ABSTRACT A 51-year-old non-obese woman presented with a one-week history of progressive blurry vision within the inferior visual field of her left eye. Her only relevant past medical history was long-standing hypothyroidism and recent vaccination against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with an mRNA vaccine 12 days before the onset of symptoms. At examination, the anterior segment was unremarkable, but the retinal fundus revealed a central retinal vein occlusion associated with a branch retinal artery occlusion of the superior temporal branch in her left eye. Ancillary tests to rule out thrombophilia, hyperviscosity, hypercoagulability, or inflammation were negative. Ultrasound tests were also negative for a cardiac or carotid origin of the branch retinal artery occlusion. At two-month follow-up, no new retinal vascular occlusive events were observed. Although the best-corrected visual acuity at presentation was 8/10 in the left eye, the final best-corrected visual acuity remained 3/10.

RESUMO Uma mulher de 51 anos, não obesa, apresentou história de uma semana de visão embaçada progressiva no campo visual inferior do olho esquerdo. Seu único histórico médico anterior relevante era hipotireoidismo de longa data e uma recente vacinação contra a Doença de Coronavírus 2019 (COVID-19), com vacina de mRNA, 12 dias antes do início dos sintomas. O exame mostrou segmento anterior normal, mas o fundo da retina revelou uma oclusão da veia central da retina associada a uma oclusão de ramo arterial da retina do ramo temporal superior no olho esquerdo. Testes auxiliares para descartar trombofilia, hiperviscosidade, hipercoagulabilidade ou inflamação apresentaram resultados negativos. Testes de ultrassom também foram negativos quanto a uma origem cardíaca ou da carótida da oclusão do ramo da artéria da retina. Após dois meses de acompanhamento, nenhum novo evento vascular oclusivo retiniano foi observado. Embora, a acuidade visual melhor corrigida na apresentação tenha sido de 8/10 no olho esquerdo, a acuidade visual final melhor corrigida permaneceu em 3/10.

Summary: The cultivation of blue agave has economic importance in the state of Jalisco as it generates employment, being the main economic source in several municipalities such as Tonaya and Tuxcacuesco. However, at present, the edaphological status of the soils is unknown and there is limited knowledge on the factors that regulate crop growth, which limits the determination of optimal crop yields. In this sense, the aim of our research was to evaluate the state of fertility of the soils cultivated with blue agave in plots with dif ferent characteristics (virgin and with several planting cycles), as well as to diagnose their status in the Tonaya and Tuxcacuesco municipalities in order to suggest more ef ficient management and nutrition practices. Af ter analyses in the laboratory, the results show that the soils presented a mean pH value of 7.7, the mean concentration of organic matter was 2.19%. Overall deficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were found, thus, the soils were classified in the low-to-poor category in terms of nutritional content. Moreover, there were no significant dif ferences between the plots evaluated, organic matter content and nutrients. We recommend the use of organic fertilizers and bean/corn/agave polyculture when agricultural and economic resources are suf ficient.

Resumen: El cultivo del agave azul es de importancia económica en el estado de Jalisco, genera gran cantidad de empleos y es la principal fuente económica de varios municipios como es el caso de Tonaya y Tuxcacuesco. No obstante, en la actualidad se desconoce el estado edafológico de los suelos, se exhibe un limitado conocimiento de los factores que regulan el crecimiento del cultivo, lo que propicia que los rendimientos en el cultivo no se consideren óptimos. En este sentido, el objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el estado de la fertilidad de los suelos cultivados con agave azul en parcelas con distintas características (vírgenes y con varios ciclos de siembra) y diagnosticar su estado, en los municipios de Tonaya y Tuxcacuesco, con el fin de proponer prácticas de manejo y nutrición eficientes. Se analizaron los suelos en laboratorio, encontrándose las siguientes características; los resultados obtenidos evidencian que en promedio los suelos presentaron valores de pH de 7.7, la concentración de materia orgánica con promedio de 2.19%, en la mayoría de los sitios se encontraron deficiencias de nitrógeno, fósforo y potasio, clasificando a los suelos en la categoría de bajos a pobres en cuanto al contenido nutricional. Con base en los análisis estadísticos se demostró que no existen diferencias significativas entre los tipos de parcelas evaluadas, su contenido de materia orgánica y nutrientes. En cuanto a las prácticas de manejo se recomienda utilizar abonos orgánicos y el sistema de policultivo frijol, maíz y agave cuando el contexto agrícola y económico lo permitan.

