The preparation and characterization of a novel pillar[5]arene based supramolecular system with mesalazine, a prescribed aminosalicylate drug was successfully achieved. Pyridinium-pillar[5]arene was efficiently prepared in three steps from hydroquinone bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ether derivative in high yield. It was demonstrated that the association between the compounds is pH dependent with an association constant of 3.4 × 103 L mol-1 near physiological conditions, leading to quenching of the fluorescence emission of mesalazine in the presence of the cationic macrocycle. Theoretical calculations indicate that the association between both molecules is of electrostatic nature. Formation of aggregates was also demonstrated in low concentrations of pillar[5]arene that is related to the non-linear behavior of the Stern-Volmer plot for quenching of mesalazine fluorescence emission.

ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of the present study is to translate, adapt, and cross-culturally validate the Brazilian Portuguese version of the questionnaire Hearing Protection Assessment Questionnaire (HPA). Methods The original instrument, developed in English, seeks to assess barriers and supports related to the use of hearing protection devices (HPD), as well as workers' knowledge, habits and attitudes towards occupational noise. The translation, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation of the questionnaire consisted of five steps: Translation of the questionnaire from English to Portuguese; 2) Reverse translation from Portuguese to English; 3) Analysis of the instrument by three experts in the field; 4) Pre-test of the questionnaire with ten workers; 5) Application of the instrument to 509 workers in a meatpacking industry after the pre-employment medical exam. Results The results indicate the construction and content validity of the Brazilian Portuguese version for use with a working population and its internal consistency. Conclusion This study resulted in the translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of the Hearing Protection Assessment Questionnaire (HPA), in order to be used to assess the use of individual hearing protection in the occupational field, called Hearing Protection Assessment Questionnaire (HPA).

RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi traduzir, adaptar e validar transculturalmente a versão para língua portuguesa brasileira do questionário Hearing Protection Assessment Questionnaire (HPA). Método O instrumento original, desenvolvido na língua inglesa, buscou avaliar as barreiras e suportes relacionados ao uso dos dispositivos de proteção auditiva (DPA), assim como o conhecimento, hábitos e atitudes dos trabalhadores frente ao ruído ocupacional. A tradução, adaptação e validação transcultural do questionário foi composta de cinco etapas: Tradução do questionário do inglês para o português; 2) Processo inverso de tradução do português para o inglês; 3) Análise do instrumento por três especialistas na área; 4) Pré-teste do questionário com 10 trabalhadores; 5) Aplicação do instrumento em 509 trabalhadores de uma indústria frigorífica após o exame admissional. Resultados os resultados indicam a validade de construção e conteúdo da versão em Português Brasileiro para o seu uso com uma população trabalhadora e a consistência interna do mesmo. Conclusão Este estudo resultou na tradução, na adaptação cultural e validação do questionário Hearing Protection Assessment Questionnaire (HPA) com a finalidade de ser usado para avaliar o uso de proteção auditiva individual em âmbito ocupacional, denominado Questionário de Avaliação da Proteção Auditiva (APA).

ABSTRACT Purpose: to implement and assess hearing health interventions for school students, using Dangerous Decibels® Program activities in partnership with the Young Doctor Project, approaching noise-induced hearing loss prevention. Methods: the study encompassed 41 students, aged 12 to 14 years, from two schools in inland São Paulo and a social institution for public school students. Activities were based on the Young Doctor Project and the Dangerous Decibels® Brazil Program. The students answered a questionnaire administered in three situations: before the intervention (pre), right after the intervention (post), and 4 months after the intervention. The ANOVA, Friedman (p < 0.001), and Tukey´s (p < 0.05) statistical tests were used. Results: the 41 students who participated in the program were protagonists of knowledge, spreading the content they learned to another 954 students in the three schools through cultural workshops. The analysis of program effectiveness revealed improved results right after the intervention and 4 months afterward. Conclusion: combining these two programs encouraged the protagonism of young people to increase their involvement with the community. Moreover, the students changed their attitude toward potentially dangerous sounds.

