soil chemical attributes are the most affected? and (iii) Does PLB improve soil quality and crop productivity? MA revealed that the application of PLB significantly changed several key soil attributes, including pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and nitrogen, carbon, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and aluminum content. Specifically, MA showed that PLB decreased Al3+ in the soil by 71% while increasing pH, N, C, and CEC by 16, 20, 36, and 82%, respectively. This significant increase in CEC was associated with the addition of Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+ cations by 43, 202, and 636%, respectively. It was verified that PLB serves a dual function: it corrects soil acidity and pH while also enhancing the content of key nutrients, such as C and N. RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma meta-análise (MA) de dados de revisão sistemática sobre biochar de cama de aves (BCA) para responder: (i) Quais são os principais estudos no mundo? (ii) Quais atributos químicas do solo são mais afetadas? (iii) O PLB melhora a qualidade do solo e a produtividade das culturas? A MA revelou que o BCA mudou significativamente várias propriedades-chave do solo, incluindo pH, capacidade de troca catiônica (CTC), nitrogênio, carbono, potássio, cálcio, magnésio e teor de alumínio. Especificamente, a MA mostrou que o BCA diminuiu Al3+ no solo em 71%, enquanto aumentou o pH, N, C e CTC em 16, 20, 36 e 82%, respectivamente. Este aumento significativo na CTC foi associado à adição de cátions Ca2+, Mg2+ e K+ em 43, 202 e 636%, respectivamente. Foi verificado que o BCA tem uma função dupla: corrige a acidez e o pH do solo, enquanto também aumenta o teor de nutrientes-chave como C e N. Abstract Shear connectors are essential elements in composite structures of steel and concrete as they ensure the interaction between materials and the transfer of forces. In this research, seven models of shear connectors made from bent CA-50 steel bars were tested. The models varied in bar diameter, reinforcement ratio, and inclination relative to the metal profile’s flange. The results showed that the connector with a 12.5 mm diameter (model A1) exhibited the best performance in terms of strength and ductility. Connectors with a 10.0 mm diameter (models B1 and B2) also showed satisfactory results. The inclination of the connectors did not significantly influence the strength of the models. Resumo Conectores de cisalhamento são elementos essenciais nas estruturas mistas de aço e concreto, pois garantem a interação entre os materiais e a transferência de esforços. Nesta pesquisa, foram ensaiados 7 modelos de conectores de cisalhamento confeccionados com vergalhões de aço CA-50 dobrados. Os modelos variaram em bitola das barras, taxa de armadura e inclinação em relação à mesa do perfil metálico. Os resultados mostraram que o conector com bitola de 12,5 mm (modelo A1) obteve o melhor desempenho em termos de resistência e ductilidade. Os conectores com bitola de 10,0 mm (modelos B1 e B2) também apresentaram resultados satisfatórios. A inclinação dos conectores não apresentou influência significativa na resistência dos modelos. Abstract Betanin is a natural pigment belonging to the group of betalains with vasoconstrictive properties. This study investigated the underlying mechanism involved in the vasoconstrictive effect of betanin in rat aorta. Betanin enhanced the contractile response in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine. In aortic preparations under resting tonus, betanin induced potent and sustained contractions. The contractile effect of betanin was increased in endothelium-denuded aortic rings, while treatment of endothelium-intact preparations with the alpha-1-adrenergic receptor antagonist prazosin abolished the contractile effects of betanin. In the presence of verapamil, the contractile effects of betanin were decreased, and they were abolished under Ca 2+ -free solution. Vasoconstriction was not affected by treatment with yohimbine and guanethidine. Betanin partially restored the endothelium-dependent vasorelaxant effect induced by acetylcholine, a response that was blunted in aortic rings treated with baicalin, an inhibitor of the nitric oxide (NO) - cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) - protein kinase G (PKG) pathway.
