Resumo Este artigo é resultado de uma pesquisa de pós-doutorado realizada com mulheres negras profissionais de saúde que atuaram nas linhas de frente da pandemia de covid-19 em Pernambuco, Brasil. Com o objetivo de compreender as experiências das profissionais a partir de suas trajetórias familiares, profissionais e de cuidado de si e dos outros, tendo como fio condutor o racismo, foram entrevistadas 14 mulheres de diversas formações em saúde. Foi utilizada a técnica de rede de afetos, em que elas indicavam outras mulheres que estivessem em seu ciclo de trabalho e/ou amizades. As entrevistas foram realizadas em formato online ou nos locais de trabalho das participantes. As análises foram embasadas nos conceitos de dispositivo de racialidade e racismo genderizado, revelando aspectos relacionados à precarização do trabalho, à exaustão e à solidão, ao apagamento de suas contribuições e à continuidade colonial nas relações institucionais e interpessoais no campo da saúde, que, de forma simbólica e material, atribui às mulheres negras funções vinculadas à servidão, elevada à potência máxima no contexto de crise sanitária mundial. O artigo traz uma contribuição para o campo de estudo sobre a saúde da população negra, ao mostrar a necessidade de autocuidado e cuidado institucional para com essas trabalhadoras, focados nas micropolíticas cotidianas de enfretamento ao racismo.

Abstract This study stems from postdoctoral research with Black female healthcare providers who worked on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Pernambuco/Brazil. It sought to understand their experiences based on their family and professional trajectories and in the care of themselves and others, having racism as a common thread. In total, 14 women from different health backgrounds were interviewed. The technique of network of affections was used, in which these women indicated other women in their work cycle and/or friendships. The interviews were conducted online or in the workplaces. Analyses were based on the concepts of “device of raciality” and “gendered racism,” showing aspects related to the precariousness of work, exhaustion, loneliness, the erasure of these women’s, contributions and the colonial continuity in institutional and interpersonal relations in health, which symbolically and materially attributes to Black women functions linked to servitude, which were raised to maximum power in the context of a global health crisis. This study brings a contribution to the field of study on the health of the Black population by showing the need for self-care and institutional care for these workers, focused on the daily micropolitics of confronting racism.

Resumo Fundamento A Insuficiência Cardíaca é um importante problema de saúde pública, que leva à alta carga de sintomas físicos e psicológicos, apesar da terapia otimizada. Objetivo Avaliar primariamente o impacto de um Programa de Redução de Estresse, Meditação e Atenção plena na redução do estresse de pacientes com Insuficiência Cardíaca. Métodos Ensaio clínico randomizado e controlado que avaliou o impacto de um programa de redução de estresse comparado ao atendimento multidisciplinar convencional, em dois centros especializados no Brasil. O período de coleta de dados ocorreu entre abril e outubro de 2019. Um total de 38 pacientes foram alocados nos grupos de intervenção ou controle. A intervenção aconteceu ao longo de 8 semanas. O protocolo consistiu na avaliação das escalas de estresse percebido, depressão, qualidade de vida, ansiedade, atenção plena, qualidade do sono, teste de 6 minutos de caminhada e biomarcadores por um grupo cego, considerando um p-valor <0,05 como estatisticamente significativo. Resultados A intervenção resultou em redução significativa no estresse percebido de 22,8 ± 4,3 para 14,3 ± 3,8 pontos na escala de estresse percebido no grupo de intervenção vs. 23,9 ± 4,3 para 25,8 ± 5,4 no grupo controle (p-valor<0,001). Foi observada melhora significativa na qualidade de vida (p-valor=0,013), atenção plena (p-valor=0,041), qualidade do sono (p-valor<0,001) e no teste de 6 minutos de caminhada (p-valor=0,004) no grupo sob intervenção comparado com o controle. Abstract Background Heart Failure is a significant public health problem leading to a high burden of physical and psychological symptoms despite optimized therapy. Objective To evaluate primarily the impact of a Stress Reduction, Meditation, and Mindfulness Program on stress reduction of patients with Heart Failure. Methods A randomized and controlled clinical trial assessed the effect of a stress reduction program compared to conventional multidisciplinary care in two specialized centers in Brazil. The data collection period took place between April and October 2019. Thirty-eight patients were included and allocated to the intervention or control groups. The intervention took place over 8 weeks. The protocol assessed the scales of perceived stress, depression, quality of life, anxiety, mindfulness, quality of sleep, a 6-minute walk test, and biomarkers analyzed by a blinded team, considering a p-value <0.05 statistically significant. Results The intervention resulted in a significant reduction in perceived stress from 22.8 ± 4.3 to 14.3 ± 3.8 points in the perceived stress scale-14 items in the intervention group vs. 23.9 ± 4.3 to 25.8 ± 5.4 in the control group (p-value<0.001). A significant improvement in quality of life (p-value=0.013), mindfulness (p-value=0.041), quality of sleep (p-value<0.001), and the 6-minute walk test (p-value=0.004) was also observed in the group under intervention in comparison with the control. Abstract Aim: The influence of sleep on the adaptability and relearning rate during learning of complex motor skills is still unknown, limiting the comprehension of the sleep role in motor memory consolidation. Thus, we aimed to investigate the nocturnal sleep influence on retention, adaptability, and relearning rate of the dart-throwing task. Methods: Sixty healthy adults were divided into two groups: SLEEP and WAKE. Both groups practiced an under-arm dart-throwing task. However, WAKE practiced in the morning and performed a retention phase in the evening, and SLEEP practiced in the evening and performed a retention phase in the morning of the next day. The practice and retention phases were separated by 12 h in both groups. There were analyses regarding retention (retention test), adaptability (delayed transfer test), and relearning rate (savings). Results: Both groups improved their performance across the acquisition phase and maintained it in the retention test. The groups did not demonstrate adaptability and did not demonstrate a significant difference in relearning rate. Conclusion: We conclude that nocturnal sleep did not modulate the consolidation of motor memories related to ballistic discrete motor skills.

