RESUMO Objetivos. Avaliar a tendência da mortalidade neonatal, pós-neonatal e infantil de 1996 a 2020, na região metropolitana do estado do Rio de Janeiro e nas outras regiões. Métodos. Estudo ecológico utilizando regiões como unidade de análise. Os dados foram acessados no Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade e Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos da Capital (Rio de Janeiro), dos territórios vizinhos (Niterói, São Gonçalo e Baixada Fluminense) e das outras regiões do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Utilizamos a modelagem multinível de Poisson, onde as variáveis de resposta dos modelos foram mortalidade infantil e seus componentes neonatal e pós-neonatal. Os efeitos fixos dos modelos ajustados foram região e ano da morte. Resultados. No período 1996-2020, a Baixada Fluminense apresentou a maior taxa de mortalidade infantil de seus componentes neonatal e pós-natal na região metropolitana. Todos os modelos ajustados mostraram que quanto mais recente o ano, menor o risco de mortalidade. O risco ajustado da mortalidade infantil e seus componentes neonatal e pós-neonatal foi menor em Niterói. Conclusão. A Baixada Fluminense apresentou o maior risco de mortalidade infantil e de seus componentes neonatal e pós-neonatal na região metropolitana. Detectamos estabilização das taxas de mortalidade nos últimos anos.

ABSTRACT Objectives. The study aims to assess the trend of neonatal, post-neonatal, and infant mortality from 1996 to 2020 within the metropolitan region of the state of Rio de Janeiro and other regions. Methods. Ecological study using the region as analysis unity. Data were accessed from the Mortality Information System and Live Birth Information System in the capital Rio de Janeiro, in the neighboring areas of Niterói, São Gonçalo, Baixada Fluminense, and the remaining regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro State. We applied Poisson multilevel modeling, where the models’ response variables were infant mortality and its neonatal and post neonatal components. Fixed effects of the adjusted models were region and death year variables. Results. During the 1996-2020 period, the Baixada Fluminense showed the highest infant mortality rate as to its neonatal and post neonatal components. All adjusted models showed that the more recent the year the lower the mortality risk. Niterói showed the lowest adjusted risk of infant mortality and its neonatal and post neonatal components. Conclusion. Baixada Fluminense showed the highest mortality risk for infant mortality and its neonatal and post-neonatal components in the metropolitan region. The stabilization in mortality rates in recent years was identified by the research.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the current situation of sexual aggression and assess the adhesion to ambulatory care follow-up. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study involving female children and adolescents aged 0–19 years, treated at the Center for Multiprofessional Care of Sexual Violence of the General Hospital of Nova Iguaçu, from 2014 to 2018. RESULTS: Of the 453 children and adolescents, 264 (58.3%) were <14 years of age and 189 (41.7%) were 14–19 years of age. In both groups, 78% were black. School delay of >2 years was found in 15.6% of children in the age group <14 years and 40.5% of adolescents in the age group 14–19 years [p<0.001; OR=3.7 (2.1–65)]. In girls aged £13 years, abuse usually occurred at home (73.2%), which was perpetrated by one aggressor (91%) and known to the victim (91.2%). In adolescents aged ≥14 years, 84.1% of rapes occurred outside the home, practiced by one aggressor (74.8%), 57.8% were unknown, and in 91.2% of cases, there was use of physical force and/or verbal threats. The victims aged <14 years have 14 times more chance of experiencing aggression within the family setting [p<0.001; OR=14.3 (8.2–25.6)] and 16 times more chance of experiencing aggression from known persons [p<0.001; OR=16.2 (9.2–29.8)]. On the contrary, adolescents aged ≥14 years have three times more chance of being abused by more than one aggressor [p<0.001; OR=3.3 (1.8–6.1)]. CONCLUSION: Black girls, especially those aged <14 years, are in a situation of greater vulnerability for sexual violence, have less adhesion to follow-up, and often experience aggression in the household setting.