Summary: In the state of Guerrero, maize (Zea mays) is planted in different soil and climatic conditions, at altitudes ranging from sea level to 2880 altitude meters, mainly in a rainfed regime and by producers who use native and improved maize. The objective is to evaluate the effect of fertilization with nitrogen and phosphorus in combination with silicon on the yield of corn crop components under the hypothesis that at least one fertilization formula and silicon application to the soil generate an positive effect on the size of the corn ear and grain yield. Fertilization consideres two factors; first the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (N-P-K) formula with two levels (90-60-00 and 60-40-00); the second was silicon (Si) with three levels (without Si, Fermiphos and Silifosca®), whose combination originated six treatments; which were distributed in a randomized block experimental design with three repetitions. N-P-K fertilization did not statistically affect the variables evaluated, except for diameter, which was statistically different and increased by 2% with 90-60-00. The application of silicon (Fermiphos and Silifosca®) increased cob more than 12% in length and 6% in diameter and grain yield 24%. Fertilization with 90-60-00 + silicon (Fermiphos and Silifosca®) increased size and yield from 8 to 32%; while fertilization with 60-40-00 + silicon (Fermiphos and Silifosca®) exceeded the evaluated parameters from 4 to 28%. Increasing the fertilization formula had minimal and inconsistent impacts on ear size. However, the application of Silifosca® or Fermiphos combined with N-P-K fertilization favored positive changes in ear size and grain yield with 90-60-00 and the addition of Silifosca®.

Resumen: En el estado de Guerrero, el maíz (Zea mays) se siembra en diferentes condiciones edáficas y climáticas, en altitudes que van desde el nivel del mar hasta los 2880 m de altitud, principalmente en régimen de temporal y por productores que utilizan maíces nativos y mejorados. El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de la fertilización con nitrógeno y fósforo en combinación con silicio en los componentes de rendimiento del cultivo de maíz; bajo la hipótesis de que al menos una fórmula de fertilización y la aplicación de silicio al suelo generan un efecto positivo en el tamaño de la mazorca y el rendimiento de grano de maíz. La fertilización consideró dos factores; primero la fórmula de Nitrógeno, Fosforo y Potasio (N-P-K) con dos niveles (90-60 00 y 60-40-00); el segundo fue la fertilización de silicio (Si) con tres niveles (sin Si, Fermiphos y Silifosca®), cuya combinación originó seis tratamientos; los cuales se distribuyeron en un diseño experimental de bloques al azar con tres repeticiones. La fertilización N-P-K no afectó estadísticamente las variables evaluadas; excepto el diámetro que, fue estadísticamente diferente y se incrementó en 2% con 90-60-00. La aplicación de silicio (Fermiphos y Silifosca®) aumentó más de 12% la longitud y 6% el diámetro de la mazorca y 24% el rendimiento de grano. La fertilización con 90-60-00 + silicio (Fermiphos y Silifosca®) incrementó de 8 a 32% el tamaño y rendimiento; mientras que, la fertilización con 60-40-00 + silicio (Fermiphos y Silifosca®) superó de 4 a 28% los parámetros evaluados. El incremento de la fórmula de fertilización tuvo impactos mínimos y no constantes en el tamaño de la mazorca. Pero, la aplicación de Silifosca® o Fermiphos combinada con la fertilización N-P-K favoreció cambios positivos en el tamaño de la mazorca y rendimiento de grano con 90-60-00 y la adición de Silifosca®.

Abstract. La Rumorosa region, located in northwestern Mexico, is characterized by intense local wind speeds, which led to the installation of wind farms. In this area, the contribution of wind power from the Santa Ana winds (SAWs), which are part of the regional wind regime, is unknown. In addition, the valley-mountain winds, cold fronts, extratropical storms, and other meteorological phenomena contribute to the totality of wind power production. For this reason, this study focused on classifying SAW events over a period of 10 years (2005-2014) considering the following categories: “weak,” “moderate,” and “strong.” The criteria for the analysis were associated with the average wind velocity magnitude, the dimensionless pressure gradient, and the normalization of pressure values, gust magnitude, and average wind velocity magnitude. The proposed classification provides information on the behavior of SAW in the area and, by extension, their contribution to wind power generation in La Rumorosa.

