Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes concentrações de retardantes de fogo e de um polímero hidrorretentor sobre a germinação de sementes das espécies florestais tropicais Handroanthu simpetiginosus (ipê-rosa), Tabebuia roseoalba (ipê-branco), Enterolobium schomburgkii (faveira) e Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (paricá). Destaca-se que não foram realizadas comparações entre os produtos, pois estes apresentam diferentes recomendações comerciais e composições químicas. As sementes foram submetidas a soluções de três retardantes de fogo nas seguintes concentrações: i) Phos-Chek WD881® a 0,0; 0,1; 0,3; 0,6; 0,8 e 1,0 mL L-1; ii) Hold Fire® a 0,0; 0,7; 0,9; 1,1; 1,3 e 1,5 mL L-1; e iii) polímero hidrorretentor Nutrigel® a 0,00; 0,10; 0,25; 0,50; 0,75 e 1,0 g L-1. Foram avaliadas quatro repetições de 100, 100, 30 e 25 sementes para as espécies supracitadas, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os testes de germinação foram conduzidos em câmaras de germinação a 30°C e fotoperíodo de 12 h, por 14 dias. Avaliaram-se: porcentagem de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, tempo médio de germinação e vigor de plântulas. O Phos-Chek WD881 reduziu a velocidade de germinação dos ipês e a primeira contagem de germinação e quantidade de plântulas normais dessas espécies e do paricá. O Hold Fire influenciou na porcentagem de germinação do ipê-rosa (máximo de 97,0% em 1,1 mL L-1) e na velocidade de germinação do ipê-branco, mas não causou variações no vigor das plântulas. O polímero hidrorretentor não influenciou na germinação, mas causou redução de 14,3% de plântulas normais para o paricá. Em geral, Phos-Chek WD881 pode ser fitotóxico para o ipê-branco, ipê-rosa e paricá, quando aplicado em concentrações ≥ 0,6 mL L-1; Hold Fire pode promover a germinação do ipê-branco e do ipê-rosa, sem efeitos para as demais espécies; e o polímero hidrorretentor não exerceu nenhum efeito sobre a germinação de sementes das espécies florestais avaliadas.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of fire retardants and water-retaining polymer on seed germination of tropical forest species Handroanthu simpetiginosus (ipê-rosa), Tabebuia roseoalba (ipê-branco), Enterolobium schomburgkii (faveira) and Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (paricá). It is noteworthy that no comparisons were made between the products, as they have different commercial recommendations and chemical compositions. The seeds were submitted to solutions of three fire retardants in the following concentrations: i) Phos-Chek WD881® at 0.0; 0.1; 0.3; 0.6; 0.8 and 1.0 mL L-1; ii) Hold Fire® at 0.0; 0.7; 0.9; 1.1; 1.3 and 1.5 mL L-1; and iii) water-retaining polymer Nutrigel® at 0.0; 0.10; 0.25; 0.50; 0.75 and 1.0 g L-1. Four replicates of 100, 100, 30 and 25 seeds were evaluated for the aforementioned species, in a completely randomized design. The germination tests were conducted in germination chambers at 30°C and 12 hours of photoperiod for 14 days. It was evaluated: germination percentage, first germination count, germination speed index, average germination time and seedling vigor were evaluated. Phos-Chek WD881 reduced the germination speed of the ipês and the first germination count and number of normal seedlings of these species and paricá. Hold Fire influenced the germination percentage of ipê-rosa (maximum 97.0% in 1.1 mL L-1) and the germination speed of ipê-branco, but did not cause variations in seedlings vigor. The water-retaining polymer did not influence germination, but caused a 14.3% reduction of normal seedlings to paricá. In general, Phos-Chek WD881 can be phytotoxic to ipê-branco, ipê-rosa and paricá, when applied in concentrations ≥ 0.6 mL L-1; Hold Fire can promote the germination of ipê-branco and ipê-rosa, without effects for the other species; and the water-retainng polymer had no effect on the seed germination of the evaluated forest species.

