Pre-germination treatments of melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water

Resumo A produção de meloeiro no semiárido brasileiro está sujeita a utilização de águas marginais com salinidade elevada. Entretanto, a utilização de reguladores e bioativadores no tratamento de sementes podem mitigar os efeitos nocivos dos sais na água de irrigação. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de tratamentos pré-germinativos com fitorreguladores e bioativador em sementes de melão para a produção de mudas irrigadas com água biossalina de efluente de piscicultura. Para isso, dois ensaios com os híbridos Goldex e Grand Prix foram realizados separadamente. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 4 × 3 (tratamentos pré-germinativos × diluições de água). Além do controle, as sementes foram tratadas com os ácidos salicílico e giberélico, e tiametoxam. As águas utilizadas para irrigação foram a de abastecimento local, efluente de piscicultura (água biossalina) e estas diluídas a 50%. Durante quatorze dias foram realizadas as análises fisiológicas e bioquímicas. A água biossalina (5,0 dS m-1) não afetou a emergência de plântulas de meloeiro Goldex, mas prejudicou o estabelecimento da cultivar Grand Prix. Os pré-tratamentos de sementes com os ácidos salicílico e giberélico atenuam os efeitos da salinidade da água e promovem modulações no crescimento, proporcionando mudas de meloeiro mais vigorosas.
Abstract Melon production in the Brazilian semi-arid region is subject to the use of marginal waters with high salinity. However, the use of regulators and bioactivators in seed treatment can mitigate the harmful effects of salts in irrigation water. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments with plant regulators and bioactivator in melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water from fish farming effluent. For this, two trials with the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids were carried out separately. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (pre-germination treatments × water dilutions). In addition to the control, the seeds were treated with salicylic and gibberellic acids and thiamethoxam. The waters used for irrigation were local-supply water, fish farming effluent (biosaline water) and these diluted to 50%. Physiological and biochemical analyses were performed for fourteen days. Biosaline water (5.0 dS m-1) did not affect the emergence of Goldex melon seedlings, but compromised the establishment of the Grand Prix cultivar. Seed pre-treatments with salicylic and gibberellic acids attenuate the effects of water salinity and promote growth modulations, resulting in more vigorous melon seedlings.

Objectives: Past suicide attempt (SA) is one of the most important risk factors for suicide death. An ideation-to-action framework posits that impulsivity, potentially traumatic events, and mental disorders also play a role in increasing suicide risk. This study aimed to assess the association between trait impulsivity, lifetime exposure to trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with SA in a sample of Brazilian college students. Methods: A total of 2,137 participants filled self-reported questionnaires consisting of a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, Trauma History Questionnaire, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Civilian version, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Results: Our findings suggest that trait impulsivity may be interpreted as exerting a distal effect on SA, even in the presence of other variables – such as trauma history, psychological neglect, and PTSD – which also increase the odds of SA. High and medium levels of impulsivity, history of trauma, and PTSD increased the likelihood of SA. Conclusions: Intervention strategies to prevent SA may target trait impulsivity and exposure to traumatic experiences.