Abstract Although variation between observers in the assessment of the Apgar score, it remains a useful indicator of the general conditions of the newborn. This is a cross-sectional study based on population of live births in Brazil in 1999 and biennium 2018-2019. All declarations of live births (DNV) obtained from the Live Births System database were accessed. Frequencies were compared between groups using Pearson’s chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. A statistical significance level of 0.05 was considered. We included 9.050.521 DNVs in our research. We found that 2,1% of newborns had 5th minute Apgar < 7 in 1999 compared with 0,9% in 2018-2019. Multivariate analysis shows that twins and teenage pregnancy are no longer risk factors. Among risk factors, we observed an increase in prematurity, low birth weight and congenital anomalies. An improvement in maternal markers was observed, especially increase in the number of prenatal consultations and schooling. Such findings demonstrate the importance access and adequate prenatal care and improved socioeconomic conditions as effective strategy to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Resumo Apesar da variação entre observadores na avaliação do escore de Apgar, ele permanece um indicador útil das condições gerais do recém-nascido. O presente trabalho é um estudo de corte transversal baseado na população de nascidos vivos no Brasil no ano de 1999 e no biênio 2018-2019. Foram avaliadas todas as declarações de nascidos vivos (DNV) obtidas a partir do banco de dados do Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos. As frequências foram comparadas entre os grupos por meio do teste qui-quadrado de Pearson e foi realizada análise de regressão logística multivariada. Adotou-se nível de significância estatística de 0,05. Foram analisadas 9.050.521 DNVs em nossa pesquisa. Constatamos que 2,1% dos recém-nascidos tiveram Apgar de 5º minuto < 7 em 1999, em comparação com 0,9% em 2018-2019. A análise multivariada indicou que gemelidade e gravidez na adolescência deixaram de ser fatores de risco para Apgar de 5º minuto < 7. Entre os fatores de risco, nota-se aumento da prematuridade, baixo peso ao nascer e anomalias congênitas. Observou-se melhoria de marcadores maternos, em especial o aumento do número de consultas pré-natais e escolaridade. Tais achados mostram a importância de acesso e seguimento pré-natal adequado e investimento em melhores condições socioeconômicas como estratégia eficaz para redução de morbimortalidade neonatal.

RESUMO: Relata-se um caso de meningoencefalite por Pythium insidiosum secundária a rinite em uma ovelha mestiça, três anos de idade, proveniente de um rebanho de 15 animais, criados extensivamente e com acesso livre a açude. O animal apresentava dispneia leve, cegueira, midríase, opistótono, nistagmo, incoordenação, diminuição do tônus mandibular e espasticidade dos membros pélvicos. O exame macroscópico da cavidade nasal evidenciou uma massa vermelho-escura, irregular, friável, que comprometia bilateralmente o septo nasal e a porção rostral dos cornetos nasais. No encéfalo, havia espessamento difuso das leptomeninges do cerebelo e porção ventral do tronco encefálico caracterizado por material granular amarelado associado à hiperemia dos vasos. No assoalho do quarto ventrículo, havia deposição de material amarelado, irregular, levemente granuloso, que se projetava em direção ao óbex e deslocava o cerebelo dorsolateralmente. Microscopicamente, havia rinite piogranulomatosa, eosinofílica, necrosante e meningoencefalite fibrinossupurativa, eosinofílica, necrosante, ambas associadas à trombose, vasculite e hifas intralesionais. Pela utilização da técnica de GMS as hifas foram impregnadas pela prata e apresentavam paredes finas e paralelas, raramente septadas e ramificadas. Na imuno-histoquímica, houve imunomarcação com o anticorpo policlonal anti-P. insidiosum em fragmentos do cerebelo e cavidade nasal. Os achados evidenciaram que rinite por P. insidiosum pode afetar secundariamente o sistema nervoso de ovinos, causando sinais clínicos neurológicos inespecíficos.