RESUMO Retardantes de fogo são eficazes em combater incêndios florestais, contudo, suas implicações ambientais, principalmente quanto à vegetação, precisam ser melhor esclarecidas. Neste trabalho, objetivouse avaliar os efeitos de retardantes de fogo sobre o crescimento inicial de Schizolobium amazonicum. Os tratamentos consistiram em aplicações via substrato e foliar de concentrações dos retardantes de fogo: Phos-Chek WD-881® (0; 3,00; 6,00; 8,00 e 10,00 mL L-1); Hold Fire® (0; 7,00; 9,00; 12,00; e 15,00 mL L-1 ) e do polímero hidroretentor Nutrigel® usado como retardante alternativo (0; 0,25; 0,50; 0,75 e 1,00 g L-1). Para avaliação dos efeitos realizaram-se análises de crescimento, com 10 repetições por tratamento. Compararamse as médias pelo Teste de Tukey (p<0,05) conforme significância da análise de variância A concentração de 10,00 mL L-1 de Phos-Chek WD881 via foliar proporcionou incrementos na área foliar (71%) e altura (18%) das mudas. No decorrer do tempo, a mesma concentração de Phos-Chek favoreceu o crescimento em altura (32%) e acúmulo de massa seca total (33%). A concentração de 15 mL L-1 de Hold Fire® via foliar comprometeu em 45% o acúmulo de biomassa seca das mudas. Inicialmente, 1,00 g L-1 de Nutrigel® via substrato diminuiu em 28 % a média de massa seca. A concentração 0,50 g L-1 do polímero via foliar do polímero promoveu incrementos na área foliar (70%), altura (29%) e massa seca das folhas (89%). Portanto, Phos-Chek via foliar favoreceu o crescimento da parte aérea de S. amazonicum. Hold Fire® via foliar prejudicou o acúmulo de biomassa das mudas. Nutrigel® via substrato não provocou prejuízos duradouros sobre o crescimento inicial de S. amazonicum. 0,50 g L-1 via foliar do polímero teve efeito positivo sobre o crescimento da parte aérea das mudas.

ABSTRACT Flame retardants are efficient in fighting wildfire; however, their environmental implications, especially regarding the vegetation, need to be clarified. This work aimed at assessing the effects of flame retardant on the initial growth of Schizolobium amazonicum. Treatments consisted in applying different flame retardant concentrations via substrate and leaf: Phos-Chek WD-881® (0, 3.00, 6.00, 8.00 and 10.00 mL L-1), Hold Fire® (0, 7.00, 9.00, 12.00 and 15.00 mL L-1) and water-retaining polymer Nutrigel® used as alternative retardant (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 g L-1). Growth analyses were carried out to assess the effects of these substances (10 repetitions per treatment). The aliquot of 10.00 mL L-1 of Phos-Chek WD881 applied on the leaves led to an increase of 70% in leaf area and 15% in seedling height. The same Phos-Chek concentration favored height increase (32%) and total dry mass accumulation (33%) throughout time. The concentration of 15 mL L-1 of Hold Fire® applied on leaves, compromised 45% the accumulation of dry biomass in the seedling. Initially, 1.00 g L-1 of Nutrigel® applied via substrate led to an increase of 70% in leaf area, 29% in plant height, and 89% in leaf dry mass. Therefore, Phos-Chek applied on leaves favored shoot growth in S. amazonicum. Hold Fire® applied on leaves impaired biomass accumulation in seedlings. Nutrigel® applied on substrate does not cause long-lasting damage to the initial growth of S. amazonicum. The aliquot of 0.50 g L-1 administered via polymer leave had positive effect on seedling shoot.