Resumo Este trabalho objetivou obter proteases aspárticas de interesse industrial e biotecnológico a partir do estômago do peixe xaréu (Caranx hippos). Para isso, foi obtido um extrato bruto do estômago, o qual foi submetido a uma purificação parcial por salting-out onde se obteve o extrato enzimático (EE). As proteases do EE foram caracterizadas físico-quimicamente e através de zimograma. Além disso, o efeito de agentes químicos sobre sua atividade também foi avaliado. Através de salting-out foi possível obter uma purificação de 1,6 vezes com rendimento de 49,4%. Foram observadas duas proteases ácidas presentes no EE através de zimograma. A temperatura ótima e a estabilidade térmica para as proteases ácidas do EE foram de 55 ºC e 45 °C, respectivamente. O pH ótimo e a estabilidade ao pH encontrados para estas enzimas foram o pH 1,5 e 7,0, respectivamente. Observou-se a inibição total da atividade proteolítica ácida do EE na presença de pepstatina A. O ditiotreitol (DTT) e o Ca2+ não promoveram efeito significativo na atividade enzimática. Na presença de metais pesados, como Al3+, Cd2+ e Hg2+, o EE manteve mais de 70% de atividade enzimática do EE. Os resultados mostram que é possível obter, a partir do estômago de C. hippos, proteases aspárticas com alta atividade proteolítica e características que demonstram potencial para aplicações industriais e biotecnológicas.
Abstract This work aimed to obtain aspartic proteases of industrial and biotechnological interest from the stomach of the crevalle jack fish (Caranx hippos). In order to do so, a crude extract (CE) of the stomach was obtained and subjected to a partial purification by salting-out, which resulted in the enzyme extract (EE) obtainment. EE proteases were characterized physicochemically and by means of zymogram. In addition, the effect of chemical agents on their activity was also assessed. By means of salting-out it was possible to obtain a purification of 1.6 times with a yield of 49.4%. Two acid proteases present in the EE were observed in zymogram. The optimum temperature and thermal stability for EE acidic proteases were 55 ºC and 45 °C, respectively. The optimum pH and pH stability found for these enzymes were pH 1.5 and 7.0, respectively. Total inhibition of EE acid proteolytic activity was observed in the presence of pepstatin A. dithiothreitol (DTT) and Ca2+ did not promote a significant effect on enzyme activity. In the presence of heavy metals, such as Al3+, Cd2+ and Hg2+, EE acidic proteases showed more than 70% of their enzymatic activity. The results show that it is possible to obtain, from the stomach of C. hippos, aspartic proteases with high proteolytic activity and characteristics that demonstrate potential for industrial and biotechnological applications.

Resumo As vísceras e outros resíduos do processamento de peixes são geralmente descartados pela indústria pesqueira. Esses resíduos podem ser uma fonte de enzimas digestivas com potencial industrial e biotecnológico. Neste estudo, objetivamos a extração, caracterização e aplicação de proteases aspárticas do estômago de Carangoides bartholomaei (Cuvier, 1833). Um extrato bruto do estômago foi obtido e submetido a um processo de purificação parcial, que obteve um Extrato Purificado (EP) com uma atividade proteolítica específica de 54,0 U⋅mg-1. Foi obtida uma purificação de 1,9 vezes e um rendimento de 41%. O EP apresenta duas isoformas de proteases ácidas e atividade proteolítica máxima a 45 °C e pH 2,0. A atividade proteolítica do EP foi estável na faixa de pH de 1,5 a 7,0 e temperatura de 25 °C a 50 °C. O EP manteve 35% de sua atividade proteolítica na presença de NaCl a 15% (m/v), mas foi totalmente inibida pela pepstatina A. As proteases ácidas do EP apresentaram alta atividade na presença de metais pesados como o Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Al3+ e Cu2+. A utilização de EP como aditivo enzimático na extração de colágeno a partir de escamas de tilápia do Nilo dobrou o rendimento do processo. Os resultados indicam um potencial dessas proteases para aplicações industriais e biotecnológicas
Abstract The viscera and other residues from fish processing are commonly discarded by the fishing industry. These by-products can be a source of digestive enzymes with industrial and biotechnological potential. In this study, we aimed at the extraction, characterization, and application of acidic proteases from the stomach of Carangoides bartholomaei (Cuvier, 1833). A crude extract from the stomachs was obtained and submitted to a partial purification process by salting-out, which obtained a Purified Extract (PE) with a specific proteolytic activity of 54.0 U⋅mg-1. A purification of 1.9 fold and a yield of 41% were obtained. The PE presents two isoforms of acidic proteases and a maximum proteolytic activity at 45 °C and pH 2.0. The PE acidic proteolytic activity was stable in the pH range of 1.5 to 7.0 and temperature from 25 °C to 50 °C. Purified Extract kept 35% of its proteolytic activity at the presence of NaCl 15% (m/v) but was totally inhibited by pepstatin A. Purified Extract aspartic proteases presented high activity in the presence of heavy metals such as Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Al3+, and Cu2+. The utilization of PE as an enzymatic addictive in the collagen extraction from Nile tilapia scales has doubled the process yield. The results indicate the potential of these aspartic proteases for industrial and biotechnological applications.

Abstract In the present paper we report a novel synthesis method of silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) using 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as silicon precursor and low molecular weight chitosan (CS) as reducing agent. The obtained SiQDs have a hydrodynamic diameter of 2.3 nm, water dispersible, presents blue emission band at 434.5 nm (2.85 eV) with a Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage 1931 (CIE1931) chromaticity coordinates (x = 0.1665, y = 0.1222), the experimental absorbance of the SiQDS was measured and the band gap (Eg) was estimated through PerkinElmer’s method, for which the obtained value was 3.1 eV and a positive ζ-potential of + 35 mV, resulting in photonics, microelectronics, and biotechnological potential applications.