Resumo Espécies invasoras têm ocasionado a perda de biodiversidade no mundo todo por ocuparem o lugar de nativas. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a regeneração natural ao longo do tempo em um fragmento florestal invadido por Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton e Ligustrum sinense Lour. no sul do Brasil, a fim de quantificar essa invasão. Para isso, foram alocadas cinco transecções em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Lages (SC), sendo cada transecção dividida em parcelas com diferentes setores de distâncias da borda e em subparcelas para avaliação do componente regenerativo. Em 2012, os regenerantes de espécies arbóreas que se encontravam nas subparcelas foram identificados, plaqueteados e divididos nas seguintes classes: classe 1 _ plantas com altura entre 10 cm e 1 m; classe 2 _ plantas com altura entre 1 e 3 m; classe 3 _ plantas com altura maior que 3 m e diâmetro medido à altura do peito (DAP) menor que 5 cm. Em 2014, esses indivíduos foram reavaliados, contabilizando os indivíduos mortos e recrutas e enquadrando os sobreviventes e recrutas nas atuais classes. Foram calculadas as taxas de mortalidade, recrutamento, mudanças de classe e mudança líquida. Os dados foram analisados por meio de uma análise de componentes principais (ACP) e tabela de contingência. Conclui-se que as espécies superaram a fase inicial do processo de invasão, demonstrando elevado incremento populacional na área estudada. Ainda, ficou evidenciado o particionamento espacial entre as espécies nativas e as exóticas, o que sugere a existência de competição interespecífica, cuja consequência pode ser a extinção local de representantes do grupo autóctone.

Abstract The replacement of native species by invasive species has caused a worldwide loss of biodiversity. This study aimed to evaluate the natural regeneration over time in a forest fragment invaded by Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton and Ligustrum sinense Lour. in southern Brazil, in order to quantify this invasion. To do so, five transects were allocated in a fragment of Araucaria Forest in Lages, Santa Catarina state, with each transect divided into plots in different categories of distance from the edge and into sub-plots for the evaluation of the regenerative component. In 2012, the regenerating tree species identified in the sub-plots were tagged and classified according to height classes: Class 1, plants with height between 10 cm and 1 m; class 2, plants with height between 1 and 3 m; and Class 3, plants with a height greater than 3 m and DBH (diameter measured at breast height) less than 5 cm. In 2014, these individuals were re-evaluated, counting the dead and recruited individuals and classifying the survivors and recruits into the existing height classes. Rates of mortality, recruitment, net change, and height class changes were calculated. The data were analyzed by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and contingency table. It was concluded that the species overcame the early stage of the invasion process, demonstrating great population growth in the study area. Also, a spatial partitioning between native and exotic species was observed, suggesting the existence of interspecific competition, the result of which may be the local extinction of species from the autochthonous group.

