Abstract: Due to the absence of studies related to the digital processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in the semi-arid region of Brazil, the aim of this study was to test different filters for reducing speckle noise in SAR images, serving as a reference for choosing the most suitable filter for different studies in this vegetation. The filters: Gamma Map, Lee Sigma, Median, Frost and Refined Lee in different window sizes were tested on the VV, VH and VH/VV polarizations in the Sentinel-1A images, verifying the responses under the influence of the dry and post-rainy period in the Caatinga vegetation. In the state of Sergipe, Brazil, 30 samples of Caatinga fragments obtained from Sentinel-1A images for the dry and post-rainy season were selected. For all images evaluated, the values of the averages of the equivalent number of looks (ENL) were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance. The Gamma filter showed the highest amount of means (22) with the highest ENL values, followed by Median (5). The generation of ENL results and their comparison, considering all variables used, was essential to serve as a basis for choosing the filtering method in studies that use data from Sentinel-1A in the Caatinga region.

Resumo O Brasil tem uma vasta área territorial com várias tipologias florestais compostas por diferentes fisionomias. É necessário o mapeamento das áreas de florestas no país, com o intuito de se conhecer sua distribuição espacial, bem como de avaliar sua dinâmica de expansão ou redução. Uma forma eficiente e confiável de se obter tais informações se dá por meio de técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, podendo ser aplicado o imageamento por radar (micro-ondas), que por sua vez tem sido o foco de muitos pesquisadores. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo é reunir as produções científicas relacionadas à utilização de imagens de radar aplicadas ao mapeamento das diferentes florestas no Brasil, analisando as mais recentes abordagens e técnicas de classificação. Notou-se uma significativa aplicação de imagens SAR em florestas do bioma Amazônia, principalmente para a detecção do desmatamento. As imagens do sistema do radar de banda L do ALOS/PALSAR foram as mais utilizadas nos mapeamentos das tipologias florestais, associadas a vários algoritmos classificadores, tais como: Iterated Conditional Modes, Máxima Verossimilhança e random forest. Os tipos de dados trabalhados nas classificações variaram de acordo com a capacidade polarimétrica de cada imagem, com destaque à maior utilização dos coeficientes de retroespalhamento e atributos extraídos das decomposições de suas matrizes. Observou-se ainda que a maioria dos trabalhos relacionaram os dados SAR com os obtidos por sensores ópticos. Portanto, o presente estudo possibilitou reunir várias aplicações de técnicas de classificação para a discriminação de diferentes formações florestais no Brasil utilizando o imageamento por micro-ondas, indicando a potencialidade dos vários classificadores nos dados SAR, mostrando que os sistemas de radar são uma importante tecnologia utilizada para o mapeamento de florestas no país.

Abstract Brazil has a large territorial area with a large cover of vegetation and several forest typologies with different physiognomies. It is necessary to map the forest areas in the country in order to know the spatial distribution and the dynamics of each forest formation. An efficient and reliable way to obtain this information is using remote sensing techniques, and radar - SAR - imaging can be applied, which in turn has been the focus of many researchers. Thus, the objective of the present study is to gather scientific productions related to the use of radar images applied to the mapping of different forests in Brazil, analyzing the most recent approaches and classification techniques. There was a significant application of SAR images in forests of the Amazon biome, mainly for the detection of deforestation. The images of the ALOS/PALSAR L-band radar system were the most used in the mapping of forest typologies, associated to several classifier algorithms, such as: Iterated Conditional Modes, Maximum Likelihood and random forest. The data types worked in the classifications varied according to the polarimetric capacity of each image, with emphasis on the greater use of backscattering coefficients and attributes extracted from matrix decompositions. It was also observed that most studies related SAR data to those obtained by optical sensors. Therefore, the present study made it possible to gather several applications of classification techniques for the discrimination of forest formations in Brazil using microwave imaging, indicating the potentiality of the various classifiers with SAR images, and showing that radar systems are an important technology that is being used for mapping forests in the country.