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively evaluate demographic, anthropometric and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) METHODS: This was a longitudinal observational study of surviving pediatric post-COVID-19 patients (n=53) and pediatric subjects without laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 included as controls (n=52) was performed. RESULTS: The median duration between COVID-19 diagnosis (n=53) and follow-up was 4.4 months (0.8-10.7). Twenty-three of 53 (43%) patients reported at least one persistent symptom at the longitudinal follow-up visit and 12/53 (23%) had long COVID-19, with at least one symptom lasting for >12 weeks. The most frequently reported symptoms at the longitudinal follow-up visit were headache (19%), severe recurrent headache (9%), tiredness (9%), dyspnea (8%), and concentration difficulty (4%). At the longitudinal follow-up visit, the frequencies of anemia (11% versus 0%, p=0.030), lymphopenia (42% versus 18%, p=0.020), C-reactive protein level of >30 mg/L (35% versus 0%, p=0.0001), and D-dimer level of >1000 ng/mL (43% versus 6%, p=0.0004) significantly reduced compared with baseline values. Chest X-ray abnormalities (11% versus 2%, p=0.178) and cardiac alterations on echocardiogram (33% versus 22%, p=0.462) were similar at both visits. Comparison of characteristic data between patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit and controls showed similar age (p=0.962), proportion of male sex (p=0.907), ethnicity (p=0.566), family minimum monthly wage (p=0.664), body mass index (p=0.601), and pediatric pre-existing chronic conditions (p=1.000). The Pediatric Quality of Live Inventory 4.0 scores, median physical score (69 [0-100] versus 81 [34-100], p=0.012), and school score (60 [15-100] versus 70 [15-95], p=0.028) were significantly lower in pediatric patients with COVID-19 at the longitudinal follow-up visit than in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with COVID-19 showed a longitudinal impact on HRQoL parameters, particularly in physical/school domains, reinforcing the need for a prospective multidisciplinary approach for these patients. These data highlight the importance of closer monitoring of children and adolescents by the clinical team after COVID-19.

Hydrogeochemical characterization and quantification of the groundwater mixture in a hydrogeological basin of the middle zone of San Luis Potosí

Abstract The hydrogeochemical characterization and water-rock interaction processes in the sub-basins of Santa Catarina and Ocampo-Paraíso in the Zona Media of San Luis Potosí have allowed identifying the types of groundwater. The results of the chemical analysis and the regional geological study show the possible rock-water interaction mechanisms. These results indicate that the composition of the groundwater in each of these basins reflects the dissolution of the carbonate and magnesium minerals of the carbonate rocks of Cretaceous age (El Abra Formation), by rainwater, and of the groundwater through a granular medium with a strong influence of the material of volcanic origin. The Ca-HCO3, Ca-Mg-HCO3, water type are modified during the groundwater flow by incorporation of Na+ and SO4 2- ions. The San Nicolás (sub-basin III) has covered by fluvial deposits in a climatic conditions of semiarid regions. The hydrogeochemical analysis of major ions, lithium and bromine allowed identifying that the extracted water from the region is a product of mixing process, involving three end-members (ternary mixture). The first, Santa Catarina (C1), has the lowest concentrations of bromine and lithium and its recharge occur in the highest altitude land in the region, towards the Sierra de Álvarez. The second end member (C2), displays high values of bromine, low in lithium and originates towards the Ocampo Paraíso Valley. The third end member (C3), has low bromine concentrations, high in lithium, and comes from San Nicolás Tolentino area. The mixing percentages indicate that C1 contributes 50%, C2 gives 31% and C3 adds 19% water to the system.
Resumen Los procesos de caracterización hidrogeoquímica e interacción agua-roca en las subcuencas de Santa Catarina y Ocampo-Paraíso en la Zona Media de San Luis Potosí han permitido identificar los tipos de aguas subterráneas. Los resultados del análisis químico y el estudio geológico regional han permitido documentar los posibles mecanismos de interacción del agua con la roca. Los resultados indican que la composición del agua subterránea en cada una de estas cuencas refleja la disolución por el agua de lluvia de los minerales de carbonato y magnesio de las rocas carbonatadas de la formación del Cretácico (Formación El Abra del Cretácico) y del flujo subterráneo a través de un medio granular con fuerte influencia del material de origen volcánico. Las aguas del tipo Ca-HCO3, Ca-Mg-HCO3 se modifican durante el flujo subterráneo mediante la incorporación de iones Na+ y SO4 2-. En el caso de la subcuenca III de San Nicolás, se ha documentado que su relleno incluye depósitos fluviales que pueden depositarse en condiciones climáticas de regiones semiáridas. El análisis hidrogeoquímico de las concentraciones de iones mayores, litio y bromo, permitieron identificar que el agua que se extrae de la región es producto de un proceso de mezcla en la que intervienen tres miembros extremos (mezcla ternaria): El primero, Santa Catarina (C1), tiene las concentraciones más bajas de bromo y litio en la recarga ocurre en las partes de mayor altitud en la región, hacia la Sierra de Álvarez. El segundo miembro (C2), tiene valores altos del bromo, bajo en litio y se origina hacia el valle de Ocampo Paraíso. El tercer miembro (C3), tiene bajas concentraciones de bromo, alto en litio y proviene de área de San Nicolás Tolentino. Los porcentajes de mezcla indican que C1, aporta el 50%, C2 contribuye con el 31% y C3 aporta 19 %, del agua al sistema.

