BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Captive rearing of chicks can be crucial to the success of management plans for endangered species of birds. This study was conducted to document lesions of hornbill chicks to provide information for pathologists and clinicians to improve rearing success in captive hornbills METHODS: Clinical histories and post-mortem reports were evaluated for 40 hornbill chicks (< 3.5 months old), from three species submitted for pathological evaluation to the National Zoological Garden, South African National Biodiversity Institute between 2003 and 2017. The cause of death and histological features present were tabulated RESULTS: In this group of chicks, 12 (30%) were a week or younger at the time of death. Bacterial infections, especially of the lung and gastro-intestinal tract, were the most common cause of death (38%). Visceral gout, renal tubular degeneration or necrosis, bacterial ventriculitis and pulmonary congestion were the most often recorded lesions. Splenic, thymic and bursal lymphoid depletion and/or necrosis were common. Chicks of all ages commonly showed hepatocyte vacuolar degeneration; and hepatic, renal and splenic haematopoiesis of no pathological significance CONCLUSION: This long-term survey in captive hornbill chicks provides baseline information on lesions and conditions seen in these birds and facilitated the formulation of improved captive management manuals of hornbills. Additional detailed postmortem examinations following standardised protocols, including bacterial culture, of hornbill chicks would further improve our understanding of hornbill chick diseases

We present the status and plans of the Angra Project, a new reactor neutrino oscillation experiment, proposed to be built in Brazil at the Angra dos Reis nuclear complex. This experiment is aimed to measure theta13, the last unknown of the three neutrino mixing angles. We propose a high sensitivity multi-detector experiment, able to reach a sensitivity to antineutrino disappearance down to sin² 2theta13 = 0.006 in a three years running period, by combining a high luminosity design, very low background from cosmic rays and careful control of systematic errors. We also intend to explore the possibility to use the neutrino detector for purposes of safeguards and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

We have determined the distribution of H2 emission in 14 planetary nebulae (PNe), using imaging and photometry published by the 2MASS infrared survey. This technique is only applicable under certain stringent conditions, and requires precise broad band photometry, and accurate spatial registration between the K S and H band images. It is, in addition, only applicable to certain sources, and excludes outflows in which central star and grain thermal excesses are appreciable. Our results for NGC 3132, NGC 6720, IC 4406 and M 2-9 are closely similar to those of previous narrow band imaging, and confirm that H2 emission is confined to narrow, highly fragmented shells. Similar results are obtained for M 1—7, M 1—8, and M 3—5. Our spatial profiles also confirm that the emission extends outside of the primary ionised shells. Where envelopes are large, and the PNe are more evolved, then the fractional extensions Δθ/θ appear to be at their smallest. They are also similar to the radial widths predicted for H2 abundance profiles, and to the values ΔR/R determined through magnetohydrodynamic modelling of shocks. There appears, finally, to be evidence for an evolution in this parameter, such that Δθ/θ varies with increasing envelope size d(H) as Δθ/θ ∝ d(H)-2 ².

Se ha determinado la distribución de emisión H2 en 14 (NP's), usando imágenes y fotometría publicadas en el catálogo infrarrojo de 2MASS. Esta técnica es aplicable solo bajo ciertas condiciones y requiere fotometría precisa, así como un exacto registro espacial entre las imágenes de banda K S y H. Es, además, sólo aplicable para algunas fuentes, y excluye flujos en los cuales, la estrella central y el exceso de polvo caliente son apreciables. Los resultados para NGC 3132, NGC 6720, IC 4406 y M 2—9 son muy similares a imágenes previas de banda angosta, y confirman que la emisión H2 está confinada a una envoltura delgada muy fragmentada. Se obtienen resultados similares para M 1—7, M 1—8 y M 3—5. Los perfiles espaciales también confirman que la emisión se extiende fuera de las cáscaras ionizadas primarias. Cuando las cáscaras son mayores y las NP's son más evolucionadas, entonces las extensiones fraccionales Δθ/θ parecen ser más pequeñas. También son similares a los anchos radiales predichos para los perfiles de abundancias de H2, y a los valores ΔR/R determinados a través de modelación magnetohidrodinámica de choques. Finalmente, parece haber evidencia para una evolución en este parámetro, tal que Δθ/θ varía con el incremento de la medida de la envoltura d(H) como Δθ/θ ∝d(H)-2.2.