Resumen. La región de La Rumorosa, localizada en el noroeste de México, se caracteriza por sus fuertes velocidades en la magnitud del viento a nivel local, lo que ha originado la instalación de parques eólicos. En esta zona, no se conoce de forma precisa la contribución de energía eléctrica eólica de los vientos de Santa Ana (VSA), que son parte del régimen de viento regional. Además los vientos de valle-montaña, los frentes fríos, las tormentas extratropicales y otros fenómenos meteorológicos, en conjunto, contribuyen a la totalidad de energía eléctrica generada. Por ello, este estudio se centra en clasificar, por un periodo temporal de 10 años (2005-2014), los eventos de VSA considerando las categorías: “débil”, “moderado” y “fuerte”. En el análisis se aplicaron criterios asociados a los parámetros de la magnitud de la velocidad promedio del viento, el gradiente de presión adimensional y la normalización de valores de presión, magnitud de la velocidad de ráfaga y magnitud de la velocidad promedio del viento. La clasificación propuesta proporciona información sobre el comportamiento de los VSA en la zona y, por ende, su contribución en la generación de energía eólica en La Rumorosa.

RESUMEN Conocer y comprender el desarrollo histórico de una disciplina académica, permite identificar con mayor claridad su avance a futuro. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es presentar una breve descripción del proceso histórico que ha experimentado el desarrollo de la Ciencia del Suelo en el Paraguay. Metodológicamente se basó en la revisión e indagación de materiales bibliográficos y entrevistas a expertos nacionales afines a la Ciencia del Suelo. El abordaje histórico, incluye la revisión y análisis en cuanto a la implementación y enseñanza de la Ciencia del Suelo en el Paraguay; asimismo, se revisó el proceso histórico para la instalación de los primeros Laboratorios de suelo, además de la consolidación de la Asociación científica de la ciencia del suelo en el Paraguay. Como resultados, la educación de la Ciencia del Suelo en el Paraguay tiene muy importantes avances, especialmente incorporando expertos capacitados tanto en universidades del extranjero, así como en universidades nacionales. También hubo mejoría sustancial en la cantidad y calidad de Laboratorios de Suelos, responsables de facilitar los estudios de suelos en el país. Así mismo se consiguió resultados importantes en los estudios de suelos. En el campo gremial se ha logrado avanzar con la creación de la Sociedad Paraguaya de Ciencia del Suelo (SOPACIS).

ABSTRACT Knowing and understanding the historical development of an academic discipline allows us to identify more clearly its future progress. The main objective of this work is to present a brief description of the historical process experienced by the development of Soil Science in Paraguay. Methodologically, it was based on the review and investigation of bibliographic materials and interviews to national experts related to Soil Science. The historical approach includes the review and analysis of the implementation and teaching of Soil Science in Paraguay; likewise, the historical process for the installation of the first Soil Laboratories in Paraguay was reviewed, as well as the consolidation of the scientific association of Soil Science in Paraguay. As results, Soil Science education in Paraguay has made progress in the period studied; it has incorporated experts trained both in foreign universities and in Paraguayan universities; there was a substantial improvement in the quantity and quality of Soil Laboratories, responsible for facilitating studies in the country; Significant progress was also made in soil studies and in the field of the association, progress has been made with the creation and strengthening of the Paraguayan Society of Soil Science (SOPACIS).

RESUMEN Introducción: En enero de 2020 la Organización Mundial de la Salud declara el estado de pandemia por COVID-19. Los enfermos con cáncer de pulmón tienen gran vulnerabilidad ante esta enfermedad. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto de la COVID-19 en los enfermos con diagnóstico de cáncer de pulmón. Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y longitudinal en 273 enfermos con cáncer de pulmón, discutidos en el Grupo Multidisciplinario de Tórax del Hospital Universitario General Calixto García desde el 2019 hasta el 2021. Se analizaron diferentes variables y se aplicaron análisis estadísticos, tales como porcentaje, desviación estándar y media. Resultados: El mayor número de enfermos operados discutidos en el grupo multidisciplinario fue durante el 2019 (21 para un 19,45 %). La etapa clínica II predominó en el año 2019, en 10 pacientes. La lobectomía fue la técnica más empleada y predominó en el 2019 en 16 enfermos (76,2 %), mientras que durante el 2020-2021 fueron 7. En estos años se diagnosticaron con COVID-19 un total de 17 individuos no operados y fallecieron 11. Conclusiones: Durante el período 2020-2021 disminuyó el número de casos discutidos por cáncer de pulmón en el Grupo Multidisciplinario de Tórax del Hospital Universitario General Calixto García. La mayoría no tuvo criterio de cirugía. La lobectomía fue la técnica quirúrgica más empleada, aunque se redujo su realización durante el 2020-2021. La mayoría de los enfermos que contrajeron COVID-19 no fueron operados y más de la mitad de ellos fallecieron.