RESUMO Objetivo: implementar e avaliar intervenções em saúde auditiva para escolares, utilizando as atividades do Programa Dangerous Decibels ®, em parceria com o Projeto Jovem Doutor, abordando aspectos preventivos da perda auditiva induzida por níveis de pressão sonora elevados. Métodos: participaram do estudo 41 escolares, com idade entre 12 e 14 anos, de duas escolas no interior de São Paulo e uma Instituição Social direcionada a estudantes de escolas públicas. As atividades foram baseadas no Projeto Jovem Doutor e no programa Dangerous Decibels ® Brasil. Os escolares responderam a um questionário aplicado em três situações, antes da intervenção (pré), logo após a intervenção (pós) e quatro meses após a intervenção. Foram utilizados os testes estatísticos ANOVA, FRIEDMAN; p<0,001 e TUKEY; p<0,05. Resultados: os 41 escolares que participaram do programa atuaram como protagonistas do conhecimento, multiplicando o conteúdo aprendido através das oficinas culturais, envolvendo 954 escolares das três escolas. Ao analisar a eficácia do programa, observou-se melhora nos resultados logo após a intervenção e, também, após 4 meses. Conclusão: a união desses dois programas incentivou o protagonismo juvenil, objetivando o maior envolvimento dos estudantes junto da comunidade. Foi possível observar a mudança de atitude dos escolares frente aos sons potencialmente perigosos.

Abstract Objective To analyze emotional intelligence among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic and describe emotional attention, clarity and repair scores in managing emotions. Methods This is a quantitative, observational cross-sectional study, comprising 121 nursing students at the Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco. Data collection was performed using a self-administered form containing the Informed Consent Form, a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24, validated for use in Portuguese. Data were submitted to statistical treatment using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 20.0. Results There were no significant differences between gender, sociodemographic data, and graduation period with Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 scores. However, fourth and eighth semester students had significantly lower averages on this scale (p=0.015). Conclusion The need to address emotional intelligence throughout the nursing graduation was evidenced, in addition to reinforcing the psychological support of students, based on services already provided by the university.