ABSTRACT: A case of meningoencephalitis caused by Pythium insidiosum secondary to rhinitis is reported in a three-year-old crossbred sheep from a herd of 15 animals, raised extensively and with free access to a weir. The animal presented mild dyspnea, blindness, mydriasis, opisthotonos, nystagmus, incoordination, decreased mandibular tone, and spasticity of the pelvic limbs. Macroscopic examination of the nasal cavity showed a blackish-red, irregular, friable mass that bilaterally compromised the nasal septum and the rostral portion of the nasal turbinates. In the brain, there was diffuse thickening of the leptomeninges of the cerebellum and ventral portion of the brainstem characterized by yellowish, granular material associated with vessel hyperemia. On the floor of the fourth ventricle, there was deposition of yellowish, irregular, slightly granular material that protruded towards the obex and displaced the cerebellum dorsolaterally. Microscopically, there were pyogranulomatous, eosinophilic, necrotizing rhinitis and fibrinosuppurative, eosinophilic, necrotizing meningoencephalitis, both associated with thrombosis, vasculitis, and intralesional hyphae. The hyphae were impregnated with silver and presented thin, parallel walls, rarely septate and branched. At immunohistochemistry, the hyphae were immunostained with polyclonal anti-P. insidiosum antibody in fragments of the cerebellum and nasal cavity. The findings showed that P. insidiosum rhinitis can secondarily affect the nervous system of sheep, causing nonspecific neurological clinical signs.

RESUMO Objetivo: Inquérito nacional de cobertura vacinal aos 12 e 24 meses de idade foi realizado para investigar as quedas nas coberturas a partir de 2016. Métodos: Amostra de 37.836 nascidos vivos das coortes de 2017 e 2018 residentes nas capitais, Distrito Federal (DF) e 12 cidades com mais de 100 mil habitantes, acompanhados nos primeiros 24 meses por registros nas cadernetas de vacinação. Setores censitários foram estratificados segundo condições socioeconômicas, e o mesmo número de crianças foi incluído para cada estrato. Calcularem-se coberturas vacinais de cada vacina e coberturas completas aos 12 e 24 meses, doses aplicadas, válidas e oportunas. Fatores familiares, maternos e da criança associados à cobertura foram pesquisados. Os motivos para não vacinar analisados foram: contraindicações médicas, dificuldades de acesso, problemas no funcionamento do programa e hesitação vacinal. Resultados: Os resultados preliminares mostram que menos de 1% das crianças não foram vacinadas, as coberturas pelo esquema completo são menores que 75% em todas as capitais e no DF, as vacinas com mais de uma dose perdem cobertura progressivamente, há diferenças entre os estratos socioeconômicos, favoráveis aos estratos mais altos em algumas cidades e aos estratos mais baixos em outras. Conclusão: Houve realmente redução da cobertura vacinal em todas as capitais e no DF para as crianças nascidas em 2017 e 2018, denotando piora na execução do Programa Nacional de Imunizações durante os anos de 2017 a 2019. O inquérito realizado não mensurou os impactos da pandemia de COVID-19 que podem ter reduzido ainda mais as coberturas vacinais.

ABSTRACT Objective: The national vaccination coverage survey on full vaccination at 12 and 24 months of age was carried out to investigate drops in coverage as of 2016. Methods: A sample of 37,836 live births from the 2017 or 2018 cohorts living in capital cities, the Federal District, and 12 inner cities with 100 thousand inhabitants were followed for the first 24 months through vaccine record cards. Census tracts stratified according to socioeconomic levels had the same number of children included in each stratum. Coverage for each vaccine, full vaccination at 12 and 24 months and number of doses administered, valid and timely, were calculated. Family, maternal and child factors associated with coverage were surveyed. The reasons for not vaccinating analyzed were: medical contraindications, access difficulties, problems with the program, and vaccine hesitancy. Results: Preliminary results showed that less than 1% of children were not vaccinated, full coverage was less than 75% at all capitals and the Federal District, vaccines requiring more than one dose progressively lost coverage, and there were inequalities among socioeconomic strata, favorable to the highest level in some cities and to the lowest in others. Conclusion: There was an actual reduction in full vaccination in all capitals and the Federal District for children born in 2017 and 2018, showing a deteriorating implementation of the National Immunization Program from 2017 to 2019. The survey did not measure the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have further reduced vaccination coverage.

