RESUMO: Infecção e inflamação excessivas são as complicações mais comuns associadas à castração. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a eficácia do flunixin meglumine (FM), meloxicam (MX) ou firocoxib (FX) no controle da inflamação após a castração em cavalos usando proteínas da fase aguda (APP) como marcadores de inflamação. Trinta equinos saudáveis (358,62±45,57kg; 4,99±2,63 anos) foram em função dos anti-inflamatórios utilizados após as castrações aleatoriamente (n= 10 animais/grupo) alocados em três diferentes grupos: Grupo 1 (FM 1,1mg/kg de peso, IV, sid por 5 dias); Grupo 2 (MX 0,6mg/kg de peso, IV, s.i.d por 5 dias); e Grupo 3 (FX 0,1mg/kg de peso, IV, s.i.d por 5 dias). Todos os cavalos foram castrados em posição quadrupedal, utilizando a técnica aberta. As concentrações de APP sérica e peritoneal foram separadas por eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida (PAGE) com dodecil-sulfato de sódio (SDS) e determinadas no momento 0 (antes da castração) e com 3, 5, 24, 48, 72, 120 e 168 horas após a castração. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo programa estatístico SAS e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Student-Newman-Keuls (p<0,05). Três animais do grupo MX desenvolveram hipertermia (com temperatura retal de 39,8, 39,3 e 38,9° C nos dias 4, 5 e 6, respectivamente) e mostraram sinais clínicos locais de inflamação (edema inguinal e escrotal excessivo) e relutância em andar, bem como marcha rígida dos membros posteriores. As mesmas complicações foram observadas em um cavalo do FX. Não foram observadas complicações entre os animais do FM. Independente do grupo, a castração resultou em alterações significativas nos valores séricos e peritoneais de proteínas totais, ceruloplasmina (Cp), transferrina (Tf), albumina (Alb), haptoglobina (Hp) e glicoproteína ácida α1 (Gp). No entanto, os animais dos grupos MX e FX apresentaram resposta de fase aguda mais intensa quando comparados aos animais do FM. Alterações na resposta de fase aguda deveram-se ao trauma cirúrgico da castração, mas as diferenças entre os grupos foram associadas à capacidade do anti-inflamatório em controlar a inflamação. Em conclusão, baseado da resposta de fase aguda, o flunixin em comparação com o meloxicam e o firocoxib é mais eficiente no controle da inflamação após a castração em equinos.

ABSTRACT: Excessive infection and inflammation are the most common complications associated with castration. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of flunixin meglumine (FM), meloxicam (MX), or firocoxib (FX) for inflammation control after castration in horses using acute-phase proteins (APP) as markers of inflammation. Thirty healthy, unbroken, mixed-breed horses (body weight 358.62±45.57kg and age 4.99±2.63 years) were randomly (n=10 animals/group) allocated to receive one of three different post-castration anti-inflammatory medicines: Group 1 (FM 1.1mg/kg bwt, IV, s.i.d for 5 days); Group 2 (MX 0.6mg/kg bwt, IV, s.i.d for 5 days); and Group 3 (FX 0.1mg/kg bwt, IV, s.i.d for 5 days). All horses were castrated in standing position, using the open technique. Serum and peritoneal APP concentrations were measured by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and determined before castration (0), and 3, 5, 24, 48, 72, 120 and 168 hours after castration. The results were submitted to analysis of variance using the SAS statistical program, and means were compared by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (p<0.05). Three animals from the MX group developed hyperthermia (with rectal temperatures of 39.8, 39.3 and 38.9°C on day 4, 5 and 6, respectively) and showed local clinical signs of inflammation (inguinal and excessive scrotal edema) and reluctance to walk, as well as a rigid gait of the hind limbs. The same complications were observed in one FX horse. No complications were observed among the FM animals. The castration resulted in significant changes in serum and peritoneal values of total proteins, ceruloplasmin (Cp), transferrin (Tf), albumin (Alb), haptoglobin (Hp) and α1-acid glycoprotein (Gp) in animals of all experimental groups. However, the animals of the MX and FX groups presented more intense acute phase response compared to the animals of the FM group. Changes in the APP were associated with the surgical trauma of castration, but the differences between groups were associated with the ability of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to control the inflammation. In conclusion, and based on the findings of acute phase proteins, flunixin is more efficient to control the magnitude of inflammation following castration as compared to meloxicam and firocoxib.

The present study analyzed the relationship between personality assessed from unstructured stimuli and creativity, as well as the existence of a documented personality profile of creative children. The sample consists of 146 children and adolescents from 9 to 12 years of age. Personality was studied through the abridged version of the Holtzman Inkblot Technique (HIT), Form A, whereas creativity was assessed by means of the Figural Test of Creative Thinking of Torrance, Form B. The correlation analysis showed a significant positive association between creativity and Form Definiteness, Form Appropriateness, Movement, Integration, and Barrier, as well as a significant negative relationship between creativity and Rejection. In terms of the profile, statistically significant differences were found in personality according to creativity. Specifically, creative children showed minor Rejection and greater values in the variables Form Definiteness, Form Appropriateness, Movement, Pathognomonic Verbalization, Integration, and Barrier. These results would suggest that creative children are marked by a more productive, efficient, original and including cognitive pattern, being generally not different from non-creative children in terms of affection.