Resumen Objetivo Analizar la inteligencia emocional de estudiantes de enfermería durante la pandemia de COVID-19 y describir los puntajes de atención emocional, claridad y reparación en la gestión de las emociones. Métodos Se trata de un estudio cuantitativo, observacional de diseño transversal, compuesto por 121 estudiantes de la carrera de Enfermería de la Universidad Federal do Vale do São Francisco. La recopilación de datos se realizó a través de un formulario autoaplicado que contenía el Consentimiento Informado, un cuestionario sociodemográfico y la escala Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24, validada para uso en idioma portugués. Los datos pasaron por tratamiento estadístico utilizando el programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, versión 20.0. Resultados No hubo diferencias significativas entre sexo, datos sociodemográficos y semestre de la carrera con el puntaje de la Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24. Sin embargo, los alumnos del cuarto y del octavo semestre presentaron promedios considerablemente inferiores en esta escala (p=0,015). Conclusión Se evidenció la necesidad de tratar la inteligencia emocional a lo largo de la carrera de enfermería, además de reforzar la contención psicológica de los estudiantes, a partir de servicios que la universidad ya ofrece.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar a inteligência emocional entre estudantes de enfermagem na pandemia de COVID-19 e descrever os escores de atenção emocional, clareza e reparação na gestão das emoções. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, observacional de delineamento transversal, composto por 121 estudantes do Curso de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de um formulário autoaplicável contendo Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido, questionário sociodemográfico e a escala Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24, validado para o uso em língua portuguesa. Os dados foram submetidos a tratamento estatístico utilizando-se o programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, versão 20.0. Resultados Não houve diferenças significativas entre sexo, dados sociodemográficos e período da graduação com a pontuação do Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24. Entretanto, os alunos do quarto e do oitavo semestre apresentaram significativamente menores médias desta escala (p=0,015). Conclusão Evidenciou-se a necessidade de abordar a inteligência emocional ao longo da graduação em enfermagem, além de reforçar o amparo psicológico dos estudantes, a partir de serviços já disponibilizados pela universidade.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the possible differences among the hearing of farmers and their families when compared to the population not exposed to pesticides. Methods Cross-sectional study with 70 smallholder family farmers (research group), with the mean age of 39.7 years, of both sexes and a mean of 23.7 years of exposure to pesticides. We included a control group with 71 participants of both sexes with the mean age of 39.5 years, not exposed to either noise or chemical substances, to compare the results. In stage 1, both groups were submitted to conventional and high-frequency audiometry, and acoustic immittance. In stage 2, only people with normal hearing were submitted to the evoked otoacoustic emissions and suppression effect on transient otoacoustic emissions. Results Significant differences were observed between the groups in the conventional pure-tone and in the high-frequency audiometry, as well as in the acoustic reflex. The most affected frequencies in the conventional pure-tone audiometry ranged from 3 to 6 kHz and, in the high-frequency audiometry, from 9000 to 11200 Hz. As for the transient otoacoustic emissions, the worse suppression effect results were found in the research group. Conclusion There were differences among the hearing of family farmers and the control group. The conventional auditory thresholds are related to the group, age and sex. Farming is associated with impairments in the basal region of the cochlea, absence of acoustic reflex, reduced signal-to-noise ratio of the transient otoacoustic emissions, and dysfunction in the olivocochlear efferents of the auditory system.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar as possíveis diferenças na audição de agricultores e suas famílias em comparação com população não exposta aos agrotóxicos. Método Estudo transversal, com 70 participantes (grupo pesquisa), com média de idade de 39,7 anos, de ambos os sexos, proprietários de pequenos estabelecimentos agrícolas vinculados a agricultura familiar e tempo de exposição médio aos agrotóxicos de 23,7 anos. Um grupo controle com 71 participantes de ambos os sexos, sem exposição a ruído e agentes químicos, com idade média de 39,5 anos, foi incluído para a comparação dos resultados. Na etapa 1, ambos os grupos foram submetidos a audiometria convencional e de altas frequências e imitanciometria. Na etapa 2, somente os normoouvintes foram submetidos as emissões otoacústicas evocadas e efeito de supressão das emissões otoacústicas transientes. Resultados Observou-se diferenças significativas entre os grupos para audiometria tonal convencional e de altas frequências, e no reflexo acústico. As frequências mais afetadas na audiometria tonal convencional foram 3 a 6kHz e na audiometria de altas frequências foram as frequências de 9.000 e 11.200 Hz. Nas emissões otoacusticas transientes, observou-se no efeito de supressão piores resultados no grupo de pesquisa. Conclusão Conclui-se que houve diferenças na audição dos agricultores familiares em comparação com o grupo controle. Os limiares auditivos convencionais estão relacionados em função do grupo, idade e gênero. O trabalho na agricultura está associado com o comprometimento na região basal da cóclea, à ausência de reflexo acústico, à redução da relação sinal/ruído das emissões otoacústicas transientes e à disfunção do sistema auditivo eferente olivococlear.

ABSTRACT COVID-19 is a viral infection that mainly affects the lower respiratory tract and with the affinity of the Spike protein to the Angiotensin 2 converter enzyme, inducing a prothrombotic state which may lead to compromising of the cardiovascular, central nervous, auditory, and vestibular systems. Viral infections knowingly affect vestibular and auditory systems. This study aimed to present the auditory and vestibular findings of a woman without otoneurological complaints, before the infection with SARS-CoV-2. This is a longitudinal case report, presenting the evolution of the otoneurological clinical picture accompanied by the results of a battery of tests. The results evidenced a unilateral, permanent, cochlear sensorineural hearing loss through altered otoacoustic emissions albeit with normal tonal thresholds, accompanied by peripheral vestibular hypofunction which worsened with time, without any other factor that could justify these findings. This study shows the importance of the complete protocol of tests performed over time for a better understanding of long-time implications of the SARS-CoV-2 infection.

RESUMO A COVID-19 é uma infecção viral que afeta, principalmente, a via respiratória inferior e, com a afinidade da proteína Spike com a Enzima Conversora de Angiotensina 2, gerando estado protrombótico, pode haver comprometimento dos sistemas cardiovasculares, nervoso central e renal. As infecções virais são capazes, também, de causar alterações nos sistemas auditivo e vestibular. O presente estudo teve por finalidade apresentar os achados auditivos e vestibulares de uma mulher sem queixas otoneurológicas, previamente à infecção pela SARS-CoV-2. Trata-se de um relato de caso longitudinal, com apresentação da evolução do quadro clínico otoneurológico acompanhado de uma bateria de exames. Os resultados evidenciaram o aparecimento de uma perda auditiva neurossensorial unilateral prevista por emissões otoacústicas alteradas na presença limiares tonais normais. Com a sequência de exames, observou-se piora dos limiares auditivos e alteração da função vestibular, de maneira permanente, sem qualquer outro histórico que pudesse justificar a instalação do quadro. Em quadros infecciosos faz-se importante a longitudinalidade de avaliação com uso de protocolo completo de exames para melhor compreensão dos efeitos tardios.