ABSTRACT The use of SAR images has been highlighted in scientific research focused on forest data collection worldwide. Thus, the present work aimed at gathering studies turned to the application of SAR images to obtain biophysical variables of forests in Brazil. Based on studies published in recognized databases, a growing amount of publications over time was observed with more focus on researches made mainly in Amazonian biome, followed by planted forests with eucalyptus destined to wood production. Most works were made based on airborne radar data, followed by ALOS/PALSAR and JERS-1 orbital data. It is remarkable the scientific knowledge produced using radar data from Brazilian forests, demonstrating that this technology is an other tool for studies and applications in Forestry Sciences that can assist in the country’s forestry management. Nevertheless, the need of studies on the several forest typologies across Brazil was evidenced, along with the lack of research related to radar use to estimate biophysical variables in caatinga and Atlantic Forest biomes.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to characterize the average seasonal pattern of the vegetation in southern grassland in Brazil, and the variability found in the time series of vegetation indices. It also sought to identify similarities in the seasonal pattern of different grassland typologies. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) images from Feb to Dec, 2000 to 2014 were analyzed for ten regions. The grassland typologies studied showed EVI and NDVI profiles consistent with the seasonal dynamics of grassland vegetation under the influence of a subtropical climate, with highest values in the indices during the warm seasons of the year (spring and summer) and lowest in the colder seasons (autumn and winter). Considering the values of EVI and NDVI, grassland typologies were allocated to four groups with similar temporal profiles. Among the groups formed from the EVI index it is possible to identify differences between grassland typologies during the autumn and winter, while the NDVI showed differences only in winter as compared to the other seasons.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar e comparar índices espectrais em plantios de eucalipto e correlacioná-los com dados de precipitação para o período de 2003 a 2012, a fim de avaliar se as alterações climáticas tem influência na fenologia da vegetação. A metodologia consistiu na obtenção das médias dos índices espectrais (NDVI, EVI e GPP) de imagens MODIS e a elaboração dos perfis temporais da vegetação de eucalipto, considerando mudas clonais e de semente. Estes perfis foram correlacionados com dados de precipitação do TRMM. Os resultados mostraram valores de NDVI superiores ao EVI, porém sem sazonalidade claramente definida, enquanto o GPP demonstrou comportamento sazonal bem definido em todos os anos. A correlação entre os índices espectrais e a precipitação apresentou resultados representativos para alguns anos, incluindo períodos de El Niño e La Niña. Concluiu-se que os produtos MODIS permitem a avaliação dos ciclos fenológicos em plantios de eucalipto, principalmente para as fases de plantio e corte.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to analyze and compare spectral indexes in eucalyptus plantations and correlate them with precipitation data for the period from 2003 to 2012, in order to assess whether climate change has an influence on vegetation phenology. The methodology entailed obtaining the mean spectral indexes (NDVI, EVI and GPP) of MODIS images and elaborating the temporal profiles of the eucalyptus vegetation, for both cloned seedlings and those grown from seeds. These profiles were correlated with TRMM precipitation data. The results showed NDVI values higher than the EVI, although a clearly de fined seasonality was not present, whereas the GPP demonstrated a well-defined seasonal behavior in all of the years. The correlation between the spectral indices and the precipitation had representative results for some years, including El Niño and La Niña periods. It was concluded that MODIS products allow the evaluation of phenological cycles in eucalyptus plantations, principally for the planting and cutting phases.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar y comparar índices espectrales en plantaciones de eucalipto y correlacionarlos con los datos de precipitaciones para el periodo de 2003 a 2012, con el fin de evaluar si el cambio climático influye en la fenología de vegetación. La metodología consistió en la obtención de medidas de los índices espectrales (NDVI, EVI e GPP) de imágenes MODIS y la elaboración de los perfiles temporales de la vegetación de eucalipto, considerando plantas clonadas y de semilla. Estos perfiles fueron correlacionados con datos de precipitación del TRMM. Los resultados mostraron valores de NDVI superiores al EVI, pero sin estacionalidad claramente definida, sin embargo el GPP demostró comportamiento estacional bien definido em todos los años. La correlación entre los índices espectrales y la precipitación presentó resultados representativos en algunos años, incluyendo periodos de El Niño y La Niña. Se concluye que los productos MODIS permiten la evaluación de los ciclos fenológicos en plantaciones de eucalipto, principalmente para las fases de plantío y corte.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo aumentar a sensibilidade do NDVI, derivado de imagem de satélite, às variações de parâmetros biofísicos através do uso de um fator de ajuste baseado na idade da floresta. Este fator é definido como a razão entre a idade do povoamento e a idade de rotação, cujo valor multiplicado pelo NDVI (derivado de imagens Landsat-5/TM) gerou um índice ajustado chamado NDVI_a. SAVI também foi calculado. A relação entre estes índices de vegetação com volume de madeira de Eucalyptus e Pinus foi investigada. O fator de ajuste fez com que ocorresse um aumento no intervalo dinâmico do NDVI, uma vez que povoamentos mais velhos tenderam a assumir os valores mais altos do NDVI, enquanto nos povoamentos mais novos o NDVI tendeu a assumir valores mais baixos. Desta maneira, relações diretas e significativas entre NDVI_a e volume de madeira puderam ser mantidas em intervalos mais amplos de volume de madeira. Contudo, se observou que NDVI_a só foi estatisticamente superior ao NDVI e SAVI quando se dispunha de dados com valores de idade detalhados. Conclui-se que, a idade do povoamento florestal tem potencial para melhorar a sensibilidade do NDVI aos parâmetros biofísicos permitindo que estimativas possam ser feitas desde povoamentos novos até povoamentos adultos.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to increase satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) sensitivity to biophysical parameters changes with aid of a forest age-based adjustment factor. This factor is defined as a ratio between stand age and age of rotation, which value multiplied by Landsat-5/TM-derived NDVI generated the so-called adjusted index NDVI_a. Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) was also calculated. The relationship between these vegetation indices (VI) with Eucalyptus and Pinus stands’ wood volume was investigated. The adjustment factor caused an increase in NDVI dynamic range values, since older stands tended to be assigned with highest NDVI values, while younger ones tended to be forced to assume lower NDVI values. As a result, direct and significant relationship between NDVI_a and wood volume could be maintained for wider ranges of wood volume. However, it was observed that NDVI_a was only statistically superior to NDVI and SAVI when a detailed age dataset is available. It is conclude that, the stand age has potential to improve NDVI sensitivity to biophysical parameters allowing that quantitative estimates could be made since young to adult stands.