Resumen El objetivo de este artículo fue describir la experiencia de un caso exitoso de inclusión en el campo laboral de una persona con trastorno del espectro autista (TEA) por medio del acompañamiento dado en el lugar de trabajo. Está enmarcado bajo una metodología cualitativa, con un diseño de estudio de caso relatado desde la experiencia de una compañera de trabajo. La selección de la muestra fue por conveniencia, ya que se dio en un contexto específico donde la Universidad de Costa Rica contrató a una persona pianista de 38 años con diagnóstico TEA, que desempeña un rol de pianista acompañante en los cursos de Canto Complementario. La obtención de información se hizo por medio de la recolección de documentos, entrevistas estructuradas a la mamá, a un exprofesor de música y una persona perteneciente al equipo de PROEMDIS, además de observaciones con participación completa. Los datos obtenidos se categorizaron en cinco criterios temáticos para su análisis: apoyo de la familia durante la infancia, primeros pasos como estudiante de piano en la edad escolar, retos en el ambiente laboral, tipos de apoyo laboral, evolución del proceso de inclusión. Se concluye que abordar el proceso de Oscar con una perspectiva a largo plazo dio como resultado pequeños avances continuos que armaron un cambio positivo en el tiempo. La confianza alcanzada en Oscar en el proceso de estos cuatro años exhibió una favorable modulación de sus emociones, reacciones ante lo nuevo, control de impulsos y conductas disfuncionales, lo cual abrió paso a nuevos contactos y ambientes sociales. Se insta a las entidades empleadoras a crear un ambiente adaptado a sus empleados y empleadas con TEA, para que así logren permanecer en el lugar de trabajo y puedan aspirar a una estabilidad laboral, una mejora en los ingresos que les empodere y motive, con la posibilidad de abrir una brecha hacia una mejor calidad de vida.

Abstract Through this article, the researcher aimed to describe the experience of a successful case of labor inclusion of a person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through workplace support. The study is framed within a qualitative methodology with a case study design narrated from the experience of a colleague at work. Moreover, the sample selection was convenience-based as it occurred in a specific context where the University of Costa Rica hired a 38-year-old pianist with a diagnosis of ASD to perform the role of accompanying pianist for Complementary Singing courses. Regarding the information, the author obtained it through document collection, structured interviews with the pianist's mother, a former music teacher, and a person belonging to the PROEMDIS team, in addition to observations with full participation. Furthermore, the data obtained were categorized into five thematic criteria: family support in childhood, first steps as a piano student in school age, challenges in the work environment, types of work support, and evolution of the inclusion process. Hence, the investigator concluded that approaching the inclusion process with a long-term perspective resulted in small continuous advances that built a positive change over time. The trust achieved in the process over these four years exhibited a favorable modulation of emotions, reactions to new experiences, impulse control, and dysfunctional behaviors, opening the way to new social contacts and environments. Employers are urged to create an environment adapted to their employees with ASD so that they can remain in the workplace and aspire to job stability, an improvement in income that empowers and motivates them, giving the possibility of opening a path towards a better quality of life.

Abstract Background: Phenylephrine (PHE) produces higher aortothoracic contractile tension with endothelium (T[ON]) compared to potassium chloride (KCl). Both are exponential triphasic responses (Φ1, Φ2, Φ3) but their kinetics have not been compared with the time constant (τ in s). Goal. To study the triphasic T[On] kinetics (τ: Φ1, Φ2(fundamental) and Φ3) of 1μM PHE vs 40mM KCl. Material and methods: We compared numerical values of τ1, τ2, τ3 of the T[On] of prepubertal male Wistar rats (without established reproductive capacity) with adult male ones. Results: Φ2 showed higher gain (g), shorter delay time (s), and faster kinetics of T[On] at PHE than at KCl. Conclusions: In the time course of T[On] only the fundamental exponential phase was faster with PHE than with KCl.