Abstract: The automotive industry requires new sensors to improve automotive performance, comfort and safety. These sensors will need the electrical power for their operation, which could be supplied by future MEMS energy harvesting devices. We present the design of a MEMS-based piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting (PVEH) device. The design is formed of two cantilevers of trapezoidal shape (2500 x 1064 x 9 μm) that have two proof masses in their ends. The cantilevers and proof masses are designed of silicon with a PZT-5H film, considering the PiezoMUMPs fabrication process of MEMSCAP. This PVEH device can generate voltage when its structure is deformed at resonance under a vibration acceleration. Finite element method (FEM) models of the PVEH device are developed to predict its electrical and structural behavior at resonance under a vibration acceleration of 12 m/s2. The proposed device has a resonant frequency of 207.8 Hz, a maximum deflection of 201 μm and a generated voltage of 61.5 mV with an electrical resistive load of 10 kΩ. A PVEH devices array could be used to supply electrical power to sensors of modern and future automobiles.

Zootechnical evaluation of Penaeus vannamei larvae fed endemic microalgae and a probiotic from the Gulf of California

Abstract Three marine microalgae strains (Schizochytrium sp., Navicula sp., and Grammatophora sp.) and a mix of three probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus spp.) were evaluated to feed white-shrimp larvae (Penaeus vannamei). These species were cultured outdoors without temperature or light control. Chaetoceros muelleri was cultured with standard techniques and used as control. Penaeus vanammei larvae were cultured at densities of 175 nauplii L-1 in 70 L experimental units. Microalgae concentration was maintained between 70,000 and 125,000 cells mL-1 and probiotic at 114 x 103 UFC mL-1. Shrimp larvae were cultured in nauplius stage V and maintained up to Mysis I. The bromatological composition and its performance in larvae were assessed at the end of the experiment. The best survivals were observed in trials with the control Chaetoceros muelleri (61.6 %), the mixture of Grammatophora sp. and Schizochytrium sp. plus probiotics (58.3 %) and the mixture of Grammatophora sp. and Schizochytrium sp. (55.8 %). A mortality close to 100 % was observed with Navicula sp. monoalgal fed. These results suggest that Grammatophora sp. + Schizochytrium sp. cultured outdoors can be used to feed shrimp larvae.
Resumen Se evaluaron tres cepas de microalgas marinas (Schizochytrium sp., Navicula sp. y Grammatophora sp.) y una mezcla de tres bacterias probióticas (Lactobacillus spp.) para alimentar larvas de camarón blanco (Penaeus vannamei). Estas especies fueron cultivadas al exterior sin control de temperatura y de luz. Chaetoceros muelleri se cultivó con técnicas estándar y se utilizó como control. Las larvas de Penaeus vanammei se cultivaron a densidades de 175 nauplios L-1 en unidades experimentales de 70 L. La concentración de microalgas se mantuvo entre 70,000 y 125,000 células mL-1 y el probiótico a 114 x 103 UFC mL-1. Las larvas de camarón se cultivaron en nauplios estadio V y se mantuvieron hasta Mysis I. Al final del experimento, se evaluó la composición bromatológica y su desempeño en larvas. Las mejores supervivencias se observaron en ensayos realizados con Chaetoceros muelleri como control (61.6 %), la mezcla de Grammatophora sp. y Schizochytrium sp. con probióticos (58.3 %) y la mezcla de Grammatophora sp. y Schizochytrium sp. (55.8 %). Se observó una mortalidad cercana al 100 % con alimentación monoalgal de Navicula sp. Estos resultados sugieren que Grammatophora sp. + Schizochytrium sp. cultivadas al exterior pueden ser empleadas para alimentar larvas de camarón.

