Resumen Introducción: el consumo de edulcorantes no nutritivos (ENN) se ha incrementado. Estudios recientes han reportado posibles efectos metabólicos de los ENN, por lo que la percepción de su consumo podría haber cambiado en población general y profesionales de la salud. Objetivo: describir y comparar las creencias sobre los ENN en consumidores, no consumidores y profesionales de la salud, así como conocer las principales opiniones de los profesionales de la salud para recomendar o no el consumo de ENN. Métodos: se aplicaron encuestas a 100 consumidores, 100 no consumidores y 100 profesionales de la salud (nutriólogos y médicos) para evaluar actitudes positivas, negativas o neutras en torno a ciertas creencias de los ENN, la información que creen tener, seguridad, precio, efectos secundarios y sabor. Además, se evaluó la opinión de los profesionales de la salud para recomendar o no su consumo y las razones asociadas. Resultados: se encontraron diferencias entre los tres grupos en torno a la seguridad, los efectos secundarios y el sabor de los ENN (p < 0.01). La postura más frecuente de los profesionales de la salud (48 %) es que los ENN deben limitarse, utilizarse transitoriamente y en ciertos pacientes. Se observó una postura más positiva con respecto a los ENN en los consumidores excepto por su precio, más neutral en los no consumidores excepto por su sabor y más negativa en los profesionales de la salud en todos los aspectos. Conclusiones: las creencias sobre los ENN difieren entre los grupos estudiados, lo cual puede influir en su consumo o en la recomendación de su uso.

Abstract Introduction: the consumption of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) has increased. Recent studies have reported possible metabolic effects of NNS, and this may influence the perception regarding their consumption in the general population and health professionals. Objective: to describe and compare the beliefs about NNS in consumers, non-consumers, and health professionals; and to explore the reasons and opinions of health professionals for recommending or not their consumption. Methods: surveys were applied to 100 consumers, 100 non-consumers and 100 health professionals (dietitians and physicians) to evaluate a positive, negative, or neutral attitude towards certain beliefs regarding NNS, including the information they have, safety, price, side effects and taste. In addition, the opinion of health professionals for recommending or not the consumption of NNS and the related reasons was evaluated. Results: statistically significant differences regarding the safety, side effects and taste of NNS were found between the three groups (p < 0.01). The most frequent opinion of health professionals (48 %) is that NNS should be limited, used as a transition and in certain patients. Consumers tend to have a more positive opinion about NNS except for the price, non-consumers have a more neutral position except for taste, and health professionals have a more negative perception of NNS in all aspects. Conclusions: the beliefs regarding NNS differed among the studied groups, which might influence their consumption or recommendation of its use.

ABSTRACT Objective : To evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the growth and crude protein content of five perennial pastures of Ecuador. Materials and Methods : To evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the growth and crude protein content of the species Lolium perenne L. var. Alto, Lolium perenne x Lolium multiflorum var. Shogun, Festuca arundinacea Schreb var. Alta Barolex, Dactylis glomerata L. var. Quick Draw and Festuca arundinacea x Lolium multiflorum var. Premium, six progressive doses of nitrogen were applied (0, 70, 140, 210, 280 and 350 kg N ha-1 year-1). A split-plot design was used, where the species was placed in the large plot, and the nitrogen doses, in the small ones, with three repetitions. The variables biomass production, crude protein and normalized differential vegetation index, were evaluated. The data were analyzed through the statistical program INFOSTAT®. Results : The biomass production indicated statistically significant differences (p < 0,05) for the studied factors species and nitrogen doses, but not for the interaction of such factors. D. glomerata and F. arundinacea showed the lowest biomass production values (2 457 and 2 490 kg DM ha-1), compared with L. perenne, which had a moderate yield. F. arundinacea x L. multiflorum and L. perenne x L. multiflorum reached the highest biomass values (3 407 and 3 364 kg DM ha-1). The crude protein content also increased with the nitrogen doses. In turn, the normalized differential vegetation index increased, also according to a quadratic model, with a different response among species. Conclusions : All the species responded positively to the nitrogen application doses. It was determined that there is increase in the biomass production, crude protein content and normalized differential vegetation index.