Resumen: El estado de Guerrero cuenta con gran diversidad de chiles nativos que son aprovechados a nivel local y regional, entre ellos, el chile apaxtleco. El objetivo de la investigación fue evaluar los efectos de la radiación a la semilla con rayos gamma 60Co en aspectos morfológicos, parámetros de rendimiento y calidad del fruto de plantas M1 de tres fenotipos de chile apaxtleco. La combinación de las dosis de radiación (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 y 300 Gy) con los tres fenotipos de chile originó 21 tratamientos, que se distribuyeron en un diseño completamente al azar con seis repeticiones. La radiación gamma no afectó la altura, el diámetro del tallo y la formación de ramas, ni los componentes del rendimiento (número y peso de frutos) de las plantas. En calidad del fruto; las dosis intermedias (100 a 200 Gy) incrementaron el peso (fresco y seco) y diámetro (polar y ecuatorial) de los frutos; mientras que, dosis altas redujeron la formación de semillas. Sin embargo, la interacción de las dosis de radiación con el fenotipo de chile mostró significancia estadística (α ≤ 0.05) en crecimiento, rendimiento y calidad del fruto; ya que el Ancho liso presentó plantas con mayor altura y número de ramas; mientras que, el Ancho chino 1 y 2 tuvieron mayor rendimiento y tamaño de frutos. Los individuos resultantes de semillas tratadas con 100 a 200 Gy pueden usarse a futuro en investigaciones de mejoramiento genético para la selección y obtención de variantes de importancia económica.

Abstract: The state of Guerrero has a great diversity of native chiles that are used locally and regionally, among them, the apaxtleco chili. The objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of radiation to the seed with gamma rays 60Co in morphological aspects, yield parameters and quality of the fruit of M1 plants of three phenotypes of apaxtleco chili. The combination of radiation doses (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 Gy) with the three chili phenotypes resulted in 21 treatments, which were distributed in a completely randomized design with six replications. Gamma radiation did not affect the height, stem diameter and branch formation, nor yield components (number and weight of fruits) of the plants. In quality of the fruit; intermediate doses (100 to 200 Gy) increased the weight (fresh and dry) and diameter (polar and equatorial) of the fruits; whereas, high doses reduced seed formation. However, the interaction of radiation doses with the chili phenotype showed statistical significance (α ≤ 0.05) in growth, yield and fruit quality; since the smooth width presented plants with greater height and number of branches; while Chinese Width 1 and 2 had higher yield and fruit size. Individuals resulting from seeds treated with 100 to 200 Gy can be used in future genetic improvement research for the selection and production of variants of economic importance.

Introduction: Benign non-toxic multinodular goiter is one of the most common endocrine diseases that affect the current population, and it is, in turn, the endocrine disease that most frequently requires surgical intervention. Objective: To show the results of percutaneous ethanol injection in the treatment of patients with benign non-toxic multinodular goiter in the short and medium term. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted in patients with benign nontoxic multinodular goiter treated with percutaneous ethanol injection. The categorical variables were described by absolute frequencies and percentages, and for the numerical variables the mean, standard deviation, as well as the minimum and maximum values were calculated. To evaluate the changes between the initial and final volumes of the nodules, the Student's t-test for related samples was used. Results: The mean percentage reduction in the volume of the nodules was 48.23 ± 9.55; 58.05 ± 11.79 and 69.49 ± 13.11; a month, 3 months and 6 months after the treatment, respectively. Clinical success was complete in 67.3%, 75.5%, and 87.8% of the patients, at 1, 3, and 6 months of post-treatment follow-up, respectively. There were no complications. Conclusions: Percutaneous ethanol injection is an alternative to surgery for the treatment of patients with benign non-toxic multinodular goiter, it is safe, effective, with transient adverse effects and very rare complications in the short and medium term.

RESUMENIntroducción: El bocio multinodular no tóxico benigno es una de las enfermedadesendocrinas más comunes que afectan a la población actual, y es a su vez la enfermedadendocrina que con mayor frecuencia requiere intervención quirúrgica.Objetivo: Mostrar los resultados de la inyección percutánea de etanol en el tratamiento depacientes con bocio multinodular no tóxico benigno a corto y mediano plazo.Métodos: Se realizó un estudio longitudinal, prospectivo, en pacientes con bociomultinodular no tóxico benigno, tratados con inyección percutánea de etanol. Las variablescategóricas se describieron por frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes y para las numéricas secalculó la media, la desviación estándar, así como el valor mínimo y el máximo. Paraevaluar los cambios entre los volúmenes inicial y final de los nódulos se utilizó la prueba t deStudent para muestras relacionadas.Resultados: La media del porciento de reducción del volumen de los nódulos fue de 48,23 ±9,55; 58,05 ± 11,79 y 69,49 ± 13,11; al mes, 3 meses y 6 meses de realizado el tratamientorespectivamente. El éxito clínico fue completo en el 67,3 %, 75,5 % y el 87,8 % de lospacientes, al mes, 3 meses y 6 meses de seguimiento post tratamiento respectivamente. Nose presentaron complicaciones.Conclusiones: La inyección percutánea de etanol es una alternativa a la cirugía para el tratamiento de los pacientes con bocio multinodular no tóxico benigno, es segura, efectiva, con efectos adversos transitorios y complicaciones muy poco frecuentes a corto y mediano plazo.