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência de retardantes do fogo submetidos a diferentes concentrações e tempos pós-aplicação, em queimas experimentais em plantação de Eucalyptus urograndis (clone H13), na transição dos biomas Cerrado-Amazônia do estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Foram avaliados dois retardantes comerciais (Phos-Chek WD881® e Hold Fire®) e um alternativo (polímero hidroretentor - Nutrigel®), no volume de calda de 2 L m-2, em diferentes concentrações (Phos-Chek WD881®: 0,1; 0,6; 0,8; 1,0%; Hold Fire®: 0,7; 0,9; 1,1; 1,3; 1,5%; Nutrigel®: 0,0010; 0,0025; 0,0050; 0,0075; 0,0100%) e tempos pós-aplicação sobre o material combustível (serapilheira) (60, 90 e 120 minutos). Avaliou-se a velocidade de propagação da frente do fogo, o comprimento das chamas e o percentual de material combustível remanescente e consumido nas queimas. Os tempos pós-aplicação de 60 e 90 minutos dos retardantes no combustível não afetam a eficácia dos produtos, todavia, após 120 minutos, ocorre redução da eficiência na ação contra o fogo. Independentemente do tempo pós-aplicação dos retardantes, as concentrações ótimas foram de 1,0; 1,5 e 0,0060% para Phos-Chek WD881®, Hold Fire® e Nutrigel®, no volume de calda de 2 L m-2.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of fire retardants submitted to different concentrations and post-application times, during experimental burning of Eucalyptus urograndis plantation (clone H13), in the transition of Cerrado-Amazon biomes from Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Two commercial retardants (Phos-Chek WD881® and Hold Fire®) and one alternative (hydro retainer polymer - Nutrigel®) were evaluated in the syrup volume of 2 L m-2 at different concentrations (Phos-Chek®: 0,1; 0,6; 0,8; 1,0%; Hold Fire®: 0,7; 0,9; 1,1; 1,3; 1,5%; Nutrigel®: 0,0010; 0,0025; 0,0050; 0,0075; 0,0100%) and post-application times on the fuel (litter) (60, 90 and 120 minutes). The in spread of the fire front, the flames length and the percentage of remaining and consumed fuel in the burns were evaluated. The post-application times of 60 and 90 minutes of the retardants in the fuel does not affect the effectiveness of the products, however, after 120 minutes, there is a reduction in fire suppression efficiency. Regardless of the time after application of retardants, the optimal concentrations were 1.0, 1.5 and 0.0060% for Phos-Chek WD881®, Hold Fire® and Nutrigel® for the 2 L m-2 spray volume.

Resumo Os aceiros químicos consistem em faixas com aplicações de retardantes do fogo utilizados no combate indireto de incêndios florestais. Embora eficiente, a inexistência de recomendações de uso prático restringe a aplicação e eficácia dos produtos. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência de retardantes do fogo em queimas controladas em área de Eucalyptus urograndis (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla) (clone H13) com 6,0 anos de idade, por meio da aplicação de diferentes concentrações e volumes de calda, considerando 1,0 h como tempo pós-aplicação. Foram avaliados três retardantes do fogo: dois comerciais (Phos-Chek WD881® e Hold Fire®) e um alternativo (polímero hidrorretentor: Nutrigel®) com cinco concentrações e nos volumes de calda de 0,5; 1,0 e 2,0 L m-2 (apenas água e sem aplicação de calda foram as referências). O comportamento do fogo foi avaliado pela velocidade de propagação do fogo, comprimento das chamas (e suas respectivas taxas de reduções) e material combustível remanescente e consumido. Para todos os retardantes, o aumento do volume de calda propiciou redução das variáveis do comportamento do fogo, sendo recomendado a aplicação de calda equivalente a 2,0 L m-2. As eficiências do Phos-Chek WD881® e do Hold Fire® apresentaram comportamentos lineares crescentes indicando que o aumento da concentração propiciou maior do controle do fogo, todavia, o Nutrigel® apresentou eficiência com resposta quadrática ao incremento das concentrações. A concentração ideal variou de acordo com o produto, sendo recomendado 1,0 mL L-1; 1,5 mL L-1; 0,0060 g L-1 para Phos-Chek WD881®, Hold Fire® e Nutrigel®, respectivamente.