Resumo Embora as infecções invasivas e a mortalidade causada por espécies de Candida estejam aumentando entre pacientes comprometidos, a resistência a agentes antifúngicos comuns também é um problema crescente. Analisamos 60 leveduras isoladas de pacientes com candidíase invasiva utilizando como estratégia PCR/RFLP baseada na região espaçadora transcrita interna (ITS2) para identificar diferentes espécies patogênicas de Candida. A análise por PCR foi realizada a partir de ADN genómico com um par de iniciadores da região ITS2-5.8S rDNA. As amostras PCR-positivas foram caracterizadas por RFLP. A restrição resultou em 23 isolados identificados como C. albicans usando AlwI, 24 isolados como C. parapsilosis usando RsaI e 13 como C. tropicalis usando XmaI. Em seguida, avaliou-se o grupo de todos os isolados quanto à sua susceptibilidade a um painel de leveduras killer previamente descritas, resultando em 75% sendo suscetíveis a pelo menos uma levedura killer, enquanto que as restantes não foram inibidas por qualquer cepa. C. albicans foi o grupo mais suscetível enquanto C. tropicalis teve o menor número de inibições. Não se obteve um padrão de inibição específico da espécie com este painel de leveduras killer. Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Pichia kluyveri e Wickerhamomyces anomalus foram as cepas que inibiram a maioria dos isolados de Candida spp.
Abstract Although invasive infections and mortality caused by Candida species are increasing among compromised patients, resistance to common antifungal agents is also an increasing problem. We analyzed 60 yeasts isolated from patients with invasive candidiasis using a PCR/RFLP strategy based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) region to identify different Candida pathogenic species. PCR analysis was performed from genomic DNA with a primer pair of the ITS2-5.8S rDNA region. PCR-positive samples were characterized by RFLP. Restriction resulted in 23 isolates identified as C. albicans using AlwI, 24 isolates as C. parapsilosis using RsaI, and 13 as C. tropicalis using XmaI. Then, a group of all isolates were evaluated for their susceptibility to a panel of previously described killer yeasts, resulting in 75% being susceptible to at least one killer yeast while the remaining were not inhibited by any strain. C. albicans was the most susceptible group while C. tropicalis had the fewest inhibitions. No species-specific pattern of inhibition was obtained with this panel of killer yeasts. Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Pichia kluyveri and Wickerhamomyces anomalus were the strains that inhibited the most isolates of Candida spp.

The non-commercial copolymers E45S8, E45S17 and their mixtures with Pluronic® P123 (E21P67E21) were studied as carriers of the model drug griseofulvin. Critical micelle concentration (cmc) (dye solubilisation method), drug solubilisation capacity (Scp and Sh) determined by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and cytotoxicity (LDH activity in human neutrophils) were studied. E45S17 1.0 wt.% dispersions presented colloidal aggregates limiting its Scp in comparison to E45S8, but in 0.1 wt.% solutions this phenomenon seemed to be absent and E45S17 presented a higher Scp. The mixtures that showed the best Scp results contained 50% of P123 and presented low cmc. An evaluation of literature data suggested a minimum Em content of 62% in EmSn copolymers below which the increase of Sn length does not lead to an increase of Sh. The results suggested no toxicity of the copolymers on human neutrophils, supporting the use of P123 and poly(styrene oxide) containing copolymers as drug carriers.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This paper presents a curve-fitting technique for multivalued two-dimensional piecewise-linear paths. The proposed method is based on a decomposed formulation of the canonical piecewise linear model description of Chua and Kang. The path is treated as a parametric system of two position equations (x(k), y(k)), where k is an artificial parameter to map each variable (x and y) into an independent k-domain.
Este artículo presenta una técnica de ajuste de curva para trayectorias lineales a tramos bidimensionales multivaluadas. El método propuesto se basa en una formulación descompuesta del modelo canónico para descripción lineal a tramos de Chua y Kang. La trayectoria es tratada como un sistema paramétrico de dos ecuaciones de posición (x(k), y(k)), donde k es un parámetro artificial para mapear cada variable (x and y) en un dominio k independiente.