Repeated adolescent pregnancy in Brazil from 2015 to 2019

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the rate of repeated pregnancy in adolescence and its association with early marriage and education level. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted by searching the Live Births Data System. The study included all adolescents in the age group 10–19 years with live births from 2015 to 2019 (n=2,405,248), divided into three groups: G1: primiparas; G2: with 1 previous pregnancy; and G3: with two or more previous pregnancies. RESULTS: Total repeated pregnancies remained stable, along the years. In the age group 10–14 years, the decrease in the period was from 5.0 to 4.7%, whereas in the age group 15–19 years, it was from 27.8 to 27.3%. Being married or in a stable union increases by 96% the chance of repeated pregnancy in the age group 10–14 years (p<0.001; OR=1.96; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.85–2.09). In the age group 15–19 years, the chance of repeated pregnancy among the married or in stable union increased 40% (p<0.001; OR=1.40; 95%CI 1.39–1.41)). Girls aged 10–14 years with an education level of<8 years had a 64% higher chance of repeated pregnancy (p<0.001; OR=1.64; 95%CI 1.53–1.75), and among those aged 15–19 years, there was a 137% higher chance of repeated pregnancy (p<0.001; OR=2.37; 95%CI 2.35–2.38). CONCLUSION: Repeated pregnancy in adolescence in Brazil remains very high over the years. There is an association between low education level and early marriage with repeated pregnancies in adolescence.

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the repercussions of motherhood on patients deprived of their liberty. Methods: integrative review based on research in electronic databases: Medline (PubMed), LILACS, SciELO and Nursing Database (BDENF), using the following search strategy: (“Prisons” [Majr] AND “Pregnancy” [ Mesh]), as of 2016. Results: the research ended with 33 bibliographic references, being the highest level of evidence from cohort studies, which demonstrate the precariousness of health care offered to these pregnant women. Three main groups of results were identified: low quality prenatal care, negative maternal and neonatal health indicators in relation to the general population and the emotional issues involved in prison reality during the period of pregnancy and puerperium. Conclusions: prenatal care has flaws that influence, in some way, the maternal and neonatal health indicators. In addition, the precarious structure of prison system directly interferes with the emotional health of these women.

Resumo Objetivos: avaliar as repercussões da maternidade em pacientes privadas da liberdade. Métodos: revisão integrativa a partir de pesquisa nas bases de dados eletrônicas: Medline (PubMed), LILACS, SciELO e Base de Dados de Enfermagem (BDENF), sendo usada como estratégia de busca: (“Prisons”[Majr] AND “Pregnancy”[Mesh]), a partir de 2016. Resultados: a pesquisa finalizou com 33 referências bibliográficas, sendo o maior nível de evidência de estudos de coorte, que demonstram a precarização na assistência de saúde ofertada a essas gestantes. Foram identificados três grupos principais de resultados: pré-natal de baixa qualidade, indicadores de saúde maternos e neonatais negativos e as questões emocionais envolvidas na realidade carcerária durante o período de gestação e puerpério. Conclusões: a assistência pré-natal apresenta falhas que influenciam nos indicadores de saúde maternos e neonatais. Além disso, a estrutura precária do sistema prisional interfere diretamente na saúde emocional dessas mulheres

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the rate of Mother-to-child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV to neonates in a reference university hospital in Sao Luis city, the capital of Maranhao State (MA), evaluating MTCT-associated factors. A retrospective cohort study based on data from the Notifiable Diseases Data System (SINAN) was carried out and included all HIV-exposed neonates notified from 2013 to 2017 by the university hospital. The study population comprised 725 HIV-exposed neonates, of whom 672 neonates were exposed and uninfected, and 53 were exposed and infected. The estimated rate of MTCT in the period of 2013 to 2017 was 7.3%. Most pregnant women were ≥ 20 years old (86.9%), reported ≥ 8 years of schooling (53.2%), reported full-time or independent paid work (46.9%) and were residents in other cities of the state (61.7%). Regarding healthcare, 86.3% received prenatal care, 74.6% received Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) as prophylaxis during pregnancy, 81.8% received ART prophylaxis during childbirth and 78.1% underwent cesarean section. Among the neonates, 92.8% received ART prophylaxis and 94.3% were not breastfed. Despite these variables, the 7.3% MTCT rate found in this study makes it clear that the interventions recommended by the Ministry of Health were not fully adopted.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the feasibility of incorporating technology as a new alternative for treating topics on cervical lesions. Method: This is a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial with a prospective design. During the realization of this study, 43 women were included and divided between groups A (ointment without silver nanoparticles n = 23) and B (ointment with silver nanoparticles n = 20) clinically healthy and who used the unified health system. Results: There were no significant differences when comparing before and after the use of ointment for IVA test (p = 0.15), Schiller test (p = 0.15), cellular changes (p = 0.47) and microbiological analysis (p = 0.89) through cytology. After use, no adverse reaction was observed in the sample studied. Conclusion: Based on the results identified in this study, identified that the product is safe and does not promote adverse events. Regarding the effectiveness of the product in uterine cervical lesions, it is necessary to continue the study in phase II. Registro de Ensaios Clínicos Brasileiros: UTN: U1111-1218-2820.