ABSTRACT Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti is an important vector of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika virus. It is well known that resistance monitoring and genetic diversity data help designing the vector control programs. This study aimed to evaluate resistance to pyrethroids (PYs) through the frequency of kdr mutations Val1016IIe and F1534C, and the genetic variation of the mitochondrial gene ND4 in six natural populations of A. aegypti from Paraná - Brazil. Adults were obtained from eggs collected from Alvorada do Sul, Marilena, Maringá, Nova Londrina, Paranavaí and São Carlos do Ivaí. From these adults, 345 were used to identify the 1016 and 1534 sites, and 120 were used to perform the ND4 gene analysis. The studied populations from Paraná showed PYs resistance, low gene flow and genetic diversity. Additionally, a relationship was observed among the haplotypes of populations from the Amazon and Southeastern Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and North America.

Evaluability Assessment with an exploratory and qualitative approach. A literature review, documents and interviews with stakeholders were carried out, the results of which guided the modeling of hospital care during childbirth. The evaluative model was submitted to consensus using the Delphi Method together with specialists in the area and strategies were defined for the development of an evaluative study. Childbirth care must observe humanized care, scientific evidence and rights. Structural and organizational conditions and the development of actions must ensure access, quality and satisfaction for women. The evaluation must contemplate the perspective of the different actors involved in the process. It was concluded that hospital care during childbirth is assessable and the Evaluability Assessment contributed to delimiting the scope of the evaluation and expanding knowledge about the object; for the definition of the methodological strategies and instruments of collection of the evaluation study to be developed in the sequence. The evaluative model can be used in other contexts, with adaptation according to each reality.

Abstract Introduction: The nose and throat are areas of high viral load, which could place otolaryngologists at an even higher risk for COVID-19 than other health-care workers. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in otorhinolaryngologists in southern Brazil, its relationship to demographic data, professional practice and reported symptoms of COVID-19, and compare it with official data on other health-care workers of the state and the general population in the same period. Methods: In this cross-sectional multicenter study, otolaryngologists actively practicing officially registered in Rio Grande do Sul were screened for IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 from August 1 to September 15, 2020. A questionnaire was also applied. Results: We screened 358 (80.1%) of 447 actively practicing otolaryngologists (195 [54.5%] male; mean [SD] age, 47.77 [13.57] years; range, 26-84 years). Twenty-three were positive for IgM and/or IgG (6.4%). This result was significantly associated with reports of infected household contacts (19/315 negatives and 8/23 positives; p<0.001). From 23 seropositive participants, 14 were asymptomatic (60.9%; p< 0.001). There were no significant associations between seroconversion and age, sex, number of patient appointments and surgical procedures, workplace (hospital or private practice), patients with or without respiratory symptoms, or level of personal protective equipment used. The rate of COVID-19 in all health-care workers in the state was 7.69% at the end of the same period. Data from state government seroprevalence was 5.26 (risk ratio [RR]; 95% CI 3.27–8.45) and 4.66 (RR; 95% CI 2.93–7.43) times higher in otolaryngologists than in the general population in August and September, respectively. Conclusion: Otolaryngologists had a higher seroconversion rate than the general population. Using personal protective equipment, the level of occupational exposure did not result in higher rates of infection than other health-care workers, but the presence of infected household contacts was associated with higher rates of seroconversion.

