Abstract Objective: We address the hypothesis that the extraordinary sandstorm occurred on 22-24 February 2020 might have a role in the different cumulated incidence of COVID-19 cases between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, since it obliged to reduce significantly air traffic and forced to suspend all major carnival street events in all most locations. Method: We performed a retrospective analysis of COVID-19 cases as to 1 April 2020 according to symptoms onset, weather-related data and Carnival events in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Results: The sandstorm occurred on February 22-24, 2020, forced air traffic to close, reducing the influx of tourists to the Canary Islands and suspending carnival events in most places, except in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Cumulated incidence as to 1 April was 132.81/100,000 in Tenerife, and 56.04/100,000 in Gran Canaria. Conclusions: The suspension of Carnival events due to the sandstorm in the Canary Islands contributed to reduce differently the SARS-CoV-2 spread in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Resumen Objetivo: Investigar la hipótesis de que la extraordinaria tormenta de arena ocurrida el 22-24 de febrero de 2020 pudo tener un papel en la diferente incidencia acumulada de casos de COVID-19 entre las islas de Tenerife y Gran Canaria, en cuanto conllevó una reducción significativa del tráfico aéreo y la cancelación de las mayores celebraciones del carnaval en muchas poblaciones. Método: Se realiza un análisis retrospectivo de los casos de COVID-19 hasta el 1 abril de 2020 según fecha de inicio de los síntomas, de los datos climáticos y de las celebraciones de carnaval en Tenerife y Gran Canaria. Resultados: La tormenta de arena ocurrida el 22-24 de febrero de 2020 obligó a cerrar el tráfico aéreo, reduciendo la llegada de turistas a Canarias, y a suspender las celebraciones de los carnavales en muchas poblaciones, excepto en Santa Cruz de Tenerife. El 1 abril de 2020, la incidencia acumulada de casos era de 132,81/100.000 en Tenerife y de 56,04/100.000 en Gran Canaria. Conclusiones: La cancelación de las celebraciones de carnaval debido a la tempestad de arena en las Islas Canarias parece que contribuyó de manera diferente a la reducción de la incidencia del SARS-CoV-2 en Tenerife y Gran Canaria.

Multidisciplinary experts in the areas of nutrition and health met in Chinchón, Madrid, on November 25-26, 2013 under the auspices of the Fundación para la Investigación Nutricional (Nutrition Research Foundation) and with the collaboration of the Madrid Regional Government´s Health Ministry, the International Sweeteners Association and the Carlos III Health Institute CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition. They analyzed the current status of scientific knowledge on low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) and developed a consensus Decalogue on their use; this constitutes the Chinchón Declaration. Sweeteners, including sugar, represent a subject of undeniable interest and are currently a popular topic, although areas relating to their safety and benefits remain unknown to segments of academia and the general public. The nature of LNCS makes them vulnerable to biased and even contradictory information. They are food additives that are broadly used as sugar substitutes to sweeten foods, medicines and food supplements when non-nutritional or non-caloric alternatives are needed. The Chinchón Decalogue is the outcome of a meeting for reflection and consensus by a group of experts with backgrounds in different scientific disciplines (toxicology, clinical nutrition, community nutrition, physiology, food science, public health, pediatrics, endocrinology and nutrition, nursing, pharmaceutical care and food legislation). The Decalogue includes different aspects of LNCS related to regulation, use, benefits and safety. In general, benefits of LNCS have been traditionally neglected in comparison with the tendency for emphasising unexisting or unproven possible risks. The need to strengthen research on LNCS in Spain was emphasized, as well as the need to educate both professionals and the public.

Expertos de carácter multidisciplinar de las áreas de conocimiento de la nutrición y la salud reunidos en Chinchón, Madrid, los días 25 y 26 de noviembre de 2013 , bajo los auspicios de la Fundación para la Investigación Nutricional y con la colaboración de la Consejería de Sanidad del Gobierno de la Comunidad de Madrid, la International Sweeteners Association y el CIBER de Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y la Nutrición del Instituto de Salud Carlos III, analizaron el estado actual del conocimiento científico en torno a los Edulcorantes sin y bajos en calorías (ESBC) y desarrollaron un Decálogo sobre su uso que constituye la Declaración de Chinchón. Los edulcorantes, incluido el azúcar, constituyen un elemento de indudable interés y actualidad, aunque no exento de desconocimiento por algunos sectores tanto académicos como de la población en general. La propia naturaleza de los ESBC los hace susceptibles de informaciones tergiversadas e incluso contradictorias. Son aditivos alimentarios ampliamente utilizados como sustitutivos del azúcar para endulzar alimentos, medicamentos y complementos alimenticios cuando se persiguen fines no nutritivos. El Decálogo de Chinchón es fruto de una reunión de reflexión y consenso por parte de un grupo de expertos procedentes de distintas disciplinas científicas (toxicología, nutrición clínica, nutrición comunitaria, fisiología, bromatología, salud pública, atención primaria, pediatría, endocrinología y nutrición, enfermería, atención farmacéutica y legislación alimentaria). El decálogo incluye diferentes aspectos de los EBSC relacionados con la legislación, uso, beneficios y seguridad. En general, los beneficios de los EBSC han sido tradicionalmente desatendidos en comparación con la tendencia de destacar posibles riesgos inexistentes o que no han sido probados. Hace especial hincapié en la necesidad de fortalecer la investigación de los EBSC en España, así como la necesidad de formar en este ámbito a los profesionales y a los consumidores en general.