El presente estudio examina la relación entre la personalidad, evaluada desde estímulos inestructurados y la creatividad, así como la existencia de un perfil de personalidad característico en niños creativos. La muestra quedó constituida por 146 niños y adolescentes de 9 a 12 años. La personalidad se estudió por medio de la versión abreviada de la técnica de Manchas de Tinta de Holtzman (HIT), Forma A, y la creatividad a través de la prueba de figuras del Test de Pensamiento Creativo de Torrance (TTCT), Forma B. El análisis de correlación mostró una asociación positiva y significativa entre la creatividad y Forma Definida, Forma Apropiada, Movimiento, Integración y Barrera, así como una asociación negativa y significativa entre creatividad y Rechazo. En relación con el perfil, se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la personalidad según la creatividad. Específicamente, los niños creativos presentaron menor Rechazo y valores más elevados en las variables Forma Definida, Forma Apropiada, Movimiento, Verbalización Patognomónica, Integración y Barrera. Estos resultados indicarían que lo que caracteriza a los niños creativos es un patrón cognitivo más productivo, eficiente, original e integrador, no diferenciándose en general de los no creativos en el aspecto afectivo.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la percepción de la creatividad en niños, padres y pares, y el efecto de estas percepciones sobre la producción creativa de los niños en actividades de papel y lápiz. Método. Participaron 359 alumnos de 9 a 13 años de diferentes escuelas y colegios de la provincia de Entre Ríos de la República Argentina. Para conocer la producción creativa, los niños completaron la prueba de figuras del Test de Pensamiento Creativo de Torrance Forma B. Para estudiar la valoración de los pares, padres y niños sobre la creatividad se aplicó el Sociograma "Compañero creativo", la Escala de Personalidad Creadora (versión heteroevaluación a los padres o tutores) y la versión autoevaluación a los niños de 11 a 13 años. Resultados. Los resultados mostraron que tanto la percepción parental (F (2, 356) = 6.55, p = 0.002), así como la evaluación que realizan los pares (F (2, 356) = 4.90, p = 0.008) sobre la creatividad mejoran la producción creativa del niño en las tareas de papel y lápiz. No se encontraron diferencias significativas en la producción creativa según la evaluación del niño sobre su propia creatividad. Conclusión. Los datos muestran la importancia cardinal de los factores contextuales, particularmente, la percepción de los padres y de los pares en los procesos de formación del yo en cuanto a las competencias y habilidades que son necesarias para realizar una actividad creadora.

Objective. The present study aimed at assessing the perception of creativity in children, parents and peers, as well as the effect of these perceptions on the child's creative output in paper-and-pencil activities. Method. The study involved 359 students aged 9-13 years from different schools and colleges of the province of Entre Ríos, Argentina. To know the creative production, children completed the Figural Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT; Torrance, Ball y Safter, 1992), Form B. To study the valuation of peers, parents and the own child on creativity, the Sociogram "Creative peer" for all children, the Creative Personality Scale (CPS; 2004, in its hetero-evaluation version for parents or guardians) and the Self-evaluation version for children aged 1113 years were administered. Results. The results showed that both parental perception (F (2, 356) = 6.55, p = 0.002) and peers' evaluation (F (2, 356) = 4.90, p = 0.008) on creativity improve the child's creative production in paper-and-pencil activities. No significant differences were found in the creative production according to the child's self-perception of his/her creativity. Conclusion. Data demonstrate the fundamental importance of contextual factors, mainly the perception of parents and peers in the process of the formation of the self, in terms of competencies and skills that are necessary to carry out a creative task.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a percepção da criatividade em crianças, pais e pares, e o efeito de estas percepções sobre a produção criativa das crianças em atividade de papel e lápis. Metodologia. Participaram 359 alunos de 9 a 13 anos de idade de diferentes escolas e colégios da província de Entre Ríos da República Argentina. Para conhecer a produção criativa, as crianças completaram a prova de figuras do Test de Pensamento Criativo de Torrence Forma B. Para estudar a valoração dos pares, pais e crianças sobre criatividade foi aplicado o Sociograma "Companheiro criativo", a Escala de Personalidade Criadora (versão heteroavaliação aos pais ou tutores) e a versão auto-avaliação às crianças de 11 a 13 anos de idade. Resultados. Os resultados mostraram que tanto a percepção parental (F(2,356) = 6.55, p = 0.002), assim como a avalição que foi feita pelos pares (F(2,356) = 4.90, p= 0.008) sobre a criatividade melhoram a produção criativa da criança em tarefas de papel e lápis. Não foram achadas diferenças significativas na produção criativa segundo a avalição da criança sobre sua própria criatividade. Conclusão. Os dados mostram a importância cardinal dos fatores contextuais, particularmente, a percepção dos pais e dos pares nos processos de formação do Eu em quanto às competências e habilidades que são necessárias para fazer uma atividade criadora.