RESUMEN Objetivo: evaluar la viabilidad de la incorporación de la tecnología como una nueva alternativa para el tratamiento de temas sobre lesiones cervicales. Método: Se trata de un ensayo clínico aleatorizado, doble ciego, controlado y con un diseño prospectivo. Durante la realización de este estudio se incluyeron 43 mujeres divididas entre los grupos A (pomada sin nanopartículas de plata n = 23) y B (pomada con nanopartículas de plata n = 20) clínicamente sanas y usuarias del sistema unificado de salud. Resultados: No hubo diferencias significativas al comparar antes y después del uso de la pomada para la prueba de IVA (p = 0,15), la prueba de Schiller (p = 0,15), los cambios celulares (p = 0,47) y el análisis microbiológico (p = 0,89) mediante citología. Tras el uso, no se observó ninguna reacción adversa en la muestra estudiada. Conclusiones: Con base en los resultados identificados en este estudio, se identificó que el producto es seguro y no promueve eventos adversos. Con relación a la eficacia del producto en lesiones cervicales uterinas, es necesario continuar el estudio en fase II. Registro de Estudios Clínicos Brasileños: UTN: U1111-1218-2820.

Abstract: Introduction: In western contemporary society, attempts to prevent death and suffering promote a medical training focused on dealing mostly with the biological aspects of illness and death, to the detriment of the psychosocial aspects related to those issues. Objective: The authors intended to identify medical students’ perceptions about the approach to death and dying in the light of Freudian theory about death. Method: This was a qualitative study with an exploratory approach, developed based on six focal groups consisting of 55 students from all the undergraduate medical school semesters from a federal university in the interior of the state Minas Gerais. The data produced was analyzed according to the thematic or category-based content analysis, from which the following categories emerged: 1- The death topic in undergraduate medical school; 2- The medical professional facing death. Results: To discuss death and dying in the formative process is to talk about the anguish in the face of human finitude. The students identified the approach to death and dying in undergraduate school, but in a limited and insufficient way. They indicated the need to increase contact with the topic in the curriculum, and to include, in a mandatory way, the contents on Palliative Care. The medical role encompasses both the care focused on healing and the assistance in moments when healing is not possible. The preparation to deal with death throughout undergraduate training involves personal conceptions and experiences, undergraduate practice, access to theoretical contents, specificities and subjective aspects related to each situation. The mentioned resources to deal with death, in addition to the studies, were religiosity and psychotherapy. Conclusion: To approach death in undergraduate medical curricula involves great complexity and challenges. From the viewpoint of psychological reality, human beings try to deny death and avoid suffering. Thus, the challenges in medical formation and practices consist in assuming the indissociable articulation between the biological, cultural and psychosocial aspects. To take care of life is also to take care of death and avoiding it may cause greater suffering to the patients, family members, students and medical professionals.

