Dengue fever and schistosomiasis are major public health issues for which vector control using larvicide and molluscicide substances present in plants provides a promising strategy. This study evaluated the potential toxicity of the extract of hydroethanol Schinopsis brasiliensis Engl., Anacardiaceae, stem bark and its chloroform, hexane, ethyl acetate, and hydromethanol fractions against Artemia salina and Aedes Aegypti larvae and snails Biomphalaria glabrata. All of the assays were performed in triplicate and the mean mortality rates were used to determine the LC50and LC90 values using the probit method. The hydroethanol hydromethanol extract and fraction were free of toxicity towards A. salina(LC50 > 1000 µg/ml), while chloroform fraction was moderately toxic (LC50313 µg/ml); ethyl acetate and hexane fractions displayed low toxicity, with LC50 557 and 582 µg/ml, respectively. Chloroform, hexane, and ethyl acetate fractions showed larvicidal potential towards A. aegypti (LC50 values of 345, 527 and 583 µg/ml, respectively), while chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions were highly toxic to B. glabrata (LC90values of 68 and 73 µg/ml, respectively). Based on these findings, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and hexane fractions should be further investigated for their potential use against the vectors of dengue and schistosomiasis.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar em sete genótipos de soja, os tipos de resistência à mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci Genn. biótipo B, bem como a correlação entre a densidade dos tricomas presentes nos folíolos dos genótipos estudados e a preferência de oviposição da espécie. Os ensaios foram conduzidos na área experimental e no Laboratório de Resistência de Plantas a Insetos do Departamento de Fitossanidade, da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - Campus de Jaboticabal - UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, entre outubro de 2000 e janeiro de 2001. Dentre os genótipos testados, BR-82 12547 e PI 229358 apresentaram resistência do tipo nãopreferência para oviposição à mosca branca; a oviposição foi correlacionada positivamente com a densidade total de tricomas. Assim, PI 227687, com a maior quantidade de tricomas, foi o genótipo mais ovipositado, enquanto que BR-82 12547 e PI 229358, com as menores quantidades de tricomas, foram os menos ovipositados. O ensaio de antibiose foi realizado utilizando-se cinco genótipos: BR-82 12547, IAC 100, IAC 78-2318, PI 229358 e PI 227687, selecionados do ensaio de não-preferência para oviposição. IAC 100 destacou-se por afetar negativamente B. tabaci biótipo B, prolongando o período ninfal (12,8 dias) e reduzindo a emergência de adultos (80,0%).

Trials were carried out with seven soybean genotypes, to evaluate the resistance to Bemisia tabaci Genn. biotype B, between October 2000 and January 2001, at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - UNESP Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. Oviposition non-preference (free choice and no-choice tests) and antibiosis were evaluated as well as the correlation between the density of the trichomes present in the genotypes' leaflets and oviposition preference. Among the genotypes tested, BR-82 12547 and PI 229358 showed non-preference type resistance to oviposition of the silverleaf whitefly, and oviposition was positively correlated with the total density of trichomes. Thus, PI 227687 with the biggest quantity of trichomes was the most oviposited genotype, whereas BR-82 12547 and PI 229358 with the smallest quantities of trichomes were the least oviposited genotypes. The antibiosis test was accomplished with five genotypes: BR-82 12547, IAC 100, IAC 78-2318, PI 229358 and PI 227687, selected from the oviposition non-preference test. IAC 100 affected negatively B. tabaci biotype B, by prolonging the ninfal period (12,8 days) and the reducing adults' emergence (80,0%).

Dez genótipos de soja: IAC 100, IAC 74-2832, IAC 90-2971, IAC 78-2318, PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454, BR-82 12547, MG/BRS-68 (Vencedora) e FT-5 (Formosa), foram avaliados quanto a resistência, do tipo não-preferência para oviposição, à mosca-branca, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B. O ensaio foi realizado no campo experimental da FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, de outubro de 1999 a janeiro de 2000. Pretendeu-se, ainda, verificar a preferência de oviposição da referida espécie em relação às folhas unifolioladas e trifolioladas, e quanto à posição do folíolo na folha trifoliolada, e estabelecer o número mínimo de folíolos necessários para amostrar adequadamente a oviposição da mosca branca. Constatou-se que a oviposição foi menor nos genótipos BR-82 12547 e IAC 74-2832 em todas as avaliações (15, 30, 45, 65 e 85 dias após a emergência das plantas). As maiores taxas de oviposição ocorreram em IAC 90-2971, IAC 100, PI 227687 e PI 274454. O número médio de ovos depositados por seção de folha pelas fêmeas de B. tabaci biótipo B nas folhas trifolioladas não diferiu significativamente dos obtidos nas unifolioladas, 15 dias após a emergência das plantas (estádios de desenvolvimento entre V3 e V5), em 70% dos genótipos. Quanto à posição dos folíolos, a mosca-branca ovipositou indistintamente sobre os folíolos mediano e laterais. Também o número médio de ovos depositados por área foliar, pela mosca-branca, nos três folíolos da folha trifoliolada não diferiu significativamente da média obtida para dois ou um folíolo desta, o que sugere ser, um folíolo, uma unidade amostral representativa da oviposição de B. tabaci biótipo B em soja.

Ten soybean genotypes: IAC 100, IAC 74-2832, IAC 90-2971, IAC 78-2318, PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454, BR-82 12547, MG/BRS-68 (Vencedora) and FT-5 (Formosa) were evaluated for resistance to Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype, in order to identify oviposition non preference by the insect. The experiment was held in the field, at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, from October 1999 to January 2000. The oviposition preference of the whitefly between unifoliolate and trifoliolate leaves and the preference in relation to the position of the leaflets in the trifoliolate leaves were also determined; also the minimum number of leaflets necessary to evaluate oviposition was established. Oviposition was lower on the genotypes BR-82 12547 and IAC 74-2832 throughout the sampling period (15, 30, 45, 65, and 85 days after the emergence). Higher oviposition rates were observed in IAC 90-2971, IAC 100, PI 227687 and PI 274454. The density of eggs deposited by B. tabaci B biotype on the surface of the trifoliolate leaves was similar to that obtained on the unifoliolate ones, 15 days after emergence of the plants (stage of development between V3 and V4), in 70% of the genotypes. Also, the oviposition of silverleaf whitefly on the medium and lateral leaflets was similar. Finally, the density of eggs laid on the three leaflets of the trifoliolate leaves were not significantly different from the density obtained on two or only one, suggesting that a single leaflet could be a representative sampling unit for oviposition studies of the B. tabaci B biotype in soybean.