RESUMEN Objetivo :Evaluar el efecto de la fertilización nitrogenada en el crecimiento y el contenido de proteína bruta de cinco pastos perennes en Ecuador. Materiales y Métodos : Para evaluar el efecto de la fertilización nitrogenada en el crecimiento y el contenido de proteína bruta de las especies Lolium perenne L. var. Alto, Lolium perenne x Lolium multiflorum var. Shogun, Festuca arundinacea Schreb var. Alta Barolex, Dactylis glomerata L. var. Quick Draw y Festuca arundinacea x Lolium multiflorum var. Premium, se aplicaron seis dosis progresivas de nitrógeno (0, 70, 140, 210, 280 y 350 kg de N ha-1 año-1). Se utilizó un diseño de parcelas dividas, donde se ubicó la especie en la parcela grande, y las dosis de nitrógeno en las pequeñas, con tres repeticiones. Se evaluaron las variables producción de biomasa, proteína bruta e índice de vegetación diferencial normalizado. Los datos se analizaron mediante el programa estadístico INFOSTAT®. Resultados : La producción de biomasa indicó diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p < 0,05) para los factores en estudio especies y dosis de nitrógeno, pero no para la interacción de dichos factores. D. glomerata y F. arundinacea presentaron los valores de producción de biomasa más bajos (2 457 y 2 490 kg de MS ha-1), comparados con L. perenne, que tuvo un rendimiento intermedio. F. arundinacea x L. multiflorum y L. perenne x L. multiflorum alcanzaron los valores más altos de biomasa (3 407 y 3 364 kg de MS ha-1). El contenido de proteína bruta también aumentó con las dosis de nitrógeno. A su vez, el índice de vegetación diferencial normalizado se incrementó, también de acuerdo a un modelo cuadrático, con una respuesta diferente entre especies. Conclusiones : Todas las especies respondieron positivamente a las dosis de aplicación de nitrógeno. Se determinó que existe incremento en la producción de biomasa, contenido de proteína bruta y el índice de vegetación diferencial normalizado.

Resumen Los bosques secos andinos son ecosistemas con alta diversidad de flora y fauna y tienen alto riesgo de extinción debido a la presión de la actividad humana. V. macracantha es una especie nativa del bosque seco andino que tiene potencial para la reforestación y también brinda beneficios en sistemas agroforestales, debido a su capacidad de fijación de nitrógeno, el suministro de materia orgánica, la producción de sombra y protección del viento. La propagación de esta especie es limitada debido al bajo porcentaje de germinación de las semillas, las cuales presentan dormancia. El propósito de esta investigación fue determinar el método de escarificación más eficaz para la germinación de las semillas de V. macracantha. Dos tipos de métodos fueron probados, la inmersión en ácidos fuertes (escarificación química), y la remoción de la corteza de la semilla a través del limado, corte y remojo en agua caliente (escarificación física). Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completamente al azar con 3 repeticiones. Para los métodos químicos, se usó ácido sulfúrico, nítrico, y fosfórico (50% v/v) a diferentes tiempos de exposición: 5, 10, 15, 20 y 25 minutos, respectivamente. Se midieron tres variables como sigue: porcentaje de germinación, la cantidad de hojas y la altura de la planta. Los métodos químicos no presentaron ninguna diferencia significativa en el porcentaje de germinación. El método físico de limado de la semilla tuvo el porcentaje más alto de germinación con un 46%, en comparación al control que tuvo el 6%. Ningún tratamiento tuvo diferencias significativas en los parámetros de cantidad de hojas y la altura de la planta.

Abstract The dry Andean forests are ecosystems with a high diversity of flora and fauna and are at high risk of extinction due to the pressure of human activity. V. macracantha is a native species of the dry Andean forest, which has potential for reforestation and also provides benefits in agroforestry systems, due to its nitrogen fixation capacity, the supply of organic matter, the production of shade and wind protection. The multiplication of this species is limited due to the low percentage of seed germination, which present dormancy. The aim of this research was to determine the most effective scarification method for seeds germination of V. macracantha. Two types of methods were tested, the immersion in strong acids (chemical scarification), and the seed bark through filing, cutting and soaking into hot water (physical scarification). A completely randomized block design with 3 replicates was used. For the chemical methods, sulfuric, nitric, and phosphoric acid (50% v/v) were used at different exposure times: 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 minutes, respectively. Three variables were measured as follows: percentage of germination, the number of leaves and the plant height. The chemical methods did not present any significant difference in the percentage of germination. The physical method of seed filing, had achieved the highest percentage of germination with 46%, compared to control treatment, which had achieved 6%. No treatment performed significant differences in the parameters of number of leaves and plant height.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, iron oxide based magnetic nanoparticles are used in several science and technology applications due to their magnetic properties. Likewise, these materials are used in biomedical applications such as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic hyperthermia, targeted drug delivery, etc. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of Mg, Zn-containing ferrites with the chemical formula of Mg1-xZnxFe2O4 (0-0,9) were performed. Synthesis was carried out by thermal decomposition method (DT) using metal acetylacetonates (Mg, Zn and Fe) as reactants and oleic acid/phenyl-ether as reaction medium. The obtaining materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The X-ray diffraction patterns of the materials obtained exhibited the formation a single crystalline phase with an inverse spinel structure that corresponds to a magnesium ferrite (JCPDS 88-1935). Magnetic properties of obtained ferrites, such as saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent magnetization (Mr) and coercive field (Hc) were also evaluated by VSM. Ms increased as Zn2+ content was increased, reaching values within 20,22 to 40,03 emu/g, this increase was attributed to the variation of the cations distribution in the spinel structure. FT-IR and TEM results demonstrated that the synthesized nanoparticles have an oleic acid coating, an average size below 10 nm and morphology close to the spherical. According to these results it is possible to incorporate Zn2+ into a crystalline structure of MgFe2O4, by this particular DT method, obtaining ferrites potentially viable for biomedical applications.

