ABSTRACT This study describes lesions that occur in the stifle joints of dogs with patellar luxation. These lesions are associated with the animal’s age, body weight, and degree of luxation. The rate of redislocation was also evaluated. The patellar lesions found include articular cartilage erosion, subchondral bone exposure, a flattened or concave patellar surface, and enthesophytes. Extra-patellar lesions included synovitis, osteophytes, blunting of the trochlear groove, an absent trochlea, erosion of the condylar margins, capsule thickening, a long digital extensor tendon injury, cranial cruciate ligament rupture, and meniscal prolapse. Such lesions were frequently found in animals with Grade II or III luxation who were aged 24 months or more, and they were more severe in dogs weighing more than 15 kg. Patellar luxation causes changes that favor articular degeneration and should be treated surgically. Conservative treatment relieves pain, but does not address tissue alterations.

This study aimed to describe the association of Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. with ixodid tick cell lines by flow cytometry and fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Spirochetes were stained with a fluorescent membrane marker (PKH67 or PKH26), inoculated into 8 different tick cell lines and incubated at 30°C for 24 h. PKH efficiently stained B. burgdorferi without affecting bacterial viability or motility. Among the tick cell lines tested, the Rhipicephalus appendiculatus cell line RA243 achieved the highest percentage of association/internalization, with both high (90%) and low (10%) concentrations of BSK-H medium in tick cell culture medium. Treatment with cytochalasin D dramatically reduced the average percentage of cells with internalized spirochetes, which passed through a dramatic morphological change during their internalization by the host cell as observed in time-lapse photography. Almost all of the fluorescent bacteria were seen to be inside the tick cells. PKH labeling of borreliae proved to be a reliable and valuable tool to analyze the association of spirochetes with host cells by flow cytometry, confocal and fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The epidemiological profile, clinical signs, and surgical techniques used and the recovery of dogs presented for treatment of patellar luxation in the Veterinary Hospital of UFMG in the period from 2000 to 2010 were evaluated through a retrospective study. The clinical and surgical records of dogs and the data recorded for each animal were used. 342 joints in the records of 210 animals were studied. The congenital bilateral medial luxation was the most frequent occurrence and females were more affected. The age of the animals ranged from 32 days to 16 years, with higher incidence of luxation in animals under one year of age and body mass below 9.1kg. In 11.7% of the members had grade I luxation, 39.8% were grade II, 20.5% were grade III and 28% were grade IV. The frequency of preoperative claudicating was higher in dogs with luxation grades III and IV. Of the 342 joints, 218 underwent surgery. In the postoperative evaluation of animals, those with grade IV luxation showed higher claudicating frequency. The patellar luxation mainly affects females, and the bilateral congenital luxation is the most common occurrence, and young and small animals are more likely to have it. Functional recovery postoperative luxation in grade IV is slow and partial.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of herds and animals infected with equine influenza virus in Uruará County, Pará State, Brazil. Antibodies against equine influenza virus were detected by the haemagglutination inhibition test. Sample size was estimated from 2,069 holder farms that raised Equidae and did not vaccinate against equine influenza virus. A 90% confidence level was adopted with 15% precision and 50% estimated prevalence. The following prevalence of serum reactors animals were observed: 55.6% (45/81) (CI 49.8-61.3) A/Eq1/SP/56 (H7N7) and 76.5% (62/81) (CI 70.7-82.3) A/Eq2/SP/1/85 (H3N8). All the farms were positive for both subtypes of equine influenza virus. It is concluded that both subtypes of equine influenza virus were circulating among animals and on all farms in Uruará County, Pará State, Brazil, Eastern Amazon Region, in the year of 1998.

The term anthoma, meaning yellow tumor, was introduced by Frank Smith in 1869. Xanthogranuloma in adults is an unusual single-site, cutaneous tumor, with no visceral involvement and without spontaneous regress. Palpebral xanthomas account for 25% of all cases, most of which usually involve a solitary nodule. We present a 58-year-old man who was referred to our Plastic Surgery Service with large, yellowish, slow-growing, bilateral palpebral lesions. The histological diagnosis was xanthogranuloma. The palpebral defect was repaired using an island flap from the zygomatic area, described by Heywood in 1991 and modified from the original design. We describe adult xanthogranulomas, which are unusual lesions, and discuss the histological study and differential diagnosis. We also draw atention to the usefulness and versatility of the extended zygomatic flap as an excellent alternative for the repair of large lower palpebral cutaneous defects.