Este trabalho visa ao estudo da relação entre a distribuição de fitofisionomias do Parque Nacional de Brasília (PNB) e variáveis topográficas, para avaliar o potencial de dados SRTM isoladamente, como complemento aos dados tradicionalmente aplicados no sensoriamento remoto da vegetação. Esta relação foi verificada através de análises discriminantes entre o mapa de vegetação referência do PNB e as seguintes variáveis morfométricas: elevação, declividade, orientação de vertente, curvatura vertical e curvatura horizontal. Tais análises indicaram as classes de vegetação que podem ser separadas com base nas condições topográficas do terreno. As variáveis morfométricas mais importantes na distinção entre os tipos vegetacionais foram a elevação, a declividade e a orientação de vertente. Apesar de os dados morfométricos mostrarem potencial indicativo das classes de vegetação, as análises resultaram em discriminação em um nível aquém do detalhamento temático do mapa referência. Tal desempenho pode ser explicado pela incompatibilidade das escalas de variação exibidas entre os dados morfométricos em relação ao tamanho das unidades de mapeamento da vegetação. Além disso, a variação de tipos de vegetação do cerrado pode ser explicada por uma série de outros fatores além da topografia. Com base nas análises discriminantes das variáveis morfométricas, foi possível o mapeamento experimental da vegetação ao nível de subfisionomias.

This paper aims to study the relationship between the distribution of vegetation in Brasilia National Park and topographic variables, to evaluate the potential of SRTM data alone, in addition to data traditionally used in remote sensing of vegetation. A map of vegetation of the area was used as a reference and the morphometric variables (elevation, slope, aspect and profile and plane curvatures) were compared to the mapped units. Analyses indicated vegetation types easily discriminated depending on topographic position. The variables elevation, slope and aspect were shown to be the most important for their high discrimination power of the vegetation types. Although morphometric data are recognized as having strong potential for characterizing vegetation, this was not shown in the results, due to the mismatching of variability scales between the two sources of data, where large units tend to exhibit similar distribution patterns of morphometry, and comprise classes with different responses for morphometric constraints. Discriminant analyses of morphometric variables allowed vegetation mapping up to sub-physiognomy levels.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial das variáveis geomorfométricas extraídas de dados SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) para identificação de tipos vegetacionais da região do interflúvio Madeira-Purus. As variáveis geomorfométricas (elevação, declividade, orientação de vertente, curvatura vertical e curvatura horizontal) foram confrontadas com o mapa de vegetação do projeto RADAMBRASIL através de análises de histogramas e análises discriminantes. Tais análises indicaram os grupos de classes vegetacionais que podem ser separados mais facilmente em contraste com outros grupos que ocorrem sob as mesmas condições topográficas. As variáveis de relevo mais importantes na distinção entre os tipos vegetacionais foram: a elevação, a declividade e a orientação de vertentes. Apesar dos dados geomorfométricos mostrarem potencial indicativo das classes de vegetação, as análises resultaram em discriminação em um nível aquém do detalhamento temático máximo apresentado pelos dados RADAM. Tal desempenho pode ser explicado pela incompatibilidade das escalas de variação exibidas entre os dados geomorfométricos em relação ao tamanho das unidades de mapeamento da vegetação, além da co-ocorrência de classes de respostas distintas ao relevo sob uma mesma associação de classes sob as mesmas classes na legenda. Com base nas análises discriminantes das variáveis geomorfométricas, foi possível o mapeamento da vegetação experimentalmente até o nível de subfisionomias.