Resumo Introdução: Na sociedade ocidental contemporânea, as tentativas de evitar a morte e o sofrimento impulsionam a formação de médicos voltados para lidar majoritariamente com aspectos biológicos do adoecimento e da morte, em detrimento dos aspectos psicossociais relacionados a essas questões. Objetivo: Buscou-se identificar a percepção de estudantes de Medicina sobre a abordagem da morte e do morrer na graduação à luz de estudos atuais sobre a formação médica no país e algumas contribuições da teoria freudiana sobre a morte. Método: Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa de caráter exploratório, desenvolvida a partir de seis grupos focais compostos por 55 estudantes de todos os períodos do curso de Medicina de uma universidade federal do interior de Minas Gerais. O material produzido foi analisado a partir do referencial de análise de conteúdo temática ou categorial, e emergiram categorias: 1. a morte na formação médica; 2. o médico diante da morte. Resultado: Discutir a morte e o morrer no processo formativo é falar da angústia diante da finitude. Os estudantes identificaram a abordagem da morte e do morrer na graduação, mas de forma limitada e insuficiente. Apontaram a necessidade de ampliar o contato com os temas no currículo, melhorar as metodologias utilizadas e inserir de forma obrigatória os conteúdos de cuidados paliativos. O papel do médico comporta tanto o cuidado com foco na cura quanto a assistência nas situações em que a cura não for possível. A preparação para lidar com a morte ao longo da graduação envolve concepções e experiências pessoais, experiências na graduação, acesso aos conteúdos teóricos, especificidades e aspectos subjetivos relacionados a cada situação. Os recursos mencionados para lidar com a morte, além dos estudos, foram a religiosidade e psicoterapias. Conclusão: Abordar a morte nos currículos de graduação em Medicina envolve grande complexidade e desafios. Do ponto de vista da realidade psíquica, os seres humanos tentam negar a morte e evitar os sofrimentos. Dessa forma, os desafios da formação e da prática médica consistem em assumir a articulação indissociável entre aspectos biológicos, culturais e psicossociais. Cuidar da vida é também cuidar da morte, e evitá-la pode desencadear maior sofrimento aos pacientes, familiares, estudantes e médicos.

Resumo Objetivo Determinar a prevalência e as possíveis variáveis associadas à neoplasia intraepitelial anal e ao câncer anal em mulheres imunocompetentes com neoplasia intraepitelial cervical de alto grau. Métodos Estudo transversal em mulheres imunocompetentes com diagnóstico histológico de neoplasia intraepitelial cervical de alto grau e câncer cervical, feito entre janeiro de 2016 e setembro de 2020. Todas as mulheres foram submetidas a citologia anal e responderam a um questionário de caracterização e potenciais fatores de risco. Mulheres com citologia alterada foram submetidas a anuscopia e biópsia. Resultados No total, 69 mulheres foram incluídas no estudo. Destas, 7 (10,1%) tiveram resultados anormais de citologia anal (lesão de alto grau, células escamosas atípicas de significado indeterminado, e células escamosas atípicas, não se pode excluir lesões de alto grau: 28,5% cada; lesão de baixo grau: 14,3%). Das anuscopias, 3 (42,8%) demonstraram alterações. Das 2 biópsias realizadas, apenas 1 apresentou neoplasia intraepitelial anal de baixo grau. O número médio de gestações, partos vaginais e abortos estava associado à citologia anal anormal. No entanto, a maior média de partos cesáreos estava associada à citologia normal. Conclusão A prevalência de neoplasia intraepitelial anal foi compatível com dados de estudos recentes, principalmente daqueles feitos no Brasil. O rastreamento oportunista para neoplasia intraepitelial anal nesta população de alto risco deve ser considerado. A citologia anal é adequada para esse fim, devido ao seu baixo custo e viabilidade nos serviços públicos de saúde.

Abstract Objective To determine the prevalence and possible variables associated with anal intraepithelial neoplasia and anal cancer in immunocompetent women with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Methods A cross-sectional study involving immunocompetent women with a histological diagnosis of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer, conducted between January 2016 and September 2020. All women underwent anal cytology and answered a questionnaire on characterization and potential risk factors. Women with altered cytology were submitted to anoscopy and biopsy. Results A total of 69 women were included in the study. Of these, 7 (10.1%) had abnormal anal cytology results: (high-grade lesion, atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, and atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude high-grade lesions: 28,5% each; low grade lesion: 14,3%). Of the anoscopies, 3 (42.8%) showed alterations. Of the 2 (28,5% of all abnormal cytology results) biopsies performed, only 1 showed low-grade anal intraepithelial neoplasia. The average number of pregnancies, vaginal deliveries, and abortions was associated with abnormal anal cytology. However, the highest mean regarding the cesarean sections was associated with normal cytology. Conclusion The prevalence of anal intraepithelial neoplasia was compatible with data from recent studies, especially those conducted in Brazil. Opportunistic screening for anal intraepithelial neoplasia in this high-risk population should be considered. Anal cytology is suitable for this purpose, due to its low cost and feasibility in public health services.