Introdução: O bócio multinodular benigno não tóxico é uma das doenças endócrinas mais comuns que afetam a população atual, sendo, por sua vez, a doença endócrina que mais frequentemente requer intervenção cirúrgica. Objetivo: Mostrar os resultados da injeção percutânea de etanol no tratamento de pacientes com bócio multinodular benigno não tóxico a curto e médio prazo. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo longitudinal prospectivo em pacientes com bócio multinodular benigno não tóxico tratados com injeção percutânea de etanol. As variáveis categóricas foram descritas por frequências absolutas e percentuais, e para as variáveis numéricas foram calculados a média, desvio padrão, bem como os valores mínimo e máximo. Para avaliar as mudanças entre os volumes inicial e final dos nódulos, foi utilizado o teste t de Student para amostras relacionadas. Resultados: A redução percentual média no volume dos nódulos foi de 48,23 ± 9,55; 58,05 ± 11,79 e 69,49 ± 13,11; um mês, 3 meses e 6 meses após o tratamento, respectivamente. O sucesso clínico foi completo em 67,3%, 75,5% e 87,8% dos pacientes, em 1, 3 e 6 meses de acompanhamento pós-tratamento, respectivamente. Não houve complicações. Conclusões: A injeção percutânea de etanol é uma alternativa à cirurgia para o tratamento de pacientes com bócio multinodular benigno não tóxico, é segura, eficaz, com efeitos adversos transitórios e complicações muito raras a curto e médio prazo.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Intrathecal chemotherapy is a mainstay component of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment. In Mexico, there is a considerable practice variability in aspects, such as the manner of preparation and the administration technique. Objective: Our objective was to describe the different techniques used for the application of ITC and review the existing recommendations in the literature. Method: A cross-sectional, nationwide survey study was conducted by an electronic questionnaire sent to hematologists and oncologists in Mexico. We collected demographic data, personal experience, intrathecal chemotherapy techniques, drug preparation and postprocedural conduct. Results: We received 173 responses. Twenty percent had an anesthesiologist administering sedation and pain management. The platelet count considered safe was 50 × 109/L in 48% of the participants. In 77% (n = 133) of the cases, the conventional needle with stylet used was, 49% did not receive any added diluent in the intrathecal chemotherapy and only 42% were recommended to rest in a horizontal position for more than 30 min. Conclusion: We identified a considerable variation in the administration of intrathecal chemotherapy across the hematologists in Mexico. We discuss the implications and opportunities in reducing the variation in our setting, highlighting the unmet need to establish guidelines that should be evaluated by the Mexican professional society to produce a position paper regarding practice standardization.

Resumen Las plantaciones de caucho natural del Bajo Cauca antioqueño requieren una alta intensidad de sangría. Esto genera un mayor costo de la mano de obra y sobreexplotación, razón por la que se evaluaron parámetros fisiológicos y de producción en árboles de caucho del clon FX3864, los cuales fueron sometidos a distintas frecuencias de sangría y estimulación química en el Nordeste de Antioquia, Colombia. Se comparó la producción de látex y el contenido de sacarosa, fósforo inorgánico, tioles y sólidos totales en plantas estimuladas con etefón al 2.5 % y sometidas a tres frecuencias de sangría (cada dos, tres y cuatro días). La mayor producción de látex se alcanzó en árboles estimulados y sangrados cada cuatro días (170.99 mL.d-1 por árbol), sin indicios de sobreexplotación para esta frecuencia. La estimulación y la disminución de la intensidad de sangría del árbol de caucho aumentan el rendimiento sin alteraciones metabólicas significativas.