This work shows the results of a Proficiency Testing performed by a partnership between INMETRO and ANP. The performance of 49 Brazilian laboratories (using the z-score statistical test) in determining 10 quality parameters of ethanol fuel and biodiesel was evaluated. The certified reference values were provided by INMETRO, allowing a more rigorous assessment of the laboratories. For hydrous ethanol, the acidity parameter showed the lowest number of laboratories with satisfactory results (48%), while 85% of the laboratories presented satisfactory results for ethanol content. For biodiesel, the percentage of laboratories with satisfactory results ranged from 46% (kinematic viscosity) to 92% (acid number).

Nutritional supplementation assessment with whey proteins and TGF-β in patients with Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the intestines, resulting in breakage of the intestinal barrier, pathological inflammation and nutritional disorders that encompass from trace elements deficiency to severe malnutrition. Nutritional interventions either alone or associated to drug therapy may be effective to achieve and maintain inflammation remission. Objective: To evaluate usual food intake as quantitative and qualitatively, in CD patients; and describe the effect of a supplement containing whey proteins and TGF- on their body composition. Patients and methods: Dietary intake was assessed considering 42 consecutive patients, followed in a tertiary center, and by using the 3-day food recall and food intake frequency questionnaire. Body composition was assessed previously and 8 weeks after supplementation with a diet containing whey proteins and TGF-β (N = 22). Results and discussion: Considering carbohydrates and lipids, most patients had adequate dietary intake according recommendations. Protein, saturated fat, B12 vitamin and zinc intakes were higher than the recommended values. The dietary fiber, A, D, C and E vitamins, calcium, iron, folate, potassium and sodium intakes did not reach the recommended requirements in most patients. Patients supplemented with the whey protein and TGF-β dietary presented a positive increment in their lean body mass, when compared to non-supplemented group. Conclusion: CD patients require nutritional orientation. Whey protein intake resulted in significant differences, such as improvement in Lean Body Mass and reduction in Fat percentage.
La enfermedad de Crohn (EC) es un desorden inflamatorio crónico, que afecta principalmente el intestino, resultando en el rompimiento de la barrera intestinal, inflamación patológica y disturbios nutricionales que pueden variar de la deficiencia de oligoelementos a la desnutrición grave. Intervenciones nutricionales pueden ser eficaces para alcanzar y mantener la remisión del proceso inflamatorio, aisladamente, o en combinación con terapia farmacológica. Objetivo: Evaluar el consumo alimentario cuantitativo y cualitativo en pacientes con EC y el efecto de la suplementación nutricional con dieta conteniendo proteínas del suero de leche y TGF-β en la composición corporal de los pacientes. Pacientes y métodos: La ingestión alimentaria fue evaluada en 42 pacientes, aplicando el registro alimentario de 3 días y el cuestionario de frecuencia alimentaria. La composición corporal fue evaluada en esos pacientes, siendo que 22 recibieron la dieta conteniendo proteínas del suero de leche y TGF-β y 20 pacientes no fueron suplementados (grupo control). Resultados y discusión: La mayoría de los pacientes presentó ingestión alimentaria adecuada de carbohidratos y lípidos. El consumo de proteína, grasa saturada, vitamina B12 y zinc fue superior a los valores recomendados. El consumo de fibras alimentarias, vitamina A, D, C, y E, calcio, hierro, folato, potasio y sodio no satisfizo las necesidades recomendadas en la mayoría de los pacientes. Hubo un aumento de la masa magra de los pacientes suplementados con la proteína del suero de leche y TGF-β Conclusión: El grupo de pacientes con enfermedad de Crohn presentó, en su mayoría, un consumo adecuado de carbohidratos y lípidos, y el consumo de proteína fue superior al recomendado en más de la mitad de los pacientes. Se encontró una ingesta inadecuada de vitaminas A, C, D y E, fibras, calcio, folato, hiero y zinc. La ingestión de proteína del suero de leche mejoró la composición corporal de los pacientes.