RESUMEN Actualmente las nanopartículas magnéticas a base de óxido de hierro son utilizadas en diversas aplicaciones en las áreas de ciencia y tecnología, principalmente por sus propiedades magnéticas. Asimismo, estos materiales son utilizados en aplicaciones biomédicas tales como en la obtención de imágenes por resonancia magnética, hipertermia magnética, liberación de fármacos, etc. En este trabajo se reporta la síntesis y caracterización de ferritas de Mg y Zn con composición química Mg1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0-0,9) mediante el método de descomposición térmica (DT). Se utilizaron acetilacetonatos metálicos (Mg, Zn y Fe) como reactivos y ácido oleico/feniléter como medio de reacción. Los materiales obtenidos se caracterizaron utilizando las técnicas de difracción de rayos X (DRX), magnetometría de muestra vibrante (MMV), espectroscopia de infrarrojo por transformada de Fourier (FT-IR) y microscopía electrónica de transmisión (MET). Los patrones de difracción de rayos X de los materiales obtenidos muestran la formación de una única fase cristalina con estructura de espinela inversa correspondiente a una ferrita de magnesio (JCPDS 88-1935). Las propiedades magnéticas, tales como magnetización de saturación (Ms), magnetización remanente (Mr) y campo coercitivo (Hc) de las ferritas Mg-Zn fueron evaluadas mediante MMV. Se encontró que la Ms aumenta a medida que se incrementa el contenido de Zn2+ alcanzando valores de 20,22 a 40,30 emu/g, dicho cambio se atribuye a la variación de la distribución de los cationes presentes en la estructura de espinela. Mediante FT-IR y MET se determinó que las partículas sintetizadas poseen un recubrimiento superficial de ácido oleico, una morfología cercana a la esférica y un tamaño de partícula inferior a los 10 nm. De estos resultados se confirma la viabilidad de la incorporación de iones Zn dentro de la estructura cristalina de MgFe2O4 utilizando el método de DT, obteniéndose ferritas potencialmente utilizables en aéreas biomédicas.

Polyethylene/waste tire dust (WTD) composites were obtained by an in situ polymerization technique. The surface of the WTD was modified with deposition of polyethylene by using plasma polymerization. Ethylene polymerization was carried out using bis(cyclopentadienyl) titanium dichloride (Cp2TiCl2) as homogeneous metallocene catalyst, while diethylaluminum chloride (DEAC), ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC) and methyl aluminoxane (MAO) were used as co-catalysts at two different [Al]/[Ti] molar ratio. The main characteristics of the obtained polyethylenes were determined by size exclusion chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results showed that by using EASC and MAO the highest catalytic activities were presented at a [Al]/[Ti] molar ratio of 9.17 and 18.33 respectively. Even though it was possible to obtain polyethylene using WTD (modified or unmodified) the catalytic activity was lower than in the case in which no WTD was added in ethylene polymerization. Scanning transmission electronic microscopy images evidenced that the original morphology of the polyethylenes was not modified by the presence of WTD.

Fueron obtenidos compositos de polietileno/residuo de polvo de llanta (WTD) mediante la técnica de polimerización in situ. La superficie del WTD fue modificada mediante polimerización por plasma de etileno. La polimerización de etileno se llevó a cabo utilizando un catalizador del tipo metaloceno dicloro-di-ciclopentadienil titanio (IV) (Cp2TiCl2), empleando diferentes co-catalizadores tales como cloruro de dietil aluminio (DEAC), sesquicloruro de etil aluminio (EASC) y metil aluminoxano (MAO). En las polimerizaciones de etileno se emplearon dos diferentes relaciones molares de [Al]/[Ti]. Las principales características de los polietilenos obtenidos fueron determinadas mediante cromatografía por exclusión por tamaños, análisis termogravimétrico, calorimetría diferencial de barrido, difracción de rayos X y microscopía electrónica de barrido. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el EASC y MAO presentan la mayor actividad catalítica a relaciones [Al]/[Ti] de 9.17 y 18.33, respectivamente. Aunque es posible polimerizar etileno en presencia de WTD y obtener los compositos, la presencia de WTD modificado y sin modificar disminuye la actividad catalítica. Por su parte, mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido se pudo evidenciar que la morfología de los polietilenos obtenidos no se modifica por la presencia del WTD.