Abstract The chemical firebreaks consist of bands with applications of fire retardants and are used in the indirect combat of forest fires. Despite its efficiency, the lack of practical use recommendations restricts the application and effectiveness of the products. This paper evaluated the efficiency of fire retardants in controlled burning in area of 6.0 years old of the Eucalyptus urograndis (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla) (clone H13) by applying different concentrations of product and volumes of the syrup, after 1.0h of retardants application. Two commercially fire retardants (Phos-Chek WD881® and Hold Fire®) and an alternative (hydro retainer polymer - Nutrigel®) were tested with five concentrations each and volumes of the syrup of 0.5; 1.0 and 2.0 L m-2 (only water and without application syrup were the references). The fire behavior was evaluated through fire propagation speed, flame length (and their respective reduction rates) and the fuel material remaining and consumed. For all the retardants, the increase of volumes of the syrup promoted reduction of fire behavior variables, being recommended an application of syrup equivalent to 2.0 L m-2. The efficiencies of the Phos-Chek WD881® and of Hold Fire® presented increasing linear models with increased concentration improved retarder efficacy, however, the Nutrigel® presented efficiency with quadratic response to increased concentrations. The ideal concentration varied according to the product, recommended 1.0 mL L-1; 1.5 mL L-1; 0.0060 g L-1 for Phos-Chek®, Hold Fire® and Nutrigel®, respectively.

RESUMO O emprego de retardantes do fogo aumenta a eficiência no combate de incêndios florestais, todavia, ainda apresenta incertezas quanto a contaminações ambientais, recomendações de preparação e ausência de regulamentação no Brasil. Neste cenário, produtos alternativos como polímeros hidroretentores, que diminuem evaporação rápida da água, também podem apresentar efeitos positivos quanto a redução do comportamento do fogo. Foram avaliadas a eficiência e as formas de uso do polímero hidroretentor como retardante de fogo de curta duração (combate indireto) em queimas controladas em plantios de eucalipto. Foram avaliadas cinco concentrações (diluição em água), três volumes de calda de aplicação e dois tempos pós-aplicação sobre o material combustível disponível na área. As queimas controladas foram conduzidas a favor do vento, entre as 10 e 14 horas, na estação seca da região, com avaliações micrometeorológicas e do comportamento do fogo (velocidade de propagação do fogo e comprimento das chamas). O aumento do volume de calda e das concentrações do polímero hidroretentor propiciaram reduções na propagação do fogo. Em material combustível de eucalipto, o polímero hidroretentor pode ser usado como retardante de fogo de curta duração (efeitos até duas horas após a aplicação), considerando a calda de 2,0 L m-2 e concentração de 0,0060% (diluído em água).

ABSTRACT The use of fire retardants increases efficiency in fighting forest fires, however, it still presents uncertainties regarding environmental contamination, recommendations for preparation, and it lack of regulation in Brazil. In this scenario, alternative products such as water-retaining polymers, that can reduce the rapid evaporation of water, can also have positive effects in terms of reducing fire behavior. Efficiency and ways of using the water-retaining polymer as a short-duration fire retardant (indirect combat) in controlled burns in eucalyptus plantations were evaluated. Five concentrations (dilution in water), three volumes of spray solution, and two post-application times on the combustible material available in the area were evaluated. Controlled burns were conducted downwind, between 10 am and 2 pm, during dry season in the region, with micrometeorological and fire behavior assessments (fire propagation speed and length of flames). Increased spray volume and concentration of water-retaining polymer led to reductions in the spread of fire. In eucalyptus combustible material, the water-retaining polymer can be used as a fire retardant of short duration (effective up to two hours after application), considering a spray volume of 2.0 L m-2 and concentration of 0.0060% (diluted in water).