Echinaster (Othilia) guyanensis Clark, 1987 is an endangered starfish distributed throughout the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean. Even though it has been extensively harvested, little is known about the biology and ecology of this starfish. Here, we examine reproduction seasonality in E. (O.) guyanensis. Individuals were collected monthly for one year, including four complete lunar phases. The gonad index (GI) was calculated to determine annual and monthly reproductive peaks. Gametogenesis stages were also determined. Sex ratio was 1:1.33 (M:F). Gonadosomatic index, body weight, central disc width and arm length were similar for both sexes. Gonads were present in all animals with arm length greater than 36.2 mm. Lunar phase was not associated with E. (O.) guyanensis reproduction. GI and gametogenesis patterns suggest that starfish have an annual reproductive peak with spawning during autumn months (March to May).

Echinometra lucunter Linnaeus, 1758 is a tropical sea urchin with strong bioerosive potential. Consequently, this species has great ecological importance. The species occurs in high densities along the Brazilian coast, particularly in the south and southeast. The objective of this work was to evaluate both the effects of annual seasonality and the lunar cycle on the reproduction of E. lucunter. Individuals were sampled monthly for a period of one year and during four complete lunar cycles. The gonadosomatic index (GI) was calculated to determine the annual and monthly reproductive peaks based on the lunar phase. The sex ratio (male:female) was 1:1.04, without significant difference in sexual proportion. The GI was significantly higher for males than for females. The first sexual maturation occurs when carapace width reaches 23.30 mm, and 50% of the animals have gonads with 28.22 mm. The spawning peak generally occurs during the whole year from the full moon to the waning moon. However, there is an annual reproductive peak from summer to autumn.

OBJETIVO: A neoproliferação intimal e o remodelamento têm sido implicados como os maiores fatores causadores de reestenose. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a ação da L-arginina por via oral, nesses dois fatores, após lesão por balão, em artérias ilíacas de coelhos hipercolesterolêmicos. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados dezenove coelhos, que foram divididos em dois grupos: controle (GC) e arginina (GA), respectivamente com dezenove e dezessete artérias estudadas. Os animais foram submetidos a lesão por balão de angioplastia, em suas artérias ilíacas, quinze dias após início de dieta hipercolesterolêmica a 2%. A seguir, os animais do GA passaram a receber uma solução de L-arginina, por via oral, na dose de 1 g/kg/dia. Após o sacrifício, no 15º dia após a lesão por balão, procedeu-se a cortes histológicos das artérias, as quais foram coradas e fixadas. Utilizou-se como representativa do desenvolvimento da lesão a razão da área da neoíntima (em mm²) pela camada média (em mm²). Por sua vez, a razão da área total do vaso em sua porção medial (de maior contato com o balão) pela área total do vaso no segmento referencial (de menor contato com o balão) foi a definidora do remodelamento. RESULTADOS: A média do espessamento neointimal (NI/M) foi de 0,8151±0,2201 no GC e de 0,3296±0,1133 no GA. Não houve diferença entre os tipos de remodelamento entre os dois grupos estudados. CONCLUSÃO: No modelo experimental utilizado, a L-arginina foi capaz de reduzir o espessamento intimal em coelhos hipercolesterolêmicos e não teve ação sobre o remodelamento arterial.

OBJECTIVE: It has been implied that neointimal proliferation and remodeling are the major causes of restenosis. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of orally administered L-arginine on these two factors in hypercholesterolemic rabbits that had suffered an injury to their iliac arteries caused by a catheter balloon. METHODS: The study included nineteen rabbits that were divided in two groups: control (CG) and arginine (AG). There were 19 arteries studied from the control group and 17 in the arginine group. The animals were placed on a 2% hypercholesterolemic diet for 15 days and then submitted to a balloon angioplasty in order to produce a lesion in their iliac arteries. Next, the AG animals were given a 1g/kg/day oral dose of a L-arginine solution. The animals were sacrificed 15 days after the angioplasty procedure and histological artery sections were prepared, stained and fixed. The ratio between the neointimal area (in mm²) and the media layer (in mm²) was used to represent lesion development. In order to determine remodeling, the ratio between the total area of the medial portion of the vessel (greater balloon contact) and the total area of the reference segment of the vessel (less balloon contact) was used. RESULTS: Mean neointimal thickness (NI/M) was 0.8151±0.2201 in CG and 0.3296±0.1133 in AG. Remodeling patterns for the two groups studied were similar. CONCLUSION: In the experimental model used, L-arginine was able to reduce intimal tissue thickness in hypercholesterolemic rabbits but did not act on artery remodeling.