RESUMO Este artigo discute a autenticidade do princípio de auto-organização e dos planos individuais de trabalho na perspectiva da pedagogia Freinet. Em razão da inatividade dos alunos, quando inseridos em contextos tradicionais de ensino, o plano individual de trabalho pode mudar a relação deles com o conhecimento e com o desejo de aprender e de investigar o mundo. Na perspectiva da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, apresentamos alguns aportes teóricos e práticos tratados por Freinet acerca do desenvolvimento da auto-organização da criança e problematizamos três modelos de planos individuais de trabalho – um deles utilizado pelo próprio Freinet e outros dois atuais, um aberto e um fechado, construídos por professores franceses. Nossas conclusões consideram o plano individual de trabalho uma ferramenta que proporciona a auto-organização dos alunos e de elevada importância na pedagogia Freinet para a construção de respostas efetivas que visem à educação libertadora.

ABSTRACT This article discusses the authenticity of the principle of self-organization and individual work plans, due to students’ inactivity, when inserted in traditional teaching contexts, in their relationship with knowledge and with the desire to learn and investigate the world. In the perspective of bibliographic and documentary research, we present some theoretical and practical contributions treated by Freinet about the development of the child’s self-organization and problematize three models of individual work plans: one of them used by Freinet himself, and other two current, one open and the other one closed, built by French teachers. Our conclusions consider the individual work plan is a tool that provides students with self-organization and of high importance in Freinet Pedagogy for the construction of effective responses aimed at a libertarian education.

Resumo Edificações assistenciais de saúde são complexas pois abrangem ocupantes em diferentes condições de saúde. Nesse contexto, as avaliações de desempenho de edifícios podem ajudar a alcançar um melhor desempenho percebido pelos ocupantes. Assim, o presente trabalho desenvolveu uma revisão sistemática da literatura (RSL) sobre avaliações de desempenho em edificações assistenciais de saúde (EAS), visando compreender suas características intrínsecas e desenvolver visão geral do assunto. O objetivo foi identificar a finalidade das avaliações, critérios avaliados, métodos de avaliação, tipo de EAS avaliados, distribuição temporal e espacial das publicações. A pesquisa foi conduzida em três bancos de dados eletrônicos, e 83 artigos foram examinados com a ferramenta 5W1H. Como resultado, os edifícios avaliados englobaram serviços de saúde cobrindo todas as fases da vida, questões físicas e mentais. Foram identificados seis grupos de critérios, destacando-se: conforto espacial, luminoso e acústico, questões energéticas, materiais e acabamentos utilizados. Ademais, foram estabelecidas relações entre os tipos de edificações, critérios avaliados e ferramentas utilizadas. Finalmente, a RSL colaborou com o entendimento do desempenho em EAS, identificou que os EAS estão sendo avaliados, contribuindo com a saúde, bem-estar e satisfação dos ocupantes visto que edifícios com melhor desempenho tendem a ser melhores locais de cura e trabalho.

Abstract Healthcare buildings are complex as their occupants may have different health conditions. In this context, building performance evaluations can help to achieve better performance perceived by occupants. Thus, this paper has developed a systematic literature review (SLR) on performance evaluation in healthcare buildings to understand their intrinsic characteristics, in addition to developing an overview of the subject. The objective was to identify the purpose of the evaluations, the criteria evaluated, the evaluation methods, the type of healthcare facilities evaluated, as well as the temporal and spatial distribution of papers. The research was conducted using three electronic databases, and eighty-three papers were examined according to the 5W1H tool. As a result, the buildings assessed covered health services at all stages of life, physical and mental issues. Six groups of criteria were identified, highlighting: spatial, lighting, acoustic comfort, energy issues, and the materials and finishes used. Moreover, relationships were established between the types of buildings, evaluated criteria, and tools used. Finally, the SLR collaborated with the understanding of performance in healthcare buildings, identified that these buildings are being evaluated, contributing to the health, well-being, and satisfaction of occupants as buildings that perform better tend to be better places of healing and work.

Resumo A trombose de veia porta (TVP) é uma doença na qual ocorre trombose desde os ramos intra-hepáticos da veia porta, podendo se estender até a veia esplênica e/ou veia mesentérica superior, estando associada, na maioria das vezes, à cirrose hepática. A TVP não associada a cirrose é rara. O objetivo deste artigo foi relatar dois casos de TVP não associados à cirrose, que foram tratados com anticoagulação e tiveram evolução clínica satisfatória.