We evaluated the use of a newly described sodC-based real-time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for detecting Neisseria meningitidis in normally sterile sites, such as cerebrospinal fluid and serum. The sodC-based RT-PCR assay has an advantage over ctrA for detecting nongroupable N. meningitidis isolates, which are commonly present in asymptomatic pharyngeal carriage. However, in our study, sodC-based RT-PCR was 7.5% less sensitive than ctrA. Given the public health impact of possible false-negative results due to the use of the sodC target gene alone, sodC-based RT-PCR for the diagnosis of meningococcal meningitis should be used with caution.

Como objetivo de avaliar a capacidade antioxidante de 15 hortaliças comercializadas na Cidade do Recife, extratos metanólicos foram testados quanto a atividade antioxidante em sistema modelo beta-caroteno/ácido linoléico e a habilidade de seqüestrar o radical estável 1,1-difenil-2-picrilhidrazil (DPPH). Todas as hortaliças investigadas exibiram propriedade antioxidante, entretanto a ação foi diferenciada entre os vegetais. Os extratos metanólicos da couve folha, tomate, batata, couve-flor, repolho verde, espinafre e alface crespa, com percentual de inibição superior a 70%, foram os mais eficazes em seqüestrar o radical livre. Os extratos metanólicos da alface lisa, cebola branca e vagem apresentaram ação moderada (60-70% de inibição), enquanto que a cebola roxa, chuchu, pepino e cenoura exibiram a mais fraca capacidade de seqüestrar o radical DPPH. No sistema modelo beta-caroteno/ácido linoléico, os extratos metanólicos do espinafre e couve-folha exibiram a mais elevada atividade antioxidante (superior a 70%). Ação antioxidante moderada (60-70%) foi exibida pelos extratos da alface lisa, cebola branca e couve-flor, enquanto que os do chuchu, cenoura, pepino, tomate e vagem, com atividade inferior a 60%, foram considerados com fraca ação antioxidante. As hortaliças testadas podem ser vistas como fontes dietéticas de antioxidantes que podem trazer benefícios à saúde, portanto o seu consumo deve ser estimulado.

This study was carried out to determine the antioxidant capacity of 15 vegetables commonly consumed in Recife - PE, Brazil. Methanol extracts were screened for their antioxidant activity using two tests: DPPH free radical scavenging and beta-carotene/linoléico acid assay. All vegetables showed antioxidant properties however the action was differentiated among the kinds of vegetables. The methanol extracts of collard greens, tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflowers, green cabbage, spinach and lettuce "crespa" had the highest percentage in terms of free radical scavenging activities (> 70%). A moderate activity (60-70%) was shown by lettuce "lisa", white onion and green beans while purple onion, chayote, cucumber and carrot had the lowest free radical scavenging activities. In the beta-carotene/linoleic acid assay, spinach and collard greens extracts showed strong antioxidant activity (> 70%). The lettuce "lisa", white onion and cauliflower had a moderate action (60-70%) while the chayote, carrot, cucumber, tomato and green bean showed weak antioxidant activity. The results indicate that vegetables which were evaluated may provide a source of dietary antioxidant therefore their consumption must be encouraged.

A febre por mordida de rato resulta de uma infecção causada pelo Spirillum minus. Os autores descrevem um caso de paciente com febre, astenia e úlcera na região frontal esquerda, após exposição a um roedor. O microorganismo foi identificado através de exame em campo escuro de material obtido do exsudado da úlcera. A penicilinafoi utilizada, com total regressão dos sintomas.

Rat-bitefever results from an infection with the organism Spirillum minus. The authors report a symptomatic patient with fever, malaise, and ulcer in forehead after a rodent exposure. The organism was identified in darkfield examination of the ulcerexsudate. Penicilin was the drug used with clinical improvement of symptoms.