Abstract The natural rubber plantations of Bajo Cauca (Antioquia) require a high tapping intensity. This generates a higher cost of labor and overexploitation. This is why physiological and production parameters were evaluated in rubber trees clone FX3864, which were subjected to different tapping frequencies and chemical stimulation in Northeast of Antioquia, Colombia. The latex yield and the contents of sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, thiols, and total solids content were compared in rubber trees stimulated with 2.5% ethephon and subjected to three tapping frequencies (every two, three, and four days). The highest latex production was reached in trees stimulated and tapped every four days (170.99 mL.d-1 per tree), without indications of overexploitation for this frequency. Stimulation and the reduction of tapping intensity in rubber trees increase the yields without significant metabolic alterations.

Abstract Background: Percentage and speed of germination are crucial factors that can restrict processes involved in plant succession during ecological restoration. Pre-germination treatments and the effect of storage time on germination percentage and mean germination time were investigated in nine native herbaceous plants of the La Primavera Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Question: Do the seeds of the studied species go dormant, and can storage time affect germination percentage and mean germination time? Species studied: Aeschynomene villosa var. longifolia (Micheli) Rudd, Crotalaria pumila Ort., Dalea leporina (Ait.) Bullock, D. foliolosa (Ait.) Barneby, Desmodium aparines (Link) DC., D. distortum (Aubl.) JF Macbr., D. tortuosum (Sw.) DC., Paspalum notatum Flüggé, and Zornia reticulata I. E. Smith. Place and dates of study: Area of Protection of Flora and Fauna La Primavera. From 2019 to 2020 Methods: Under greenhouse conditions, four treatments were applied prior to germination: scarification with a tweezer pliers, immersion in water at 40 ᵒC for 24 and 48 h, and control. Results: Seven species had highly viable (≥ 90 %) seeds after 12 months of storage. Five species with seed dormancy reached germination above 80 % after 24 months of storage and scarification with a tweezer pliers. Mean germination time for most species decreased with the scarification treatment. Conclusion: Our findings provide basic information on the germination of native species that could help restore degraded sites in the La Primavera Flora and Fauna Protection Area.

Resumen Antecedentes: La germinación de semillas y la velocidad de germinación podrían ser factores que restringen los procesos de sucesión de plantas en la restauración ecológica. Se investigó el efecto de tratamientos de germinación y tiempo de almacenamiento en el porcentaje de germinación y el tiempo medio de germinación de nueve herbáceas nativas del Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna La Primavera. Pregunta: ¿Las semillas de las especies estudiadas tienen latencia y puede el tiempo de almacenamiento afectar el porcentaje de germinación y el tiempo medio de germinación? Especies estudiadas: Aeschynomene villosa var. Longifolia (Micheli) Rudd, Crotalaria pumila Ort., Dalea leporina (Ait.) Bullock, D. foliolosa (Ait.) Barneby, Desmodium aparines (Link) DC., D. distortum (Aubl.) JF Macbr., D. tortuosum (Sw.) DC., Paspalum notatum Flüggé y Zornia reticulata I. E, Smith. Lugar y fechas de estudio: Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna La Primavera. De 2019 a 2020 Métodos: En invernadero, con cuatro tratamientos: escarificación con pinzas alicata, inmersión en agua a 40 ᵒC/24 horas y por 48 horas, así como el control. Resultados: Siete especies tuvieron altos porcentajes de viabilidad (≥ 90 %) en semillas con 12 meses de almacenamiento. Cinco especies alcanzaron germinación superior al 80 % con 24 meses de almacenamiento y escarificadas con alicata. El tiempo medio de germinación para la mayoría de las especies disminuyó con el tratamiento de escarificación con alicata. Conclusión: Nuestros hallazgos brindan información básica sobre la germinación de especies nativas que podrían ayudar a restaurar sitios degradados en el APFFLP.

Resumen Antecedentes: El cáncer de células pequeñas (CPCP) representa el 13-15% del total de neoplasias primarias de pulmón. Se caracteriza por su rapidez en la tasa de crecimiento y en el desarrollo de metástasis a distancia. Objetivos: Orientar y estandarizar el tratamiento del CPCP enfermedad extensa en México basado en evidencia clínica nacional e internacional. Material y métodos: Este documento se desarrolló como una colaboración del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología y la Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología en cumplimiento con estándares internacionales. Se integró un grupo conformado por oncólogos médicos, cirujanos oncólogos, cirujanos de tórax, radio-oncólogos y metodólogos con experiencia en revisiones sistemáticas de la literatura y guías de práctica clínica. Resultados: Se consensaron, por el método Delphi y en reuniones a distancia, las recomendaciones en CPCP enfermedad extensa, producto de preguntas de trabajo. Se identificó y evaluó la evidencia científica que responde a cada una de dichas preguntas clínicas antes de incorporarla al cuerpo de la guía. Conclusión: Esta guía proporciona recomendaciones clínicas para el manejo de la enfermedad extensa del CPCP y durante el proceso de toma de decisiones de los clínicos involucrados con su manejo en nuestro país para mejorar la calidad de la atención clínica para estos pacientes.