Abstract Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a disease in which thrombosis occurs from the intrahepatic branches of the portal vein, and may extend to the splenic vein and/or superior mesenteric vein. It is most often associated with liver cirrhosis. PVT not associated with cirrhosis is rare. The aim of this article is to report two cases of PVT in which it was not associated with cirrhosis. Both were treated with anticoagulation and clinical progress afterwards was good.

Abstract: This paper evaluates the physicochemical and biological properties of experimental resin-based dual-cured calcium aluminate (CA) and calcium titanate (CTi) materials for vital pulp therapy (VPT). The experimental dual-cured materials were obtained as two pastes: a) Bis-EMA 10, PEG 400, DHEPT, EDAB, camphorquinone, and butylated hydroxytoluene; and b) fluoride ytterbium, Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, benzoyl peroxide, and butylated hydroxytoluene. The materials were divided into six groups based on the added calcium component: MTA (MTA®, Angelus); CLQ (Clinker-Fillapex®, Angelus); CA (calcined at ,1200°C in pastes a and b); CA800 (calcined at 800°C in paste a); CA1200 (calcined at 1,200°C in paste a); and CTi (paste a). The real-time degree of conversion and rate of polymerization (n = 3), diametral tensile strength (n = 10), hydrogen potential (n = 15), calcium ion release (n = 10), water sorption and solubility (n = 10), and cell viability (n = 6) were evaluated. One- and two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test were used in the analysis of the parametric data, and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s multiple tests were used to analyze the nonparametric data (α = 0.05). CLQ, CA800 and CA1200 had the highest diametral tensile strength. The water solubility of MTA was similar to that of CA800, CA1200 and CTi. CA800 and CA1200 resulted in cell viabilities similar to those of MTA and CLQ. The experimental dual-cured CA-based material that calcined at 800°C showed physicochemical and biological properties suitable for VPT, and similar to those of MTA.

RESUMO A região Nordeste brasileira apresenta condições climáticas favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da floricultura; contudo, a escassez hídrica e a salinização de parte de suas fontes hídricas atuam como entrave a essa atividade. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se testar os efeitos de níveis crescentes de salinidade da água de irrigação sobre as respostas quantitativas e qualitativas das espécies ornamentais Euphorbia milii e Zamioculcas zamiifolia, sob diferentes condições de luminosidade. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com cinco repetições. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 7 L, passando por um período inicial de aclimatação durante 15 dias com água não salina para que o seu estabelecimento não fosse comprometido; após esse período, as plantas foram submetidas a níveis crescentes de salinidade na água de irrigação (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; e 5,0 dS m-1) sob quatro intensidades luminosas (pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento), durante 60 dias. As variáveis analisadas foram altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, biomassa da parte subterrânea e das partes aéreas, tolerância à salinidade e análise qualitativa. O sombreamento teve maior impacto nas variáveis qualitativas das plantas do que na tolerância à salinidade baseada em variáveis quantitativas. O ambiente com 30% de sombreamento é o mais propício para o cultivo da E. milii quando se utiliza água de baixa a moderada salinidade. O sombreamento reduz os danos diretos da radiação nas folhas de Z. zamiifolia e melhora a qualidade visual dessa espécie sob elevada salinidade.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Northeast region has favorable climatic conditions for the development of floriculture; however, water scarcity and salinization of part of its water sources act as an obstacle to this activity. In this context, the objective was to test the effects of increasing levels of salinity in irrigation water on the quantitative and qualitative responses of ornamental species Euphorbia milii and Zamioculcas zamiifolia, under different light conditions. The study was carried out using an experimental design in randomized blocks, in a split-split-plot scheme, with five replications. The plants were grown in 7 L pots, undergoing an initial period of acclimatization for 15 days with non-saline water so that their establishment would not be compromised; after this period, the plants were subjected to increasing levels of salinity in the irrigation water (0.5; 2.0; 3.5; and 5.0 dS m-1) under four light intensities (full sun, 30%, 50% and 70% shading) for 60 days. The variables analyzed were plant height, stem diameter, belowground and shoot biomass, salinity tolerance and qualitative analysis. Shading had a greater impact on the qualitative variables of the plants than on the salinity tolerance based on quantitative variables. The environment with 30% shading is the most favorable for the cultivation of E. milii when using water with low to moderate salinity. Shading reduces direct radiation damage to Z. zamiifolia leaves and improves the visual quality of this species under high salinity.