Objectives: To assess the variability in the number of cigarettes smoked per person per day in Spain according to the information source (health surveys versus legal sales). Methods: We compared cigarette consumption per person per day (population aged >16 years) obtained from the national health surveys in Spain and the official data on legal tobacco sales between 1993 and 2009. Results: Cigarette consumption per person per day decreased between 1993 and 2009. Over the entire period, the number of cigarettes smoked per person per day according to legal sales exceeded that reported by national health surveys (up to 46.9%). Conclusion: The difference in data on the number of cigarettes smoked between national health surveys and legal sales has increased in the last few years in Spain.

Objetivos: Analizar la variabilidad en el número de cigarrillos fumados por persona y día en España según la fuente de información (encuestas de salud y datos de ventas). Métodos: Se comparó el consumo de cigarrillos diarios por persona y día (población >16 años de edad) obtenido de las encuestas nacionales de salud y de los datos sobre ventas de tabaco del Comisionado para el Mercado de Tabacos entre 1993 y 2009. Resultados: El consumo de cigarrillos diarios por persona y día disminuyó entre 1993 y 2009. En todo el periodo, el número de cigarrillos fumados por persona y día según las ventas excedieron a los derivados de las encuestas de salud (hasta un 46,9%). Conclusión: La diferencia entre el número de cigarrillos fumados obtenidos entre las ventas y las encuestas de salud ha aumentado en los últimos años.

Objective: To address the issue of infant mortality as an important health indicator, we systematically analyzed trends in infant mortality in five central and eastern European (CEE) countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia). Methods: Infant mortality rates (per 1,000 live births) and trends were computed using the World Health Organization database, as well as selected European databases. Results: In 1990, mortality rates in most CEE countries were appreciably higher than the mean European Union value of 9.2/1,000 (up to 14.8/1,000 in Hungary and 19.4/1,000 in Poland). However, between 1990 and 2001, infant mortality decreased substantially in all CEE countries, and in 2001 the rates in the Czech Republic (4.0/1,000) and Slovenia (4.3/1,000) were lower than the EU average of 4.6/1,000. Discussion: Infant mortality is an important indicator of the improvements in health observed in CEE countries over the last decade.

Objetivo: Para estudiar la aplicación específica de la mortalidad infantil como indicador relevante de la salud, hemos considerado sistemáticamente las tendencias en la mortalidad infantil en 5 países de Europa central y del este (República Checa, Hungría, Polonia, Eslovaquia y Eslovenia). Métodos: Hemos calculado las tasas de mortalidad infantil (por 1.000 nacidos vivos) y las tendencias a partir de la base de datos de mortalidad de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, así como otras bases de datos europeas y nacionales seleccionadas. Resultados: En 1990, la mayoría de los países de Europa central y del este tenían tasas apreciablemente mayores que el valor medio de la Unión Europea de 9,2/1.000, hasta 14,8/1.000 en Hungría y 19,4/1.000 en Polonia. Sin embargo, entre 1990 y 2001, la mortalidad infantil disminuyó sustancialmente en todos los países de Europa central y del este, y en 2001 las tasas en la República Checa (4,0/1.000) y Eslovenia (4,3/1.000) fueron menores que la media de la Unión Europea (4,6/1.000). Discusión: La mortalidad infantil es un indicador relevante de los cambios favorables de la salud observados en países de Europa central y del este durante la década pasada.

OBJETIVE: A population-based survey was conducted to know the attitudes towards new Italian smoke-free regulations and its impact on tobacco consumption. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We considered 3 114 subjects aged 15 or over, representative of the general adult Italian population. RESULTS: Once smoke-free policies were introduced, support for them tended to increase. Smoke-free policies accounted for 8% decrease in cigarette consumption in the short run. Tobacco bans were almost universally accepted, and do not seem to unfavourably affect the business of restaurants or cafes. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study, show the advantages of smoke-free legislations, which may have major public health implications.

OBJETIVO: Se realizó un estudio poblacional para conocer las actitudes relacionadas con la Nueva Ley Italiana Antitabaco y el efecto sobre el consumo. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se analizó una muestra de 3 114 individuos mayores de 15 años representativos de la población general adulta italiana. RESULTADOS: Tras la entrada en vigor de las políticas antitabaquismo, el apoyo a ellas aumentó y además contribuyeron con 8% al descenso del consumo de cigarrillos en el corto plazo. Las prohibiciones antitabaco se aceptaron casi de modo unánime y al parecer no afectaron de manera desfavorable a restaurantes y cafeterías. CONCLUSIONES: Los resultados muestran las ventajas de esta nueva legislación, que puede tener importantes implicaciones en la salud pública.