Abstract Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents 13-15% of all primary lung neoplasms and is characterized by its rapid growth rate and the rapid development of distant metastases. Objectives: To guide and standardize the treatment of extensive disease small cell lung cancer in Mexico based on national and international clinical evidence. Material and methods: This document was developed as a collaboration between the National Cancer Institute and the Mexican Society of Oncology in compliance with international standards. An interdisciplinary group was formed, including medical oncologists, oncological surgeons, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and methodologists with experience in systematic reviews of the literature and clinical practice guidelines. Results: A consensus was reached, both by the Delphi method and in remote meetings, of extensive disease recommendations resulting from work questions. The scientific evidence that answers each of these clinical questions was identified and critically evaluated, before being incorporated into the body of evidence of the Guide. Conclusions: This Clinical Practice Guide provides clinical recommendations for the management of extensive disease of SCLC to contribute to the decision-making process of the clinicians involved with its management in our country, hoping that this will contribute to improving the quality of clinical care in these patients.

Resumen. En la perspectiva ambiental del nuevo milenio, los sistemas indígenas de conocimiento y uso de la biodiversidad son de gran relevancia en la construcción de nuevas estrategias para asegurar la conservación de este patrimonio natural. El objetivo de nuestro estudio fue documentar el conocimiento morfo-anatómico de las aves por indígenas mayas yucatecos. Trabajamos en el estado de Campeche con seis comunidades mayas: Santa Cruz, Nunkiní, San Antonio Sahcabchen, Villa de Guadalupe, Pich y Chencoh en el periodo de 2010 a 2015. A partir de 240 entrevistas estructuradas, registramos la terminología de la anatomía y morfología reconocida para las aves. Obtuvimos el nominativo Ch´íich´ para designar a las aves en general, siendo la presencia de Koj (pico), K´u´uk´umel (plumaje) y Xiik´ (alas) los caracteres esenciales que se usan para definir y clasificar a este grupo animal. El sistema maya reconoce y nombra 54 órganos anatómicos y 16 estructuras morfológicas, por lo que a nivel nacional representa una de las nomenclaturas indígenas más completas para la clase Aves. El registro de una amplia nomenclatura morfo-anatómica tiene una alta importancia en la estructura perceptual como diferenciadora e identificadora de un dominio animal. Asimismo, constituye una aportación diagnóstica del nivel cognoscitivo e interacción que aún tienen los indígenas mayas con la avifauna y la diversidad faunística en general, lo cual les ha permitido generar una gama de conocimientos detallados de sus hábitos y biología general.

Abstract. In the environmental perspective of the new millennium, indigenous systems of knowledge and use of biodiversity provide valuable input for the construction of natural heritage conservation strategies. Our study aimed to document the morpho-anatomical knowledge of birds by the indigenous Yucatan Maya. From 2010 to 2015, we carried out 240 structured interviews, recording anatomical and morphological terminology recognized for birds in six Maya communities in Campeche: Santa Cruz, Nunkiní, San Antonio Sahcabchen, Villa de Guadalupe, Pich and Chencoh. We found that birds in general were given the name Ch’ijch’, with the presence of Koj (beak), Koj (beak), K ́u ́uk ́umel (feathers), and Xiik ́ (wings) being essential characters used to define and classify this animal group. The Mayan system recognizes and names 54 anatomical organs and 16 morphological structures, making it one of the most complete indigenous nomenclatures of the class Aves nationally. This record of a broad morpho-anatomical nomenclature is of high importance in the perceptual structure as a differentiator and identifier of an animal domain. Furthermore, it offers a diagnostic of the cognitive level regarding this domain and indicates an ongoing high interaction between Mayan indigenous people and their avifauna, and faunal diversity in general, which has enabled them to generate detailed biological and habitat-related knowledge.