OBJECTIVE: To devise a flowchart suitable for assessing risk of trichomoniasis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea in an adolescent population, not all of whom will be sexually experienced or currently in a relationship. METHODS: The data used to derive the flowchart were generated from cross-sectional microbiological surveys of girls aged 14-19 years in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The flowchart screened on the basis of: (i) sexual experience; (ii) recent sexual activity; (iii) a positive urine leukocyte esterase (LE) test; and (iv) among LE negatives, a history of malodorous/pruritic discharge. FINDINGS: Using this flowchart, we found that 26.2% of all adolescents screened would receive treatment for cervicitis and vaginitis. Chlamydial, gonococcal, and trichomonal infections were correctly diagnosed in 37.5%, 66.7%, and 50 % of the cases, respectively. CONCLUSION: Although the flowchart is more suitable for an adolescent population than the vaginal discharge algorithm used in syndromic management protocols, it still lacks precision and needs adapting to local settings.

OBJETIVO: Elaborar un diagrama adecuado para evaluar el riesgo de tricomoniasis, clamidiasis y gonorrea en una población de mujeres adolescentes, no todas las cuales habían tenido experiencias sexuales o mantenían en ese momento una relación. MÉTODOS: Los datos empleados para elaborar el diagrama se obtuvieron a partir de estudios microbiológicos transversales de muchachas de 14 a 19 años de Port Harcourt (Nigeria). En el diagrama se hace un cribado teniendo en cuenta (i) la experiencia sexual; (ii) la actividad sexual reciente; (iii) la eventual positividad de la prueba de la esterasa leucocitaria (EL) en orina; y (iv), entre los casos EL-negativos, los antecedentes de flujo maloliente o pruriginoso. RESULTADOS: De todas las adolescentes sometidas a ese cribado, el 26,2% recibieron tratamiento contra una cervicitis o vaginitis, y las infecciones por clamidias, gonococos y tricomonas fueron diagnosticadas correctamente en el 37,5%, 66,7%, y 50% de los casos, respectivamente. CONCLUSIÓN: Tratándose de una población de adolescentes, el diagrama es preferible al algoritmo para flujo vaginal empleado en los protocolos de manejo sindrómico, pero adolece aún de imprecisión y ha de ser adaptado a las condiciones locales.

OBJECTIF: Mettre au point un algorithme adapté à l’évaluation du risque de trichomonase, de chlamydiose et de gonococcie dans une population d’adolescentes qui n’ont pas toutes une expérience sexuelle ou ne sont pas engagées présentement dans une relation. MÉTHODES: Les données utilisées pour construire l’algorithme proviennent d’enquêtes microbiologiques transversales chez des adolescentes de 14 à 19 ans habitant Port Harcourt (Nigéria). Les différents points de l’algorithme portent sur: i) l’expérience sexuelle; ii) l’activité sexuelle récente; iii) untest urinaire positif pour la leucocyte estérase (LE); iv) parmi les adolescentes LE négatives, un antécédent de pertes vaginales nauséabondes ou prurigineuses. RÉSULTATS: Parmi l’ensemble des adolescentes examineés, 26,2% ont reçu un traitement pour une cervicite ou une vaginite ; les affections à Chlamydia, à gonocoques et à trichomonas ont été correctement diagnostiquées dans respectivement 37,5 %, 66,7% et 50% des cas. CONCLUSION: Si cet algorithme est mieux adapté à une population d’adolescentes que l’algorithme pour les pertes vaginales utilisé dans les protocoles de prise en charge syndromique, il manque encore de précision et a besoin d’être adapté aux conditions locales.

Many lines of Plasmodium falciparum undrgo a deletion of the right end of chromosome 9 during in vitro culture accompanied by loss of cytoadherence and gametocytogenesis. Selection of cytoadherent cells from a mixed population co-selects for those with an undeleted chromosome 9 and selected cells produce gametocytes. The deletion also results in loss of expression of PfEMP1, the putative cytoadherence ligand, suggesting PfEMP1 or a regulatory gene controlling PfEMP1 expression and gametocytogenesis may be encoded in this region. We have isolated several markers for the deleted region and are currently using a YAC-P. falciparum library to investigate this region of the genome in detail.
